The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with W. Paul Thayer. The bulk of this interview focuses on Thayer's service as Deputy Secretary of Defense in 1983-84. In the early portion of the interview, Thayer discusses his opinion on the National Security Act of 1947 and its subsequent amendments. Thayer served as a fighter pilot in WWII in the Pacific and North Africa. He offers comments and opinions on the advantages and disadvantages of battleships and aircraft carriers. Thayer also opines about nuclear weapons and the strategies employed regarding them including the buildup of stockpiles, their control and use. The conversation then moves to his recommendation and confirmation as Deputy Secretary of Defense, working for Caspar Weinberger (Secretary of Defense in the Ronald Reagan administration). Thayer speaks about various budget and procurement issues he worked on while at the Pentagon. Particularly, Thayer was worried about equiping the US forces for a full scale war with the Russians when in all likelihood, the US would be facing rogue terrorist activity. Thayer also speaks about the arms race and its affect on the Soviet Union. Thayer concludes with what satisfied and dissatified him about his work for the Secretary of Defense in 1983-1984.

Wave rotors have been investigated as a technology for improving the performance of small turbofan engines in the 600 to 1000 lb. thrust class. This report summarizes the results of an eight-month study to analyze wave rotor performance for different configurations and to determine its sensitivity to operating and design parameters. Engine cycle calculations were also performed in order to estimate engine performance improvements and sensitivity to the wave rotor component. Wave rotor/turbines and pressure exchanger wave rotors both have been evaluated. In each case, experimental data exists which confirms predicted wave rotor performance over a wide range of operating conditions., See also Volume 2, AD-A131 168.

In a recent development program under Contract N62269-2759 for the Aviation Medical Acceleration Laboratory (AMAL), Naval Air Development Center, Johnsville, Pennsylvania, AAI conducted a thorough study of a fullbody, soft cushion couch as an effective means of protecting pilots and crew members from severe dynamic environments. A prototype couch was designed, fabricated and tested by AAI. Phase I of this program involved the study of various foams, design of a couch configuration, prediction of testing results, testing in shock, acceleration and vibration environments and a comparison of predicted results with actual results. Phase II of this program involved development of an articulated seat and leg support couch and, testing of the couch, only if the predictive method of phase I were not satisfactory. As an alternative to phase II testing, a data book has been prepared to show the validity of the predictive methods.
