An inertial micro-switch with multi-threshold acceleration detection capability has been proposed, taking advantage of electromechanical coupling behavior. A mathematical model of electromechanical coupling behavior was established to display the dependence of highly sensitivity on pull-in characteristic and show the ability to detect threshold acceleration by controlling the voltage applied to the inertial micro-switch. The capability of sensitivity and detection that was described in mathematical model was implemented to occur at the inertial switch and showed agreement with that of a simulation. Inertia switches that were comprised of various microstructures with dimensions ranging 3.5 µm from 180 µm were manufactured by means of the micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) manufacturing process, and their functions were evaluated by a dropping system. The control method related to the manufacturing of inertial switches was obtained by analyzing the effect of the structural parameters of the inertial switch on threshold voltage and threshold acceleration, resulting in a relatively small error between simulation and experiment. The inertial micro-switch showed high sensitivity to achieving the pull-in effect at 30 V, sense multi-threshold acceleration ranging from 500 g to 2000 g in 2.46 ms and provided enough time for outputting the acceleration signal. Furthermore, the multi-threshold acceleration can be adjusted by controlling the voltage applied to inertial micro-switches. In addition, other functions of inertial micro-switches, such as lower residual stress, high recoverability, and repeatability, have been displayed.

Acceleration switch can trigger switches according to the variation of external acceleration without complex control system and circuit. With the excellent characteristics of integration of sensor and actuator, zero power consumption and high reliability, multi-threshold acceleration switch has great application value in the fields of vehicle safety, aerospace and industrial equipment. In order to reduce the complexity of the measurement system and improve the reliability, we realized the design of a multi-threshold and anti-overloading acceleration switch which can distinguish specific pulse width. Additionally, the magnetic elastic contact is designed to prevent the rebound phenomenon when switch is overloaded. Considering the coupling force of spring, magnetic elastic contact and magnetic, we built the dynamic model and analysed the influence of the acceleration threshold and the pulse width on the switch actuation. The numerical simulation shows that the proposed switch has accurate sensitivity of acceleration excitation with specific threshold and certain pulse width, and it also has the ability of anti-overload. Consequently, the proposed method provides a new method for designing acceleration switch.

The occurred earthquakes in recent years have proved that in some parts of the world, they possess more duration and cause further damage to structures. Due to the fact that major cities of Iran are located in the high seismic areas and also a significant part of existing buildings are concrete structures, it is necessary to study their vulnerability under long duration earthquakes. In this study, the performance of concrete structures affected by earthquakes with different durations (from low to high) has been investigated. In order to investigate the duration of the earthquake, a new index is defined, which is the number of accelerated cycles where their period is close to the structure predominant periods (with 10% difference) and their corresponding acceleration is also higher than the plastic acceleration threshold of the structure. For this purpose, three concrete structures with, 3, 6, and 9 stories were designed with optimal sections and the predominant period and the threshold acceleration for entering nonlinear behavior were calculated. Subsequently, all three buildings were investigated in two-dimensional SeismoStruct software and nonlinear analysis was carried out considering the stiffness deterioration and strength reduction (Takeda model). Each of the 3, 6 and 9 story structures was subjected to 119 earthquake records, durations, distances, magnitudes, and different soil types. Seismic performance of structures such as relative maximum displacement and number of plastic joints were investigated. The results of the analysis show that the use of the index introduced in this study is much more efficient than other definitions of duration for damage to concrete structures. In other words, duration of an earthquake, as defined by the number of cycles whose period is near the predominant period of the structure and accelerated beyond the plastic acceleration threshold of the structure, is very consistent with the rate of damage to the concrete structure. In continuation, the effects of the height and plastic acceleration threshold on various models are discussed in detail.

This paper presents a tunable multi-threshold micro-electromechanical inertial switch with adjustable threshold capability. The demonstrated device combines the advantages of accelerometers in providing quantitative acceleration measurements and g-threshold switches in saving power when in the inactive state upon experiencing acceleration below the thresholds. The designed proof-of-concept device with two thresholds consists of a cantilever microbeam and two stationary electrodes placed at different positions in the sensing direction. The adjustable threshold capability and the effect of the shock duration on the threshold acceleration are analytically investigated using a nonlinear beam model. Results are shown for the relationships among the applied bias voltage, the duration of shock impact, and the tunable threshold. The fabricated prototypes are tested using a shock-table system. The analytical results agree with the experimental results. As a typical type of MEMS acceleration sensor, the inertial switch can alter its on-off state while the environmental accelerations satisfy threshold value. An exhaustive summary of the design concept, performance aspects, and fabrication methods of the micro electromechanical system (MEMS) inertial switch is provided. Different MEMS inertial switch studies were reviewed that emphasized acceleration directional and threshold sensitivity, contact characteristics, and their superiorities and disadvantages. Furthermore, the specific fabrication methods offer an applicability reference for the preparation process for the designed inertial switch, including non-silicon surface micromachining technology, standard silicon micromachining technology, and the special fabrication method for the liquid inertial switch. At the end, the main conclusions of the current challenges and prospects about MEMS inertial switches are drawn to assist with the development of research in the field of future engineering applications.

Squeeze-film damping and acceleration load are two major issues in the design of inertial micro-switches. In order to deeply and systematically study these two issues, this paper proposes a typical vertically-driven inertial micro-switch, wherein the air and electrode gaps were chosen to design the required damping ratio and threshold value, respectively. The switch was modeled by ANSYS Workbench, and the simulation program was optimized for computational accuracy and speed. Transient analysis was employed to investigate the relationship between the damping ratio, acceleration load, and the natural frequency, and the dynamic properties (including contact bounce, contact time, response time, and threshold acceleration) of the switch. The results can be used as a guide in the design of inertial micro-switches to meet various application requirements. For example, increasing the damping ratio can prolong the contact time of the switch activated by short acceleration duration or reduce the contact bounce of the switch activated by long acceleration duration; the threshold value is immune to variations in the damping effect and acceleration duration when the switch is quasi-statically operated; the anti-jamming capability of the switch can be improved by designing the sensing frequency of the switch to be higher than the acceleration duration but much lower than the other order frequencies of the switch.

This paper reports an analysis on the relationship between the tilt of the proof mass in MEMS switch and the chattering phenomena. Low-g MEMS acceleration switch developed by Kim’s group was modelled in 2D and displacements of each end of the proof mass were analysed using RK 4th method. Some elementary assumptions were made to ease the modelling and analysis. The chattering time of the MEMS switch gets longer as the tilt of the proof mass increases. The reason is that the elongated travel distance of one end of proof mass increases the impact velocity and lengthens the bouncing back time. From the results, we found that the chattering phenomena can last very long even if the tilt of the proof mass is very small.

Response time is one of the core attributes for threshold acceleration switches for determining the impact severity. Different from single function inertial switches for only converting circuit states, a wireless inertial microswitch incorporating the bistable flexible mechanism was designed and fabricated using multilayered microelectroforming technology, which can be used for remote detection of both the threshold acceleration and the corresponding response time in severe environments. The threshold snap-through characteristic of the nonlinear bistable mechanism has been introduced to achieve the threshold acceleration sensing capability. The switch mainly consists of one wireless module, one proof mass supported by two pairs of ultralong V-shaped slender beams with the dimension of \(28.0~\mu \) m \(\times 25.0 \mu \) m \(\times 5150.0 \mu \) m, and two contact points for recording triggering times through the high speed sending and receiving wireless module. Then, an accurate design model for analyzing the threshold acceleration and the dynamic response time was established. The 20 repeated experimental results are in good agreement under the same triggering threshold acceleration of 32.38 g, in which, the response time with the traveling distance of \(530.0~\mu \) m is 179.80 ± 0.20 ms. S-net is a large-scale seafloor observation network for earthquakes and tsunamis around the Japan Trench, consisting of 150 observatories equipped with seismometers and pressure gauges. The sensors have been set up inside cylindrical pressure vessels, which have been buried in the shallow-water regions (water depth <1,500 m), while the vessels have been laid freely on the seafloor in the deeper-water regions. Previous studies showed that the cylindrical pressure vessels rotate during strong shakings due to poor coupling with the seabed sediments, thus making it difficult to retrieve the actual ground motions. We investigated the static changes in the orientations of S-net accelerometers due to shakings from 1,878 earthquakes of Mj greater than 4 that occurred around the network, and found that rotations as large values as 16° were observed during the 2022,Mj 7.4, off-Fukushima Prefecture earthquake. We estimated the threshold acceleration levels after which the sensors are likely to rotate at all S-net stations separately and found that the threshold values lie mostly between 5 and 50 cm/s². Finally, we discussed the observed peak accelerations and velocities at the S-net stations with those recorded on land, where high-quality records were obtained, during the 2022, Mj 7.4 earthquake, which was also the largest magnitude earthquake to occur in the region after the network commenced operation. The nonlinearity of the soil may considerably affect the response of structures subjected to seismic events. This paper aims to show under which circumstances geometry, soil, and earthquake-type; the nonlinearity is important. A simple model based on a 1D shear column was developed to calculate the maximum shear strain (γ) in the soil subjected to earthquake excitation. It was found that Δ is a function of peak ground acceleration PGA and the maximum horizontal ground displacement (Δ). EC8 provides an expression for calculating Δ that is independent of the soil thickness. It was found that this expression is conservative for shallow layers and underestimates γ for thick ones, as a result, improvements have been suggested. By performing several time history analyses, simple formulas are developed which enable the designer to assess when nonlinearity must be taken into account. Four curves based on soil thickness and peak ground acceleration have been introduced for different soil types (A, B, C, and D) using a limit value of γ = 10-4. These curves show that depending on the soil depth, the threshold acceleration of nonlinear soil behavior is around 0.48, 0.36, 0.29, and 0.10 m/s2 for soil types A, B, C, and D, respectively. Featured Application: In this work, a comprehensive review on how data-driven modelling and machine learning for error compensation in additive manufacturing is conferred. Additive Manufacturing (AM) of three-dimensional objects is now being progressively realised with its ad-hoc approach with minimal material wastage (lean manufacturing) being one of its benefit by default. It could also be considered as an evolutional paradigm in the manufacturing industry with its long list of application as of late. Artificial Intelligence is currently finding its usefulness in predictive modelling to provide intelligent, efficient, customisable, high-quality and sustainable-oriented production process. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on commonly used predictive models based on heuristic algorithms and discusses their applications toward making AM "smart". This paper summarises AM's current trend, future opportunity, gaps, and requirements together with recommendations for technology and research for inter-industry collaboration, educational training and technology transfer in the AI perspective in-line with the Industry 4.0 developmental process. Moreover, machine learning algorithms are presented for detecting product defects in the cyber-physical system of additive manufacturing. Based on reviews on various applications, printability with multi-indicators, reduction of design complexity threshold, acceleration of prefabrication, real-time control, enhancement of security and defect detection for customised designs are seen of as prospective opportunities for further research. We have demonstrated a batch-fabricated inertial microswitch with extended contact time using carbon nanotube (CNT)-contact pads. Self-assembled and aligned CNT bundles, as deformable electromechanical contact pads are selectively synthesized on fully fabricated single crystal silicon microstructures. Outstanding mechanical flexibility and resilience, as well as electrical conductivity of CNTs, make them suitable as an electromechanical contact material. It is experimentally verified that the elastic deformation of CNTs dramatically enhances the contact time of the inertial microswitch from 7.5 \mu\s to 114 \mu\s. Due to the prolonged contact time, the presented inertial microswitch provides reliable and easy detection of threshold acceleration, which is crucial in diverse commercial applications such as airbag restraint systems in vehicles or geriatric healthcare systems. In off-road environments, the lateral rollover stability of articulated unmanned rollers (URs) is critical to ensure operational safety and efficiency. This paper introduces the concept of a rollover energy barrier (REB), a symmetry-based metric that quantifies the energy margin between the current state and the critical rollover threshold of articulated rollers. URs exhibit dynamic asymmetry due to their hydraulic steering systems, which differ significantly from traditional passenger vehicles. To address these challenges, we propose a hierarchical control framework inspired by the principles of dynamic symmetry. This framework integrates Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) and Active Disturbance Rejection Control (ADRC): NMPC is used for trajectory planning by incorporating the REB into the cost function, ensuring rollover stability, while ADRC compensates for dynamic asymmetries, model uncertainties, and external disturbances during trajectory tracking. Simulation and experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in enhancing the rollover stability and tracking performance of the URs under off-road conditions. Here, we develop a new cellular automata-based traffic model. In this model, individual vehicles cannot estimate global traffic flows but can only detect the vehicle ahead. Each vehicle occasionally adjusts its velocity based on the distance to the vehicle in front. Our model generates reversible phase transitions in the vehicle flux over a wide range of vehicle densities, and the traffic system undergoes scale-free evolution with respect to the flux. We thus believe that our model reveals the relationship between the macro-level flows and micro-level mechanisms of multi-agent systems for handling traffic congestion, and illustrates how drivers' decisions impact free and congested flows. Most natural granular deposits are spatially variable due to heterogeneities in soil hydraulic conductivity, layer thickness, relative density, and continuity. However, existing simplified liquefaction evaluation procedures treat each susceptible layer as homogeneous and in isolation, neglecting water flow patterns and displacement mechanisms that result from interactions among soil layers, the groundwater table, foundation, and structure. In this paper, three-dimensional, fully coupled, nonlinear, dynamic finite-element analyses, validated with centrifuge experimental results, are used to evaluate the influence of stratigraphic layering, depth to the groundwater table, and foundation-structure properties on system performance. The ejecta potential index (EPI) serves as a proxy for surface ejecta severity within each soil profile. The results reveal that among all the engineering demand parameters (EDPs) and geotechnical liquefaction indices considered, only EPI predicted a substantial change in the surface manifestation of liquefaction due to changes in the location of the groundwater table and soil stratigraphy. This trend better follows the patterns from case history observations, indicating the value of EPI. Profiles with multiple critical liquefiable layers at greater depths resulted in base isolation and reduced permanent foundation settlement. Ground motion characteristics have the highest influence on EDPs, among the properties considered. The outcropping rock motion intensity measures with the best combination of efficiency, sufficiency, and predictability were identified as cumulative absolute velocity (for predicting foundation's permanent settlement and free-field EPI) and peak ground velocity (for peak excess porepressure ratio). These results underscore the importance of careful field characterization of stratigraphic layering in relation to the foundation and structural properties to evaluate the potential liquefaction deformation and damage mechanisms. Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based high-performance accelerometers are ubiquitously used in various electronic devices. However, there is an existing need to detect physical impacts using low-cost devices with no electronic circuits or a battery. We designed and fabricated an impact sensor prototype using a commercial stereolithography apparatus that only consists of a plastic housing and working fluids. The sensor device responds to the instantaneous acceleration (impact) by deformation and pinch off of a water droplet that is suspended in oil in a sensor cavity. We tested the various geometrical and physical parameters of the impact sensor to identify their relations to threshold acceleration values. We show that the state diagram that is plotted against the dimensionless Archimedes and Bond numbers adequately describes the response of the proposed sensor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The landslide inventory of the western flank of Mount Oku, Cameroon, includes spreads or complex landslides, indicating sudden soil weakening, possibly due to seismic activity or heavy rainfall causing groundwater rise. These landslides were likely triggered between 2009 and 2018 based on the dates of the aerial imagery. Identifying triggers for past landslides remains a major unresolved issue in landslide science. However, understanding these triggers is crucial for accurately assessing future landslide hazards. Methodology: In this paper, we investigate the possibility of earthquakes to precondition landslide development or reactivation during climatic events. By assuming a magnitude 5.2 earthquake, an epicenter of 10 km from this area, and different wetness conditions, the factor of safety (FS) and Newmark displacement (ND) models were calculated for shallow and deep-seated landslides with sliding depths of 3 and 7.5 m. Afterward, the relationship between FS, assumed ND, and observed landslides was analyzed in a cluster analysis, to derive patterns of climatically and seismically triggered landslides. Results: The comparison of FS maps and FS values of the observed landslides revealed that especially for landslides at 7.5 m depth, most sites that are stable during dry conditions become instable under saturated conditions, indicating a climatic trigger. At 3 m depth, however, some landslide sites that are still marginally stable under saturated conditions, display relatively high ND values for the investigated hypothetical earthquake, indicating a possible seismic influence. In the cluster analysis, we clustered the observed landslides according to their distances to rivers and topographic ridges and obtained three clusters. Landslides from cluster 3 with 31% of the landslides display medium to high ND for the assumed earthquake, and were found near ridges and farther away from rivers, suggesting seismic triggering. Cluster 2, with 12% of landslides closer to rivers, suggested climatic origins. Thus, while climate is a critical landslide contributing factor, seismic events may also contribute, either by predisposing to landslides or by reactivating them alongside climatic factors. Large deformation of sand due to soil liquefaction is a major cause for seismic damage. In this study, the mechanisms and modeling of large post-liquefaction deformation of sand considering the significant influence of water absorption in shearing and seismic wave conditions. Assessment of case histories from past earthquakes and review of existing studies highlight the importance of the two factors. Based on the micro and macro scale mechanisms for post-liquefaction shear deformation, the mechanism for water absorption in shearing after initial liquefaction is revealed. This is aided by novel designed constant water-absorption-rate shear tests. Water absorption in shearing can be classified into three types, including partial water absorption, complete water absorption, and compulsory water absorption. Under the influence of water absorption in shearing, even a strongly dilative sand under naturally drained conditions could experience instability and large shear deformation. The mechanism for amplification of post-liquefaction deformation under surface wave load is also explained via element tests and theoretical analysis. This shows that surface wave-shear wave coupling can induce asymmetrical force and resistance in sand, resulting in asymmetrical accumulation of deformation, which is amplified by liquefaction. A constitutive model, referred to as CycLiq, is formulated to capture the large deformation of sand considering water absorption in shearing and seismic wave conditions, along with its numerical implementation algorithm. The model is comprehensively calibrated based on various types of element tests and validated against centrifuge shaking table tests in the liquefaction experiments and analysis projects (LEAP). The model, along with various numerical analysis methods, is adopted in the successful simulation of water absorption in shearing and Rayleigh wave-shear wave coupling induced large liquefaction deformation. Furthermore, the model is applied to high-performance simulation for large-scale soil-structure interaction in liquefiable ground, including underground structures, dams, quay walls, and offshore wind turbines. The increasing demand in structural engineering now extends beyond collapse prevention to encompass business continuity planning (BCP). In response, energy dissipation devices have garnered significant attention for building response control. Among these, buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) are particularly favored due to their stable hysteretic behavior and well-established design provisions. However, BCP also necessitates the prevention of furniture overturning—an area that remains quantitatively underexplored in the context of buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs). Addressing this gap, this research designs BRBFs using various design criteria and performs incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) with artificially generated seismic waves. The results are compared with previously developed fragility curves for furniture overturning under different BRB design conditions. The findings demonstrate that the fragility of furniture overturning can be mitigated by a natural frequency shift, which alters the threshold of critical peak floor acceleration. These results, combined with hazard curves obtained from various locations across Japan, quantify the mean annual frequency of furniture overturning. The study reveals that increased floor acceleration in stiffer BRBFs can lead to a 3.8-fold higher risk of furniture overturning compared to frames without BRBs. This heightened risk also arises from the greater hazards at shorter natural periods due to stricter response reduction demands. On 23 October 2011, a Mw = 7.2 earthquake occurred in the Van Province in eastern Turkey, killing 604 people. The earthquake was triggered by a thrust fault due to a compression stress in the region, and caused extensive damage over a large area. Many structures in the earthquake region collapsed, and the damage spread from the city of Van to the town of Ercis., in a distance of 60km. The earthquake generated several slope movements and liquefaction failures in the region, and this study evaluates these processes from the perspective of engineering geology, and presents field and laboratory results related to these processes. Attenuation relationships were used for estimation of peak ground accelerations (PGAs), and an empirical liquefaction evaluation method employing ground accelerations was used to define threshold accelerations initiating the liquefaction. The results demonstrate that landslides were widespread and more frequently observed in the field in comparison with earthflows and rockfalls. Flow-type liquefaction and lateral spreading was found to be widespread and more common than the liquefaction-related settlement. The minimum threshold acceleration value for the initiation of soil liquefaction was calculated to be 188.87 cm s-2 (~ 0.19 g) in the earthquake region. Laboratory results indicated that the soil liquefaction was closely associated with grain size. The slope instabilities, liquefaction and associated ground failures occurred mainly in rural areas, and their impact on structures was quite low as compared to the human loss and structural damage by the earthquake. Wheelchair basketball (WB) is a sport modality adapted for people with disabilities who present functional classification (FC) according to their mobility, from 1.0 for players with lesser functional capacity up to 4.5 for great mobility and trunk control players. This study aimed to analyze and compare the external load (EL) and the internal load (IL) of the WB players according to their FC in 5 × 5 simulation game tasks. The main objective of this task was to develop a simulated game in which two teams of five players faced each other to resemble the physical demands of an official match. The development of these tasks allowed for the players to learn the different systems of play, and to improve tactical skills. To conduct the study, 12 (male) national professional WB players (years: 30.7 ± 4.82 and WB experience: 5 ± 1.43) participated in the study and were grouped according to FC. WIMU PROTM devices monitored the EL manufactured by RealTrack Systems in Almería, Spain, and to measure the player's IL, GarminTM Heart Rate (HR) bands were used (GarminTM in Olathe, KS, USA). The EL variables were divided as kinematic (distance, explosive distance, acc, dec, max. acc, max. dec, average speed, max. speed) and neuromuscular (player load, impact). The IL variables were average HR, max. HR and %max. HR. The main results show that players with greater functional capacity (FC = 4.0) developed higher values in the IL and neuromuscular variables analyzed (p < 0.05), as well as in some kinematic variables like distance, dec and average speed (p < 0.05). ABSTRACT Fatigue vibration is a primary cause of fruit damage during transportation. Drawing on the Palmgren–Miner fatigue accumulation damage theory and the correlation between fruit vibration damage characteristics and external vibration excitation, this paper proposes a fruit vibration fatigue accumulation damage model and its method for parameter determination. Using pears as the research objects, we conducted fatigue damage vibration and critical fatigue damage vibration tests under various conditions to determine the vibration fatigue constant of the pears. By utilizing the critical value of the damage area specified in the pear grading standard for premium grade, we derived the threshold acceleration value for pear damage. These findings serve as a technical foundation for advancing our understanding of fruit vibration fatigue damage mechanisms and guiding the development of cushioning packaging to protect fruit from vibrations.

A mechanical trigger inertial micro-switch with spring stationary electrode is proposed and fabricated by surface micromachining. The elastic contact process and stability performance are evaluated through experimental tests performed using a drop hammer. The test results show that the contact time is about 110 μs and 100 μs when the threshold acceleration is 480 g and the overload acceleration is 602 g, respectively. The vibration process of the electrodes is explained through an established physical mode. The elastic contact process is analyzed and discussed by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations, which indicated that the contact time is about 65 μs when the threshold acceleration is 600 g. At the same time, this result also proved that the contact time could be extended effectively by the designed spring stationary electrode. The overload acceleration (800 g) has been applied to the Finite-Element model in ANSYS, the contact process indicated that the proof mass contacted with stationary electrode three times, and there was no bounce phenomenon during contact process, which fully proved that the stable contact process can be realized at high acceleration owing to the designed elastic stationary electrode. Little is known about the vestibulo-perceptual (VP) system, particularly after a unilateral vestibular lesion. We investigated vestibulo-ocular (VO) and VP function in 25 patients with vestibular neuritis (VN) acutely (2 days after onset) and after compensation (recovery phase, 10 weeks). Since the effect of VN on reflex and perceptual function may differ at threshold and supra-threshold acceleration levels, we used two stimulus intensities, acceleration steps of 0.5°/s2 and velocity steps of 90°/s (acceleration 180°/s2). We hypothesised that the vestibular lesion or the compensatory processes could dissociate VO and VP function, particularly if the acute vertiginous sensation interferes with the perceptual tasks. Both in acute and recovery phases, VO and VP thresholds increased, particularly during ipsilesional rotations. In signal detection theory this indicates that signals from the healthy and affected side are still fused, but result in asymmetric thresholds due to a lesion-induced bias. The normal pattern whereby VP thresholds are higher than VO thresholds was preserved, indicating that any ‘perceptual noise’ added by the vertigo does not disrupt the cognitive decision-making processes inherent to the perceptual task. Overall, the parallel findings in VO and VP thresholds imply little or no additional cortical processing and suggest that vestibular thresholds essentially reflect the sensitivity of the fused peripheral receptors. In contrast, a significant VO-VP dissociation for supra-threshold stimuli was found. Acutely, time constants and duration of the VO and VP responses were reduced – asymmetrically for VO, as expected, but surprisingly symmetrical for perception. At recovery, VP responses normalised but VO responses remained shortened and asymmetric. Thus, unlike threshold data, supra-threshold responses show considerable VO-VP dissociation indicative of additional, higher-order processing of vestibular signals. Oyster larvae (Crassostrea virginica) could enhance their settlement success by moving toward the seafloor In the strong turbulence associated with coastal habitats. We characterized the behavior of individual oyster larvae in grid-generated turbulence by measuring larval velocities and flow velocities simultaneously using infrared particle image velocimetry. We estimated larval behavioral velocities and propulsive forces as functions of the kinetic energy dissipation rate s, strain rate y, vorticity and acceleration a. In calm water most larvae had near-zero vertical velocities despite propelling themselves upward (swimming). In stronger turbulence all larvae used more propulsive force, but relative to the larval axis, larvae propelled themselves downward (diving) instead of upward more frequently and more forcefully. Vertical velocity magnitudes of both swimmers and divers increased with turbulence, but the swimming velocity leveled off as larvae were rotated away from their stable, velum-up orientation in strong turbulence. Diving speeds rose steadily with turbulence intensity to several times the terminal fall velocity in still water. Rapid dives may require a switch from ciliary swimming to another propulsive mode such as flapping the velum, which would become energetically efficient at the intermediate Reynolds numbers attained by larvae in strong turbulence. We expected larvae to respond to spatial or temporal velocity gradients, but although the diving frequency changed abruptly at a threshold acceleration, the variation in propulsive force and behavioral velocity was best explained by the dissipation rate. Inertial micro-switches have great potential in the applications of acceleration sensing, due to the integrated advantages of a small size, high integration level, and low or even no power consumption. This paper presents an overview of the recent advancements made in research on the sensitive direction, threshold acceleration, contact effect, and threshold accuracy of inertial micro-switches. The reviewed switches were categorized according to the performance parameters, including multi-directional switches, multi-threshold switches, persistent closed switches, flexible-electrode switches, and low-g high-threshold-accuracy switches. Determining temporal and spatial variation in feeding rates is essential for understanding the relationship between habitat features and the foraging behavior of top predators. In this study we examined the utility of head movement as a proxy of prey encounter rates in medium-sized Antarctic penguins, under the presumption that the birds should move their heads actively when they encounter and peck prey. A field study of free-ranging chinstrap and gentoo penguins was conducted at King George Island, Antarctica. Head movement was recorded using small accelerometers attached to the head, with simultaneous monitoring for prey encounter or body angle. The main prey was Antarctic krill (>99% in wet mass) for both species. Penguin head movement coincided with a slow change in body angie during dives. Active head movements were extracted using a high-pass filter (5Hz acceleration signals) and the remaining acceleration peaks (higher than a threshold acceleration of 1.0 g) were counted. The timing of head movements coincided well with images of prey taken from the back-mounted cameras: head movement was recorded within ±2.5 s of a prey image on 89.1±16.1% (N=7 trips) of images. The number of head movements varied largely among dive bouts, suggesting large temporal variations in prey encounter rates. Our results show that head movement is an effective proxy of prey encounter, and we suggest that the method will be widely applicable for a variety of predators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
