Alignment of densely packed single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) largely preserves the extraordinary electronic properties of individual SWNTs in the alignment direction, while in transverse direction the films are very resistive due to large energy barriers for tunneling between adjacent SWNTs. We demonstrate that chromium atoms inserted between the sidewalls of parallel SWNTs effectively coordinate to the benzene rings of the nanotubes via hexahapto bonds that preserve the nanotube-conjugated electronic structure and serve as a conduit for electron transfer. The atomically interconnected aligned SWNTs exhibit enhanced transverse conductivity, which increases by ∼2100% as a result of the photoactivated organometallic functionalization with Cr. The hexahapto mode of bonding the graphitic surfaces of carbon nanotubes with transition metal atoms offers an attractive route to the reversible chemical engineering of the transport properties of aligned carbon nanotube thin films. We demonstrate that a device fabricated with aligned SWNTs can be reversibly switched between a state of high electrical conductivity (ON) by light and low electrical conductivity (OFF) by applied potential. This study provides a route to the design of novel nanomaterials for applications in electrical atomic switches, optoelectronic and spintronic devices.

In this work, we examine the process of the quantum transfer of energy considering time-dependent dipole-dipole interaction in a dimer system characterized by two-level atom systems. By taking into account the effect of the acceleration and speed of the atoms in the dimer coupling, we demonstrate that the improvement of the probability for a single-excitation transfer energy extremely benefits from the incorporation of atomic motion effectiveness and the energy detuning. We explore the relevance between the population and entanglement during the time-evolution and show that this kind of nonlocal correlation may be generated during the process of the transfer of energy. Our work may provide optimal conditions to implement realistic experimental scenario in the transfer of the quantum energy. CVD graphene has attracted a great deal of interest from both academia and industry. The strong motivation to commercialize high quality CVD graphene films and related devices has been restricted by the lack of a cheap, efficient, clean and reliable graphene transfer process. In this article, we report a novel graphene transfer technique which provides a route to high-throughput, reliable and economical transfer of graphene without introducing large cracks and residue contamination from polymers, such as PMMA or magnetic impurities. The transferred graphene was thoroughly characterized with Raman spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Fabricated large area graphene-based field effect transistors exhibited high mobilities, which were about 2 times higher than those for devices prepared with graphene transferred by the conventional wet transfer method. This new graphene transfer technique has the potential to expedite the large scale industrial utilization of CVD graphene in electronics, spintronics, catalysis and energy storage.

The unique properties of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) have made them interesting candidates for applications in biomedicine. There are diverse chemical groups that can be attached to SWCNTs in order for these tiny tubes to gain various functionalities, for example, water solubility. Due to the availability of these &ldquo, functionalization&rdquo, approaches, SWCNTs are seen as agents for a potential anti-cancer therapy. In this context, we tested different chemically-functionalized forms of SWCNTs to determine which modifications make them better combatants against glioblastoma (astrocytoma grade IV), the deadliest brain cancer. We investigated the effects that two types of water soluble SWCNTs, functionalized with polyethylene glycol (SWCNT-PEG) or tetrahydrofurfuryl-terminated polyethylene glycol (SWCNT-PEG-THFF), have on the morphology and vitality, that is, cell adhesion, proliferation and death rate, of the D54MG human glioblastoma cells in culture. We found that SWCNT-PEG-THFF solute, when added to culture media, makes D54MG cells less round (measured as a significant decrease, by ~23%, in the form factor). This morphological change was induced by the PEG-THFF functional group, but not the SWCNT backbone itself. We also found that SWCNT-PEG-THFF solute reduces the proliferation rate of D54MG cells while increasing the rate of cell death. The functional groups PEG and PEG-THFF, on the other hand, reduce the cell death rate of D54MG human glioma cells. These data indicate that the process of functionalization of SWCNTs for potential use as glioma therapeutics may affect their biological effects.

We report the synthesis of vulcanized polyisoprene (SPIP) nanowires and an investigation of the electrochemical lithiation mechanism of the covalently bonded sulfur bridges in SPIP. Electrochemical analysis demonstrates that the sulfur chains in SPIP have distinct electrochemical signatures from those that are characteristic of bulk elemental sulfur. The cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic cycling data show a distinct multistep charge-transfer process and solid-state lithium–sulfur reaction behavior, and it is clear that this new material provides a promising basis for the development of cathodes for rechargeable batteries. Chemical changes due to the lithiation process are studied using Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, on the basis of which new lithiation mechanisms of covalently bonded sulfur are proposed.

The Hammond Postulate and the Leffler analysis have provided a cornerstone in the understanding of reaction processes in organic chemistry for over 60 years, yet quantitative applications of these methodologies over the range of reactions envisaged in the original works remain elusive. In the present paper, we analyze a series of SN2 reactions in three solvents that lead to endothermic and exothermic reaction processes, and we show that within the hybridization reaction coordinate the SN2 reaction is fully consistent with both treatments. We give new presentations of the reaction energies as a function of reaction progress, which allow the generation of unified reaction coordinate diagrams that show a linear relationship between the hybridization metric of reaction progress and the relative energies of the stationary points on the potential surface as a function of structure and solvent as originally envisaged by Leffler and Hammond.

Ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors based on heterojunctions of conventional (Ge, Si, and GaAs) and wide bandgap semiconductors have been recently demonstrated, but achieving high UV sensitivity and visible-blind photodetection still remains a challenge. Here, we utilized a semitransparent film of p-type semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SC-SWNTs) with an energy gap of 0.68 ± 0.07 eV in combination with a molecular beam epitaxy grown n-ZnO layer to build a vertical p-SC-SWNT/n-ZnO heterojunction-based UV photodetector. The resulting device shows a current rectification ratio of 103, a current photoresponsivity up to 400 A/W in the UV spectral range from 370 to 230 nm, and a low dark current. The detector is practically visible-blind with the UV-to-visible photoresponsivity ratio of 105 due to extremely short photocarrier lifetimes in the one-dimensional SWNTs because of strong electron–phonon interactions leading to exciton formation. The occurrence of coherence phenomenon as a result of the interference of the probability amplitude terms is among the principle features of quantum mechanics concepts. Current experiments display the presence of quantum techniques whose coherence is supplied over large interval times. Specifically, photosynthetic mechanisms in light-harvesting complexes furnish oscillatory behaviors owing to quantum coherence. In this manuscript, we study the coherent quantum energy transfer for a single-excitation and nonlocal correlation in a dimer system (donor+acceptor) displayed by two-level systems (TLSs), interacting with a cavity field with a time-dependent coupling effect considering the realistic situation of coupling between each TLS and the cavity field. We analyze and explore the specific conditions which are viable with real experimental realization for the ultimate transfer of quantum energy and nonlocal quantum correlation. We show that the enhancement of the probability for a single-excitation energy transfer greatly benefits from the energy detuning, photon-number transition, classicality of the field, and the time-dependent coupling effect. We also find that the entanglement between the donor and acceptor is very sensitive to the physical parameters and it can be generated during the coherent energy transfer.

In this Perspective, we present an overview of recent fundamental studies on the nature of the interaction between individual metal atoms and metal clusters and the conjugated surfaces of graphene and carbon nanotube with a particular focus on the electronic structure and chemical bonding at the metal–graphene interface. We discuss the relevance of organometallic complexes of graphitic materials to the development of a fundamental understanding of these interactions and their application in atomtronics as atomic interconnects, high mobility organometallic transistor devices, high-frequency electronic devices, organometallic catalysis (hydrogen fuel generation by photocatalytic water splitting, fuel cells, hydrogenation), spintronics, memory devices, and the next generation energy devices. The development of selective high precision chemical functionalization strategies for device fabrication, in conjunction with associated techniques for patterning graphene wafers with atomic accuracy would provide the necessary basis for a post-CMOS manufacturing technology. This requires a thorough understanding of the principles governing the reactivity and patterning of graphene at the sub-nanometer length scale. This article reviews our quest to delineate the principles of graphene chemistry - that is, the chemistry at the Dirac point and beyond, and the effect of covalent chemistry on the electronic structure, electrical transport and magnetic properties of this low-dimensional material in order to enable the scalable production of graphene-based devices for low- and high-end technology applications.

Large-area mono- and bilayer graphene films were synthesized on Cu foil (~ 1 inch(2)) in about 1 min by a simple ethanol-chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. Raman spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the synthesized graphene films to have polycrystalline structures with 2-5 nm individual crystallite size which is a function of temperature up to 1000°C. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigations showed about 3 atomic% carboxylic (COOH) functional groups were formed during growth. The field-effect transistor devices fabricated using polycrystalline graphene as conducting channel (L(c)=10 μm; W(c)=50 μm) demonstrated a p-type semiconducting behavior with high drive current and Dirac point at ~35 V. This simple one-step method of growing large area polycrystalline graphene films with semiconductor properties and easily functionalizable groups should assist in the realization of potential of polycrystalline graphene for nanoelectronics, sensors and energy storage devices.

Chemical functionalization is a promising route to band gap engineering of graphene. We chemically grafted nitrophenyl groups onto exfoliated single-layer graphene sheets in the form of substrate-supported or free-standing films. Our transport measurements demonstrate that nonsuspended functionalized graphene behaves as a granular metal, with variable range hopping transport and a mobility gap ∼0.1 eV at low temperature. For suspended graphene that allows functionalization on both surfaces, we demonstrate tuning of its electronic properties from a granular metal to a semiconductor in which transport occurs via thermal activation over a transport gap ∼80 meV from 4 to 300 K. This noninvasive and scalable functionalization technique paves the way for CMOS-compatible band gap engineering of graphene electronic devices.

We demonstrate an unusual electrochemical reaction of sulfur with lithium upon encapsulation in narrow-diameter (subnanometer) single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Our study provides mechanistic insight on the synergistic effects of sulfur confinement and Li+ ion solvation properties that culminate in a new mechanism of these sub-nanoscale-enabled reactions (which cannot be solely attributed to the lithiation-delithiation of conventional sulfur). Two types of SWNTs with distinct diameters, produced by electric arc (EA-SWNTs, average diameter 1.55 nm) or high-pressure carbon monoxide (HiPco-SWNTs, average diameter 1.0 nm), are investigated with two comparable electrolyte systems based on tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (TEGDME) and 1,4,7,10,13-pentaoxacyclopentadecane (15-crown-5). Electrochemical analyses indicate that a conventional solution-phase Li-S reaction occurs in EA-SWNTs, which can be attributed to the smaller solvated [Li(TEGDME)]+ and [Li(15-crown-5)]+ ions within the EA-SWNT diameter. In stark contrast, the Li-S confined in narrower diameter HiPco-SWNTs exhibits unusual electrochemical behavior that can be attributed to a solid-state reaction enabled by the smaller HiPco-SWNT diameter compared to the size of solvated Li+ ions. Our results of the electrochemical analyses are corroborated and supported with various spectroscopic analyses including operando Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and first-principles calculations from density functional theory. Taken together, our findings demonstrate that the controlled solid-state lithiation-delithiation of sulfur and an enhanced electrochemical reactivity can be achieved by sub-nanoscale encapsulation and one-dimensional confinement in narrow-diameter SWNTs. We used conductive nanotube films as substrates with which we could systematically vary the conductance to see how this property affects neuronal growth. Here we show that nanotube substrates in a narrow range of conductivity promote the outgrowth of neurites with a decrease in the number of growth cones as well as an increase in cell body area, while at higher conductance these effects disappear.

We report the use of chemically-functionalized water soluble single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) graft copolymers to inhibit endocytosis. The graft copolymers were prepared by the functionalization of SWNTs with poly-ethylene glycol. When added to the culturing medium, these functionalized water soluble SWNTs were able to increase the length of various neuronal processes, neurites, as previously reported. Here we have determined that SWNTs are able to block stimulated membrane endocytosis in neurons, which could then explain the previously noted extended neurite length.

Low color, flexible, space-durable polyimide films with inherent and robust electrical conductivity to dissipate electrostatic charge (ESC) have been under investigation as part of a materials development activity for future NASA space missions. The use of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is one means of achieving this goal. Even though the concentration of SWCNTs needed to achieve ESC dissipation is typically low, it is dependent upon purity, size, dispersion and functionalization. In this study, SWCNTs prepared by the electric arc discharge method were used to synthesize nanocomposites using the LaRCTM CP2 backbone as the matrix. Pristine and functionalized SWCNTs were mixed with an alkoxysilane terminated amide acid of LaRC TM CP2 and the soluble imide form of the polymer and the resultant nanocomposites evaluated for mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. Due to the preparative conditions for the pristine and functionalized SWCNTs, the average aspect ratio for both was comparable. This permitted the assessment of SWCNT functionalization with respect to various interactions (e.g. van der Waals, hydrogen bonding, covalent bond formation, etc.) with the matrix and the macroscopic effects upon nanocomposite properties. The results of the study are described.

The in-plane alignment of graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) in thin thermal interface material (TIM) layers suppresses the though-plane heat transport thus limiting the performance of GNPs in the geometry normally required for thermal management applications. Here we report a disruption of the GNP in-plane alignment by addition of spherical microparticles. The degree of GNP alignment was monitored by measurement of the anisotropy of electrical conductivity which is extremely sensitive to the orientation of high aspect ratio filler particles. Scanning Electron Microscopy images of TIM layer cross-sections confirmed the suppression of the in-plane alignment. The hybrid filler formulations reported herein resulted in a synergistic enhancement of the through-plane thermal conductivity of GNP/Al2O3 and GNP/Al filled TIM layers confirming that the control of GNP alignment is an important parameter in the development of highly efficient GNP and graphene-based TIMs.

Using a radioactive glutamate uptake assay and immunolabeling, we report that single-walled carbon nanotubes, chemically functionalized with polyethylene glycol (SWCNT-PEG), delivered as a colloidal solute, cause an increase in the uptake of extracellular glutamate by astrocytes and an increase in the immunoreactivity of the glutamate transporter GLAST on their cell surface, which is likely a consequence of an increase in the immunoreactivity of glial fibrillary acidic protein. Additional corollary is that astrocytes exposed to SWCNT-PEG became larger and stellate, morphological characteristics of maturation and heightened activity of these glial cells. These results imply that SWCNT-PEG could potentially be used as a viable candidate for neural prosthesis applications, perhaps to alleviate the death toll of neurons due to glutamate excitotoxicity, a pathological process observed in brain and spinal cord injuries.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were dispersed in the form of individual nanotubes and small bundles, and subsequently polymerized to prepare composite films. The nanotubes were first dispersed in dimethylacetamide in the presence of 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene (APB), which was then polymerized with 4,4′-hexafluoroisopropylidiene diphthalic anhydride (6-FDA). Optical microscopy, SEM and TEM studies of the composite show that the SWNTs are homogenously distributed in the polymer matrix, and AFM observations indicate that ∼80% of the dispersed SWNTs are stabilized as individual nanotubes. The freestanding composite films were found to have very good optical, thermal and mechanical properties as well as enhanced electrostatic charge dissipation properties.

Low-temperature (LT) buffer-layer techniques were employed to improve the crystalline quality of ZnO films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE). Photoluminescence (PL) spectra show that CdO, as a hetero-buffer layer with a rock-salt structure, does not improve the quality of ZnO film grown on top. However, by using ZnO as a homo-buffer layer, the crystalline quality can be greatly enhanced, as indicated by PL, atomic force microscopy (AFM), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and Raman scattering. Moreover, the buffer layer grown at 450°C is found to be the best template to further improve the quality of top ZnO film. The mechanisms behind this result are the strong interactions between point defects and threading dislocations in the ZnO buffer layer.

An organic material composed of neutral free radicals based on the spirobiphenalenyl system exhibits a room temperature conductivity of 0.3 siemens per centimeter and a high-symmetry crystal structure. It displays the temperature-independent Pauli paramagnetism characteristic of a metal with a magnetic susceptibility that implies a density of states at the Fermi level of 15.5 states per electron volt per mole. Extended Hückel calculations indicate that the solid is a three-dimensional organic metal with a band width of ∼0.5 electron volts. However, the compound shows activated conductivity (activation energy, 0.054 electron volts) and an optical energy gap of 0.34 electron volts. We argue that these apparently contradictory properties are best resolved in terms of the resonating valence-bond ground state originally suggested by Pauling, but with the modifications introduced by Anderson.

We report a systematic study of the purification of nitric acid treated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) by centrifugation at constant pH. The progress of the purification procedure was followed by estimating the purity by solution-phase near-infrared spectroscopy, and it was found that the sediment obtained by centrifugation at pH 2 had the highest purity. The stability of the aqueous dispersions of SWNTs and carbonaceous impurities (CIMP) after nitric acid treatment was investigated by measuring their zeta potential and the concentration of acidic sites. We found that, at lower pH, the CIMP has a higher zeta potential than nitric acid treated SWNTs, and it is this factor that allowed the separation of the carbonaceous impurities via centrifugation and the concomitant purification of the SWNTs.

Due to their electrical, chemical, mechanical and thermal properties, carbon nanotubes are one of the most promising materials for the electronics, computer and aerospace industries. Here, we discuss their properties in the context of future applications in biotechnology and biomedicine. The purification and chemical modification of carbon nanotubes with organic, polymeric and biological molecules are discussed. Additionally we review their uses in biosensors, assembly of structures and devices, scanning probe microscopy and as substrates for neuronal growth. We note that additional toxicity studies of carbon nanotubes are necessary so that exposure guidelines and safety regulations can be established in a timely manner.

We report the synthesis of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) graft copolymer. This polymer was prepared by the functionalization of SWNTs with polyethyleneimine (PEI). We used this graft copolymer, SWNT-PEI, as a substrate for cultured neurons and found that it promotes neurite outgrowth and branching.

Control of the conductivity of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is crucial for the use of carbon nanotubes in molecular electronics. We report a new fundamental characteristic of semiconducting SWNTs: the persistent photoconductivity of chemically modified carbon nanotube films. Illumination of carboxylated semiconducting SWNTs with ultraviolet or visible light causes a persistent decrease in the conductivity of semiconducting films. The photoinduced conductivity persists in the dark with a characteristic half-life of 35 s to 1.2 × 103 s at room temperature and an activation energy of 0.35 eV. Infrared illumination restores the conductivity of SWNT films. Ultraviolet and visible light illumination partially refills empty valence band states of chemically modified SWNTs by electron injection from the dopant sites. Photoinduced injection of electrons is accompanied by a decrease of the conductivity of the p-doped SWNT film, because of neutralization of holes by injected electrons. Covalent attachment o...

A facile method for assembling carbon nanotubes (CNT) on ferromagnetic metal contacts is described. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) with a magnetic cap were fabricated by thermally evaporating nickel on top of a vertical array of MWNTs grown on silicon. Magnetic interaction between the magnets on the nanotubes and lithographically patterned ferromagnetic electrodes caused the relative alignment and directed placement of nanotubes. The lithographically patterned electrodes were further modified using electrochemical deposition to form asymmetric ferromagnetic electrodes as well as improve the electrical and magnetic interactions at the contacts. MWNTs thus assembled showed characteristics that have been established for various nanotube device configurations. This validates the assembling technique for exploring charge- and spin-based electronic devices.

This study demonstrates a novel approach toward development of advanced chemical sensors based on chemically functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). SWNTs with covalently attached poly(m-aminobenzene sulfonic acid), SWNT-PABS, have shown improved sensor performance for detection of NH3. Compared to purified SWNTs, devices fabricated with SWNT-PABS have shown more than 2 times higher change of resistance upon exposure to NH3. Importantly, the SWNT-PABS sensors rapidly recover their resistance when NH3 is replaced with nitrogen. Exposure to NH3 induces significant changes in the electronic structure of SWNT-PABS, which allow detection of NH3 at concentrations as low as 5 ppm. Thin film deposited between interdigitated electrodes was explored as a device configuration for development of gas sensors.

The measurement of the bulk purity of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) is an important outstanding problem. We report a solution-phase near-IR (NIR) spectroscopic study of a range of carbon materials with an emphasis on SWNTs, and we show that NIR spectroscopy is an extremely powerful tool in the assessment of the carbonaceous purity of SWNTs. We demonstrate the applicability of Beer's law for all of the carbon materials included in this study within a range of concentrations in dimethylformamide (DMF), and we are able to solve for the effective extinction coefficients. By analyzing the areal absorptivities of the second interband transition of semiconducting SWNTs for a number of samples of differing purities, we are able to derive an absolute molar extinction coefficient for the carbonaceous impurities in SWNT samples. We demonstrate significant progress toward the establishment of an absolute scale for the bulk carbonaceous purity of SWNTs.

The nature of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)−solvent interaction that is responsible for the stabilization of ultrasonicated dispersions was investigated using various techniques. It was found that the sonochemical decomposition and polymerization of o-dichlorobenzene (ODCB) is necessary for the stabilization of SWNTs in ODCB. The rate of decomposition of ODCB was shown to be dependent on the shape of the sonication vessel. The decomposition products of sonicated ODCB interact irreversibly with SWNTs. Under similar sonication conditions, N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) did not induce discernible modification of the near-infrared spectrum of the dispersed SWNTs.

The passage of a current through a solid requires a pathway for the movement of electrons or holes. A new class of phenalenyl-based neutral radical molecular conductors has recently been reported; a distinctive feature of these molecular solids is the absence of any obvious conducting pathway(s). These radicals do not stack in the solid state, and the requisite carbon−carbon contacts are all larger than the sum of the van der Waals distances. Magnetic susceptibility measurements show that the first compound to be isolated behaves as a free radical with one spin per molecule, apparently supporting the idea that there is little interaction between the molecules in the solid state. Nevertheless, this radical shows the highest conductivity (σRT = 0.05 S/cm), of any neutral organic solid, and the conduction mechanism is presently unresolved. We report EHT calculations of the band electronic structure of substituted pentacene derivatives and the polymorphs of the parent compound. The results show that there are wide disparities among the bandwidths and electronic dimensionalities of these compounds. The parent pentacene polymorphs are 2-dimensional in their band electronic structure with moderate dispersions; the bandwidths in the 14.1 Å d-spacing polymorph are noticeably larger than for the 14.5 Å d-spacing polymorph, reported by Campbell. Whereas the parent pentacene polymorphs adopt the well-known herringbone packing, the new, substituted pentacenes are noticeably different in their solid state structures and this is reflected in the band electronic structures. TMS adopts a highly 1-dimensional structure that leads to a large bandwidth along the stacking direction; TIPS also adopts a stacked structure, but because the molecules are laterally interleaved in the fashion of bricks in a wall, this compound is strongly 2-dimensional.

Alterations in glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) levels accompany the changes in the morphology and proliferation of astrocytes induced by colloidal solutes and films of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). To determine if GFAP is required for the effects of CNTs on astrocytes, we used astrocytes isolated from GFAP null mice. We find that selected astrocytic changes induced by CNTs are mediated by GFAP, i.e., perimeter, shape, and cell death for solutes, and proliferation for films.

Full-length single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were rendered soluble in common organic solvents by noncovalent (ionic) functionalization of the carboxylic acid groups present in the purified SWNTs. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that the majority of the SWNTs ropes were exfoliated into small ropes (2−5 nm in diameter) and individual nanotubes with lengths of several micrometers during the dissolution process. The combination of multiwavelength laser excitation Raman scattering spectroscopy and solution-phase visible and near-infrared spectroscopies was used to characterize the library of SWNTs that is produced in current preparations. The average diameter of metallic nanotubes was found by Raman spectroscopy to be smaller than that of semiconducting nanotubes in the various types of full-length SWNT preparations. This observation sheds new light on the mechanism of SWNT formation.

The problem of resolving molecular components of the electronic structure of complex, organic solids with respect to their chemical and orbital character has been approached using soft X-ray absorption (SXA) and soft X-ray emission (SXE) spectroscopy. These techniques are powerful probes of the site and angular-momentum resolved partial density of states (PDOS) for both occupied and unoccupied states. Therefore these spectroscopies are particularly suited for an analysis of the density of states of multi-atomic, complex materials as the ET-based organic conductors, allowing site-specific electronic structure to be measured. We present a preliminary picture of the electronic structure of κ-ET 2 Cu(SCN) 2 and κ-ET 2 Cu[N(CN) 2 ]Br as measured by SXE and SXA performed at the C1s and N1s core levels.

We have introduced hybridization as the unifying metric for the degree of structural progress in organic reaction processes. In the present paper we show how the hybridization metric may be applied to other atoms in the reacting molecule to provide information on bond- making and bond-breaking and the degree of concertedness in chemical reactions. The study of chemical reactions is probably the most important facet of chemistry. Considering the maturity of the subject, it is surprising to find that there has been no universal scale for the progress of chemical reactions that allows comparisons to be drawn even among those reactions that simply involve the formation and cleavage of carbon-carbon bonds. Most previous attempts to quantify reaction progress have relied on some function of the interatomic distances that suffer a significant change during the chemical transformation; while this approach is suitable for controlling the position of a structure on the potential surface, it is less useful as an indicator. We have recently introduced hybridization (with scaling based on the pyramidalization angle), as the general metric for reaction progress and as the universal reaction coordinate of the chemical reaction (1). In most cases it is possible to associate an ideal initial and final hybridization with the atoms that are involved in the bond forming and breaking in chemical reaction processes, and together these provide well defined boundary conditions for the reaction metric (Fig. 1). The most common reaction processes involve conversions among sp 2 and sp 3 hybrids in the reacting atoms. By use of the p-orbital axis vector (POAV) analysis it is possible to solve analytically for the intermediate hybridizations (2,3), and thus a general metric may be obtained for almost any organic reaction process. The hybridization metric is structurally based, and is valid for the reactants, products, transition states and intermediates of many organic reaction processes. By adopting this reaction metric, it is possible for the first time, to apply the Hammond postulate in a quantitative manner across a variety of reactions (1).

The problem of resolving molecular components of the electronic structure of complex, organic solids with respect to their chemical and orbital character has been approached using core-level photon spectroscopies. Specifically, the bulk C 2poccupied and unoccupied partial densities of states (PDOS) of the organic superconductorsκ-ET2Cu(SCN)2andκ-ET2Cu[N(CN)2]Br were measured using a combination of high-resolution soft X-ray absorption (SXA) and soft X-ray emission (SXE). The PDOS was also calculated using a tight binding model, and the measured spectra compared directly to that predicted by the calculations. The emission and absorption spectra from both materials were found to be quite similar, reflecting mostly contributions from the common conductive ET layers. The presence of two nonequivalent carbon sites of the ET molecule was identified in the SXA spectra. Contributions from theπandσstates were identified in the emission spectra. The occupied C 2pbandwidth was found to be approximately 17eV. An observed dependence of the SXE spectra on the excitation energy is partly accounted for by a simple model that considers the presence of the two nonequivalent ET carbon sites. We also find evidence in the SXE spectra for a high degree of localization in the lowest unoccupied states.

Electroreduction of the 2,5-thiophene-bridged bis(1,2,3,5-diselenadiazolylium) salt [T-2,5-Se][SbF6]2 in acetonitrile, at a Pt wire and in the presence of iodine, affords a highly conductive ( sigma = 102 S cm-1 at 293 K) 1:1 charge-transfer (CT) salt [T-2,5-Se][I], the crystal structure of which has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals belong to the orthorhombic space group Fm2m, a = 3.544(2), b = 10.9808(16), c = 31.464(5) Å , V = 1224.5(7) Å 3. The structure consists of perfectly superimposed pi -stacks of molecular units bridged by columns of disordered iodines. This packing motif is similar to that of the related 1,3-benzene-bridged derivative [1,3-Se][I], but the lateral intermolecular Se···Se interactions linking adjacent pi -stacks are considerably shorter, indicative of a more isotropic electronic structure for [T-2,5-Se][I]. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on [T-2,5-Se][I] nonetheless indicate a phase transition to a diamagnetic state near 200 K, behaviour similar to that observed for [1,3-Se][I]. The electronic structures and transport properties of the two compounds are discussed in the light of extended Hückel band-structure calculations.Key words: diselenadiazolyl, diradical, charge-transfer salt, magnetic susceptibility, crystal structure.

The reactivity of the fullerenes is primarily a function of their strain, as measured by the pyramidalization angle or curvature of the conjugated carbon atoms. The development of faceting in the structure of large icosahedral fullerenes leads to a minimum in the value of the maximum fullerene pyramidalization angle that lies in the vicinity of C 240 . On this basis it is argued that C 240 will be the most chemically inert fullerene. This observation explains the production of [10,10] single-walled nanotubes because a C 240 hemisphere is required for the nucleation of such tubes.

Thermal interface materials (TIMs) are crucial components of high density electronics and the high thermal conductivity of graphite makes this material an attractive candidate for such applications. We report an investigation of the in-plane and through-plane electrical and thermal conductivities of thin thermal interface layers of graphite nanoplatelet (GNP) based composites. The in-plane electrical conductivity exceeds its through-plane counterpart by three orders of magnitude, whereas the ratio of the thermal conductivities is about 5. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that the anisotropy in the transport properties is due to the in-plane alignment of the GNPs which occurs during the formation of the thermal interface layer. Because the alignment in the thermal interface layer suppresses the through-plane component of the thermal conductivity, the anisotropy strongly degrades the performance of GNP-based composites in the geometry required for typical thermal management applications and must be taken into account in the development of GNP-based TIMs.

Chemically modified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) with varying degrees of functionalization were utilized for the fabrication of SWNT thin film catalyst support layers (CSLs) in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), which were suitable for benchmarking against the US DOE 2017 targets. Use of the optimum level of SWNT -COOH functionality allowed the construction of a prototype SWNT-based PEMFC with total Pt loading of 0.06 mg(Pt)/cm²--well below the value of 0.125 mg(Pt)/cm² set as the US DOE 2017 technical target for total Pt group metals (PGM) loading. This prototype PEMFC also approaches the technical target for the total Pt content per kW of power (0.125 g(PGM)/kW) at cell potential 0.65 V: a value of 0.15 g(Pt)/kW was achieved at 80°C/22 psig testing conditions, which was further reduced to 0.12 g(Pt)/kW at 35 psig back pressure.

Cosublimation of 2,5-furanbis(1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl) [F-2,5-S] and iodine affords 1:1 and 2:1 charge-transfer salts, [F-2,5-S][I] and [F-2,5-S]2[I]. Cosublimation of 2,6-pyridinebis(1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl) [P-2,6-S] and iodine affords uniquely the 2:1 charge-transfer salt [P-2,6-S]2[I]. Crystals of the latter belong to the space group P21/c, a = 3.434(3), b = 9.8914(9), c = 30.803(4) A, β = 91.52(3)°, V = 1045.9(9) A3, Z = 2. The structure consists of [P-2,6-S] molecules stacked along the x direction. Pairs of stacks are linked head-on through iodine atoms, which themselves form disordered stacks running parallel to x. The internal structural parameters of the two CN2S2 rings within each molecule suggest that one (linked to iodine) is formally uncharged, while the other is partially oxidized. This latter ring is heavily coordinated through S- - -N linkages to neighboring CN2S2 rings and pyridine. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on [P-2,6-S]2[I] indicate that it is diamagnetic below 220 K.

Electroreduction of 1,3- and 1,4-benzene-bridged bis(diselenadiazolium) salts [1,4-Se][SbF6]2 and [1,4-Se][SbF6]2 in acetonitrile, at a Pt wire and in the presence of iodine affords the 1:1 charge-transfer salts [1,4-Se][I] and [1,3-Se][I]. Crystals of [1,4-Se][I] belong to the monoclinic space group C2/m, with FW = 598.9, a = 10.586(2), b = 16.713(2), c = 3.5006(14) A, β = 104.26(2)°, V = 600.2(3) A3, Z = 2. Crystals of [1,3-Se][I] belong to the orthorhombic space group Ima2, with FW = 598.9, a = 28.489(7), b = 3.543(2), c = 12.283(2) A, V = 1239.8(8) A3, Z = 4. In the presence of an excess of iodine, electrocrystallization of [1,4-Se]2+ affords the mixed iodide/triiodide salt [1,4-Se][I][I3], space group C2/c, FW = 979.59, a = 12.862(3), b = 15.063(2), c = 9.028(3) A, β = 100.62(2)°, V = 1719.1(7) A3, Z = 4. Condensation of oxamidrazone with sulfur dichloride in acetonitrile affords 4,4‘-bis(1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolium) dichloride in moderate yield. Reduction of this salt with triphenylantimony yields the diradical 4,4‘-bis(1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl) [S2N2C−CN2S2], which has been isolated and characterized in the solid state as its dimer [S2N2C−CN2S2]2. The difference in magnetic susceptibility of graphite and diamond prompted Raman to postulate the flow of currents around the ring system of graphite in response to an applied magnetic field. The discovery of new carbon allotropes, the fullerenes, has furthered our understanding of this phenomenon and its relationship to aromatic character. C60 and the other fullerenes exhibit both diamagnetic and paramagnetic ring currents, which exert subtle effects on the magnetic properties of these molecules and provide evidence for the existence of π-electrons mobile in three dimensions.
