Radial artery access has experienced increasing adoption and rapid expansion of indications for neurointerventional procedures. This access is an attractive neurointervention route to be considered, with many advantages over the traditional femoral access in terms of ease of vasculature navigation and decreased risk of complications such as significant bleeding. Although a promising technique for neurointerventional procedures, there are inherent and unique considerations as well as potential complications involved. The following case report highlights some of these vital concepts associated with radial artery access, including appropriate patient selection as well as assessment of arterial size in the context of neurointerventional techniques. Early identification of complications such as arterial injury and compartment syndrome, with an emphasis on appropriate draping and inter-procedure monitoring, is discussed as well as approaches for subsequent management. Finally, the issue of radiation safety in this emerging technique is considered. These concepts are critical for the successful use and the continued growth of radial artery access for neurointervention procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Gulf of Mexico is a hydrocarbon-rich region characterized by the presence of floating oil slicks from persistent natural hydrocarbon seeps, which are reliably captured by synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite imaging. Improving the state of knowledge of hydrocarbon seepage in the Gulf of Mexico improves the understanding and quantification of natural seepage rates in North America. We used data derived from SAR scenes collected over the Gulf of Mexico from 1978 to 2018 to locate oil slick origins (OSOs), cluster the OSOs into discrete seep zones, estimate the flux of individual seepage events, and calculate seep recurrence rates. In total, 1618 discrete seep zones were identified, primarily concentrated in the northern Gulf of Mexico within the Louann salt formation, with a secondary concentration in the Campeche region. The centerline method was used to estimate flux based on the drift length of the slick (centerline), the slick area, and average current and wind speeds. Flux estimates from the surface area of oil slicks varied geographically and temporally; on average, seep zones exhibited an 11% recurrence rate, suggesting possible intermittent discharge from natural seeps. The estimated average instantaneous flux for natural seeps is 9.8 mL s−1 (1.9 × 103 bbl yr−1), with an annual discharge of 1.73–6.69 × 105 bbl yr−1 (2.75–10.63 × 104 m3 yr−1) for the entire Gulf of Mexico. The temporal variability of average flux suggests a potential decrease following 1995; however, analysis of flux in four lease blocks indicates that flux has not changed substantially over time. It is unlikely that production activities in the Gulf of Mexico impact natural seepage on a human timescale. Of the 1618 identified seep zones, 1401 are located within U.S. waters, with 70 identified as having flux and recurrence rates significantly higher than the average. Seep zones exhibiting high recurrence rates are more likely to be associated with positive seismic anomalies. Many of the methods developed for this study can be applied to SAR-detected oil slicks in other marine settings to better assess the magnitude of global hydrocarbon seepage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) is part of first-line intervention for acute ischemic stroke management. Recent technological advances have demonstrated that large-bore catheters are an attractive approach for EVT. A multitude of approaches such as A Direct Aspiration first Pass Technique (ADAPT) or in conjunction with stent retrieval (Solumbra technique) have been developed with increasingly large-bore catheters, demonstrating safety and efficacy. Furthermore, these techniques have demonstrated promise for the intervention of cerebral venous thrombosis as well as posterior circulation ischemic events. Recently, advances in neurointerventional catheters have focused on improved maneuverability to navigate the neurovasculature, as well as larger inner diameters for improved procedural versatility, including aspiration. We describe a case report highlighting our early institutional experience with the recently developed large-bore catheter, the BENCHMARK™ BMX™ 96. The case report entails near complete occlusion of the internal carotid artery from acute thrombus and the utility of the BMX™ 96 catheter for treatment of such extensive clot burden. The applicability of large-bore aspiration catheters, with an emphasis on recent advances, for mechanical thrombectomy in arterial as well as venous systems is discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of use of the BENCHMARK™ BMX™ 96 access system for EVT in acute ischemic stroke. Such new-generation large-bore catheters are a promising advance in neurointervention, and our early institution experience highlights the ease of use and versatility for neurointerventional procedures such as EVT. Samples of thermogenic hydrocarbon gases, from vents and gas hydrate mounds within a sea-floor chemosynthetic community on the Gulf of Mexico continental slope at about 540 m depth, were collected by research submersible. Our study area is characterized by low water temperature (mean = 7 [degrees] C), high pressure (about 5400 kPa), and abundant structure H gas hydrate. Bacterial oxidation of hydrate-bound methane (C[H.sub.4]) is indicated by three isotopic properties of gas hydrate samples. Relative to the vent gas from which the gas hydrate formed, (1) methane-bound methane is enriched in 13C by as much as 3.8 [per thousand] PDB (Peedee belemnite), (2) hydrate-bound methane is enriched in deuterium (D) by as much as 37 [per thousand] SMOW (standard mean ocean water), and (3) hydrate-bound carbon dioxide (C[O.sub.2]) is depleted in 13C by as much as 22.4 [per thousand] PDB. Hydrate-associated authigenic carbonate rock is also depleted in 13C. Bacterial oxidation of methane is a driving force in chemosynthetic communities, and in the concomitant precipitation of authigenic carbonate rock that modifies sea-floor geology. Bacterial oxidation of hydrate-bound methane expands the potential boundaries of life in extreme environments.

In this paper we document instances where change in the magnitude of natural oil seepage coincided with fluctuations of fluid temperature in a seafloor mud volcano. Oil slicks were detected floating near commercial oil fields in the northern Gulf of Mexico in a time series of six satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images collected over a 10 month interval. The oil escaped naturally from a complex of fluid expulsion features at seafloor depths of about 600 m. One of these features was a 50-m-wide, mud- and brine-filled crater. Temperature in the crater fluctuated rapidly during an interval of ~1 yr (minimum 6.1 [degrees] C, maximum 48.3 [degrees] C, mean 26.1 [degrees] C, standard deviation 9.07). The areas of the oil slicks in the SAR images fluctuated repeatedly between [is less than] 10 and [is greater than] 1000 ha. The largest oil slicks detected by SAR occurred along with the fastest increase in fluid temperature. Keywords: hydrocarbon seep, eruption, fluid migration, diatreme, Gulf of Mexico.

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) hydrolyze the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and, thereby, function as coregulators of cholinergic neurotransmission. Although closely related, these enzymes display very different substrate specificities that only partially overlap. This disparity is largely due to differences in the number of aromatic residues lining the active site gorge, which leads to large differences in the shape of the gorge and potentially to distinct interactions with an individual ligand. Considerable structural information is available for the binding of a wide diversity of ligands to AChE. In contrast, structural data on the binding of reversible ligands to BChE are lacking. In a recent effort, an inhibitor competition approach was used to probe the overlap of ligand binding sites in BChE. Here, we extend this study by solving the crystal structures of human BChE in complex with five reversible ligands, namely, decamethonium, thioflavin T, propidium, huprine, and ethopropazine. We compare these structures to equivalent AChE complexes when available in the protein data bank and supplement this comparison with kinetic data and observations from isothermal titration calorimetry. This new information now allows us to define the bindingmode of various ligand families and will be of importance in designing specific reversible ligands of BChE that behave as inhibitors or reactivators.
