This white paper reports on the discussions of the 2018 Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA) topical program 'From bound states to the continuum: Connecting bound state calculations with scattering and reaction theory'. One of the biggest and most important frontiers in nuclear theory today is to construct better and stronger bridges between bound state calculations and calculations in the continuum, especially scattering and reaction theory, as well as teasing out the influence of the continuum on states near threshold. This is particularly challenging as many-body structure calculations typically use a bound state basis, while reaction calculations more commonly utilize few-body continuum approaches. The many-body bound state and few-body continuum methods use different language and emphasize different properties. To build better foundations for these bridges, we present an overview of several bound state and continuum methods and, where possible, point to current and possible future connections. Paper [[14]] proposed a response surface method to further improve the accuracy of alignment prediction for large-span steel-concrete composite beam track cable-stayed bridges. This paper presents a mechanical analysis of the foundation of a temporary offshore platform using a temporary embedded eight-leg support structure. The model is simulated using the finite element simulation software MIDAS-3D, with the modified RANS equation and Forchheimer saturated resistance model used to control the fluid. The stress analysis principle of the structure is simplified by the pile group theory. The stability of the eight-legged supporting structure is investigated under different embedding depths, pile diameters, wave periods, and amplitudes of the main piles. The results show that the eight-legged supporting structure can intercept and divert water flow, eliminating the impact of the water flow on the main piles during large waves. Additionally, as the diameter of the structure increases under the same wave conditions, the influence of the base volume and surface curvature gradually increases, deteriorating the stress environment of the main pile and decreasing the supporting effect of the eight-legged support structure. Numerical calculations of the seabed rock foundation of the eight-leg supporting structure show that the shallow pile foundation undergoes significant deformation, while the eight-leg supporting structure is still supported by the dead weight of the main pile. The seepage field of a suspended waterproof curtain strip foundation pit in a deep phreatic aquifer is theoretically analyzed, and a calculation method for the foundation pit water inflow and water level outside the curtain is derived. In this paper, it is assumed that the horizontal hydraulic gradient of the seepage field above the aquiclude below the bottom of the waterproof curtain decreases linearly. The separation variable method is used to solve the seepage field in the regular area inside the foundation pit, and the hydraulic head distribution function inside the foundation pit is obtained. According to the hydraulic head distribution function inside the foundation pit, the calculation expression of the water inflow of the foundation pit is further deduced theoretically. On this basis, the improved resistance coefficient method is applied to link the water level outside the pit with the solved hydraulic head inside the pit and solved. In addition, the calculation results presented in this study are compared with the calculation results of the existing model and the measured data of the foundation pit project of Yangwan Station, which proves that the analytical method can effectively meet the requirements of engineering applications. The physical and mechanical properties of red clay have a significant influence on the bearing characteristics of pile foundations. Therefore, this paper conducted model tests to study the influence of different red clay water content (16~−20%) and different compaction degrees (88~−92%) on the bearing characteristics of pile foundations. The results show that the load–displacement curves of the test pile generally exhibit a steep type. The ultimate bearing capacity of the test pile increases gradually with the compaction degree from 86% to 92%. However, the ratio of load borne by the side of the pile increases from 54.8% to 67.8%, while the ratio of load borne by the end decreases from 45.2% to 32.2%. The ratio of load borne by the pile end to that borne by the pile side also decreases gradually from 0.825 to 0.476. The ultimate bearing capacity of the test pile decreases gradually with the moisture content from 17% to 26%, showing a decreasing trend. However, the ratio of load borne by the pile side decreases from 69.5% to 51.9%, while the ratio of load borne by the end increases from 30.5% to 48.1%. The ratio of load borne by the pile end to that borne by the pile side also increases gradually from 0.439 to 0.927. This indicates that increasing the compaction degree or reducing the moisture content has a more significant effect on increasing the side resistance. In this paper, the ultimate bearing capacity of test piles are calculated by the Mohr–Coulomb criterion (M-CC) and Duncan–Chang hyperbolic model (D-CHM), respectively. The results show that M-CC and D-CHM methods can accurately calculate the bearing capacity of the pile foundation in red clay. On the basis of the Fengqi Chaoming project in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, this paper investigates the influence of pile foundation construction on the existing tunnels in a metro protection area to ensure the stability and safety of the pile foundation construction in the area of Hangzhou Metro Line 2 through in situ pile tests and numerical simulations. The test results show that the pile foundation construction has a certain influence on the existing metro tunnels, and the degree of influence gradually decreases as the distance between the pile foundation and the metro tunnel increases. The corresponding impact level for the pile foundation at 12 m from the tunnel is 1.06 mm, and that for the pile foundation at 4.9 m from the tunnel is 1.18 mm. Different types of pile foundations also lead to different degrees of influence. The maximum settlement corresponding to triaxial cement mixing piles is 1.89 mm, while the hard-method occlusal piles is 1.18 mm. The monitoring point of the metro tunnel with the smallest distance from the pile foundation experiences the largest deformation, but several sets of deformation data meet the requirements of the deformation control index, indicating that the pile foundation construction is safe and controllable. During devastating earthquakes, soil liquefaction has disastrous outcomes on bridge foundations, as mentioned in books and published research. To avoid foundation failure when the surrounding soil is fully liquefied, a bridge's pile foundation design could be such that the bridge pier is directly resting on the top of a large-diameter monopile instead of the traditional multiple small-diameter piles. This paper discusses the gap of insufficient studies on large-diameter monopiles to support railway bridges subjected to buckling instability and the lack of simplified tools to quickly assess structural reliability. A framework could quickly assess the structural reliability by formulating a simplified reliability analysis. This study focused on pure buckling with shear deformation and reliability assessment to calculate a monopile's failure probability in fully liquefied soils. In reliability assessment, with the critical pile length (Lcrit) and the unsupported pile length (Luns), the limit state function g(x) = [Lcrit − Luns] thus forms the basis for assessing the safety and reliability of a structure, indicating the state of success or failure. The Lcrit formulation is accomplished with a differential equation. Here, Luns assumes various depths of liquefied soil. The reliability index's (β) formulation is achieved through the Hasofer–Lind concept and then double-checked through a normal or Gaussian distribution. A case study was conducted using a high-speed railway bridge model from a published research to demonstrate the application of the proposed methodology. To validate the minimum pile diameter for buckling instability when a fully liquefied soil's thickness reaches the condition that Lcrit = Luns, this study applies the published research of Bhattacharya and Tokimatsu. The validation results show good agreement for 0.85–0.90 m monopile diameters. With a monopile diameter smaller than 0.85 m, the Lcrit = Luns limit was at lesser depths, while with a monopile diameter larger than 0.90 m, the Lcrit = Luns limit was at deeper depths. A load increase notably affected the large-diameter monopiles because the Lcrit movement required a longer range. In fully liquefied soil, buckling will likely happen in piles with a diameter between 0.50 m and 1.60 m because the calculated probability of failure (Pf) value is nearly one. Conversely, buckling instability will likely not happen in monopiles with a diameter of 1.80–2.20 m because the Pf value is zero. Hence, the outcome of this case study suggests that the reliable monopile minimum diameter is 1.80 m for supporting a high-speed railway bridge. Lastly, this paper analyzed the shear deformation effect on large-diameter monopiles, the result of which was 0.30% of Lcrit. Foundation scour is the erosion of sediments around pile foundations by wave and current in offshore wind energy. This phenomenon destabilizes foundations and poses a threat to pile safety. Therefore, scour protection becomes a crucial challenge in offshore wind projects. This paper reviews and synthesizes recent publications and patented technologies related to scour protection. Considering the primary engineering concerns, the paper proposes design principles for effective scour protection schemes to standardize evaluation criteria. These principles prioritize efficacy, independence, and cost-efficiency, enabling the analysis of scour protection scheme applicability. In addition, this paper summarizes and describes common protection schemes in the literature. The effectiveness of their protection is analyzed and summarized, and their economic and performance independence is evaluated. This paper categorizes flow-altering scour protection schemes found in the literature. Based on a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms and engineering requirements of scour protection, the paper proposes a focus on determining the erosion reduction rate curve ( E p − U / U c curve) as a key criterion for evaluating the effectiveness of protection schemes under varying flow velocities and the erosion reduction rate of scour protection schemes under extreme conditions. The study highlights the necessity of establishing a comprehensive design evaluation methodology, which is crucial for addressing the significant challenges related to scour encountered in offshore wind power projects. The construction of deep foundation pits in subway stations can affect the settlement of existing buildings adjacent to the pits to varying degrees. In this paper, the Long Short-Term Memory neural network prediction model of building settlement caused by deep foundation pit construction was established using the monitoring data of building settlement around a deep foundation pit project in a metro station in Shanghai, and appropriate hyperparameters including batch size and training set ratio were determined. The accuracy of settlement prediction for single-point and multi-point monitoring of buildings was analyzed. Meanwhile, the effects of construction parameters, engineering geological parameters, and spatial parameters on the accuracy of building settlement prediction were investigated. The results show that the batch size and training set proportion can be taken as 16 and 60%, respectively, when using the Long Short-Term Memory neural network prediction model. The proposed Long Short-Term Memory network model can stably predict the settlement of buildings adjacent to deep foundation pits. The accuracy of settlement prediction at a single point of a building (80%) is lower than the accuracy of coordinated prediction at multiple points (88%). More accurate settlement prediction is achieved with the total reverse construction method. The more detailed the consideration of working conditions, geological parameters, and spatial parameters, the better. The evaluation metrics of the prediction model, RMSE, MAE, and R2, were 0.57 mm, 0.65 mm, and 0.91, respectively. This document is a discussion of a research paper titled "Numerical Study of the Effect of Ground Improvement on Basal Heave Stability for Deep Excavations in Normally Consolidated Clays" by Ari Surya Abdi and Chang-Yu Ou. The authors conducted a three-dimensional finite-element method analysis to investigate the impact of ground improvement on the stability of deep excavations in soft clays. They proposed a modified Terzaghi's method based on their findings. Sediment scour numerical simulation plays a critical role in the design of water-resistant foundation engineering, and this paper addresses a significant gap in most related studies, which often overlook the transformation of sediment and struggle to identify the actual riverbed obscured by yielding bed and suspended load. To tackle this challenge, a comprehensive sediment model based on the meshless Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method was developed. Firstly, to enhance computational efficiency and mitigate the high cost of Fluid-Solid Interaction (FSI) between water and sediments, cohesionless sediment grains were modelled as non-Newtonian fluids, with yield strength determined according to a combined strength criterion. Subsequently, sediment transformation and identification were determined based on sediment particle velocity and shear stress, with the seepage force driving yield sediment particle motion at the interface. The effectiveness of this comprehensive sediment model was validated through comparison with three scour experiments. The results show better agreement between the model and experimental data, with a root-mean-square error of less than 2.17% in scour morphology simulation and successful identification of the actual post-scouring bed surface in each case. However, the free surface simulation in this model still exhibits slight error, with a root-mean-square error of less than 8.35%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the limitations of planar mode wharfs, this paper proposes a new type of wharf—the three-dimensional cantilevered wharf. The proposed wharf is defined as an improvement of the traditional wharf, extending the traditional wharf upward and cantilevering out to the sea. The three-dimensional cantilevered wharf is a composite truss structure that meets structural and functional requirements. The composite truss structure is formed by connecting the beams of frame structures as a whole. The material consumption of the three-dimensional cantilevered wharf is decreased by controlling stresses and optimizing components. A finite element model of the proposed wharf, with a length of 200 m, width of 105 m, and cantilever length of 80 m, was established to analyze the basic mechanical performance. In this paper, the force distribution of the pile foundation, the vertical force transfer efficiency of web members, the structural stiffness, and the natural frequencies of the proposed wharf are analyzed. Tests regarding the stress and stiffness of different plane cantilever trusses are carried out, and finite element analysis is used for comparison. The test results show that the high-rise cantilever truss has a great in-plane stiffness and a reasonable component stress distribution. Primarily generated at the interface between the wheel and the rail, railroad vibrations then propagate through the supporting soil. If these vibrations reach nearby bridges and buildings, they amplify the vibration nuisance and cause ground noise, which has detrimental effects on nearby residents, sensitive equipment, and historic structures. By analyzing measured data from metro vibration field vibration experiments, this article attempts to contribute to the body of knowledge on environmental vibration propagation patterns by offering insightful conclusions. Before analyzing the deformation response of the metro jet system (MJS) vibration isolation piles to the structure and the ground, we investigated the effect of MJS vibration isolation piles in the ground of the existing subway tunnel structure on the control of vibration of the proximate structure and conducted dynamic tests on the vibration of bridges without vibration isolation measures caused by operating subway trains. The tests determined that the acceleration of the bridge's lateral vibration exceeded the code limit; one of the contributing factors was that the bridge's structure had already sustained damage. The utilization of MJS isolation piles was also discovered to safeguard the extant bridge pile foundations. The paper presents an innovation in the form of economically viable vibration mitigation strategies that were implemented subsequent to the identification that the lateral vibration acceleration of the preexisting bridge surpassed the prescribed code standards. The m-method is a commonly used method to calculate the internal force and deformation of pile foundations under lateral loads. However, for squeezed branch piles, the increase in the load-bearing plate leads to changes in the pile section and the generation of a resistance bending moment under loading, which means the load–displacement relationship at the load-bearing plate will no longer satisfy the linear relationship. In this paper, a hyperbolic load transfer model is established to describe the nonlinear relationship between the soil resistance and lateral displacement at the branch of the pile, and the m-method is used for the straight section of the pile. Laboratory model tests are used to verify the correlation between theory and experimentation. The results show that the theory is consistent with the measured curve. On the basis of the theoretical calculation, the influence of the bearing plate and pile body parameters on the force of the squeezed branch pile is analyzed. The research shows that that the bearing capacity of the squeezed branch pile is improved by increasing the plate's diameter, placing the plate closer to the ground, and ensuring that the pile top is embedded. The theoretical calculation method established in this paper can correctly and accurately reflect the bearing capacity characteristics of squeezed branch piles under horizontal loads, and it is more safe than performing measurements. Additionally, it can be applied to squeezed branch piles with different plate diameters, plate positions, plate section forms, and plate quantities as well as for piles with different boundary conditions and soil conditions. Moreover, it can also be applied to other pile shapes. This method is of significance for the analysis of the bearing characteristics of piles with variable sections under lateral loads. This paper assesses trending AI foundation models, especially emerging computer vision foundation models and their performance in natural landscape feature segmentation. While the term foundation model has quickly garnered interest from the geospatial domain, its definition remains vague. Hence, this paper will first introduce AI foundation models and their defining characteristics. Built upon the tremendous success achieved by Large Language Models (LLMs) as the foundation models for language tasks, this paper discusses the challenges of building foundation models for geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) vision tasks. To evaluate the performance of large AI vision models, especially Meta's Segment Anything Model (SAM), we implemented different instance segmentation pipelines that minimize the changes to SAM to leverage its power as a foundation model. A series of prompt strategies were developed to test SAM's performance regarding its theoretical upper bound of predictive accuracy, zero-shot performance, and domain adaptability through fine-tuning. The analysis used two permafrost feature datasets, ice-wedge polygons and retrogressive thaw slumps because (1) these landform features are more challenging to segment than man-made features due to their complicated formation mechanisms, diverse forms, and vague boundaries; (2) their presence and changes are important indicators for Arctic warming and climate change. The results show that although promising, SAM still has room for improvement to support AI-augmented terrain mapping. The spatial and domain generalizability of this finding is further validated using a more general dataset EuroCrops for agricultural field mapping. High-pile foundation is a common form of deep foundation commonly used in ocean environments, such as docks and bridge sites. Aiming at the problem of bearing capacity of high pile foundations, this paper proposes the calculation of bearing capacity and the analysis of scour depth of high pile foundations under the action of scour based on the modified p-y curve. In this paper, three kinds of scour mechanisms—natural evolution scour, general scour, and local scour—are described; and the calculation methods of scour widely used at present are compared and analyzed. The solution of the vertical stress of soil around the pile under local scour is solved and applied to the β method to solve the lateral resistance of the pile under local scour. The local erosion is equivalent to the whole erosion, and the expression of the ultimate soil resistance before and after the equivalent is calculated, respectively, according to the principle that the ultimate soil resistance at a certain point above the equivalent pile end remains unchanged. The distance from the equivalent soil surface to the pile end can be obtained simultaneously, and then the equivalent erosion depth, p-y curve of sand at different depths, and high pile bearing capacity can be obtained. Finally, it is found that the bending moment of a single pile body varies along the pile body in the form of a parabola, and the maximum bending moment of the pile body is below the mud surface and increases with the increase in horizontal load. When the scouring depth is 30 m, the horizontal load is 25 KN, and the maximum bending moment of the pile body is about 150 N·m. The data with a relative error greater than 10% accounted for only 16.6% of the total data, and the error between the calculated value and the measured value was small. As an important infrastructure, the floating platform plays a significant role in coastal and oceanic development. The single‐point mooring system anchored by piles has been widely used to support floating offshore platforms. However, few studies in the field of floating structures focused on the dynamic reliability and mechanical analysis of the mooring pile foundation under wind and wave vibration. A Monte Carlo‐based mooring pile reliability analysis method was introduced in this paper, which could consume the calculation source significantly. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation, the dynamic reliability of the mooring pile system of the floating platform was analyzed and discussed. Finally, considering the material cost, the design of the mooring pile of floating platform was optimized. The primary objective of this case study is to evaluate the effectiveness of drone-based ground penetrating radar (GPR) in detecting and mapping underground water levels and soil-to-rock boundaries. This knowledge is crucial for accurate structural engineering analyses, including foundation engineering and site-specific response evaluations. The paper also considers drone-based GPR to overcome common urban obstacles, topographic variations, and environmental factors by simply flying over them, offering a promising solution to these challenges. The research utilized drone-based GPR equipped with an unshielded 150 MHz dipole antenna and employed filtering procedures to diminish the effect of above-ground obstacles on the interpretation of our results. The study unequivocally demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of drone-based GPR in these applications, reassuring the civil engineering community. The findings of this study significantly advance our understanding of drone-based GPR technology for mapping disturbed soil boundaries and water table levels in foundation engineering and site response applications and provide valuable recommendations for optimizing its performance in complicated terrains, thereby inspiring and guiding future research and practice in this field. In general, pile foundations are utilized to support structures like tall buildings, bridges, and transmission towers, which are frequently subjected to lateral stresses initiated by wind, action of waves, earthquakes, or traffic loads. Several high-rise structures, highway and railroad overpasses, as well as transmission towers, are constructed near slopes and rely on pile foundations for support. Due to the effects of wind and waves, pile foundations are continuously subjected to cyclic loads. For piles supporting tall buildings, transmission towers, offshore structures, or infrastructure in seismic zones, 1-way or 2-way cyclic lateral loads are commonly applied. Therefore, while designing pile foundations, it is essential to understand how piles behave laterally when they are located near a sloping crest. One of the primary challenges in ensuring the efficient functioning of the superstructure is analyzing how the soil and foundations respond when exposed to long-term lateral loads, such as wind, over an extended period on the piles of offshore platforms. Because of the presence of slope, the pile's lateral load capacity decreased due to the reduced ability of the soil to provide passive resistance. This paper presents small-scale 1-g model tests conducted on the sand to assess the loss of pile's lateral capacity when subjected to 100 cycles under 1 and 2-way cyclic loading. The Relative Density (60%) and varying slopes (Horizontal ground, 1V:3H) with varying spacing (5D and 7D) and aspect ratios (L/D) of 25 and 40 were implemented in this study. Cyclic lateral load tests were performed for sloping as well as horizontal ground. A major reduction in lateral capacity, exceeding 60%, was observed due to the application of cyclic loading. Moreover, the transition from horizontal ground (HG) to sloping ground (SG) decreased the maximum bending moment by 25–40%. This study exemplifies the piles' behaviour when subjected to cyclic lateral loading while resting on a sloping crest, which represents a critical scenario in pile foundation design. In recent years, foundation pit construction has been rapidly developing in the direction of deep and large-scale, leading to the frequent occurrence of construction accidents. The pit construction process is characterised by a complex environment, high construction risk, and numerous coupling effects between the construction risk factors. In this paper, 23 main accident-causing factors in foundation pit construction are determined based on the six major risk accident types. In addition, the Grey-DEMATEL-Fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method of the risk evaluation model is introduced for better prediction and judgment of risk level, which combines the grey system theory with the method of decision-making experimental analysis, and in the case of inaccurate or incomplete information, the use of less data can achieve the evaluation results with a high degree of reliability, and it will effectively avoid the impact of the lack of information as well as the subjectivity in the process of risk evaluation. Through the Grey-DEMATEL method, the central degree value for each risk indicator factor is calculated, the coupling role and importance of each risk indicator are analysed, and the indicator weights are calculated. Based on the calculated weights, the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method is used to evaluate the overall risk level. The empirical research on the deep foundation pit construction project of Haitangxi subway station in Chongqing reveals that the excessive lateral earth pressure on the pile wall is the most prominent risk factor. The overall risk level of the construction process is medium, and the risk is within the controllable range. This paper presents a thorough reliability assessment of cavity foundation systems involving the generation of 272 datasets using Plaxis 2D automation. The parameters were systematically varied across feasible ranges, and Sobol‐based sensitivity analysis identified the negligible influence of the soil modulus of elasticity (E) on subsequent reliability analyses. A robust 1D‐CNN surrogate model was developed to predict the critical foundation responses by integrating Gaussian white noise to simulate real‐world uncertainties. A log transformation with 1,000 bootstrap samples was chosen for resampling non‐normally distributed data. This study employed a novel approach utilising 1D‐CNN regressor models for bearing capacity (BC) prediction, achieving promising results with R2 values of 0.953 and 0.945 for BC in the training and testing phases, respectively. Bootstrapping resampling facilitates reliability analysis preparation and ensures robustness in handling complex data. Simulated noise varied with specific variance (p) from 0.01 to 0.5, allowing the examination of model efficacy under varying noise levels. Both the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) and first‐order reliability method (FORM) were employed, revealing a reliability index (β) of 2.046 for FORM and 2.066 for MCS. This indicates a 0.976% increase in β and a 75% increase in the probability of failure transitioning from FORM to MCS, underscoring the model's sensitivity to analytical methods. In recent years, the advancement of photovoltaic power generation technology has led to a surge in the construction of photovoltaic power stations in desert gravel areas. However, traditional equal cross-section photovoltaic bracket pile foundations require improvements to adapt to the unique challenges of these environments. This paper introduces a new type of photovoltaic bracket pile foundation named the "serpentine pile foundation" based on the principle of biomimicry. Utilizing experimental data, numerical simulation technology was employed to comprehensively investigate the pullout resistance, compressive resistance, and horizontal bearing performance of the serpentine pile foundation. Comparative analysis with traditional square and circular pile foundations revealed the serpentine pile foundation's significant advantages in all performance indexes. The serpentine pile exhibits a significantly higher ultimate uplift bearing capacity of 70.25 kN, which is 8.56 times that of the square pile and 10.94 times that of the circular pile. The paper describes load and resistance factor design (LRFD) calibration for the resistance factor used in the Stiffness Method internal stability soil failure limit state for geogrid mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls. The Stiffness Method was recently adopted in the current American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials LRFD Bridge Design Specifications in the US, and will appear in the next edition of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. The paper describes the details of the calibration of the soil failure limit state which is unique to the Stiffness Method. Calibration outcomes include consideration of the concept of level of understanding in the selection of nominal load and resistance values which is unique to LRFD foundation engineering practice in Canada. A practical conclusion from these calculations is that if product line-specific creep test data are available to estimate the reinforcement secant creep stiffness used for design, then a resistance factor of 1.0 is reasonable for US practice. If only minimum average roll value tensile strength data are available, then a value of 0.95 is recommended for US practice. Deep foundation pit settlement prediction based on machine learning is widely used for ensuring the safety of construction, but previous studies are limited to not fully considering the spatial correlation between monitoring points. This paper proposes a transformer-based deep learning method that considers both the spatial and temporal correlations among excavation monitoring points. The proposed method creates a dataset that collects all excavation monitoring points into a vector to consider all spatial correlations among monitoring points. The deep learning method is based on the transformer, which can handle the temporal correlations and spatial correlations. To verify the model's accuracy, it was compared with an LSTM network and an RNN-LSTM hybrid model that only considers temporal correlations without considering spatial correlations, and quantitatively compared with previous research results. Experimental results show that the proposed method can predict excavation deformations more accurately. The main conclusions are that the spatial correlation and the transformer-based method are significant factors in excavation deformation prediction, leading to more accurate prediction results. This paper focuses on the application of pile foundation underpinning technology in a deep foundation pit of a subway Viaduct Project in Beijing. The study aims to address the engineering characteristics of the project, including a large number of new piles, a wide span of underpinning abutment, a long length of deep foundation pit, and a wide range of influences. This research utilizes field monitoring and numerical simulation methods to investigate the pile foundation underpinnings. The impact and management of road-deep foundation pit construction are considered, as well as their combined effect on subway viaducts and track structures. The primary accomplishments are as follows: (1) By analyzing the data from on-site deformation monitoring, it is evident that the pier exhibits maximum vertical deformation and maximum transverse deformation at the same location. The measuring locations are specifically situated on Pier 7# at the pile foundation underpinning. The maximum vertical and transverse deformations of the track are directly proportional to the maximum deformation of the pier. (2) By comparing the numerical simulation results with the field monitoring data, it is observed that although there is some discrepancy between the two, the deformation trend is largely consistent. With the advancement of urban underground space networks, there has been a rise in foundation pit projects near existing tunnels. The construction of these foundation pits adjacent to existing tunnels can result in soil disturbance and stress redistribution, leading to additional deformation and internal force within the tunnels. This paper delves into the two-stage analysis method, outlining the calculation of additional stress in the initial stage considering various engineering factors and the methods for determining tunnel displacement and internal force in the subsequent stage. Through an engineering example and numerical simulations, the theoretical calculations were validated. The maximum displacement generated by the tunnel is −4.85 mm and −5.10 mm, respectively. The maximum error is only 5.9%, which confirms the validity of the theoretical approach. The analysis demonstrates that incorporating the unloading model of the bottom and surrounding side walls of the foundation pit is essential when calculating additional stress in the first stage. Moreover, the presence of engineering dewatering and double-hole tunnels can counterbalance the additional stress, with deviations of only 4.4% and 2.5%, respectively. In the second stage, factoring in the shear action and lateral soil action in the foundation and tunnel model enhances the accuracy of stress mode representation (accuracy increased by 18.8% and 29.3%, respectively). With the slowdown of urban incremental construction in China, reinforcement and renovation of existing buildings have become a hot topic in the fields of engineering and theoretical research. Underpinning pile foundations and underground excavation are commonly used methods for foundation renovation and reinforcement in existing buildings reinforcement and renovation projects. Nevertheless, there remains a dearth of relevant research concerning the effects of different excavation methods on the stability of existing structures during foundation reinforcement and underground space excavation. In the context of existing building pile foundation underpinning and underground excavation, this paper adopts a numerical simulation research method based on the modification of experimental model parameters, and it compares the overall stress changes and settlement of the underpinning pile foundation and the building under two modes of lateral and vertical excavation. The results indicate that there is a good agreement between the stress and settlement changes of the components in the indoor model experiment and the finite element simulation. Both excavation methods show that lateral and vertical excavation will generate maximum stress on the bottom components of the upper structure and the upper part of the pile. In terms of differences, vertical excavation will cause greater overall settlement of the building, but the settlement in different areas is basically the same. On the other hand, lateral excavation will have smaller overall settlement but may cause the structure to tilt. At the same time, lateral excavation will cause greater stress changes in the columns in the structure. Engineers pay more and more attention to the economic benefits of foundation pit engineering. At present, the optimal design of the foundation pit supporting structure mainly focuses on strength and functional design, and there is no mature theoretical design method for deformation control. In this paper, a method for calculating the overall deformation of a foundation pit supporting structure based on the principle of minimum potential energy is proposed. Based on this method, the optimal design of the foundation pit of Guangzhou Baiyun District Comprehensive Transportation Hub Metro Station is realized. The deformation calculation results and optimization design scheme are validated by finite element numerical simulation and field monitoring data. The results show that the proposed theoretical algorithm predicts the pile deformation curves better than the finite element method, suggesting the proposed theoretical method is reasonable and the optimization scheme of the retaining pile is feasible. Addressing the challenges for detecting underwater damage to the structures with pile foundation, this study presents the design of an adsorption-operated robotic system. Initially, a prototype is proposed for an adsorption-operated robot that is equipped with an automatic movement mechanism. To account for the disturbance of the drag force in the control system, a hydrodynamic numerical model for the detection robot is established. The numerical results of the drag force are then integrated into the control system, leading to the design of a force-redeemed active disturbance rejection controller. Furthermore, a novel detection algorithm based on the image segmentation network UNet is developed for the automatic identification of damages. The performance of the controller and detection algorithm is evaluated against traditional methods. The results indicate that the proposed force-redeemed active disturbance rejection controller outperforms traditional PID and ADR controllers in terms of overshoot and adjustment time. Moreover, the developed detection algorithm exhibits superior performance in precision, F1 score, and mean intersection over union compared to the traditional algorithms of FCN, PSPnet, Deeplabv3, and UNet. With the increasing utilization of urban underground space in densely populated cities, it is crucial to understand the interactive impact of the excavation sequence on the excavation group of foundation pits. The foundation pit of Tianta Station of Tianjin Metro Line 7 was adjacent to a deep foundation pit of an apartment, which provided a good case for the study of simultaneous excavation of foundation pits. In this paper, based on two deep foundation pit excavation projects, a finite element model was established to better understand the mutual influence of simultaneous foundation pit excavation. The responses of the two deep foundation pits under five different excavation sequences were investigated, including the horizontal displacement of the ground‐connected wall and the displacement of the top of the wall, the settlement of the ground surface, and the supporting axial force of the basement floor slab. The position of the maximum horizontal displacement in different modes is the same, and the shape of the deformation curve was fish‐bellied. When both pits B and C were excavated simultaneously, the surface settlement between adjacent pits was smaller than in other working conditions. Mode 5 is optimal among these five modes, in which not only the construction progress is the fastest but also the underground wall deformation and the ground settlement are relatively small. The findings and lessons learned from these two adjacent pits, both of which were constructed using the cap‐and‐reverse method, can help professionals optimize excavation design and construction, as well as performance prediction and control. This paper examines the effects of soil–structure and structure–soil–structure interactions in the design of foundations for adjacent concrete buildings, which are located on soft soils. The study employs an elasto-plastic model through static (quasi-dynamic) analysis using the direct finite element method by applying earthquake loads in one time step. Two concrete buildings, one with 6 stories and another with 12 stories, were modelled and numerically analysed using ANSYS. The foundations of these two buildings were analysed separately and compared when they were assumed to be adjacent to each other. The designs of the buildings' foundations were evaluated independently and in comparison with each other to determine the impact of these interactions. The results indicated that accounting for the effects of both interactions increases the total deformation of the foundations. Additionally, the study found that adjusting the subgrade reaction modulus values (Ks) for different sections of the foundation can be a practical method to address both interaction effects simultaneously. This method also optimizes the weight of reinforcement material (Wr) by reducing it by 15% and modifying the positions and quantities of reinforcements used and considering various subgrade reaction modulus values in foundation design. Simplified methods of static free head stiffness of the semi-rigid foundation under lateral loads were limited to flexible or rigid behavior by the critical length of piles. This would lead to errors when predicting the static or dynamic performance of their upper structures in OWT Systems. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the head static stiffness of the semi-rigid pile without considering the critical length. Firstly, case studies using the energy-based variational method encompassing nearly twenty thousand cases were conducted. These cases involved different types of foundations, including steel pipe piles and concrete caissons, in three types of soil: homogeneous soil, linearly inhomogeneous soil, and heterogeneous soil. Through the analysis of these cases, a series of polynomial equations of three kinds of head static stiffness, containing the relative stiffness of the pile and soil, the slenderness ratio, and Poisson's ratio, were developed to capture the semi-rigid behavior of the foundations. Furthermore, the lateral deflection, the rotation for concrete caissons in the bridge projects, and several natural frequencies of three cases about the OWT system considering the SSI effect were carried out. the error of high-order frequency of the OWT system reached 13% after considering the semi-rigid effect of the foundation. In highway reconstruction and expansion projects, the impact of the abandoned dreg body produced by the original highway on the new bridge project cannot be ignored. If the abandoned dregs are not handled properly, they will cause great threat to the operation of the new highway as well as to the safety of the surrounding environment and personnel. In this paper, based on a South China highway reconstruction and expansion project, a model of the abandoned dreg body, bridge pile and anti-slide pile is established with the help of finite difference software FLAC3D 5.0. The calculation results show that compared with burying the anti-slide pile, slope cutting is more effective for improving the stability of the abandoned dreg body. Under the action of vertical force intensity, the displacement of the top of the pile increases continuously, and the maximum bending moment of the pile body increases firstly and then decreases. The pile displacement and bending moment of the bridge pile increase significantly in the storm condition compared with the normal condition. In addition, the abandoned dreg body hazard prevention and control technical measures are studied. The impacts of different locations of anti-slide pile burial on bridge piles are analyzed and compared, and it is determined that the optimal location of anti-slide pile burial is the middle of the secondary slope. The global demand for energy is on the rise, accompanied by increasing requirements for low-carbon environmental protection. In recent years, China's "double carbon action" initiative has brought about new development opportunities across various sectors. The concept of energy pile foundation aims to harness geothermal energy, aligning well with green, low-carbon, and sustainable development principles, thus offering extensive application prospects in engineering. Drawing from existing research globally, this paper delves into four key aspects impacting the thermodynamic properties of energy piles: the design of buried pipes, pile structure, heat storage materials within the pipe core, and soil treatment around the pile using carbon fiber urease mineralization. Leveraging the innovative mineralization technique known as urease-induced carbonate mineralization precipitation (EICP), this study employs COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software to analyze heat transfer dynamics and establish twelve sets of numerical models for energy piles. The buried pipe design encompasses two types, U-shaped and spiral, while the pile structure includes concrete solid energy piles and tubular energy piles. Soil conditions around the pile are classified into undisturbed sand and carbon fiber-infused EICP mineralized sand. Different inner core heat storage materials such as air, water, unaltered sand, and carbon fiber-based EICP mineralized sand are examined within tubular piles. Key findings indicate that spiral buried pipes outperform U-shaped ones, especially when filled with liquid thermal energy storage (TES) materials, enhancing temperature control of energy piles. The carbon fiber urease mineralization technique significantly improves heat exchange between energy piles and surrounding soil, reducing soil porosity to 4.9%. With a carbon fiber content of 1.2%, the ultimate compressive strength reaches 1419.4 kPa. Tubular energy piles mitigate pile stress during summer temperature fluctuations. Pile stress distribution varies under load and temperature stresses, with downward and upward friction observed at different points along the pile length. Environmental microvibrations, often originating from unidentified sources, pose a significant challenge for predicting and controlling their complex wave fields, potentially leading to measurement errors of sensitive instruments in high-precision laboratories and impacting the accuracy of experimental outcomes. Therefore, investigating effective control measures for environmental microvibrations under passive conditions is key to addressing such engineering issues. This paper presents a finite element analysis method tailored to address environmental microvibrations in the absence of apparent sources. This method involves obtaining the vibration time history at specific ground surface points through field measurements and combining the Rayleigh wave velocity attenuation character with depth at the center frequencies of one-third octave bands within the 1–100 Hz frequency range; the vibration time history at any depth in the soil is calculated. These calculated vibrations are then applied as input loads to the corresponding nodes on one boundary of the foundation–soil model, serving as the source of environmental microvibrations. The predicted results are compared with measured data and the empirical point source input method, indicating that this approach is more precise and efficient, providing valuable reference for the prediction and analysis of environmental microvibrations. With the acceleration of transportation infrastructure and the densification of transportation networks, there has been an increase in bridge pile construction near oil and gas pipelines. Selecting bridge pile construction methods with minimal impact and reducing the adverse effects of bridge pile construction on nearby oil and gas pipelines are of great importance. This paper uses FLAC3D 6.0 software to simulate and analyze the impact of two different pile construction methods, rotary drilling and impact drilling, on adjacent oil pipelines. The results show that the horizontal displacement of oil pipelines during rotary drilling construction is nearly 90% lower than that of the traditional impact drilling method, and the axial stress is reduced by nearly 85%. Furthermore, numerical simulations of rotary drilling under different conditions were conducted to analyze and summarize the patterns of how different conditions affect construction vibration and stress. Clay soil is a common building foundation material, and its permeability is very important for the safety of foundation pits and the later settlement of buildings. However, the traditional Kozeny-Carman (K-C) equation shows serious discrepancies when predicting the permeability of clay in building foundation treatment. Therefore, solving the application of K-C equation in clay is a problem faced by the engineers and scholars. In this paper, the influence of clay mineralogy on pore structure and permeability is analyzed, and then the effective e (eeff) and effective SSA (Seff) are proposed. Based on the eeff and Seff, the permeability prediction model modified on Kozeny-Carman is built. Then, seepage experiments are conducted on two types of clay samples to test this prediction model; at the same time, the MIP combining freeze-drying methods are used to obtain the Seff and eeff. Through the discussion of the test results, three main conclusions are obtained: (1) there are invalid pores in clay due to the influence of clay mineral, this is the reason for which K-C equation is unsuitable for clay; (2) the eeff and Seff can reflect the structural state of clay during seepage; (3) the results of the permeability prediction model in this paper agree well with the test results, which indicates that this prediction model is applicable to clay. The research results of this paper are significant to solve the academic problem that K-C equation is not applicable to clay and significant to ensure the safety of building foundation pits in clay areas. With the development of all types of new special-shaped arch bridges, the deformation of the pile foundation of special-shaped steel arch bridges has a great influence on the superstructure, and the requirements for it are strict. In addition, the force of the inclined pile group under an earthquake is complicated. In this paper, based on the Zhuhai Jindao Bridge project, the finite element numerical model is established in order to study the dynamic response and parameter influence law of an inclined straight pile group foundation under earthquake action. After a thorough analysis of the results of the simulation, it was found that under the action of an earthquake, the inclination angle of inclined piles has a significant influence on the seismic ability of pile group foundations. When the inclination angle of an inclined pile is 5°, the ability of the inclined pile group foundation to resist deformation can be effectively improved, and the load distribution of the pile top is more reasonable. In view of the complexity of the pile foundation underpinning structure system and the stringent requirements of the construction process, this paper briefly describes the necessity of introducing epoxy resin reinforcing adhesive of planting rebar in the design of pile foundation underpinning beam structure to improve the mechanical properties of the reinforced beam new and old concrete joint surfaces and proposes a new type of pile foundation replacement beam system construction method by "chiseling + prestressed reinforcement + epoxy resin reinforcing adhesive". In ancient riverbed areas, the hydro-geological conditions are extremely complex because of the cutting of ancient river channels during the sedimentary process. How to lower groundwater level in water-riched gravel-confined aquifer during deep excavation is vital for underground engineering. Groundwater flow patterns had to be understood during foundation pit dewatering. This paper presents a field case study conducted at the deep foundation pit of the Qianjiang Century City station on Hangzhou Metro Line 6, which is notable for its 52 m deep unclosed waterproof curtain. A total of 34 pumping wells were installed within the pit. During the tests, one well was subjected to a pumping well, while the others served as observation wells. The research included two sets of multi-depth pumping tests, which differed in terms of their filter lengths, aimed at investigating the flow pattern around pump wells and the roots of diaphragm walls. The study found that the use of longer filters, higher pump rates, and filters placed nearer to aquifer roofs enhances dewatering efficiency and minimizes impact on the surrounding geological environment. This paper introduces a novel concept known as the diaphragm wall–pumping well effect, which regulates the water head outside the pit and the subsidence, thereby optimizing the drawdown of the deep foundation pit with an unclosed waterproof curtain. The use of data in the construction industry is growing rapidly. However, projects that do not have multiple stages, such as pile foundation and cantilever wall construction, are difficult to reinforce based on the data of observation. It cannot be said that the design–build construction process is optimized by piling data and active learning. In this paper, a new data-driven framework is proposed so that it can be used even for construction under single-stage conditions. The proposed method adopts a lower safety factor (SF) in the preliminary design than that in the conventional methods, and checks the performance after the building using piling data. Countermeasures are conducted to satisfy the target reliability, if necessary. Focusing on the expected total cost, the parametric studies reveal that the proposed method can reduce the expected total cost under specific conditions, such as lower countermeasure cost, higher failure cost, and higher relative costs of safety measures. Furthermore, our method exhibits robustness, as even with low initial safety factors, the expected total cost does not become excessively larger compared to the conventional methods. This study aims to apply performance-based safety-assessment methods to the monitoring and numerical simulation of excavation engineering projects in order to comprehensively enhance engineering risk management and decision support. In this paper, a deep excavation project in Hefei with thick silty clay layers was studied. The analysis included the surface settlement, the deformation of support structures, the vertical and horizontal displacements of pile tops, axial forces in steel braces, settlement, and the horizontal displacement of a gravity retaining wall on the south side of the excavation using field-monitoring data. A refined three-dimensional finite element model was established to further analyze the distribution of uplift displacement at the bottom of the excavation, horizontal displacement, and bending moments of piles based on simulation results. The research findings indicate that phased excavation can reduce the spatial extent of disturbance to the surrounding soil caused by excavation. Additionally, the closer the location to the excavation and the thicker the underlying silty clay layer, the faster the rate of settlement change and the greater the surface settlement. The spatial structure formed by steel braces and pile foundations effectively reduced the horizontal displacement of the engineering piles. The study's use of field monitoring and finite element simulation provided valuable insights into the deformation of support structures and the response of the surrounding soil to excavation, confirming the rationality and applicability of the support structure in this paper. The proposed method can serve as a reference for similar complex stratum excavation design and construction. The performance-based safety assessment is introduced, and the monitoring data, numerical simulation results, and performance targets are comprehensively analyzed to provide a reliable scientific basis for engineering decision making. The construction of an urban metro will inevitably involve deep excavation. Risk assessment before deep excavation, risk reduction measures, and real-time monitoring during excavation can effectively ensure the safety of deep excavation. Taking the deep excavation pit of Lingbi Road Station of Hefei Rail Transit Line 8 as the research object, this paper first analyses and evaluates the self-risk, groundwater risk, and surrounding environmental risk of the deep excavation pit, and gives the corresponding measures to reduce the risk of the deep excavation pit. Then, the monitoring content of the excavation process is determined according to the environment of the excavation, the hydrogeological conditions, and the type of supporting structure, and the monitoring scheme is designed. Finally, the entire excavation process is monitored in real time. By analyzing the monitoring data of 13 projects, such as horizontal displacement of the wall top, axial support force, groundwater level, etc., it is found that the monitoring values of 13 projects do not exceed the control value. This proves that the composite internal bracing structure of the underground diaphragm wall is suitable for deep foundation pit support in the Hefei area, as the selection of the water-bearing deep foundation pit support structure, the value of the support structure parameters, and the design of the foundation pit dewatering scheme are all reasonable.
