Background: While Tourette syndrome (TS) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occur, the nature of the relationship between their symptoms is not well understood. Network analysis of psychopathology allow for detailed examinations of symptom interactions, providing an effective approach to explore the patterns of comorbidity between TS and ADHD symptoms. Methods: This study included 3,958 participants (male/female = 3,004/954, age mean ± SD = 8.60 ± 2.25 years). We collected data on TS symptoms using the Motor Tic, Obsessions and Compulsions, Vocal Tic Evaluation Survey (MOVES), and ADHD symptoms using the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham Rating Scale-IV (SNAP-IV). Network analysis was employed to construct a combined network of TS and ADHD symptoms at the symptom level. We utilized the expected influence (EI) and bridge EI metrics to explore the core and bridge symptoms within the network. Results: The network structure demonstrated a moderate number of non-zero connections between TS and ADHD symptoms, constituting 23.06% of all potential connections. Core symptoms in the comorbidity network included "Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities," "Certain bad words or thoughts keep going through my mind," and "Words come out that I can't stop or control." Bridging symptoms identified were "Words come out that I can't stop or control," "I do certain things like jumping or clapping over and over," "I can't control all my movements," and "Often talks excessively." Conclusion: The core and bridging symptoms identified in this study serve as potential therapeutic targets for the treatment of TS and ADHD comorbidity in clinical children and adolescents. Background: In adults with Klinefelter syndrome (KS), impaired bone health with reduced bone mineral density (BMD) has been described even in the presence of testosterone replacement therapy. The aim of the present study was to characterize bone health in young patients with KS. Patients and methods: 20 participants aged 16.10 ± 4.28 years with KS (7 with testosterone replacement therapy) were included in the KliBONE study (DRKS 00024870). Medical history, clinical, radiographic and biochemical parameters of bone health and metabolism were obtained. Radiographic bone health index (BHI) was assessed via automated digital X-ray radiogrammetry of the left hand or via dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the lumbar spine and left femur in participants ≥ 16 years. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were differentiated into osteoclasts and quantified in 7 participants and 7 healthy controls. Results: Mean BHI SDS was − 1.42 ± 1.22 and mean BMD z-score at the lumbar vertebrae (L1-4) was − 0.92 ± 1.00. 25-OH-vitamin D levels < 20 ng/ml were detected in 8/20. Other parameters of bone metabolism (bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, PTH, ß-crosslaps and osteocalcin) were within age-appropriate reference ranges. Serum leptin SDS was elevated (mean 2.15 ± 1.19). The number of osteoclasts in participants with KS did not differ from that of controls. Conclusion: BHI SDS and BMD z-scores were lower than expected in young individuals with KS despite age-appropriate bone turnover markers and no apparent pathology in osteoclast differentiation. Background: The use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) for dentomaxillofacial diagnostics in pediatric dentistry is expanding and concerns have been raised about the radiation risks associated with this imaging modality, especially for children. Dentomaxillofacial paediatric imaging: an investigation towards low-dose radiation induced risks (DIMITRA) is a multidisciplinary project focused on optimizing CBCT exposure for children and adolescents. This study aims to clarify the indications behind CBCT scans in children aligned with DIMITRA's recommendations. Methods: For each CBCT examination, data were collected on patient age at the time of the CBCT examination, gender, reason for request, referring department, CBCT-requested region, and the field of view (FOV) dimension of imaging. The CBCT indications were categorized under six headings according to an adaptation of the DIMITRA project recommendations: impacted teeth, dentoalveolar trauma, orofacial clefts, dental anomalies, bone pathology, syndromes. Indications not categorized in DIMITRA were recorded below the heading "other". Results: The most common indication was the "other" category (34.8%), which included implant, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, orofacial anomalies, foreign object and root canal morphology. The least common indication was "orofacial cleft" (1.9%) and no requests were made for cases related to syndromes. Detection of supernumerary tooth in dental anomalies (68.6%) was the most common CBCT indication, while dentigerous cysts (37.6%) were among the most common CBCT indication in bone pathologies and orofacial anomalies (68.1%) in the other category. The most common size was External Center (15 × 15 cm) (27%) and the least common size was Both Arches/small (8 × 8 cm) (0.4%) when the CBCT FOV was analysed. Conclusions: Although the option of a smaller FOV size was available, the larger FOV size that included the both jaws were most frequently used. Background: The PedsQL™ 4.0 Generic Core Scales (GSC) have been translated into over 60 languages, but use in the sub-Saharan African region is limited. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt and validate the PedsQL™ 4.0 GCS child self-report and teen self-report versions into the Chichewa language for Malawi. Methods: The English (USA) versions were adapted (translation, back translation and cognitive interviews to evaluate conceptual equivalence) into Chichewa. We recruited 289 children (8–17 years) in Blantyre, Malawi. Classical psychometrics at the item level (missing data, endorsement frequencies, item redundancy) and scale level (internal consistency, convergent, discriminant and known groups validity) was used to evaluate the new Chichewa versions. Results: Six items were found to need cultural adaptation for Malawi. There were problems with missing data (< 5%) and adjacent endorsement frequency (< 10%) among younger children. Internal consistency reliability was acceptable (Cronbach α > 0.7). Convergent validity was generally strong (correlations > 0.4). Discriminant validity (p > 0.05) was evident with respect to gender and age, but not for school grade (p < 0.05). Effect sizes indicating known groups validity were in the expected direction but of variable magnitude. Conclusion: We have successfully adapted the PedsQL™ 4.0 GCS child self-report and teen self-report into Chichewa for use in Malawi. Many aspects of the psychometric evaluation were promising, though some elements were more mixed and we have not yet been able to evaluate test-retest reliability or responsiveness. Background: Youth mental health is a growing concern in research, practice, and policy. Practice standards, guidelines, or strategies provide an invisible infrastructure that fosters equity, quality, and safety, potentially addressing inconsistencies and more effectively attending to the mental wellness of Black youth as a particular population of concern. This scoping review aimed to address the following question: What standards exist for the delivery of mental health services to Black youth in community, primary care, and educational settings? Due to a limited initial search yield on publications about standards for the delivery of mental health services for Black youth population, our goal was then to identify and map mental health standards, recommendations, or guidelines for the delivery of mental health services using the same settings to all youth. Methods: Searches were conducted in various databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, SocINDEX, CINAHL, Gender Studies Database, Social Services Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Screening was independently conducted by two reviewers, with disagreements resolved by a third. Information extraction was performed by two independent reviewers. Results: Out of the 2,701 screened publications, 54 were included in this scoping review. Among them, 38.9% were published between 2020 and 2023, with 40.7% originating from the United States of America, 20.4% from the United Kingdom, and 13% from Canada. Concerning the settings, 25.9% of the publications focused on primary care, 24.1% on health care services, 20.4% on educational settings, and 3.7% on the community. Additionally, 25.9% were classified as general because recommendations were applicable to various settings. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (11.1%) was the most frequently considered specific condition, followed by autism spectrum disorder (9.3%) and depression (9.3%). However, 31.5% of the included references addressed mental health in general. Only three references provided specific recommendations for the Black population. Conclusions: Recommendations, guidelines, or standards for Black youth mental health services in community, primary care, or educational settings are scarce and limited to North American countries. This scoping review emphasizes the need to consider ethnicity when developing guidelines or standards to improve racial equity and reduce disparities in access to mental health services. Objective: There are very few reports on the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in children and youth with type-1 diabetes (T1D). Studies have also found very low rates of referral for DR screening in children and youth with T1D. We conducted this study to determine the prevalence of DR, to study the reliability of ISPAD screening recommendations and to identify predictors of DR, its progression and regression in Indian children and youth with T1D. Methods: This study included 882 children and youth with T1D. Demographic data, anthropometry, blood pressure, sexual maturity rating, ophthalmological examination (slit lamp for cataract) and biochemical measurements were performed using standard protocols. Fundus images were captured using the Forus Health 3netra classic digital non-mydriatic fundus camera by the same experienced operator. De-identified images were assessed by a senior grader and ophthalmologist (Belfast Ophthalmic Reading Center). Severity of DR was graded as per the UK National Health Service (NHS) DR classification scale. Result: We report 6.4% and 0.2% prevalence of DR and cataract in Indian children and youth with T1D, respectively. All the subjects with DR had early non-proliferative DR. We report that amongst subjects with DR, only 2 subjects were aged less than 11 years and had duration of illness less than 2 years. Presence of hypertension and older age were significant predictors of DR (P <.05). Subjects with DR had significantly higher triglyceride concentrations (P <.05), of these, 6.9% had progression and 2.9% had regression at 1 year follow up; the change in glycaemic control was a significant positive predictor of progression of DR (P <.05). None of the participants included in the study progressed to develop sight-threatening DR. Conclusion: DR is not uncommon in Indian children and youth with T1D, thus screening for DR needs to be initiated early, particularly in older individuals with higher disease duration. Controlling blood pressure and triglyceride concentrations may prevent occurrence of DR. Improving glycaemic control may prevent progression of DR in Indian children and youth with T1D. Background: This study aims to evaluate the performance of a deep learning system for the evaluation of tooth development stages on images obtained from panoramic radiographs from child patients. Methods: The study collected a total of 1500 images obtained from panoramic radiographs from child patients between the ages of 5 and 14 years. YOLOv5, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based object detection model, was used to automatically detect the calcification states of teeth. Images obtained from panoramic radiographs from child patients were trained and tested in the YOLOv5 algorithm. True-positive (TP), false-positive (FP), and false-negative (FN) ratios were calculated. A confusion matrix was used to evaluate the performance of the model. Results: Among the 146 test group images with 1022 labels, there were 828 TPs, 308 FPs, and 1 FN. The sensitivity, precision, and F1-score values of the detection model of the tooth stage development model were 0.99, 0.72, and 0.84, respectively. Conclusions: In conclusion, utilizing a deep learning-based approach for the detection of dental development on pediatric panoramic radiographs may facilitate a precise evaluation of the chronological correlation between tooth development stages and age. Objective: Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is the most common pediatric endocrine cancer but studies are scarce. Latest recommendations advocate for an individualized risk-based approach to select patients for additional therapy. Lymphovascular invasion is not considered, despite being a well-known risk factor in the adult population. The aim of this study was to describe the outcomes of a cohort of DTC patients diagnosed at pediatric age and to evaluate the impact of lymphovascular invasion on the risk of persistence/ recurrence. Methods: A retrospective study of patients diagnosed with DTC at pediatric age from 2010 to 2022 at a single center was performed. All patients had total thyroidectomy. Radioactive iodine therapy (RAI) was used in selected patients. The response to therapy and occurrence of persistent/recurrent disease were evaluated. Results: A total of 21 DTC were diagnosed, mostly papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) (81.0%, n=17). Six patients (28.6%) had nodal involvement and one (4.8%) had lung metastasis at the time of the diagnosis. Lymphovascular invasion was present in 11 patients (52.4%). After surgery, 13 patients (61.9%) underwent RAI. The mean follow-up time was 5.7±3.1 years. In total, 6 patients (31.6%) experienced persistent/recurrent disease during the follow-up time. Among PTC patients, persistent/recurrent disease was more frequent in the presence of lymphovascular invasion [55.6% (5/9) vs. 0.0% (0/6), p=0.031]. Conclusion: An individualized risk-based approach is recommended. Our study suggests that lymphovascular invasion may be associated with a higher risk of persistence/recurrence and should therefore be considered for decision making in children and adolescents with PTC. Objective: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is defined as chronic hepatic steatosis and is becoming prevalent, along with the increasing trend for obesity in children and adolescents. A non-invasive and reliable tool is needed to differentiate non-alcoholic steatohepatitis from simple steatosis. This study evaluated the association between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and the ultrasonographic fatty liver indicator (US-FLI), and the possibility of using the TyG index for prediction of severity of pediatric NAFLD. Methods: One hundred and twenty one patients who were diagnosed with NAFLD by ultrasonography were included. They were categorized into three groups according to body mass index (BMI). Ninety-two were obese, and 19 and 10 were overweight and normal weight, respectively. Results: The homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was highest in the group with obesity (p=0.044). The TyG index and US-FLI did not differ significantly among the three BMI groups (p=0.186). Fourteen (11.6%) of the 121 patients had US-FLI ≥6, in whom the BMI-SDS and TyG index were higher (p=0.017, p=0.004), whereas HOMA-IR did not differ significantly from the group with US-FLI <6 (p=0.366). US-FLI was associated with BMI-SDS and the TyG index. TyG index was significantly associated with US-FLI after adjustment for BMI-SDS. The cut-off value for the TyG index for predicting US-FLI ≥6 was 8.91, with an area under the curve of 0.785. Conclusion: TyG index was associated with the degree of hepatic steatosis, suggesting that it might be a useful tool for predicting the severity of pediatric NAFLD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Craniopharyngiomas (CPG) have complex treatment challenges due to their proximity to vital structures, surgical and radiotherapeutic complexities, and the tendency for recurrence. The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence of endocrine and metabolic comorbidities observed during initial diagnosis and long-term follow-up in a nationwide cohort of pediatric CPG patients. A further aim was to highlight the difficulties associated with CPG management. Methods: Sixteen centers entered CPG patients into the ÇEDD NET data system. The clinical and laboratory characteristics at presentation, administered treatments, accompanying endocrine, metabolic, and other system involvements, and the patient's follow-up features were evaluated. Results: Of the 152 evaluated patients, 64 (42.1%) were female. At presentation, the mean age was 9.1±3.67, ranging from 1.46 to 16.92, years. The most common complaints at presentation were headache (68.4%), vision problems (42%), short stature (15%), and nausea and vomiting (7%). The surgical procedures were gross total resection (GTR) in 97 (63.8%) and subtotal resection in 55 (36.2%). Radiotherapy (RT) was initiated in 11.8% of the patients. Histopathological examination reported 92% were adamantinamatous type and 8% were papillary type. Postoperatively, hormone abnormalities consisted of thyroid-stimulating hormone (92.1%), adrenocorticotropic hormone (81%), antidiuretic hormone (79%), growth hormone (65.1%), and gonadotropin (43.4%) deficiencies. Recombinant growth hormone treatment (rhGH) was initiated in 27 (17.8%). The study showed hesitancy among physicians regarding rhGH. The median survival without relapse was 2.2 years. Median (range) time of relapse was 1.82 (0.13-10.35) years. Relapse was related to longer followups and reduced GTR rates. The median follow-up time was 3.13 years. Among the last follow-up visits, the prevalence of obesity was 38%, but of these, 46.5% were already obese at diagnosis. However, 20% who were not obese at baseline became obese on follow-up. Permanent visual impairment was observed in 26 (17.1%), neurological deficits in 13 (8.5%) and diabetes mellitus in 5 (3.3%) patients. Conclusion: Recurrence was predominantly due to incomplete resection and the low rate of postoperative RT. Challenges emerged for multidisciplinary regular follow ups. Objective: To analyze the characteristics of deliberate drug ingestion in adolescents and its related influencing factors. Method: This was a retrospective study. A total of 158 cases of deliberate drug ingestion as observation group and 160 cases of other diseases in adolescents as control group were treated in the Emergency Department of Baoding Hospital of Beijing Children’s Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University from January 2020 to December 2022. The clinical characteristics of adolescents who engaged in deliberate drug ingestion were analyzed, and various factors that could potentially influence deliberate drug ingestion in adolescents were subjected to both univariate and multivariate analysis. Result: There was a progressive increase in the number of patients presenting with mental health issues year by year. Univariate analysis showed that family type, guardian’s education level, place of residence, whether they were only children, parents’ knowledge of medication, awareness of medication safety, depression/anxiety, negative life events, and social support were risk factors for deliberate drug ingestion in adolescents (all p<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that family type, parents’ knowledge of medication, awareness of medication safety, whether they were depressed/anxious, negative life events, and social support were independent risk factors for deliberate drug ingestion in adolescents (p<0.05). Conclusion: The incidence of deliberate drug ingestion in adolescents is increasing year by year, and their behavior is influenced by multiple factors. Background: The distal end radius's bony anatomy in relation to three variables—Radial Inclination, Volar tilt, and radial height—has been discussed commonly in the adult population and is not very well defined in the growing skeleton. In children aged 8–16 years old, we measured the osseous distal end radius according to radiography standards. The research comprised 130 patients, 65 males and 65 females aged 8–16. In each child, the norms for radial inclination, volar tilt, and radial epiphyseal height were established. This research defines these radiographic parameters for the paediatric population in India for the first time. Methods: This research is an Unicentric Cross-sectional observational analytical study. We studied 130 normal wrist posteroanterior and lateral radiographs of the Indian paediatric population aged 8–16 years who reported to our OPD and calculated the three parameters—(1) Radial height, (2) Volar Tilt, and (3) Radial Inclination. Mean measurement values were analysed statistically. Results: The Mean distal end radius volar tilt is 10.92° ± 1.76° SD with a range from 4° to 15°. The Mean distal end radial inclination is 21.04° ± 2.10° SD with a range from 15° to 25°. The Mean distal end radial height is 11.93 ± 1.44 mm SD with a range from 9.0 to 14.50 mm. Conclusion: In true Postero-anterior and lateral wrist radiographs of the Indian paediatric population, we have established normal values that may be utilized as a guide for the evaluation and treatment of a variety of traumatic and non-traumatic problems in Indian children. Background: Societal changes have led to greater isolation and higher levels of loneliness particularly for older generations. Loneliness is a significant public health challenge leading to increased levels of poor mental health. Depression and anxiety are also increasing in prevalence amongst children and young people. Intergenerational activities are interventions designed to bring together older and younger generations with the purpose of allowing participants to utilise their experiences and skills, and to give participants a chance to experience the pleasure and excitement that occurs with the transmission of knowledge and skills from one generation to another. Intergenerational activities are therefore potential interventions that can address the growing problems associated with loneliness and lack of wellbeing. Objectives: This systematic review aims to examine the impact of intergenerational interventions on the wellbeing and mental health in children and adolescents, and potential harmful effects. It also aims to identify areas for future research as well as key messages for service commissioners. Search Methods: We searched an evidence and gap map published in 2022 (comprehensive searches conducted July 2021 and updated June 2023) to identify randomised controlled trials of intergenerational interventions that report mental health and wellbeing outcomes for children and young people. Selection Criteria: Randomised controlled trials of intergenerational interventions that involved unrelated younger and older people with at least one skipped generation between them and reported mental health or wellbeing outcomes for children and young people were included in this review. Data Collection and Analysis: We used standard methodological procedures expected by The Campbell Collaboration. We conducted data extraction and Cochrane risk of bias assessments in EPPI reviewer. Main Results: While we identified 500 evaluations of intergenerational interventions, where the impact on participating children and/or young people was evaluated this was most often limited to assessing their impact on attitudes to aging. We identified five studies evaluating five different types of intergenerational interventions which included one‐off sessions to ones that spanned a year measuring their impact on the mental health and wellbeing of children and/or young people. The purposes of the interventions differed, which included promoting social skills, preventing harmful behaviour and promoting learning. The ages of children also varied across the five studies, with one targeting younger children, two targeting younger teenagers and two targeting older teenagers. One study included socioeconomically disadvantaged children, and in the other studies the socioeconomic backgrounds of the children and young people were not described. The outcome measures used to evaluate the interventions varied with none of the studies measuring the same outcomes. One study showed improvements in wellbeing measures, and this was an intervention delivered to children in deprived neighbourhoods, where the intervention duration was for a year allowing the development of a greater depth of relationship between the younger and older participants. Four studies found no....... The included studies were at high risk of bias therefore raising uncertainty in the reliability of the findings. Underpinning theories that supported the development of the interventions and explained the mechanisms of effect were poorly described. Authors' Conclusions: The evidence for the effectiveness of intergenerational interventions on the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people is limited and inconclusive. Few evaluations have sought to measure how intergenerational interventions impact children and young people and where this impact is measured the focus is usually limited to attitudes to aging. The evidence that has been collected is too heterogenous to allow synthesis of the findings. The underpinning theories to support their development are poorly described with no follow‐up data to ascertain if benefits are maintained. Intergenerational interventions show promise but researchers have failed to measure how they impact on the mental health and wellbeing of children and young people. Introduction: People living with HIV (PLHIV) have a 20-fold risk of tuberculosis (TB) disease compared to HIV-negative people. In 2021, the uptake of TB preventive treatment among the children and adolescents living with HIV at the Baylor-Uganda HIV clinic was 45%, which was below the national target of 90%. Minimal evidence documents the enablers and barriers to TB preventive treatment (TPT) initiation and completion among children and adolescents living with HIV(CALHIV). We explored the facilitators and barriers to TPT initiation and completion among CALHIV among adolescents aged 10-19years and caretakers of children below 18years. Methods: We conducted a qualitative study from February 2022 to March 2023, at three paediatric and adolescent HIV treatment centers in Uganda. In-depth interviews were conducted at TPT initiation and after completion for purposively selected health workers, adolescents aged 10–19 years living with HIV, and caretakers of children aged below 18years. Results: The desire to avoid TB disease, previous TB treatment, encouragement from family members, and ministry of health policies emerged as key facilitators for the children and adolescents to initiate TPT. Barriers to TPT initiation included; TB and HIV-related stigma, busy carer and adolescent work schedules, reduced social support from parents and family, history of drug side effects, high pill burden and fatigue, and perception of not being ill. TPT completion was enabled by combined TPT and ART refill visits, delivery of ART and TPT within the community, and continuous education and counseling from health workers. Reported barriers to TPT completion included TB and HIV-related stigma, long waiting time. Non-disclosure of HIV status by caretakers to CALHIV and fear of side effects was cited by health workers as a barrier to starting TPT. Facilitators of TPT initiation and completion reported by healthcare workers included patient and caretaker health education, counselling about benefits of TPT and risk of TB disease, having same appointment for TPT and ART refill to reduce patient waiting time, adolescent-friendly services, and appointment reminder phone calls. Conclusion: The facilitators and barriers of TPT initiation and completion among CALHIV span from individual, to health system and structural factors. Background: It is still unclear whether the trabecular structure of the jaw is different in individuals with hypodontia than in those without hypodontia; this is important for clinicians. The aim was to determine whether the mandibular trabecular bone structure of children and adolescents with hypodontia differs from the control group by using the fractal analysis (FA) method in this study. Methods: A total of 138 panoramic radiographs of 69 cases and 69 control subjects (mean age 13.2 ± 10.1) were evaluated. The age and gender of subjects in the case and control groups were matched. Three regions of interest (ROIs) were selected from the panoramic radiographs. ROI1 refers to the center of the ramus rising above the mandibular foramen. ROI2 refers to the area between the apical level of the mandibular molar and the upper border of the mandibular canal. ROI3, the missing tooth region, refers to the apical third of the mesial side of the erupting or fully erupted permanent mandibular first molar. Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon tests were used. p < 0.05 was accepted for the significance value. Results: The mean fractal dimension (FD) values of ROI1, ROI2, and ROI3 were 1,25, 1,20, and 1,13, respectively. The means FD values obtained from the ramus region were higher than the other regions (p < 0.05). The FD values did not differ significantly according to gender and age (p > 0.05). The FD values of the case group were lower than the control group for ROI3 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the mandibular trabecular bone quality of pediatric patients with one missing tooth was different from the healthy group. The difference in the mean FD values from the ROIs indicates that the ramus has a denser structure than the mandibular corpus. Background: A global schools-based programme within the Global Campaign against Headache is estimating the burden of headache in children (6–11 years) and adolescents (12–17 years), cluster-sampling the world by conducting national studies in all world regions. Its purpose is to complement population-based studies in adults, adding to knowledge of the burden of headache and informing educational and health policies. This study in Benin was the third in the programme from sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Methods: We followed the generic protocol for the global study. In a cross-sectional survey, the child and adolescent versions of the Headache-Attributed Restriction, Disability, Social Handicap and Impaired Participation (HARDSHIP) structured questionnaire were administered to pupils within their classes in 16 schools selected from across the country to be representative of its diversities. Headache diagnostic questions were based on ICHD-3 criteria but for the inclusion of undifferentiated headache (UdH). Results: Very large proportions of pupils were absent on the survey days. The sampled population defined by class registers totalled 11,802 pupils, of whom only 2,488 were present. A further 193 pupils (or their parents) declined the survey. The surveyed sampled (N = 2,295; males 1,156 [50.4%], females 1,139 [49.6%]) included 1,081 children (47.1%) and 1,214 adolescents (52.9%), with a non-participating proportion (193/2,488) of 7.8%. Headache ever was reported by 97.3% of the sample. Age- and gender-adjusted 1-year prevalences, according to responses given, were 53.4% for migraine (almost three quarters of this being probable migraine), 21.3% for tension-type headache, 8.2% for UdH, 1.0% for probable medication-overuse headache (pMOH) and 2.6% for other headache on ≥ 15 days/month (H15+). Both pMOH and other H15 + were substantially more prevalent among adolescents. Conclusion: The finding for migraine is anomalous, but, within this series of studies, the same was found in Zambia and similar in Ethiopia, both in SSA. While many cases identified as probable migraine, especially among children, might better have been diagnosed as UdH, the true prevalence of migraine almost certainly exceeds 21%. Background: Physical, affective and behavioural symptoms associated with the menstrual cycle are commonplace. Adolescents with problematic symptoms have reported a negative impact on school attendance, behaviour and participation in physical activity. In the United Kingdom, evidence suggests that menstrual health education delivered by teachers focusses on menstrual cycle biology as opposed to management of menstruation and menstrual cycle related symptoms. Through obtaining the pupil voice, this study aimed to understand young people's perceptions and experiences of menstrual education in schools and their experiences of menstruating whilst at school, including within Physical Education. Methods: To address the aims, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Nine focus groups with female pupils (n = 48; ages 10–15 years) were completed across six school locations in England and Wales, including primary and secondary schools. A range of elements relating to the menstrual cycle, education at school and PE were discussed by pupils. Results: Four main themes were developed (a) Education preferences, (b) Period positive environments, (c) Personal experiences and (d) Impact on school. Similarities were reflected across focus groups in terms of current (lacking) education, lesson style and preferences, comfort of conversations, lack of school support and impact on school and PE. Conclusion: The findings highlight the lack of menstrual education received and subsequent impact of menstruation and menstrual-related symptoms in school and PE. The abundance of information requested by pupils highlights the deficit in understanding about how to manage periods in school and remain engaged in physical activity. Schools can utilise information from the current study to; create period positive environments; consider lesson content and format; and explore how to support girls to stay physically active in PE. This study presents a comprehensive analysis of global, regional, and national trends in the burden of hearing loss (HL) among children and adolescents from 1990 to 2019, using data from the Global Burden of Disease study. Over this period, there was a general decline in HL prevalence and years lived with disability (YLDs) globally, with average annual percentage changes (AAPCs) of −0.03% (95% uncertainty interval [UI], −0.04% to −0.01%; p = 0.001) and −0.23% (95% UI, −0.25% to −0.20%; p < 0.001). Males exhibited higher rates of HL prevalence and YLDs than females. Mild and moderate HL were the most common categories across all age groups, but the highest proportion of YLDs was associated with profound HL [22.23% (95% UI, 8.63%−57.53%)]. Among females aged 15−19 years, the prevalence and YLD rates for moderate HL rose, with AAPCs of 0.14% (95% UI, 0.06%−0.22%; p = 0.001) and 0.13% (95% UI, 0.08%−0.18%; p < 0.001). This increase is primarily attributed to age-related and other HL (such as environmental, lifestyle factors, and occupational noise exposure) and otitis media, highlighting the need for targeted research and interventions for this demographic. Southeast Asia and Western Sub-Saharan Africa bore the heaviest HL burden, while High-income North America showed lower HL prevalence and YLD rates but a slight increasing trend in recent years, with AAPCs of 0.13% (95% UI, 0.1%−0.16%; p < 0.001) and 0.08% (95% UI, 0.04% to 0.12%; p < 0.001). Additionally, the analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between sociodemographic index (SDI) and both HL prevalence (r = −0.74; p < 0.001) and YLD (r = −0.76; p < 0.001) rates. However, the changes in HL trends were not significantly correlated with SDI, suggesting that factors beyond economic development, such as policies and cultural practices, also affect HL. Despite the overall optimistic trend, this study emphasizes the continued need to focus on specific high-risk groups and regions to further reduce the HL burden and enhance the quality of life for affected children and adolescents. Introduction/Objectives: Exposure to adverse social determinants of health (SDoH) in childhood is associated with poorer long-term health outcomes. Within structurally marginalized populations, there are disproportionately high rates of developmentally vulnerable children. The RICHER (Responsive, Intersectoral, Child and Community Health, Education and Research) social pediatric model was designed to increase access to care in marginalized neighborhoods. The purpose of this study was to describe the children and youth engaged with the RICHER model of service and characterize the needs of the population. Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on children and youth who accessed primary care services through the program between January 1, 2018 and April 30, 2021. Basic descriptive data analysis was done using Stata v15.1. Results: A total of 210 charts were reviewed. The mean age in years at initial assessment was 6.32. Patients most commonly identified their race/ethnicity as Indigenous (33%) and 15% were recent newcomers to Canada. Evidence of at least 1 adverse SDoH was noted in 41% of charts; the most common included material poverty (34%), food insecurity (11%), and child welfare involvement (20%). The median number of diagnoses per patient was 4. The most frequently documented diagnoses were neurodevelopmental disorders (50%) including developmental delay (39%), ADHD (32%), and learning disability (26%). The program referred 72% of patients to general pediatricians and/or other subspecialists; 34% were referred for tertiary neuropsychological assessments and 35% for mental health services. Conclusions: Our data suggests that this low-barrier, place-based primary care RICHER model was able to reach a medically, developmentally, and socially complex population living in disenfranchised urban neighborhoods. Half of the patients identified in our review had neurodevelopmental concerns and a third had mental health concerns, in contrast to an estimated 17% prevalence for mental health, behavioral, or developmental disorders in North American general pediatric aged populations. This highlights the impact adverse SDoH can have on child health and the importance of working with community partners to identify developmentally vulnerable children and support place-based programs in connecting with children who may be missed, overlooked, or disadvantaged through traditional models of care. To reduce coercion in acute inpatient child and adolescent psychiatric units, a better understanding of individuals at risk for seclusion and/or restraint (S/R) is needed. We report data on the proportion of patients secluded/restrained and factors associated with higher risk of S/R. Identifying preventative mechanisms through risk stratification upon inpatient admission can aid the training of mental health professionals, and support shaping specific workflows for at-risk populations for example by joint crisis plans or post-coercion review sessions. Methods: A case-control study included all admissions (n = 782) to a department of child and adolescent psychiatry within 36 months between 2019 and 2022. Data on age, sex, out of home care, primary and comorbid ICD-10 diagnoses, length of stay, prior/multiple admissions were compared between admissions with and without S/R using chi square tests for categorical and t-tests for continuous variables. Uni- and multivariate binary logistic regression models were computed. Results: The overall proportion of S/R was 12.8% (n = 100). Females (p = 0.001), patients in out of home care (p < 0.001), with prior admission (p < 0.001), Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD; p < 0.001) and Borderline personality disorder (BPD; p < 0.001) were at a significantly higher risk of S/R. Length of stay in days (OR 1.01), out of home care (OR 3.85), PTSD (OR 6.20), BPD (OR 15.17), Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)/conduct disorder (OR 4.29), and manic episode/bipolar disorder (OR 36.41) were significantly associated with S/R in multivariate regression. Conclusions: Child and adolescent psychiatric staff should consider risk factors when using coercive measures. Patients with PTSD and/or BPD are the most vulnerable subgroups. Idiopathic anaphylaxis (IA) remains a frustrating challenge for both patients and physicians. The aim of this paper is to focus on IA in pediatric ages and suggest possible diagnostic algorithms according to specific age ranges (infants, children, and adolescents). In fact, in a variable percentage of patients, despite extensive diagnostic tests, the cause of anaphylactic episodes cannot be identified. Moreover, the lack of a unanimous IA definition requires a careful and detailed diagnostic workup. Prompt recognition of signs and symptoms, especially in younger children, and an accurate clinical history often allow a choice of the most appropriate diagnostic tests and a correct differential diagnosis. Objective: This study aims to investigate the anatomical structure of the C6 pedicle and lateral mass in children aged 0–14 years using CT imaging, providing detailed insights into their growth and development. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive measurement of C6. Measurements included width, length, and height of the pedicles, as well as the length, width, and thickness of the lateral masses, and several angular metrics. Regression analysis was performed to understand the growth trends, and statistical analyses were carried out to identify differences between age groups, genders, and sides. Results: In children younger than four years, the pedicle width exceeds its height, influencing the diameter of the pedicle screws. By age two to three, the pedicle height and lateral mass thickness reaches 3.0 mm, allowing for the use of 3.0 mm diameter screws. The pedicle transverse angle remains stable. Most parameters showed no significant differences between the left and right sides. Size parameters exhibited significant larger in males than females at ages 0–1, 3–7, and 10–12 years. Regression analysis revealed that the growth trends of size parameters follow cubic or polynomial curves. Most angular metrics follow cubic fitting curves without a clear trend of change with age. Conclusion: This study provides a detailed analysis of the anatomical development of the C6 pedicle and lateral masses in children, offering valuable insights for pediatric cervical spine surgeries. The findings highlight the importance of considering age-specific anatomical variations when planning posterior surgical fixation, specifically at C6. Background: The pervasiveness of the Internet in everyday life, especially among young people, has raised concerns about its effects on mental health, education, and, recently, oral health. Previous research has suggested a complex relationship between Problematic Internet Use (PIU), lifestyles, and oral health-related quality of life, highlighting the need to examine these interactions further. This study seeks to explore the PIU as a predictor of oral health-related quality of life and examine the mediating role of lifestyles between both in a sample of Peruvian schoolchildren. Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 293 Peruvian students aged 12 to 17 years (M = 14.42, SD = 1.5), using structural equations to analyze the relationship between PIU, lifestyles, and quality of life related to oral health. The data collection procedure was through a face-to-face survey. Validated instruments measured PIU, lifestyles, and oral health-related quality of life. The study's theoretical model was analyzed through structural equation modeling with the MLR estimator. The fit assessment was performed using the comparative fit index (CFI), root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), and standardized root mean square residual (SRMR). Results: They indicated significant correlations between PIU, lifestyles, and oral health-related quality of life. A negative influence of PIU on lifestyles (β = -0.30, p <.001) and on oral health-related quality of life (β = -0.35, p <.001) was observed, as well as a positive relationship between PIU and oral health-related quality of life (β = 0.29, p <.001). The mediation of lifestyles was statistically significant, suggesting that they mediate the relationship between PIU and oral health-related quality of life. Conclusions: The study confirms that PIU can negatively affect adolescents' oral health-related quality of life, mediated by unhealthy lifestyles. Background: Among elementary-aged children (5-12yrs), summer vacation is associated with accelerated gains in Body Mass Index (BMI). A key behavioral driver of BMI gain is a lack of physical activity (PA). Previous studies indicate PA decreases during summer, compared to the school year but whether this difference is consistent among boys and girls, across age, and by income status remains unclear. This study examined differences in school and summer movement behaviors in a diverse cohort of children across three years. Methods: Children (N = 1,203, age range 5–14 years, 48% girls) wore wrist-placed accelerometers for a 14-day wear-period during school (April/May) and summer (July) in 2021 to 2023, for a total of 6 timepoints. Mixed-effects models examined changes in school vs. summer movement behaviors (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity [MVPA], sedentary) for boys and girls, separately, and by age and household income groups (low, middle, and upper based on income-to-poverty ratio). Results: Children provided a total of 35,435 valid days of accelerometry. Overall, boys (+ 9.1 min/day, 95CI 8.1 to 10.2) and girls (+ 6.2 min/day, 95CI 5.4 to 7.0) accumulated more MVPA during school compared to summer. Boys accumulated less time sedentary (-9.9 min/day, 95CI -13.0 to -6.9) during school, while there was no difference in sedentary time (-2.7 min/day, 95CI -5.7 to 0.4) for girls. Different patterns emerged across ages and income groups. Accumulation of MVPA was consistently greater during school compared to summer across ages and income groups. Generally, the difference between school and summer widened with increasing age, except for girls from middle-income households. Accumulation of sedentary time was higher during school for younger children (5-9yrs), whereas for older children (10-14yrs), sedentary time was greater during summer for the middle- and upper-income groups. For boys from low-income households and girls from middle-income households, sedentary time was consistently greater during summer compared to school across ages. Conclusions: Children are less active and more sedentary during summer compared to school, which may contribute to accelerated BMI gain. However, this differs by biological sex, age, and income. Background: Oral aripiprazole exhibits favorable clinical efficacy and safety in the suppression of tics in children and adolescents with tic disorders. This study aims to evaluate and compare the cost-effectiveness of high-dose and low-dose aripiprazole in children and adolescents with tic disorders from the perspective of the Chinese healthcare system. Methods: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 146 patients with tic disorders, of whom 144 completed EQ-5D-Y and YGTSS. Four models were built to convert YGTSS onto EQ-5D-Y utility using two mapping algorithms. We constructed a decision tree model containing efficacy and safety to compare the cost-effectiveness of high-dose and low-dose aripiprazole based on our mapping function. Results: The GLM with model 1 (YGTSS total tic scores) was selected as the preferred function in our decision tree model. The base case cost-effectiveness analysis showed that compared to low-dose aripiprazole, high-dose aripiprazole improves effectiveness by 0.001QALYs and increases the overall cost by $197.99, resulting in an ICER of $174339.22 per QALY, which exceeds three times the gross domestic product per capita. Hence, high-dose aripiprazole is not likely to be a cost-effective option for child patients with tic disorders. One-way sensitivity analysis and probabilistic sensitivity analysis showed that these results is robust. Conclusion: On the basis of currently available data, low-dose aripiprazole may be a safe, effective, and economical dosage for children and adolescents with tic disorders. Limitations: The main limitation of our study is the lack of utility directly used for cost-effectiveness analysis. We obtained the utility of patients with tic disorders indirectly by the mapping function. This may introduce some bias and uncertainty. And it is a limitation to use the direct medical costs of Germany in our model. Children's mental health symptoms' development can be characterized by both continuity and discontinuity. However, existing studies ignore the potential discontinuity in children's internalizing symptoms' development. Hence, the current study examines continuous and discontinuous developmental trajectories using representative data from a sample of 2792 children (49.10% females) from the Growing Up in Australia cohort assessed seven times (ages 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16). Longitudinal measurement invariance analyses revealed that internalizing symptoms were comparable over time. Linear, quadratic, and piecewise latent growth curve models were deployed to estimate the trajectory of internalizing symptoms from early childhood to late adolescence. The analyses showed that internalizing symptoms were characterized by a quadratic-quadratic piecewise growth curve comprising two distinct phases of upward concave growth. Internalizing scores reduced steadily between ages 4 and 8 years but exhibited a slight upward curvature between ages 8 and 10 years. By age 14 years, the trajectory remained relatively stable but spiked between age 14 and 16 years. The two phases of internalizing symptoms' development were largely unrelated. Overall, the study adds to the knowledge about the development of internalizing mental health from early childhood to late adolescence and highlights the need for additional support in late adolescence. The implementation of human research involving children and adolescents necessitates a nuanced understanding of the distinct ethical complexities and sensitivities that arise. This study aimed to conduct a comprehensive review of ethical guidelines for research with these populations by extensively examining existing standards and applied studies. The review revealed a myriad of challenges inherent in the involvement of children and adolescents as research subjects. The most important ethical challenges relate to the principles of bioethics and their compliance with human studies involving children/adolescents, informed consent, and risk assessment in studies on children/adolescents. To facilitate appropriate participation of youth in research endeavors, meticulous planning is required, in conjunction with a re-examination of the definitions of ethical principles in pediatric research, close monitoring of potential risks and benefits, and the utilization of a combination of innovative and traditional approaches to obtain informed consent that adheres to ethical standards. Performing research with children and adolescents requires special considerations to address the unique ethical issues that can emerge. By adhering to ethical guidelines tailored specifically to these vulnerable populations, researchers can help ensure that studies are conducted in an appropriate and responsible manner. Background: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES), poverty rate, and the prevalence of overweight/obesity or obesity in children and adolescents aged 2–14. Methods: Parents or guardians reported the weight and height of participants, used to calculate body mass index (BMI) and BMI z-scores according to the International Obesity Task Force standards. Participants were categorized into "overweight/obesity" and "no overweight/obesity" and further into "obesity" and "no obesity". The rate of poverty rate was determined using data from the National Statistics Institute of Spain, defining it as the percentage of people with income below 60% of the national median. SES was based on the head of household's occupation and categorized into low, medium, and high levels. Results: Adjusted multilevel models showed participants with medium or high SES had lower odds of overweight/obesity compared to those with low SES (medium SES: odds ratio [OR]: 0.63, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.54–0.73; high SES: OR: 0.59, 95% CI: 0.49–0.70). Participants in the high-poverty group had higher odds of having overweight/obesity (OR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.13–1.74) compared to the low-poverty group. Conclusions: The study highlights significant socioeconomic disparities in childhood overweight/obesity, emphasizing the potential impact of SES and poverty on health outcomes in Spanish children and adolescents. (1) Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the studies that evaluate the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality (VR) as a distraction technique for pain and anxiety associated with medical procedures in children and adolescents. (2) The methods involved a systematic review of randomized controlled trials retrieved from databases in health sciences (Pubmed, CINHAL, Scopus, WOS, ProQuest, Cuiden Plus, InDICEs-CSIC). PRISMA guidelines were followed. (3) Results: Twelve trials were included. Four involved venipuncture, four involved surgical procedures, one involved vaccination, one involved burn care, one involved secondary wound closure, and the last one involved subcutaneous port access. (4) Discussion: Children who undergo medical procedures often experience pain and anxiety, which affects their physical condition and their relationships with caregivers and health professionals. Immersive VR is an effective alternative to medications to help in these cases. No author found statistically significant differences against the use of VR for distraction and palliation of pain and anxiety, which seems to be more effective at a younger age. It is important to personalize the immersive VR experience and equipment. (1) Background: Data on persisting symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents are conflicting. Due to the absence of a clear pathophysiological correlate and a definitive diagnostic test, the diagnosis of Long COVID currently rests on consensus definitions only. This review aims to summarise the evidence regarding Long COVID in children and adolescents, incorporating the latest studies on this topic. (2) Methods: We designed a comprehensive search strategy to capture all relevant publications using Medline via the PubMed interface, with the initial literature search conducted in April 2023. To be included, publications had to present original data and include >50 participants with Long COVID symptoms aged between 0 and18 years. (3) Results: A total of 51 studies met the inclusion criteria, with most studies originating from Europe (n = 34; 66.7%), followed by the Americas (n = 8; 15.7%) and Asia (n = 7; 13.7%). Various study designs were employed, including retrospective, cross-sectional, prospective, or ambispective approaches. Study sizes varied significantly, with 18/51 studies having fewer than 500 participants. Many studies had methodological limitations: 23/51 (45.1%) studies did not include a control group without prior COVID-19 infection. Additionally, a considerable number of papers (33/51; 64.7%) did not include a clear definition of Long COVID. Other limitations included the lack of PCR- or serology-based confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 infection in the study group. Across different studies, there was high variability in the reported prevalence of Long COVID symptoms, ranging from 0.3% to 66.5%, with the majority of studies included in this review reporting prevalences of approximately 10–30%. Notably, the two studies with the highest prevalences also reported very high prevalences of Long COVID symptoms in the control group. There was a relatively consistent trend for Long COVID prevalence to decline substantially over time. The prevalence of Long COVID appeared to differ across different paediatric age groups, with teenagers being more commonly affected than younger children. Furthermore, data suggest that children and adolescents are less commonly affected by Long COVID compared to adults. In children and adolescents, Long COVID is associated with a very broad range of symptoms and signs affecting almost every organ system, with the respiratory, cardiovascular, and neuropsychiatric systems being most commonly affected. This study aims to review the scientific evidence regarding the effects of table tennis practice on children and adolescents. Studies were searched in three electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, and SportDiscus) from their inception up to May 2024. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the 10-point Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) and Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies (MINORS). A total of twelve studies were examined, with interventions involving children with intellectual disabilities, ADHD, DCD, ASD, and typically developing children. A variety of training programs were assessed over durations ranging from 6 weeks to 1 year in the studies included. Table tennis was shown to positively impact various domains, including executive function, motor skills, visual perception, graphomotor function, gross motor skills, coordination capacity, behavioral inhibition, and social behavior. Nonetheless, it is imperative to expand the number of studies on children and adolescents with diverse conditions to more comprehensively evaluate the benefits of table tennis for each specific condition. Background: Football, as the most popular sport worldwide, has long been under suspicion of causing varus knee alignment as early as adolescence. However, no causal relationship has yet been found. The first step to do so would be to determine the prevalence of lower leg malalignment among male junior football players depending on age, performance level and the number of active seasons played. Methods: Leg axis alignment in frontal plane was determined in male junior football players of different age levels between 7 and 18 years by measuring the intercondylar/intermalleolar distance (ICD/IMD) in an upright position. In addition to anthropometric data, multiple sport-specific data such as the start of their football career or training time per week were collected by means of questionnaires (clinical trial registration number: DRKS00020446). Results: 207 male junior football players were included in this survey. The mean age was 12.8 years. Within the group of 15 to 18 year olds, the prevalence of varus knee malalignment was highest at just under a third (32.1%). In the subpopulation that played actively for more than ten seasons, 28.9% showed varus leg axis. Regarding performance level, the highest IMD/ICD values and highest prevalence of varus alignment were found among football players who play on a semi-professional level (16.7%), compared to amateur (11.4%) and high-performance levels (2.8%). Conclusions: Further research is necessary to investigate if this high prevalence of varus knee in children of a higher age and higher playing levels is due to the selection bias of football players with varus knee or a real development of varus knee in individuals. Background/Objectives: There is a need to monitor physical fitness in HIV-diagnosed children and adolescents, and body mass index (BMI) could be an option for this due to its usability for assessing nutritional status and fat mass. The present study aimed to explore the relationship between BMI and physical fitness in HIV-diagnosed children and adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 86 HIV-diagnosed children and adolescents aged 5–15, with participants from two research protocols (Study I, n = 65; Study II, n = 21). Physical fitness was assessed through body composition (anthropometric measurements and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), cardiorespiratory fitness (peak oxygen consumption [VO2peak]), muscle strength/endurance (handgrip strength, standing broad jump, and abdominal and modified push-up endurance), and flexibility (sit-to reach test). The relationship between BMI and physical fitness components was analyzed through correlation and simple and multiple linear regression analysis. Results: Eutrophic participants (mean age 11.44 ± 2.20) presented a normal fat mass percentage and overweight participants (mean age 11.50 ± 2.54) presented adequate handgrip strength. The adjusted models could explain 71% of fat-free mass, 57% of fat mass percentage, 70% of bone mineral content, 72% of bone mineral density, and 52% of handgrip strength. Conclusions: Increases in BMI were associated with increases in fat-free mass, fat mass percentage, bone mineral content, bone mineral density, and handgrip strength. Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, including real-time CGM and intermittently scanned CGM, have revolutionized diabetes management, particularly in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). These systems provide detailed insights into glucose variability and detect asymptomatic and nocturnal hypoglycemia, addressing limitations of traditional self-monitoring blood glucose methods. CGM devices measure interstitial glucose concentrations constantly, enabling proactive therapeutic decisions and optimization of glycemic control through stored data analysis. CGM metrics such as time in range, time below range, and coefficient of variation are crucial for managing T1D, with emerging metrics like time in tight range and glycemia risk index showing potential for enhanced glycemic assessment. Recent advancements suggest the utility of CGM systems in monitoring the early stages of T1D and individuals with obesity complicated by pre-diabetes, highlighting its therapeutic versatility. This review discusses the current CGM systems for T1D during the pediatric age, established and emerging metrics, and future applications, emphasizing the critical role of CGM devices in improving glycemic control and clinical outcomes in children and adolescents with diabetes. Background: This study aims to analyze the influence of relative age effects, siblings, and digit ratio on the agility of children and adolescents. Methods: The study included 283 children (9.54 ± 1.36 years) and 296 adolescents (14.68 ± 1.36 years) from four different schools. The analyzed variables included anthropometric data, the presence of siblings, relative age effect, and results from the 10 × 5 m shuttle run test. Results: The findings indicated no significant association between agility and either the 2D:4D ratio or the relative age effect in both children and adolescents (p > 0.05). Additionally, having siblings did not have a notable impact on agility. Multiple regression analysis confirmed that relative age did not influence this lack of association (quarter of birth: p = 0.345, β = 0.039; siblings: p = 0.100, β = −0.069). However, boys showed higher performance than girls in the 10 × 5 m shuttle run test, and higher body mass index was related to lower agility. Background: Worldwide, dental caries is a bacterial biofilm-mediated condition with a high morbidity in children and adolescents. Flavonoids are a class of active natural products with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect. In vivo and in vitro studies have shown that they can promote tooth mineralization and reduce inflammation. However, the association of flavonoids intake and dental caries in children and adolescents remain unclear. Aim: This study was to evaluated the association of flavonoid and its subclass intake and dental caries in children and adolescents. Methods: Data of participants aged 2-17 years were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (2017-2018). Dental caries was measured via the decayed or filled surfaces in primary teeth or permanent teeth (dfs/DFS) index. The weighted univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were utilized to explore the association of flavonoids intake with dental caries in children and adolescents, with odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroups analyses based on age, and overweight/obesity were further assessed the association. Subgroup analysis were further performed to explore whether the association between subclasses of anthocyanidins and catechins with dental caries was robust stratified by age and individual with overweight/obesity. Results: Among totally 1,818 children and adolescents, 786 (43.2%) had dental caries. High intake of anthocyanidins (OR=0.69, 95%CI: 0.52-0.92) and catechins (OR=0.64, 95%CI: 0.44-0.92) were associated with lower odds of dental caries. Similar results were discovered in individuals aged ≥6 years (anthocyanidins, OR=0.62, 95%CI: 0.43-0.90; catechins, OR=0.62, 95%CI: 0.40-0.96), and without overweight/obesity (anthocyanidins, OR=0.58, 95%CI: 0.37-0.90; catechins, OR=0.51, 95%CI: 0.31-0.84). Further investigation found that high intake of cyanidin, petunidin, malvidin, peonidin, (+)-Catechin, (-)-Epigallocatechin, and (-)-epicatechin were associated with lower odds of dental caries in children and adolescents. Conclusion: High intake of anthocyanidins and catechins were associated with lower odds of dental caries in children and adolescents and are a promising intervention to be further explored in children and adolescents. Introduction: HIV infection and its treatment compromises skeletal development (growth and maturation). Skeletal maturity is assessed as bone age (BA) on hand and wrist radiographs. BA younger than chronological age (CA) indicates delayed development. We conducted a cross-sectional study to determine differences between BA and CA (i.e., skeletal maturity deviation [SMD]), and risk factors associated with SMD in peripubertal children with and without HIV established on antiretroviral therapy (ART) including use of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF). Methods: Children with HIV taking ART for at least two years and a comparison group of HIV-negative children, aged 8–16 years and frequency-matched by age and sex, were recruited from HIV clinics and local schools in the same catchment area, in Harare, Zimbabwe. BA was assessed from non-dominant hand-wrist radiographs using the Tanner Whitehouse 3 method. Negative SMD values correspond to delayed development, i.e., BA younger than CA. Multivariable linear regression models determined factors associated with SMD overall, and in children with HIV. Results: In total, 534 participants (54% males) were included; by design CA was similar in males and females, whether living with or without HIV. Mean (SD) SMD was more negative in CWH than in HIV-negative children in both males [-1.4(1.4) vs. -0.4(1.1) years] and females [-1.1(1.3) vs. -0.0(1.2) years]. HIV infection and weight-for-age Z-score<-2 were associated with more negative SMD in both males and females after adjusting for socio-economic status, orphanhood, pubertal stage, and calcium intake. Age at ART initiation was associated with SMD in both males and females with those starting ART later more delayed: starting ART aged 4–8 years 1.14 (-1.84, -0.43), or over 8 years 1.47 (-2.30, -0.65) (p-value for trend < 0.001). Similar non-significant trends were seen in males. TDF exposure TDF exposure whether < 4years or ≥ 4 years was not associated with delayed development. Conclusion: Perinatally-acquired HIV infection and being underweight were independently associated with delayed skeletal maturation in both males and females. Starting ART later was independently associated with skeletal maturation delay in CWH. Given the known effects of delayed development on later health, it is important to find interventions to ensure healthy weight gain through early years and in CWH to initiate ART as early as possible. Background: Mental health and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in children and adolescents deteriorated during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this population-based longitudinal study was to explore whether distinct mental health trajectories in youths can be identified over the course of the pandemic. Methods: Mental health problems (MHP), psychosomatic symptoms and HRQoL were assessed at five time points between May 2020 and October 2022 in 744 children and adolescents aged 7 to 20 years using established instruments. We used generalized mixture modeling to identify distinct mental health trajectories and fixed-effects regressions to analyse covariates of the identified profiles of change. Results: We found five distinct linear latent trajectory classes each for externalising MHP and psychosomatic symptoms and four trajectory classes for internalising MHP. For HRQoL, a single-class solution that indicates a common development process proved to be optimal. The largest groups remained almost stable at a low internalising and externalising symptom level (64 to 74%) and consistently showed moderate psychosomatic symptoms (79%), while 2 to 18% showed improvements across the pandemic. About 10% of the youths had consistently high internalising problems, while externalising problems deteriorated in 18% of youths. Class membership was significantly associated with initial HRQoL, parental and child burden, personal resources, family climate and social support. Conclusions: The mental health of most children and adolescents remained resilient throughout the pandemic. However, a sizeable number of youths had consistently poor or deteriorating mental health. Background: Aripiprazole is the most frequently recommended antipsychotic for the treatment of tics in children and adolescents with Tourette's disorder (TD). However, to date, a randomized controlled trial for aripiprazole oral solution has not been conducted despite being widely preferred by children. Therefore, we examined whether aripiprazole oral solution is effective for treating tics. Methods: All patients received a flexible dose of aripiprazole oral solution (1 mg/mL, range: 2–20 mg) with a starting dose of 2 mg. The target dose for patients weighing < 50 kg was 2, 5, and 10 mg/day, and that for patients weighing ≥ 50 kg was 5, 10, 15, and 20 mg/day. The primary efficacy endpoint was the mean change in the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale-total tic score (YGTSS-TTS) from baseline to week 8. Results: Of the 121 patients enrolled, 59 patients (96.7%) in the aripiprazole group and 53 patients (88.3%) in the placebo group completed the study. The aripiprazole group showed significantly greater improvement in the YGTSS-TTS from baseline to week 8 than the placebo group (least squares mean difference [95% confidence interval (CI)] −5.5 [95% CI − 8.4 to − 2.6]). At week 8, the response rate (i.e., percentage of patients with a Tourette's Syndrome Clinical Global Impression-Improvement score of 1 or 2) of the aripiprazole group (86.4%) was significantly higher than that of the placebo group (56.6%; odds ratio: 3.6, p < 0.001). The incidence of treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) reported in at least one patient was 86.9% in the aripiprazole group and 65.5% in the placebo group. All TEAEs were mild or moderate in severity. No serious adverse events or deaths occurred during the study. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that aripiprazole oral solution is an effective, well-tolerated, and safe treatment for children and adolescents with TD. Background: Physical activity is widely promoted to maintain and improve health across all ages. Investigating how physical activity affects subsequent food intake provides insight into the factors that contribute to maintaining energy balance and effective weight management. Objective: This systematic review and meta-analysis summarizes the evidence on the effect of acute physical activity on subsequent food intake in children and adolescents. Methods: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines (PRISMA) were applied. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) objectively measuring post-exercise energy intake in children and adolescents aged 5 to 18 years were included. Studies with self-reported food intake were excluded. The databases PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were searched for RCTs, and the data were summarized at a qualitative and quantitative level. Version 2 of the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials was used to assess risk of bias. Changes in energy intake were examined with random effects meta-analysis. (PROSPERO: CRD42022324259). Results: Out of 9582 studies, 22 RCTs with cross-over design remained eligible for meta-analysis. The primary outcome was post-intervention energy intake up to the next 24 h. Heterogeneity of studies was moderate, with an I2 of 57%. The median (interquartile range, IQR) energy expended while exercising was 240 (158) kcal. Meta-analysis of 41 study arms (exercise n = 780 and control n = 478) showed no differences in total energy intake between the exercise and control group with a mean difference MD = 23.31 [-27.54, 74.15] kcal. No subgroup differences were found. Macronutrient intake and appetite sensations where not substantially affected. Conclusion: Engaging in exercise is a suitable means of raising activity-induced energy expenditure, without causing any noticeable changes in food intake or hunger within a single day. Background. Recognizing the significance of maturity-related adaptations is imperative for specialists and coaches when designing training regimens to nurture long-term athlete development. Objective. This study aims to explore how both chronological age and maturity status influence anthropometric measurements and physical performance in elite youth male soccer-players. Additionally, our goal is to establish percentile values for anthropometric variables and physical performance across different maturity groups. Methods. Two-hundred-eighty-seven soccer-players aged between 12-17 years participated in this study. Anthropometric measurements, including leg-muscle-volume (LMV), along with soccer-specific-physical-performances (SPP) such as Squat-Jump (SJ), Countermovement-Jump (CMJ), sprinting performances, and intermittent-endurance tests were assessed. Players were categorized into age groups (U12 to U17) and six maturational groups based on their maturity offset, ranging from -2.5 to +2.5 years. Results. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were observed in anthropometric variables and SPP among different maturity groups. Body mass, leg length, and leg muscle volume exhibited consistent changes across consecutive maturity groups. Notably, jumping performances, particularly CMJ/SJ, were significantly influenced by maturity status, showing a progression of changes from -0.5 to +0.5 maturity groups for CMJ and from -0.5 to +0.5 maturity groups for SJ. Similarly, sprinting performances were significantly affected by maturity status, particularly in the -1.5 maturity group. Conclusions. Background: The stage of tooth formation is one of the most reliable indicators for predicting a patient's developmental age by radiographs. This study compared the accuracy of three distinct dental age estimation methods (Demirjian, Nolla, and Willems) in children aged 3–17 in the northern Iranian population. Methods: This cross‐sectional study examined panoramic radiographs of 434 children aged 3–17 from Mazandaran Province, Iran, who had teeth 31–37 present on the left mandible. This study employed the Demirjian, Nolla, and Willems methods to estimate the dental age of the sample and compare it with the chronological age. The data were analyzed using SPSS v16. A paired t‐test was used to compare chronological and dental ages. The Pearson correlation was used to correlate the chronological and dental ages. The errors of different methods were compared using the Wilcoxon test. P values < 0.05 were considered significant for all tests except Wilcoxon. For Wilcoxon, a P value < 0.017 was considered significant. Results: The three methods presented differing mean estimated ages. The Demirjian method delivered the highest mean, and all three methods differed significantly when compared in pairs. The results showed that the Demirjian method overestimated chronological age by 0.25 years (P < 0.001) in girls and 0.09 years (P = 0.28) in boys. The Willems method underestimated chronological age by 0.05 years (P = 0.47) in girls and 0.12 years (P = 0.13) in boys. The Nolla method underestimated chronological age by 0.41 years (P < 0.001) in girls and 0.40 years (P < 0.001) in boys. The accuracy of each method varied with the patient's age. Conclusion: According to the findings, the Willems method outperformed the Demirjian method, and the Demirjian method exceeded the Nolla method for estimating dental age in Iranian children aged 3–17. This article examines characteristics and pathogenesis of long COVID in children and adolescents, and their implications for nursing management. Long COVID is a complex set of symptoms that follows a SARS-CoV-2 infection. After the acute phase, children can develop long COVID with symptoms that vary in intensity and duration, and do not necessarily present progressively. Long COVID is a growing health concern among children because its symptoms often overlap and fluctuate. Symptoms depend upon the organ affected, and can consist of shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, headache, and cognitive and memory issues, among many others. Most children with long COVID tend to be adolescents, with females more commonly affected than males. A post-viral autoimmune injury is a probable cause of long COVID syndrome. Nurses need to consider that while physical symptoms are likely foremost, feelings of stress, anxiety, anger, and depression among children and adolescents are also present. Background: Cancer treatments may affect adolescents' and young adults' reproductive systems. Although some side effects may be temporary, infertility can be lifelong. The American Society of Clinical Oncology 2018 Guideline suggests all oncology health care providers be prepared to discuss infertility as a possible late effect of a patient's treatment (Oktay et al., 2018). However, oncology providers continue to report a lack of familiarity and confidence in discussing fertility preservation options and processes. Objectives: Objectives of this literature review were to provide a clinical overview for oncology nurse practitioners discussing fertility preservation options with patients, and to address the importance of the oncology nurse practitioner's role in this field. Method: A literature review was performed using PubMed and CINAHL for publications within the last 10 years. The search terms fertility preservation and pediatric oncology, oncology nurse practitioner, and role yielded 216 articles. A total of 17 articles were identified as relevant to this review and are synthesized in the article. Results: An overview of clinical information, including fertility preservation options and related topics, was identified. However, although the literature describes the role of nurses providing direct patient care and the oncologist in fertility preservation for children and young adults with cancer, limited literature describes the nurse practitioner's role. The author applied the literature describing the role of the nurse practitioner in pediatric oncology to their role in fertility preservation for these patients. Conclusion: The nurse practitioner's ability to spend extended time with patients, an integral role in patient education, and experience with care coordination position them to be the ideal designated fertility preservation provider. In recent decades, many researchers have focused on the development of Conduct Problems from childhood to adolescence. Understanding behavior problems also requires an understanding of well-regulated characteristics. Focusing our assessment on strengths makes it possible, on the one hand, to help children or adolescents with deficits in important areas (e.g., socio-emotional deficits) to develop emotional regulation skills and adapt their responses to different contexts. This study aims to understand the role of self-competence, self-regulation, empathy, and responsibility (strength variables) in the relationship between Callous Unemotional characteristics and Conduct Problems, with a sample of 236 children aged between 3 and 10 years (M = 7.51, SD = 1.63), through mediation analysis. In general, our findings suggest that self-regulation significantly explains the relationship between the callous dimension of the Inventory of Callous–Unemotional Traits and Conduct Problems, pointing out that this strength variable seems to act as a protective factor against the development of behavior problems. Obesity is a worldwide increasing concern. Although in adults this is easily estimated with the body mass index, in children, who are constantly growing and whose bodies are changing, the reference points to assess weight status are age and gender, and need corroboration with complementary data, making their quantification highly difficult. The present review explores the interaction spectrum of oxidative stress, selenium status, and obesity in children and adolescents. Any factor related to oxidative stress that triggers obesity and, conversely, obesity that induces oxidative stress are part of a vicious circle, a complex chain of mechanisms that derive from each other and reinforce each other with serious health consequences. Selenium and its compounds exhibit key antioxidant activity and also have a significant role in the nutritional evaluation of obese children. The balance of selenium intake, retention, and metabolism emerges as a vital aspect of health, reflecting the complex interactions between diet, oxidative stress, and obesity. Understanding whether selenium status is a contributor to or a consequence of obesity could inform nutritional interventions and public health strategies aimed at preventing and managing obesity from an early age. Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection presentation in children is usually milder than in adults but can be severe and fatal as well. Data on the pediatric population regarding severity and clinical presentation are still limited, and there is a need to have a better understanding of clinical features, severity, and laboratory parameters. Aims and Objective: To document clinical and laboratory characteristics and outcomes of children with SARS-CoV-2 in a low-middle-income country and to evaluate clinicodemographic factors and biochemical markers associated with severity and mortality. Materials and Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 112 COVID-19-positive children at a designated Level-3 center in North India. Clinical characteristics, laboratory parameters, and severity of COVID-19 cases as well as factors associated with the severity of the disease, were analyzed by descriptive statistics and a Chi-square test. Results: The adolescent age group (age 12-18 years) was affected most (64.3%). Male patients accounted for 56.3% of total cases. Fever was the most common symptom (41.1%) followed by cough. Presenting complaints were highest from the respiratory system (32.1%) followed by the gastrointestinal (8.9%) and the neurological system (7.1%). Majority of patients had mild disease (87%) while 13% had the moderate-severe disease. Spo2 < 95% (P = 0.00001), neutrophilia (P < 0.000001), lymphopenia (P < 0.000001), elevated values of C-reactive protein (P < 0.00001), Interleukin-6 (P = 0.002), D-dimer (P = 0.00014) and respiratory symptoms as presenting complaints (P < 0.000001) were found to be significantly associated with severity of disease. Conclusion: The male and adolescent age group was affected most. Presenting complaints were highest from the respiratory system. Unusual presentation may have gastrointestinal or neurological presentation. Most children with COVID-19 had mild disease. Moderate to severe disease was not uncommon. Factors including neutrophilia, lymphopenia, elevated lab values of C-reactive protein, D-dimer, and interleukin-6 had a significant association with the severity of the disease. Skeletal radiographs along with dental examination are frequently used for age estimation in medicolegal cases where documentary evidence pertaining to age is not available. Wrist and hand radiographs are the most common skeletal radiograph considered for age estimation. Other parts imaged are elbow, shoulder, knee, and hip according to suspected age categories. Age estimation by wrist radiographs is usually done by the Tanner-Whitehouse method where the maturity level of each bone is categorized into stages and a final total score is calculated that is then transformed into the bone age. Careful assessment and interpretation at multiple joints are needed to minimize the error and categorize into age-group. In this article, we aimed to summarize a suitable radiographic examination and interpretation for bone age estimation in living children, adolescents, young adults, and adults for medicolegal purposes. Background Trauma is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide among children. Nonoperative management is the standard of care in hemodynamically stable children with blunt abdominal solid organ injury. Embolization is a potential pathway, which has shown increasing evidence for benefit in adult trauma patients. However, the data in children is limited. Materials and Methods A retrospective analysis of hospital data of all children (<18 years of age), presenting to a tertiary-care trauma center in India, with history of blunt trauma from January 2021 to June 2023, was performed. Preprocedural imaging, angiographic and embolization details, number of blood transfusions, and length of hospital stay were assessed. Results Two hundred and sixteen children (average age: 11.65 years) presented with a history of abdominal trauma during the study period. Eighty four children were FAST positive, out of whom, 67 patients had abdominal solid organ injury on computed tomography. Liver was the most commonly injured solid organ (n = 45), followed by the spleen and kidney. Ten children had solid abdominal organ arterial injuries for which eight children underwent embolization. The average length of hospital stay in embolization group (n = 8) was 4 days, as compared to 11 days in children undergoing operative management (n = 2). At 6 months follow-up, all children were asymptomatic. Conclusion Superselective embolization is a safe and feasible procedure in appropriately selected children with abdominal injury.
