The Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a network of Sensor Nodes (SN) which adopt radio signals for communication amongst themselves. There is an increase in the prominence of WSN adaptability to emerging applications like the Internet of Things (IoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS). Data security, detection of faults, management of energy, collection and distribution of data, network protocol, network coverage, mobility of nodes, and network heterogeneity are some of the issues confronted by WSNs. There is not much published information on issues related to node mobility and management of energy at the time of aggregation of data. Towards the goal of boosting the mobility-based WSNs' network performance and energy, data aggregation protocols such as the presently-used Mobility Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH-M) and Energy Efficient Heterogeneous Clustered (EEHC) scheme have been examined in this work. A novel Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm is proposed in this work for effective election of CHs and multipath routing in WSNs so as to enable effective data transfer to the Base Station (BS) with least energy utilization. There is avoidance of the local optima problem at the time of solution space search in this proposed technique. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are considerably used for various environmental sensing applications. The architecture and internal specifications of WSNs have been chosen based on the requirements of particular applications. On this basis, WSNs consist of resource (energy and memory)-limited wireless sensor nodes. WSNs initiate data communication from source to destination via physical layer management principles, channel slot scheduling principles (time division multiple access), wireless medium access control (WMAC) protocols, wireless routing protocols and application protocols. In this environment, the development of WMAC principles, routing protocols and channel allotment schemes play crucial roles in network communication phases. Consequently, these layering functions consume more energy at each sensor node, which leads to minimal network lifetime. Even though the channel management schemes, medium control protocols and routing protocols are functionally suitable, the excessive energy consumption affects the overall network performance. In this situation, energy optimization algorithms are advised to minimize the resource wastage of WSNs during regular operations (medium control and routing process). Many research works struggle to identify the optimal energy-efficient load balancing strategies to improve WSN functions. With this in mind, the proposed article has conducted a detailed literature review and notable experimental comparisons on energy-efficient MAC protocols, channel scheduling policies and energy-efficient routing protocols. To an extent, the detailed analysis over these wireless network operations helps to understand the benefits and limitations of recent research works. In the experimental section of this article, eight existing techniques are evaluated under energy optimization strategies (WMAC, channel allocation, sleep/wake protocols, integrated routing and WMAC policies, balanced routing and cooperative routing). The proposed review and the classified technical observations collected from notable recent works have been recognized as crucial contributions. The results infer the suggestions for feasible WSN communication strategies with optimal channel management policies and routing policies. A new region-based energy-conscious sink movement (RESM) is presented to enhance the lifetime of the heterogeneous wireless sensor network using stable election protocol. The movement is based on the total energy of the individual regions of the entire sensing field. The sink always moves to the centre of the lowest nonzero energy region, which is the main contribution of this work. Based on the residual energy of the regions, RESM enhances the network lifetime. Simulation results prove that this approach prolongs the network lifetime as compared to other sink movement methods such as continuous movement in the periphery and the centre as well as other existing algorithms such as LEACH, SEP, and MSE. APTEEN is a typical routing protocol for wireless sensor networks, but when clustering, cluster heads are randomly selected, which makes it easy to select nodes with low residual energy as cluster heads, thus forming network holes. At the same time, in multi hop transmission, the cluster head near the sink node is overloaded due to forwarding a large amount of data. Aiming at these problems, this paper introduces PSO algorithm and proposes ADCH-EPE-APTEEN routing protocol. In order to make the particle swarm optimization algorithm more suitable for routing protocol, this paper first proposes DCA-PSO based on particle swarm optimization algorithm. DCA-PSO uses the classification adaptive change inertia weight for different states of particles in the optimization process. At the same time, dynamic learning factor is used to improve the influence of particle experience and other particle experience on convergence speed and to improve the optimization accuracy and speed of the algorithm. Secondly, when APTEEN routing protocol is networked, the cluster head is selected by DCA-PSO, in which the residual energy of nodes, the location of nodes, and the energy distribution around nodes are fully taken into consideration. Thirdly, considering the distance between nodes and the sink node, the residual energy and the energy distribution around nodes, a front area is set up in the cluster located in the upper half and the assistant cluster head is selected in the front area through the DCA-PSO algorithm. The simulation results show that the DCA-PSO algorithm can significantly improve the search speed and precision compared with the PSO algorithm. WSN (Wireless Sensor Network) comprises of small-sized and constraint-capability SN (Sensor Nodes) which record, send and receive data, sensed to a sink. The network lifetime and energy usability are important challenges to be dealt with. During the working of the SN, the maximum amount of energy is consumed than sensing and processing of data. Therefore, an efficient transmission of the data is required so that the energy can be saved. In this paper, a novel routing and scheduling method for WSNs using GA (Genetic Algorithm) is presented, where the sinks employed on four sides of the sensor field. These sinks collect the data from the SNs having the optimal distance towards the respective sink. The proposed scheme finds the optimized path using GA, during transmission of data from SN to the nearest sink. First, we run the GA for determination of routing paths, where a source SN finds the possible number of optimal hops. Second, the hops or intermediate relay SNs are assumed to relay the data towards the sink, efficiently. The performance is experimented and evaluated using MATLAB R2016b. The simulations have carried out through comparing the proposed scheme with TEEN (Threshold Sensitive Energy Efficient Sensor Network Protocol). The results of simulation comprise of 10 and 20 number of SNs, discretely. Additionally, the direct distance of each node is calculated and the distance through multiple hops from/to the nearest sink is also evaluated. Wireless sensor networks encounter energy saving as a major issue as the sensor nodes having no rechargeable batteries and also the resources are limited. Clustering of sensors play a pivotal role in energy saving of the deployed sensor nodes. However, in the cluster based wireless sensor network, the cluster heads tend to consume more energy for additional functions such as reception of data, aggregation and transmission of the received data to the base station. So, careful selection of cluster head and formation of cluster plays vital role in energy conservation and enhancement of lifetime of the wireless sensor networks. This study proposes a new mutation chemical reaction optimization (MCRO) which is an algorithm based energy efficient clustering protocol termed as MCRO-ECP, for wireless sensor networks. The proposed protocol is extensively developed with effective methods such as potential energy function and molecular structure encoding for cluster head selection and cluster formation. While developing potential functions for energy conservation, the following parameters are taken into account: neighbor node distance, base station distance, ratio of energy, intra-cluster distance, and CH node degree to make the MCRO-ECP protocol to be potential energy conserver. The proposed protocol is studied extensively and tested elaborately on NS2.35 Simulator under various senarios like varying the number of sensor nodes and CHs. Abstract Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have emerged as one of the prominent area of research in the recent times. Sensor-MAC (S-MAC) protocol is one of the Medium Access Control(MAC)protocols, which follows the idea of periodic listen and sleep. In other words, node is active till the time it receives the data packets, otherwise it goes in sleep mode by turning its radio off. However, this protocol lacks in energy conservation due to unnecessary listening to the channel in idle mode. In this paper, we have proposed a new analytical model in which energy is reduced on the basis of the activities it performs in the active mode. A comparison is made between all the different possibilities which can occur at a node, when it listens unnecessarily to the medium. Various energy consuming modes of S-MAC protocol such as transmission, reception, sensing and listening are considered. This paper presents the design of a wireless sensor network particularly designed for remote monitoring and control of industrial parameters. The article describes the network components, protocol and sensor deployment, aimed to accomplish industrial constraint and to assure reliability and low power consumption. A particular case of study is presented. The system consists of a base station, gas sensing nodes, a tree-based routing scheme for the wireless sensor nodes and a real-time monitoring application that operates from a remote computer and a mobile phone. The system assures that the industrial safety quality and the measurement and monitoring system achieves an efficient industrial monitoring operations. The robustness of the developed system and the security in the communications have been guaranteed both in hardware and software level. The system is flexible and can be adapted to different environments. The testing of the system confirms the feasibility of the proposed implementation and validates the functional requirements of the developed devices, the networking solution and the power consumption management. Energy Harvesting techniques are increasingly seen as the solution for freeing the wireless sensor nodes from their battery dependency. However, it remains evident that network performance features, such as network size, packet length, and duty cycle, are influenced by the sum of recovered energy. This paper proposes a new approach to defining the specifications of a stand-alone wireless node based on a Radio-frequency Energy Harvesting System (REHS). To achieve adequate performance regarding the range of the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), techniques for minimizing the energy consumed by the sensor node are combined with methods for optimizing the performance of the REHS. For more rigor in the design of the autonomous node, a comprehensive energy model of the node in a wireless network is established. For an equitable distribution of network charges between the different nodes that compose it, the Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) protocol is used for this purpose. The model considers five energy-consumption sources, most of which are ignored in recently used models. By using the hardware parameters of commercial off-the-shelf components (Mica2 Motes and CC2520 of Texas Instruments), the energy requirement of a sensor node is quantified. A miniature REHS based on a judicious choice of rectifying diodes is then designed and developed to achieve optimal performance in the Industrial Scientific and Medical (ISM) band centralized at 2.45 GHz. Due to the mismatch between the REHS and the antenna, a band pass filter is designed to reduce reflection losses. A gradient method search is used to optimize the output characteristics of the adapted REHS. At 1 mW of input RF power, the REHS provides an output DC power of 0.57 mW and a comparison with the energy requirement of the node allows the Base Station (BS) to be located at 310 m from the wireless nodes when theWireless Sensor Network (WSN) has 100 nodes evenly spread over an area of 300 × 300 m2 and when each round lasts 10 min. The result shows that the range of the autonomous WSN increases when the controlled physical phenomenon varies very slowly. Having taken into account all the dissipation sources coexisting in a sensor node and using actual measurements of an REHS, this work provides the guidelines for the design of autonomous nodes based on REHS. In the area of wireless sensor networks the network is composed of a significant number of nodes deployed in an extensive area in which not all nodes are directly connected. The sensor nodes are generally unattended after their deployment in hazardous, hostile or remote areas. Wireless Sensor Networks hold the limelight because of significant potential for distributed sensing of large geographical areas. The radio duty cycling mechanism that turns off the radio periodically is necessary for the energy conservation, but it deteriorates the network congestion when the traffic load is high, which increases the packet loss and the delay too. Although many papers for WSNs have tried to mitigate network congestion, none of them has mentioned the congestion problem caused by the radio duty cycling of MAC protocols. In this paper, we present a simple and efficient congestion control technique that operates on the radio duty cycling MAC protocol. It detects the congestion by checking the current queue size. If it detects the congestion, it extends the network capacity by adding supplementary wakeup times. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme highly reduces the packet loss and the delay. With the development of electronic technology and communication protocols, wireless sensor network technology is developing rapidly. In a sense, the traditional static wireless sensor network has been unable to meet the needs of new applications. However, the introduction of mobile nodes extends the application of wireless sensor networks, despite the technical challenges. Because of its flexibility, the mobile wireless sensor network has attracted great attention, and even small, self-controlled mobile sensor devices have appeared. At present, mobile node localization has become one of the hotspots in wireless sensor networks. As the storage energy of wireless sensor network nodes is limited, and the communication radius is small, many scientists have focused their research direction on the location algorithm of mobile nodes. According to the continuity principle of mobile node movement, in this paper we propose an improved mobile node localization algorithm based on the Monte Carlo Location (MCL) algorithm, and the method can reduce the sampling interval effectively. First of all, this paper introduces the structure and classification of wireless sensor localization technology. Secondly, the principle of the Monte Carlo Location algorithm is described in detail. Thirdly, we propose an efficient method for mobile node localization based on the MCL algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness and accuracy of the new algorithm are verified by comparative analysis. The development of intrusion detection systems (IDS) that are adapted to allow routers and network defence systems to detect malicious network traffic disguised as network protocols or normal access is a critical challenge. This paper proposes a novel approach called SCDNN, which combines spectral clustering (SC) and deep neural network (DNN) algorithms. First, the dataset is divided into k subsets based on sample similarity using cluster centres, as in SC. Next, the distance between data points in a testing set and the training set is measured based on similarity features and is fed into the deep neural network algorithm for intrusion detection. Six KDD-Cup99 and NSL-KDD datasets and a sensor network dataset were employed to test the performance of the model. These experimental results indicate that the SCDNN classifier not only performs better than backpropagation neural network (BPNN), support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and Bayes tree models in detection accuracy and the types of abnormal attacks found. This paper presents Fuzzy and Ant Colony Optimization Based Combined MAC, Routing, and Unequal Clustering Cross-Layer Protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks (FAMACROW) consisting of several nodes that send sensed data to a Master Station. FAMACROW incorporates cluster head selection, clustering, and inter-cluster routing protocols. FAMACROW uses fuzzy logic with residual energy, number of neighboring nodes, and quality of communication link as input variables for cluster head selection. To avoid hot spots problem, FAMACROW uses an unequal clustering mechanism with clusters closer to MS having smaller sizes than those far from it. FAMACROW uses Ant Colony Optimization based technique for reliable and energy-efficient inter-cluster multi-hop routing from cluster heads to MS. The inter-cluster routing protocol decides relay node considering its: (i) distance from current cluster head and that from MS (for energy-efficient inter-cluster communication), (ii) residual energy (for energy distribution across the network), (iii) queue length (for congestion control), (iv) delivery likelihood (for reliable communication). A comparative analysis of FAMACROW with Unequal Cluster Based Routing [33] , Unequal Layered Clustering Approach [43] , Energy Aware Unequal Clustering using Fuzzy logic [37] and Improved Fuzzy Unequal Clustering [35] shows that FAMACROW is 41% more energy-efficient, has 75–88% more network lifetime and sends 82% more packets compared to Improved Fuzzy Unequal Clustering protocol. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are getting popular for their deployment in unattended environments, where a registered user can log in to the network and access data collected from the desired sensor. Because of limited resources and computation power in sensor nodes, an authentication protocol should be simple and efficient. M.L. Das proposed a two-factor authentication scheme forWSNs. Because his scheme uses only one-way hash function and XOR operation, it is well suited for resourceconstrained environments. Because of some flaws in Das's scheme, several improved schemes have been introduced. In this paper, we show that Das's scheme and its derivatives not only have security imperfections but also do not provide key agreement. To overcome their security shortcomings, we propose a novel user authentication scheme with key agreement for WSN. We furnish security analysis of the proposed protocol to show its robustness to various attacks as well as analyze its performance to determine its efficiency. This paper proposes a cross-layer mobility support scheme for the IPv6 over low-power wireless personal area network (6LoWPAN) wireless sensor network (WSN). This scheme combines the handover in the network layer (L3) with the handover in the link layer (L2) so that the L3 handover and the L2 one can be performed simultaneously. During the L3 handover process, a sensor node neither needs a care-of address nor participates in the handover process. During the L2 handover process, a node uses the channel information to directly achieve the L2 handover without scanning all channels. The Internet of Things or “IoT” defines a highly interconnected network of heterogeneous devices where all kinds of communications seem to be possible, even unauthorized ones. As a result, the security requirement for such network becomes critical whilst common standard Internet security protocols are recognized as unusable in this type of networks, particularly due to some classes of IoT devices with constrained resources. The document discusses the applicability and limitations of existing IP-based Internet security protocols and other security protocols used in wireless sensor networks, which are potentially suitable in the context of IoT. Achieving same notion of time remains an important task for most distributed systems. Time synchronization requires a unique combination of high accuracy ( $$\upmu $$ s level) and energy efficiency. Several application layer protocols have been developed to meet these requirements. This article proposes that the physical layer clock recovery process can provide application layer clock drift estimate, and the application layer clock can be corrected with the help of this estimate. This eliminates the need of application layer time synchronization protocol i.e. the cross-layer approach reduces the number of message exchanges required by application layer for time synchronization that leads to energy conservation. It argues that such a cross-layer approach can provide a more accurate frequency offset estimation, or can achieve greater energy savings, for a given accuracy, by reducing the message exchanges. Analysis of the proposed method provides concrete bounds on achieved improvement. Multicast is a process used to transfer same message to multiple receivers at the same time. This paper presents the simulation and analysis of the performance of six different multicast routing protocols for Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). They are On Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP), Protocol for Unified Multicasting through Announcement (PUMA), Multicast Adhoc On demand Distance Vector Protocol (MAODV), Overlay Boruvka-based Adhoc Multicast Protocol (OBAMP), Application Layer Multicast Algorithm (ALMA) and enhanced version of ALMA (ALMA-H) for WSN. Among them, ODMRP, MAODV and PUMA are reactive protocols while OBAMP, ALMA and ALMA-H are proactive protocols. This paper compares the performance of these protocols with common parameters such as Throughput, Reliability, End-to- End delay and Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) with increasing the numbers of nodes and increasing the speed of the nodes. The main objective of this work is to select the efficient multicast routing protocol for WSN among six multicast routing protocol based on relative strength and weakness of each protocol. The summary of above six multicast routing protocols is presented with a table of different performance characteristics. Experimental result shows that ODMRP attains higher throughput, reliability and higher packet delivery ratio than other multicast routing protocol, while incurring far less end-to-end delay. The two important requirements for many Wireless Senor Networks (WSNs) are prolonged network lifetime and end-to-end reliability. The sensor nodes consume more energy during data transmission than the data sensing. In WSN, the redundant data increase the energy consumption, latency and reduce reliability during data transmission. Therefore, it is important to support energy efficient reliable data transport in WSNs. In this paper, we present a Hierarchical Energy Efficient Reliable Transport Protocol (HEERTP) for the data transmission within the WSN. This protocol maximises the network lifetime by controlling the redundant data transmission with the co-ordination of Base Station (BS). The proposed protocol also achieves end-to-end reliability using a hop-by-hop acknowledgement scheme. We evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol through simulation. Abstract: Wireless reprogramming in a wireless sensor network (WSN) involves the process of propagating a new code image or relevant command to sensor nodes. As a WSN is usually deployed in a hostile environment, secure reprogramming is a major concern. Recently, He et al. proposed a secure distributed reprogramming protocol, SDRP, based on an identity-based signature (IBS) scheme. Subsequently, they showed that SDRP is insecure against impersonation attacks due to the use of insecure IBS scheme. They then proposed a modified SDRP (MSDRP) based on Barreto et al.’s IBS scheme which is provably secure under a mathematically hard problem. Also, they proposed a DoS-resistant distributed code dissemination protocol, DiCode, based on a warrant-based proxy signature scheme. However, the two protocols are inefficient on sensor nodes: MSDRP requires a heavy pairing computation and DiCode requires two modular exponentiations with an RSA modulus n whose size is 1024 bits at an 80-bit security level to verify a signature. In this paper, we show that MSDRP with the implementation of paring defined on is entirely broken. We then propose a new SDRP, S2DRP, based on a pairing-free IBS scheme to reduce the computational and communication overhead and give its performance results. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This paper proposes RIX-MAC (Receiver-Initiated X-MAC), a new energy-efficient MAC protocol based on an asynchronous duty cycling. RIX-MAC improves energy efficiency through utilizing short preambles and adopting the receiver-initiated approach, where RIX-MAC minimizes sender nodes' energy consumption by enabling transmitters to predict receiver nodes' wake-up times. It also reduces receiver nodes' energy consumption by decreasing the number of control frames. We use the network simulator to evaluate RIX-MAC's performance. In view of the problem short network lifetime caused by uneven energy consumption in wireless sensor network application to underground pipe gallery, we researched the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy protocol and the related application, analyzed the deficiency of the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy protocol for underground pipe gallery environment, and proposed algorithm to improve the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy protocol. The improved protocol considered the impact of the nodes, residual energy on the probability threshold in cluster head selection, and added competition mechanism to achieve the cluster head's high residual energy and uneven distribution. In steady-state phase, the algorithm set one-hop transmission threshold, selected the minimum energy consume path in multi-hop transmission to reduce the network energy consumption. Simulation results showed that, in the long ribbon network, compared with the original protocol the network lifetime improved by 2. 66 times and energy consumption was reduced in the same round by using the promoted the Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy. Abstract: Automatic reprogramming is an important and challenging issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). A usual approach is the over-the-air programming (OAP), which is a fundamental service based on reliable broadcast for efficient code dissemination. However, existing OAP protocols do not enable the reprogramming of a subset of the sensor nodes in a WSN. Hence, in this work we propose a multicast-based over-the-air programming protocol that considers a small world infrastructure (MOAP-SW). The small world model is used to create shortcuts toward the sink in the communication infrastructure of sensor networks. The endpoints of these shortcuts are more powerful nodes, resulting in a heterogeneous wireless sensor network. Abstract: This paper proposes employment of artificial neural network techniques to develop in-network “intelligent computation” and “adaptation” capability for wireless sensor networks to improve their functionality, utility and survival aspects. The goal is to introduce computational intelligence capability for the wireless sensor networks to become adaptive to changes within a variety of operational contexts and to exhibit intelligent behaviour. The characteristics of wireless sensor networks bring many challenges, such as the ultra large number of sensor nodes, dense deployment, changing topology structure, and the most importantly, the limited resources including power, computation, storage, and communication capability. All these require the applications and protocols running on wireless sensor network to be not only energy-efficient, scalable and robust, but also “adapt” to changing environment or context, and application scope and focus among others, and demonstrate intelligent behaviour. Abstract: IEEE 802.15.4 as a standard for low rate wireless personal area networks (LR-WPAN) is an applicative choice for implementation of wireless sensor networks. Due to the advantages of this standard and its capabilities for more specification to wireless sensor networks, we were persuaded to resolve some of its proven weaknesses in such environments. The slotted CSMA/CA method utilized in beacon-enabled mode of 802.15.4 causes unacceptable level of energy consumption and throughput in conditions like high loads. To overcome these issues, we proposed an adaptable CSMA/TDMA hybrid channel access method by applying some modifications to the 802.15.4 standard. The energy and throughput improvement is achieved by dedicating a part of the contention access period to a time division medium access protocol (TDMA). To evaluate our proposed method in comparison with 802.15.4, we developed a simulation in OMNeT++. Analysis of the simulation results indicates general improvement of energy consumption and throughput. The resources especially energy in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are quite limited. Since sensor nodes are usually much dense, data sampled by sensor nodes have much redundancy, data aggregation becomes an effective method to eliminate redundancy, minimize the number of transmission, and then to save energy. Many applications can be deployed in WSNs and various sensors are embedded in nodes, the packets generated by heterogenous sensors or different applications have different attributes. The packets from different applications cannot be aggregated. Otherwise, most data aggregation schemes employ static routing protocols, which cannot dynamically or intentionally forward packets according to network state or packet types. The spatial isolation caused by static routing protocol is unfavorable to data aggregation. To make data aggregation more efficient, in this paper, we introduce the concept of packet attribute, defined as the identifier of the data sampled by different kinds of sensors or applications, and then propose an attribute-aware data aggregation (ADA) scheme consisting of a packet-driven timing algorithm and a special dynamic routing protocol. Inspired by the concept of potential in physics and pheromone in ant colony, a potential-based dynamic routing is elaborated to support an ADA strategy. The performance evaluation results in series of scenarios verify that the ADA scheme can make the packets with the same attribute spatially convergent as much as possible and therefore improve the efficiency of data aggregation. Abstract: Graph coloring was exploited in wireless sensor networks to solve many optimization problems. These problems are related in general to channel assignment. In this paper, we propose to jointly use coloring for routing purposes. We introduce CHRA a coloring based hierarchical routing approach. Coloring is exploited to avoid interferences and also to schedule nodes transmissions to sink. We provide an analytical and experimental study assessing the performance of CHRA in terms of end-to-end delay and energy consumption. Abstract: In this paper, we present a Wireless Sensor node implementation which aims at solving two major issues in Wireless Sensor Networks. This solution provides nanosecond-scale synchronization between nodes and high data-rate transmission thanks to cross-layer design and the time-domain properties of UltraWide Band (UWB) modulation schemes. The high data rate is achieved through a specific implementation of a IR-UWB physical layer. Specific algorithms are also implanted into the MAC and physical layers and form a cross-layered synchronization protocol for deterministic Wireless Sensor Networks named WiDeCS (Wireless Deterministic Clock Synchronization). This protocol propagates master time reference to nodes of a cluster tree network. WiDeCS Cross layered scheme is possible thanks to flag signals rising in the physical layer. These signals, owing to the UWB time domain properties, capture precise timestamps of transmission and reception. Hardware level simulations show a clock synchronization precision of 2ns with a 2GHz bandwidth signal, and an ASIC demonstrator shows 374ps synchronization precision and 677ps of standard deviation with the same bandwidth. In a hybrid wireless sensor network with mobile and static nodes, which have no prior geographical knowledge, successful navigation for mobile robots is one of the main challenges. In this paper, we propose two novel navigation algorithms for outdoor environments, which permit robots to travel from one static node to another along a planned path in the sensor field, namely the RAC and the IMAP algorithms. Using this, the robot can navigate without the help of a map, GPS or extra sensor modules, only using the received signal strength indication (RSSI) and odometry. Therefore, our algorithms have the advantage of being cost-effective. In addition, a path planning algorithm to schedule mobile robots' travelling paths is presented, which focuses on shorter distances and robust paths for robots by considering the RSSI-Distance characteristics. Abstract: Every type of network, be it wired or wireless, will be influenced by several key factors for its efficient functioning. Routing issue, applicable to all types of networks, is one among the several such key factors. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has not been exception to this. Moreover, such issues are very critical due to severe resource constraints like efficient energy utilization, lifetime of network, and drastic environmental conditions in WSNs. Neither hop-by-hop or neither direct reach ability is possible in case of WSNs. In this regard, many routing protocols have been proposed to optimize the efficiency of WSNs amidst of above mentioned severe resource constraints. Out of these, clustering algorithms have gained more importance, in increasing the life time of the WSN, because of their approach in cluster head selection and data aggregation. LEACH (distributed) is the first clustering routing protocol which is proven to be better compared to other such algorithms. Abstract: In wireless sensor network, every node''s energy is limited, so how to reduce energy consumption is an important issue to be considered in wireless sensor network routing. This paper proposes a routing protocol for the applications of Wireless Sensor Network. It is a protocol based on the PEGASIS protocol but uses an improved distance threshold algorithm while constructing the chain with the greedy algorithm. PEGASIS is a typical low energy consumption routing protocol for wireless sensor network, but the chain building mechanism based on the greedy algorithm may also cause some defects. This paper suggests an improved algorithm to solve these problems. During the chain building process, we use a distance threshold to prevent the algorithm from choosing too long distance values between the neighbor nodes. Compared with the original PEGASIS, the improved protocol can build a better chain. Simulation results have shown that the proposed protocol significantly prolongs the network lifetime. Abstract: The position verification problem is an important building block for a large subset of wireless sensor network (WSN) applications. Indeed, the performance of the WSN degrades significantly when misbehaving nodes report false location information in order to fake their actual position. In this paper we propose the first deterministic distributed protocol for an accurate identification of faking sensors in a WSN. Our scheme does not rely on a subset of trusted nodes that cooperate and are not allowed to misbehave. Thus, any subset of nodes is allowed to try faking its position. As in previous approaches, our protocol is based on distance evaluation techniques developed for WSN. On the positive side, we show that when the received signal strength (RSS) technique is used, our protocol handles at most faking sensors. When the time of flight (ToF) technique is used, our protocol manages at most misbehaving sensors. On the negative side, we prove that no deterministic protocol can identify faking sensors if their number is . Thus, our scheme is almost optimal with respect to the number of faking sensors. We discuss application of our technique in the trusted sensor model. More specifically, our results can be used to minimize the number of trusted sensors that are needed to defeat faking ones. Abstract: A wireless sensor network is a set of nodes, each is equipped with a sensing device and a wireless communication device. Because centralized control is hard to achieve in a large scale sensor network, self- is a key concept in the design of a wireless sensor network. Self-stabilization is one of the self- properties, and it is one of the most promising theoretical backgrounds for self-organizing wireless sensor network protocols. Herman [T. Herman, Models of self-stabilization and sensor networks, in: Proceedings of the 5th International Workshop of Distributed Computing, IWDC, 2003, pp. 205–214] proposed Cached Sensornet Transform (CST for short) for design and implementation of self-stabilizing algorithms for sensor networks. It transforms a self-stabilizing algorithm in a high-level computational model to a program for sensor networks. Our contribution in this paper is threefold. We show that there exists a non-silent algorithm that behaves correctly in a high-level computational model but its transformed version by CST does not behave correctly if packets are lost. We show a sufficient condition for original algorithms and networks such that the algorithm transformed by CST behaves correctly. Abstract: In many wireless sensor network applications, nodes are mobile, while many protocols proposed for these networks assume a static network. Thus, it is important to evaluate if a traditional protocol designed for a static network can tolerate different levels of mobility. This paper provides an analytic model to investigate the effect of mobility on a well-known cluster-based protocol, LEACH. The model evaluates data loss after construction of the clusters due to node mobility, which can be used to estimate a proper update interval to balance the energy and data loss ratio. Thus, the results can help the network designer to adjust the topology update interval given a value of acceptable data loss threshold. A practical approach to increase the mobility tolerance of the protocol is applying a buffer zone to the transmission ranges of the nodes. The model is extended in order to consider the effect of buffer zone. To validate the analytic evaluations, extensive simulations are conducted and correctness of the evaluations is tightly verified. User authentication is a crucial service in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) that is becoming increasingly common in WSNs because wireless sensor nodes are typically deployed in an unattended environment, leaving them open to possible hostile network attack. Because wireless sensor nodes are limited in computing power, data storage and communication capabilities, any user authentication protocol must be designed to operate efficiently in a resource constrained environment. In this paper, we review several proposed WSN user authentication protocols, with a detailed review of the M.L Das protocol and a cryptanalysis of Das' protocol that shows several security weaknesses. Furthermore, this paper proposes an ECC-based user authentication protocol that resolves these weaknesses. According to our analysis of security of the ECC-based protocol, it is suitable for applications with higher security requirements. Finally, we present a comparison of security, computation, and communication costs and performances for the proposed protocols. IP based Wireless Sensor Networks (IP-WSNs) are gaining importance for their broad range of applications in health-care, home automation, environmental monitoring, industrial control, vehicle telematics and agricultural monitoring. In all these applications, mobility in the sensor network with special attention to energy efficiency is a major issue to be addressed. Host-based mobility management protocols are not suitable for IP-WSNs because of their energy inefficiency, so network based mobility management protocols can be an alternative for the mobility supported IP-WSNs. In this paper we propose a network based mobility supported IP-WSN protocol called Sensor Proxy Mobile IPv6 (SPMIPv6). We present its architecture, message formats and also evaluate its performance considering signaling cost, mobility cost and energy consumption. Our analysis shows that with respect to the number of IP-WSN nodes, the proposed scheme reduces the signaling cost by 60% and 56%, as well as the mobility cost by 62% and 57%, compared to MIPv6 and PMIPv6, respectively. The simulation results also show that in terms of the number of hops, SPMIPv6 decreases the signaling cost by 56% and 53% as well as mobility cost by 60% and 67% as compared to MIPv6 and PMIPv6 respectively. For this protocol, a fixed node (without any limited resources) is established at one point which can communicate with one-hop to both the sink node and the mobile sensor nodes in the dark region (in which mobile sensor nodes cannot communicate to the sink node). The fixed nodes are operated like the fixed cluster head. Abstract: Much of the existing work on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has focused on addressing the power and computational resource constraints of WSNs by the design of specific routing, MAC, and cross-layer protocols. Recently, there have been heightened privacy concerns over the data collected by and transmitted through WSNs. The wireless transmission required by a WSN, and the self-organizing nature of its architecture, makes privacy protection for WSNs an especially challenging problem. This paper provides a state-of-the-art survey of privacy-preserving techniques for WSNs. In particular, we review two main categories of privacy-preserving techniques for protecting two types of private information, data-oriented and context-oriented privacy, respectively. We also discuss a number of important open challenges for future research. Our hope is that this paper sheds some light on a fruitful direction of future research for privacy preservation in WSNs. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is one of the major research areas in computer network field today. The function of WSN in this paper is to provide sensing services in an un-attended harsh environment. Sensed data need to be delivered to the base station and to cope with the network unreliability problem. Few routing protocol takes into consideration of this problem. It is a great challenge of the hierarchical routing protocol to provide network survivability through redundancy features. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) can be effectively used for time-critical sensing applications. UAVs can be used to collect the sensed data from sensors and transfer them to a base station. The real-time transfer of data is highly desired in the time-critical applications. However, the medium access control (MAC) protocols designed for UWSNs so far are primarily focused on the efficient use of UAVs to collect data in the sensing areas. In this paper, we propose an energy-efficient and fast MAC (EF-MAC) protocol in UWSNs for time-critical sensing applications. EF-MAC adopts carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) for the registration of sensor nodes with a UAV and time division multiple access (TDMA) with variable slot time for the transmission of collected data. The UAV is equipped with two transceivers to minimize both energy consumption and delay in air-to-ground communication. The energy consumption and delay are formally analyzed and the performance of EF-MAC is evaluated via extensive simulation. Integrated systems based on wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with electric propulsion are emerging as state-of-the-art solutions for large scale monitoring. Main advances stemming both from complex system architectures as well as powerful embedded computing and communication platforms, advanced sensing and networking protocols have been leveraged to prove the viability of this concept. The design of suitable algorithms for data processing, communication and control across previously disparate domains has thus currently become an intensive area of interdisciplinary research. The paper was focused on the collaborative aspects of UAV–WSN systems and the reference papers were analyzed from this point of view, on each functional module. The paper offers a timely review of recent advances in this area of critical interest with focus on a comparative perspective across multiple recent theoretical and applied contributions. A systematic approach is carried out in order to structure a unitary from conceptual design towards key implementation aspects. Focus areas are identified and discussed such as distributed data processing algorithms, hierarchical multi-protocol networking aspects and high level WSN–constrained UAV-control. Presently, the Internet of Things (IoT) concept involves a scattered collection of different multipurpose sensor networks that capture information, which is further processed and used in applications such as smart cities. These networks can send large amounts of information in a fairly efficient but insecure wireless environment. Energy consumption is a key aspect of sensor networks since most of the time, they are battery powered and placed in not easily accessible locations. Therefore, and regardless of the final application, wireless sensor networks require a careful energy consumption analysis that allows selection of the best operating protocol and energy optimization scheme. In this paper, a set of performance metrics is defined to objectively compare different kinds of protocols. Four of the most popular IoT protocols are selected: Zigbee, LoRa, Bluethooth, and WiFi. To test and compare their performance, multiple sensors are placed at different points of a university campus to create a network that can accurately simulate a smart city. Currently, there is an increasing interest in the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags which incorporate passive or battery-less sensors. These systems are known as computational RFID (CRFID). Several CRFID tags together with a reader set up an RFID sensor network. The reader powers up the tags' microcontroller and their attached sensor using radio frequency waves, and tags backscatter, not only their EPC code but also the value of those sensors. The current standard for interrogating these CRFID tags is the EPC global Class 1 Generation 2 (EPC C1G2). When several tags are located inside the reader interrogation area, the EPC C1G2 results in very poor performance to obtain sensor data values. To solve this problem, a novel protocol called Sensor Frmed Slotted Aloha (sFSA) for streaming sensor data dealing with the tag collisions is presented. The proposed protocol increases the Sensor Read Rate (SRR), defined as the number of sensor data reads per second, compared to the standard. Additionally, this paper presents a prototype of an RFID sensor network to compare the proposed sFSA with the standard, increasing the SRR by more than five times on average.
