Open heart surgery requires a proper understanding of the endocardial surface of the heart and vascular structures. While modern four-dimensional (4D) imaging enables excellent dynamic visualization of the blood pool, endocardial surface anatomy has not routinely been assessed. 4D image data were post-processed using commercially available virtual reality (VR) software. Using thresholding, the blood pool was segmented dynamically across the imaging volume. The segmented blood pool was further edited for correction of errors due to artifacts or inhomogeneous signal intensity. Then, a surface shell of an even thickness was added to the edited blood pool. When the cardiac valve leaflets and chordae were visualized, they were segmented separately using a different range of signal intensity for thresholding. Using an interactive cutting plane, the endocardial surface anatomy was reviewed from multiple perspectives by interactively applying a cutting plane, rotating and moving the model. In conclusions, dynamic three-dimensional (3D) endocardial surface imaging is feasible and provides realistic simulated views of the intraoperative scenes at open heart surgery. As VR is based on the use of all fingers of both hands, the efficiency and speed of postprocessing are markedly enhanced. Although it is limited, visualization of the cardiac valve leaflets and chordae is also possible.

Near-surface seismic structure, particularly the shear wave velocity (Vs), can strongly affect local site response, and should be accurately estimated for ground motion prediction during seismic hazard assessment. The Imperial Valley (California), occupying the southern end of the Salton Trough, is a seismically active basin with thick surficial lacustrine sedimentary deposits. In this study, we utilize ambient noise records and local earthquake events for high-resolution near-surface characterization and site effect estimation with an unlit fiber-optic telecommunication infrastructure (dark fiber) in Imperial Valley by using the distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technique. We apply ambient noise interferometry to retrieve coherent surface waves from DAS records, and evaluate performances of three different surface wave methods on DAS ambient noise dispersion imaging. We develop a quality control workflow to improve the dispersion measurement of noisy portions of the DAS data set by using a data selection strategy. Using the joint inversion of both the fundamental mode and higher overtones of Rayleigh waves, a high resolution two-dimensional (2D) Vs structure down to 70 m depth is obtained. We successfully achieve an improved Vs30 (the time-averaged shear-wave velocity in the top 30 m) model with higher spatial-resolution and reliability compared to the existing community model for the area. We also explore the potential for utilizing DAS earthquake events for site amplification estimation. The preliminary results reveal a clear anti-correlation between the approximated site response and the Vs30 profile. Our results indicate the potential utility of DAS deployed on dark fiber for near-surface characterization in appropriate contexts.

Background: The utilization of three-dimensional (3D) surface imaging for facial anthropometry is a significant asset for patients undergoing maxillofacial surgery. Notably, there have been recent advancements in smartphone technology that enable 3D surface imaging.In this study, anthropometric assessments of the face were performed using a smartphone and a sophisticated 3D surface imaging system. Methods: 30 healthy volunteers (15 females and 15 males) were included in the study. An iPhone 14 Pro (Apple Inc., USA) using the application 3D Scanner App (Laan Consulting Corp., USA) and the Vectra M5 (Canfield Scientific, USA) were employed to create 3D surface models. For each participant, 19 anthropometric measurements were conducted on the 3D surface models. Subsequently, the anthropometric measurements generated by the two approaches were compared. The statistical techniques employed included the paired t-test, paired Wilcoxon signed-rank test, Bland–Altman analysis, and calculation of the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: All measurements showed excellent agreement between smartphone-based and Vectra M5-based measurements (ICC between 0.85 and 0.97). Statistical analysis revealed no statistically significant differences in the central tendencies for 17 of the 19 linear measurements. Despite the excellent agreement found, Bland–Altman analysis revealed that the 95% limits of agreement between the two methods exceeded ±3 mm for the majority of measurements. Conclusion: Digital facial anthropometry using smartphones can serve as a valuable supplementary tool for surgeons, enhancing their communication with patients. However, the proposed data suggest that digital facial anthropometry using smartphones may not yet be suitable for certain diagnostic purposes that require high accuracy.

A great number of chemical and mechanical phenomena, ranging from catalysis to friction, are dictated by the atomic-scale structure and properties of material surfaces. Yet, the principal tools utilized to characterize surfaces at the atomic level rely on strict environmental conditions such as ultrahigh vacuum and low temperature. Results obtained under such well-controlled, pristine conditions bear little relevance to the great majority of processes and applications that often occur under ambient conditions. Here, we report true atomic-resolution surface imaging via conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM) under ambient conditions, performed at high scanning speeds. Our approach delivers atomic-resolution maps on a variety of material surfaces that comprise defects including single atomic vacancies. We hypothesize that atomic resolution can be enabled by either a confined, electrically conductive pathway or an individual, atomically sharp asperity at the tip-sample contact. Using our method, we report the capability of in situ charge state manipulation of defects on MoS2 and the observation of an exotic electronic effect: room-temperature charge ordering in a thin transition metal carbide (TMC) crystal (i.e., an MXene), α-Mo2C. Our findings demonstrate that C-AFM can be utilized as a powerful tool for atomic-resolution imaging and manipulation of surface structure and electronics under ambient conditions, with wide-ranging applicability.

Linac-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) with planning target volume (PTV) margins <1 mm has become increasingly common in recent years. Optical surface imaging for surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) is often used for intra-fraction motion monitoring during these treatments to facilitate the use of a smaller PTV margin by providing real-time quantitative patient positioning information. However, rotating the couch introduces errors to SGRT-reported translations and rotations that can be problematic for SRS treatments with non-coplanar arcs and very small PTV margins. This work presents a novel approach for decreasing the magnitude of these errors by performing a pre-treatment dry run and capturing reference surfaces with the SGRT system at each couch angle included in the treatment plan. Time from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to treatment initiation and total treatment session time were reviewed for 30 single-fraction brain SRS cases treated using this technique to determine the effect of including the dry run on treatment session times. Out of the 30 cases treated between April 2023 and January 2024, 23 treatments required only a single CBCT prior to treatment, with no additional mid-treatment imaging required to verify patient positioning after motion. The median time between CBCT and treatment initiation was 7.98 minutes (interquartile range (IQR) = 7.28 to 8.93 minutes). The median time from CBCT to treatment completion was 15.43 minutes (IQR = 13.67 to 21.97 minutes). In the six patients that required one additional CBCT, the treatment session times ranged from 24.32 to 32.83 minutes. There was one patient who required three mid-treatment CBCTs, and the treatment session time was 67.87 minutes. Incorporating the pre-treatment dry run with the acquisition of reference surfaces at each treatment angle decreased errors in SGRT-reported translations and rotations associated with couch rotation without significantly increasing treatment session times., Competing Interests: Human subjects: Consent for treatment and open access publication was obtained or waived by all participants in this study. Digitalizing all aspects of dental care is a contemporary approach to ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes. Ongoing advancements in 3D face acquisition have been driven by continuous research on craniofacial structures and treatment effects. An array of 3D surface-imaging systems are currently available for generating photorealistic 3D facial images. However, choosing a purpose-specific system is challenging for clinicians due to variations in accuracy, reliability, resolution, and portability. Therefore, this review aims to provide clinicians and researchers with an overview of currently used or potential 3D surface imaging technologies and systems for 3D face acquisition in craniofacial research and daily practice. Through a comprehensive literature search, 71 articles meeting the inclusion criteria were included in the qualitative analysis, investigating the hardware, software, and operational aspects of these systems. The review offers updated information on 3D surface imaging technologies and systems to guide clinicians in selecting an optimal 3D face acquisition system. While some of these systems have already been implemented in clinical settings, others hold promise. Furthermore, driven by technological advances, novel devices will become cost-effective and portable, and will also enable accurate quantitative assessments, rapid treatment simulations, and improved outcomes.

New satellite constellations for broadband Internet service emerge as promising illuminators of opportunity for the of passive radar (PR) applications. Their wideband signals, high power flux at ground level, and theoretical global availability anticipate ameliorated performance compared to preexisting satellite-based PRs. On the other hand, the constellation deployment in low Earth orbits generates favorable movements for the radar imaging of the Earth's surface. In this article, the Starlink constellation is considered for the formation of passive SAR images. The Starlink datalink concerning the data transmission from the satellite to the user's terminal is selected as the illumination signal. The users' downlink signal characteristics are studied using experimental data from a dedicated measurement campaign, confirming its suitability for radar applications. Then, the time-variant radar geometry and the passive SAR processing scheme are described. A back projection radar image formation approach is selected to tackle the complexity of the bistatic geometry. The system validation is performed in a second measurement campaign concerning dual-channel measurements using the Starlink-based PR demonstrator developed at the Warsaw University of Technology. The first Starlink-based passive SAR images are obtained under direct satellite illumination of the PR deployment area and under adjacent-cell illumination conditions. The experimental results confirm the feasibility of exploiting Starlink transmissions for the formation of passive SAR images of urban areas.

Background: In direct-to-implant breast reconstruction, accurate preoperative breast volume estimation is crucial for surgeons to select the appropriate implant volume, considering the cosmetic outcomes during surgery. We proposed the prediction model for intraoperative implant volume based on the preoperative estimated volume of the contralateral breast obtained through a three-dimensional surface imaging system (3DSI) as surgeons usually choose the implant volume on the breast which should be reconstructed considering symmetricity with the contralateral breast., Methods: We enrolled 97 patients from our single institution who underwent unilateral mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction using smooth silicone implants between October 2021 and January 2023. Preoperatively, plastic surgeons measured the volume of the contralateral breast using the VECTRA XT 3D imaging system. Data on implant volume and the types of acellular dermal matrix used during surgery, determined by a single surgeon to ensure symmetry, were also collected. Linear regression analysis was utilized to construct the predictive model., Results: In the multiple linear regression analysis with preoperative contralateral breast volume, age, and body mass index as variables, the coefficient of determination of the model expressed as R squared (R 2 ) was 0.554, and except for age, the other variables were statistically significant. When replaced by mastectomy volume instead of age, R 2 increased to 0.723 and all variables were significant., Conclusions: 3DSI can be helpful for preoperative surgical planning and postoperative outcome simulation. Background Normative craniofacial anthropometry provides clinically important reference values used in the treatment of craniofacial conditions. Few objective datasets of normative data exist for children. Aim To establish normative data regarding craniofacial morphology changes with growth in children. Subjects and methods 3D surface images of the same group of healthy children aged 6 − 11 years old recruited from a Dallas school were taken annually between the years 2015 − 2020. Composite 3D cephalometric faces were created for boys and girls of each age. General and craniofacial anthropometric measurements were compared. Results Seven hundred ninety one individual stereophotogrammetric acquisitions were used (400 boys, 391 girls) taken from 180 children. Linear facial, orbital, nasal, and oral anthropometric measurements revealed a consistent increase in magnitude with age. Composite 3D face comparisons revealed prominent vertical and anteroposterior growth trends in the lower and upper facial regions. Conclusion This study presents a longitudinal 3D control dataset of the same group of children over a 6-year period that can serve as reference norms for facial growth values and trends in children aged 6–11 years. The composite 3D normative faces are available for clinical and research purposes upon request, which may be interrogated and measured according to user need and preference.

The 2017–2027 National Academies' Decadal Survey, Thriving on Our Changing Planet, recommended Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) as a “Designated Targeted Observable” (DO). The SBG DO is based on the need for capabilities to acquire global, high spatial resolution, visible to shortwave infrared (VSWIR; 380–2500 nm; ~30 m pixel resolution) hyperspectral (imaging spectroscopy) and multispectral midwave and thermal infrared (MWIR: 3–5 μm; TIR: 8–12 μm; ~60 m pixel resolution) measurements with sub-monthly temporal revisits over terrestrial, freshwater, and coastal marine habitats. To address the various mission design needs, an SBG Algorithms Working Group of multidisciplinary researchers has been formed to review and evaluate the algorithms applicable to the SBG DO across a wide range of Earth science disciplines, including terrestrial and aquatic ecology, atmospheric science, geology, and hydrology. Here, we summarize current state-of-the-practice VSWIR and TIR algorithms that use airborne or orbital spectral imaging observations to address the SBG DO priorities identified by the Decadal Survey: (i) terrestrial vegetation physiology, functional traits, and health; (ii) inland and coastal aquatic ecosystems physiology, functional traits, and health; (iii) snow and ice accumulation, melting, and albedo; (iv) active surface composition (eruptions, landslides, evolving landscapes, hazard risks); (v) effects of changing land use on surface energy, water, momentum, and carbon fluxes; and (vi) managing agriculture, natural habitats, water use/quality, and urban development. We review existing algorithms in the following categories: snow/ice, aquatic environments, geology, and terrestrial vegetation, and summarize the community-state-of-practice in each category. This effort synthesizes the findings of more than 130 scientists.

Abstract Background Surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) employs a non-invasive real-time optical surface imaging (OSI) technique for patient surface motion monitoring during radiotherapy. The main purpose of this study is to verify the real-time tracking accuracy of SGRT for respiratory motion and provide a fitting method to detect the time delay of gating. Methods A respiratory motion phantom was utilized to simulate respiratory motion using 17 cosine breathing pattern curves with various periods and amplitudes. The motion tracking of the phantom was performed by the Catalyst™ system. The tracking accuracy of the system (with period and amplitude variations) was evaluated by analyzing the adjusted coefficient of determination (A_R2) and root mean square error (RMSE). Furthermore, 13 actual respiratory curves, which were categorized into regular and irregular patterns, were selected and then simulated by the phantom. The Fourier transform was applied to the respiratory curves, and tracking accuracy was compared through the quantitative analyses of curve similarity using the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC). In addition, the time delay of amplitude-based respiratory-gating radiotherapy based on the OSI system with various beam hold times was tested using film dosimetry for the Elekta Versa-HD and Varian Edge linacs. A dose convolution-fitting method was provided to accurately measure the beam-on and beam-off time delays. Results A_R2 and RMSE for the cosine curves were 0.9990–0.9996 and 0.110–0.241 mm for periods ranging from 1 s to 10 s and 0.9990–0.9994 and 0.059–0.175 mm for amplitudes ranging from 3 mm to 15 mm. The PCC for the actual respiratory curves ranged from 0.9955 to 0.9994, which was not significantly affected by breathing patterns. For gating radiotherapy, the average beam-on and beam-off time delays were 1664 ± 72 and 25 ± 30 ms for Versa-HD and 303 ± 45 and 34 ± 25 ms for Edge, respectively. The time delay was relatively stable as the beam hold time increased. Conclusions The OSI technique provides high accuracy for respiratory motion tracking. The proposed dose convolution-fitting method can accurately measure the time delay of respiratory-gating radiotherapy. When the OSI technique is used for respiratory-gating radiotherapy, the time delay for the beam-on is considerably longer than the beam-off.

Abstract Background Three-dimensional Surface Imaging (3DSI) is a well-established method to objectively monitor morphological changes in the female breast in the field of plastic surgery. In contrast, in radiation oncology we are still missing effective tools, which can objectively and reproducibly assess and document adverse events in breast cancer radiotherapy within the framework of clinical studies. The aim of the present study was to apply structured-light technology as a non-invasive and objective approach for the documentation of cosmetic outcome and early effects of breast radiotherapy as a proof of principle. Methods Weekly 3DSI images of patients receiving either conventionally fractionated radiation treatment (CF-RT) or hypofractionated radiation treatment (HF-RT) were acquired during the radiotherapy treatment and clinical follow-up. The portable Artec Eva scanner (Artec 3D Inc., Luxembourg) recorded 3D surface images for the analysis of breast volumes and changes in skin appearance. Statistical analysis compared the impact of the two different fractionation regimens and the differences between the treated and the contralateral healthy breast. Results Overall, 38 patients and a total of 214 breast imaging sessions were analysed. Patients receiving CF-RT showed a significantly higher frequency of breast erythema compared to HF-RT (93.3% versus 34.8%, p = 0.003) during all observed imaging sessions. SUMMARY: We present a novel strategy for performing joint inversion with guided fuzzy c-means (GFCM) clustering coupling and apply it to electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ambient noise surface wave (ANSW) data. To accurately extract a priori clustering information, we use density peak clustering (DPC) rather than fuzzy c-means (FCM). The number and centres of resistivity and shear-wave velocity a priori clusters are extracted by DPC and then used to guide the joint inversion with the GFCM clustering coupling of ERT and ANSW data. Synthetic and field data are used to evaluate the flow and algorithm of DPC-GFCM clustering joint inversion. The results of synthetic examples show that the models recovered by the DPC-GFCM clustering joint inversion are nearly the same as the true models and are more accurate than those inverted using individual inversion and FCM-GFCM clustering joint inversion. In the field case, the depths of the stratigraphic interfaces shown in the resistivity and shear-wave velocity models inverted by DPC-GFCM clustering joint inversion are nearly consistent with those from the drilling data. In contrast, the strata recovered by the individual inversion and FCM-GFCM clustering joint inversion significantly differ from the drilling results. Both the synthetic and field examples verify the effectiveness of the DPC-GFCM clustering coupling method used for the joint inversion of ERT and ANSW data acquired from the near surface with strong heterogeneity. The interferometric imaging radar altimeter (InIRA) is a new generation radar altimeter, which can provide two-dimensional images of the sea surface topography at high resolution along a wide swath. This article proposes a method for the simulation of sea surface images measured by InIRA. First, the Pierson-Moskowitz wave spectrum and two-scale model are used to simulate the sea surface from which elevation data is to be acquired. This simulated sea surface is then divided into small triangular facets using Delaunay triangulation. Second, the backscattering cross sections of these small facets are calculated via application of quasi-mirror scattering theory, and the backscattering coefficient of the simulated region derived via coherent superposition. Third, system parameters are set, consistent with the basic principle of InIRA. Assuming that the signal transmitted is a linear frequency modulation pulse signal, the simulation images are then derived using the range Doppler and back projection algorithms. By inverting the interferometric phase diagram, elevation estimates can be derived, and compared with original simulated sea levels. This demonstrated accuracy within the centimeter range, verifying the correctness and feasibility of the proposed method.

Time-Of-Flight (TOF) computations are needed in all ultrasound imaging methods. In Non Destructive Testing (NDT), where ultrasound inspections are frequently done using a coupling medium between the transducer and the test piece, wave refraction complicates TOF computations and iterative methods are needed, which hinders frame rate. For fast imaging simple approximation methods are needed. In this work we propose a TOF fast approximation method for the particular case of sub-surface imaging.

Abstract Purpose To develop a novel approach to accurately verify patient set up in proton radiotherapy, especially for the verification of the nozzle – body surface air gap and source-to-skin distance (SSD), the consistency and accuracy of which is extremely important in proton treatment. Methods Patient body surfaces can be captured and monitored with the optical surface imaging system during radiation treatment for improved intrafraction accuracy. An in-house software package was developed to reconstruct the patient body surface in the treatment position from the optical surface imaging reference capture and to calculate the corresponding nozzle – body surface air gap and SSD. To validate this method, a mannequin was scanned on a CT simulator and proton plans were generated for a Mevion S250 Proton machine with 20 gantry/couch angle combinations, as well as two different snout sizes, in the Varian Eclipse Treatment Planning Systems (TPS). The surface generated in the TPS from the CT scan was imported into the optical imaging system as an RT Structure for the purpose of validating and establishing a benchmark for ground truth comparison. The optical imaging surface reference capture was acquired at the treatment setup position after orthogonal kV imaging to confirm the positioning. The air gaps and SSDs calculated with the developed method from the surface captured at the treatment setup position (VRT surface) and the CT based surface imported from the TPS were compared to those calculated in TPS. The same approach was also applied to 14 clinical treatment fields for 10 patients to further validate the methodology. Results The air gaps and SSDs calculated from our program agreed well with the corresponding values derived from the TPS. For the phantom results, using the CT surface, the absolute differences in the air gap were 0.45 mm ± 0.33 mm for the small snout, and 0.51 mm ± 0.49 mm for the large snout, and the absolute differences in SSD were 0.68 mm ± 0.42 mm regardless of snout size. Using the VRT surface, the absolute differences in air gap were 1.17 mm ± 1.17 mm and 2.1 mm ± 3.09 mm for the small and large snouts, respectively, and the absolute differences in SSD were 0.81 mm ± 0.45 mm. Similarly, for patient data, using the CT surface, the absolute differences in air gap were 0.42 mm ± 0.49 mm, and the absolute differences in SSD were 1.92 mm ± 1.4 mm. Using the VRT surface, the absolute differences in the air gap were 2.35 mm ± 2.3 mm, and the absolute differences in SSD were 2.7 mm ± 2.17 mm. Conclusion These results showed the feasibility and robustness of using an optical surface imaging approach to conveniently determine the air gap and SSD in proton treatment, providing an accurate and efficient way to confirm the target depth at treatment.

Abstract Implementing 3D surface imaging camera systems into miniaturized devices for a variety of 3D applications such as movement recognition, object sensing, and 3D endoscopy has received great attention over the past decade. Recently, various MEMS techniques enabled the fabrication of key optical elements for 3D surface imaging with compact size, reasonable cost, and high yield. This article will overview the principles of major categories of 3D surface imaging techniques and their applications using optical MEMS devices for compact 3D surface imaging camera.

In this article, porous GaN distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) were fabricated by epitaxy of undoped/doped multilayers followed by electrochemical etching. We present backscattered electron scanning electron microscopy (BSE-SEM) for sub-surface plan-view imaging, enabling efficient, non-destructive pore morphology characterization. In mesoporous GaN DBRs, BSE-SEM images the same branching pores and Voronoi-like domains as scanning transmission electron microscopy. In microporous GaN DBRs, micrographs were dominated by first porous layer features (45 nm to 108 nm sub-surface) with diffuse second layer (153 nm to 216 nm sub-surface) contributions. The optimum primary electron landing energy (LE) for image contrast and spatial resolution in a Zeiss GeminiSEM 300 was approximately 20 keV. BSE-SEM detects porosity ca. 295 nm sub-surface in an overgrown porous GaN DBR, yielding low contrast that is still first porous layer dominated. Imaging through a ca. 190 nm GaN cap improves contrast. We derived image contrast, spatial resolution, and information depth expectations from semi-empirical expressions. These theoretical studies echo our experiments as image contrast and spatial resolution can improve with higher LE, plateauing towards 30 keV. BSE-SEM is predicted to be dominated by the uppermost porous layer's uppermost region, congruent with experimental analysis. The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) recently published the report of Task Group (TG) 302, which provides recommendations on acceptance, commissioning, and ongoing routine quality assurance (QA) for surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) systems. One of the recommended monthly QA tests is a dynamic localization accuracy test. This work aimed to develop an automated procedure for monthly SGRT dynamic localization QA. An anthropomorphic head phantom was rigidly attached to the 6-dof couch of a TrueBeam linac. TrueBeam Developer Mode was used to take an MV image of the phantom at the starting position, then automatically drive the couch through a series of translations and rotations, taking an MV image after each translation. The Identify SGRT system monitored the motion of the phantom surface from the starting position. Translations assessed on MV images were compared to translations reported in trajectory log files and Identify log files. Rotations were compared between trajectory log files and Identify log files. Three experiments were conducted. None of the translations or rotations from any experiment exceeded the tolerance values for stereotactic ablative body radiation therapy (SABR) recommended by AAPM TG-142. Maximum deviations from the expected translation values from MV imaging, trajectory log files, and Identify log files were -0.94mm, -0.11mm, and -0.78mm, respectively. Maximum deviations from the expected rotation values from trajectory log files and Identify log files were 0.01 and -0.2 degrees, respectively. Optical surface imaging is a nonradiographic, noninvasive technology for continuous localization of patients during radiation therapy. Surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) has been applied to many treatment sites including breast, intracranial, head and neck, and extremities. SGRT enables a reduction of initial setup variability, provides verification of immobilization continuously during treatment including at noncoplanar linac gantry angles, and provides dynamic surface information for use in gated and breath-hold treatment techniques, all of which can permit reductions in the margins required to account for target localization uncertainty. Ancillary benefits from surface imaging include the ability to use immobilization techniques that confer greater comfort to patients, a reduction in imaging dose through reduced radiographic localization requirements, and improvements to the speed, efficiency, and safety of clinical workflows. This review will describe the objectives of SGRT, review the commercially available surface imaging systems, and provide an overview of SGRT applications by treatment site. Limitations and future applications of surfacing imaging systems are also discussed.
