Central sleep apnea (CSA) is universal during ascent to high altitude, with intermittent and transient fluctuations in oxygen saturation, but the consequences on mean sleeping blood oxygenation are unclear. We assessed indices of CSA and mean sleeping peripheral oxygen saturation ([Formula: see text]) during ascent to high altitude using two ascent profiles: rapid ascent and residence at 3,800 m and incremental ascent to 5,160 m. The severity of CSA was not correlated with mean sleeping [Formula: see text] with ascent.

The hypercapnic chemoresponse to transient CO2 showed an increase during acute physical activity; however, this response did not persist with further increases in intensity and was not different between participants of different aerobic fitness. Males and females show a differing response to CO2 during exercise when compared with an iso-V̇co2. Our results suggest that adaptations that lead to increased aerobic fitness do not impact the hypercapnic ventilatory response but there is an effect of sex.

We sought to determine the impact of wearing cloth or surgical masks on the cardiopulmonary responses to moderate-intensity exercise. Twelve subjects (n = 5 females) completed three, 8-min cycling trials while breathing through a non-rebreathing valve (laboratory control), cloth, or surgical mask. Heart rate (HR), oxyhemoglobin saturation (SpO2), breathing frequency, mouth pressure, partial pressure of end-tidal carbon dioxide (PetCO2) and oxygen (PetO2), dyspnea were measured throughout exercise. A subset of n = 6 subjects completed an additional exercise bout without a mask (ecological control). There were no differences in breathing frequency, HR or SpO2 across conditions (all p > 0.05). Compared with the laboratory control (4.7 ± 0.9 cmH2O [mean ± SD]), mouth pressure swings were smaller with the surgical mask (0.9 ± 0.7; p < 0.0001), but similar with the cloth mask (3.6 ± 4.8 cmH2O; p = 0.66). Wearing a cloth mask decreased PetO2 (−3.5 ± 3.7 mm Hg) and increased PetCO2 (+2.0 ± 1.3 mm Hg) relative to the ecological control (both p < 0.05). There were no differences in end-tidal gases between mask conditions and laboratory control (both p > 0.05). Dyspnea was similar between the control conditions and the surgical mask (p > 0.05) but was greater with the cloth mask compared with laboratory (+0.9 ± 1.2) and ecological (+1.5 ± 1.3) control conditions (both p < 0.05). Wearing a mask during short-term moderate-intensity exercise may increase dyspnea but has minimal impact on the cardiopulmonary response. Novelty: Wearing surgical or cloth masks during exercise has no impact on breathing frequency, tidal volume, oxygenation, and heart rate However, there are some changes in inspired and expired gas fractions that are physiologically irrelevant. In young healthy individuals, wearing surgical or cloth masks during submaximal exercise has few physiological consequences.

In Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), impaired response inhibition and lack of adaptation are hypothesized to underlie core ASD symptoms, such as social communication and repetitive, stereotyped behavior. Thus, the aim of the present study was to compare neural correlates of inhibition, post-error adaptation, and reaction time variability in ASD and neuro-typical control (NTC) participants by investigating possible differences in error-related changes of oscillatory MEG activity. Twelve male NTC (mean age 20.3 ± 3.7) and fourteen male patients with ASD (mean age 17.8 ± 2.9) were included in the analysis. Subjects with ASD showed increased error-related reaction time variability. MEG analysis revealed decreased beta power in the ASD group in comparison to the NTC group over the centro-parietal channels in both, the pre-stimulus and post-response interval. In the ASD group, mean centro-parietal beta power negatively correlated with dimensional autism symptoms. In both groups, false alarms were followed by an early increase in temporo-frontal theta to alpha power; and by a later decrease in alpha to beta power at central and posterior sensors. Single trial correlations were additionally studied in the ASD group, who showed a positive correlation of pre-stimulus beta power with post-response theta, alpha, and beta power, particularly after hit trials. On a broader scale, the results deliver important insights into top-down control deficits that may relate to core symptoms observed in ASD.

Promoting physical activity amongst older adults represents a major public health goal and community-led exercise programmes present benefits in promoting active lifestyles. Commercial activity trackers potentially encourage positive behaviour change with respect to physical exercise. This qualitative study investigated the experiences and attitudes of older adults following a 6-week community-led walking programme utilising activity trackers. Eleven community-dwelling older women aged 60+ completed individual phone interviews following their involvement in the programme. The programme, codesigned with a group of senior citizens, equipped participants with wrist-worn activity trackers and included biweekly check-in sessions with a researcher to monitor progress and support motivation. Interviews explored participants’ experiences of the programme and of using activity trackers for the purpose of becoming more active. A thematic analysis produced three main themes: ‘programme as a source of motivation’, ‘user experiences with the technology’ and ‘views on social dimension of the programme’. Overall, participants highlighted the self-monitoring function of activity trackers as most beneficial for their exercise levels. This study provides insights into the personal and social factors perceived by older adults in relation to being part of a community-led programme using activity trackers. It highlights the role of the programme and trackers in maintaining motivation to stay active.

Summary Cell-cell interactions shape cellular function and ultimately organismal phenotype. However, the spatial code embedded in the molecular interactions driving and sustaining spatial organization remains to be elucidated. Here we present a computational framework to infer the spatial code underlying cell-cell interactions in a whole animal. Using the transcriptomes of the cell types composing Caenorhabditis elegans’ body, we compute the potential for intercellular interactions from the coexpression of ligand-receptor pairs. Leveraging a 3D atlas of C. elegans’ cells and a genetic algorithm we identify the ligand-receptor pairs most informative of the spatial organization of cells. The resulting intercellular distances are negatively correlated with the potential for cell-cell interaction, validating this strategy. Further, for selected ligand-receptor pairs, we experimentally confirm the algorithm-generated cell-cell interactions. Thus, our computational framework helps identify a code associated with spatial organization and cellular functions across a whole-animal body, showing that single-cell molecular measurements provide spatial information that may help elucidate organismal phenotypes and disease. Smaller airways increase resistance and the propensity toward turbulent airflow, both of which are thought to be mechanisms behind greater resistive and total work of breathing (Wb) in females. Previous research examining the effect of airway size on the Wb between the sexes is limited by the inability to experimentally manipulate airway size. Heliox (21% oxygen, balance helium) is less dense than room air, which reduces turbulent airflow and airway resistance. The purpose of our study was to utilize heliox inspiration in women to provide a stimulus physiologically similar to increasing airway size. We hypothesized that when breathing heliox women would have a Wb similar to men breathing room air. Eighteen healthy young subjects (n = 9 women, 9 men) completed two maximal exercise tests on a cycle ergometer over 2 days. Subjects breathed room air for one test and heliox for the other. Wb was assessed with an esophageal balloon catheter. During the room air trial, when ventilations were >65 L/min, women had a significantly greater Wb compared with men (P < 0.05). The greater Wb in women was due to greater resistance to turbulent flow. For both sexes, breathing heliox resulted in increased expiratory flow (+132 ± 18% of room air), an elimination of expiratory flow limitation, and a reduction in Wb (69 ± 12% of room air) (all P < 0.05). When the women were breathing heliox, Wb was not different from that in the men breathing room air. Our findings support the idea that the smaller conducting airways in females are responsible for a greater total and resistive Wb. NEW & NOTEWORTHY When healthy young women breathe heliox gas during exercise, their work of breathing is not different from men breathing room air. Heliox inspiration reduces airway resistance and promotes laminar flow, which is a physiologically similar effect of increasing airway size. Our findings provide experimental evidence that smaller airways in women are responsible for the greater work of breathing during exercise.

Introduction Sleep disordered breathing comes in two forms: obstructive and central sleep apnea (SA). Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused by upper airway collapse during sleep, and is associated with increases in morbidity and mortality. Conversely, central sleep apnea (CSA) results from increases in respiratory chemosensitivity to blood gas challenges in the context of high-altitude ascent. CSA increases in severity and apneas shorten in duration with higher ascent and/or time spent at altitude. Although both types of SA are characterized by intermittent periods of apnea and hyperventilation, the underlying mechanisms and phenotypes between OSA and CSA are different. A universal scoring system for the two types of context-dependent SA may lead to errors in quantification. The American Association of Sleep Medicine (AASM) developed assessment criteria for SA, which are universally-utilized for all types of SA to quantify an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI; events/hour), where apneas are scored as cessation of breathing ≥10-sec. We aimed to assess the effect of reducing the apnea-detection threshold (ADT) to Methods We assessed CSA using portable polysomnography (ApneaLink, ResMed) during ascent to 5160m in the Nepal Himalaya over 10 days in 15 healthy participants. Files were archived digitally for later analysis using automated scoring software (ApneaLink Reporting Software, ResMed). We quantified and compared AHI using AASM criteria (i.e., 10-sec ADT) and a shorter 5-sec ADT. Multisensory integration strongly depends on the temporal proximity between two inputs. In the audio-visual domain, stimulus pairs with delays up to a few hundred milliseconds can be perceived as simultaneous and integrated into a unified percept. Previous research has shown that the size of this temporal window of integration can be narrowed by feedback-guided training on an audio-visual simultaneity judgment task. Yet, it has remained uncertain how the neural network that processes audio-visual asynchronies is affected by the training. In the present study, participants were trained on a 2-interval forced choice audio-visual simultaneity judgment task. We recorded their neural activity with magnetoencephalography in response to three different stimulus onset asynchronies (0 ms, each participant’s individual binding window, 300 ms) before, and one day following training. The Individual Window stimulus onset asynchrony condition was derived by assessing each participant’s point of subjective simultaneity. Training improved performance in both asynchronous stimulus onset conditions (300 ms, Individual Window). Furthermore, beta-band amplitude (12–30 Hz) increased from pre-compared to post-training sessions. This increase moved across central, parietal, and temporal sensors during the time window of 80–410 ms post-stimulus onset. Considering the putative role of beta oscillations in carrying feedback from higher to lower cortical areas, these findings suggest that enhanced top-down modulation of sensory processing is responsible for the improved temporal acuity after training. As beta oscillations can be assumed to also preferentially support neural communication over longer conduction delays, the widespread topography of our effect could indicate that training modulates not only processing within primary sensory cortex, but rather the communication within a large-scale network.

The sound-induced flash illusion is a multisensory illusion occurring when one flash is presented with two beeps and perceived as two flashes. Younger individuals are largely susceptible to the illusion when the stimulus onset asynchrony between the first and the second beep falls within the temporal window of integration, but the susceptibility falls dramatically outside of this short temporal range. Older individuals, in particular older adults prone to falling and/or mild cognitive impairment, show an extended susceptibility to the illusion. This suggests that they have inefficient multisensory integration, particularly in the temporal domain. In the present study, we investigated the reliability of the illusion across younger and older people, guided by the hypothesis that the experimental context, i.e., exposure to a wider or smaller number of stimulus onset asynchronies, would modify the intra-personal susceptibility to the illusion at shorter asynchronies vs. longer asynchronies, likely due to the gathering of model evidence based on Bayesian inference. We tested 22 young adults and 29 older adults and verified these hypotheses. Both groups showed higher susceptibility to the illusion when exposed to a smaller range of asynchronies, but only for longer ones, not within the 100 ms window. We discuss the theoretical implications in terms of online perceptual learning and practical implications in terms of standardisation of the experimental context when attempting to find normative values.

The neurophysiological underpinnings of the nonsocial symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) which include sensory and perceptual atypicalities remain poorly understood. Well-known accounts of less dominant top-down influences and more dominant bottom-up processes compete to explain these characteristics. These accounts have been recently embedded in the popular framework of predictive coding theory. To differentiate between competing accounts, we studied altered information dynamics in ASD by quantifying predictable information in neural signals. Predictable information in neural signals measures the amount of stored information that is used for the next time step of a neural process. Thus, predictable information limits the (prior) information which might be available for other brain areas, for example, to build predictions for upcoming sensory information. We studied predictable information in neural signals based on resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings of 19 ASD patients and 19 neurotypical controls aged between 14 and 27 years. Using whole-brain beamformer source analysis, we found reduced predictable information in ASD patients across the whole brain, but in particular in posterior regions of the default mode network. In these regions, epoch-by-epoch predictable information was positively correlated with source power in the alpha and beta frequency range as well as autocorrelation decay time. Predictable information in precuneus and cerebellum was negatively associated with nonsocial symptom severity, indicating a relevance of the analysis of predictable information for clinical research in ASD. Our findings are compatible with the assumption that use or precision of prior knowledge is reduced in ASD patients.

Aging is accompanied by unisensory decline; but to compensate for this, two complementary strategies are potentially relied upon increasingly: first, older adults integrate more information from different sensory organs. Second, according to predictive coding (PC) we form ‘templates’ (internal models or ‘priors’) of the environment through our experiences. It is through increased life experience that older adults may rely more on these templates compared to younger adults. Multisensory integration and predictive coding would be effective strategies for the perception of near-threshold stimuli, but they come at the cost of integrating irrelevant information. Their role can be studied in multisensory illusions because these require the integration of different sensory information, as well as an internal model of the world that can take precedence over sensory input. Here, we elicited a classic multisensory illusion, the sound-induced flash illusion, in younger (mean: 27 yrs) and older (mean: 67 yrs) adult participants while recording the magnetoencephalogram. Older adults perceived more illusions than younger adults. Older adults had increased pre-stimulus beta(β)-band activity compared to younger adults as predicted by microcircuit theories of predictive coding, which suggest priors and predictions are linked to β-band activity. In line with our hypothesis, transfer entropy analysis and dynamic causal models of pre-stimulus MEG data revealed a stronger illusion-related modulation of cross-modal connectivity from auditory to visual cortices in older compared to younger adults. We interpret this as the neural correlate of increased reliance on a cross-modal predictive template in older adults that is leading to the illusory percept.

Audition is accepted as more reliable (thus dominant) than vision when temporal discrimination is required by the task. However, it is not known whether the characteristics of the visual stimulus, for example its familiarity to the perceiver, affect auditory dominance. In this study we manipulated familiarity of the visual stimulus in a well-established multisensory phenomenon, i.e., the sound-induced flash illusion. This illusion occurs when, for example, one brief visual stimulus (e.g., a flash) is presented in close temporal proximity with two brief sounds; participants perceive two flashes instead of one. We found that when the visual stimuli (faces or buildings) were familiar, participants were less susceptible to the illusion than when they were unfamiliar. As the illusion has been ascribed to early cross-sensory interactions between vision and audition, the present work offers behavioural evidence that high level processing of objects' characteristics such as familiarity, affects early temporal multisensory integration. Possible mechanisms underlying the effect of familiarity are discussed.

The new DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) include sensory disturbances in addition to the well-established language, communication, and social deficits. One sensory disturbance seen in ASD is an impaired ability to integrate multisensory information into a unified percept. This may arise from an underlying impairment in which individuals with ASD have difficulty perceiving the temporal relationship between cross-modal inputs, an important cue for multisensory integration. Such impairments in multisensory processing may cascade into higher-level deficits, impairing day-to-day functioning on tasks, such as speech perception. To investigate multisensory temporal processing deficits in ASD and their links to speech processing, the current study mapped performance on a number of multisensory temporal tasks (with both simple and complex stimuli) onto the ability of individuals with ASD to perceptually bind audiovisual speech signals. High-functioning children with ASD were compared with a group of typically developing children. Performance on the multisensory temporal tasks varied with stimulus complexity for both groups; less precise temporal processing was observed with increasing stimulus complexity. Notably, individuals with ASD showed a speech-specific deficit in multisensory temporal processing. Most importantly, the strength of perceptual binding of audiovisual speech observed in individuals with ASD was strongly related to their low-level multisensory temporal processing abilities. Collectively, the results represent the first to illustrate links between multisensory temporal function and speech processing in ASD, strongly suggesting that deficits in low-level sensory processing may cascade into higher-order domains, such as language and communication.

PUBLISHED, Task-dependent information processing for the purpose of recognition or spatial perception is considered a principle common to all the main sensory modalities. Using a dual-task interference paradigm, we investigated the behavioral effects of independent information processing for shape identification and localization of object features within and across vision and touch. In Experiment 1, we established that color and texture processing (i.e., a ?what? task) interfered with both visual and haptic shape-matching tasks and that mirror image and rotation matching (i.e., a ?where? task) interfered with a feature-location-matching task in both modalities. In contrast, interference was reduced when a ?where? interference task was embedded in a ?what? primary task and vice versa. In Experiment 2, we replicated this finding within each modality, using the same interference and primary tasks throughout. In Experiment 3, the interference tasks were always conducted in a modality other than the primary task modality. Here, we found that resources for identification and spatial localization are independent of modality. Our findings further suggest that multisensory resources for shape recognition also involve resources for spatial localization. These results extend recent neuropsychological and neuroimaging findings and have important implications for our understanding of high-level information processing across the human sensory systems., This study was funded by the European Commission under ?Information Society Technologies? In auditory research, it is often desirable to present more than two auditory stimuli at any one time. Although the technology has been available for some time, the majority of researchers have not utilized it. This article provides a simple means of presenting multiple, concurrent, independent auditory events, using two or more different sound cards installed within a single computer. By enabling the presentation of more auditory events, we can hope to gain a better understanding of the cognitive and attentional processes operating under more complex and realistic scenes, such as that embodied by the cocktail party effect. The software requirements are Windows 98SR2/Me/NT4/2000/XP, Visual Basic 6.0, and DirectX 7.0 or above. The hardware requirements are a Pentium II, 128 MB RAM, and two or more different sound cards.

Colors and odors are associated; for instance, people typically match the smell of strawberries to the color pink or red. These associations are forms of crossmodal correspondences. Recently, there has been discussion about the extent to which these correspondences arise for structural reasons (i.e., an inherent mapping between color and odor), statistical reasons (i.e., covariance in experience), and/or semantically-mediated reasons (i.e., stemming from language). The present study probed this question by testing color-odor correspondences in 6 different cultural groups (Dutch, Netherlands-residing-Chinese, German, Malay, Malaysian-Chinese, and US residents), using the same set of 14 odors and asking participants to make congruent and incongruent color choices for each odor. We found consistent patterns in color choices for each odor within each culture, showing that participants were making non-random color-odor matches. We used representational dissimilarity analysis to probe for variations in the patterns of color-odor associations across cultures; we found that US and German participants had the most similar patterns of associations, followed by German and Malay participants. The largest group differences were between Malay and Netherlands-resident Chinese participants and between Dutch and Malaysian-Chinese participants. We conclude that culture plays a role in color-odor crossmodal associations, which likely arise, at least in part, through experience.

Although many studies have found similar cortical areas activated during the recognition of objects encoded through vision or touch, little is known about cortical areas involved in the crossmodal recognition of dynamic objects. Here, we investigated which cortical areas are involved in the recognition of moving objects and were specifically interested in whether motion areas are involved in the recognition of dynamic objects within and across sensory modalities. Prior to scanning, participants first learned to recognise a set of 12 novel objects, each presented either visually or haptically, and either moving or stationary. We then conducted fMRI whilst participants performed an old-new task with static images of learned or not-learned objects. We found the fusiform and right inferior frontal gyri more activated to within-modal visual than crossmodal object recognition. Our results also revealed increased activation in area hMT+, LOC and the middle occipital gyrus, in the right hemisphere only, for the objects learned as moving compared to the learned static objects, regardless of modality. We propose that the network of cortical areas involved in the recognition of dynamic objects is largely independent of modality and have important implications for understanding the neural substrates of multisensory dynamic object recognition.

PUBLISHED, In order to understand better the processes involved in the perception of shape through touch, someelement of control is required over the nature of the shape presented to the hand and the presentation timing. To that end, we have developed a cost-effective, computer-controlled apparatus for presenting haptic stimuli using active touch, known as a virtual haptic display (VHD). The operational principle behind this device is that it translates black and white visual images into topographic, 2-D taxel (tactile pixel) arrays, along the same principle using in Braille letters. These taxels are either elevated or depressed at any one time representing white and black pixel colors of the visual image, respectively. To feel the taxels, the participant places their fingers onto a carriage which can be moved over the surface of the device to reveal a virtual shape. We conducted two experiments and the results show that untrained participants are able to recognize different, simple and complex, shapes using this apparatus. The VHD apparatus is therefore ideal at presenting 2-Dshapes through touch alone. Moreover,this device and its supporting software can also be used for presenting computer-controlled stimuli in cross-modal experiments.

We investigated the extent to which intramodal visual perceptual grouping influences the multisensory integration (or grouping) of auditory and visual motion information. Participants discriminated the direction of motion of two sequentially presented sounds (moving leftward or rightward), while simultaneously trying to ignore a task-irrelevant visual apparent motion stream. The principles of perceptual grouping were used to vary the direction and extent of apparent motion within the irrelevant modality (vision). The results demonstrate that the multisensory integration of motion information can be modulated by the perceptual grouping taking place unimodally within vision, suggesting that unimodal perceptual grouping processes precede multisensory integration. The present study therefore illustrates how intramodal and crossmodal perceptual grouping processes interact to determine how the information in complex multisensory environments is parsed.

Previous studies found that performance in tactile or haptic spatial tasks improved when non-informative visual information was available, suggesting that vision provides a precise spatial frame to which tactile information is referred. Here, we explored whether another intrinsically spatial modality, audition, can also affect haptic recognition. In all experiments, blindfolded participants first learned a scene through touch and were subsequently required to recognise the scene. We found no effect on haptic performance when white noise stimuli were presented from specific locations Experiment 1. However, performance was significantly reduced by pure tone stimuli presented from the same locations Experiment 2, moreover, these tones disrupted recall but not encoding of the haptic scene Experiment 3. In Experiment 4, we found that spatial rather than non-spatial auditory information was required to affect haptic performance. Finally, in Experiment 5 we found no specific benefit for familiar sound cues over unfamiliar or no sounds on haptic spatial performance. Our findings suggest that, in contrast to vision, auditory information is unlikely to have sufficient spatial precision therefore disrupting the spatial representation of haptic information. Our results add to a growing body of evidence for multisensory influences in the perception of space.
