This study examines the hydrodynamic regimes in Shediac Bay, located in New Brunswick, Canada, with a focus on the breach in the Grande-Digue sand spit. The breach, which was developed in the mid-1980s, has raised concerns about its potential impacts on water renewal time and water quality in the inner bay. The aims of this study, using mathematical modeling approaches, were to evaluate the flow regimes passing through the breach and influences on the distribution of dissolved matter, providing insights into whether the breach should be allowed to naturally evolve or be artificially infilled to prevent contaminant stagnancy in the bay. The study considered three simulation scenarios to comprehend the water renewal time and the role of the breach in the environmental management of Shediac Bay. Results indicated that completely closing the breach would significantly increase the water renewal time in the inner bay, although the spatial extent of this increase is limited. However, the study identified some limitations, including the need to better define the concentration limit for considering water as renewed and the lack of consideration of dynamic factors such as wind and wave effects.

Water exchange in lake basins is a very important process in regulating the health of the aquatic environment, e.g., by shaping algal blooms. Thus, knowledge of the process is also required to develop management strategies. The paper presents a dynamic of water renewal time in the Uściwierz chain of lakes, in which the natural hydrological connectivity of the catchment areas has been altered due to human impact. Calculations of water renewal were limited to the part of the lake basin corresponding to the active (dynamic) retention layer. A comparative analysis of the rate of potential water renewal, based on the structure difference index, was used as an indicator of the degree of anthropogenic transformation of water distribution in the lake catchments. The smallest differences in the structure of the water renewal rate between the neighboring lakes in the chain system were observed in the cold period, and the largest differences were observed in the warm period. The results showed that the shorter the timescale (5-day period), the higher the similarity in the structure of the water renewal rate between the lakes. Very large differences between the structure of the potential water renewal rate in Lakes Uściwierz and Bikcze indicated a significant transformation of the water cycle down the lake chain. The water renewal rate proved to be a good indicator of the degree of anthropogenic transformation in the catchments located in close proximity.

The dramatic increase in the number of dams on rivers in recent years have led to a more complicated water circulation mechanism in arid regions, Capturing the impact of dams on water circulation processes is an ongoing challenge in the hydrology field. By utilizing observational isotopic data from water bodies, we conducted a comparative study on the Fyw and MTT in two inland river basins within the arid zone of Central Asia. Research findings suggest that dams amplify the damping effect and phase shift of seasonal fluctuations in river water, which in turn extends the water circulation period within inland river basins. The cascading interception of river water by dams has substantially reduced the proportion of young water (Fyw) in the river and has nearly tripled the mean transit time (MTT) of river water. This work confirms the fact that dams are profoundly influencing the water circulation processes in inland river basins from an isotopic kinetic perspective, and is useful for understanding the mechanisms driving water circulation times arid areas. The Mar Menor lagoon has been subjected to high anthropogenic pressures. Among them, in the early 1970s, dredging and enlargement of one of the inlets to make a navigable channel has had strong consequences on the hydrology, ecology, and fisheries of the lagoon. In recent years, changes in agricultural practices have induced an eutrophication process, leading to loss of water quality. As a solution, some management proposals have included dredging of the inlets in order to increase the water renewal. However, these proposals did not take into account the negative effects of previous experiences nor the consequences on environmental conditions of the lagoon and therefore on biological processes. The purpose of this work is to assess the effect that proposed mitigation measures, could have on the hydrodynamic conditions and discuss its possible ecological consequences. A three-dimensional (3D) numerical model has been used to simulate the lagoon under different dredging scenarios, covering different dredging depths and extensions. The simulated current fields and fluxes through the inlets, as well as water renewal times have been compared for the different scenarios. It is found that some of the considered scenarios take the system beyond the threshold of sustainability, where the modified current dynamics could affect sediment transport, beach dynamics and fishing capacities in a significant way. Water exchange with the Mediterranean is also strongly affected, with consequences for species connectivity, and a homogenization of the water renewal times that could lead to loss of ecosystem heterogeneity and structural complexity. The study demonstrates the utility of numerical models as effective tools for the management of coastal areas.

The hypothesis that local hypoxia and chlorophyll concentration are spatially tethered to local, sediment-driven nutrient release was examined in a small, nutrient-impacted estuary in the Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada. Sediment reactor core samples were taken at 10 locations between 0.25 and 100% of the estuary area in spring and fall (2019) and used to estimate nitrogen and phosphate flux. Sediment organic matter, carbonate, percent nitrogen, percent carbon, δ13C, and δ15N were measured from the reactor core stations. Oxygen was recorded continually using oxygen loggers while chlorophyll and salinity were measured bi-weekly. A hydrodynamic model was used to determine water renewal time at each station. The most severe eutrophication effects were in the upper one-fifth of the estuary. There were strong local relationships between sediment biogeochemistry, hypoxia, and chlorophyll metrics but not with water renewal time. Internal nutrient loading represented 65% and 69% of total N loading, and 98% and 89% of total P loading to the estuary in June and September, respectively. Sediment nitrogen flux was highly predictable from a range of local sediment variables that reflect either nutrient content, or organic carbon enrichment in general. Percent nitrogen and percent carbon were highly correlated but sediment P flux was poorly predicted from sediment parameters examined. The highest correlations were with percent nitrogen and percent carbon. These results indicate that incorporating internal nutrient loading into nutrient monitoring programs is a critical next step to improve predictive capacity for eutrophication endpoints and to mitigate nutrient effects. In spite of its importance as regards size (volume 9.2 106 m3, max depth 151 m) and as a source of drinking water, Lake Bolsena has not been studied from a hydrochemical point of view since the second half of the 60s, when a group of researchers from the Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia co-ordinated a complete study of the limnology of the Latium lakes Bolsena, Albano, Vico, and Bracciano. In the following years analyses were performed sporadically; since the 90s, temperature and oxygen profiles and other studies were made by the Associazione Lago di Bolsena. Based on chemical profiles made in 2001-2003, this paper discusses the present chemical composition of Lake Bolsena waters, and compares them with those of other volcanic lakes in Latium (Bracciano, Albano, Nemi and Vico). The paper briefly considers the main factors influencing the water chemistry of Lake Bolsena, the variations observed from the analyses of the 60s, and the main sources of risk to water quality.

Littoral benthic diatom communities are pivotal indicators which react to coastline sources of pollution. Littoral communities, however, may be also strongly influenced by other environmental factors: we assumed that even in lakes without anthropogenic pressure, communities could be heterogeneous. To investigate the natural causes of community heterogeneity along shoreline, we sampled 58 pristine high-altitude lakes in the French Alps. Inside each lake, three different littoral stations were sampled. Water chemical composition was measured with major environmental settings. Lakes with homogeneous communities along their shoreline were dominated by pioneer species adapted to strong physical disturbances. The water renewal time in these lakes was short (a few days) and this conveyed strong turbulences. Lakes with heterogeneous communities along their shore had longer water renewal time and were dominated by high-profile diatoms that were able to compete for light and nutrients. The within-lake heterogeneity could be explained by the variability in coastline terrestrial habitats. This study illustrates how water turbulences can limit the expression of some ecological processes like interspecific competition and reduce heterogeneity when it is an overriding stressor. Hydrographic observations and ocean‐atmosphere modeling indicate Red Sea deep water was episodically renewed by wintertime open‐ocean deep convections during 1982–2001, suggesting a renewal time on the order of a decade. However, the long‐term pacing of Red Sea deep water renewals is largely uncertain. We use an annually resolved coral oxygen isotope record of winter surface water conditions to show that the late twentieth century deep water renewals were probably unusual in the context of the preceding ~100 years. More frequent major events are detected during the late Little Ice Age, particularly during the early nineteenth century characterized by large tropical volcanic eruptions. We conclude that Red Sea deep water renewal time is on the order of a decade up to a century, depending on the mean climatic conditions and large‐scale interannual climate forcing. Studying groundwater renewal time is a valuable tool to deepen the comprehension of sustainable groundwater resources specific to arid regions. Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen often used as an environmental tracer to study groundwater renewal time. The present work reports groundwater renewal times by the environmental tracer tritium to understand sustainable water resources in arid regions. First, groundwater samples were collected from wells in northeastern arid regions of Saudi Arabia. Then, an electrolysis process was employed to significantly increase the tritium level from twenty-five to thirty times the original concentration. Subsequently, the enriched water was analyzed using a liquid scintillation counter under optimized measurement conditions to determine the tritium concentration precisely. Two internationally recognized tritium laboratories conducted independent assessments to validate the estimated tritium levels. The verified tritium concentration was then used to estimate the groundwater renewal time using the Morgenstern and Pimenta curves. The results suggest that most of the monitored wells in the surveyed areas are more than a century old. Conversely, a few monitoring wells exhibit renewal times of several hundred years and may be considered nonrenewable water sources. These studies help to understand the geochemical characteristics of arid regions to ensure the sustainable management and protection of groundwater resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evaluating and integrating local ecological knowledge held by fishers into decision-making processes has the potential to significantly enhance fisheries management. The present study aimed to collect information on fishery practices and to assess the ecological knowledge of local professional fishers through interviews, evaluating its importance in managerial design. As a case study, Polyphytos Reservoir in Greece, which supports substantial fisheries, was selected. During the summer of 2023, thirty-seven interviews were conducted to document fishing efforts, methods, catches, biological information, and fishers' perspectives on lake management, and economic/demographic details. In addition to gathering data on fishing activities, the study seeks to understand fishers' perspectives on managerial deficiencies and necessities, thereby revealing their valuable ecological knowledge. The integration of this knowledge into decision-making processes can empower stakeholders and enhance local participation in fishery management. The spatial and temporal variation of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) has been a topic of interest for researchers in recent years. However, the study of SGD is limited within the scope of Zhanjiang Bay. The Zhanjiang Bay is located in western Guangdong Province, known for its high temperatures and typhoon vulnerability. The present study examined the fluctuation patterns of seawater 222Rn in Zhanjiang Bay during the period from June 2021 to March 2022. This investigation employs the 222Rn tracing technique to establish a mass balance model to compute the SGD rate, and assess the significance of SGD in translocating nutrients into the bay. We conducted a four-month sampling, observing the differences between the rainy and dry seasons. Precipitation exerts a significant influence on the seasonal variations of SGD. The SGD rates of Zhanjiang Bay ranged from 7.14 to 10.75 cm·d-1 in the dry season and from 13.38 to 14.61 cm·d-1 in the rainy season. SGD-derived nutrients also exhibited seasonal fluctuations, the annual input of nutrients it supplies may be comparable to the quantity delivered by rivers, which significantly impacted the trophic status of the bay. Bivalve culture is know to affect some interactions between the water column and the benthic environment with the organic enrichment. An in situ mesocosms experiment was used to determine the influence of mussel biodeposition on the benthic ecosystem in St. Peters Bay, Prince Edward Island, eastern Canada. Eight mussel densities (0 to 2266 mussels m-2) were placed above mesocosms to reproduce the organic enrichment from a mussel farm over 12 weeks. The experimental procedure created an accumulation of organic matter on the seafloor with increasing mussel densities. Some benthic parameters had the predicted response to organic enrichment, with the presence of anoxic sediment in sediment profile images, increased water and organic matter content, and reduced infaunal abundance and species richness. Other parameters, including redox potential, total free sulfides, and the response of the biotic index AMBI, had inconsistent responses to mussel biodeposition-related organic enrichment. Given that other studies done in other locations have observed varying results, results suggest that measurement of various parameters is important to interpret the influence of deposition from mussel farms. The conditions of the site and the study duration are also parameters to consider when evaluating the results from mesocosm studies. Harmful algal bloom events occur in salt, brackish, and fresh water. In bodies of water such as oceans and estuaries, diatoms or dinoflagellates form "tides" that produce toxins associated with seafood poisoning, including paralytic shellfish poisoning, or respiratory distress from inhalation of aerosolized toxins. Cyanobacteria predominantly bloom in fresh water; they can produce microcystins; cylindrospermopsin; and other toxins that humans or animals might be exposed to through water contact, inhalation, or ingestion. Animals that become ill or die can be sentinels for harmful algal bloom events. In a One Health approach, information about harmful algal bloom exposures and health effects support efforts to detect these events and mitigate and prevent associated illnesses. Human, animal, and environmental health partners can work together to document the occurrence and impacts of harmful algal bloom events and characterize associated illnesses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract A bay's capacity to buffer fluvial fluxes between the land and sea is sensitive to hydrological changes that can affect its water renewal rates. In Cartagena Bay, Colombia, pollution issues have been associated with freshwater fluxes which are projected to increase in future years. This has led to plans to reduce freshwater flows by constructing upstream hydraulic doors. Given the influence of freshwater discharge on coastal water renewal, it is important to assess how these upstream changes will affect the bay's hydrodynamic processes. This study calibrated the 3D MOHID Water model, configured with a high-resolution mixed vertical discretization to capture the bay's characteristic processes of vertical stratification and mixing. A Lagrangian transport model was used to analyze the flow of passive particle tracers and calculate water renewal time scales. Mean residence times of 3–6 days and flushing times of 10–20 days for canal water were found, while mean residence times of 23–33 days and flushing times of 70–99 days were calculated for the bay's complete water volume. An assessment of future scenarios showed that increases in freshwater runoff would result in faster water renewal in the bay, while plans to decrease freshwater discharge would result in slower water renewal in the bay. It is therefore imperative that any plans for reducing fluvial fluxes into the bay be accompanied by the control of local pollution sources, which are abundant and could worsen the bay's water quality issues should water renewal times become longer. This work presents an experimental evaluation of a Venturi and Venturi-Vortex microbubble aeration system, taking as input variables the water-air flow ratio, water renewal time and area-volume ratio of the water tank. The aeration process response variables are defined in terms of oxygen transfer and aeration efficiency through the standard volumetric mass transfer coefficient (KLa20), standard oxygen transfer rate (SOTR), and standard aeration efficiency (SAE). Two methods of air injection were analyzed: 1. Air injection in the throat chamber of the Venturi generator; 2. air supplying in the suction side of the hydraulic pump of the aeration system. Experimental results indicate that the water renewal time variable (RT) is a statistically significant factor with respect to the KLa20, which can be maximized by decreasing RT. The effects of the variable flow ratio (FR) are greater than the effects of renewal time and area-volume ratio (AVR) concerning SOTR and SAE, indicating a maximum response with a minimum flow ratio, using the Venturi-Vortex microbubble generator. When the flow ratio decreases, the air flow increases, generating and transferring a greater amount of microbubbles (MB) into the water. It was found that increasing the air flow produced an increase in the standard oxygen transfer rate SOTR and standard aeration efficiency SAE. Results allow concluding that the injection of the air flow from the suction side of the pump promotes the generation of microbubbles (MB) for a maximum air flow allowed by the system. SOTR and SAE could be maximized whit the flow ratio factor and the Venturi-Vortex generator, supplying air flow from the suction side of the hydraulic pump.

Coastal lagoons are among the most important, but also threatened, marine systems of our planet. Rainfall, wind, seawater, and freshwater discharges control water circulation in lagoons, determining the water properties that are vital for the lagoon's biodiversity. The present work is the first study on the circulation patterns and seasonal variability of hydrological parameters in Antinioti lagoon in western Greece, building a reference level on our knowledge of the hydrodynamic functioning of this marine ecosystem. This study shows that the lagoon's water properties' fluctuations and circulation variability are affected by an antagonistic effect between freshwater (river discharge, underground spring, rainfall) and seawater inputs. This effect, influenced by atmospheric forcing (rainfall, atmospheric temperature), controls the heat and salt budgets of the lagoon. Nevertheless, the lagoon keeps an almost balanced annual cycle, returning from June 2020 to June 2021 to similar values for all parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The rise in the global mean sea level (MSL) is a significant consequence of climate change, attributed to both natural and anthropogenic forces. This phenomenon directly affects the dynamic equilibrium of Earth's oceanic and estuarine ecosystems, particularly impacting the Amazon estuary. In this study, a numerical model was employed to investigate the long-term impacts of MSL fluctuations on key hydrodynamic parameters crucial to regional environmental dynamics. Our investigation was based on scenarios derived from Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) and Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) projections, incorporating MSL variations ranging from 30 to 150 cm above the current mean level. Following careful calibration and validation procedures, which utilized observational and in situ data, notably from field expeditions conducted in 2019, our simulations unveiled significant impacts on certain hydrodynamic parameters. Specifically, we observed a pronounced increase in diurnal tidal amplitude (p < 0.05) within the upstream sections of the North and South channels. Additionally, discernible alterations in water renewal rates throughout the estuary were noted, persisting for approximately 2 days during the dry season (p < 0.05). These findings provide valuable insights into the vulnerability of key parameters to hydrologic instability within the Amazonian coastal region. In conclusion, this study represents a pivotal scientific endeavor aimed at enhancing the preservation of aquatic ecosystems and advancing the environmental knowledge of the Lower Amazon River, with the goal of proactively informing measures to safeguard the current and future sustainability of these vital ecosystems. Microplastic pollution poses an escalating concern, particularly in coastal lagoons rich in biodiversity. This study delved into the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in Magallana gigas (formerly Crassostrea gigas) from the Orbetello and Varano coastal lagoons (Italy), also investigating the response of these filter-feeding organisms to various colors (P = pink; B = blue; W = white) of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) MP fragments. Oysters were exposed for 7 days under controlled conditions. Subsequently, the oysters underwent analysis for both MP presence and biochemical markers of oxidative stress. Diverse ingestion rates of HDPE were noted among oysters from the two lagoons, eliciting antioxidant responses and modifying baseline activity. The two-way ANOVA revealed the significant effects of treatment (control; HDPE_B; HDPE_P; HDPE_W), site, and the interaction between treatment and site on all biomarkers. Non-metric multidimensional scaling showed a divergent effect of HDPE color on biomarkers. Further investigation is warranted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the influence of MP color, dose-dependent effects, and the long-term impacts of exposure. A lack of natural resources drives the oil dependency in Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTs), hampering energy security and imposing high electricity tariffs in the region. Nevertheless, the Western Equatorial Pacific is known for its large Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and deep-sea water (DSW) temperature difference favorable for harvesting thermal energy. In this study, we selected 18 PICTs in the western Equatorial Pacific to estimate Annual Energy Production (AEP) for a 1 MW class Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) plant. We combined the DSW temperature from the mean in situ Argo profiles and 1 km resolution satellite SST data to estimate the thermal energy resource resolving the fine features of the island coastline. Furthermore, the twenty-year-long SST dataset was used to analyze the SST variability. The analysis showed that Equatorial islands and Southern islands have the highest inter-annual variability due to El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The power density varied from 0.26 to 0.32 W/m2 among the islands, with the lowest values found for the southernmost islands near the South Equatorial Countercurrent. Islands within the South Equatorial Current, Equatorial Undercurrent, and North Equatorial Countercurrent showed the highest values for both power density and gross power. Considering a 1 MW class OTEC plant, Annual Energy Production (AEP) in 2022 varied from 7 GWh to 8 GWh, with relatively low variability among islands near the Equator and in low latitudes. Considering the three variables, AEP, SST variability, and distance from the shore, Nauru is a potential candidate for OTEC, with a net power of 1.14 MW within 1 km from the shore. Our understanding of the environmental behavior, bioaccumulation and concentrations of chlorinated paraffins (CPs) and Dechloranes (Dec) in the Arctic environment is still limited, particularly in freshwater ecosystems. In this descriptive study, short chain (SCCPs) and medium chain (MCCPs) CPs, Dechlorane Plus (DP) and analogues, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in sediments, benthic organisms, three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) in two Sub-Arctic lakes in Northern Norway. Takvannet (TA) is a remote lake, with no known local sources for organic contaminants, while Storvannet (ST) is situated in a populated area. SCCPs and MCCPs were detected in all sediment samples from ST with concentration of 42.26--115.29 ng/g dw and 66.18--136.69 ng/g dw for SCCPs and MCCPs, respectively. Only SCCPs were detected in TA sediments (0.4--5.28 ng/g dw). In biota samples, sticklebacks and benthic organisms showed the highest concentrations of CPs, while concentrations were low or below detection limits in both char and trout. The congener group patterns observed in both lakes showed SCCP profiles dominated by higher chlorinated congener groups while the MCCPs showed consistency in their profiles, with C14 being the most prevalent carbon chain length. Anti- and syn-DP isomers were detected in all sediment, benthic and stickleback samples with higher concentrations in ST than in TA. However, they were only present in a few char and trout samples from ST. Dec 601 and 604 were below detection limits in all samples in both lakes. Dec 603 was detected only in ST sediments, sticklebacks and 2 trout samples, while Dec 602 was the only DP analogue found in all samples from both lakes. While there were clear differences in sediment concentrations of DP and Dec 602 between ST and TA, differences between lakes decreased with increasing δ15N. This pattern was similar to the PCB behavior, suggesting the lake characteristics in ST are playing an important role in the lack of biomagnification of pollutants in this lake. Eutrophication is a main threat to continental aquatic ecosystems. Prevention and amelioration actions have been taken under the assumption of a stable climate, which needs reconsideration. Here, we show that reduced precipitation can bring a lake ecosystem to a more productive regime even with a decline in nutrient external load. By analyzing time series of several decades in the largest lake of the Iberian Peninsula, we found autocorrelated changes in the variance of state variables (i.e., chlorophyll and oxygen) indicative of a transient situation towards a new ecosystem regime. Indeed, exceptional planktonic diatom blooms have occurred during the last few years, and the sediment record shows a shift in phytoplankton composition and an increase in nutrient retention. Reduced precipitation almost doubled the water residence time in the lake, enhancing the relevance of internal processes. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2) concentrations have risen steadily and have induced a decrease of the averaged surface ocean pH by 0.1 units, corresponding to an increase in ocean acidity of about 30 %. In addition to ocean warming, ocean acidification poses a tremendous challenge to some marine organisms, especially calcifiers. The need for long-term oceanic observations of pH and temperature is a key element to assess the vulnerability of marine communities and ecosystems to these pressures. Nearshore productive environments, where a large majority of shellfish farming activities are conducted, are known to present pH levels as well as amplitudes of daily and seasonal variations that are much larger than those observed in the open ocean. Yet, to date, there are very few coastal observation sites where these parameters are measured simultaneously and at high frequency. To bridge this gap, an observation network was initiated in 2021 in the framework of the CocoriCO 2 project. Six sites were selected along the French Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines based on their importance in terms of shellfish production and the presence of high- and low-frequency monitoring activities. At each site, autonomous pH sensors were deployed, both inside and outside shellfish production areas, next to high-frequency CTD (conductivity–temperature–depth) probes operated through two operating monitoring networks. pH sensors were set to an acquisition rate of 15 min, and discrete seawater samples were collected biweekly in order to control the quality of pH data (laboratory spectrophotometric measurements) as well as to measure total alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations for full characterization of the carbonate system. While this network has been up and running for more than 2 years, the acquired dataset has already revealed important differences in terms of pH variations between monitored sites related to the influence of diverse processes (freshwater inputs, tides, temperature, biological processes). The aim of this study was to investigate the variability of the water exchanges in the Curonian Lagoon based on the hydraulic regime and the atmospheric forcings. A finite element hydrodynamic model has been applied to the Curonian Lagoon to simulate the circulation patterns for 10 years.With the help of a transport-diffusion model, the salinity distribution and the renewal times of the Curonian Lagoon have been investigated when forced by river runoff, wind, and Baltic Sea level fluctuations. The hydrodynamic model has been validated using in situ salinity measurements. Model results show that the variability depends mainly on seasonal changes in hydrographic forcing and on the dominant wind regimes that prevail over the Curonian Lagoon. Exchanges between the southern and the northern part of the lagoon mostly depend on the wind forcing and are much less influenced by the river discharge. However, when looking at the water renewal time, the most important factor is the river discharge into the lagoon. Other physical forcings only marginally determine the renewal time, and not even ice cover is able to influence it. Even if ice cover strongly inhibits the exchanges between the southern and northern lagoon, it is basically not able to change the absolute value of the renewal times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In situ evaluations of the metabolic rates (i.e., respiration and excretion) of salmonid eggs are mostly indirect, focusing on the sampling of hyporheic water from wild or artificial nests. Comparatively, experimental studies carried out under controlled, laboratory conditions are less abundant due to methodological difficulties. This study presents a novel experimental setup aimed to address this issue and enable the measurement of oxygen and dissolved inorganic nitrogen fluxes in simulated rainbow trout (O. mykiss) egg pockets. The experimental setup consists of reconstructed egg pockets in cylindrical cores under flow-through conditions. Live and dead eyed-stage eggs were incubated in a natural, sterilised gravel substrate. Hyporheic water circulation was ensured using peristaltic pumps, with the possibility to collect and analyse inflowing and outflowing water for chemical analyses. Microcosm incubations, with closed respirometry of eggs in water alone, were also carried out in order to infer the importance of microbial respiration in the simulated egg pockets. The results show an increasing trend in oxygen demand, due to the development of biofilm in the reconstructed egg pockets and increased egg respiration rates. Moreover, egg pockets showed positive ammonium net fluxes connected with the advancing developmental egg stage, while nitrate removal peaked during the last phase of the experiment, mainly due to the formation of oxic-hypoxic interfaces, leading to couple nitrification–denitrification processes. The suggested approach enables to test a number of in situ situations, including the effects of extreme hydrological conditions, sediment clogging and sudden changes in water chemistry or temperature on the survival and metabolic performances of nests, at different egg development stages. Spirolides (SPXs), gymnodimines (GYMs), and pinnatoxins (PnTXs) have been detected in shellfish from the northwestern Mediterranean coast of Spain. Several samples of bivalves were collected from Fangar Bay and Alfacs Bay in Catalonia over a period of over 7 years (from 2015 to 2021). Shellfish samples were analyzed for cyclic imines (CIs) on an LC1200 Agilent and 3200 QTrap triple–quadrupole mass spectrometer. In shellfish, SPX-1 was detected in two cases (of 26.5 µg/kg and 34 µg/kg), and GYM-A was only detected in trace levels in thirteen samples. Pinnatoxin G (PnTX-G) was detected in 44.6% of the samples, with its concentrations ranging from 2 µg/kg to 38.4 µg/kg. Statistical analyses revealed that seawater temperature influenced the presence or absence of these toxins. PnTX-G showed an extremely significant presence/temperature relationship in both bays in comparison to SPX-1 and GYM-A. The prevalence of these toxins in different bivalve mollusks was evaluated. A seasonal pattern was observed, in which the maximum concentrations were found in the winter months for SPX-1 and GYM-A but in the summer months for PnTX-G. The obtained results indicate that it is unlikely that CIs in the studied area pose a potential health risk through the consumption of a seafood diet. Between 2018 and 2022, four pearl farming Tuamotu atolls of French Polynesia were monitored with autonomous oceanographic instruments to measure the hydrodynamics of atoll lagoons and the ocean–lagoon water exchanges. These surveys were conducted within the framework of the ANR-funded MANA (Management of Atolls) project and its extensions to additional sites. The overarching goal was to improve knowledge on the processes influencing the spat collection of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera, the oyster species used to produce black pearls. These data sets are also critical for the calibration and validation of 3D high spatial resolution hydrodynamic models used to study oyster larval dispersal within lagoons. The observational strategies focused on the characterization of ocean–lagoon exchanges through passes and hoa (i.e., shallow reef flats), lagoon circulation, incident waves breaking on the forereef, water elevation inside the lagoon as well as spatial temperature variability. Chronologically, the investigated atolls were first Raroia Atoll with 9 months of measurements between May 2018 and March 2019 during which the MALIS1 and MALIS2 cruises on-board the R/V ALIS took place. It was followed by a 4 month deployment in Takapoto Atoll (November 2021 to March 2022). In late April 2022, Apataki Atoll was instrumented until end of July, followed by Takaroa measurements between July and October 2022. Apataki (Leg2) and Takaroa Atoll were conjointly instrumented during the MALIS 3 oceanographic cruise. Altogether, those multi-atoll data bring a worldwide unique oceanographic atoll data set that is useful for addressing local pearl farming questions but potentially beneficial for other fundamental and applied investigations. The Precambrian‐Cambrian (Pc‐C) boundary marks significant biological, atmospheric, and oceanic changes. These changes include extinction of the Ediacaran fauna, initiation of complex lifeforms, and oxygenation of the atmosphere and oceans. In this contribution, elemental and Mo‐S isotopic compositions of organic‐rich shales overlying the Pc‐C boundary from the Tal Formation, Lesser Himalaya, have been investigated. These datasets are used to reconstruct past oceanic redox state and sulfate concentrations. The principal component analysis of the elemental dataset identifies six major factors, with factors associated with organic matter and sulfide phases accounting for about half of the total variance. Iron speciation and Mo/U data suggest that the shales were deposited in anoxic and ferruginous deep water conditions. The δ98Mo data (1.5 ± 0.2‰) and their mass balance calculations indicate that the areal extent of sulfidic waters and pyrite burial rates were about 2–4 times higher during the Pc‐C transition than in the modern ocean. The pyrite‐δ34S values (3.6–8.3‰) for the Tal shales are isotopically heavier compared to modern‐day sedimentary pyrites (∼−21‰). Calculations involving earlier‐reported δ34S values for early Cambrian seawater and our measured pyrite‐δ34S data estimate the seawater sulfate concentration (8 ± 3 mM) during their deposition. This sulfate value for the Tal basin is higher than that reported for the late Neoproterozoic ocean (<5 mM), attributable to increasing oxygen availability and continental supply during this time. The observed basinal conditions and high terrestrial input may have influenced metazoan diversification. The Arctic Ocean likely impacts global climate through its effect on the rate of deep-water formation and the subsequent influence on global thermohaline circulation. Here, the renewal of the deep waters in the isolated Canadian Basin is quanitified. Using hydraulic theory and hydrographic observations, the authors calculate the magnitude of this renewal where circumstances have thus far prevented direct measurements. A volume flow rate of Q = 0.25 ± 0.15 Sv (Sv ≡ 106 m3 s-1) from the Eurasian Basin to the Canadian Basin via a deep gap in the dividing Lomonosov Ridge is estimated. Deep-water renewal time estimates based on this flow are consistent with 14C isolation ages. The flow is sufficiently large that it has a greater impact on the Canadian Basin deep water than either the geothermal heat flux or diffusive fluxes at the deep-water boundaries. To estimate the water-renewal time of the Gulf of Finland, a numerical-model simulation comprising the years 1987–1992 was carried out for realistic meteorological forcing. The results concerning water age as well as renewal index proved to reflect properties of the mean circulation system. The highest water ages (of around 2 yr) were found in the south-eastern part of the Gulf. The water-age distribution after the 5-yr simulation proved to be almost identical to that obtained after 3 yr, indicating that the circulation in the Gulf may be rather stable. The analysis of the renewal-index results showed that it takes around 5 yr to renew 98% of the water masses of the Gulf. When local maxima of the renewal index are found in conjunction with high water ages, this may indicate that the region is particularly vulnerable to eutrophication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pyrethroid insecticides are among urban parks' most widely used and harmful insecticides. The advanced prediction method is the key to studying the pollution and diffusion risk of plant conservation insecticides in parks. A two-dimensional advection-dispersion model was established for the North Lake of Cloud Mountain Park in the subhumid area of Hebei Province. The temporal and spatial distribution of lambda-cyhalothrin pollution required by plant growth in artificial lakes under different rainfall intensities and the time of water renewal after rainfall was simulated and predicted. According to the model efficiency (E : 0.98), mean absolute error (MAE : 0.016–0.064 cm), and root mean square error (RMSE : 0.014–0.041 cm), the prediction results showed that the model fits well. The results showed that the concentration of lambda-cyhalothrin in the artificial lake was positively correlated with the increase in rainfall intensity. Under the three scenarios of moderate rain, heavy rain, and rainstorm, the variation of total pollutants into the lake over time conformed to the first-order dynamic equation (R 2 ＞0.97), and the cumulative rates were 0.013 min−1, 0.019 min−1 and 0.022 min−1, respectively. Under light rain, the accumulation rate of lambda-cyhalothrin showed a double-linear relationship, which was in accordance with the second-order kinetic equation (R 2 ＞0.97). The rapid accumulation rate of early-stage rainfall was 0.0024 min−1, and the slow accumulation rate of late-stage rainfall was 0.0019 min−1. The human health risk assessment predicted by the simulation was lower than the hazard value (R tg n (a-1) : 9.65 E−11–1.12 E−10 a-1). However, the potential risk value to aquatic species was higher (RQ : 0.33–23.05). In addition, the increase in rainfall intensity has no significant effect on the acceleration of water renewal time. The two-dimensional dispersion model of pollutants driven by water dynamics provided relevant examples for evaluating the impact of runoff on pesticide scour in parks and supplied scientific support for improving the management of artificial lakes in urban parks. Turbulent diapycnal mixing is important for the estuarine circulation between basins of the Baltic Sea as well as for its local ecosystems, in particular with regard to eutrophication and anoxic conditions. While the interior of the basins is overall relatively calm, stratified flow over steep bathymetric features is known as a source of strong turbulent mixing. Yet, current in situ observations often cannot capture the spatio-temporal development of dynamic and intermittent turbulent mixing related to overflows over rough bathymetry. We present observational oceanographic data together with openly accessible high-resolution bathymetry from a prototypical sill and an adjacent deep channel in the sparsely sampled Southern Quark located in the Åland Sea, connecting the northern Baltic Proper with the Bothnian Sea. Our data were acquired during two 1-week cruises on R/V Electra in February–March 2019 and 2020. We collected high-resolution broadband acoustic observations of turbulent mixing together with in situ microstructure profiler measurements, and current velocities from acoustic Doppler current profilers. We found that a temporally reversing non-tidal stratified flow over the steep bathymetric sill created a dynamic and extremely energetic environment. The observed flow reversed during both cruises on timescales of a few days. Saltier, warmer, and less oxygenated deep water south of the sill was partly blocked, the reversing flow was at times hydraulically controlled with hydraulic jumps occurring on both sides of the sill, and high spatial variability occurred in the surface layer on small scales. Dissipation rates of turbulent kinetic energy, vertical turbulent diffusivities, and vertical salt flux rates were increased by 3–4 orders of magnitude in the entire water column in the vicinity of the sill compared to reference stations not directly influenced by the overflow with average dissipation rates near the sill between 10 -7 and 10 -6 W kg -1 , average vertical diffusivities of 0.001 m 2 s -1 in the halocline and up to 0.1 m 2 s -1 below the halocline, and average vertical salt flux rates around 0.01 g m -2 s -1 in the halocline and between 0.1 and 1 g m -2 s -1 below the halocline. We suggest, based on acoustic observations and in situ measurements, that the underlying mechanism for the highly increased mixing across the halocline is a combination of shear and topographic lee waves breaking at the halocline interface. We anticipate that the resulting deep- and surface-water modification in the Southern Quark directly impacts exchange processes between the Bothnian Sea and the northern Baltic Proper and that the observed mixing is likely important for oxygen and nutrient conditions in the Bothnian Sea. Over the years, the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), a prominent species in Mediterranean aquaculture with an increasing production volume and aquafarming technologies, has become an important research focus. The accumulation of knowledge via several studies during the past decades on their functional and biological characteristics has significantly improved the aquacultural aspects, namely their reproductive success, survival, and growth. Despite the remarkable progress in the aquaculture industry, hatchery conditions are still far from ideal, resulting in frequent challenges at the beginning of intensive culture, entailing significant economic losses. Given its increasing importance and the persistent challenges faced in its aquacultural practices, a thorough review is essential to consolidate knowledge, and elucidate the intricate facets concerning its distribution, life cycle, growth dynamics, genetics, aquaculture methodologies, economic dimensions, and the challenges inherent to its cultivation.
