This paper presents an experimental testing of a wavelet packet transform (WPT)-based technique for protecting and controlling three-phase voltage-source (VS) pulse-width modulated (PWM) inverters under extreme load conditions. The proposed technique is based on a two-level multiresolution analysis (MRA) applied on output currents of a 3 [phi] VS PWM inverter. The MRA aims to extract certain signatures, which are the second level highest frequency subband coefficients. These coefficients take a nonzero value for any signal that is short-duration, nonperiodic and nonstationary with impulse-super imposed high frequencies. Such a signal perfectly matches a current arising from any typical fault occurring in either the inverter legs or on the load side. The proposed technique is realized using a C-code hosted and executed by a dSPACE ds1102 controller board. The tested inverter supplies loads that include a 3 [phi] Y-connected R - L load, a 3 [phi] squirrel-cage induction motor and a 3 [phi] synchronous reluctance motor. The extreme load conditions include inverter open-leg, motor starting currents and different faults in motor stator windings. The experimental test results show accurate, fast, and effective response to all disturbances including fault currents by the proposed WPT-based technique. Index Terms--Daubechies (db4), motor protection, multiresolution analysis (MRA), wavelet packet transform (WPT), 3 [phi] voltage-source pulse-width modulated (VS PWM) inverters.

This paper presents real-time implementation and testing of a wavelet-packet-transform-based algorithm for power transformer protection. The proposed algorithm is implemented using a DS1102 digital signal processor board and tested on two different three-phase power transformers. Different magnetizing inrush, normal (through-fault) and internal fault currents are investigated for different loading conditions. The results show a complete independence from both the transformer parameters and current transformer saturation. In addition, the proposed algorithm has reduced computational burden, high speed, high accuracy, small required memory, and high reliability. In all cases of the investigated internal faults, the proposed algorithm is capable of identifying the fault and generating a trip signal in less than a quarter cycle based on a 60-Hz system. Index Terms--Current transformer (CT) saturation and Daubechies wavelet (db4), current transformers (CTs), differential current, differential protection, internal faults, magnetizing inrush current, power transformer, wavelet transforms.

This paper presents a novel speed control scheme using a genetic-based fuzzy logic controller (GFLC) for an interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive. The proposed GFLC is developed to have less computational burden, which makes it suitable for real-time implementation. The parameters for the GFLC are tuned by genetic algorithm (GA). The complete drive incorporating the GFLC is successfully implemented in real-time using a digital signal processor board DS 1102 for a laboratory 1-hp interior permanent magnet motor. The efficacy of the proposed GFLC-based IPMSM drive is verified by simulation as well as experimental results at various operating conditions. A performance comparison with a conventional proportional--integral controller is also provided to show the superiority of the proposed controller. The proposed GFLC is found to be robust for high-performance industrial drive applications. Index Terms--Digital signal processor (DSP), fuzzy logic, genetic algorithm (GA), interior permanent-magnet (IPM) motor, real-time implementation, vector control.

This paper presents a novel approach of speed control for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using on-line self tuning artificial neural network (ANN). Based on motor dynamics and non-linear load characteristics, an ANN speed controller is developed and integrated with the vector control scheme of the PMSM drive. The combined use of off-line and on-line weights and biases adjustments offers a unique feature of on-line system identification and precise speed control of a high performance PMSM drive. The complete drive system is implemented in real time using a digital signal processor controller board-DS1102 on a laboratory 1 hp PMSM. using the experimental setup, the performances of the proposed drive system are evaluated under various operating conditions. The test results validate the efficacy of the ANN for precise speed control of the PMSM drive. Furthermore, the use of ANN makes the drive system robust, accurate and insensitive to parameter variations. This work presents a novel technique to distinguish between magnetizing inrush and internal fault currents of a power transformer. The proposed differential algorithm is based on artificial neural network (ANN) and unlike the existing relaying techniques, this method is independent of the harmonic contents of the differential current. A novel neural network is designed and trained using back-propagation algorithm with experimental data. After training the network, simulation and on-line tests are carried out to evaluate the performance of the ANN based algorithm under different fault and energization conditions. Both simulation and experimental results are quite satisfactory.

A stand-alone digital relay has been designed and implemented. The relay can be modified easily to accommodate the protection of different types of transformers by changing the software only. Presented in this paper are the real-time experimental results of five selected algorithms implemented using this digital relay. These algorithms are: discrete Fourier transform, Walsh function, rectangular transform, finite impulse response and least-square. based on the experimental results, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) algorithm is found to be the best algorithm in terms of accuracy and speed for digital implementation of the differential relay for power transformers. Hysteresis current controllers having fixed bands are used in inverters of high-performance ac drives. The switching frequency of such controllers varies over the fundamental period of the modulating signal. The maximum switching frequency (MSF) of these controllers is high. To limit the MSF within the limit of inverter switches, fixed carrier lockouts are usually incorporated. The incorporation of carrier lockouts causes current distortion, and load currents do not confine within the predetermined band. In this paper, two new controllers are proposed. One is a mixed-mode controller of sinusoidal band added to a fixed band, and the other is an equidistant-band current controller. Performances of the proposed controllers are compared with the performances of the conventional fixed-band and sinusoidal-band controllers. Index Terms - AC drives, hysteresis controllers, hysteresis current controllers, PWM inverters, PWM techniques.

A method to analyze the steady-state performance of a stand-alone permanent magnet synchronous generator driven by a diesel engine is presented. The proposed method is based on the equivalent d-q circuits and phasor diagram of such a generator in steady-state condition. A fixed capacitor-thyristor controlled reactor scheme is used to regulate the generator terminal voltage by controlling the thyristor ignition angle. Furthermore the overall system dynamics are modelled in terms of state variables and control inputs. Based on a reduced order linearized model, digital optimal state and output feedback controllers are designed by minimising a quadratic performance index using the dynamic programming technique. The objective of the controller is to maintain the load voltage and frequency constant under varying load conditions. The controller's effectiveness is assessed by examining the closed-loop system response to sudden load changes. Synchronous electric motors -- Research ,Magnetic materials -- Research ,Business ,Electronics ,Electronics and electrical industries - Abstract
Several approaches have been developed for a better simulation of the starting and synchronous performances of an interior-type permanent magnet synchronous motor. The major feature in this study is to combine the finite element analysis with lumped parameter model to provide desirable engineering information but at minimum computational effort. To this end, two co-ordinated stages are involved. One is to develop a unified lumped parameter model applicable for both the steady-state and dynamic analysis. The other stage is to extract individual lumped parameters from the finite element solutions. Based on the derived finite element formulae suitable for both the current source and voltage source supplies, the non-linearity and skin effects are appropriately taken into account.

Several types of ac bearingless motors are proposed. These bearingless motors have conventional four-pole stator windings and additional two- pole windings, whose currents produce radial forces acting on the rotor. General expressions of the machine inductances and radial forces are derived for the cylindrical rotor and salient-pole motors. No-load characteristics of laboratory squirrel-cage induction and reluctance-type synchronous bearingless motors are provided. The test motors were successfully driven by the control circuits.

In this paper, an on-line adaptive loss minimization controller (ALMC) for interior permanent magnet motor drives is introduced after the minimum loss operation of these motors is analyzed. The ALMC provides a novel pattern of change in d-axis stator current to achieve a minimum drive input power at any operating condition. The operation of the ALMC results in a smooth and fast loss minimization, thus overcoming the major drawbacks of existing on-line loss minimization control approaches. The proposed ALMC provides more energy savings in comparison with other methods and extends the application of loss minimization control to a class of motor drives requiring efficient and smooth operation in the face of frequent changes in the operating point. The design and DSP implementation of the ALMC applied to an experimental 1 hp rare-earth IPM motor drive are presented. Several experimental results are given to prove the validity of the ALMC. For most surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors, the electrical time constant is relatively small due to its large air gap. This has been exploited recently with small parameter perturbation techniques to develop observers for the position and speed using measurements of currents. In this paper, a singular perturbation algorithm is experimentally evaluated for both current commutation and closed loop speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor drive. An improved algorithm is then proposed and related implementation issues are presented. Keywords: sensorless control, observer, singular perturbation, speed control, PMSM drive

Background Documentation of patterns and long-term trends in mortality in young people, which reflect huge changes in demographic and social determinants of adolescent health, enables identification of global investment priorities for this age group. We aimed to analyse data on the number of deaths, years of life lost, and mortality rates by sex and age group in people aged 10–24 years in 204 countries and territories from 1950 to 2019 by use of estimates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019. Methods We report trends in estimated total numbers of deaths and mortality rate per 100 000 population in young people aged 10–24 years by age group (10–14 years, 15–19 years, and 20–24 years) and sex in 204 countries and territories between 1950 and 2019 for all causes, and between 1980 and 2019 by cause of death. We analyse variation in outcomes by region, age group, and sex, and compare annual rate of change in mortality in young people aged 10–24 years with that in children aged 0–9 years from 1990 to 2019. We then analyse the association between mortality in people aged 10–24 years and socioeconomic development using the GBD Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite measure based on average national educational attainment in people older than 15 years, total fertility rate in people younger than 25 years, and income per capita. We assess the association between SDI and all-cause mortality in 2019, and analyse the ratio of observed to expected mortality by SDI using the most recent available data release (2017). Findings In 2019 there were 1·49 million deaths (95% uncertainty interval 1·39–1·59) worldwide in people aged 10–24 years, of which 61% occurred in males. 32·7% of all adolescent deaths were due to transport injuries, unintentional injuries, or interpersonal violence and conflict; 32·1% were due to communicable, nutritional, or maternal causes; 27·0% were due to non-communicable diseases; and 8·2% were due to self-harm. Since 1950, deaths in this age group decreased by 30·0% in females and 15·3% in males, and sex-based differences in mortality rate have widened in most regions of the world. Geographical variation has also increased, particularly in people aged 10–14 years. Since 1980, communicable and maternal causes of death have decreased sharply as a proportion of total deaths in most GBD super-regions, but remain some of the most common causes in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia, where more than half of all adolescent deaths occur. Annual percentage decrease in all-cause mortality rate since 1990 in adolescents aged 15–19 years was 1·3% in males and 1·6% in females, almost half that of males aged 1–4 years (2·4%), and around a third less than in females aged 1–4 years (2·5%). The proportion of global deaths in people aged 0–24 years that occurred in people aged 10–24 years more than doubled between 1950 and 2019, from 9·5% to 21·6%. Interpretation Variation in adolescent mortality between countries and by sex is widening, driven by poor progress in reducing deaths in males and older adolescents. Improving global adolescent mortality will require action to address the specific vulnerabilities of this age group, which are being overlooked. Furthermore, indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to jeopardise efforts to improve health outcomes including mortality in young people aged 10–24 years. There is an urgent need to respond to the changing global burden of adolescent mortality, address inequities where they occur, and improve the availability and quality of primary mortality data in this age group. Importance: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemiology. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study is uniquely poised to provide these crucial data. Objective: To describe cancer burden for 29 cancer groups in 195 countries from 1990 through 2017 to provide data needed for cancer control planning. Evidence Review: We used the GBD study estimation methods to describe cancer incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-Adjusted life-years (DALYs). Results are presented at the national level as well as by Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income, educational attainment, and total fertility rate. We also analyzed the influence of the epidemiological vs the demographic transition on cancer incidence. Findings: In 2017, there were 24.5 million incident cancer cases worldwide (16.8 million without nonmelanoma skin cancer [NMSC]) and 9.6 million cancer deaths. The majority of cancer DALYs came from years of life lost (97%), and only 3% came from years lived with disability. The odds of developing cancer were the lowest in the low SDI quintile (1 in 7) and the highest in the high SDI quintile (1 in 2) for both sexes. In 2017, the most common incident cancers in men were NMSC (4.3 million incident cases); tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer (1.5 million incident cases); and prostate cancer (1.3 million incident cases). The most common causes of cancer deaths and DALYs for men were TBL cancer (1.3 million deaths and 28.4 million DALYs), liver cancer (572000 deaths and 15.2 million DALYs), and stomach cancer (542000 deaths and 12.2 million DALYs). For women in 2017, the most common incident cancers were NMSC (3.3 million incident cases), breast cancer (1.9 million incident cases), and colorectal cancer (819000 incident cases). The leading causes of cancer deaths and DALYs for women were breast cancer (601000 deaths and 17.4 million DALYs), TBL cancer (596000 deaths and 12.6 million DALYs), and colorectal cancer (414000 deaths and 8.3 million DALYs). Conclusions and Relevance: The national epidemiological profiles of cancer burden in the GBD study show large heterogeneities, which are a reflection of different exposures to risk factors, economic settings, lifestyles, and access to care and screening. The GBD study can be used by policy makers and other stakeholders to develop and improve national and local cancer control in order to achieve the global targets and improve equity in cancer care. © 2019 American Medical Association. Publisher´s version (útgefin grein)., Background Neurological disorders are increasingly recognised as major causes of death and disability worldwide. The aim of this analysis from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2016 is to provide the most comprehensive and up-to-date estimates of the global, regional, and national burden from neurological disorders. Methods We estimated prevalence, incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs; the sum of years of life lost [YLLs] and years lived with disability [YLDs]) by age and sex for 15 neurological disorder categories (tetanus, meningitis, encephalitis, stroke, brain and other CNS cancers, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, motor neuron diseases, idiopathic epilepsy, migraine, tension-type headache, and a residual category for other less common neurological disorders) in 195 countries from 1990 to 2016. DisMod-MR 2.1, a Bayesian meta-regression tool, was the main method of estimation of prevalence and incidence, and the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) was used for mortality estimation. We quantified the contribution of 84 risks and combinations of risk to the disease estimates for the 15 neurological disorder categories using the GBD comparative risk assessment approach.Findings Globally, in 2016, neurological disorders were the leading cause of DALYs (276 million [95% UI 247–308]) and second leading cause of deaths (9·0 million [8·8–9·4]). The absolute number of deaths and DALYs from all neurological disorders combined increased (deaths by 39% [34–44] and DALYs by 15% [9–21]) whereas their age-standardised rates decreased (deaths by 28% [26–30] and DALYs by 27% [24–31]) between 1990 and 2016. The only neurological disorders that had a decrease in rates and absolute numbers of deaths and DALYs were tetanus, meningitis, and encephalitis. The four largest contributors of neurological DALYs were stroke (42·2% [38·6–46·1]), migraine (16·3% [11·7–20·8]), Alzheimer’s and other dementias (10·4% [9·0–12·1]), and meningitis (7·9% [6·6–10·4]). For the combined neurological disorders, age-standardised DALY rates were significantly higher in males than in females (male-to-female ratio 1·12 [1·05–1·20]), but migraine, multiple sclerosis, and tension-type headache were more common and caused more burden in females, with male-to-female ratios of less than 0·7. The 84 risks quantified in GBD explain less than 10% of neurological disorder DALY burdens, except stroke, for which 88·8% (86·5–90·9) of DALYs are attributable to risk factors, and to a lesser extent Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias (22·3% [11·8–35·1] of DALYs are risk attributable) and idiopathic epilepsy (14·1% [10·8–17·5] of DALYs are risk attributable).Interpretation Globally, the burden of neurological disorders, as measured by the absolute number of DALYs, continues to increase. As populations are growing and ageing, and the prevalence of major disabling neurological disorders steeply increases with age, governments will face increasing demand for treatment, rehabilitation, and support services for neurological disorders. The scarcity of established modifiable risks for most of the neurological burden demonstrates that new knowledge is required to develop effective prevention and treatment strategies., ROA is funded by the National Institutes of Health (U01HG010273).
