The Lamb dipole is a traveling wave solution to the two-dimensional Euler equations introduced by S. A. Chaplygin (1903) and H. Lamb (1906) at the early 20th century. We prove orbital stability of this solution based on a vorticity method initiated by V. I. Arnold. Our method is a minimization of a penalized energy with multiple constraints that deduces existence and orbital stability for a family of traveling waves. As a typical case, orbital stability of the Lamb dipole is deduced by characterizing a set of minimizers as an orbit of the dipole by a uniqueness theorem in the variational setting., Comment: 41 pages

The $m$-waves of Kelvin are uniformly rotating patch solutions of the 2D Euler equations with $m$-fold rotational symmetry for $m\geq 2$. For Kelvin waves sufficiently close to the disc, we prove a nonlinear stability result up to an arbitrarily long time in the $L^1$ norm of the vorticity, for $m$-fold symmetric perturbations. To obtain this result, we first prove that the Kelvin wave is a strict local maximizer of the energy functional in some admissible class of patches, which had been claimed by Wan in 1986. This gives an orbital stability result with a support condition on the evolution of perturbations, but using a Lagrangian bootstrap argument which traces the particle trajectories of the perturbation, we are able to drop the condition on the evolution. Based on this unconditional stability result, we establish that long time filamentation, or formation of long arms, occurs near the Kelvin waves, which have been observed in various numerical simulations. We consider the incompressible Euler equations in the half cylinder $ \mathbb{R}_{>0}\times\mathbb{T}$. In this domain, any vorticity which is independent of $x_2$ defines a stationary solution. We prove that such a stationary solution is nonlinearly stable in a weighted $L^{1}$ norm involving the horizontal impulse, if the vorticity is non-negative and non-increasing in $x_1$. This includes stability of cylindrical patches $\{x_{1}0$. The stability result is based on the fact that such a profile is the unique minimizer of the horizontal impulse among all functions with the same distribution function. We consider a hyperbolic–parabolic system arising from a chemotaxis model in tumor angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller–Segel equation with singular sensitivity. It is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves). We introduce a relative entropy of the system, which can capture how close a solution at a given time is to a given shock wave in almost [Formula: see text]-sense. When the shock strength is small enough, we show the functional is non-increasing in time for any large initial perturbation. The contraction property holds independently of the strength of the diffusion.

We prove linear in time filamentation for perturbations of the Lamb dipole, which is a traveling wave solution to the incompressible Euler equations in $\mathbb{R}^2$. The main ingredient is a recent nonlinear orbital stability result by Abe-Choi. As a consequence, we obtain linear in time growth for the vorticity gradient for all times, for certain smooth and compactly supported initial vorticity in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We consider a simplified model of tumor angiogenesis, described by a Keller–Segel equation on the two dimensional domain ( x , y ) ∈ R × S λ where S λ is the circle of perimeter λ. It is known that the system allows planar traveling wave solutions of an invading type. In case that λ is sufficiently small, we establish the nonlinear stability of traveling wave solutions in the absence of chemical diffusion if the initial perturbation is sufficiently small in some weighted Sobolev space. When chemical diffusion is present, it can be shown that the system is linearly stable. Lastly, we prove that any solution with our front condition eventually becomes planar under certain regularity conditions.

In connection with the recent proposal for possible singularity formation at the boundary for solutions of three-dimensional axisymmetric incompressible Euler's equations (Luo and Hou, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA (2014)), we study models for the dynamics at the boundary and show that they exhibit a finite-time blowup from smooth data.

We consider the incompressible two-dimensional Euler equation in the plane in the case when its initial vorticity is the characteristic function of a bounded open set. We show that the travel distance grows linearly for most of fluid particles initially placed on the set when the area of the symmetric difference between the set and a disk is small enough., 6 pages

We consider the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. We construct vortex patches with smooth boundary on $T^2$ and $R^2$ whose perimeter grows with time. More precisely, for any constant $M > 0$, we construct a vortex patch in $T^2$ whose smooth boundary has length of order 1 at the initial time such that the perimeter grows up to the given constant $M$ within finite time. The construction is done by cutting a thin stick out of an almost square patch. A similar result holds for an almost round patch with a thin handle in $R^2$., 6 pages, 2 figures

We consider a one-dimensional system arising from a chemotaxis model in tumour angiogenesis, which is described by a Keller-Segel equation with singular sensitivity. This hyperbolic-parabolic system is known to allow viscous shocks (so-called traveling waves), and in literature, their nonlinear stability has been considered in the class of certain mean-zero small perturbations. We show the global existence of solution without assuming the mean-zero condition for any initial data as arbitrarily large perturbations around traveling waves in the Sobolev space H 1 while the shock strength is assumed to be small enough. The main novelty of this paper is to develop the global well-posedness of any large H 1 -perturbations of traveling waves connecting two different end states. The discrepancy of the end states is linked to the complexity of the corresponding flux, which requires a new type of an energy estimate. To overcome this issue, we use the a priori contraction estimate of a weighted relative entropy functional up to a translation, which was proved by Choi-Kang-Kwon-Vasseur [4] . The boundedness of the shift implies a priori bound of the relative entropy functional without the shift on any time interval of existence, which produces a H 1 -estimate thanks to a De Giorgi type lemma. Moreover, to remove possibility of vacuum appearance, we use the lemma again.

We consider a simplified chemotaxis model of tumor angiogenesis, described by a Keller-Segel system on the two dimensional infinite cylindrical domain $(x, y) \in \mathbb{R} \times {\mathbf S^{\lambda}}$, where $ \mathbf S^{\lambda}$ is the circle of perimeter $\lambda>0$. The domain models a virtual channel where newly generated blood vessels toward the vascular endothelial growth factor will be located. The system is known to allow planar traveling wave solutions of an invading type. In this paper, we establish the nonlinear stability of these traveling invading waves when chemical diffusion is present if $\lambda$ is sufficiently small. The same result for the corresponding system in one-dimension was obtained by Li-Li-Wang (2014) [16]. The 2D conservative Boussinesq system describes inviscid, incompressible, buoyant fluid flow in gravity field. The possibility of finite time blow up for solutions of this system is a classical problem of mathematical hydrodynamics. We consider a 1D model of 2D Boussinesq system motivated by a particular finite time blow up scenario. In this paper, we consider non-local integro-differential equations under certain natural assumptions on the kernel, and obtain persistence of Holder continuity for their solutions. In other words, we prove that a solution stays in $C^\beta$ for all time if its initial data lies in $C^\beta$. This result has an application for a fully non-linear problem, which is used in the field of image processing. In addition, we show Holder regularity for solutions of drift diffusion equations with supercritical fractional diffusion under the assumption $b\in L^\infty C^{1-\alpha}$ on the divergent-free drift velocity. The proof is in the spirit of [23] where Kiselev and Nazarov established Holder continuity of the critical surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation.
