Feeding treatments were imposed in two feeding trials involving Cobb broiler and Bond Brown layer birds. Three feed additives (biochar, bentonite and zeolite) were supplied at four rates (0, 1, 2 and 4% w/w) in feed, as previously considered in the context of animal production, was considered in the context of Excreta chemical and water retention properties and granulation characteristics of decomposed excreta (manure) were characterised. At field capacity (- 0.01 MPa), manure produced from control and 4% bentonite diets contained significantly (p = 0.001) more water (at 1.93 and 2.44% v/v water, respectively) than zeolite and biochar treatments. Manure mesoporosity was significantly (p = 0.015) higher in 2 and 4% bentonite treatments than other feed additives. Fresh excreta from layer birds on the control diet contained 6% w/dw N and 35% C, which was decreased to 2.6% N and 28% C after decomposition, with C:N ratio changing from 5.9 to 12.1. Ammonia loss was higher from biochar and zeolite manures than control or bentonite, associated with higher pH in the biochar and zeolite manures. More N was unaccounted from bentonite manure than other treatments, presumably lost as N 2 O or N 2 , a result linked to its higher moisture content and its enhanced rate of denitrification. The highest proportion of granules in the size class desired for fertilizer spreading was achieved using decomposed manure from the 1 and 2% w/w biochar treatments of the broiler trial, and 1 and 2% zeolite and 4% biochar treatments of the layer trial. According to the World Health Organisation, antibiotics are rapidly losing potency in every country of the world. Poultry are currently perceived as a major source of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance. There is an urgent need for new and natural ways to control pathogens in poultry and humans alike. Porous, cation rich, aluminosilicate minerals, zeolites can be used as a feed additive in poultry rations, demonstrating multiple productivity benefits. Next generation sequencing of the 16S rRNA marker gene was used to phylogenetically characterize the fecal microbiota and thus investigate the ability and dose dependency of zeolite in terms of anti-pathogenic effects. A natural zeolite was used as a feed additive in laying hens at 1, 2, and 4% w/w for a 23 week period. At the end of this period cloacal swabs were collected to sample faecal microbial communities. A significant reduction in carriage of bacteria within the phylum Proteobacteria, especially in members of the pathogen-rich family Enterobacteriaceae, was noted across all three concentrations of zeolite. Zeolite supplementation of feed resulted in a reduction in the carriage of a number of poultry pathogens without disturbing beneficial bacteria. This effect was, in some phylotypes, correlated with the zeolite concentration. A range of feed supplements, including antibiotics, have been commonly used in poultry production to improve health and productivity. Alternative methods are needed to suppress pathogen loads and maintain productivity. As an alternative to antibiotics use, we investigated the ability of biochar, bentonite and zeolite as separate 4% feed additives, to selectively remove pathogens without reducing microbial richness and diversity in the gut. Neither biochar, bentonite nor zeolite made any significant alterations to the overall richness and diversity of intestinal bacterial community. However, reduction of some bacterial species, including some potential pathogens was detected. The microbiota of bentonite fed animals were lacking all members of the order Campylobacterales. Specifically, the following operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were absent: an OTU 100% identical to Campylobacter jejuni; an OTU 99% identical to Helicobacter pullorum; multiple Gallibacterium anatis (>97%) related OTUs; Bacteroides dorei (99%) and Clostridium aldenense (95%) related OTUs. Biochar and zeolite treatments had similar but milder effects compared to bentonite. Zeolite amended feed was also associated with significant reduction in the phylum Proteobacteria. All three additives showed potential for the control of major poultry zoonotic pathogens.

This overview focuses on the use of 15N labeled fertilizers to provide information about nitrogen (N) cycling processes in conventional vegetable production systems. Recent interest in determining fertilizer N use efficiency (FNUE) for vegetables may be due to the increase of global vegetable production, rise in N fertilizer costs, consumer preference for diversified plant-based diets, and interest in purchasing sustainably produced fresh foods. Vegetable production is known to require intensive amounts of N fertilizers, where the inefficiencies in N utilization can reach lower than 50%. To understand such systems comprehensively, the 15N technique was found helpful to investigate the co-factors involved in plant N uptake and identify sustainable solutions for economic vegetable production. Through a summary of the 15N studies, FNUE was found to range between 9 and 67%, with an average of 23% to 34%. Therefore, in most cases, over 70% of the applied N remained as residual or unaccounted for N in the soil post-harvest, which poses a significant risk for nitrate leaching and nitrous oxide emissions in vegetable systems. Despite advancements in production technologies, such as drip-irrigated plasticulture systems, inefficiencies persist due to excessive N fertilizer application and suboptimal timing of applications. While the cost of 15N-labeled fertilizers can be high, their use has provided critical insights into realistic N management scenarios, thus enhancing our understanding of important N transformation processes in vegetable systems. Additionally, the 15N natural abundance (δ15N) method facilitated the qualitative study of complex systems, where accurately labeling material such as enhanced efficiency fertilizers (EEFs), can be challenging with traditional 15N enrichment techniques. Further innovation of the 15N technique is necessary to study sustainable N management practices, including the use of EEFs, biochar, plant growth-promoting bacteria, and nitrification inhibitors, which are of increasing interest to the industry. Key takeaways from the 15N fertilizer studies emphasize the importance of improving N management strategies that optimize the source, placement, timing, and rate of N application to improve FNUE, minimize N pollution, and reduce reliance on economically prohibitive remediation approaches. Impacts of salinity become severe when the soil is deficient in oxygen. Oxygation (using aerated water for subsurface drip irrigation of crop) could minimize the impact of salinity on plants under oxygen-limiting soil environments. Pot experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of oxygation (12% air volume/volume of water) on vegetable soybean (moderately salt tolerant) and cotton (salt tolerant) in a salinized vertisol at 2, 8, 14, 20 dS/m EC(e). In vegetable soybean, oxygation increased above ground biomass yield and water use efficiency (WUE) by 13% and 22%, respectively, compared with the control. Higher yield with oxygation was accompanied by greater plant height and stem diameter and reduced specific leaf area and leaf Na+ and Cl- concentrations. In cotton, oxygation increased lint yield and WUE by 18% and 16%, respectively, compared with the control, and was accompanied by greater canopy light interception, plant height and stem diameter. Oxygation also led to a greater rate of photosynthesis, higher relative water content in the leaf, reduced crop water stress index and lower leaf water potential. It did not, however, affect leaf Na+ or Cl- concentration. Oxygation invariably increased, whereas salinity reduced the K+ : Na+ ratio in the leaves of both species. Oxygation improved yield and WUE performance of salt tolerant and moderately tolerant crops under saline soil environments, and this may have a significant impact for irrigated agriculture where saline soils pose constraints to crop production.

The stability-related asymmetry in roots, trunk, and crown is always found as a typical effect of biomechanical design under heterogeneous stimulus environment. However, it appears to be a conflict between the biomechanical principle and the source-sink distance of nutrient allocation strategies when the orientational asymmetry occurs. Adaptive growth strategies associated with biomass and nutrient allocation remain to be explored. This study used both the minirhizotron and harvest methods to test the effect of trunk inclination of camphor trees (Cinnamomum camphora) and found that the asymmetry coefficient of root biomass was − 0.29, showing more root biomass distributed on the other side of trunk inclination. This side had larger surface area and volume of fine roots, the smaller in diameter and the larger in length of the first level roots, higher leaf total nitrogen (TN) and slightly higher root TN content, higher activities of antioxidant enzymes SOD, POD, and CAT in leaves, and lower soluble sugar and protein. The biomass, morphological and physiological characteristics suggest that trees may follow both the biomechanical design and source-sink distance of nutrient allocation strategies. In recent decades an extensive mortality and decline of Quercus suber populations mainly caused by Phytophthora cinnamomi has been observed. In the current study, a chestnut gene homologous to ginkbilobin-2 (Cast_Gnk2-like), which in Ginkgo biloba codifies an antifungal protein, was transferred into cork oak somatic embryos of three different embryogenic lines by Agrobacterium mediated transformation. The transformation efficiency varied on the genotype from 2.5 to 9.2%, and a total of 22 independent transformed lines were obtained. The presence of Cast_Gnk2-like gene in transgenic embryos was verified in all lines by PCR. The number of transgene copies was estimated by qPCR in embryogenic lines with high proliferation ability and it varied between 1 and 5. In addition, the expression levels of Cast_Gnk2-like gene were determined in the embryogenic lines, with higher levels in lines derived from the genotype ALM6-WT. Transgenic plants were obtained from all transgenic lines and evaluated after cold storage of the somatic embryos for 2 months and subsequent transfer to germination medium. In vitro tolerance tests made under controlled conditions and following zoospore treatment showed that plants overexpressing Cast_Gnk2-like gene improved tolerance against Pc when compared to wild type ones. Eleocharis dulcis (Burm. f.) Trin. ex Hensch., commonly known as Chinese water chestnut, is a traditional aquatic vegetable in China, and now is widely cultivated throughout the world because of its high nutritional value and unique tastes. Here, we report the assembly of a 493.24 Mb telomere-to-telomere (T2T) genome of E. dulcis accomplished by integrating ONT ultra-long reads, PacBio long reads and Hi-C data. The reference genome was anchored onto 111 gap-free chromosomes, containing 48.31% repeat elements and 33,493 predicted protein-coding genes. Whole genome duplication (WGD) and inter-genomic synteny analyses indicated that chromosome breakage and genome duplication in E. dulcis possibly occurred multiple times during genome evolution after its divergence from a common ancestor with Rhynchospora breviuscula at ca. 35.6 Mya. A comparative time-course transcriptome analysis of corm development revealed different patterns of gene expression between cultivated and wild accessions with the highest number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs, 15,870) at the middle swelling stage and some of the DEGs were significantly enriched for starch metabolic process. The hypothesis that hyperaccumulation of certain metals in plants may play a role in osmotic adjustment under water stress (drought) was tested in the context of nickel hyperaccumulator Stackhousia tryonii. Field-collected mature plants of S. tryonii, grown in native ultramafic soil, were pruned to soil level and the re-growth exposed to five levels of water stress (20, 40, 60, 80 and 100% field capacity; FC) for 20 weeks. Water stress had significant (P<0.05) influence on growth (biomass), water potential and shoot Ni concentrations, with progressively more impact as water stress was increased from 80 to 40% FC. Shoot Ni concentration increased significantly from 3,400 microg g(-1) dry weight (at 100% FC) to 9,400 microg g(-1) dry weight (at 20% FC). Assuming that Ni is uniformly distributed through the shoot tissue, the Ni concentration could account for 100% at the 80 and 60% FC conditions, and 50% at the 40 and 20% FC conditions of plant osmotic regulation. The results are consistent with a role of Ni in osmotic adjustment and protection of S. tryonii plants against drought.

Background and Aims: Nitrate is the major nitrogen source for many plants. The first step of the nitrate assimilation pathway is the reduction of nitrate to nitrite, catalysed by nitrate reductase (NR). Circadian oscillations in expression and activity of NR have been demonstrated in many plant species. The pathway by which this circadian behaviour is regulated remains to be elucidated. In this study, based on recent experimental observations, a mathematical model is proposed to explain the origin of diurnal and circadian oscillations in NR gene expression and enzyme activity., Methods: The dynamic model is based on the feedback interconnections between NR and its substrate, nitrate. In the model, NR activity is regulated at the transcriptional level, in response to the balance between nitrate influx and reduction, and at the post-translational levels in response to signals from carbon assimilation. Conditions for the model system to generate self-sustained circadian oscillations are investigated by numerical simulations., Key Results and Conclusions: Under light/dark cycles, the simulation results are in agreement with the observed diurnal pattern of changes in leaf nitrate concentration, NR transcript level and NR activity. Within a range of kinetic parameter values, circadian oscillation behaviour persists even under constant light, with periods of approx. 24 h. These simulation results suggest that sustained circadian oscillations can originate from the feedback interactions between NR and its substrate, nitrate, without the need to postulate the existence of an endogenous 'circadian clock'.

Background and Aims: Stackhousia tryonii, a rare nickel hyperaccumulating herb, is endemic to ultramafic (serpentine) soils of central Queensland, Australia. The effects of eight dormancy-relieving treatments on germination of stored seeds of Stackhousia tryonii were investigated under controlled light and temperature conditions. *, Methods: The treatments were: untreated (control i), leached and dehydrated (primed control ii), treating with gibberellic acid (150 and 300 microM), smoke extract (5 and 10 %, v/v) and potassium cyanide (40 and 80 mM). *, Key Results: Freshly harvested seeds did not germinate. Germination percentage increased with time of storage for up to 18 months (38.3 %). Gibberellin, smoke extract and cyanide treatments did not significantly improve germination. Light did not affect seed germination and there was no interaction between dormancy-relieving treatments and light. A significant inhibition of germination occurred in seeds treated with 5 % (but not 10 %) aqueous smoke extract. Saturated fatty acids, predominantly tridecanoic (C13:0), constituted about 90 % of the total fatty acids in the oil of freshly harvested seeds. In contrast, there was increased accumulation (>75 %) of mono-unsaturated (oleic, c18:1) and poly-unsaturated (linoleic, c18:2; linolenic, c18:3) fatty acids in the oil of stored seeds. *, Conclusions: Seeds of S. tryonii require an after-ripening period for germination.

Agricultural diversification and high-quality products deriving from sustainable crops such as hemp can represent a solution to revitalize marginal areas and reverse land abandonment. This study aimed at comparing four different hemp cultivars (Carmagnola Selezionata, "CS"; Futura 75, "FUT"; Felina 32, "FEL"; Secuieni Jubileu, "JUB") to provide information to select the best suited cultivar for cultivation in mountain marginal areas and for specific end-use applications. Hemp cultivars were cultivated in a single experimental field to compare their ecological and agronomic behavior (duration of life cycle phases, plant size and biomass allocation, and plant resource-use strategies). Through metabolomic analysis of both vegetative and reproductive parts of the plants we tested the presence of substances of nutraceutical interest and traced seed nutritional profile. The four cultivars had different ecological and agronomic behavior, and nutritional profile. We found several compounds with potential pharmaceutical and nutraceutical values in all parts of the plant (leaves, inflorescences, and stems). JUB resulted the most suitable for seed production while CS showed the highest content of bioactive compounds in flowers and leaves. FUT, showed the best suitability for multi-purpose cultivation, while FEL seemed to be not appropriate for the cultivation in mountain area. The multi-disciplinary approach we adopted was effective in distinguish across hemp cultivars and provided information to farmers for the selection of the best hemp cultivar to select. Hemp had a high potential for cultivation in marginal lands, demonstrating to be an economic resource due to its multi-purpose use and to the possibility to generate high-added values products. Sustainable agricultural practices help to manage and use natural resources efficiently. Due to global climate and geospatial land design, soil texture, soil–water content (SWC), and other parameters vary greatly; thus, real time, robust, and accurate soil analytical measurements are difficult to be developed. Conventional statistical analysis tools take longer to analyze and interpret data, which may have delayed a crucial decision. Therefore, this review paper is presented to develop the researcher's insight toward robust, accurate, and quick soil analysis using artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning (DL), and machine learning (ML) platforms to attain robustness in SWC and soil texture analysis. Machine learning algorithms, such as random forests, support vector machines, and neural networks, can be employed to develop predictive models based on available soil data and auxiliary environmental variables. Geostatistical techniques, including kriging and co-kriging, help interpolate and extrapolate soil property values to unsampled locations, improving the spatial representation of the data set. The false positivity in SWC results and bugs in advanced detection techniques are also evaluated, which may lead to wrong agricultural practices. Moreover, the advantages of AI data processing over general statistical analysis for robust and noise-free results have also been discussed in light of smart irrigation technologies. Conclusively, the conventional statistical tools for SWCs and soil texture analysis are not enough to practice and manage ergonomic land management. Campylobacter infections and campylobacteriosis-associated post-infectious sequelae are a significant global health burden that needs to be addressed from a specific African perspective. We conducted a comprehensive literature search on NCBI PubMed to compile a comprehensive narrative review article on Campylobacter infections in Africa, focusing on key aspects in human and veterinary medicine as well as food hygiene. We specifically focused on the epidemiology of enteropathogenic Campylobacter spp. in sub-Saharan and North Africa considering antimicrobial susceptibility. The most significant sequela resulting from molecular mimicry to Campylobacter surface structures is the Guillain-Barré syndrome, which was mainly examined in the context of limited studies conducted in African populations. A dedicated subsection is allocated to the limited research on the veterinary medically important species Campylobacter fetus. There are significant differences in the composition of the gut microbiome, especially in rural areas, which affect the colonization with Campylobacter spp. and the manifestation of campylobacteriosis. There may be a problem of overdiagnosis due to asymptomatic colonization, particularly in the detection of Campylobacter using molecular biological techniques. To reduce the colonization and infection rate of Campylobacter, we propose implementing several control measures and urge further research to improve the current understanding of the peculiarities of campylobacteriosis in Africa. It is difficult to reach the water needed in agriculture. For this reason, insufficient irrigation causes yield and quality losses in plants. The aim of this study was to determine some quality parameters of both flesh of melon and melon seed irrigated with different irrigation regimes. Melon cultivar (Cucumis melo L.) was irrigated by the drip method from transplantation to the beginning of vegetative development, flowering-fruit binding, and fruit development-ripening. In this context, 8 irrigation groups were formed. Sugars, total phenolic compounds, titratable acidity, antioxidant activity and color analyzes were performed on flesh of melons. Oil content and fatty acid composition of melon seeds were also determined. The titratable acidity of samples varied from 0.098 to 0.159%. Irrigation regime had a significant effect on sucrose and total sugar content. Total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities of samples were ranged from 80.6 to 244.8 (mg GAE/kg) and 0.17 to 0.38 (mmol TE/kg), respectively. The groups of non-irrigated and irrigated at vegetative-fruit development-ripening periods had the highest amount of total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities. Among the color parameters, there were significant differences only in a* and h values. Although palmitic acid and oil content of seeds were not different, linoleic, oleic, and stearic acids were affected significantly by irrigation regime. As a result, in terms of sugar content, amount of phenolic compound and antioxidant activity, irrigation during VF period can be suggested for cultivation of melons in arid and semi-arid regions. In order to investigate the effects of water stress and nitrogen fertilizer application on remobilization and grain yield of barley genotypes, two separate experiments were conducted at the Agricultural and Natural Resources Research Station of Miandoab during the years of 2014–2016 as a split plot based on randomized complete block design with three replications. The treatments included 5 genotypes and four nitrogen fertilizer levels (control or without fertilizer, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha−1 nitrogen (N) fertilizer). Under normal conditions, the maximum remobilization was obtained at 0 and 50 kg N application levels. N application increased non-significantly the remobilization under water deficit stress. The highest (1.22 g.m−2) and lowest (0.91 g.m−2) remobilization were recorded in 100 kg ha−1 N application and control. Bahman genotype, and Karoon and NK1272 genotypes had the highest remobilization under well irrigation and under water deficit, respectively. The highest remobilization to grain yield was related to 100 and 150 kg ha−1 N application. The comparison of N application levels showed that the highest current photosynthesis contribution from seed yield belongs to N application of 150 kg ha−1. Under water deficit, it was allocated to 50 kg ha−1. In conclusion, the greater grain yield in tolerant genotypes under water deficit was due to remobilization of unstructured carbohydrates from shoot to grain. Thus, it seems that selection of genotypes with higher translocated dry matter and contribution of assimilate in grain filling under water deficit, the suitable way for achieving cultivars with high grain yield under water deficit condition. Salt stress causes plants to undergo metabolic and physiological disturbances, affecting growth, development, quality, and yield. With the increasing demand for food in the world and this environmental problem, the cultivation of salt-tolerant varieties or lines of crops is needed to compensate for the demands of food for mankind. This study was designed for salt tolerance problems; the four lines of Linum usitatissimum in terms of the plant's agronomic attributes, yield, different metabolites (secondary and primary), antioxidant enzymatic activities, endogenous hormones, lipid peroxidation and ion analysis. This research was completely randomized-design (CRD) and four lines of flax (Alsi ARI-50, Alsi ARI-22, Alsi ARI-20 and Alsi ARI-1) were raised using water (control) and 150 mM NaCl in irrigation water. Salinity had a negative impact on different growth parameters, photosynthetic pigments-level (Chlorophyll a, Chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and chlorophyll a/b ratio), Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and different essential ions. On the other hand, at the same salt concentrations, carotenoid content, sugar level, total protein, lipids, phenolic content, proline amount, flavonoid, tannin, β carotene, antioxidant level, lipid peroxidation, catalase activity, guaiacol peroxidase activity, ascorbic acid, salicylic acid, sodium and chloride ions significantly increased. Based on the present study, it was concluded that Alsi ARI-50 and Alsi ARI-22 showed higher salt tolerance compared to the other lines based on measured parameters. This study investigated the effect of locality and axial position on the morphological, physical, and mechanical properties of iron bamboo (Guadua angustifolia Kunt.) and solid bamboo [Dendrocalamus strictus (Roxb.) Nees] from three locations in the Philippines: Laguna, Baguio City, and Nueva Vizcaya. Morphological properties were assessed by measuring culm height, internode length (IL), culm diameter (CD), and culm wall thickness (CWT), whereas physical and mechanical properties were determined using ASTM D143-2019 and ISO 22157-2019. Results showed significant differences in properties based on localities and axial position. Laguna's iron bamboo had 75.29 and 11.87% higher CD and CWT than Baguio's, respectively. Laguna's solid bamboo CD exceeded Nueva Vizcaya's by 38.76%, but Nueva Vizcaya's solid bamboo had a 9.13% higher CWT than Laguna's. Iron bamboo's CD increased by 62.66%, and solid bamboo by 24.41% from bottom to top. Conversely, their CWTs decreased by 47.70 and 55.18%, respectively. Baguio City's iron bamboo exhibited greater relative density (RD), radial (RS), tangential (TS), longitudinal (LS), and volumetric shrinkage (VS) - surpassing Laguna's by 30.50, 42.58, 15.40, 33.96, and 29.31% respectively. However, its moisture content (MC) was 27.04% lower. Meanwhile, Laguna's solid bamboo had an 8.00% higher RD but an 18.46% lower MC compared to Nueva Vizcaya. Notably, solid bamboo from Nueva Vizcaya recorded the highest shrinkage properties. Both bamboo species showed an increasing trend in RD from the bottom to the top but a decreasing trend in MC, RS, TS, and VS. LS was highest in the top portion of iron bamboo and in the bottom portion of solid bamboo. Baguio City and Nueva Vizcaya bamboo exhibited the highest static bending strength than the bamboo from Laguna. In contrast, Laguna's culms showed significantly higher shear (SS) and maximum compression strength (MCS) - 46.09 and 97.09% higher for iron bamboo, and 100 and 123.29% higher for solid bamboo, respectively. The presence of nodes did not significantly affect SS and MCS in either species, but samples without nodes had higher strength than those with nodes. The result indicates that iron and solid bamboo from Laguna is suitable for construction and engineered bamboo applications, whereas bamboo from Baguio City and Nueva Vizcaya is recommended for structural applications that require high strength but not necessarily large culms. The findings highlight the versatility of Philippine-grown iron and solid bamboo as eco-friendly and sustainable raw materials for the bamboo industry in green building practices. To study the influence mechanism of micro-nano oxygenated irrigation (MNOI) on greenhouse fruit cucumber in arid and semi-arid cold regions, the yield and quality of greenhouse fruit cucumber were evaluated and verified based on 2 years of observation data. Taking fruit cucumber in Ningxia solar greenhouse as the research object, three dissolved oxygen (DO) levels of MNOI (DO; 6, 7.5, and 9 mg L−1, O1, O2, and O3, respectively) and non-oxygenated irrigation (CK, 4 mg L−1) were set up as the control treatment. Through comparative design, the influence mechanism of different levels of aerobic irrigation on the yield and quality of greenhouse fruit cucumber was studied. The main indicators of fruit cucumber yield and quality increased with dissolved oxygen in irrigation water from 4 to 9 mg L−1. In spring–summer (autumn–winter), compared with CK, the leaf area index (LAI) and net photosynthetic rate (A) increased by 28.83% (28.77%) and 44.90% (35.00%), respectively, and Vitamin C, soluble protein, soluble sugar, soluble solids and total acid content increased by 100.00% (51.88%), 37.78% (61.11%), 34.17% (54.17%), 37.07% (78.72%) and 26.92% (30.67%) respectively, while nitrate content decreased by 44.88% (51.15%), and dry matter accumulation (DMA), soil respiration rate (SRR), microbial carbon (MC), and microbial nitrogen (MN) increased by 49.81% (127.25%), 55.22% (110.34%), 117.50% (90.91%) and 70.37% (74.42%) respectively, and yield, irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) and soil oxygen content (SO) increased by 22.47% (28.04%), 22.39% (28.05%) and 33.21% (35.33%) respectively. A model of DO in irrigation water and SO was established and the applicability of the model was verified with an average relative error of 2% (less than 5%). MNOI increased SO and soil enzyme activity, enriched soil microorganisms, improved soil microenvironment, promoted water nutrient uptake and growth of root system, increased chlorophyll, photosynthesis and DMA, which improved fruit cucumber yield and quality, and the better DO concentration in irrigation water is 9 mg L−1. The research results provide theoretical support for regulating soil water, fertilizer and air environment, and at the same time, provide feasible ways to improve the quality and efficiency of crops in arid and semi-arid cold regions. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have a key role in natural and agricultural ecosystems affecting plant nutrition, soil biological activity and modifying the availability of nutrients. Thiamine (Vitamin B1) is an essential coenzyme which incorporated in a wide range of plant metabolic processes. Thus, this research aimed to study the possibility of mitigating the negative effect of salinity stress on white lupine plant via using AMF and Vit B1 through assessment growth, various physiological traits and yield components of the white lupine plant. AMF was added to the soil (0.0 and 7 g pot−1) and Vit B1was foliar applied to white lupine seedlings (0.0, 100 and 200 mgL−1) and watered by two levels of salinity (0.0 or 5000 mgL−1). Salinity stress (5000 mgL−1) resulted in significant reductions in growth photosynthetic pigments constituents, endogenous indole acetic acid (IAA), some elements & productivity of white lupine in comparison to control plants. While, increasing phenols, some osmolytes and sodium compared to control (plants irrigated by tap water). Adding AMF to soil with the recommended dose boosted white lupine growth, certain physiological aspects and productivity in white lupine plants under irrigation with saltwater (5000 mgL−1). Furthermore, exogenous Vit B1 treatment with 100 & 200 mgL−1 not only enhanced growth and seeds productivity of white lupine plants under normal irrigation but also, improved salinity tolerance by increasing white lupine growth and productivity via inmproving photosynthetic pigments, osmolytes levels and element contents compared to their corresponding controls. Sustainable use and efficient management of water as an agricultural input have become a major global challenge. Agriculture consumes 70% of global freshwater sources, of which cotton alone is consuming 11%, and thus necessitates for appropriate water and fertilizer savvy strategies such as drip irrigation and fertigation. Drip irrigation has slowly progressed from being a novelty in 1960s to be now an accepted method among farmers. However, documented information on progress of drip fertigation in cotton over the last two decades is little available. In this global review, we have summarized a total of 124 studies not only from developed countries like China, USA but also from developing countries like India, and the Middle East showcasing the adoption and practice of drip fertigation in major cotton growing regions over the last 20 years, besides its role in improving productivity and rational resource use in a sustainable manner. Present findings reveal that drip fertigation could save 20–30% fertilizer and around 50–60% of water besides improving cotton yield. However, despite distinguished advantages, its adoption is limited in most of developing countries with the main impediment being the high initial investment. The area in India alone can be increased 15 folds as compared to present acreage under drip, which can translate into huge saving of water and fertilizer resources. Since, the long-term benefits can help to compensate for the initial cost, farmer friendly policies are required to popularize this technology. While providing quantitative evidence of the significant water and fertilizer savings achieved through drip fertigation, this study could significantly contribute to the existing body of knowledge besides helping to reduce water footprint of cotton across the globe. Summary: Nutrient allocation is central to understanding plant ecological strategies and forest roles in biogeochemical cycles. Thought to be mainly driven by environmental conditions, nutrient allocation to woody organs, especially to living tissues, is poorly understood.To examine the role of differences in living tissues (sapwood, SW, vs inner bark, IB), organs, ecological strategies, and environmental conditions in driving nutrient allocation and scaling in woody plants, we quantified nitrogen and phosphorus in main stems and coarse roots of 45 species from three tropical ecosystems with contrasting precipitation, fire regime, and soil nutrients.Nutrient concentration variation was mostly explained by differences between IB and SW, followed by differences between species and, in the case of phosphorus, soil nutrient availability. IB nutrient concentrations were four times those of SW, with root tissues having slightly higher concentrations than stem tissues. Scaling between IB and SW, and between stems and roots, was generally isometric. In cross‐sections, IB contributed half of total nutrients in roots and a third in stems.Our results highlight the important role of IB and SW for nutrient storage, the coordination in nutrient allocation across tissues and organs, and the need to differentiate between IB and SW to understand plant nutrient allocation. To study the characteristics of bacterial community structure in high-yield and low-yield moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) forests, we collected bamboo rhizome, rhizome root, stem, leaf, rhizosphere soil, and non-rhizosphere soil from high- and low-yield forests in Yong'an City and Jiangle County of Fujian Province, China. The genomic DNA of the samples was extracted, sequenced and analyzed. The results show that: the common differences between the high-yield and low-yield P. edulis forest samples in the two regions were mainly in bacterial community compositions in the bamboo rhizome, rhizome root, and soil samples. Differences in the bacterial community compositions in the stem and leaf samples were insignificant. The bacterial species and diversity in rhizome root and rhizosphere soil of high-yield P. edulis forests were less than those of low-yield forests. The relative abundance of Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria in rhizome root samples of high-yield forests was higher than that in low-yield forests. The relative abundance of Rhizobiales and Burkholderiales in bamboo rhizome samples in high-yield forests was higher than that in low-yield forests. The relative abundance of Bradyrhizobium in bamboo rhizome samples in high-yield forests was higher than that in low-yield forests in the two regions. The change of bacterial community composition in P. edulis stems and leaves showed little correlation with high- or low-yields of P. edulis forests. Notably, the bacterial community composition of the rhizome root system was correlated with the high yield of bamboo. Background: This paper examines the factors that led to the collapse of hemp grown for cannabidiol (CBD) in Arizona, the United States of America (USA), and particularly in Yuma County, which is a well-established agricultural area in the state. Methods: This research uses a combination of mapping analysis along with a survey of hemp farmers to assess the reasons why the hemp industry collapsed as well as to foster solutions to these problems. Results: In 2019, 5430 acres were sown with hemp seed in Arizona with 3890 acres inspected by the state to determine if they could be harvested. By 2021, there were only 156 acres planted, and only 128 of those acres were inspected by the state for compliance. (Crop mortality accounts for the difference between acres sown and acres inspected.) Conclusions: A lack of knowledge about the hemp life cycle greatly contributed to the failure of high CBD hemp crops in Arizona. Other problems included noncompliance with tetrahydrocannabinol limits, poor sources for seeds and inconsistent genetics of the hemp varieties sold to farmers, and diseases that hemp plants were susceptible to such as Pythium crown and root rot and beet curly top virus. Addressing these factors will go far in making hemp a profitable and widespread crop in Arizona. Additionally, hemp grown for other traditional uses (e.g., fiber or seed oil) as well as new applications (e.g., microgreens, hempcrete, and phytoremediation) offers other pathways for successful hemp agriculture in this state. Biodegradation of livestock processing waste is one of the more cost-effective, ecologically safe recycling methods that may preserve nutritional content and key amino acids useful in animal feed production. Here, we determined the biodegrading potentials of nonconventional feedstuffs using a combination of bacteria (Bacillus subtilis) and fungi (Fusarium sp.). Five nonconventional feed types (feather meal, hair waste, egg membranes, horn hoof and horn) were selected and replicated in a 10 L plastic biocomposter for 7 weeks and observed for degradation by measuring changes in total organic carbon, temperature, phosphorus, potassium, pH, microbial counts and rate of degradation. Bacteria and fungi were inoculated inside the substrate after isolation and incubation. The effects of physicochemical and microbial counts were assessed. The biodegradability and optimal activity were observed. From the results, physico-parameters measured during the 7 weeks showed significant differences (P <0.05) between substrates. The highest rate of decomposition, temperature, pH levels, total organic carbon, and total bacteria counts were recorded in feather meal, egg membrane, and hair waste. The weekly study showed that feather meal (68.79%, decompose faster than cow hoof (18.72%) egg membrane (60.89%) hair waste (62.82%) and cow horn (32.31%) during bio-composting. Decomposition processes and mineralization are essential to determine the time to deploy and manage species in consortia or rotations. The aim of this article was study the dynamics of biomass decomposition and release of macro-nutrients of plant residues of Fabacea. The species used were: jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis), pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan), dwarf mucuna (Mucuna deeringiana) and sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea). The experiment was conducted in the field in a randomized block design, 4 x 5 factorial, four species of green manure and five times (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 days). In the results, sunn hemp and pigeon pea had lower decomposition and release of C, N, K, and Mg. All species, K and P showed similar half-lives (t1/2). For N, sunn hemp presented the lowest coefficient of mineralization (k), 0.0040 g g-1 dia-1, associated with highest t1/2 (173.3 days), already, jack bean showed the highest k (0.0122 g g-1 dia-1) associated with the lowest t1/2 (56.8 days). In edaphoclimatic conditions, use of the jack bean and the dwarf mucuna is recommended for supply of nutrients in shorter periods of time for subsequent crops. Nepalese community forests are globally recognized for sustainable forest management and improving the livelihoods of forest-dependent communities, but their contribution to carbon sequestration in trees and soil is rarely studied. This study was performed to understand the effect of management practices on carbon stock of two community forests (CFs) - Taldanda (managed) and Dangdunge (unmanaged) - dominated by Sal (Shorea robusta) in the mid-hills of Nepal. Twenty-one concentric sample plots, each of 250 m2, were laid out in each forest to estimate different carbon pools and a stratified random sampling intensity of 0.5% used to collect data. Results showed significant (p<0.05) differences in above and below-ground biomass and carbon sequestration potential between the two CFs. The managed and unmanaged forests had total carbon stock of 269.3±27.4 and 150.0±22.7 ton/ha, respectively, demonstrating 1.79 times higher carbon stock in the former than the latter. The managed forest had significantly (p<0.05) greater mean soil organic carbon (SOC) stock than the unmanaged forest. The SOC was highest in the upper soil layer (0-10 cm), with a steady decrease as the soil depth increased. All other measured carbon pools values were higher in managed compared to unmanaged forest. The difference in carbon stock was due to the manipulation of different forest management activities, including thinning, timber extraction, fire control, grazing, and fuel wood/fodder extraction. Flowering is a crucial phase for angiosperms to continue their species propagation and is highly regulated. In the current review, flowering in sugarcane and the associated mechanisms are elaborately presented. In sugarcane, flowering has two effects, wherein it is a beneficial factor from the breeder's perspective and crucial for crop improvement, but commercially, it depletes the sucrose reserves from the stalks; hence, less value is assigned. Different species of Saccharum genus are spread across geographical latitudes, thereby proving their ability to grow in multiple inductive daylengths of different locations according in the habituated zone. In general, sugarcane is termed an intermediate daylength plant with quantitative short-day behaviour as it requires reduction in daylength from 12 h 55 min to 12 h or 12 h 30 min. The prime concern in sugarcane flowering is its erratic flowering nature. The transition to reproductive stage which reverts to vegetative stage if there is any deviation from ambient temperature and light is also an issue. Spatial and temporal gene expression patterns during vegetative to reproductive stage transition and after reverting to vegetative state could possibly reveal how the genetic circuits are being governed. This review will also shed a light on potential roles of genes and/or miRNAs in flowering in sugarcane. Knowledge of transcriptomic background of circadian, photoperiod, and gibberellin pathways in sugarcane will enable us to better understand of variable response in floral development. Potato cyst nematodes (PCNs), golden (yellow) cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis, gPCN) and pale (white) cyst nematode (G. pallida, pPCN), are important invasive pests in many countries and regions where they can cause significant yield and economic loss for agriculture. Prediction and identification of habitats suitable for PCNs are critical for developing biosecurity strategies, both pre and post border, to maximise the potential for early elimination should an incursion occur. To date, the potential global distribution of PCNs has not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, this study conducted a species distribution model to illustrate the potential global distribution of PCNs and risk regions. In this study, the Maximum Entropy Model (Maxent) associated with the Geographic Information System (GIS) was employed to reveal the potential distribution of the gPCN and pPCN. In addition to bioclimate, soil quality was also included in the model. The global cultivated lands, whether the susceptible hosts were present or not, were used to assess the maximum potential risk regions. The limitation factors for PCNs distribution were also assessed. Results showed that 66% of the global land surface was suitable for gPCN or pPCN or both, and both species can colonise more than 75% of the global cultivated lands. The coldest quarter's mean temperature and precipitation were critical limitations in unsuitable regions. In summary, the global risk maps of PCNs contribute valuable additional information that complements previous national/regional distribution predictions. The results of this distribution research will contribute practical support for decision-makers and practitioners to implement biosecurity strategies from a global perspective, that incorporate prevention or promptly enforce control practices to limit the damage caused by future incursions. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of palygorskite and probiotics complex (Pal–Pro) supplementation on laying performance, the microflora structure and biodiversity of Xuefeng black-bone chicken. A total of 432 Xuefeng black-bone chickens were randomly assigned into 4 groups with 6 replicates of 18 hens. The control group (group A) was fed the basal diet, and the experimental groups (groups B, C and D) were fed basal diet supplemented with 250, 500 and 750 mg/kg Pal–Pro for 8 weeks. The results were as follows: (1) The Pal–Pro supplementation linearly increased (p <.05) laying rate, and linearly decreased the feed conversion ratio (p <.05). (2) At the phylum level, compared with the group A, the abundance of Bacteroidetes was increased (p <.05) and the abundance of Proteobacteria was decreased (p <.05) in group D, and the abundance of Fusobacteria was increased in group C (p <.05). (3) At the genus level, the abundance of Bacteroides, Lachnospiraceae_unclassified and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 of group D were higher (p <.05) than those in group A, the abundance of CHKCI001 of group B was higher than that in group A, and compared with group A, the abundance of Fusobacterium was increased (p <.05) and the abundance of Pseudomonas was decreased in groups C and D (p <.05). (4）The Spearman correlation analysis showed that Aeriscardovia was negatively correlated with laying rate (p <.01), and Enterococcus and Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014 were positively correlated with egg weight (p <.05). In conclusion, dietary Pal–Pro may improve laying performance by adjusting the flora structure. The recommended dosage is 750 mg/kg. Dietary supplementation of Pal–Pro improved the laying performance of Xuefeng black-bone chicken. Dietary supplementation of Pal–Pro could alter the faecal microbial community of Xuefeng black-bone chicken. The assessment of aluminosilicates' impact on the production of chickens, the physical features of the intestines, and leg bones was done. 500 Ross 308 chickens were used and divided into 5 groups. The control group was I. Groups II, III, IV, and V were fed with halloysite and zeolite (1:3 ratio) at 0,5% (1–35 days; starter, grower 1 and 2) and 1% (36–42 days; finisher) levels. Aluminosilicates were also used for the peat litter: II—500 g of halloysite/m2; III—250 g of halloysite/m2 and 250 g of zeolite/m2; IV—500 g of zeolite/m2; V—130 g halloysite/m2, 370 g zeolite/m2. During 42 days, growth and feed indicators were recorded. 10 birds from each group were selected for slaughter. The digestive tract, femur, and tibia bones were sampled, and physical features were analyzed (weight, length, and strength). A lower feed conversion ratio on days 23–35 was found in the groups with the aluminosilicates addition. In group V a lower weight of the gizzard was found than in group I. A liver weight was higher in group V than in group III. A higher strength of the femurs was demonstrated in group IV. The tibia bones were characterized by higher strength than the femurs of broiler chickens. The aluminosilicates to feed and litter had no adverse effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil microbial communities are crucial for plant growth and are already depleted by anthropogenic activities. The application of microbial transplants provides a strategy to restore beneficial soil traits, but less is known about the microbiota of traditional inoculants used in biodynamic agriculture. In this study, we used amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR to decipher microbial communities of composts, biodynamic manures, and plant preparations from Austria and France. In addition, we investigated the effect of extracts derived from biodynamic manure and compost on the rhizosphere microbiome of apple trees. Microbiota abundance, composition, and diversity of biodynamic manures, plant preparations, and composts were distinct. Microbial abundances ranged between 1010-1011 (bacterial 16S rRNA genes) and 109-1011 (fungal ITS genes). The bacterial diversity was significantly higher in biodynamic manures compared to compost without discernible differences in abundance. Fungal diversity was not significantly different while abundance was increased in biodynamic manures. The microbial communities of biodynamic manures and plant preparations were specific for each production site, but all contain potentially plant-beneficial bacterial genera. When applied in apple orchards, biodynamic preparations (extracts) had the non-significant effect of reducing bacterial and fungal abundance in apple rhizosphere (4 months post-application), while increasing fungal and lowering bacterial Shannon diversity. One to four months after inoculation, individual taxa indicated differential abundance. We observed the reduction of the pathogenic fungus Alternaria, and the enrichment of potentially beneficial bacterial genera such as Pseudomonas. Our study paves way for the science-based adaptation of empirically developed biodynamic formulations under different farming practices to restore the vitality of agricultural soils. Background: Soil salinization and alkalization are widespread environmental problems that limit grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) growth and yield. However, little is known about the response of grapevine to alkali stress. This study investigated the differences in physiological characteristics, chloroplast structure, transcriptome, and metabolome in grapevine plants under salt stress and alkali stress. Results: We found that grapevine plants under salt stress and alkali stress showed leaf chlorosis, a decline in photosynthetic capacity, a decrease in chlorophyll content and Rubisco activity, an imbalance of Na+ and K+, and damaged chloroplast ultrastructure. Fv/Fm decreased under salt stress and alkali stress. NPQ increased under salt stress whereas decreased under alkali stress. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment showed the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) induced by salt stress and alkali stress were involved in different biological processes and have varied molecular functions. The expression of stress genes involved in the ABA and MAPK signaling pathways was markedly altered by salt stress and alkali stress. The genes encoding ion transporter (AKT1, HKT1, NHX1, NHX2, TPC1A, TPC1B) were up-regulated under salt stress and alkali stress. Down-regulation in the expression of numerous genes in the ‘Porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism’, ‘Photosynthesis-antenna proteins’, and ‘Photosynthesis’ pathways were observed under alkali stress. Many genes in the ‘Carbon fixation in photosynthetic organisms’ pathway in salt stress and alkali stress were down-regulated. Metabolome showed that 431 and 378 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were identified in salt stress and alkali stress, respectively. L-Glutamic acid and 5-Aminolevulinate involved in chlorophyll synthesis decreased under salt stress and alkali stress. The abundance of 19 DAMs under salt stress related to photosynthesis decreased. The abundance of 16 organic acids in salt stress and 22 in alkali stress increased respectively. Conclusions: Our findings suggested that alkali stress had more adverse effects on grapevine leaves, chloroplast structure, ion balance, and photosynthesis than salt stress. Transcriptional and metabolic profiling showed that there were significant differences in the effects of salt stress and alkali stress on the expression of key genes and the abundance of pivotal metabolites in grapevine plants. The control of infectious diseases has always been a top medical priority. For years during the so-called antibiotic era, we enjoyed prolonged life expectancy and the benefits of superior pathogen control. The devastating failure of the medical system, agriculture and pharmaceutical companies and the general population to appreciate and safeguard these benefits is now leading us into a grim post-antibiotic era. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) refers to microorganisms becoming resistant to antibiotics that were designed and expected to kill them. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, AMR was recognised by the World Health Organization as the central priority area with growing public awareness of the threat AMR now presents. The Review on Antimicrobial Resistance, a project commissioned by the UK government, predicted that the death toll of AMR could be one person every 3 seconds, amounting to 10 million deaths per year by 2050. This review aims to raise awareness of the evergrowing extensiveness of antimicrobial resistance and identify major sources of this adversity, focusing on agriculture's role in this problem and its solutions. Feeding 10 billion people sustainably by 2050 in the era of slow genetic progress has spurred urgent calls to bring more crops per unit time. Over the last century, crop physiologists and breeders have been trying to alter plant biology to investigate and intervene in developmental processes under controlled chambers. Accelerating the breeding cycle via "speed breeding" was the outcome of these experiments. Speed breeding accelerates the genetic gain via phenome and genome-assisted trait introgression, re-domestication, and plant variety registration. Furthermore, early varietal release through speed breeding offers incremental benefits over conventional methods. However, a lack of resources and species-specific protocols encumber the technological implementation, which can be alleviated by reallocating funds to establish speed breeding units. This review discusses the limitations of conventional breeding methods and various alternative strategies to accelerate the breeding process. It also discusses the intervention at various developmental stages to reduce the generation time and global impacts of speed breeding protocols developed so far. Low-cost, field-based speed breeding protocol developed by Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab, India to harvest at least three generations of wheat in a year without demanding the expensive greenhouses or growth chambers is also discussed. Summary: Associational resistance to herbivore and pathogen attack is a well documented ecological phenomenon and, if applied to agriculture, may reduce impact of pests and diseases on crop yields without recourse to pesticides.The value of associational resistance through intercropping, planting multiple crops alongside each other, as a sustainable control method remains unclear, due to variable outcomes reported in the published literature. We performed a meta‐analysis to provide a quantitative assessment of benefits of intercropping for target plant resistance to plant‐parasitic nematodes and soil‐borne diseases.We found that intercropping reduced damage to focal crops from nematodes by 40% and disease incidence by 55%. Intercropping efficacy varied with biological variables, such as field fertilisation status and intercrop family, and methodology, including whether study samples were potted or in fields.Nematode control using intercropping was sufficient to offset reductions in focal crop yield from intercrop presence, making intercropping a viable agricultural tool. We identify key drivers for underpinning the success of intercropping and indicate areas for future research to improve efficacy. Nitrogen is an essential core element in walnut seedling growth and development. However, nitrogen starvation and excessive nitrogen stress can cause stunted growth and development of walnut seedlings, and environmental pollution is also of concern. Therefore, it is necessary to study the mechanism of walnut seedling resistance to nitrogen stress. In this study, morphological and physiological observations and transcriptome sequencing of walnut seedlings under nitrogen starvation and excess nitrogen stress were performed. The results showed that walnut seedlings under nitrogen starvation and excess stress could adapt to the changes in the nitrogen environment by changing the coordination of their root morphology and physiological indexes. Based on an analysis of transcriptome data, 4911 differential genes (DEGs) were obtained (2180 were upregulated and 2731 were downregulated) in a comparison of nitrogen starvation and control groups. A total of 9497 DEGs (5091 upregulated and 4406 downregulated) were obtained in the comparison between the nitrogen overdose and control groups. When these DEGs were analysed, the differential genes in both groups were found to be significantly enriched in the plant's circadian pathway. Therefore, we selected the circadian rhythm as the focus for further analysis. We made some discoveries by analysing the gene co-expression network of nitrogen metabolism, circadian rhythm, and hormone signal transduction. (a) Nitrite nitrogen (NO2−) or Glu may act as a nitrogen signal to the circadian clock. (b) Nitrogen signalling may be input into the circadian clock by regulating changes in the abundance of the CRY1 gene. (c) After the nitrogen signal enters the circadian clock, the expression of the LHY gene is upregulated, which causes a phase shift in the circadian clock. (d) The RVE protein may send information about the circadian clock's response to nitrogen stress back to the nitrogen metabolic pathway via the hormone transduction pathway. In conclusion, various metabolic pathways in the roots of walnut seedlings coordinated with one another to resist the ill effects of nitrogen stress on the root cells, and these coordination relationships were regulated by the circadian clock. Background: Viruses are the major threat to commercial potato (Solanum tuberosum) production worldwide. Because viral genomes only encode a small number of proteins, all stages of viral infection rely on interactions between viral proteins and host factors. Previously, we presented a list of the most important candidate genes involved in potato plants' defense response to viruses that are significantly activated in resistant cultivars. Isolated from this list, Aspartic Protease Inhibitor 5 (API5) is a critical host regulatory component of plant defense responses against pathogens. The purpose of this study is to determine the role of StAPI5 in defense of potato against potato virus Y and potato virus A, as well as its ability to confer virus resistance in a transgenic susceptible cultivar of potato (Desiree). Potato plants were transformed with Agrobacterium tumefaciens via a construct encoding the potato StAPI5 gene under the control of the Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter. Results: Transgenic plants overexpressing StAPI5 exhibited comparable virus resistance to non-transgenic control plants, indicating that StAPI5 functions in gene regulation during virus resistance. The endogenous StAPI5 and CaMV 35S promoter regions shared nine transcription factor binding sites. Additionally, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductivity, and maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem II were significantly higher in virus-infected transgenic plants than in wild-type plants. Conclusion: Overall, these findings indicate that StAPI5 may be a viable candidate gene for engineering plant disease resistance to viruses that inhibit disease development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil erosion is a global problem affecting both developed and developing countries. In the Philippines, it is considered one of the worst environmental issues. Marinduque is an island province in the Philippines that is identified belonging to areas with a high proportion of soil erosion due to its topography that is highly dominated by rolling to moderately steep terrain. Using publicly available data on soil, rainfall, elevation, and land cover, this study maps soil erosion risk in the province of Marinduque, Philippines using RUSLE. Based on results, more than half of Marinduque were classified as areas with high to very severe soil erosion rates. Panicle blast is the most severe type of rice blast disease. Screening of rice genotypes for panicle blast resistance at the field level requires an efficient and robust method of inoculation. Here, we standardized a method that can be utilized for both small- and large-scale screening and assessment of panicle blast infection and disease reaction. The method involves inoculation of Magnaporthe oryzae spore culture in the neck of the rice panicle using a syringe and covering the inoculation site with wet cotton wrapped with aluminum foil to provide the required humidity for spore germination. The method was standardized using panicle blast-resistant cv. Tetep and susceptible cv. HP2216 inoculated with Mo-ni-025 isolate of M. oryzae. The method was evaluated at phenotypic as well as molecular level by expression analysis of disease responsive pathogenesis-related (PR) genes. We found this method simple, robust, reliable, and highly efficient for screening of large germplasm sets of rice for panicle blast. This was validated by screening the wild rice germplasm for panicle blast response in the field using three M. oryzae strains and subsequently with the most virulent strain in 45 EMS-induced mutants of Nagina 22 shortlisted based on field screening in a blast hotspot region. We identified five novel blast disease-resistant wild rice genotypes and 15 Nagina 22 mutants that can be used in breeding programmes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The climate in the Altai Mountains is determined by two major climate systems whose dominance has varied over time, leading to significant spatio-temporal changes in temperature and precipitation during the Holocene. This study aimed at the reconstruction of the local to regional moisture and temperature conditions in an alpine belt of the southern Mongolian Altai during the Late Holocene. It thereby contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the region's palaeoclimate in the Holocene. Our reconstruction is based on palynological and sediment analyses as well as radiometric age determinations of samples from a 130 cm exposed soil/sediment profile within the alpine belt. Largely supported by sedimentological and geochemical observations, the pollen assemblages indicate a warm and dry period between about 2600 and 2250 cal a BP, a subsequent cold and humid phase extending to about 130 cal a BP, and a return to warm and dry conditions lasting to present. Our data support the results of recent studies on the regional climate variability and the observation of significant differences in the mode of climate changes and its temporal sequence within the Altai Mountains. Although the pollen assemblages in the profile reflected a continuous anthropo-zoogenic influence on the study site's vegetation climatic signals were clearly detectable, underlining the indicator value of the pollen data from the Alpine sediments for regional palaeoclimatic reconstruction. The breeding of hybrid cultivars of hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) is not well described, especially the segregation and inheritance of traits that are important for yield. A total of 23 families were produced from genetically diverse parents to investigate the inheritance of morphological traits and their association with biomass accumulation and cannabinoid yield. In addition, a novel classification method for canopy architecture was developed. The strong linear relationship between wet and dry biomass provided an accurate estimate of final dry stripped floral biomass. Of all field and aerial measurements, basal stem diameter was determined to be the single best selection criterion for final dry stripped floral biomass yield. Along with stem diameter, canopy architecture and stem growth predictors described the majority of the explainable variation of biomass yield. Within-family variance for morphological and cannabinoid measurements reflected the heterozygosity of the parents. While selfed populations suffered from inbreeding depression, hybrid development in hemp will require at least one inbred parent to achieve uniform growth and biomass yield. Nevertheless, floral phenology remains a confounding factor in selection because of its underlying influence on biomass production, highlighting the need to understand the genetic basis for flowering time in the breeding of uniform cultivars. Summary: Most research in plant chronobiology has been done in laboratory conditions. However, laboratories usually fail to mimic natural conditions and their slight fluctuations, highlighting or obfuscating rhythmicity. High‐density crops, such as sugarcane (Saccharum hybrid), generate field microenvironments with specific light and temperature regimes resulting from mutual shading.We measured the metabolic and transcriptional rhythms in the leaves of 4‐month‐old (4 mo) and 9 mo field‐grown sugarcane. Most of the assayed rhythms in 9 mo sugarcane peaked >1 h later than in 4 mo sugarcane, including rhythms of the circadian clock gene, LATE ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL (LHY).We hypothesized that older sugarcane perceives dawn later than younger sugarcane as a consequence of self‐shading. As a test, we measured LHY rhythms in plants on the east and the west sides of a field. We also tested if a wooden wall built between lines of sugarcane plants changed their rhythms. The LHY peak was delayed in the plants in the west of the field or beyond the wall; both shaded at dawn.We conclude that plants in the same field may have different phases resulting from field microenvironments, impacting important agronomical traits, such as flowering time, stalk weight and number. Growing food in a city is quite challenging but possible around the globe. Urban farming practices require specific knowledge depending on the location and the limitation of the land or space availability in a city. Under tropical climate conditions, even though the growing season is extensive, there are investment and business models on greenhouse urban farming within a city boundary. This paper highlights the greenhouse urban farm location and focuses on the commercial perspective of producing crops in Bangkok Metro Region (BMR). The paper focuses on reviewing and analysing greenhouse urban farm opportunities and challenges. There are two objectives of the study to understand landscape patterns and analyse the challenges and opportunities of greenhouse farming within BMR: 1) understand the landscape pattern of greenhouse farming with BMR and 2) analyse the challenges and opportunities of urban farming in BMR. The results are discussed with respect to specific topics including greenhouse urban farming location and operation, greenhouse design, and marketing analysis. There are 54 greenhouse urban farms located within the BMR boundary; 20 of these farms share their business opportunities and constraints of farming in the city. This finding shows that the location of the farms is no longer a constraint of urban farming, as all the greenhouse urban farmers can use social media to promote their farms and products. The most important advantage is that not only are the urban farm greenhouses involved with an extensive farming season, but the local city farms can also set the selling price of their produces higher than the standard price.
