The biodiesel obtained by BACS and biodiesel obtained by KOH were compared using international biodiesel standards. An activated sulfonated biochar with a sulfonation percentage of 15.23% was successfully obtained, providing a higher FAME conversion percentage than the KOH catalyst. During the characterization of the biodiesel obtained with both catalysts, it was found that KOH meets the specified standards, while the BACS catalyst requires variations in reaction temperature or blending with diesel to comply with the biodiesel characteristics. Additionally, it was observed that the coconut mesocarp-based catalyst showed a 2.78% reduction after the first working cycle, allowing for its reuse without the need for a new sulfonation process. Background: Following an extensive examination of various biofiltration packing materials within a typical bioreactor (a biofilter) is aiming to remove hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the raw biogas. Methods: Both biochar (pre- and post-pyrolysis at 400, 500, and 600 °C) and cellular concrete (CLC) waste, representing organic and inorganic packing materials, respectively, displayed remarkable removal efficiency (RE) performance under dynamic conditions. Nevertheless, the physical and chemical properties of these packing materials play a crucial role in absorbing and trapping H2S for further filtration from the raw biogas. Key evaluations encompass chemical compositions, porosity, and specific surface area, aligning with contemporary research methodologies (e.g., XRF, Walkley-black, Kjeldahl, BET, T-plot), as analyzed in this study. Results: Subsequently, the modification of these physicochemical properties aimed to demonstrate continued interactions of iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3) with H2S for chemical modification of CLC waste, and enhance the specific surface area of biochar from 12, 22, and 24 m2/g to 235, 433, 475 m2/g, and for porosity from 0.01, 0.42, and 0.025 cm3/g to 0.096, 4, 0.24 cm3/g, respectively, for physical modification of biochar samples after pyrolysis at 400, 500, and 600 °C. Conclusion: In the end, improving the possibility of getting better RE from a laboratory-scale biofilter is possible by modification of the most effective physical (adding KOH to biochar and increasing porosity by 9 times, specific surface area by 19 times) and chemical (adding Fe2O3 to CLC waste) properties of the environment-friendly packing materials.

Environmental restoration and sustainable energy solutions require effective management and utilization of agricultural crop residues to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Biowastes are a valuable resource that can be converted into biofuels and their byproducts, solving the energy crisis and reducing environmental impact. In this study, teff husk, primarily generated in Ethiopia during the production of teff within the agro-industrial sector, is used as a feedstock for slow pyrolysis. Ethiopia generates an estimated annual production of over 1.75 million tons of teff husk, a significant portion of which is incinerated, resulting in significant pollution of the environment. This study focuses on assessing teff husk as a potential material for slow pyrolysis, a crucial stage in biochar production, to tap into its biochar-producing potential. To identify the composition of biomass, the teff husk underwent an initial analysis using thermogravimetry. The significant presence of fixed carbon indicates that teff husk is a viable candidate for pyrolytic conversion into biochar particles. The process of slow pyrolysis took place at three temperatures—specifically, 400, 450, and 500 °C. The maximum biochar yield was achieved by optimizing slow pyrolysis parameters including reaction time, temperature, and heating rate. The optimized reaction time, temperature, and heating rate of 120 min, 400 °C, and 4.2 °C/min, respectively, resulted in the highest biochar yield of 43.4 wt.%. Furthermore, biochar's physicochemical, SEM-EDX, FTIR, and TGA characterization were performed. As the temperature of biochar increases, its carbon content and thermal stability increases as well. The production of biofuels and biochar through pyrolysis is a promising avenue for sustainable energy generation and waste management. However, this process can inadvertently release various air pollutants into the atmosphere, potentially compromising its environmental benefits. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the gas pollutants associated with pyrolysis for biofuel and biochar production, as well as different variables affecting gas emissions. Key pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx) have been discussed in terms of their formations and emissions during pyrolysis processes. Furthermore, major factors influencing pollutant emissions, including feedstock composition, pyrolysis conditions, and combustion technologies have been examined with up-to-date examples. The review highlights the significance of emission control strategies, such as advanced reactor design, catalyst utilization, and the integration of realtime monitoring systems, in mitigating air pollution from pyrolysis processes. By shedding light on the environmental challenges associated with pyrolysis-based biofuel and biochar production, this article aims to encourage the development of cleaner and more sustainable approaches to harness the potential of solid waste conversion technologies. Abstract This study aimed to optimize the production of bio-oil from Leucaena leucocephala wood using a fluidized bed reactor. Response surface methodology was used to optimize the fast pyrolysis through three operational parameters: pyrolysis temperature, nitrogen flow rate, and temperature of the first condensation stage. The optimum conditions obtained for bio-oil production were 500 °C, 26.4 L min–1, that is, about 3.3 times the minimum fluidization flow, and 80 °C, respectively. The bio-oil obtained under optimum conditions was of good quality and did not require further treatment. Physical properties of the bio-oil were analysed according to ASTM D7544-12. In addition, the chemical composition of the non-condensed gases and bio-oil were identified using GC–MS. The non-condensed gases were found to contain mainly ketones and lignin derivatives, while the bio-oil contained cyclic ketones, alcohol ethers, aromatic alcohols, and lignin derivatives. The study found that increasing the pyrolysis temperature did not significantly increase the yield of H2 and CO for syngas production. Regarding the solid obtained, a large amount of unreacted material (66.7 wt.%) is generated at 400 °C, and as the temperature is increased, a high-quality biochar is obtained.

The global annual production of rice is over 750 million tons, and generates a huge amount of biomass waste, such as straw, husk, and bran, making rice waste an ideal feedstock for biomass conversion industries. This review focuses on the current progress in the transformation of rice waste into valuable products, including biochar, (liquid and gaseous) biofuels, valuable chemicals (sugars, furan derivatives, organic acids, and aromatic hydrocarbons), and carbon/silicon-based catalysts and catalyst supports. The challenges and future prospectives are highlighted to guide future studies in rice waste valorization for sustainable production of fuels and chemicals.

Differences in feedstock and processing result in differentiated products which impact their values in different soil conditions. Despite the enormous potential, biochars have not been widely used. This paper overviews the benefits and potential demand for biochar and features of supply chain, and identifies opportunities for viable introduction of biochars. The value of biochars should be evaluated as a part of the pyrolysis system that coproduces biochars and biofuels. Biochars can improve agricultural productivity and soil functioning and contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration. Furthermore, it can provide extra benefit by contributing to fire prevention. The cost of biochar system depends on the costs of feedstock acquisition, transportation, and processing. Biochar is most likely to be adopted in locations with marginal land and high‐value crop, and near low‐cost feedstock sources. The adoption of biochar can be enhanced by compensation for carbon sequestration, further investment in research, and learning of producers to enhance efficiency of the supply chain.

Walnut, pistachio, and peanut nutshells were treated by pyrolysis to biochar and analyzed for their possible usage as fuels or soil fertilizers. All the samples were pyrolyzed to five different temperatures, i.e., 250 °C, 300 °C, 350 °C, 450 °C, and 550 °C. Proximate and elemental analyses were carried out for all the samples, as well as calorific value and stoichiometric analysis. For sample usage as a soil amendment, phytotoxicity testing was performed and the content of phenolics, flavonoids, tannin, juglone, and antioxidant activity were determined. To characterize the chemical composition of walnut, pistachio, and peanut shells, lignin, cellulose, holocellulose, hemicellulose, and extractives were determined. As a result, it was found that walnut shells and pistachio shells are best pyrolyzed at the temperature of 300 °C and peanut shells at the temperature of 550 °C for their use as alternative fuels. The highest measured net calorific value was in pistachio shells, which were biochar pyrolyzed at 550 °C, of 31.35 MJ kg−1. On the other hand, walnut biochar pyrolyzed at 550 °C had the highest ash share of 10.12% wt. For their use as soil fertilizers, peanut shells were the most suitable when pyrolyzed at 300 °C, walnut shells at 300 and 350 °C, and pistachio shells at 350 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Crop residues are a major component of lignocellulosic biomass waste generated from the agriculture sector. Improper management of these wastes pollutes the environment, contaminates water bodies, and constitutes hazards to human health. The conversion of crop residues to biochar is an ecologically benign and sustainable management strategy for waste management. This review provides a novel insight into the techniques of converting various classes of crop residues such as straws, peels, bagasse, husks, shells, cobs, and stubbles to biochar for biofuel production. The updated information on the description, benefits, and drawbacks of various biochar production techniques including traditional, modern, and novel techniques are also surveyed. The study concluded on the effectiveness of biochar derived from crop residues as sustainable catalysts or support catalysts for biodiesel, biohydrogen, and biomethane production. The deployment of biochar derived from crop residue is cost-effective, eco-friendly, and contributes to environmental sustainability. More multidisciplinary investigations are required to harness the benefits derivable from the application of biochar for biofuel synthesis and confront the challenges associated with the biochar generation process to guarantee the intensification of biofuel production. The use of innovative technologies should be encouraged to guide future research toward ensuring cleaner, cost-effective, and ecological biochar utilization for biofuel production.

Two microalgae species were pyrolysed to produce bio-oil and biochar at various temperatures to investigate the trade-off between the energy used in the pyrolysis and the energy released upon combustion. Chlorella vulgaris (a freshwater microalga) and Nannochloropsis oculata (a marine microalga) were chosen as representatives of commonly used freshwater and marine microalgae species. The Chlorella used here was high-protein (49.2%), low lipid (5.9%) and low ash (5.2%) content, with a higher heating value (HHV) of 20.9 MJkg−1. The Nannochloropsis was lower in protein (26.8%) but higher in lipids (12.3%) and ash (15.9%), with a HHV of 15.5 MJkg−1. The highest energy efficiency was for pyrolysis of Nannochloropsis at 400 °C, in terms of both bio-oil (58.1%) and biochar (52.7%) production. The highest efficiencies of Chlorella vulgaris were 42.4% for bio-oil at 500 oC and 45.2% for biochar at 400 °C. This work shows that, beyond Nannochloropsis’ advantage of not requiring freshwater for cultivation, it is also more energy efficient.

Abstract Background Economic benefit has been analyzed for the yield of farming products when designing a farming system, while waste treatment also generates profitable energy products for this system. The economic factor is decisive in decision-making for applying waste treatment solutions for a small-scale farming system. A household farming system in the Mekong Delta generates many kinds of organic wastes, but most of the agricultural waste resources are disposed of into the environment. Methods This study approaches an analysis of economic–environmental–energy (EEE) efficiency for waste treatment of an integrated livestock-orchard (LO) system on a household scale in the Mekong Delta. This novel analysis method is based on the energy content of biomass and its cost. The EEE efficiency is optimized to gain objective functions regarding energy yield efficiency, system profit, and CO2 sequestration for the treatment model. The algorithms are built for optimizing these objective functions. Results The optimization results show the treatment model of pyrolysis and pelleting gain all the objective functions with high efficiency. The model is efficiently applied for the LO system that generates more than 100 kg of orchard residues and 3000 kg of pig manure. The system with a charcoal oven and pellet machine is capable to gain energy efficiency due to its potential biofuel products, such as biochars and pellet products. A treatment model of composting, pyrolysis, and pelleting gives the best performance of overall EEE efficiency. Conclusions This work has proven economic benefits from integrating biogas tank, charcoal oven, and pellet machine in an integrated LO system. The system contributes not only for reducing CO2 emissions but also for supplementing secondary renewable bioenergy, as well as for increasing incomes and thus supporting livelihoods for the local farming households.

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and the destruction wrought by global warming caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, the search for renewable energy sources has become a major global concern. This study aimed to assess the bio-oil production from teff husk via slow pyrolysis process. The pyrolysis of teff husk took place in a batch reactor at a temperature between 400 °C and 500 °C with a 120 min retention time. At 450 °C, the pyrolysis process produced 32.96 wt.% of optimum bio-oil yield and had a HHV of 25.32 MJ/kg. TGA, FTIR, and SEM-EDX were used to analyze the produced bio-oil to investigate its thermal decomposition, functional groups, and surface morphology with its elemental composition, respectively. Alcohols, aromatic, phenols, alkanes, esters, and ethers were the primary compounds of the bio-oil produced by the slow pyrolysis of teff husk. The HHV of the biochar ranged from 21.22 to 22.85 MJ/kg. As a result, teff husk can be used to make biofuel; however, further bio-oil upgrading is needed for the produced teff husk bio-oil to be used effectively and commercially. Overall, the slow pyrolysis of teff husk offers a chance to produce biofuels with enhanced value that can be used for additional purposes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tea waste as a potential biofuel and bio fertilizer was analyzed. Samples were collected from various tea species and torrefied to five different temperatures. All samples were analyzed for their proximal composition and calorific value. From the results, stoichiometric properties were calculated. A phytotoxicity test was performed, and the germination index was measured. Tea waste torrefied at 350 °C may be suitable biofuel reaching the calorific value of 25–27 MJ kg−1, but with quite a high share of ash, up to 10%, which makes its use technically challenging and may lead to operating issues in a combustion chamber. The same biochar may be a suitable fertilizer for increasing the germination index, therefore, applicable to the soil. The non-torrefied sample and the sample treated at 250 °C are not suitable as fertilizers for being toxic. The total phenolic content in waste black tea was reduced from 41.26 to 0.21 mg g−1, depending on the torrefaction temperature. The total flavonoid content was also reduced from 60.49 to 0.5 mg g−1. The total antioxidant activity in the non-torrefied sample was 144 mg g−1, and after torrefaction at 550 °C, it was 0.82 mg g−1. The results showed that black tea waste residues have the potential for further use, for example, in agriculture as a soil amendment or as a potential biofuel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lignocellulosic biomass is an excellent alternative of fossil source because it is low-cost, plentiful and environmentally friendly, and it can be transformed into biogas, bio-oil and biochar through pyrolysis; thereby, the three types of pyrolytic products can be upgraded or improved to satisfy the standard of biofuel, chemicals and energy materials for industries. The bio-oil derived from direct pyrolysis shows some disadvantages: high contents of oxygenates, water and acids, easy-aging and so forth, which restrict the large-scale application and commercialization of bio-oil. Catalytic pyrolysis favors the refinement of bio-oil through deoxygenation, cracking, decarboxylation, decarbonylation reactions and so on, which could occur on the specified reaction sites. Therefore, the catalytic pyrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass is a promising approach for the production of high quality and renewable biofuels. This review gives information about the factors which might determine the catalytic pyrolysis output, including the properties of biomass, operational parameters of catalytic pyrolysis and different types of pyrolysis equipment. Catalysts used in recent research studies aiming to explore the catalytic pyrolysis conversion of biomass to high quality bio-oil or chemicals are discussed, and the current challenges and future perspectives for biomass catalytic pyrolysis are highlighted for further comprehension. Background: Food wastes are an abundant resource that can be effectively valorised by hydrothermal liquefaction to produce bio-fuels. The objective of the European project WASTE2ROAD is to demonstrate the complete value chain from waste collection to engine tests. The principle of hydrothermal liquefaction is well known but there are still many factors that make the science very empirical. Most experiments in the literature are performed on batch reactors. Comparison of results from batch reactors with experiments with continuous reactors are rare in the literature. Methods: Various food wastes were transformed by hydrothermal liquefaction. The resources used and the products from the experiments have been extensively analysed. Two different experimental reactors have been used, a batch reactor and a continuous reactor. This paper presents a dataset of fully documented experiments performed in this project, on food wastes with different compositions, conditions and solvents. The data set is extended with data from the literature. The data was analysed using machine learning analysis and regression techniques. Results: This paper presents experimental results on various food wastes as well as modelling and analysis with machine learning algorithms. The experimental results were used to attempt to establish a link between batch and continuous experiments. The molecular weight of bio-oil from continuous experiments appear higher than that of batch experiments. This may be due to the configuration of our reactor. Conclusions: This paper shows how the use of regression models help with understanding the results, and the importance of process variables and resource composition. A novel data analysis technique gives an insight on the accuracy that can be obtained from these models.

Solar energy and biomass produce energy, which is sustainable and does not harm our environment. This characteristic of the two-energy feedstock is harnessed using the pyrolysis method to produce liquid and gaseous fuel that is transportable while bio-char regarded as a by-product has found usefulness in soil amendments. Solar-biomass pyrolysis technology combines these two low-density energy feedstock to produce high energy density fuel. The effectiveness of this process depends not only on the feedstock or reaction dynamics but also on the solar-thermal systems and reactor configuration. This review addressed the benefits of solar-biomass pyrolysis, available optical concentrating device, conceptual heating modes, the existing configuration of solar-thermal and reactor orientations, and some basic model equations applied in solar biomass pyrolysis.

Walnut, pistachio, and peanut nutshells were treated by pyrolysis to biochar and analyzed for their possible usage as fuels or soil fertilizers. All the samples were pyrolyzed to five different temperatures, i.e., 250 °C, 300 °C, 350 °C, 450 °C, and 550 °C. Proximate and elemental analyses were carried out for all the samples, as well as calorific value and stoichiometric analysis. For sample usage as a soil amendment, phytotoxicity testing was performed and the content of phenolics, flavonoids, tannin, juglone, and antioxidant activity were determined. To characterize the chemical composition of walnut, pistachio, and peanut shells, lignin, cellulose, holocellulose, hemicellulose, and extractives were determined. As a result, it was found that walnut shells and pistachio shells are best pyrolyzed at the temperature of 300 °C and peanut shells at the temperature of 550 °C for their use as alternative fuels. The highest measured net calorific value was in pistachio shells, which were biochar pyrolyzed at 550 °C, of 31.35 MJ kg−1. On the other hand, walnut biochar pyrolyzed at 550 °C had the highest ash share of 10.12% wt. For their use as soil fertilizers, peanut shells were the most suitable when pyrolyzed at 300 °C, walnut shells at 300 and 350 °C, and pistachio shells at 350 °C.

Abstract Harvesting corn (Zea mays L.) stover for use as bioenergy feedstock may provide short‐term economic benefits and perhaps improve grain yield in continuous corn systems, but excessive stover removal may lead to long‐term depletion of soil C stocks. To better quantify the impacts of stover harvest on the soil C balance, we investigated CO2 fluxes under three harvest treatments (none, moderate, and high) in three continuous corn systems: (a) no tillage and no biochar applications, (b) chisel plowing with biochar amendments, and (c) chisel plowing without biochar amendments were quantified. We sampled static chambers 14, 13, and 15 times in 2010, 2011, and 2012, respectively, and the measurements were used to calibrate the Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator model. Although CO2‐C emissions did not differ among the three systems, both moderate (approximately 30%) and high (approximately 60%) stover removal rates reduced simulated CO2‐C emissions by nearly 10% and more than 22%, respectively. Despite these reductions in CO2 flux, the sum of CO2‐C and stover C exceeded CO2‐C losses in those plots without stover removal. This finding suggested soil C depletion was occurring for the soil and crop management practices used, even though depletion was not evident after 3 years. Application of biochar increased soil C levels, suggesting it may be able to offset some C losses. We conclude that for sustainable, highly productive agroecosystems that include stover harvest, all agronomic practices must be optimized to minimize C losses and maintain soil quality.

Abstract Background While keeping in view various aspects of energy demand, quest for the renewable energy sources is utmost. Biomass has shown great potential as green energy source with supply of approximately 14% of world total energy demand, and great source of carbon capture. It is abundant in various forms including agricultural, forestry residues, and unwanted plants (weeds). The rapid growth of weeds not only affects the yield of the crop, but also has strong consequences on the environment. These weeds can grow with minimum nutrient input requirements, have strong ability to grow at various soil and climate environments with high value of cellulose, thus can be valuable source of energy production. Results Parthenium hysterophorus L. and Cannabis sativa L. have been employed for the production of biofuels (biogas, biodiesel and biochar) through nano-catalytic gasification by employing Co and Ni as nanocatalysts. Nanocatalysts were synthesized through well-established sol–gel method. SEM study confirms the spherical morphology of the nanocatalysts with size distribution of 20–50 nm. XRD measurements reveal that fabricated nanocatalysts have pure standard crystal structure without impurity. During gasification of Cannabis sativa L., we have extracted the 53.33% of oil, 34.66% of biochar and 12% gas whereas in the case of Parthenium hysterophorus L. 44% oil, 38.36% biochar and 17.66% of gas was measured. Electrical conductivity in biochar of Cannabis sativa L. and Parthenium hysterophorus L. was observed 0.4 dSm−1 and 0.39 dSm−1, respectively. Conclusion Present study presents the conversion of unwanted plants Parthenium hysterophorus L. and Cannabis sativa L. weeds to biofuels. Nanocatalysts help to enhance the conversion of biomass to biofuel due to large surface reactivity. Our findings suggest potential utilization of unwanted plants for biofuel production, which can help to share the burden of energy demand. Biochar produced during gasification can replace chemical fertilizers for soil remediation and to enhance the crop productivity.

Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and the destruction wrought by global warming caused by the combustion of fossil fuels, the search for renewable energy sources has become a major global concern. This study aimed to assess the bio-oil production from teff husk via slow pyrolysis process. The pyrolysis of teff husk took place in a batch reactor at a temperature between 400 °C and 500 °C with a 120 min retention time. At 450 °C, the pyrolysis process produced 32.96 wt.% of optimum bio-oil yield and had a HHV of 25.32 MJ/kg. TGA, FTIR, and SEM-EDX were used to analyze the produced bio-oil to investigate its thermal decomposition, functional groups, and surface morphology with its elemental composition, respectively. Alcohols, aromatic, phenols, alkanes, esters, and ethers were the primary compounds of the bio-oil produced by the slow pyrolysis of teff husk. The HHV of the biochar ranged from 21.22 to 22.85 MJ/kg. As a result, teff husk can be used to make biofuel; however, further bio-oil upgrading is needed for the produced teff husk bio-oil to be used effectively and commercially. Overall, the slow pyrolysis of teff husk offers a chance to produce biofuels with enhanced value that can be used for additional purposes.

Tea waste as a potential biofuel and bio fertilizer was analyzed. Samples were collected from various tea species and torrefied to five different temperatures. All samples were analyzed for their proximal composition and calorific value. From the results, stoichiometric properties were calculated. A phytotoxicity test was performed, and the germination index was measured. Tea waste torrefied at 350 °C may be suitable biofuel reaching the calorific value of 25–27 MJ kg−1, but with quite a high share of ash, up to 10%, which makes its use technically challenging and may lead to operating issues in a combustion chamber. The same biochar may be a suitable fertilizer for increasing the germination index, therefore, applicable to the soil. The non-torrefied sample and the sample treated at 250 °C are not suitable as fertilizers for being toxic. The total phenolic content in waste black tea was reduced from 41.26 to 0.21 mg g−1, depending on the torrefaction temperature. The total flavonoid content was also reduced from 60.49 to 0.5 mg g−1. The total antioxidant activity in the non-torrefied sample was 144 mg g−1, and after torrefaction at 550 °C, it was 0.82 mg g−1. The results showed that black tea waste residues have the potential for further use, for example, in agriculture as a soil amendment or as a potential biofuel.

Solar energy and biomass produce energy, which is sustainable and does not harm our environment. This characteristic of the two-energy feedstock is harnessed using the pyrolysis method to produce liquid and gaseous fuel that is transportable while bio-char regarded as a by-product has found usefulness in soil amendments. Solar-biomass pyrolysis technology combines these two low-density energy feedstock to produce high energy density fuel. The effectiveness of this process depends not only on the feedstock or reaction dynamics but also on the solar-thermal systems and reactor configuration. This review addressed the benefits of solar-biomass pyrolysis, available optical concentrating device, conceptual heating modes, the existing configuration of solar-thermal and reactor orientations, and some basic model equations applied in solar biomass pyrolysis. Enormous annual sewage sludge (SS) volumes pose global environmental challenges owing to contamination and significant greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we investigated the economic viability of co-pyrolyzing SS and biomass waste to produce biofuels (bio-oil and gas) and biochar. Net present worth (NPW) analysis, the sale product break-even price, and sludge handling price (SHP) were used to determine the profitability of co-pyrolysis compared with SS pyrolysis alone and conventional treatment methods. In this study, the sale prices of biochar based on quality (i.e., stability, carbon sequestration effectiveness, and heavy metal content) were estimated to be 2.24, 1.44, and 0.98 CAD/kg for high-, medium-, and low-grade biochar. The bio-oil prices, estimated based on the higher heating values of bio-oil and diesel, ranged from 0.80 to 1.22 CAD/kg. Sawdust (SD) and wheat straw (WS) were the chosen co-pyrolysis feedstocks, with four mixing ratios (20, 40, 60, and 80 wt%). Economically, SD (40 wt% mixing ratio) co-pyrolysis achieved the best performance, with a maximum NPW of 8.71 million CAD. SD single and co-pyrolysis were the only profitable scenarios. Moreover, SS single pyrolysis and WS co-pyrolysis exhibited higher profitability than conventional SS treatment methods, with SHPs of 65 and 40 CAD/1000 kg dry sludge, respectively. Sensitivity analysis highlighted the dependence of economic performance on biochar and bio-oil market value. This study offers the first economic analysis of this approach and enhances our understanding of the potential of co-pyrolysis for biofuel and biochar production, providing innovative solutions for the environmental challenges of SS disposal. In recent years, a new class of superior heterogeneous acid catalyst for biodiesel production has emerged. These catalysts offer advantages over their predecessors such as high surface area, elevated acid site density, enhanced catalyst activity, good operation stability and relevant economic affordability in an environmentally friendly frame. This review was concerned with carbon-based solid acid (CBAS) catalysts derived from both carbohydrate and pyrolysis products. A series of CBASs with various origins such as D-glucose, sucrose, starch, cellulose and vegetable oil asphalt, converted to char and sulphonated, have been explored as potential heterogeneous catalysts. Catalyst preparation and synthesis methods were briefly summarized. Catalyst characterization and performance for biofuels related reactions were elucidated, identifying potential research applications. Biochar is widely used for various environmental remediation strategies such as soil amendment because of its intrinsic carbon negativity and porosity. To determine an effective method for modification of the porosity and morphology of biochar and establishment of a more sustainable pyrolysis platform for biomass valorization, this study used CO 2 as a reactive gas medium in the biomass pyrolysis process. This study placed emphasis on elucidating the role of CO 2 in the production of biochar from different types of biomass, such as cellulose, xylan, lignin, grass, and oak wood. The surface area and porosity of biochar were strongly related to the type of biomass. Under comparable pyrolysis conditions, the surface area of biochar decreased in the following order: cellulose > xylan > lignin ∼ oak wood > grass. The use of CO 2 as the gas medium in biomass pyrolysis affected the surface area and porosity of biochar samples derived from biomass feedstock. For instance, the surface area and total pore volume of the oak-wood-derived biochar produced in the CO 2 environment were twice those produced in the N 2 environment. Given that the increases in the biochar surface area and porosity were attributed to the enhanced release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from biomass, CO 2 may have enhanced VOC release (removal) during pyrolysis. Catalytic esterification of fatty acid with methanol, alkylation of 4-ethylphenol with benzyl alcohol as well as 2-methylfuran with cyclopentanone are of great significant for the production of biofuels. However, the in-situ produced water decreases the acidity of catalyst and induces side reaction, leading to an unsatisfactory catalytic activity and selectivity. Herein, a novel biochar-based hydrophobic benzenesulfonic acid is prepared for the first time by one-pot sulfonation method of biochar with 4-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid. It has a large specific surface area of 100-400 m2/g, a hydrophobicity with H 2 O contact angle higher than 110° and a high concentration of sulfonic acid over 1.0 mmol/g. In the esterification reaction of fatty acid with methanol for synthesis of biodiesel, it shows a higher conversion of 96.0% than sulfonic acid resin amberlyst-15 (86.7%) and traditional sulfonated biochar-SO 3 H (28.0%). In the alkylation reaction of 4-ethylphenol with phenylmethanol/2-methylfuran with cyclopentanone for high-density bicyclic/monocyclic biofuel, its catalytic efficiency with target product yields are 69.4% and 70.5% respectively, which are also higher than that of amberlyst-15 (74.3%, 49.4%) and biochar-SO 3 H (14.7%, 13.0%). Furthermore, the catalyst is more stable than biochar-SO 3 H. The preparation of hydrophobic biochar-based sulfonic acid catalysts not only opens a new way for high-value utilization of biochar, but also provides a novel efficient catalyst in many acid-catalyzed transformation reactions that the product H 2 O causes deleterious effects. Abstract This work investigated the optimization of process parameters in the upgrading of the oil extracted from Scenedesmus obliquus microalgae using a novel nickel-impregnated biochar catalyst. The effects of temperature, dodecane-to-oil mass ratio and pressure on the upgraded liquid-phase biofuel yield were evaluated and optimized by central composite design of the response surface methodology (RSM). The model equation generated from RSM showed that dodecane-to-oil mass ratio and pressure, as well as the quadratic effects of all the three factors, were significant model terms in predicting the yield of upgraded liquid-phase biofuel. Maximum liquid biofuel yield was attained at 246.89 °C, 3.72 (w/w) dodecane-to-oil mass ratio, 3.84 MPa hydrogen pressure and 6 h processing time. Validation runs resulted in an upgraded biofuel yield of 69.4%, which was in close agreement with predicted values generated by RSM. The upgraded biofuel comprised of 100% green liquid hydrocarbons containing 94% alkanes and 6% alkenes. Its main fuel properties, such as heating value (43.78 MJ kg−1), elemental composition, density, and viscosity, exceeded those of the fatty acid methyl ester standard and were found comparable to those of petroleum diesel. More importantly, the results of the ultimate analysis and confirmed by the findings from Fourier transform infrared and gas chromatography – mass spectroscopy analyses, showed significantly low oxygen and nitrogen content and absence of sulfur in the upgraded biofuel. This study investigated the behavior of two types of modified biochar (functional and iron composite biochars) as a catalyst regarding their surface chemistry and morphological properties and their effects on bio-product derived from pyrolysis of Cladophora glomerata (C. glomerata) macroalagae. Two catalytic pyrolysis experiments were conducted in 25 mL slow pyrolysis reactor in the presence of biochar-based catalysts at the temperature of 500 °C. For functional biochar, no clear effect on biogas production was observed, whereas iron composite biochar increased the hydrogen content by 7.99 mml/g algae. Iron composite biochar with a 3D network structure demonstrated remarkable catalytic behaviors (especially toward hydrogen production) due to its wonderful surface area, high dispersion of iron particles and particular structures and compositions. The biochar derived marine biomass and treatment process developed here could provide a promising path for the low-cost, efficient, renewable and environmental friendly catalysts. Abstract A comparative techno-economic analysis of two different thermochemical biomass conversion pathways was conducted to examine the effects of fuel price and other variables on project financial performance. Monte Carlo simulation was used to quantify the effects of uncertainty and volatility of ten critical variables: biofuel, biochar and feedstock prices, discount rate, capital investment, labor cost, loan terms, feedstock drying, and biofuel and biochar conversion rates. Market prices for biofuel and biochar have the largest impact on net present value (NPV) of any variable considered, due in part to the high levels of uncertainty associated with future prices of both. Across the ranges of input values for these variables in simulation analysis, hearth-based pyrolysis biochar production had the highest likelihood of profitability with a mean NPV of $41.5 million and only 20% of outcomes resulting in a net loss, while 68% of outcomes for auger-based biochar-biofuel coproduction represented a financial loss, including a mean NPV of -$24.2 million. However, when additional revenue from Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) credits generated by biofuel production is considered, financial outcomes of biochar-biofuel coproduction improve to 50% likelihood of experiencing a net loss. Findings of the very strong impact of market prices on financial outcomes, relative to other important technical and economic variables, can inform effective targeting of future renewable energy policy, as well as the design of future techno-economic analyses, which do not currently focus on the effect of market prices on profitability. Nowadays the main sources of energy are petroleum, coal, and natural gas. However, these fossil sources are not reproduced in nature; on a human timescale their reserves are exhausted permanently and run down. Considerable attention in recent years has been given to plant biomass, which in contrast to the fossil sources is continuously renewed in nature. In this critical review the use of non-edible plant biomass for production of various kinds of biofuels is considered. To generate energy, plant biomass either can be burned directly or it can be used after its conversion into carbonized solid fuel (e.g. biochar), liquid fuels (bioethanol, biodiesel, bio-oil), or gases (biogas). Among various biofuels, production of bioethanol has potential to be the most attractive if recent technological advances become implemented, such that the co-production of ethanol and valuable byproducts can be combined together with recycling of solid and liquid wastes. A comparative analysis of energetic potential of biomass and various kinds of biofuels revealed that the most efficient way to produce energy is by direct burning of the plant biomass in a pelletized form, while the burning of such amount of the solid, liquid, or gaseous biofuel, which can be obtained from the plant material, gives a much smaller energetic effect. Novel types of pellets, as well as solid/liquid biofuels, having improved fuel characteristics are described.

Pyrolysis is an eco-friendly process to achieve valuable products like bio-oil, char and gases. In the last decades, biochar production from pyrolysis of a wide variety of industrial and agricultural wastes become popular, which can be utilized as adsorbent instead of the expensive activated carbons. In this study, cherry pulp was pyrolyzed in a fixed bed tubular reactor at five different temperatures (400, 500,550, 600 and 700 °C) and three different heating rates (10, 100 and 200 °C/min) to obtain biochar. Proximate, ultimate, nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, x-ray fluorescence, x-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were performed on cherry pulp and its chars to examine the chemical alterations after the pyrolysis process. Biochar yields were decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature and heating rate, based on experimental results. Porous biochars are carbon rich and includes high potassium content. The aromaticity of biochars increased and O/C mass ratio reduced with an increase in the pyrolysis temperature as a result of the development of compact aromatic structure in char. Pyrolysis provides a promising conversion procedure for the production of high energy density char which has promising applications in existing coal-fired boilers without any upgrading. This indicates the possibility of the application of microalgae as a biological way of remediating contaminated water. Heavy metal resistance quality also allows various microalgal species to contribute in the generation of biofuels like biodiesel and biohydrogen. Many research works have also explored the capacity of microalgae in nanotechnology for the formation of nanoparticles due to its relevant characteristics. Various studies have also revealed that biochar deduced from microalgae or a combination of biochar and microalgae can have wide applications specially in deprivation of heavy metals from an environment. This review focuses on the strategies adopted by microalgae, various transporters involved in the process of tolerating heavy metals and the applications where microalgae can participate owing to its ability to resist metals. Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) was chosen as the woody biomass for the production of charcoal for use in a liquid fuel slurry. Charcoal produced from this biomass resulted in a highly porous structure similar to the parent material. Micronized particles were produced from this charcoal using a multi-step milling process and verified using a scanning electron microscope and laser diffraction system. Charcoal particles greater than 50 µm exhibited long needle shapes much like the parent biomass while particles less than 50 µm were produced with aspect ratios closer to unity. Laser diffraction measurements indicated D10, D50, and D90 values of 4.446 µm, 15.83 µm, and 39.69 µm, respectively. Moisture content, ash content, absolute density, and energy content values were also measured for the charcoal particles produced. The gas analysis revealed that H 2 and CO production was enhanced by 332 and 7,110%, respectively, by applying Fe-impregnated bentonite in pyrolysis of grass cut while untreated bentonite had a limited influence on syngas production. Bio-oil produced from Fe-impregnated bentonite and grass cut (Fe-BG) had more homogenized chemical species in bio-oil as compared to that produced from pyrolysis of grass cut, and contained methyl 1,1-methyl-dodecanoate (C 14 H 28 O 2), one of the major components in biodiesel. The produced biochar had high surface area (69.2 m2 g−1) and possessed Fe0 and graphitic carbon structure, which was deemed to arise from reduction of Fe-oxides by syngas. Biochar also showed high As(V) adsorption capacity. The overall results of this work demonstrated the beneficial utility of Fe-impregnated bentonite in pyrolysis of biomass to improve syngas production as well as the quality of pyrogenic products. Biochar derived from orchid tree leaves is utilised as the fuel of a direct carbon solid oxide fuel cell (DC-SOFC), with yttrium stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as electrolyte and cermet of silver and gadolinium doped ceria (Ag-GDC) as the material of both cathode and anode, operating without any liquid medium or feeding gas. The performance of the DC-SOFC operated on the leaf char is higher than that operated on the best reported carbon fuel for DC-SOFCs, Fe-loaded activated carbon. XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM and EDX are applied to characterize the leaf char. It turns out that the leaf char is with porous structure and there is much Ca along with some K and Mg uniformly distributing in the leaf char. The effects of the naturally existing alkaline earth metal and alkaline metal and their distribution on the performance of the DC-SOFCs operated on the leaf char are analyzed in detail. Lignocellulosic model compounds and aspen wood are processed at supercritical hydrothermal conditions to study and understand feedstock impact on biocrude formation and characteristics. Glucose and xylose demonstrate similar yield of biocrude and biochar, similar biocrude characteristics, and it is hypothesized that reaction mechanisms for the two model compounds are indistinguishable. Glucose and xylose are main sources of substituted cyclopentenones and substantial contributors to oxygenated aromatics mainly in the range of C 6 –C 9 number of carbon atoms, and potential, sustainable biogasoline candidates. Lignin yields predominantly aromatic biocrudes having similar C 6 –C 9 number of carbon atoms. Model mixtures show good predictability in the distribution of substituted cyclopentenones and oxygenated aromatics, but aspen wood-derived biocrude is more aromatic than predicted by model mixtures. The work extends previous work on the understanding of the chemical mechanisms of lignocellulose liquefaction and the biocrude formation. Two different pathways for utilizing Miscanthus giganteus biochar were evaluated, namely, for the production of sustainable solid biofuels and as a precursor of high surface area activated carbons. Biochars were produced through a simple thermochemical conversion method via pyrolysis at 400, 500, 600, and 800 °C. The obtained biochars and raw biomass were characterized in detailed by proximate and ultimate analyses. The thermal behaviour and structural and strength properties were evaluated. The chemical composition (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content) of raw Miscanthus giganteus was investigated. The biochars afforded a sufficient higher heating value (HHV) of up to 32 MJ kg−1. Activated carbon was obtained via chemical activation with KOH at 800 °C. The effect of the pyrolysis temperature on the surface properties of the activated carbons was investigated over a wide temperature range. The resulting activated carbons were characterised by N 2 adsorption–desorption at −196 °C and by determining the pH of aqueous extracts. As a potential application, the obtained activated carbon series was used for the adsorptive removal of isoproturon from aqueous media. The adsorption capacity was as high as 384 mg g−1 and depended on the pore size distribution of the activated carbons. Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) was chosen as the woody biomass for the production of charcoal for use in a liquid fuel slurry. Charcoal produced from this biomass resulted in a highly porous structure similar to the parent material. Micronized particles were produced from this charcoal using a multi-step milling process and verified using a scanning electron microscope and laser diffraction system. Charcoal particles greater than 50 µm exhibited long needle shapes much like the parent biomass while particles less than 50 µm were produced with aspect ratios closer to unity. Laser diffraction measurements indicated D10, D50, and D90 values of 4.446 µm, 15.83 µm, and 39.69 µm, respectively. Moisture content, ash content, absolute density, and energy content values were also measured for the charcoal particles produced. Calculated volumetric energy density values for the charcoal particles exceeded the No. 2 diesel fuel that would be displaced in a liquid fuel slurry.

Nowadays the main sources of energy are petroleum, coal, and natural gas. However, these fossil sources are not reproduced in nature; on a human timescale their reserves are exhausted permanently and run down. Considerable attention in recent years has been given to plant biomass, which in contrast to the fossil sources is continuously renewed in nature. In this critical review the use of non-edible plant biomass for production of various kinds of biofuels is considered. To generate energy, plant biomass either can be burned directly or it can be used after its conversion into carbonized solid fuel (e.g. biochar), liquid fuels (bioethanol, biodiesel, bio-oil), or gases (biogas). Among various biofuels, production of bioethanol has potential to be the most attractive if recent technological advances become implemented, such that the coproduction of ethanol and valuable byproducts can be combined together with recycling of solid and liquid wastes. A comparative analysis of energetic potential of biomass and various kinds of biofuels revealed that the most efficient way to produce energy is by direct burning of the plant biomass in a pelletized form, while the burning of such amount of the solid, liquid, or gaseous biofuel, which can be obtained from the plant material, gives a much smaller energetic effect. Renewable energy sources such as biomass have been proven to be one of the promising sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels. However, using biomass directly as a fuel is less attractive due to its high moisture content, poor grindability, low bulk density, and low energy density nature. Hence biomass can be converted into biochar to overcome these challenges. In this study, biochar was derived from citrus peels biomass by slow pyrolysis over the temperature range of 300–700 °C. The effect of pyrolysis temperature on the quality of citrus peels-derived biochar was examined based on the physical and chemical properties obtained from various analyses. The citrus peels biomass and biochar were characterized by means of higher heating value (HHV) analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM-EDX), Fourier transform infrared ray (FTIR) analysis, proximate and thermogravimetric analysis. Based on the characterization results, the potential usage of the derived biochar as a solid fuel was discussed. Results obtained from the pyrolysis experiments indicated that a lower pyrolysis temperature produced a higher char yield. The carbon content and energy content of biochar were found to be increasing with pyrolysis temperature. Biochar produced at 500 °C presented the best fuel properties by having the highest value of HHV and carbon content. The results from this study provided great insights into biomass waste reutilisation to generate value-added biochar for renewable energy production in Malaysia. Abstract: A partial solution to problems associated with anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions could be the development and deployment of carbon-negative technologies, i.e., producing energy while reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide levels. Biofuels have been considered a possibility but have faced limitations due to competition with food production and GHG emissions through indirect land-use change (ILUC). In this article, we show how emissions from ILUC can potentially be reduced by producing food and bioenergy from biochar amended soils. The possibility of yield improvements from biochar would reduce the land requirement for crop production and thus, lead to a reduction in emissions from ILUC. In our application, biochar and bio-oil are produced via fast pyrolysis of corn stover. Bio-oil is subsequently upgraded into a fuel suitable for use in internal combustion engines. Applying the U.S. regulatory method used to determine biofuel life cycle emissions, our results show that a biochar-induced yield improvement in the U.S. Midwest ranging from 1% to 8% above trend can lead to an ILUC credit between 1.65 and 14.79 t CO2-equivalent ha−1 year−1 when future emissions are assessed over the next 30 years.
