Ceramic paper discs were made by employing a dual papermaking technique and by partially substituting cellulosic fibres by SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 ceramic ones. Ulexite (NaCaB 5 O 6 (OH) 6 ·5(H 2 O)), extracted from the natural mineral, was added as a binder to give ceramic paper the necessary strength for its manipulation and catalytic use. Either La,Co or Ba,Co was incorporated in order to give ceramic paper the capability of trapping NOx and oxidizing soot particles. Structured catalysts were characterised by SEM, FTIR and XRD, and the mechanical properties were also determined. Lanthanum was deposited on ceramic fibres as La 2 O 2 CO 3 aggregates and barium as BaCO 3 filaments, being cobalt deposited as Co 3 O 4 flakes. Mechanical properties indicated that the ceramic paper obtained from natural ulexite proved to be stronger, though less flexible than those prepared using colloidal suspensions as a binder. Diesel soot oxidation activity was determined by TPO either adding or not 0.1% NO into the feeding stream. The thus prepared systems resulted in being active towards soot oxidation, being the value of maximum combustion rate 420 °C, which is within the temperature range of diesel exhaust gases. The paper presents an analysis of the experimental results of direct hydrogen injection in a dual-fuel diesel engine. The test object is a four-cylinder, four-stroke ADCR engine. The parameters like: indicated mean effective pressure, peak pressure, angle of maximum pressure and released heat were analyzed. Statistical analysis of the obtained results was carried out for each cylinder separately for four different hydrogen doses. Both early and late direct hydrogen injection were analyzed. The significance of the differences for each of the analyzed parameters and type of injection was determined. Diesel engine combustion is dependent mainly on the fuel injection characteristics, particularly the injection pressure and rate, which directly affect the engine efficiency and emissions. Herein, an electrically controlled supercharger is added to a traditional high-pressure common rail system to form an ultrahigh-pressure common rail system. Then, the variations in the spray, combustion, and emission characteristics of a diesel engine with a variable fuel injection rate are analyzed. Moreover, a simulation model for a diesel engine combustion chamber is built and verified by experimental results for numerical analysis. The results reveal that the injection rate can be flexibly adjusted via regulation when the solenoid valves are opened on the electrically controlled supercharger. Specifically, (1) the boot-shaped injection rate has greater potential than the traditional rectangular injection rate in terms of combustion and emission; (2) the main injection advance angle at the boot-shaped injection rate can be properly increased to improve combustion; and (3) the pilot injection quantity and advance angle are strongly coupled with the boot-shaped injection rate, potentially enhancing the mixing efficiency of fuel and air in the cylinder to achieve favorable emission results. A method using thermal desorption sampling and analysis by PTR-MS to measure long chain alkanes (C12-C18) and other larger organics associated with diesel engine exhaust emissions is described. Long chain alkanes undergo dissociative proton transfer reactions forming a series of fragment ions with formula CnH2n+1. The PTR-MS is insensitive to n-alkanes less than C8 but displays an increasing sensitivity for larger alkanes. Fragment ion distribution and sensitivity is a function of drift conditions. At 80 Td the most abundant ion fragments from C10 to C16 n-alkanes were m/z 57, 71 and 85. The mass spectrum of gasoline and diesel fuel at 80 Td displayed ion group patterns that can be related to known fuel constituents, such as alkanes, alkylbenzenes and cycloalkanes, and other compound groups that are inferred from molecular weight distributions such as dihydronapthalenes and naphthenic monoaromatics. It is shown that thermal desorption sampling of gasoline and diesel engine exhausts at 80 Td allows for discrimination against light alkanes and alkenes which are a major constituent of both exhausts, allowing for quantification of higher molecular weight alkanes from the abundance of CnH2n+1 fragment ions. Using this approach, the molar abundance of C12-C18 alkanes in diesel engine exhaust was found to be 75% that of the total C1- C4 alkylbenzene abundance. While the PTR-MS mass spectra of gasoline and diesel exhaust looked similar, the abundance of higher molecular weight compounds relative to that of C4-alkylbenzenes was much greater in diesel engine exhaust. The abundance patterns of compounds determined by thermal desorption sampling may allow for emission profiles to be developed to better quantify the relative contributions of diesel and gasoline exhaust emissions of larger organic compounds to urban air concentrations. The normal operation of the marine diesel engine is of great significance to ensure the normal navigation of the ship. Predicting its operation state and judging whether the diesel engine is in the abnormal state in advance can guarantee the safe navigation of the vessel. In this paper, combining the feature extraction ability of the convolutional neural network (CNN) and the time series data prediction ability of the bidirectional gated recurrent unit (BiGRU), a marine diesel engine exhaust temperature prediction model is constructed. The results show that the mean square error (MSE) of the prediction model is 0.1156, the average absolute error (MAE) is 0.2501, and the average absolute percentage error (MAPE) is 0.0005336. Then, according to the residual distribution between the predicted value and the actual value of the model output and the standard deviation of the residual calculated by using the sliding window, we set the alarm threshold, where the upper limit of residual error is 1 and the lower limit is 1. The upper limit of the standard deviation is 0.604. Finally, we used the data set under abnormal conditions for experimental verification. The results show that the method can accurately determine the fault early warning of the marine diesel engine and provides a new reference for the health management of intelligent marine equipment. In this paper, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was established and verified on the basis of experimental results, and then the effect of hydrogenation addition on combustion and emission characteristics of a diesel–hydrogen dual-fuel engine fueled with hydrogenation addition (0%, 5%, and 10%) under different hydrogenation energy shares (HESs) and compression ratios (CRs) were investigated using CONVERGE3.0 software. And, this work assumed that the hydrogen and air were premixed uniformly. The correctness of the simulation model was verified by experimental data. The values of HES are in the range of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%. And, the values of CR are in the range of 14, 16, 18, and 20. The results of this study showed that the addition of hydrogen to diesel fuel has a significant effect on the combustion characteristics and the emission characteristics of diesel engines. When the HES was 15%, the in-cylinder pressure increased by 10.54%. The in-cylinder temperature increased by 15.11%. When the CR was 20, the in-cylinder pressure and the in-cylinder temperature increased by 66.10% and 13.09%, respectively. In all cases, HC, CO, CO2, and soot emissions decreased as the HES increased. But, NOx emission increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study which explores the sensitivity of the single particle soot photometer (SP2) to black carbon (BC) in an effort to determine the error in the calibration of BC. The study investigates the SP2 sensitivity from thermodenuded diesel exhaust, wood burning exhaust among other factors. It also suggests that the ideal calibration material for SP2 is thermodenuded diesel exhaust.

Diesel engines play a very significant role in the automotive industry, but the total emissions of diesel engines are more than 1.8 times that of petrol engines. It is therefore important for diesel engines to control emissions. Theoretically, the Miller cycle can be used to achieve NOx reductions by changing the effective compression ratio, while it has become increasingly popular in recent years with the increasing maturity of current turbocharging technology. Based on Ricardo WAVE software, this paper analyses the NOx emissions and engine performance of diesel engines by modelling and simulating their operation under different loads with two types of Miller cycles (EIVC and LIVC) at different degrees. Simulation of engines operating under different loads allows a more comprehensive study of the effects of the Miller cycle on the engine, and a specific analysis in the context of the actual engine operating environment. The result is that both versions of the Miller cycle are most effective in reducing NOx emissions at 10% load, showing a maximum reduction of 21% for EIVC and 37% for LIVC. However, as the Miller cycle decreases engine power, the paper further investigates the application of turbocharger systems in the EIVC Miller cycle, with results showing a 32% increase in brake power at 10% load and −25% EIVC Miller cycle degree. Both ethanol-fueled diesel-cycle and Miller cycle engines were also analyzed, and a reduction in NOx emissions was observed, as well as hydrogen engine performance and NOx emissions. NOx is one of the main sources of pollutants for motor vehicles. Nowadays, many diesel vehicle manufacturers may use emission-cheating equipment to make the vehicles meet compliance standards during emission tests, but the emissions will exceed the standards during actual driving. In order to strengthen the supervision of diesel vehicles for emission monitoring, this article intends to establish a model that can predict the transient emission characteristics of heavy-duty diesel vehicles and provide a solution for remote online monitoring of diesel vehicles. This paper refers to the heavy-duty vehicle National VI emission regulations and uses vehicle-mounted portable emission testing equipment (PEMS) to conduct actual road emission tests on a certain country's VI heavy-duty diesel vehicles. Then, it proposes a new feature engineering processing method that uses gray correlation analysis and principal component analysis to eliminate invalid data and reduce the dimensionality of the aligned data, which facilitates the rapid convergence of the model during the training process. Then, a double-hidden-layer BP (Back propagation) neural network was established, and the improved gray wolf algorithm was used to optimize the threshold and weight of the neural network, and a heavy-duty diesel vehicle NOx emission prediction model was obtained. Through the training of the network, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the improved model on the test set between the predicted value and the true value is 1.9144 (mg/s), and the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0.87024. Compared with single-hidden-layer network and double-hidden-layer BP neural network models, the accuracy of the model has been improved. In order to meet the increasing pollutants discharge standard, the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) module in the diesel engine after-treatment system is an important means to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. SCR systems are prone to urea crystallization at lower temperatures, especially during the cold-start conditions of diesel engines. In this study, we use the diesel engine after-treatment system test bench to obtain the boundary parameter of the simulation modules, and the urea crystallization risk assessment model of the diesel SCR system is established. Comparing the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results with the test bench results, it is shown that the predicted urea film distribution of the assessment model is in good agreement with the experimental results. In order to clarify the various factors that affect the urea crystallization risk, this paper conducts a simulation analysis on a nozzle and mixer structure and operating parameters. The CFD results indicate that the increase in urea spray time will increase the maximum urea film thickness on the SCR system mixer surface. Exhaust temperature is the most important influencing factor. When the diesel engine exhaust temperature increases from 190 °C to 300 °C, the maximum urea film thickness decreases by 32 and the urea film mass accumulation decreases by 5%. Exhaust flow has a small impact on urea crystallization risk. When the exhaust flow increases from 300 kg/h to 600 kg/h, the maximum urea film thickness decreases by 39% and the urea film mass accumulation decreases by about 1%. As one of the most ideal alternative fuels for internal combustion engines, methanol can achieve near-zero carbon emissions. The main problem of methanol application in compression combustion engines is the phase lag caused by its poor combustion characteristics, but under low load conditions, the fuel activity can be improved by adding the cetane number improver EHN (Isooctyl nitrate), and the dependence on intake heating can be reduced to a certain extent. Based on a three-dimensional CFD simulation, the effects of methanol injection parameters and the addition of EHN on the combustion characteristics of a four-stroke exhaust turbocharged diesel engine were studied in this paper. With or without EHN, the increase in injection pressure and the advance in injection timing lead to an increase in the peak temperature, pressure, and heat release rate, as well as a shortening of the combustion duration. Adding EHN witnesses reduced requirements for methanol ignition, including a decreased peak temperature, pressure, and heat release rate, a significantly shortened ignition delay period, and an extended combustion duration, which thus results in a reduced indicated thermal efficiency. This study innovatively develops a 3D model of a compression combustion engine applicable to in-cylinder direct injection pure methanol fuel and EHN under small load conditions, which provides a reference for future research and development of small-load pure methanol compression combustion engines and has certain guiding significance. The present paper investigates two different strategies for model-based calibration and control of tailpipe nitrogen oxide emissions in a light-duty 3.0 L diesel engine equipped with an aftertreatment system (ATS). The latter includes a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and an underfloor selective catalytic reduction (SCR) device, in which the injection of diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), marketed as 'AdBlue', is also taken into account. The engine was modeled in the GT-SUITE environment, and a previously developed model-based combustion controller was integrated in the model, which is capable of adjusting the start of injection of the main pulse and the total injected fuel mass, in order to achieve desired targets of engine-out nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx) and brake mean effective pressure (BMEP). First, a model-based calibration strategy consisting of the minimization of an objective function that takes into account fuel consumption and AdBlue injection was developed and assessed by exploring different weight factors. Then, a direct model-based controller of tailpipe nitrogen oxide emissions was designed, which exploits the real-time value of the SCR efficiency to define engine-out NOx emission targets for the combustion controller. Both strategies exploit the model-based combustion controller and were tested through a Model-in-the-Loop (MiL) under steady-state and transient conditions. Electric drones as an autonomous mode of transport are scaling up to transform last-mile goods delivery, raising an urgent need for assessing impacts of drone transport from a systems perspective. In this paper, we conduct systems analyses to assess the environmental, economic, and delivery time impact of large drones for delivery scenarios to pick-up centers between mid-size cities predominantly in rural areas, and deliveries within city limits compared with electric and diesel trucks. Results show that large drones have lower emissions than diesel trucks for deliveries in rural areas and that drones don't compete with electric trucks, mainly due to the high energy demand required for take-off and landing for each delivery. Furthermore, we show that electric drones are an economically more cost-effective option than road-bound transport modes such as diesel and electric trucks due to the high degree of automation, and also provide the fastest delivery times. Our analysis provides unique insights that drones can address rapid electrification and emergency applications due to low costs, high flexibility, and fast operations. However, for regulators and practitioners to realize it as an emission-friendly option it is necessary to determine the optimal size of drones, particularly for use cases in urban areas, avoid very low landings for deliveries, and have home deliveries instead of pick-up points. Pure electric public transport management optimization can promote the electrification evolution from conventional diesel emission to low/zero carbon transport revolution. However, emerging electric vehicle scheduling (EVS) takes into account battery capacity, battery-allowed mileage, and charging duration, which are a few concerns present at the conventional motor bus planning level. Concentrating on this new challenge, this paper builds a multi-type electric vehicle scheduling model, featuring rigorous load capacity, battery-allowed mileage, and recharging duration constraints. The binary decision variables involving the connection between departure and arrival times, as well as the recharging necessity, are judged simultaneously. The objective is to minimize the fleet size, idle mileage, and charging cost. A preprocessing-based genetic algorithm is used to handle this mixed-integer nonlinear programing model. Numerical examples are tested to validate the effectiveness of the proposed models and the solution algorithm. Compared with a single large-type vehicle scheme, the total cost of multi-type vehicle scheduling in one-trip, two-trip, and three-trip frequency scenarios are reduced by 20.8%, 6.3%, and 9.1%, respectively. Application of the nonthermal plasma (NTP) technology for NOX removal from diesel engine exhaust has already been experimentally proved to be an efficient method at laboratory level. The NOX removal efficiency depends on various electrical and physical parameters, and very few studies have been carried out to predict it with the variation in those parameters. In this paper, an approach has been made using dimensional analysis to predict the NOX concentration with the NTP treatment, based on its dependence on various operating parameters. A relation has been obtained between NOX concentration and 11 numbers of parameters affecting NOX removal so as to form dimensionless groups. A mathematical model has been established using the experimental data and nonlinear regression technique. Experiments are conducted to validate this model with variations in the parameters voltage, flow rate, temperature, discharge gap width, and initial NOX concentration. The predicted NOX concentration values have been found to be well matched with the experimental results. The rms errors for the test data are found to be 4.64%, and in ppm, it is 9.58. The advancement of modern injection systems of diesel engines is related to a constant increase in the injection pressures generated by injection pumps. This translates into an improvement of the engine operation indexes, including the emission-related ones. Such an approach brings a series of problems related to the design, construction and durability of the injection system. Therefore, the authors asked whether the current market trend in injection systems is the only appropriate path to be taken. When searching for the answer, the authors decided to propose an innovative concept consisting of dissolving exhaust gas in diesel fuel with the use of an injection pump. Such a saturated solution, when flowing out of the injection nozzle, begins the process of releasing the gas dissolved in the fuel. This has a positive impact on the atomization process, hence the process of combustion. The aim of this paper stems from the previously performed research. Due to the nature of the phenomenon, it was necessary to propose a new design for the injection pump. For correct selection of the dimensions of the pumping section, it was of key importance to determine the coefficient of solubility and the bulk modulus of the solution of diesel fuel and exhaust gas. Aside from the description of the applied method and the results of the direct measurements, this paper presents the yet undescribed results of the measurements of the coefficient of solubility of different concentrations of exhaust gas in diesel fuel. The authors also investigated the influence of the amount of exhaust gas dissolved in the fuel on the bulk modulus of the solution. The final part of the paper is a description of a proprietary design of a hypocycloidal injection pump. Exhaust emissions testing of vehicles under real driving conditions (real driving emissions, RDE) using portable exhaust emissions measurement systems (PEMS) was introduced a few years ago by the European Commission as a mandatory test during type approval and later also for in-service conformity. This paper compares results from mobile systems for measuring exhaust gas emissions (PEMS) with a stationary laboratory (BOSMAL's Exhaust Emissions Testing Laboratory). The tests were carried out using a passenger car equipped with a spark ignition engine, which was tested on a chassis dynamometer over the WLTC cycle. The results showed that the differences between PEMS analysers and stationary analysers range from a few percent to a dozen or so percent, depending on the component and the measurement method. The majority of rail vehicles worldwide use diesel as a primary fuel source. Diesel engine carbon emissions harm the environment and human health. Although railway electrification can reduce emissions, it is not always the most economical option, especially on routes with low vehicle demand. As a result, interest in hydrogen-powered trains as a way to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has steadily grown in recent years. In this paper, we discuss advancements made in hydrogen-powered freight and commuter trains, as well as the technology used in some aspects of hydrogen-powered vehicles. It was observed that hydrogen-powered trains are already in use in Europe and Asia, unlike most developing countries in Africa. Commuter trains have received most of the research and development (R&D) attention, but interest in hydrogen-powered freight trains has recently picked up momentum. Considering the concerns for emissions reduction in the maritime sector, the present paper evaluates, through modeling and simulation, oxy-fuel combustion in a two-stroke ship engine (2SE) and the best production system configuration to obtain the required oxygen (O2). An initial model of a ship engine is calibrated with the engine manufacturer's data and then adapted to work with O2 as the oxidant to eliminate nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions and with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to control the in-cylinder combustion temperature. Mixed Ionic–Electronic Conducting (MIEC) membranes produce the necessary O2 from the ambient air, which is heated up and pressurized by a heat exchanger and turbocharging coupled system to provide the air conditions required for the proper operation of the MIEC. Several layouts of this system are evaluated for the full load engine operating point to find the optimum O2 production system configuration. Results reveal that the engine operating under oxy-fuel combustion conditions avoids NOx emissions at the expense of higher brake-specific fuel consumption (BSFC) to obtain the original brake torque, and also expels a stream composed exclusively of CO2 and H2O, which facilitates the separation of CO2 from exhaust gases. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the composition of exhaust gases and the operating parameters of a modern internal combustion Diesel engine. A literature analysis of the methods of reducing the emission of toxic components of exhaust gases from SI engines was conducted. It has been shown that the air filter pressure drop, increasing during the engine operation, causes a significant decrease in power output and an increase in fuel consumption, as well as smoke emission of Diesel engines with the classical injection system with a piston (sectional) in-line injection pump. It has also been shown, on the basis of a few literature studies, that the increase in the resistance of air filter flow causes a change in the composition of car combustion engines, with the effect of the air filter pressure drop on turbocharged engines being insignificant. A programme, and conditions of tests, on a dynamometer of a modern six-cylinder engine with displacement Vss = 15.8 dm3 and power rating 226 kW were prepared, regarding the influence of air filter pressure drop on the composition of exhaust gases and the parameters of its operation. For each technical state of the air filter, in the range of rotational speed n = 1000–2100 rpm, measurements of exhaust gas composition and emission were carried out, as well as measurements and calculations of engine-operating parameters, namely that of effective power. An increase in the pressure drop in the inlet system of a modern Diesel truck engine has no significant effect on the emissions of CO, CO2, HC and NOx to the atmosphere, nor does it cause significant changes in the degree of smoke opacity of exhaust gases in relation to its permissible value. An increase in air filter pressure drop from value Δpf = 0.580 kPa to Δpf = 2.024 kPa (by 1.66 kPa) causes a decrease in the maximum filling factor value from ηυ = 2.5 to ηυ = 2.39, that is by 4.5%, and a decrease in maximum power by 8.8%. This paper is a study of the coating technique of AgCl/Al2O3 catalyst on metal-based surfaces. In order to remove nitrogen oxides from the exhaust of marine diesel engines, this paper proposes a method of electrophoretic deposition and designs an electrophoretic deposition apparatus according to the coating conditions. An in-house developed catalyst was coated on a specific stainless-steel workpiece by the electrophoretic deposition method under the conditions of appropriate voltage and catalyst solution concentration. The surface and cross section of AgCl/Al2O3 coating on stainless steel were observed by scanning electron microscope, and the thickness of catalyst coating after coating was determined. In this study, an exhaust gas evaluation system was built, and a removal test of nitrogen oxides from diesel exhaust gas was conducted under the environment of temperature cyclic change, and repeated experiments proved that the coated workpiece could still effectively remove harmful nitrogen oxides from the exhaust gas. In modern compression ignited engines, one of the key innovative directions is optimization of the burn process especially to reduce emissions. This optimization can be done by ensuring a better air-fuel mixture. To answer this problem, in the current paper, the authors analysed the vertices formation and velocity inside the combustion chamber in thirteen cases, by using numerical analysis (AVL FIRE Software), to generate pure tumble motion, pure swirl motion, no in-cylinder motion of the air, and other combinations on tumble and swirl motion. The cases that were chosen combine 0%, 50%, 70% and 100% tumble and swirl motion. The greatest velocity of the in-cylinder air motion was noted when a 100%tumble and 50% swirl motion was induced (77.2 m/s at 736 degrees CA), while the smallest velocity was noted at 100% swirl and 0% tumble (71.07 m/s at 736 degrees CA). Because of the different induced motions, the vertices that form inside the combustion chamber have a great influence on air-fuel mixture and implicitly on emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the performance and emission characteristics of a diesel engine were investigated with varying ratios of tung oil-based biodiesel blends (B10, B20, and B50) and neat diesel under different operating conditions. The experimental results showed that the addition of biodiesel blends had different effects on engine power and torque depending on the blend ratio. B10 displayed a slight increase in power and torque, which increased by 1.9% and 6.6%. At the same time, B20 and B50 showed declines slightly. The fuel consumption rate increased slightly with an increasing percentage of biodiesel added. In general, all the blends exhibited significantly lower emissions of CO, NOX, HC, and smoke compared to neat diesel. B10 displayed the most notable reduction of CO emissions, with a 42.86% decrease at medium to high loads. NOX emissions of tung oil-based biodiesel blends were reduced at all load conditions except for B50. In addition, HC emissions were all reduced, especially for B20, which led to a 27.54% reduction at 50% load. Among all the tested blends, B50 showed the greatest decrease in smoke emissions of 38.05% compared to neat diesel at 2000 rpm. Hydrogen is a clean and renewable alternative fuel. In this paper, the combustion mechanism of diesel/hydrogen dual fuel is constructed and verified. The mechanism is combined with three-dimensional numerical simulation to study the effects of pilot injection and main injection on the combustion and emissions of a diesel/hydrogen dual fuel engine. The mechanism uses a 70% mole fraction of n-decane and 30% mole fraction of α-methylnaphthalene as diesel substitutes, and it combines n-decane, α-methylnaphthalene, NOX, PAH, soot and H2/C1-C3 sub-mechanisms to form a diesel/hydrogen dual fuel combustion mechanism. The mechanism was verified by chemical kinetics, including the ignition delay time, JSR (Jet Stirred Reactor) oxidation and laminar flame speed, and then, it was verified by computational fluid dynamics. The results show that the simulated values are in good agreement with the experimental values of cylinder pressure, heat release rate and emissions data. The mechanism can well predict the combustion and emissions of a diesel/hydrogen dual fuel engine. Compared with single injection, the peak heat release rate, peak cylinder pressure and MPIR (Maximum Pressure Rise Rate) increase with the increase in pilot mass percent from 5% to 20%, which makes the phase of CA10 and CA50 advance and reduces CO emissions, but NOX emissions increase. With the advance of pilot injection timing from 10° CA BTDC to 30° CA BTDC, the peak cylinder pressure increases, the peak heat release rate decreases, CA10 and CA50 advance, CO emissions decrease, NOX emissions increase and NOX emissions peak at 30° CA BTDC. When the pilot injection timing is further advanced from 30° CA BTDC to 50° CA BTDC, the peak cylinder pressure decreases, the peak heat release rate increases, CA10 and CA50 are delayed, CO and NOX emissions are reduced, and NOX emissions at 50° CA BTDC are lower than those at 10° CA BTDC. With the advance of main injection timing from 0° CA BTDC to 8° CA BTDC, CO emissions decrease, NOX emissions increase, the peak cylinder pressure increases, the peak heat release rate decreases slightly first and then increases, and the peak cylinder pressure and peak heat release rate corresponding to the overall phase shift forward. When the main injection timing is advanced to 6° CA BTDC, MPIR is 1.3 MPa/° CA, exceeding the MPIR limit of diesel engine 1.2 MPa/° CA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to limited stock of levels of fossil fuel resources and ecological issues, biodiesel is becoming an attractive alternative choice for replacing conventional fuels. Biodiesel can be used by mixing with different fuels like citrullus lanatus seeds, camphor, cleaner fuel injector, sunflower, safflower, soybean, cottonseed, rapeseed, palm, Jatropha, and Moringa oil seeds. This paper reviews use of biofuels blended with citrullus lanatus seeds. The citrullus lanatus biodiesel was mixed with diesel in different percentages by volume. Some physico‐chemical characteristics of blends and pure diesel were investigated and it was established that it conforms to the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM) standards. The exceptions were the viscosity and specific gravity of the pure biodiesel B100 which were 0.09 and 0.018 mm2/s above the ASTM standard, respectively. All blends were run on a stationary 4‐cylinder diesel engine at 70% loading and speeds of 1500, 2000, and 2500 rpm. It was deduced that B10 gave the best brake power, thermal efficiency, and optimum specific fuel consumption at a speed of 2500 rpm. B15 gave the highest brake mean effective pressure. B25 and B100 gave the least values of brake power and brake thermal efficiency across the speeds. B100 gave the highest brake specific fuel consumption. Furthermore, the exhaust emission gases such as CO2, CO, NOx, and HC in different engine conditions stated above were recorded and analyzed. It was found that B25 emitted about 53% lesser CO2 and 37% lesser CO as compared to pure diesel with zero HC at 2500 rpm. The blends were better in terms of engine performance and also in reduction of emissions in most cases, than pure diesel fuel. Problem statement: Various emissions from engines like unburnt hydro carbons, particulate emissions, NOx, and CO have bad effects on ecology. This work presents an overview on use of novel hybrid fuels in compression ignition engines with an aim of mitigating effects of emissions on environment. Biodiesel was blended with Citrullus lanatus oil and pure diesel in different proportions to see effects on performance of diesel engines. The application of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) as an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines has been gaining popularity. However, it has rarely been studied in previous research on the chemical kinetics of DMF for engine combustion simulations. In the present study, a reduced n-heptane/toluene/DMF-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) reaction mechanism containing only 78 species amongst 190 reactions was proposed and applied to predict the combustion and emissions of a diesel engine using diesel/DMF blend fuel. First, a detailed reaction mechanism for DMF from the literature was chosen and reduced using combined mechanism reduction methods under engine-relevant conditions. Second, the reduced mechanism of DMF was incorporated into an existing reduced n-heptane/toluene-PAH mechanism to establish a three-component chemistry mechanism. Third, the predictive capability of the combined mechanism was improved by adjusting the rate constants of selected gas-phase reactions. Subsequently, the proposed three-component mechanism was compared and validated with experimental measurements of shock tube ignition delay times and premixed flame species profiles acquired from published papers. Moreover, new experimental data from a conventional diesel engine were used to evaluate the developed mechanism. Overall, the predicted results obtained by this proposed reduced n-heptane/toluene/DMF-PAH mechanism are in reasonable agreement with the available experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim of paper is to determine the impact of the mixing of crude soybean oil in mineral diesel fuel on the performance of an internal combustion diesel engine in a tractor. Laboratory testing has determined the impact of the use of such a fuel mixture on the rated engine power and exhaust emissions (CO, CO2, HC and NOx). For the purposes of the test, four types of fuel were used, diesel fuel, and mixtures of diesel fuel and soybean degummed oil in concentrations of 5% (S5), 10% (S10) and 20% (S20). Power measurement revealed an increase in average engine power and torque. Hourly fuel consumption was almost the same for all types of fuel. Measurement of exhaust emissions showed an increase in CO, HC and NOx emissions with the addition of soybean oil to diesel fuel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims at investigating powertrain behaviour, especially in transient dynamic responses, using a nonlinear truck vehicle dynamic model with a parallel hybrid configuration. A power split control was designed to achieve the desired drivability performance, with a focus on NOx emissions. The controller was characterized by high-level model-based logic used to elaborate the total powertrain torque required, and a low-level allocation strategy for splitting power between the engine and the electric motor. The final task was to enhance vehicle drivability based on driver requests, with the goal of reducing—in a hybrid configuration—transient diesel engine emissions when compared to a conventional pure thermal engine powertrain. Different parameters were investigated for the assessment of powertrain performance, in terms of external input disturbance rejection and NOx emissions reduction. The investigation of torque allocation performance was limited to the simulation of a Tip-in manoeuvre, which showed a satisfying trade-off between vehicle drivability and transient emissions. In recent years, the interest in renewable fuels has increased mainly due to regulations regulating the permissible limits of toxic components of exhaust gases emitted by reciprocating engines. This paper presents the results of a comparison of the effects of fueling a compression-ignition piston engine with a mixture of diesel fuel and n-butanol, as well as RME (Rapeseed Oil Methyl Esters) biodiesel and n-butanol. The tests were carried out for a constant load and a wide energetic share of fuels in the mixture. The main focus was on the assessment of combustion stability, the uniqueness of the combustion stages, and the assessment of the fuel type influence on the CA50 angle. The tests show that RME offers the possibility of efficient combustion with n-butanol with up to 80% energy share. The share of n-butanol has a positive effect on the engine's efficiency and very effectively reduces soot emissions. Without the influence on COVIMEP, the share of n-butanol up to 40% in the mixture with diesel fuel and up to 80% in the mixture with RME was recorded. Combustion of RME with n-butanol was more stable. The share of n-butanol in the mixture with diesel fuel caused an increase in NOx emissions, and co-combustion with RME caused a decrease in emissions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The overwhelming parts of the modern Diesel engines for vehicles are supercharged. However, the supercharging process lead to generating a significant amount of NOx emissions. Therefore, the supercharging intensity may be intentionally limited in order to avoid increasing NOx emissions excessively, as these emissions are drastically limited by the Euro 6 pollution standard. By moving from Euro 5 to Euro 6, the NOx emission's permissible limits have been reduced by up to 80%. These reductions of NOx emissions were made possible mainly due to the utilization of the some conventional equipment and procedures presented in the paper. Diesel engine's supercharging could be realized efficiently also with pressure wave compressor (PWC). The paper highlights the possibility of realizing the EGR process directly through the PWC. The experimental research is developed to validate or to dismiss theoretical suppositions considering the efficiency of particulate matter filters for internal combustion engines. This paper is pointing out the ideas of a practical test regarding soot impact upon the diesel particle filter from after treatment system, supplied with different fuels in operation mode. Measurements are recorded with after treatment system scanner and subsequently the experimental data are processed and graphically presented using digital module. Experience and know-how concerning the after-treatment system applied to the exhaust pipe of a Diesel engine is extremely useful in modelling the protocol for sustainable technical design of the automotive powertrains. The present paper outlines an applied process of controlling and analysing at least four parameters defining the clogging level of an actual diesel particle filter in K9K792 euro 5 internal combustion engine in relation to the fuel type. Engine supplied with Diesel standard has a wide range of clogging, but when changing to more blended fuels containing biodiesel from soy methyl ester and ethanol, the after treatment process is influenced significantly. The experimental testing is designed to reiterate for each fuel type in real time and after a distance of one thousand kilometres - in engine speed regime of two thousand revolutions per minute. As the main engineering power plant, diesel engines are irreplaceable in the future. However, the stringent emission regulations impose many tough requirements to their developments. Recently, flexible fuel injection strategy has been recognized as an effective technology in creating an advanced spray and mixture formation and improving combustion efficiency indirectly. However, the detailed combustion and emission behaviors under flexible fuel injection are still unknown. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics under flexible fuel injection and explore an optimal injection strategy for high-efficiency combustion. A numerical simulation method is conducted by coupling the large-eddy simulation (LES) model and the SAGE combustion model. Then, the spray mixing, combustion flame propagation and emissions formation under various multiple-injection strategies are investigated. Results reveal that initial an ultrahigh injection pressure has a significant influence on the spray's axial penetration while dwell time mainly affects the spray's radial expansion. Under an initial ultrahigh injection pressure, the turbulence kinetic energy (TKE) becomes larger, and the vortex motions are stronger, contributing to a better spray turbulent mixing. Meanwhile, a snatchier flame structure with a favorable level of equivalence ratio and a homogeneous temperature distribution is obtained. In this way, the peak heat release rate (HRR) could increase by 46.7% with a 16.7% reduction in soot formation and a 31.4% reduction in NOx formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a deep neural network (DNN)-based nonlinear model predictive controller (NMPC) is demonstrated using real-time experimental implementation. First, the emissions and performance of a 4.5-liter 4-cylinder Cummins diesel engine are modeled using a DNN model with seven hidden layers and 24,148 learnable parameters created by stacking six Fully Connected layers with one long-short term memory (LSTM) layer. This model is then implemented as the plant model in an NMPC. For real-time implementation of the LSTM-NMPC, an open-source package acados with the quadratic programming solver HPIPM (High-Performance Interior-Point Method) is employed. This helps LSTM-NMPC run in real time with an average turnaround time of 62.3 milliseconds. For real-time controller prototyping, a dSPACE MicroAutoBox II rapid prototyping system is used. A Field-Programmable Gate Array is employed to calculate the in-cylinder pressure-based combustion metrics online in real time. The developed controller was tested for both step and smooth load reference changes, which showed accurate tracking performance while enforcing all input and output constraints. To assess the robustness of the controller to data outside the training region, the engine speed is varied from 1200 rpm to 1800 rpm. The experimental results illustrate accurate tracking and disturbance rejection for the out-of-training data region. At 5 bar indicated mean effective pressure and a speed of 1200 rpm, the comparison between the Cummins production controller and the proposed LSTM-NMPC showed a 7.9% fuel consumption reduction, while also decreasing both nitrogen oxides ( NO x ) and Particle Matter (PM) by up to 18.9% and 40.8%. In recent decades, the environment has been seriously polluted by the hazardous exhaust components of diesel engines. The international community, which is dedicated to preserving the harmony between nature and humanity, has taken this seriously and imposed strict regulations on Diesel engine manufacturers regarding the quantity of exhaust components from Diesel engines that may apply to the standards of EURO-VI. The SCR technology attempted to reduce the problem somewhat, but the associated problems of solid particle formation on the pipe walls, ammonia slip, and incomplete NOx reduction led to the development of new technology - solid selective catalytic reduction. The use of solid ammonium salt for ammonia generation has shown better results in NOx reduction and reduction of solid particle formation compared to SCR. However, it was not possible to fully resolve the ammonia slip issue. A uniform flow rate of ammonia through the SCR catalyst can reduce NOx efficiently. In this paper, the role of mixer design in achieving a uniform flow rate of ammonia is investigated in detail. The results show that an optimized mixer design leads to efficient reduction of NOx and thus reduces ammonia slip to a great extent. The performance and emission of a small diesel engine fuelled by commercial diesel fuel in Indonesia are present in this paper. Various commercial diesel fuels in Indonesia are produced and marketed by Pertamina. As the largest oil company in Indonesia, Pertamina has developed various diesel fuels, namely Solar, Biosolar (B30), Dexlite, and Pertadex. This study explains in more detail the performance, fuel consumption, and emission produced by the four types of fuels, and they were investigated experimentally using a single-cylinder diesel engine at various engine speeds, from 1,000 rpm to 4,500 rpm. The result shows the engine fuelled by Pertadex generates the highest power and torque, while the lowest is generated by the Biosolar fuelled engine. The maximum torque and power generated by the Pertadex fuelled engine are about 25.5 Nm and 7200 W, respectively. The engine fuelled by Pertadex has the lowest brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) of 0.3037 kg·kW·h, compared to the engines fuelled by the Dexlite, Solar, and Biosolar fuels, with values around 0.3127, 0.3215, and 0.3338 kg·kW·h, respectively. Nitrogen oxides (NOx) gases, such as nitrous oxide (N2O), nitrogen oxide (NO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), are considered the most hazardous exhausts exhaled by industries and stationary and non-stationary application engines. Investigation of catalytic decomposition of NO has been carried out on copper ion exchanged with different bases, such as COK12, Nb2O5, Y-zeolite, and ZSM5. The catalytic decomposition of NO is widely accepted as an excellent method for the abatement of NO. However, the catalyst that achieves the highest reactivity in terms of NO decomposition is still a matter of research. The present paper aims to extend the research on the reactivity of non-noble metal-based catalysts using the direct decomposition method to remove NO from diesel engine exhaust. The reactivity of catalysts was observed in a quartz fixed bed reactor of 10 mm diameter placed in a furnace maintained at a temperature of 200 °C to 600 °C. The flow of NO was controlled by a mass flow controller, and the gas chromatography technique was used to observe the reactivity of the catalysts. Analysis showed that adding Cu to COK12, Nb2O5, Y-zeolite, and ZSM5 supports resulted in a rise in NO decomposition compared to stand-alone supports. Further experimental trials on the performance of Cu-ZSM5 at varying flow rates of NO showed that the NO decomposition activity of the catalyst was higher at lower flow rates of NO. Non-road sectors, such as agriculture and construction machinery, require high energy densities and flexibility in use, which is why diesel engines are mainly used. The use of climate-neutral fuels, produced from renewable energies, such as Oxymethylene Ether (OME) as a diesel substitute, can significantly reduce CO 2 and pollutant emissions in these sectors. In addition to CO 2 neutrality, OME also offers improved combustion characteristics compared to diesel fuel, eliminating the soot–NO x trade-off and thus enabling new opportunities in engine design and calibration. In this paper, the combustion of pure OME on a close-to-production, single-cylinder non-road diesel engine with a pump–line–nozzle injection system is analyzed. A variation of the center of combustion at constant power output was performed for diesel and OME at different operating points. Two injectors were investigated with OME. A study on ignition delay and a detailed thermodynamic analysis was carried out. In addition, the exhaust emissions CO, NO x , V O C , as well as particulate-matter, -number and -size distributions were measured. With OME, a significantly shorter ignition delay as well as a shortened combustion duration could be observed, despite a longer injection duration. In addition, the maximum injection pressure increases. V O C and CO emissions are reduced. Particulate matter was reduced by more than 99% and particle number (>10 nm) was reduced by multiple orders of magnitude. The median of the particle size distribution shifts from 60 to 85 nm (diesel) into a diameter range of sub 23 nm (OME). A significant reduction of NO x emissions with OME enables new degrees of freedom in engine calibration and an efficiency advantage without hardware adaption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diesel engines at high altitudes produce large amounts of soot due to low air densities. Understanding the ignition and combustion processes of diesel engines under high-altitude operating conditions is crucial for reducing soot emissions from diesel engines in plateau areas. This paper focuses on the effect of split injection mass and injection interval on diesel ignition and combustion characteristics at three altitudes (0 m, 3000 m, and 4500 m). The results show that no matter whether the first injection is small or large, and the injection interval is long or short, the liquid penetration is almost the same at high altitude. At an altitude of 4500 m, the liquid fuel impinges the wall to form a wet wall, producing a small amount of soot but many unburned hydrocarbon (UHC) emissions. The soot from the combustion of the first injection decreases with altitude. The maximum soot net oxidation rate after the last soot peak decreases with increasing altitude. The increase in altitude results in a smaller change in the rate of soot net oxidation. For the three split injection strategies, the proportion of high-concentration soot varies differently at different altitudes. This paper also discusses the change in soot mass and flame area at 0.2 ms after the end of injection (AEOI) to obtain the change in high concentration soot. • The split injection combustion processes of three altitudes were investigated. • The extended injection interval shortens the ignition delay at three altitudes. • The injection interval has little effect on the combustion duration at high altitude. • The soot formation of the first injection weakens as altitude increases. • The maximum soot net oxidation rate decreases as altitude increases. This paper addresses the optimal location and sizing of photovoltaic (PV) sources in isolated direct current (DC) electrical networks, considering time-varying load and renewable generation curves. The mathematical formulation of this problem corresponds to mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), which is reformulated via mixed-integer convex optimization: This ensures the global optimum solving the resulting optimization model via branch & bound and interior-point methods. The main idea of including PV sources in the DC grid is to minimize the daily energy losses and greenhouse emissions produced by diesel generators in isolated areas. The GAMS package is employed to solve the MINLP model, using mixed and integer variables; also, the CVX and MOSEK solvers are used to obtain solutions from the proposed mixed-integer convex model in the MATLAB. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is currently one of the most efficient denitration technologies to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of diesel engines. AdBlue (urea water solution, UWS) is the carrier of the reducing agent of SCR, and the spray process of UWS is one of the critical factors affecting denitration efficiency. In this paper, a non-air-assisted pressure-driven full process spray (NPFPS) model is proposed to illustrate the breakup mechanism and the spray distribution properties of UWS through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In the NPFPS model, the mechanism of the primary breakup is described by the volume of fluid (VOF) approach, which realizes the quantitative study of the critical parameters determining spray characteristics such as the breakup length, inclination angle, droplet size of the primary breakup, and primary velocity. The distribution of the spray after the primary breakup is depicted by the discrete phase model (DPM) coupled with the Taylor analogy breakup (TAB) model, through which the degree of secondary breakup can be obtained including quantitative studies of the droplet size distribution and velocity distribution in the different cross-sections. To verify the accuracy and feasibility of the NPFPS model, the experimental data are employed to compare with the simulation data. In this paper the effect of incremental rise of tyre pyrolysis oil in the blend is analyzed to explore the performance and emission parameters of a single cylinder VCR diesel engine. During experimentation proportion of TPO were 10, 25, 35, 50, 60, 75 and 90 % with diesel fuel. Tests were conducted using four different loading conditions. The experiments were performed using an analytical tool known as Design of Experiments on the basis of Response Surface Methodology. The conclusive models of the RSM prepared to predict the response criterion such as BSFC, BTE, CO, nitrogen oxides, smoke and Mechanical efficiency. The results depicted that with rise in the load, BSFC decrease while it increases with rise in TPO proportion and found lower at 50% TPO and increases again above 50% TPO. BTE increased with increase in the load and found to be highest at higher TPO. For all blends, an increase in Nitrogen oxides found with increase in load and TPO proportion. Parameter optimization executed using the desirability approach method of the RSM for improved conduct and reduced emissions. Highlights: Compared with discharge valve chamber volume, high-pressure tubing diameter shows more influence on injection mass and SMD. The opening pressure of needle valve is more sensitive to SMD. An overall simultaneous reduction of pollutant emissions was obtained, alleviating the trade-off relations between NO and soot emissions. Reasonable optimization of spray angle can improve power, economy and emission performance simultaneously. The emission requirements of diesel engines are becoming increasingly strict and reducing emissions has become the key technology. In view of this development trend, the influence law of fuel injection on emission is studied in this paper. Numerical studies were performed to analyze the structural parameters of fuel injection system on combustion and emission characteristics of marine diesel engines. The numerical modelling was validated based on single-cylinder diesel engine tests and fuel injection tests. After investigating the single structural parameters on the fuel injection characteristics, the orthogonal method was used to design the double-parameter structural optimization scheme of the fuel injection system. There are 22 optimized cases selected to further investigate using the CFD method by visualizing scalar distributions in cylinder, which was helpful to explain the reason of pollutant formation. Comprehensively comparing the performance of each fuel injection system's structural optimization scheme, moderate reduction of the discharge valve chamber volume and high-pressure tubing diameter would increase injection mass, along with faster injection rate and boosted injection pressure, leading to reduced Sauter mean diameter (SMD). Considering pollutant emission characteristics as well as economic and power concerns, case D6 with spray angle enlarging 5° showed best performance. Compared with the original condition, there was no NO deterioration and large reduction of soot emission by 65.4%, along with fuel consumption being lowered by 2.18% and more indicated power, by 2.21%. With ever more stringent \NOX emissions, it is necessary to examine removal of nitrogen oxide from diesel engine exhaust. This paper describes the study of \NOX reduction from 5.9-kW stationary diesel engine exhaust under nanosecond pulse energization. Two plasma reactors characterized by dielectric barrier discharge has been designed, built, and evaluated. One of the reactor designs include nine numbers of electrodes kept in parallel, and the exhaust was allowed to pass axially, whereas the second reactor consists of nine parallel electrodes and the exhaust was allowed to pass radially. The reactors were individually tested for the treatment of nitrogen oxides for gas flow rate of 2, 5, and 10 L/min. Both the reactors have been individually tested, and results show an appreciable removal of \NOX with equal discharge volume. From the results, it was found that both the reactors were an efficient \NOX removal. With consumption of only 36 J/L, the reactors had shown a considerable 45% \DeNOX efficiency.
