While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. By leveraging a remarkably old technology, plot networks are sparking a very modern revolution in tropical forest science. In the future, humanity can benefit greatly by nurturing the grassroots communities now collectively capable of generating unique, long-term understanding of Earth's most precious forests. Resumen: Los bosques tropicales son los ecosistemas más diversos y productivos del mundo y entender su funcionamiento es crítico para nuestro futuro colectivo. Sin embargo, hasta hace muy poco, los esfuerzos para medirlos y monitorearlos han estado muy desconectados. Esta duradoura colaboração pantropical revelou um grande sumidouro de carbono persistente e suas tendências, assim como tem evidenciado quais direcionadores são mais importantes, quais processos florestais são mais afetados, onde eles estão mudando, seus atrasos no tempo de resposta, e as prováveis respostas das florestas tropicais conforme o clima continua a mudar. Dessa forma, aproveitando uma notável tecnologia antiga, redes de parcelas acendem faíscas de uma moderna revolução na ciência das florestas tropicais. No futuro a humanidade pode se beneficiar incentivando estas comunidades basais que agora são coletivamente capazes de gerar conhecimentos únicos e duradouros sobre as florestas mais preciosas da Terra. Résume: Les forêts tropicales sont les écosystèmes les plus diversifiés et les plus productifs de la planète. Si une meilleure compréhension de ces forêts est essentielle pour notre avenir collectif, jusqu'à tout récemment, les efforts déployés pour les mesurer et les surveiller ont été largement déconnectés. La mise en réseau est essentielle pour découvrir les réponses à des questions qui dépassent les frontières et les horizons des organismes de financement. Nous montrons ici comment une communauté mondiale relève les défis de la recherche sur les écosystèmes tropicaux avec diverses équipes qui mesurent les forêts arbre après arbre dans de milliers de parcelles permanentes. Nous passons en revue les principales découvertes scientifiques de ces travaux et montrons comment ce processus modifie la science des forêts tropicales. Notre approche principale consiste à relier les initiatives de base à long terme à des protocoles standardisés et une gestion de données afin de générer des résultats solides à grande échelle. En reliant les chercheurs tropicaux et en élevant leur statut, notre modèle de réseau de recherche sociale reconnaît le rôle clé de l'auteur des données dans la découverte scientifique. Conçus en 1999 avec RAINFOR (Amérique du Sud), nos réseaux de parcelles permanentes ont été adaptés à l'Afrique (AfriTRON) et à l'Asie du Sud-Est (T-FORCES) et largement imités dans le monde entier. Ces multiples initiatives sont désormais intégrées via l'infrastructure ForestPlots.net, qui relie des collègues de 54 pays à travers 24 réseaux de parcelles. Ensemble, elles transforment la compréhension des forêts tropicales et de leur rôle biosphérique. Ensemble, nous avons découvert comment, où et pourquoi le carbone forestier et la biodiversité réagissent au changement climatique, et comment ils y réagissent. Abstrak: Hutan tropika adalah di antara ekosistem yang paling produktif dan mempunyai kepelbagaian biodiversiti yang tinggi di seluruh dunia. Walaupun pemahaman mengenai hutan tropika amat penting untuk masa depan kita, usaha-usaha untuk mengkaji dan mengawas hutah-hutan tersebut baru sekarang menjadi lebih diperhubungkan. Perangkaian adalah sangat penting untuk mencari jawapan kepada soalan-soalan yang menjangkaui sempadan dan batasan agensi pendanaan. - Abstract
Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. This long-term pan-tropical collaboration has revealed a large long-term carbon sink and its trends, as well as making clear which drivers are most important, which forest processes are affected, where they are changing, what the lags are, and the likely future responses of tropical forests as the climate continues to change. Plastic production has been increasing exponentially in the last 60 years, but plastic disposal is out of control, resulting in the pollution of all ecosystems on Earth. Finding alternative environmentally sustainable choices, such as biodegradation by insects and their associated gut microbiota, is crucial, however we have only begun to characterize these ecosystems. Some bacteria and one fungus have been previously identified in the gut of Greater Wax Moth larvae (Galleria mellonella L., Lepidoptera, Pyralidae) located mainly in the Northern hemisphere. The aim of this study was to describe changes in the gut microbiota associated with the consumption of polyethylene and polystyrene by the Greater Wax Moth in Argentina, considering both bacteria and fungi. Larvae were fed polyethylene, polystyrene and beeswax as control for 7 days. Next generation sequencing revealed changes in the bacterial gut microbiome of the wax moth larvae at the phyla and genus levels, with an increase in two Pseudomonas strains. The fungal communities showed no differences in composition between diets, only changing in relative abundance. This is the first report of both bacterial and fungal communities associated with a plastivore insect. The results are promising and call for more studies concerning a potential multi-kingdom synergy in the plastic biodegradation process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What is first: dengue fever or the unfavorable socio-environmental conditions that promote the existence of the mosquito Aedes aegypti? The answer from an integrative vision is “both, and in a synergic manner”. It will be difficult to control dengue, a viral disease transmitted by Ae. aegypti, if we do not improve these conditions. In the Great San Miguel de Tucumán the dengue outbreak is favored by different conditions derived from human activity. - Abstract
Our knowledge about the structure and function of Andean forests at regional scales remains limited. Current initiatives to study forests over continental or global scales still have important geographical gaps, particularly in regions such as the tropical and subtropical Andes. In this study, we assessed patterns of structure and tree species diversity along ~ 4000 km of latitude and ~ 4000 m of elevation range in Andean forests. We used the Andean Forest Network (Red de Bosques Andinos, https://redbosques.condesan.org/) database which, at present, includes 491 forest plots (totaling 156.3 ha, ranging from 0.01 to 6 ha) representing a total of 86,964 identified tree stems ≥ 10 cm diameter at breast height belonging to 2341 identified species, 584 genera and 133 botanical families. Tree stem density and basal area increases with elevation while species richness decreases. Stem density and species richness both decrease with latitude. Subtropical forests have distinct tree species composition compared to those in the tropical region. In addition, floristic similarity of subtropical plots is between 13 to 16% while similarity between tropical forest plots is between 3% to 9%. Overall, plots ~ 0.5-ha or larger may be preferred for describing patterns at regional scales in order to avoid plot size effects. We highlight the need to promote collaboration and capacity building among researchers in the Andean region (i.e., South-South cooperation) in order to generate and synthesize information at regional scale. © 2020 Malizia et al. - Abstract
What kind of research questions do ecologists make in relation to plastic waste in Argentina? This question gathered a group of researchers at the symposium "Ecology of plastic waste: What do we study in Argentina?", held at the XXVIII Argentinian Ecology Meeting. In this communication we analyze the national context on plastic waste. Our studies on the ecology of plastics sought to mitigate, on the one hand, and to quantify plastic waste, on the other hand. These studies occurred in the northern half of the country, in terrestrial and aquatic environments, and were focused on different plastic materials and diverse organisms, though bacteria were of interest for the majority of us. We conclude with guiding questions for ecologists, based on the Sustainable Development Objectives of the UN. These questions are related to: Clean Water and Sanitation, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, and Life Below Water and on Land. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

En la sierra de San Javier (Tucumán, Argentina) se presentan bosques secundarios nativos e invadidos, estos últimos dominados por Ligustrum lucidum, que afecta la biodiversidad nativa. Analizamos la influencia del bosque dominado por L. lucidum sobre las comunidades de lianas en comparación con bosques secundarios nativos sin dominancia de especies exóticas. Los bosques fueron comparados en abundancia, composición, modalidades de trepado y distribución de clases de tamaños de los tallos de lianas. Para ello se establecieron un total de 10 cuadrantes en el sector pedemontano de yungas de la sierra de San Javier en los cuales se midió, identificó y relevó los tallos de lianas ≥ a 0.5 cm y los árboles ≥ a 10 cm en diámetro a la altura del pecho. El bosque nativo presentó cuatro veces mayor abundancia y mayor riqueza de tallos de lianas en comparación con el bosque invadido. Los individuos de L. lucidum hospedaron tallos de lianas en muy baja abundancia y en el bosque dominado por esta especie exótica los hospedadores de lianas fueron principalmente árboles nativos. Además de no constituir soportes adecuados de lianas, se manifiesta una influencia indirecta a través de la exclusión de las especies de árboles nativos que las hospedan. Native and invaded secondary forests are present in sierra de San Javier, the latter dominated by Ligustrum lucidum, which exerts an influence on native biodiversity. We analyzed the influence of the forest dominated by L. lucidum over liana communities compared to native secondary forests without dominance of exotic species. Forests were compared in abundance, composition, climbing mechanisms and distribution in size classes of liana stems. For this, liana stems ≥ 0.5 cm and the trees ≥ 10 cm in diameter at height breast, were measured, identified and surveyed in 10 plots located in the yungas piedmont of sierra de San Javier. Native forests had four times more abundance and richness of liana stems than invaded forest of L. lucidum. Individual trees of L. lucidum hosted liana stems in very low abundance, and in the forest dominated by this exotic species, the liana hosts were mainly native trees. Besides the fact that they do not constitute suitable hosts for lianas, they have an indirect influence through the exclusion of native host trees of lianas. Fil: Ceballos, Sergio Javier. [ES]La urbanización del planeta implica un cambio importante en los usos del suelo y, consecuentemente, de las propiedades térmicas de las superficies terrestres. En este trabajo se analiza el impacto de la urbanización en el Gran San Miguel de Tucumán (Argentina). Se estudia el tipo de vegetación que se recupera en la zona tras el proceso de construcción de la ciudad, la transición de vegetación natural a vegetación de parques y jardines. Además se analiza, a través de imágenes de satélite, la temperatura de las superficies de la zona en estudio, relacionándose los patrones térmicos con las zonas vegetadas de la ciudad. A partir de la temperatura de superficie se calcula el valor de la Isla de Calor Urbana Superficial que, calculada para imágenes diurnas, da valores negativos para finales de invierno y primavera, y positivos para el verano. También a través de las imágenes de satélite se obtiene el aumento de la zona construida entre los años 1992 y 2008 se observa un incremento de la superficie urbana del 66%. Finalmente, se presenta un modelo que podrá ayudar a planificar y afrontar el crecimiento urbano y el consecuente cambio que este provoca en los patrones térmicos de la zona y en su vegetación. [EN]The urbanization of the planet involves an important change in the soil uses. Therefore, thermal properties of the surfaces have changed. In this work the impact of the urbanization is analyzed in the Gran San Miguel de Tucuman (Argentina). It is studied the change from natural vegetation cover to urban vegetation as squares or gardens. Moreover, satellite images are used to study the surface temperature, and it is observed that the thermal patterns are connected with the vegetated areas in the city. Land surface temperature is used to measure the value of the Surface Urban Heat Island. This phenomenon is measured using daytime images, negative values are obtained in winter and spring while positive values for summer time. The growing of the built area is monitored with satellite images observing an increase of the urban area of the 66% between year 1992 and year 2008. Finally, an urban growing model is presented; this would help to plan and face up the urban growing and changes in thermal patterns and vegetation. La cobertura, altura de la vegetación y riqueza de especies total y para diferentes formas de vida después de una estación de crecimiento fueron censados en 15 sitios ubicados sobre la traza de un gasoducto en un gradiente altitudinal entre 400-2000 m en las montañas del noroeste argentino (23°S). La cobertura de la vegetación disminuyó con la altitud, aunque fue alta en todos los sitios (> 60%). La riqueza total de especies y la altura máxima de la vegetación no variaron significativamente con la altitud. La cobertura de pastos y la cobertura y riqueza de especies de árboles, pequeños arbustos y lianas disminuyeron con la altitud, mientras que la riqueza de hierbas aumentó. Tanto la riqueza y cobertura de arbustos, como la cobertura de hierbas y la riqueza de pastos no mostraron variaciones. Si bien la cobertura o riqueza de la mayoría de las formas de vida disminuyeron con la altitud, los resultados de este estudio sugieren que en el gradiente altitudinal estudiado la recuperación de la vegetación es relativamente rápida en todo el gradiente luego de perturbaciones humanas de este tipo, probablemente por la baja limitación a la dispersión y por la disponibilidad de especies adaptadas a perturbaciones intensas. La recuperación de la vegetación luego de la construcción de gasoductos o perturbaciones similares puede permitir restauraciones ecológicas relativamente rápidas en bosques subtropicales de montaña. After one growing season of recovery, vegetation cover and height, species richness, and life forms composition were surveyed in 15 sites located along a gas-pipeline track running through an altitudinal range from 400-2000 m in the subtropical mountains of north-western Argentina (23°S). Vegetation cover was negatively correlated with altitude but was generally high at all sites (> 60%) after one year. Total species richness and maximum vegetation height did not vary significantly with altitude. Cover of grasses, and cover and species richness of trees, small shrubs and climbers were negatively correlated with altitude. Herb species richness correlated positively with altitude. Large shrub richness and cover showed no statistical relationship with altitude. The relative cover of herbs and grass species richness did not vary along the altitudinal gradient. Overall, these results indicate that in the altitudinal range studied, vegetation recovery is relatively high after this type of disturbance, probably due to low dispersal limitations and to the availability of species well adapted to intense disturbances. Vegetation recovery after gas-pipeline construction or similar perturbations may lead to relatively fast ecological restoration in subtropical montane forest ecosystems.

- Abstract
Tropical forests are the most diverse and productive ecosystems on Earth. While better understanding of these forests is critical for our collective future, until quite recently efforts to measure and monitor them have been largely disconnected. Networking is essential to discover the answers to questions that transcend borders and the horizons of funding agencies. Here we show how a global community is responding to the challenges of tropical ecosystem research with diverse teams measuring forests tree-by-tree in thousands of long-term plots. We review the major scientific discoveries of this work and show how this process is changing tropical forest science. Our core approach involves linking long-term grassroots initiatives with standardized protocols and data management to generate robust scaled-up results. By connecting tropical researchers and elevating their status, our Social Research Network model recognises the key role of the data originator in scientific discovery. Conceived in 1999 with RAINFOR (South America), our permanent plot networks have been adapted to Africa (AfriTRON) and Southeast Asia (T-FORCES) and widely emulated worldwide. Now these multiple initiatives are integrated via ForestPlots.net cyber-infrastructure, linking colleagues from 54 countries across 24 plot networks. Collectively these are transforming understanding of tropical forests and their biospheric role. Together we have discovered how, where and why forest carbon and biodiversity are responding to climate change, and how they feedback on it. Lianas y epífitas vasculares son organismos intersticiales que dependen del soporte de los árboles. Cuando ocurren procesos de des-intensificación del impacto antrópico, lianas y epífitas pueden recolonizar los bosques en regiones tropicales. Sin embargo se desconoce cómo responden las lianas y epífitas a esta des-intensificación en bosques subtropicales, cómo varía esta respuesta en relación a la composición de los bosques (e.g. nativos versus exóticos) y a qué edad estas comunidades de plantas alcanzan los atributos ecológicos de bosques maduros que se encuentran en mejor estado de conservación. En esta tesis se caracterizó la dinámica de las comunidades de lianas y epífitas en bosques de yungas de la Sierra de San Javier (Tucumán, Argentina) teniendo en cuenta estos interrogantes. Se describieron varios aspectos ecológicos de sus comunidades: cambios en un gradiente de bosques de diferente edad y en bosques invadidos por especies exóticas que ocurren en las comunidades de lianas (capítulo II) y epífitas (capítulo III), cambios de las comunidades de lianas durante un período de 12 años en un bosque maduro (capítulo IV) y se analizó la red de interacciones entre epífitas y árboles hospedadores en bosques maduros (capítulo V). Se muestrearon lianas ≥ 1 cm de diámetro, epífitas, y árboles ≥ 10 cm de diámetro a la altura del pecho en 6.4 de bosques maduros, bosques secundarios nativos e invadidos por las especies exóticas Ligustrum lucidum y Morus alba. Las comunidades de lianas y epífitas presentaron mayor riqueza, densidad y cobertura en bosques maduros que en bosques secundarios nativos. Estas comunidades de plantas mostraron capacidad para colonizar, persistir e incrementar en densidad y cobertura durante la sucesión de los bosques nativos. Sin embargo, en bosques secundarios dominados por L. lucidum y M. alba, las lianas y epífitas cambiaron en estructura y riqueza. Las comunidades de lianas y epífitas disminuyeron en riqueza, densidad y cobertura con el incremento en la densidad de L. lucidum. En cambio, la invasión de M. alba tendió a incrementar la densidad de lianas y reducir la riqueza y el porcentaje de árboles colonizados por epífitas. La estructura de la comunidad de lianas también cambió a través del tiempo en un bosque maduro, debido a que disminuyeron en densidad y aumentaron en área basal en un período de 12 años entre 2003 y 2015. En este período las especies de lianas que disminuyeron en densidad fueron demandantes de luz, mientras que las tolerantes a la sombra incrementaron, posiblemente como consecuencia de la recuperación del bosque de disturbios pasados. Las comunidades de lianas y epífitas vasculares variaron entre los diferentes tipos de bosque dependiendo de su edad y composición (e.g. nativos vs. exóticos). En esta tesis se reportaron las características de las comunidades de lianas y epífitas en diferentes tipos de bosque y la dinámica de estas comunidades de plantas en bosques maduros. Los resultados obtenidos fueron importantes para evaluar el estado de conservación de estas comunidades en los bosques y su capacidad de recuperación natural como consecuencia de la des-intensificación del impacto antrópico. Lianas and vascular epiphytes are interstitial organisms because they depend on the structural support of the trees. Based on studies performed mainly in tropical regions, lianas and epiphytes can return to forests that grow after the de-intensification of the anthropic impact. It remains unknown how lianas and epiphytes respond to the de-intensification of human influence in subtropical forests, how their response change based on forest composition (e.g. native vs. exotic), and when their structure and diversity in secondary forests approaches that of mature forests. All those aspects were considered in this thesis to characterize the dynamics of liana and vascular epiphyte communities in yungas forests of Sierra de San Javier (Tucumán, Argentina). Several ecological aspects of these plant communities were described, including: changes across gradients of forest succession and tree invasion in liana communities (chapter II) and epiphyte communities (chapter III), changes of a liana community over a 12-y period in a mature forest (chapter IV), and the interaction network between epiphytes and host trees in mature forests. Lianas with a diameter ≥ 1 cm, epiphytes, and trees with a diameter ≥ 10 cm at breast height were surveyed in 6.4 ha of mature forests, native secondary forests, and invaded secondary forests by the exotic tree species Ligustrum lucidum and Morus alba. Lianas and epiphytes had higher species richness, density and cover in mature forests compared to native secondary forests. Results showed that lianas and epiphyte communities had great capacity for the colonization of native secondary forests and for persistence during forest succession. However, at early or mid-successional stages, the invasion of exotic tree species such as L. lucidum and M. alba influenced the structure and species richness of lianas and epiphytes. L. lucidum invasion reduced the richness and density of lianas, and the richness and cover of epiphytes. M. alba invasion tended to increase liana density and reduced epiphyte richness, and the percentage of trees colonized by epiphytes. In a mature forest within the area, the liana community changed over a 12-y period between 2003 and 2015: they decreased in density but increased in basal area. Over this period, light-demanding liana species decreased in density whereas shade-tolerant species increased, possibly influenced by the reduction of anthropic influence that this forest experienced in recent decades. Lianas and epiphytes communities showed different ecological attributes depending on forest age and composition (native vs. exotic). Characteristics of these communities were reported in this thesis considering different forest types (secondary and mature forests dominated by native tree species, and secondary forests invaded by exotic tree species) and ecological gradients (successional and tree invaded gradients). Results reported here were important to evaluate the conservation status of lianas and epiphyte communities in these forests, and their capacity of natural recovery after anthropic de-intensification. Spatial patterns in communities of aquatic macroinvertebrates of Argentinean Puna. The macroinvertebrates are a vital component of freshwater ecosystems as they contribute to the process of organic matter while serving as food for other organisms such as fish and amphibians. Unfortunately, the knowledge of the aquatic diversity is poor in the high Andean systems (between 3 200 and 5 200 m.a.s.l. and rainfall below 300 mm per year), especially in the Argentinean peatbogs, a fact which has made difficult the interpretation of spatial patterns on a regional scale. The present study aimed to describe the composition of aquatic macroinvertebrates in seven peatbogs in the Argentinean Puna, and to analyze for the first time their spatial patterns. For this, we studied the relationship of these organisms with the environment, and obtained information about the surrounding vegetation and water physico-chemical characteristics. A total of 3 131 specimens of aquatic macroinvertebrates were collected, representing 25 taxa belonging to 22 families and 24 genera. In addition, 62 species of vascular plants were recorded, belonging to 20 families. The most abundant life form were the tufted grasses, followed by cushions. By using an NMDS (Non-Metrical Multidimensional Scaling) statistical analysis, the sampling sites were ordered in each peatbog as follows. The peatbogs located furthest West and South with higher water temperature were grouped on axis 1, whereas those with higher conductivity, whole water dissolved solids and salt concentration were grouped on axis 2. The water temperature was higher than air temperature at all times, and we found no association between temperature and altitude. The altitude had no correlation with the abundance of macroinvertebrates or with plant richness. Life forms such as scattered graminoids, trailing and prostrate herbs (in many cases they get into the channel) and aquatic plants were more abundant in peatbogs 4, 5 and 7 and they had a correlation with some macroinvertebrates belonging to functional trophic groups such as filter-collectors, collectors and scrapers. Finally, conductivity, whole dissolved solids and salt concentration had their highest value in peatbog 6, where Bivalvia (filter-collector) and Hyalella (collector) were also found. The results obtained attest that these macroinvertebrates displayed diversity and composition spatial patterns, the most important feature being their relationship with the surrounding vegetation, and to a lesser extent, with the physical and chemical traits of water in seven fertile lowlands in the Argentinean Puna.
