Background: Nurses constitute most of the rural and remote Australian health workforce, however staff shortages in these regions are common. Rural exposure, association, and undertaking rural clinical placements can influence health students' decision to work rurally after graduation, however attending university in rural and remote regions has been shown to be a great contributor. An improved understanding of these nursing students' experiences may inform changes to teaching and support strategies for these students, which in turn could improve their retention and completion rates, contributing to a more sustainable rural and remote Australian nursing workforce. This study aimed to explore and describe students' experiences of studying nursing in the context of a satellite university campus located in a remote town, with a focus on education delivery methods, staff, support, student services, and barriers and enablers to successful study. Methodology: Nine students participated in this qualitative descriptive study. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken, allowing participants to reflect on their experiences as nursing students in the context of a geographically remote satellite university campus. The resulting data were grouped into common themes and summarised. Results: Students were generally positive regarding lectures delivered by videoconference or recorded lectures, as they allowed for greater flexibility which accommodated their busy personal lives. Face-to-face teaching was especially valuable, and students were particularly positive about their small cohort size, which enabled the creation of strong, supportive relationships between students, their cohort, and teaching and support staff. However, barriers related to student demographics and some difficulties with course engagement and campus staffing were experienced. Conclusions: The experiences of nursing students at remote university campuses are different from those experienced by traditional, metropolitan university students. Although these nursing students face additional barriers unique to the remote campus context, they benefit from a range of enabling factors, including their close relationships with other students, staff, family, and their local community. Background: Effective leadership in nursing practice is associated with students' preparation during their academic training. Objective: To identify leadership content in Portuguese undergraduate nursing programs. Methodology: Online consultation of course unit syllabuses of 17 undergraduate nursing programs from 39 higher education institutions, whose content was available, conducted between - December September-December 2018. Data were organized using Excel software to characterize the course units, and content analysis was performed using IRAMUTEQ 0.6 alpha 3 software. Results: Leadership content was identified in course units that present the terms "management" and/ or "administration," associated with "nursing" and/or "health," and other related terms, particularly "health care organization." Conclusion: Leadership education is present as content in all programs, although it is not taught as a specific course unit in any undergraduate nursing degrees studied. Leadership education is recognized as essential for developing students' abilities and skills. No links between leadership education and clinical practice were found in the course units. Objective: evaluate the profile of the graduates of Nursing a public college from the perception of skills developed during graduation and the process of professional insertion. Method: quantitative, exploratory and descriptive study. The sample was composed of 216 graduates. The data was collected by a validated questionnaire and sent to a population of 470 egresses via electronic mail. For the analysis of the data, frequencies, mean and standard deviation were applied and, for the correlation, the chi-square test. Results: the majority of the participants were female (88%) and the mean age was 29.62 years. The majority (65%) had an employment relationship, 14% worked in a single institution and 48% started working six months after graduation. Regarding the form of work, 56% work in care, with an average of 4.5 minimum wages and a weekly workload between 37 and 44 hours. The majority reported competence acquisition to practice the profession, assisting the patient in his integrality with ethics and applying technical and scientific concepts in care. Conclusion: the study made it possible to describe the singularities of nurses' education, their insertion in the world of work and the impact on the educational institution, as well as the presentation of specific competences from the perspective of the graduates themselves. Purpose: The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Colombian Ministry of Health and Social Protection have determined a need for an approach to include Equity Focus (EF) and Social Determinants of Health (SDH) in health training programmes in Colombia. We studied the incorporation of EF and SDH in the curricula of several universities in Colombia to identify opportunities to strengthen their inclusion.Methods: Qualitative methodology was performed in two stages: (i) initial exploration (self-administered questionnaires and review of curricula) and (ii) validation of the information (semi-structured interviews).Results: The inclusion of the EF and SDH in university curricula is regarded as an opportunity to address social problems. This approach addresses a broad cross-section of the curriculum, especially in the subjects of public health and Primary Health Care (PHC), where community outreach generates greater internalization by students. The dominance of the biomedical model of study plans and practice scenarios focusing on disease and little emphasis on community outreach are factors that limit the inclusion of the approach.Conclusions: The inclusion of EF and SDH in university curricula in Colombia has primarily focused on increasing the knowledge of various subjects oriented towards understanding the social dynamics or comprehensiveness of health and disease and, in some programmes, through practical courses in community health and PHC. This essay argues that the structure of course prerequisites affects retention of students in a course of study. The same argument suggests that the structure of degree requirements, including quantitative reasoning courses, affects retention in college. In particular, the same set of courses required in a rigid sequence will cause more students to exit the program early than if the same courses were offered in a flexible order. Students' satisfaction with their department is of importance in their attitudes towards school. When it is considered that the students, who receive tourism education at universities, are also consumers of the education service provided at the departments, it is necessary to determine the factors that affect student satisfaction. The aim of this study is to determine the factors that affect the satisfaction of the students, who receive undergraduate tourism education, with the tourism undergraduate programs where they are registered. With this purpose, a questionnaire was performed on 1734 students. The method of classification tree was used in determining the factors affecting students' satisfaction. As a result of the classification tree analysis, it was observed that the variable, which affected students' satisfaction most, was the job considered to be done after graduation and that this was followed by sufficiency of job opportunities after graduation, whether the department was chosen after researching or not, whether one can be a good manager with the education received from the department or not, and whether the courses included current subjects or not, respectively. This study examined the statistical effect of changing from a 10-point to a 5-point response scale on students' evaluation of instruction. Participants were 5,616 students enrolled in classes offered by the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs at a large Western university, who completed both the old evaluation (10-point response) and the new evaluation (5-point response). On average, students used a greater range of points on the scale for the 5-point scale (32 percent) than on the 10-point scale (19 percent). The effects of changing the response scale are discussed. The article reports on the schoolteachers facilitating the students regarding critical thinking (CT) skills. According to the author, facilitating the development of CT in the elite school is a set of potent and complementary elements operating through the school's intellectual ethos. It says that in many classrooms a teacher-centered approach prevails, as authoritative personality transmitting knowledge to passive receivers. The move will make students as a receptacle to be filled by the narrative content of the teachers that leads to a mechanistic way of thinking. Furthermore, students at the elite colleges reach a more complex and refined understanding of things by embracing with the controversies, contradictions, and multiple viewpoints that surround the knowledge base of a subject.

The ‘independent learner’ is a key construct within discourses of educational policy and practice in the UK. Government policy statements stress the importance of developing learner independence, and higher education pedagogical practices tend to rest on the assumption that students are independent learners. This paper draws on research with undergraduate students in a post-1992 university to offer a critical appraisal of the discourse of the independent learner. The paper examines students’ perceptions of independence in both their first year of undergraduate study, and in the later years of their degree courses. Support for learning and issues related to asking for help are discussed. Whilst students tend to both expect and want to be independent, it is suggested that dominant constructions of the independent learner are gendered and culturally specific, and as such are inappropriate for the majority of students in a mass higher education system. Purpose - Aims to explore the future challenges and opportunities for business schools. Design/methodology/approach - Reviews the existing situation for business schools, and draws inferences for the future. Findings - In rapidly developing markets the traditional business school model will most likely survive, assuming that it can be scaled up successfully to meet strong but standard demand for management education. In mature countries it will have to evolve to satisfy a more complex environment with peculiar demands from both students and their employers. Originality/value - In mature markets, top business schools will either transform themselves to meet those demands or cede some of the terrain to alternative providers of business education. Attempts to demonstrate a relationship between students' approaches to studying in higher education and their perceptions of their academic context have been bedevilled by limitations of the research instruments and the problem of aggregating students' perceptions and approaches across different course units. The extended version of the Course Experience Questionnaire ( Wilson et al ., 1997 ) and the Revised Approaches to Studying Inventory ( Entwistle et al ., 2000 ) were adapted for use in distance education and administered in a postal survey to students taking seven courses by distance learning with the Open University. Usable responses were obtained from over 2100 students. Both instruments proved to be remarkably robust, and the students' scores on these two instruments shared 61% of their variance. Students' perceptions of the academic quality of courses in distance education are strongly associated with the approaches to studying that they adopt on those courses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents an economic analysis for grade divergence using market outcomes as explanatory variables from a data set encompassing a sample of 648 colleges and universities for the academic year 1992-1993 in the U.S. The study found that fields of older students and those with a higher percentage of female students had higher average grade point averages (GPAs). On the other hand, those with higher percentage of minorities had lower average GPAs. According to the study, market outcomes are not significant explanatory variables of overall grade point average.

The article discusses the relationship between history and industry relative to education. The isolation of interests, the overcrowded curriculum and the general confusion that pervades the educational system are merely a reflection of the condition in the larger world. One of the greatest difficulties that confront social and educational workers at this time is the prevalence of the habit of dealing with the problems of life in an isolated way. The school has a real function to perform, and the educational machinery will be directed as to fullfill this function.
