L’examen du livre « L’archéologie demain » révèle que toutes les grandes orientations qui ont guidé nos travaux jusqu’à ce jour sont déjà en place en 1986. Les trois décennies qui suivent vont s’attacher à approfondir ces notions théoriques à travers un certain nombre de lectures et d’expériences de terrain. Les préoccupations sont alors plus anthropologiques que strictement archéologiques.Le modèle biologique est étendu à toutes les disciplines étudiant des phénomènes ayant une dimension historique. La confrontation de l’essai d’épistémologie de Testart (1991), orienté vers l’approche nomologique, et du livre de Passeron (1991), consacré au caractère non poppérien du raisonnement sociologique, permet d’enrichir le modèle des relations entre science et histoire.La réflexion sur les relations entre science et littérature et entre pensée savante et pensée vulgaire a essentiellement été consacrée aux problèmes de la reconstitution iconographique des scènes de la vie préhistorique.Diverses expériences portant sur la promotion du logicisme de Jean-Claude Gardin montrent que la communauté scientifique n’est pas encore prête à accepter ce genre de formalisation, alors que nous restons persuadés de l’utilité d’une telle approche.Nos recherches sur les traditions céramiques de la boucle du Niger au Mali 1986-2005 ont permis de mettre en pratique notre conception théorique de l’ethnoarchéologie. Enfin nos derniers travaux explorent aujourd’hui les limites de l’investigation ethnoarchéologique à travers de nouvelles recherches consacrées au mégalithisme africain (Éthiopie, Sahara, Sénégal). A study of my book « L’archéologie demain » reveals that the major concerns that have guided my work to date were already in place in 1986. During the next three decades these theoretical notions were improved by numerous readings and field experiences. The concerns therefore were anthropological rather than strictly archaeological.The biological model was widened to incorporate all the fields of study involving historical aspects. The comparison of the essay on epistemology written by Testart (1991), which took a nomological approach, and of the book written by Passeron (1991), devoted to the non-popperian character of sociological thought, makes it possible to enrich the model by looking at the relationships between science and history.The reflections on the relationships between science and literature and between scholarly thought and primitive thought focus mainly on the problems linked to the iconographic reconstruction of scenes of prehistoric life.Various experiences relating to the promotion of Jean-Claude Gardin’s logicism revealed that the scientific community is not yet willing to accept this kind of formalisation although I still believe such an approach to be useful.My research on pottery traditions of the Niger bend carried out in Mali between 1986 and 2005 made it possible to put into practice my theoretical concept of ethnoarchaeology. Finally, my latest work currently explores the limits of ethnoarchaeological investigation using new research devoted to African megalithism (Ethiopia, Sahara, Senegal).

L’article s’articule en trois volets.1. On rappelle d’abord ce qu’est l’analyse cladistique en donnant les raisons qui nous permettent de proposer une adaptation de cette méthodologie à l’anthropologie.2. On tente d’appliquer cet outil à l’évolution des sociétés wolof du Sénégal, à partir du livre d’Abdulai-Bara Diop, La société wolof, tradition et changement : les systèmes d’inégalité et de domination (1981), qui fournit une information de première importance sur la nature des sociétés mégalithiques sénégambiennes sur lesquelles nous travaillons.3. On confronte ces résultats à ce que nous pouvons dire aujourd’hui des sociétés ouest-africaines précoloniales. Cette comparaison de deux classifications effectuées à des échelles géographiques différentes permet de tester les mérites et les limites du type d’approche.Trois grands ensembles se dessinent, que nous nommons ici sociétés de prestige, sociétés proto-étatiques segmentaires et sociétés étatiques de classes. L’embranchement des sociétés dites lignagères sensu stricto reste, selon les principe de la cladistique, un stade hypothétique qu’aucune source historique ne permet d’identifier concrètement.Les classifications obtenues sont des « modèles », soit des régularités structurales insistant sur la dynamique de transformation des caractéristiques. En tant que régularités, les modèles obtenus peuvent déboucher sur une analyse anthropologique des mécanismes assurant la transformation des sociétés ou, à l’opposé, s’actualiser dans des scénarios historiques locaux relevant d’approches historiques ciblées. The article has three parts.1. The first one reminds what the cladistic perspective is, and why we believe it an useful alternative method for the study of cultural change over the “longue durée”.2. The second one applies this perspective to the evolution of Senegal Wolof societies, as they are described by Abdulai-Bara Diop in « La société wolof, tradition et changement: les systèmes d’inégalité et de domination » (1981), a book containing prime information on the nature of megalithic Senegambian societies on which we work.3. The third one confronts the outcome with what we know of precolonial West-African societies, i. e. a classification deriving from another geographical scale. This two-dimensional view allows us to test the strenghts and limits of such a cladistic perspective.So, three large categories of societies emerge: prestige societies, segmented proto-state societies, and and class state societies. The root of so-called lineage societies stricto sensu remains, in phase with cladistic principles, a hypothetical link that no historical evidence can substantiate.Such classifiacations are « models », i. e. structural regularities emphasizing the dynamics of transformation of the features. As such, they can generate an anthropological analysis of the mechanisms by which societies evolve, or on the contrary, materialize into local historical scenarios related to targeted historical perspectives.

In two great caves decorated in the Paleolithic : Montespan and Le Tuc d’Audoubert (out of which a river flows) there were found headless snake skeletons. One of them was a Colubrid, a particularly long snake. The fact that the skeletons are headless may reflect the snake’s dangerousness : the dangerous animals, like bison and lions, were often represented arrowed or headless, for instance at the Tuc d’Audoubert cave. To understand the meaning of what was possibly an important ritual I have tried to statistically reconstruct the primal European Paleolithic folklore about the Snake.The software Paup4.0a147 and Mesquite2.75 were used to analyze a database of 42 mythological narratives concerning snakes (available here : http://ruthenia.ru/folklore/berezkin) and 22 geographical areas, each of them possessing more than ten narratives. The use of such a database was justified by a previous phylogenetic study of folktales concerning wild animals (d’Huy 2015) that showed a low correlation between the distribution of folk tales and geographical associations among populations, and established a parallel between the structure of phylogenetic trees built from folk tales and what we know of the first human migrations ; moreover, these phylogenetic trees allowed the reconstruction of the content of ancient tales corpora, e.g. Paleolithic.In this paper, a NeigbhorJoining (retention index : 0,52; fig.1), an UPGMA (retention index : 0,48; fig.2) and a majority rules consensus (RI : 0.54; fig.3) trees were build. The organization of these trees are similar to those obtained by the analysis of three other different databases : the first is about the stories where a rainbow snake drinks water on the ground, or in the sky (d’Huy on 2016 ; fig.4) ; the second, the fight against the dragon, based on many ethnic group’s beliefs (d’Huy 2014a ; fig.5) ; the third is based on some geographical areas and concerns the zoem of the dragon (d’Huy, 2013 ; fig.6). The results from these four independent, unrelated databases mostly coincide with respect to the topology of branching, and converge to strong conclusions about the evolution of snake folklore.Four almost identical trees have been reconstructed from the databases of the present paper (fig. 1, 2 and 3) and of d’Huy 2013 (fig.6). The human folklore about snakes seems to have left Africa in two steps. The first wave reached Oceania and then South America through the South and Southeast coast of Asia. This reconstructed wave is in agreement with the diffusion of the particular motif where a snake rainbow drinks water on the ground, or in the sky (fig. 4). Another wave left Africa to the Americas through central Asia (?). Finally, a late wave covered the major part of Eurasia, perhaps soon after the late glacial maximum. These two last waves are reflected in the two-step diffusion of the fight against the dragon (fig.5). The results obtained from four different databases at distinct levels (the diffusion of a set of narratives, a set of traits about a zoem, a mythological motif, a narrative structure where different story elements serve the same narrative plot) using different levels of analysis (geographical area, cultural area, cultural groups) and different statistical tools (including NeigbhorJoining, UPGMA, Bayesian algorithms, parcimony, consensus) all fit the same scenario.Once the structural integrity of the NeigbhorJoining, the UPGMA and the consensus trees controlled by the three independent sources of evidence, it is important to note the strong closeness between the structure of these mythological trees and what we know about the first human migrations. It seems possible to accurately reconstruct the first human migrations from the diffusion of sets of folk tales, or of given mythological narratives, by using statistical tools.Using all phylogenetic trees studied in this paper and monitoring the results by observing the congruence between the results and the reconstructions obtained from two completely different databases (d’Huy 2013, 2014a, b) at the same geographical level, it becomes possible to securely reconstruct various features of the first European folklore about snakes. During the European Paleolithic period, people imagined mythological snakes being of natural size (100 % probability), or giant (75 % probability), possessing horns on the head (83 % probability) and having one or many heads (100 % probability) ; they sometimes possessed a diamond or magic treasure, could fly and produce rain and/or thunderstorms (75 % probability) and could fight against the thunder or against a giant bird (66.66 % probability). They could take the form of a rainbow (75 % probability). They were dangerous. They could prevent people from reaching water : permitting them, most of the time, only in exchange for sacrifices or valuable goods (100 % probability). Snakes were not only immortal, but were responsible death, for the mortality of man (100 % probability). And so it is possible that the headless snake skeletons of Montespan and of Le Tuc d’Audoubert reflect a ritual used to control rain and water by neutralizing, symbolically, the dangerous master : the dispenser of this precious element.This reconstructed myth may well have been illustrated by a Paleolithic image found in the cave of La Madeleine, in Dordogne (France), dated to the Magdalenian period. This image (fig.7, 8), possibly related to water, shows an apparently dead snake thrown on his back, passive, on which a man with a stick on his shoulder turns his back. Significantly, the heads of two horses are added. Several current mythological motifs (shown to be, in fact, very old) and the comparison with other Paleolithic images (e.g. fig. 9) may give us an explanation. The horses as auxiliaries in the fight against the monster and the passivity of the defeated snake are motifs that are found among the first Indo-European narratives. Moreover, water is often associated with snakes in Paleolithic images (and are among, once again, the first Indo-European narratives). This second part of the paper is meant as independent support, and does not use statistics., Dans la grotte ornée de Montespan et du Tuc d’Audoubert, toutes deux traversées d’une rivière qui sort de leur porche, ont été trouvées des serpents acéphales, déposés de main d’homme au Paléolithique supérieur. Leur acéphalie témoignerait de leur dangerosité supposée. Afin de comprendre le sens de ce rituel, j’ai tenté de reconstruire le proto-folklore entourant les serpents au Paléolithique supérieur, et ce en utilisant des outils phylogénétiques. Les résultats convergent avec ceux obtenus à partir de quatre autres bases de données. C’est la première fois qu’une telle consilience est mise en évidence en phylogénétique des mythes. Le folklore entourant les ophidiens semble avoir suivi les premières routes migratoires de l’humanité. L’arbre rend aussi possible la reconstruction du folklore paléolithique du serpent en Eurasie. Si on accepte les résultats obtenus, les rituels de Montespan et du Tuc d’Audoubert auraient pu servir à contrôler l’eau, en neutralisant symboliquement le dangereux et long serpent dispensateur de l’élément liquide. Ces résultats trouvent par ailleurs un écho dans plusieurs images rupestres et se voient prolongés par certains motifs très anciens de la mythologie européenne.

The phylogeny and taxonomy of the whole family Hippopotamidae is in need of reconsideration, the present confusion obstructing palaeoecology and palaeobiogeography studies of these Neogene mammals. The revision of the Hippopotamidae initiated here deals with the last 8 Myr of African and Asian species. The first thorough cladistic analysis of the family is presented here. The outcome of this analysis, including 37 morphological characters coded for 15 extant and fossil taxa, as well as non-coded features of mandibular morphology, was used to reconstruct broad outlines of hippo phylogeny. Distinct lineages within the paraphyletic genus Hexaprotodon are recognized and characterized. In order to harmonize taxonomy and phylogeny, two new genera are created. The genus name Choeropsis is re-validated for the extant Liberian hippo. The nomen Hexaprotodon is restricted to the fossil lineage mostly known in Asia, but also including at least one African species. The genus Hippopotamus is confirmed. These changes represent substantial advances for understanding the evolutionary history of the Hippopotamidae, and provide a new framework for future studies. © 2005 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2005, 143, 1–26.

The dragon, defined as a hybrid animal which one of the parties is that of a snake and is related to water, is known everywhere on the planet. We studied how people imagine the dragon by analyzing 69 features in 23 regions of the world. To do this, we used tools belonging to evolutionary biology (Bayesian tree parsimony, NeighborNet) and statistics (principal component analysis, principal coordinates, non-metric multidimensional scaling). These tools have allowed us to demonstrate the existence of a historical link between multiple representations of the dragon motif whose evolution follows some of the great migrations that allowed the settlement of the planet. We then statistically reconstructed proto-narrative, first during the coming out of Africa, then in Paleolithic Europe, and put it in parallel with the headless snakes discovered in the caves of Montespan and Tuc of Audoubert in French Pyrenees. Finally, we proposed a neural mechanism able to explain the permanence of the pattern through the millennia., Le dragon, défini comme un animal hybride dont l'une des parties est celle d'un serpent et qui est lié à l'eau, se retrouve partout sur la planète. Nous avons étudié la façon dont les peuples imaginent le dragon en étudiant 69 traits dans 23 régions du monde. Pour ce faire, nous avons employé des outils appartenant à la biologie évolutive (arbre bayésien, parcimonie, NeighborNet) et aux statistiques (analyses en composantes principales, en coordonnées principales, en positionnement multidimensionnel non métrique). Ces différents outils nous ont permis de mettre en évidence l'existence d'un lien historique unissant les multiples représentations du dragon, motif dont l'évolution suit certaines des grandes migrations ayant permis le peuplement de la planète. Nous avons alors reconstruit statistiquement le proto-récit, d'abord lors de sa sortie d'Afrique, puis dans l'Europe paléolithique, et l'avons mis en parallèle avec les couleuvres acéphales découvertes dans les grottes de Montespan et du Tuc d'Audoubert. Enfin, nous avons proposé un mécanisme neuronal permettant d'expliquer la permanence du motif à travers les millénaires.

International audience; Within phylogenetics, two methods are known to implement cladistics: parsimony or maximum parsimony (MP) and three-item analysis (3ia). Despite the lack of suitable software, 3ia is occasionally used in systematic, and more regularly, in historical biogeography. Here, we present LisBeth, the first and only phylogenetic/biogeographic program freely available that uses the 3ia approach and offer some insights into its theoretical propositions. LisBeth does not rely on the conventional taxon/character matrix. Instead, characters are represented as rooted trees. LisBeth performs 3ia analyses based on maximum congruence of three-item statements and calculates the intersection tree (which differs from usual consensus). In biogeography, it applies the transparent method to handle widespread taxa and implements paralogy-free subtree analysis to remove redundant distributions. For the sake of interoperability, LisBeth may import/export characters from/to matrix in NEXUS format, allowing comparison with other cladistic programs. LisBeth also imports phylogenetic characters from Xper2 knowledge bases.; En cladistique, ne bénéficiant d’aucun logiciel adéquat, l’analyse à trois éléments (3ia) est moins répandue que la parcimonie (MP), bien que fréquemment utilisée en biogéographie historique. LisBeth est le premier et unique logiciel de 3ia pour la phylogénie et la biogéographie, disponible gratuitement, et développé à partir de propositions théoriques déjà publiées et originales. LisBeth ne repose pas sur la représentation matricielle conventionnelle, les caractères étant des arbres racinés dont sont issues les hypothèses à trois éléments, parmi lesquelles LisBeth recherche la congruence maximale. LisBeth reconstruit un arbre qui diffère des consensus habituels : l’arbre d’intersection. En biogéographie, la « méthode transparente » et « l’analyse des sous-arbres libres de paralogie » sont implémentées pour gérer les taxons à distributions larges et/ou redondantes. Dans un souci d’interopérabilité, LisBeth peut importer/exporter des matrices de caractères au format NEXUS, rendant ainsi comparables les différentes approches cladistiques. Un import existe aussi à partir des bases de connaissances Xper2.

L'objectif de ce livre est d'expliquer en détail la démarche de l'astrocladistique aussi bien d'un point de vue conceptuel que d'un point de vue pratique, afin que le lecteur puisse ainsi non seulement effectuer ses propres analyses, mais puisse également les interpréter.L'astrocladistique est une thématique que je développe depuis 2001. Il s'agit d'appliquer à l'astrophysique des méthodes phylogénétiques et d'analyse de distance multivariée. C'est une approche totalement innovante, multidisciplinaire, qui a nécessité une longue démarche intellectuelle ainsi que la mise au point de concepts et définitions indispensables à l'utilisation concrète des outils développés par ailleurs. Les multiples articles publiés dans différentes disciplines ne reflètent que superficiellement ou ponctuellement cette démarche.

This contribution aims to focus on various descriptions and theories of the segmental inventory and distributional constraints of the phonology of Tu'un Savi (Mixtec). The Oto-Manguean languages are reputed to be among the most complex of Meso-America due to the intricacy of their surface forms. Mixtec (known as Tu'un Savi or Ñuu Savi by its speakers) is part of the Mixtecan sub-family, which includes Trique, Cuicatec and probably also Amuzgo (Longacre, 1957, 1961; Longacre & Millon, 1961), belonging to the eastern branch of the Oto-Manguean family of languages. Varieties of Mixtec offer up such degrees of differentiation that we are tempted to see Mixtec as a further sub-family of Mixtecan rather than simply posit dialectal variation within a single language. Using the work of Josserand (1983) on the dialectal network of Mixtec along with a database combining etymons and a selection of cognate lists from Longacre (1957), Bradley & Josserand (1982), Josserand (1983), and Dürr (1987), we propose a revision of the data through the eyes of the more modern phonological theory of Feature Geometry, enabling us to reach a certain number of conclusions concerning the complexity of the phonological inventory of the modern Mixtec languages. Feature Geometry (Clements 1985; Clements & Hume 1996) is a model for phonological typology aiming to simplify the structure of phonological categories into natural classes and features subject to hierarchical relations and interactions. It allows us to understand and describe what appears to be a high degree of diversification in languages via a limited set of parameters. Without entering into a debate on exactly which parameters should form this set and exactly how they should be organized, we intend to demonstrate in this paper how a system of apparent great phonological complexity, such as that of Mixtec, benefits from a Feature Geometry analysis, revealing a simplified, coordinated set of modules with relations of (a)symmetry of variable geometry. We will try to define how a complicated system with features of sonority and of tension, along with glottal, nasal, and labial features can be simplified and redefined; from the consonant system of 21 phonemes reported in the literature for a particular variant of Tu'un Savi (Peñoles Mixtec, Mixteca Alta, Suárez 1983: 38), we will recover only seven (or eight) underlying categories. This approach would like to bring to the forefront the value and possibilities of a theory such as Feature Geometry, and the importance of the simplicity/complexity of phonological inventories for typology. The Oto-Manguean languages happens to be a privileged observatory, contributing to the understanding of the world's languages., Le présent article propose une synthèse critique de diverses théories concernant l'inventaire segmental et les contraintes distributionnelles qui structurent le système phonologique du tu'un savi (ou mixtec). Les langues otomangues sont réputées compter parmi les plus complexes de la Mésoamérique, en raison du caractère compact des réalisations de surface (nasalisation, coalescences, tons ponctuels et à contours, etc.). Le mixtec - que les locuteurs préfèrent désormais la dénomination de tu'un savi ou de ñuu savi - est une composante de la sous-famille mixtécane, qui inclut le trique, le cuicatec et probablement aussi l'amuzgo (Longacre 1957, 1961; Longacre & Millon 1961), langues qui appartiennent toutes à la branche orientale de la famille otomangue. La variation interne du mixtec à elle seule est si intense qu'on serait tenté de considérer cette langue davantage comme une sous-famille au sein de l'ensemble mixtecan plutôt qu'un simple réseau dialectal. L'analyse présentée ici revisite les données de Josserand (1983) sur la texture (notamment, la classification) du réseau dialectal tu'un savi, à l'aide d'une base de données qui associe des listes de mots et des étymons compilés par Longacre (1957), Bradley & Josserand (1982), Josserand (1983), and Dürr (1987), en utilisant le dispositif de la géométrie des traits. Cette synthèse critique aboutit à un ensemble de conclusions concernant la dialectique de simplicité et de complexité du système phonologique du tu'un savi envisagé du point de vue du diasystème, et de la nature des inventaires segmentaux en tenant compte de phonotypes sous-jacents. La géométrie des traits (Clements 1985; Clements & Hume 1996) est un modèle d'analyse de la structure interne des segments et des interactions entre les constituants subordonnés aux racines des représentations phonologiques, qui recherche une certaine parcimonie dans la délimitation des classes naturelles. En tant que telle, la géométrie des traits permet de comprendre et de décrire ce qui à première vue apparaît comme un ensemble hautement diversifié d'objets phonologiques, à travers le prisme d'une modélisation réflexive, parcimonieuse, visant à alléger les représentations des structures et des processus ou des contraintes. Elle permet un degré de généralisation suffisant pour rendre compte à l'aide de quelques paramètres simples d'un ensemble de processus de diversification en apparence complexes, caractéristiques du tu'un savi et d'autres langues otomangue. Sans chercher pour autant à trancher dans le débat au sujet de quelle modélisation conviendrait le mieux au tu'un savi en particulier, nous tenterons à travers l'étude des données de cette langue, de montrer en quoi la géométrie des traits permet de mettre en perspective des niveaux de structuration d'un diasystème en apparence foisonnant comme celui du tu'un savi, selon une logique de géométrie variable de la spécification de traits, à titre d'étude de cas en typologie phonologique. A cette fin, nous tenterons de définir comment un système qui semble mêler des critères relevant de l'échelle de sonorité, de répartition autosegmentale de la glottalité et de la nasalité, et de contraintes liées à la labialité et à la palatalité, peut être réordonné en un ensemble d'options portant sur la spécification de traits. Nous montrerons comment un inventaire consonantique de 21 segments, comme celui du tu'un Savi de Peñoles, de la Haute Mixteca, présenté dans un manuel de linguistique mésoaméricaine (Suárez 1983: 38), ne fait probablement intervenir guère plus de 7 ou 8 phonotypes sous-jacents, si l'on envisage cet inventaire à l'aide d'une modélisation fondée sur la spécification de traits. De ce point de vue, les avantages de la géométrie des traits sont grands pour saisir la dynamique de simplicité et de complexité des inventaires phonologiques, en termes de typologie des catégories fonctionnelles dans les langues du monde, à travers des logiques de spécification de traits dans des systèmes observables, dans toute leur extension diasystémique. Les langues otomangues s'avèrent être un observatoire privilégié de cette dialectique, dont les enjeux sont grands à l'heure de la constitution de bases de données à l'échelle mondiale, afin de rappeler que les données sont par définition construites et jamais définitivement acquises, en fonction de théories plus ou moins explicites. Expliciter et discuter les prémisses de toute description s'avère à ce titre un exercice des plus salutaires pour approcher des valeurs de vérité relative en typologie phonologique, selon une logique de découverte popperienne.

Il n’existe actuellement aucun consensus concernant la taxinomie et la constitution de l’hypodigme d’Homo habilis Leakey et al. 1964. Quatre hypothèses majeures sont aujourd’hui avancées à partir des restes crâniens et mandibulaires des spécimens attribués classiquement à Homo habilis sensu lato : (1) tous les spécimens appartiennent à un seul et même taxon : Homo habilis ; (2) deux espèces peuvent être identifiées dans ce groupe : Homo habilis sensu stricto et Homo rudolfensis ; (3) ces spécimens n’appartiennent pas au genre Homo mais au genre Australopithecus ; (4) les spécimens de l’espèce rudolfensis devraient être mis dans le genre Kenyanthropus. Le but de cette étude est de réévaluer de façon critique la variabilité au sein de cet ensemble fossile du Plio-Pléistocène et de tester si les spécimens appartiennent bien au genre Homo. Deux types d’étude ont été entrepris : une comparaison morphologique et une analyse cladistique. Dans cette dernière analyse, l’Unité Taxinomique Opérationnelle (OTU) est constituée par le spécimen et non l’espèce, en l’absence de consensus concernant l’attribution taxinomique des spécimens fossiles étudiés. Ces analyses portent sur les pièces originales provenant d’Éthiopie, du Kenya, de Tanzanie, du Malawi et de République d’Afrique du sud. L’étude morphologique permet de mettre en évidence une variabilité considérable au sein des premiers représentants du genre Homo. Deux espèces peuvent être définies au sein de cet ensemble : habilis et rudolfensis. L’analyse cladistique des 122 caractères crâniens montre l’appartenance de ces deux espèces au genre Homo et non aux genres Australopithecus ou Kenyanthropus. No consensus has been achieved concerning the taxonomic significance of the species Homo habilis. Four main hypotheses have been advanced: (1) the specimens from Olduvai, East Turkana and Omo belong to the same palaeospecies: Homo habilis sensu lato; (2) the hypodigm is heterogenous; two species could be defined : Homo habilis sensu stricto and Homo rudolfensis; (3) these specimens do not belong to the genus Homo but to Australopithecus or (4) Kenyanthropus. The goal of this study is to critically re-evaluate the hypotheses concerning the taxonomy of the specimens attributed to early Homo, and to test whether they belong to the genus Homo or to another genus. A morphological study and numerical cladistic analyses on 122 morphological characteristics were carried out on the original Plio-Pleistocene specimens. The Operational Taxonomic Unit (OTU) is defined by the fossil specimen rather than the species in the absence of consensus concerning the taxonomic attribution of the fossil specimens studied. Indeed, because no consensus concerning the hypodigm of Homo habilis has been achieved, the creation of OTU on the basis of shared anatomy would have introduced circularity into our analysis. The results of these analyses show that: (a) two species could be defined: habilis and rudolfensis; (b) the specimens belonging to these two taxa are included in the clade of Homo ; (c) the conclusions concerning the revision of the genus Homo and the inclusion of the specimens of habilis and rudolfensis to the genus Australopithecus or Kenyanthropus are questioned.

MOLECULAR APPROACH OF THE PHYLOGENY OF HOMINOIDEA : THE PSEUDO ETA-GLOBIN EXAMPLE Summary. — Nucleotide sequences from the pseudo eta-globin gene of Pan troglodytes (common chimpanzee), Gorilla gorilla (gorilla), Pongo pygmaeus (orangutan), Macaca mulatto (rhesus macaque) and Ateles geoffroyi (spider monkey) was compared to the same orthologous region of Homo sapiens (modern human). The Quaternary, which is sometimes also termed the Anthropogene Period, often is linked to the beginning of humankind. But what exactly is the basis in the fossil hominin record for this link, in particular what is the early Homo evidence? Since 1999, debate concerning the definition of the genus Homo and the identification of its first members has intensified. At the centre of recent debates, there are four hypotheses: (1) all early Homo specimens belong to the same species: Homo habilis sensu lato; (2) the early Homo hypodigm is heterogeneous, two species could be defined: Homo habilis sensu stricto and Homo rudolfensis; (3) these species do not belong to the genus Homo but to the genus Australopithecus; or (4) it would be more appropriate to put the specimens of Homo rudolfensis into the genus Kenyanthropus. The earliest appearance of the genus Homo will differ depending upon the favoured hypothesis: 2.45 Myr (hypotheses 1 and 2); 1.9 Myr (hypothesis 3); 1.9 or 2.4 Myr (hypothesis 4, depending on the genus attribution for habilis (2.4 Myr if Homo; 1.9 Myr if Australopithecus)). Our study, based on palaeoanthropological data, is focused on the 2.6-1.6 Myr period. In this paper, we propose to review and assess knowledge of early Homo taxonomy in the context of the definition of the Quaternary boundary. Le Quaternaire est souvent considéré comme une période liée à l’apparition du genre Homo et marquée par la diversité de ses représentants, ce qui lui valu parfois d’être défini comme une période « Anthropozoïque ». Mais que nous indique vraiment le registre des homininés fossiles et en particulier des premiers représentants du genre Homo? La définition du genre Homo et l’identification de ces premiers représentants sont l’objet de nombreux débats depuis 1999. Quatre hypothèses sont actuellement débattues : (1) tous les spécimens appartiennent à un seul et même taxon : Homo habilis ; (2) deux espèces peuvent être identifiées dans ce groupe : Homo habilis sensu stricto et Homo rudolfensis ; (3) ces spécimens n’appartiennent pas au genre Homo mais au genre Australopithecus ; (4) les spécimens de l’espèce rudolfensis devraient être mis dans le genre Kenyanthropus. L’émergence du genre Homo serait à 2,45 millions d’années (hypothèses 1 et 2) ; à 1,9 million d’années (hypothèse 3) ; à 1, 9 ou 2,4 millions d’années (hypothèse 4, selon l’attribution de l’espèce habilis, au genre Homo (2,4 Ma), ou au genre Australopithecus (1,9 Ma)). Nous exposons dans ce papier les problématiques actuelles et nos propres résultats (analyse cladistique) concernant l’émergence du genre Homo en Afrique, en les mettant en perspectives avec les différentes propositions concernant la limite du Quaternaire. Notre propos, basé sur les données paléoanthropologiques, est centré sur la période allant de 2,6 à 1,6 millions d’années.

The origin of late Neogene Hippopotamidae (Artiodactyla) involves one of the most serious conflicts between comparative anatomy and molecular biology: is Artiodactyla paraphyletic? Molecular comparisons indicate that Cetacea should be the modern sister group of hippos. This finding implies the existence of a fossil lineage linking cetaceans (first known in the early Eocene) to hippos (first known in the middle Miocene). The relationships of hippos within Artiodactyla are challenging, and the immediate affinities of Hippopotamidae have been studied by biologists for almost two centuries without resolution. Here, we compare opposing hypotheses implicating several “suiform” families. This morphological analysis of a comprehensive set of taxa and characters offers a robust solution to the origins of Hippopotamidae. This family appears to be deeply nested within the otherwise extinct artiodactyl family Anthracotheriidae, most precisely within the most advanced selenodont forms. The proposed sister group of hippos is the middle to late Miocene African semiaquaticLibycosaurus. Any close relationships of hippos with suoids, particularly with Tayassuidae, are rejected. Furthermore, the clade (Hippopotamidae, Anthracotheriidae) is proposed as the sister group of the Cetacea, offering broad morphological support for a molecular phylogeny, such support being also consistent with the fossil record. Corroboration of this relationship requires an exploration of anthracothere affinities with other Paleogene artiodactyls. Among those, the position of Ruminantia is a central question, still to be solved. Further progress in this debate is likely to come from morphological studies of paleontological data, whether known or still to be discovered.

The evolution of the avian palate has been a subject of great interest for over a century. Recently the primitive - derived sequences (i.e., character polarities) of the relevant features have become confused. Outgroup comparisons with theropod dinosaurs, crocodiles and other archosaurian reptiles suggest a number of palatal features that may be ancestral for birds. Ratites and tinamous exhibit a large number of these primitive features. Having polarized various palatal characters, we tested these polarities by examining the palates of Mesozoic birds. Archaeopteryx, Gobipteryx, and the hesperornithids were analysed. Although Archaeopteryx is too poorly known to reconstruct the palate, it shows a number of primitive features ; the identification of one of the bones as an ectopterygoid is questioned. Gobipteryx also exhibits many plesiomorphies and retains the elongate pterygoids of non-avian archosaurs. The palate of hesperornithid birds is reconstructed and shown to be widely divergent morphologically from other archosaurs ; it retains a few primitive features while showing several clear autapomorphies., Depuis plus d'un siècle l'évolution du palais avien a été un problème d'un grand intérêt. Récemment les séquences «primitif-dérivé», c'est-à-dire la polarisation des caractères pour les caractères pertinents, sont devenues confuses. Les comparaisons extra-groupes (outgroup comparisons) avec certains dinosaures théropodes, les crocodiles et d'autres reptiles archosauriens suggèrent un certain nombre de caractères palatins pouvant être ancestraux pour les oiseaux. Les Ratites et les Tinamous possèdent plusieurs de ces caractères primitifs. Ayant établi la polarité de plusieurs caractères palatins, nous avons testé ces polarités en examinant le palais d'oiseaux mésozoïques. Les conditions retrouvées chez Archaeopteryx, Gobipteryx et les Hesperornithiformes ont été analysées. Bien que le palais d'Archaeopteryx soit trop peu connu pour permettre sa reconstitution, il possède toutefois un certain nombre de caractères primitifs ; l'identification d'un des os comme étant un ectoptérygoïde est remise en question. Gobipteryx présente aussi plusieurs plésiomorphies et conserve les ptérygoïdes allongés retrouvés chez les Archosaures non-aviens. Le palais des Hesperornithiformes est reconstruit et montre une grande divergence morphologique par rapport à celui d'autres Archosaures ; il conserve quelques caractères primitifs mais présente en même temps plusieurs autapomorphies distinctes., Witmer Lawrence M., Martin Larry D. Une méthode non-aqueuse améliorée pour la préparation d'ADN chloroplastique (ADNcp) à partir de matériel foliaire séché de plantes adultes a permis une analyse des PLFR de l'ADNcp du riz à l'aide de 10 endonucléases de restriction. 320 plantes, représentant 248 variétés et 15 espèces de la Section #Eu-Oryza$ du genre #Oryza$, furent analysées. Un phylogramme hypothétique complet de 32 types de plastomes, dont 10 parmi les riz cultivés, fut déduit d'une analyse cladistique de 112 mutations décelées, calibré à l'aide de données bibliographiques sur les taux de mutation de l'ADNcp chez les Graminées, et confronté à certains repères paléo-géographiques. Les résultats apportent des informations nouvelles, en bonne partie compatibles avec les données existantes au niveau des génomes nucléaires et leur interprétation évolutive. (Résumé d'auteur)
