1. PyLayers: An open source dynamic simulator for indoor propagation and localization

Abstract: International audience, — In this paper, we introduce PyLayers a new open source radio simulator built to tackle indoor localization problem. PyLayers has been designed to simulate complete dynamic scenarios including the realistic movement of persons inside a building, the transmission channel estimation for multiple radio access technologies and the position estimation relying on location-dependent parameters originated from the simulated OSI physical layer. The channel is estimated by using a fast graph-based ray tracing method. From these simulated data, location dependent parameters, such as received power or time of arrival, can be deduced. The realistic movement of persons into the building layout is modeled with a virtual forces approach. The simulated data can be directly used with one of the built-in localization algorithms or be exported to various standards extensions. Finally, the accuracies of both the channel estimation and the localization are compared to measurements and show a good match.

2. Enhancing positioning accuracy through direct position estimators based on hybrid RSS data fusion

Abstract: International audience, In this paper, localization based on Received Signal Strength (RSS) is investigated assuming a path loss log normal shadowing model. On the one hand, indirect RSS-based estimation schemes are investigated; these schemes are based on two steps of estimation: estimation of ranges from RSS and then estimation of position using weighted least square approximation. We show that the performances of this type of schemes depend on the used estimator in the first step.We suggest that typical median estimator must be replaced by maximum likelihood estimator (mode) to enhance the positioning accuracy. On the other hand, a new direct RSS-based estimation scheme of position is proposed; Monte Carlo simulations show that the new estimator performs better than indirect estimators and can be reliable in future hybrid localization systems.

Abstract: International audience; As one of the most important forms of psychological behaviors, micro-expression can reveal the real emotion. However, the existing labeled training samples are limited to train a high performance model. To overcome this limit, in this paper we propose a macro-to-micro transformation model which enables to transfer macro-expression learning to micro-expression. Doing so improves the efficiency of the micro-expression features. For this purpose, LBP and LBP-TOP are used to extract macro-expression features and micro-expression features, respectively. Furthermore, feature selection is employed to reduce redundant features. Finally, singular value decomposition is employed to achieve macro-to-micro transformation model. The experimental evaluation based on the incorporated database including CK+ and CASME2 demonstrates that the proposed model achieves a competitive performance compared with the existing micro-expression recognition methods.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, an embedded double reference transmission line theory (EDRTLT) is presented. This approach is based upon taking an arbitrary wire among the í µí² wires constituting the harness and considering it as an internal reference conductor. Then the initial transmission line of í µí² wires above a ground reference is split into two coupled subsets of wires. The internal subset is composed of í µí² − í µí¿ wires with the internal reference wire as the return wire. The per unit length (p.u.l.) parameters of this internal transmission line are calculated with respect to this internal reference wire. They do not depend on the ground reference. The external subset is composed of only the internal reference wire with the ground plane as a reference. As a result, any change of relative position of the bundle and the ground reference involves the p.u.l. calculation of a mono-conductor transmission line. This double reference transmission line theory is shown to be equivalent to the classical single reference approach and the corresponding p.u.l. parameters are approximately retrieved from those of the single reference transmission lines to form the EDRTLT. The results obtained by this theory are in good agreement with those obtained from the single reference case where all p.u.l. parameters are directly calculated using the ground plane as a single reference. The main advantage provided by the EDRTLT is to reduce the complexity of analysis of the bundle-to-ground interaction.

Abstract: This paper presents a novel model for video salient object detection called spatiotemporal constrained optimization model (SCOM), which exploits spatial and temporal cues, as well as a local constraint, to achieve a global saliency optimization. For a robust motion estimation of salient objects, we propose a novel approach to modeling the motion cues from optical flow field, the saliency map of the prior video frame and the motion history of change detection, which is able to distinguish the moving salient objects from diverse changing background regions. Furthermore, an effective objectness measure is proposed with intuitive geometrical interpretation to extract some reliable object and background regions, which provided as the basis to define the foreground potential, background potential, and the constraint to support saliency propagation. These potentials and the constraint are formulated into the proposed SCOM framework to generate an optimal saliency map for each frame in a video. The proposed model is extensively evaluated on the widely used challenging benchmark data sets. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed SCOM substantially outperforms the state-of-the-art saliency models.

Abstract: International audience; Millimeter-Wave (mmWave) systems offer extremely large Band-Width (BW) and highly Line-of-Sight (LOS) dominant channels. Many beamforming and power allocation techniques have recently emerged to leverage such channel characteristics in order to enhance the sum capacity and the coverage for multi-user transmissions. However, most of the existing algorithms are practically limited due to full channel knowledge and high complexity requirements. In this paper we introduce a novel, low complexity, angular based beamforming and power allocation framework, that requires the knowledge of the main contributive Directions of Arrival/Departure (DoAs/DoDs) of the propagation channel only. Exploiting the fact that propagation conditions are highly driven by the geometrical structure of the channel in mmWave scenarios, our method relies on the estimation of the leakage caused by each User Equipment (UE) on all the other UEs, approximated from the DoAs contributions. We prove with the simulation results that this approach, in addition to be practically plausible, can enhance the network Spectral Efficiency (SE) alongside with maintaining acceptable data rates for the cell edge UEs.

Abstract: International audience; Inexact operators are developed to exploit the tolerance of an application to imprecisions. These operators aim at reducing system energy consumption and memory footprint. In order to integrate the appropriate inexact operators in a complex system, the Quality of Service of the approximate system must be thoroughly studied through simulation. However, when simulating on a PC or workstation , the custom bit-level structures of inexact operators are not implemented in the instruction set of the simulating architecture. Consequently, the simulation requires a costly emulation, leading to expensive bit-level simulations. This paper proposes a new "Fast and Fuzzy" functional simulation method for inexact operators whose probabilistic behavior is correlated with the Most Significant Bits of the input operands. The proposed method processes real signal data and simplifies the error model for inexact operators, accelerating the simulation of the system. The modelization accuracy of the error can be controlled by a parameter called fuzzyness degree F. Using the proposed method, the bit-accurate logic-level simulation of inexact operators is replaced by an exact operator to which a pseudo-random error variable is added. Experiments on 16-bit operators show that the proposed simulation method, when compared to a bit-accurate logic level simulation, is up to 44 times faster.

Abstract: International audience; —Approximate operators have been developed to overcome the performance limitations of the original accurate arithmetic operators. They trade off the output quality of the operator and its energy consumption, area or delay. To benefit from this trade-off, the logic structure of the original accurate operator is modified. When integrating approximate operators in a complex system, numerous simulations of the application are required to ensure the fulfillment of the application requirements, despite the induced approximations. Because the hardware implementation of approximate operators is not always available in early phases of application prototyping, long software simulation of their complex bit-level structure has to be used. This paper proposes a fast simulator for approximate operators built from the output values of the original accurate operator. The error due to the approximation is modeled by a stochastic process whose features are learned from the errors of the approximate operator. The proposed simulator is compared to the bit-accurate logic-level simulation and to a simulator of approximate operators built on the input values of the operator. Experiments on 10-bit operators show that the proposed method is up to 63× faster than a bit-accurate logic level simulation.

Abstract: An amplitude-comparison monopulse slotted waveguide antenna array with a pillbox parabolic quasi-optical beamforming network is proposed in substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology in the 24 GHz band. The beamformer is illuminated by a cluster of horn pairs located in the focal plane of the pillbox reflector. Each horn pair is composed of two H-plane sectorial horns connected to a coupler. In-phase and out-of-phase operations of each horn pair allow radiation of the $\Sigma $ and $\Delta $ beams along the antenna scanning plane (E-plane). At the design frequency of 24.15 GHz, the experimental results demonstrate an antenna field of view of ± 26°, with null depth better than −20 dB for all the measured $\Delta $ beams. The antenna gain varies between 21.6 and 20.5 dBi for the $\Sigma $ beams and the measured input reflection bandwidth is about 2.4% for VSWR < 2.

Abstract: Bessel-beam launchers are promising and established technologies for focusing applications at microwaves. Their use in time-domain leads to the definition of a new class of devices, namely, the X-wave launchers. In this work, we discuss the focusing features of such devices with a specific interest at millimeter waves. The spatial resolutions of such systems are described under a rigorous mathematical framework to derive novel operating conditions for designing X-wave launchers. These criteria might be particularly appealing for specific millimeter-wave applications. In particular, it is shown that an electrically large aperture is not strictly required, as it seemed from previous works. However, the use of an electrically small aperture would demand a considerably wideband capability. The various discussions presented here provide useful information for the design of X-wave launchers. This aspect is finally shown with reference to the practical design of two different X-wave launchers.

Abstract: International audience; Multi-player Multi-Armed Bandits (MAB) have been extensively studied in the literature, motivated by applications to Cognitive Radio systems. Driven by such applications as well, we motivate the introduction of several levels of feedback for multi-player MAB algorithms. Most existing work assume that sensing information is available to the algorithm. Under this assumption, we improve the state-of-the-art lower bound for the regret of any decentralized algorithms and introduce two algorithms, RandTopM and MCTopM, that are shown to empirically outperform existing algorithms. Moreover, we provide strong theoretical guarantees for these algorithms, including a notion of asymptotic optimality in terms of the number of selections of bad arms. We then introduce a promising heuristic, called Selfish, that can operate without sensing information, which is crucial for emerging applications to Internet of Things networks. We investigate the empirical performance of this algorithm and provide some first theoretical elements for the understanding of its behavior.; Les bandits multi-joueurs multiarmes (MAB) ont fait l'objet d'études approfondies dans la littérature, motivés par des applications aux systèmes de radio intelligente. De telles applications motivent l'introduction de plusieurs niveaux d'informations pour les algorithmes MAB multi-joueurs. La plupart des travaux récents supposent que l'algorithme dispose d'informations de détection (sensing). Dans cette hypothèse, nous améliorons la meilleure borne inférieure connue pour le regret de tout algorithme décentralisé, et introduisons deux algorithmes, RandTopM et MCTopM, qui sont empiriquement meilleurs par rapport aux algorithmes existants. Abstract: International audience; We demonstrate a new operation mode of thermal gas sensor based on thermal capacity extraction with identification algorithm. The system is a silicon microstructure covered with zeolites operated at constant temperature while stimulated by heat pseudo-random sequence. The proposed detection principle is demonstrated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure through the detection of gas water molecules with an hydrophilic FAU-type zeolite coating. The identification algorithm is a continuous-time closed-loop identification algorithm based on the instrumental variable principle.

Abstract: International audience; Lichen-gastropod interactions generally focus on the potential deterrent or toxic role of secondary metabolites. To better understand lichen-gastropod interactions, a controlled feeding experiment was designed to identify the parts of the lichen Argopsis friesiana consumed by the Subantarctic land snail Notodiscus hookeri. Besides profiling secondary metabolites in various lichen parts (apothecia, cephalodia, phyllocladia and fungal axis of the pseudopodetium), we investigated potentially beneficial resources that snails can utilize from the lichen (carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, polysaccharides and total nitrogen). Notodiscus hookeri preferred cephalodia and algal layers, which had high contents of carbohydrates, nitrogen, or both. Apothecia were avoided, perhaps due to their low contents of sugars and polyols. Although pseudopodetia were characterized by high content of arabitol, they were also rich in medullary secondary compounds, which may explain why they were not consumed. Thus, the balance between nutrients (particularly nitrogen and polyols) and secondary metabolites appears to play a key role in the feeding preferences of this snail.

Abstract: The design of cheaper and more compact electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) filters can be achieved by exploiting the magnetic coupling between components. This requires the knowledge of coupling coefficients between components and, consequently, of their equivalent coupling surface. The aim of this paper is to present how this coupling surface can be determined using a transverse electromagnetic mode cell. This methodology is described and applied to two different cases: a capacitor and an inductor. In order to validate the determination and usage of equivalent coupling surfaces, a comparison between the calculation and measurement of mutual inductances is carried out on practical examples.

Abstract: An online reinforcement learning algorithm is anytime if it does not need to know in advance the horizon T of the experiment. A well-known technique to obtain an anytime algorithm from any non-anytime algorithm is the "Doubling Trick". In the context of adversarial or stochastic multi-armed bandits, the performance of an algorithm is measured by its regret, and we study two families of sequences of growing horizons (geometric and exponential) to generalize previously known results that certain doubling tricks can be used to conserve certain regret bounds. In a broad setting, we prove that a geometric doubling trick can be used to conserve (minimax) bounds in $R_T = O(\sqrt{T})$ but cannot conserve (distribution-dependent) bounds in $R_T = O(\log T)$. We give insights as to why exponential doubling tricks may be better, as they conserve bounds in $R_T = O(\log T)$, and are close to conserving bounds in $R_T = O(\sqrt{T})$.; Un algorithme en ligne d'apprentissage par renforcement est dit "à tout moment" (anytime) s'il n'a pas besoin de connaître à l'avance l'horizon T de l'expérience. Une technique bien connue pour obtenir un algorithme à tout moment à partir d'un algorithme qui ne l'est pas est "l'astuce de doublement" (Doubling Trick). Dans le contexte des bandits multi-bras adverses ou stochastiques, la performance d'un algorithme est mesurée par son regret, et nous étudions deux familles de séquences d'horizons croissants (géométrique et exponentielle), pour généraliser des résultats précédemment connus que certaines astuces de doublement peuvent être utilisées pour conserver certaines limites de regret. Dans un cadre très générique, nous prouvons qu'une astuce géométrique de doublement peut être utilisée pour conserver les bornes (minimax) en $R_T = O(\sqrt{T})$ mais ne peut pas conserver les bornes (dépendantes de la distribution) en $R_T = O(\log T)$. Nous donnons un aperçu des raisons pour lesquelles les astuces de doublage exponentiel peuvent être meilleures, car elles conservent les bornes en $R_T = O(\log T)$, et sont proches de conserver les bornes en $R_T = O(\sqrt{T}$).

Abstract: International audience; In this article, we analyze the issues of power control and Cell Discontinuous Transmission (Cell DTx) in a small-cell network. More precisely, we evaluate the performance of a policy, thanks to which each base station minimizes its own energy consumption. We have recently proposed this policy in a mono-cell scenario and we extend the scope of our previous work in this article, as we propose to use this policy in a multi-cell network. For that purpose, we first consider a network made of two base stations, in which we can compute the minimum network's energy consumption, which enables to provide users with the requested quality of service. If we compare the proposed policy with this minimum, we can demonstrate that the proposed policy has a good performance, which, however, can be improved by reducing the maximum transmit power of the base station. Then, we apply our algorithm in the case of a dense network, in which the proposed policy outperforms other policies and provides a 6% gain in energy, where compared to a policy featuring no power control. We show that the reduction of the maximum transmit power can increase this gain up to 11% of the network's energy consumption.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we propose a new adaptive modulation based on the wavelet packet transform, which targets a good resistance against frequency selective channels while avoiding a large PAPR. Classical multi-carrier modulation schemes divide the channel bandwidth into narrowband sub-channels to improve its robustness against frequency selective fading. However, they suffer from the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem which occurs due to a random constructive addition of sub-carriers. By contrast, single carrier modulation schemes, where each transmitted symbol fully occupies the bandwidth, are more sensitive to frequency selective environments and less affected by the PAPR problem. In this work, we show how the bandwidth division can be reconfigurable and adapted to the channel properties, and we provide several examples to prove that the proposed adaptive modulation represents an alternative modulation which is adjustable between two extreme cases: single carrier modulation and classical multi-carrier modulation.

Abstract: International audience; —Following the increasing growth in the demand on mobile TV, hybrid broadcast/broadband networks emerged as a suitable approach to overtake the challenges introduced by each network separately in order to enhance users' experience. This paper presents two possible scenarios for a hybrid, spatially separated, broadcast/broadband network to offer mobile TV linear services for the end users. Namely, the first scenario is based on shared spectrum access for both networks while the second one proposes a dedicated spectrum. Using a stochastic geometry approach, the paper derives analytical formulations for both the probability of coverage and ergodic capacity. These formulations are then used to optimize the hybrid network in terms of its key design parameters including the Broadcast (BC) coverage radii, the Broadband (BB) Base Stations' (BS) density, and user satisfaction given in terms of spectral capacity. The results have shown that an optimal BC radius maximizing the probability of coverage and capacity exists and it depends on the BS density of the BB network. Other design parameters have been provided and analyzed leading to an optimal network deployment. To the best of the author's knowledge, this paper presents a first reference work dealing with the optimization of the hybrid network with the coexistence of broadband and broadcast networks, from stochastic geometry perspective, taking into account the inter-cell interference.

Abstract: In this work, we present for the first time the concept of chalcogenide glass-ceramic for photovoltaic applications with the GeSe2–Sb2Se3–CuI system. It has been demonstrated that thin films, deposited with the sputtering technique, are amorphous and can be crystallized with appropriate heat treatment. The thin film glass-ceramic behaves as a p-type semiconductor, even if it contains p-type Cu2GeSe3and n-type Sb2Se3. The conductivity of Sb2Se3has been greatly improved by appropriate iodine doping. The first photovoltaic solar cells based on the association of iodine-doped Sb2Se3and the glass-ceramic thin films give a short-circuit current density JSCof 10 mA/cm2and an open-circuit voltage VOCof 255 mV, with a power conversion efficiency of about 0.9%.

Abstract: International audience; Receive Antenna Shift Keying (RASK) is a Spatial Modulation (SM) transmission scheme that has recently been under study because of its low detection complexity and its ability to increase the spectral efficiency when combined with classical IQ modulation schemes. The idea is that the transmitter uses a focusing technique to target one of the receive antennas. The transmitted information is coded depending on the index of the receive antenna that have been targeted. Note that in this case, the sent signal does not contain any information, that's why RASK can be combined with any classical IQ modulation. Different focusing techniques could be used to target a receive antenna. In this study, the Time Reversal preprocessing technique is used at the transmitter side. In this paper, theoretical performance of the Bit Error Rate and of the focusing gain are established for the RASK scheme in a MIMO Line-of-Sight configuration with two receive antennas. Also, a testbed is evaluated and used to provide RASK performance in realistic conditions.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, useful criteria for dimensioning X-wave launchers are provided based on the definition of an original metric of confinement. The mathematical expressions for evaluating the nondiffractive features of a spectrally-flat X-wave are first reviewed. Then, a novel criterion for dimensioning the aperture size of an X-wave launcher is proposed to obtain a pulse which is confined over both the transverse and the propagating axes. Such an analysis may be particularly useful for the development of X-wave launchers especially in the microwave/millimeter-wave range, where the available fractional bandwidths are subjected to severe technological constraints.

Abstract: International audience; This study deals with the dielectric properties of recycled glass foams and their use as microwave absorbers. Glass wastes from Cathode Ray Tube have been used to produce foams by heating a mixture consisting of glass cullet and foaming agents (carbon or a combination of carbon, TiO2, MnO2 and AlN). As only part of the carbon introduced into the initial load oxidizes and contributes to the foaming process, the residual fraction acts as an electromagnetic absorber. The effect of the carbon load rate on the foams density and microwave properties was studied. These materials present a low permittivity and high dielectric losses in X-band. Foams density mainly controls the dielectric properties. Carbon-based glass foams show a great potential as microwave absorbers with a shielding effectiveness of 20 dB/cm at 12 GHz. Moreover, a tradeoff between the density and shielding efficiency can be achieved by controlling the load rate of carbon.

Abstract: Computer security is something that brings to mind the greatest developers and companies who wish to protect their data. Major steps forward are being taken via advances made in the security of technology. The main purpose of this paper is to provide a view of different mechanisms and algorithms used to ensure big data security and to theoretically put forward an improvement in the health-based environment using a proposed model as reference. A search was conducted for information from scientific databases as Google Scholar, IEEE Xplore, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Scopus to find information related to security in big data. The search criteria used were “big data”, “health”, “cloud”, and “security”, with dates being confined to the period from 2008 to the present time. After analyzing the different solutions, two security alternatives are proposed combining different techniques analyzed in the state of the art, with a view to providing existing information on the big data over cloud with maximum security in different hospitals located in the province of Valladolid, Spain. New mechanisms and algorithms help to create a more secure environment, although it is necessary to continue developing new and better ones to make things increasingly difficult for cybercriminals.

Abstract: International audience; The evaluation of the energy consumption of a radiocommunication requires to analyse the life cycle of the elements used. However, this analysis does not specify the energetic limits. Theoretical approaches allow one to draw these limits, which are known in multiple cases of information transmission. However, the answers are not always satisfactory, in particular in the case of time-varying channels. After a brief presentation of the notion of energetic limits of a radiocommunication, and beginning with a global approach, we show that, contrary to the published results, the energetic limits always differ from zero if the physical constraints are correctly expressed.

Abstract: In this paper we first show that Robin Smith’s ecthetic system $\mathit{SE}$ for Aristotle’s assertoric syllogistic is not complete, despite what is claimed by Smith. $\mathit{SE}$ is then not adequate to establish that ecthesis allows one to dispense with indirect or per impossibile deductions in Aristotle’s assertoric logic. As an alternative to $\mathit{SE}$ , we then present a stronger system $\mathit{EC}$ which is adequate for this purpose. $\mathit{EC}$ is a nonexplosive ecthetic system which is shown to be sound and complete with respect to all valid syllogistic arguments with a consistent set of premises.

Abstract: International audience; The high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) remains a major drawback of multicarrier modulations. Hence, the nonlinear characteristics of power amplifiers (PA) results in strong distortion and low power efficiency when multicarrier modulations are used. In this paper, the impact of the nonlinearities on the amplified multicarrier signal is analyzed, considering both PAPR limitation using clipping and PA linearization. Therefore, we derive the expression of the error vector magnitude (EVM) of the amplified signal with and without the use of polynomial predistortion and/or clipping techniques. We provide analytical EVM expressions that depend on the PA and predistortion characteristics, as well as the PAPR and the average power of both input and clipped signals. These expressions are general formulas which allow to measure in-band distortion at the PA output. The simulation results show that the proposed expressions present perfect accuracy. Moreover, the trade-off between the PA linearity and efficiency is investigated considering the performance of the clipping and predistortion techniques. An analytical expression which gives the optimal input back-off (IBO) maximizing the PA efficiency with respect to any EVM constraint is provided. Finally, the predistortion complexity is discussed aiming at reducing it with respect to an EVM constraint.

Abstract: International audience; Recent advances in information theory have provided achievability bounds and converses for the coding rate for the finite blocklength regime. In this paper, recent results on the non-asymptotic coding rate for fading channels with no channel state information at the transmitter are exploited to analyze the goodput in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and the energy-efficiency spectral-efficiency (EE-SE) tradeoff where the fundamental relationship between the codeword length and the EE is given. Finally, the true outage probability in Ricean and Nakagami-$m$ block fading channels is investigated and it is proved that the asymptotic outage capacity is the Laplace approximation of the average error probability in finite blocklength regime.

Abstract: In this work, the opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) problem is addressed with stationary and non-stationary Markov multi-armed bandit (MAB) frameworks. We propose a novel index based algorithm named QoS-UCB that balances exploration in terms of occupancy and quality, e.g. signal to noise ratio (SNR) for transmission, for stationary environments. Furthermore, we propose another learning policy, named discounted QoS-UCB (DQoS-UCB), for the non-stationary case. Our contribution in terms of numerical analysis is twofold: i) In stationary OSA scenario, we numerically compare our QoS-UCB policy with an existing UCB1 and also show that QoS-UCB outperforms UCB1 in terms of regret and ii) in non-stationary OSA scenario, numerical results state that proposed DQoS-UCB policy outperforms other simple UCBs and also QoS-UCB policy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first learning algorithm which adapts to non-stationary Markov MAB framework and also quantifies channel quality information.

Abstract: International audience; This paper investigates the optimization of the coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmitted signal in a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) context. We propose to design OFDM signals to achieve range ambiguity mitigation. Indeed, range ambiguities are well known to be a limitation for SAR systems which operates with pulsed transmitted signal. The ambiguous reflected signal corresponding to one pulse is then detected when the radar has already transmitted the next pulse. In this paper, we demonstrate that the range ambiguity mitigation is possible by using orthogonal transmitted wave as OFDM pulses. The coded OFDM signal is optimized through genetic optimization procedures based on radar image quality parameters. Moreover, we propose to design a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration to enhance the noise robustness of a radar system and this configuration is mainly efficient in the case of using orthogonal waves as OFDM pulses. The results we obtain show that OFDM signals outperform conventional radar chirps for range ambiguity suppression and for robustness enhancement in 2×2 MIMO configuration.

Abstract: International audience; In modern electronic products, the printed circuit board (PCB) traces may well form the dominant coupling path in radiated immunity problems. Therefore, an understanding of the designable parameters that influence the worst-case induced voltages can be of use to the PCB designer, together with rapid simulations. Therefore, a modified single (unmeshed) Taylor cell is combined with transmission line theory to predict the terminal voltages induced by a grazing, vertically polarized plane wave, incident on a multi-segment trace with arbitrary terminal impedances. The resulting model is closed-form and therefore suitable for rapid simulations. Furthermore, the model is geometrically approximated to provide understanding on how designable PCB parameters determine the worst-case induced voltage. Finally, the model is compared to measurement results.

Abstract: We present a Bessel-beam launcher based on a leaky radial waveguide consisting of a capacitive sheet over a ground plane that supports higher-order leaky modes. A propagating Bessel beam is generated above the radiating waveguide. The Bessel beam is transverse-magnetic (TM) polarized with a vertical component of electric field that is a zeroth-order Bessel function of the first kind. A higher-order leaky-wave mode is used to reduce losses at millimeter waves and, at the same time, avoid the thin dielectric layers used in previously proposed lower order leaky-wave Bessel launchers. Closed-form design equations are provided for the proposed structure. In addition, the operating bandwidth of the launcher is defined using dispersion analysis. Near-field measurements of a prototype operating in the frequency range 38–39.5 GHz validate the concept. The measured launcher generates a Bessel beam with a stable spot size of about 4.3 mm ( $0.57\,\lambda$ ) over a nondiffractive range of about 16.4 mm ( $2.2\,\lambda$ ), within about a 4% fractional bandwidth.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a robust nonlinear model predictive control strategy to consider the control of systems described by nonlinear ordinary differential equation in a sampled-data framework. The optimal couple controldisturbances is calculated as a time continuous function at each sampling instant by solving a saddle point problem. Using this controller, it is proved that the system is ultimately bounded and satisfies an exponential stability property at each sampling instants. To validate the efficiency of our approach, the presented methodology is illustrated on a cart, spring and damper example.

Abstract: International audience; This paper provides a theoretical analysis of the performance of an hybrid network composed of a broadband system and a broadcast system which cooperate to deliver linear services on portable and mobile devices. First, we propose a global system model for the hybrid network in which the coverage area of the broadcast system is adjusted with respect to the spatial distribution of the users. Then based on the number of users requesting the services, the model parameters are optimized to increase the capacity of the hybrid network while guaranteeing a given quality of service. By applying convex optimization techniques, we derive a closed-form expression of the optimal coverage radius of the broadcast system that maximizes the capacity of the hybrid network. Next, based on this theoretical model, we analyze the performances of the optimized hybrid network. The results show that, depending on the number of users requesting the service, significant improvements of the capacity and quality of service are achieved with the hybrid network. Finally, regarding the planning of a cooperative network, this paper can be used to determine the optimal planning parameters of the broadcasting system for the delivery of linear services.

Abstract: In this work, we report on the design, microfabrication and use of a ring disk ultramicroelectrodes array (RD-UMEs) for direct detection of nitric oxide (NO)-release from decomposition of S-Nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) catalyzed by copper species. The electrochemical device includes seven individually addressable sets of gold RD-UMEs pairs and four gold counter electrodes. For each pair of RD-UMEs, the gold ring is electrochemically modified by poly(eugenol)/poly(phenol) layers to act as NO-sensor while the gold disc electrode is electrochemically coated by a copper layer serving as Cu2+ source for the catalysis of the in situ decomposition of GSNO. The mediated decomposition of GSNO by Cu2+ is achieved in presence of ascorbate. NO released from GSNO is detected on NO ring electrode at the same potential applied to form the Cu2+-based catalyst (+0.8 V vs. Ag/AgCl) in phosphate buffer solution with or without serum. This device makes it possible to superimpose radio frequency noise to a functional baseband signal with controlled and repeatable transfer characteristics. The baseband path has a measured dc—380 $\mathrm{M}$ $\mathrm{Hz}$ bandwidth, while the radio frequency path (up to 1 $\mathrm{W}$ ) has a 150 $\mathrm{k}$ $\mathrm{Hz}$ $\text{-}$ 5 $\mathrm{G}$ $\mathrm{Hz}$ bandwidth. This multiplexer can be used for electromagnetic conducted immunity testing of digital and mixed-signal devices.

Abstract: In this paper we propose a methodology to accelerate the resolution of the so-called "Sorted L-One Penalized Estimation" (SLOPE) problem. Our method leverages the concept of "safe screening", well-studied in the literature for \textit{group-separable} sparsity-inducing norms, and aims at identifying the zeros in the solution of SLOPE. More specifically, we derive a set of $\tfrac{n(n+1)}{2}$ inequalities for each element of the $n$-dimensional primal vector and prove that the latter can be safely screened if some subsets of these inequalities are verified. We propose moreover an efficient algorithm to jointly apply the proposed procedure to all the primal variables. Our procedure has a complexity $\mathcal{O}(n\log n + LT)$ where $T\leq n$ is a problem-dependent constant and $L$ is the number of zeros identified by the tests. Numerical experiments confirm that, for a prescribed computational budget, the proposed methodology leads to significant improvements of the solving precision., 26 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: Elimination of alien crosstalk in coordinated digital subscriber line systems is investigated in this study. In the upstream, the process of crosstalk elimination may take advantage of available coordination at the receiver side. As the signal received at the coordinated terminals can be corrupted by alien crosstalk, the reception process involves passing the signals received at the coordinated terminals through a spatial whitening operation. As part of the contribution in this study, a method is proposed to obtain the spatial whitening filter coefficients. These coefficients are estimated from the cyclic spectrum of alien crosstalk received at the coordinated system terminals, where transmission at the coordinated system is controlled to allow separating the cyclic spectra of both coordinated system and alien crosstalk signals. This study includes evaluation of the whitening receiver performance taking into account the effects of estimation errors. Theoretical derivations are illustrated by numerical results obtained for VDSL2 application.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we analyze the problem of deploying small cellular cells into a large broadcast cell in the framework of the convergence between the Long Term Evolution (LTE) and the Digital Broadcasting Video (DVB) technologies. In this work, a non-cooperative deployment of these technologies is considered in the sense that cellular and broadcast networks interfere on each other. In literature, there is no work dealing with the ergodic capacity of full cross-interfering links in a DVB-LTE convergence scenario. Our contribution lies in two folds: i) the global ergodic capacity is derived in closed-form with Rayleigh fading channel on each link. This derivation allows us to evaluate the global data rate of the DVB and LTE in a spectral overlap scenario. ii) The analytical forms allow the evaluation of the influence of system parameters on the global and broadcast data rate, e. g. mobile and broadcast power, distance between the broadcast receiver and the LTE base station.

Abstract: International audience; It is expected that, in the coming years, the video data traffic carried by mobile networks will increase drastically. Among the different ways of facing this "mobile data tsunami", the cooperation of several complementary access technologies offers promising prospects. In the context of such a cooperative approach, this paper proposes the definition of a unified broadcast layer, close to the 3GPP-LTE technology, and therefore liable to be easily integrated in mobile devices and infrastructure equipment. The general technical requirements for the design of such a common physical layer are detailed and a practical example based on the 3GPP/LTE-E-MBMS and DVB-T2 standards is described. The verification of the proposed approach is performed through simulation results and validation tests carried out on a hardware platform.

Abstract: As a typical dimensionality reduction technique, random projection has been widely applied in a variety of fields concerning categorization. The construction of random projection has also been deeply studied, based on the principle of preserving the pairwise distances of a set of data projected from a high-dimensional space onto a low-dimensional subspace. Considering random projection is mainly exploited for the task of classification, this paper is novelly developed to study random projection from the viewpoint of feature selection, rather than of the traditional distance preservation. This yields a somewhat surprising result, that is, theoretically the sparsest random matrix with only one nonzero element in each column, can present better feature selection performance than other more dense matrices. Extensive experiments on binary classification also confirm the theoretical conjecture. Apparently, this result will be very attractive for dimensionality reduction due to its breakthrough on both complexity reduction and performance improvement.

Abstract: International audience; Microcrystalline silicon films are used as piezoresistive material to fabricate resistor and transistor strain gauges. Very small gauges are fabricated allowing the possibility to measure high deformations with both high sensitivity and spatial resolution. Resistor gauges with 5 x 125 μm² smallest size showed a gauge factor of -24 when applying high strains (0.55%, radius of curvature 5 mm). Field effect thin film transistor (TFT) gauges showed a gauge factor of -85 but under slightly lower strains (0.45%, radius of curvature 10 mm). This value is close to strain gauges made of single crystalline silicon (~ 100, regarding the absolute value), but which are not flexible and then cannot support high deformations. The more complex technological process of TFT gauges could reserve their use to the measurement of low deformations when high resolution is required, while resistor gauges could be chosen when focusing on a mix between size and sensitivity in a large range of deformations.

Abstract: International audience; The relationship between concentration of sodium cations and the properties of faujasite (FAU) zeolite using a two-step synthesis procedure including (1) formation of amorphous aluminosilicate precursors and separation of amorphous nanoparticles, and (2) transformation of these amorphous particles into zeolite crystals by treatment with alkali solutions (NaOH) were studied. Three representative samples including two nano-sized zeolites and one micron-sized zeolite were prepared using different concentration of sodium hydroxide. The crystallization process of these zeolites was studied in details by FTIR, NMR, XRD, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption. The results indicated that minor changes in the concertation of inorganic cations can significantly shorten the induction period and crystallization time and thus affect the morphology, size and chemical composition of the zeolite crystals.

Abstract: International audience; A low-cost dual linearly-polarized transmitarray antenna (TA) is presented for 5G and beyond networks at D-band. This TA is made of 40 40 unit-cells (UCs) and is illuminated by a stepped feed horn with a F/D ratio equal to 0.75. The flat lens panel is based on UCs with six different phase states at the center frequency of 150 GHz (thus leading in average to a 2-bit phase quantization and 0.7-dB insertion loss from 130 to 175 GHz). Each UC is made of only three metal layers and does not include any via connection to guaranty performance robustness with respect to fabrication dispersions. The measured1-dB and 3-dB TA gain bandwidths equal 16.8% and 19.8%, respectively, with a peak gain of 32 dBi, corresponding to an aperture efficiency of 32% at 150 GHz. The measured sidelobe and cross-polarization levels in E and H planes remain below -21 and -37 dB, respectively. An excellent agreement between measured and simulated radiation patterns was observed.

Abstract: International audience; The 3D characterization of radiating structures is a frequently encountered, and yet challenging, procedure. The theoretical sampling criterion often leads to prohibitive measurement duration, especially for antennas embedded on electrically large structures. However, the position of the antenna under test strongly influences the sampling requirements. By appropriately positioning the antenna with respect to the measurement system, it is possible to promote the low spatial frequency part of its spherical harmonic spectrum. We present a post-processing optimization algorithm enabling a systematic and accurate determination of the antenna best position from a given measurement dataset with no prior knowledge. This sooptimized position is exploited to improve the characterization of the antenna radiation pattern without resorting to any additional measurement sample. The proposed algorithm is validated for both near-field simulations and far-field measurements on various radiating structures, including an antenna embedded on a satellite model.

Abstract: International audience; A novel spectral formulation is proposed here for the coupling integral between a cylindrical wave with arbitrary radial wavenumber and azimuthal dependence, and a slot placed on a plane orthogonal to the wavefront. Such a kind of integral is massively encountered in electromagnetic modeling of stratified structures comprising slots and vertical pins or vias. The twofold spatial integral defining the coupling is transformed into an equivalent onefold spectral integral, the integration path of which is selected to obtain Gaussian decay of the integrand. Both propagating and evanescent cylindrical modes are considered. An arbitrary stratification orthogonal to the slot plane can be considered, as well as an arbitrary current on the slot. Numerical comparisons against the standard spatial approach are shown to validate the new formulation, and its advantage in terms of computation cost is investigated in depth.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, a new differential space-time modulation (DSTM) scheme for 4×4 multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems is proposed. This scheme is used for MIMO systems where the channel coefficients are not available at both the transmitter and the receiver. The transmission matrices used in this scheme belong to the Weyl group. Simulation results show that this new scheme with four transmit antennas outperforms the well-known Tarokh's differential space-time block coding (DSTBC) scheme. The spectral efficiency of this scheme can be up to 3 bit/s/Hz.

Abstract: Manuscript submitted to IEEE Transaction on Information Theory, 2013.; Compressed sensing is a promising technique that attempts to faithfully recover sparse signal with as few linear and nonadaptive measurements as possible. Its performance is largely determined by the characteristic of sensing matrix. Recently several zero-one binary sensing matrices have been deterministically constructed for their relative low complexity and competitive performance. Considering the implementation complexity, it is of great practical interest if one could further improve the sparsity of binary matrix without performance loss. Based on the study of restricted isometry property (RIP), this paper proposes the near-optimal binary sensing matrix, which guarantees nearly the best performance with as sparse distribution as possible. The proposed near-optimal binary matrix can be deterministically constructed with progressive edge-growth (PEG) algorithm. Its performance is confirmed with extensive simulations.
