Спінальну анестезію (СА) виконано в 93 жінок при кесаревому розтині. Показаннями до операції слугували: хвороба оперованої матки, неспроможність рубця на матці, клінічно вузький таз, міопія високого ступеня, вторинна родова слабкість. Як місцевий анестетик для СА використовували 0,5% Лонгокаїн Хеві. Преінфузію виконували Гекотоном — 3–4 мл/кг. З метою оцінки впливу СА на показники центральної гемодинаміки і преінфузію вивчали центральну гемодинаміку, об’єм циркулюючої плазми, об’єм позаклітинної рідини, новонароджених оцінювали за шкалою Апгар. Було встановлено, що внутрішньовенна преінфузія Гекотоном за рахунок поєднання переваг колоїдно-гіперосмолярного компонента швидко викликає перерозподіл рідини з міжклітинного простору у внутрішньосудинний, надійно підтримує волемічний ефект, що дозволяє використовувати менший об’єм розчину для передопераційної підготовки при нейроаксiальнiй анестезії. Застосування Гекотону як преінфузії (3–4 мл/кг) стабілізує гемодинамiчний профіль після виконання СА. У 81 (87,1 %) випадку відзначалася відносно стабільна гемодинаміка, що не потребувала адреноміметичної підтримки, і тільки в 12 (12,9 %) — розвивалася виражена артеріальна гіпотензія, корекцію якої проводили фракційним введенням мезатону.

Background. The grain coat plays a major role in the development of rye cultivars with low levels of water-soluble pentosans (WSP). Grain coat thinness is a diagnostic trait for low WSP (arabinoxylans) content. To improve the technology of low-pentosan rye breeding, it becomes important to study the effect of changes in the anatomy of low-pentosan grains on morphological characteristics.Materials and methods. Grains with thin coats (transparent) were identified with the LFS-1 diaphanoscope in the populations of 7 commercial winter rye cultivars grown in Russian Federation. Anatomical and morphological features of seed coats were studied on thick- and thin-coated grains identified in the rye cultivars ‘Era’ and ‘Vyatka’. The thickness of grain coats and the aleurone layer were assessed according to L. N. Lyubarsky.Results and conclusions. In thin-coated rye grains, we found a reduction in the thickness of the pericarp and seed coats by 50–70% and in the aleurone layer by 32.1–39.6%, compared to thick-coated grains. With a constant cell size in “transparent” grains, a decrease in the thickness of the aleurone layer and coat occurs at the expense of the reduction in not only the cell walls, but also the intercellular space. The pericarp in the tissues of the second multicellular layer contains the bulk of the protective biologically passive WSP. It was proved that there were no significant changes in grain parameters, such as length, width and relative volume, depending on coat thinness. Significant differences were found in the 1000 grain weight. In “transparent” grains the index increased by 5.2–19.7%, compared with “nontransparent” ones.

Changes in the electrical properties of blood corpuscles that are experiencing mechanical stress modeled in vitro have been studied. An increase in the concentration of ATP molecules in the intercellular space in response to the mechanical effect of moving plasma layers both in the blood of healthy people and patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia is demonstrated. The surface potential of red blood cells and platelets becomes more positive both in the blood of healthy people and in leukemia patients. In contrast, the negative charge of lymphocytes in healthy people decreases in response to mechanical stress but increases in the blood of patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

This study investigated whether micron-sized microspheres can be used as dispersed scaffolds where anchorage-dependent cells can proliferate and survive in suspension culture. Aggregates of murine 3T3 cells in a non-adherent plate cultured remained viable for more than 2 weeks by the presence of 0.5 mg/ml fibroin microspheres. A nucleoside incorporation assay confirmed the proliferation of 3T3 cells in the aggregates only when cultured with microspheres. Under these conditions, the glucose consumption rate of 3T3 cells increased to 66.5 nmol day(−1) cell(−1). Histological analysis demonstrated that the intercellular space of cell aggregates was larger in cultures supplemented with 0.5 mg/ml microspheres than in non-supplemented cultures. The cell aggregates with microspheres also exhibited a reduced arrest in G1 phase. Transmission electron microscopy verified the presence of microspheres in the space between cells in aggregates. Fibroin microspheres maintained the viability and proliferability of 3T3 cells cultured under non-adherent conditions and thus can be used to develop viable suspensions of anchorage-dependent cells.

Highlights • SFU-assisted soybean soaking reduced time by 45.13% and increased SPC by 14.27%. • Ultrasonic field was monitored to explain its effect on soybean soaking. • Cell membrane was more permeable and beany flavor reduced in SFU group. • The structure of soybean protein was changed by SFU., Soybean soaking is important to the processing of bean products, however, restricted by the long soaking time. Herein, the soybean soaking was assisted by 60 kHz sweeping frequency ultrasound (SFU). Shortening mechanism of soaking time and physicochemical properties of soybeans were analyzed. Results showed that soaking temperature of 37 °C, ultrasonic power of 60% (144 W), and soaking time of 214 min were optimum SFU-assisted parameters. The soaking time was reduced by 45.13%, and soluble protein content increased by 14.27% after SFU. Based on analysis of acoustic signals, the maximum voltage amplitude of SFU increased with the increment of oscillation periods of cavitation bubbles, which enlarged the intercellular space and size of soybean, and cell membrane permeability was enhanced by 4.37%. Unpleasant beany flavor compounds were reduced by 16.37%–47.6%. Therefore, SFU could significantly improve the soaking efficiency of soybeans and provide a theoretical basis for the processing enterprises of soybean products.

The neurovascular unit (NVU) concept denotes cells and their communication mechanisms that autoregulate blood supply in the brain parenchyma. Over the past two decades, it has become clear that besides its primary function, NVU is involved in many important processes associated with maintaining brain health and that altering the proportion of the extracellular space plays a vital role in this. While biologists have studied the process of cells swelling or shrinking, the consequences of the NVU’s operation are not well understood. In addition to direct quantitative modeling of cellular processes in the NVU, there is room for developing a minimalistic mathematical description, similar to how computational neuroscience operates with very simple models of neurons, which, however, capture the main features of dynamics. In this work, we have developed a minimalistic model of cell volumes regulation in the NVU. We based our model on the FitzHugh–Nagumo model with noise excitation and supplemented it with a variable extracellular space volume. We show that such a model acquires new dynamic properties in comparison with the traditional neuron model. To validate our approach, we adjusted the parameters of the minimalistic model so that its behavior fits the dynamics computed using the high-dimensional quantitative and biophysically relevant model. The results show that our model correctly describes the change in cell volume and intercellular space in the NVU.

Fluid-filled biological cavities are ubiquitous, but their collective dynamics has remained largely unexplored from a physical perspective. Based on experimental observations in early embryos, we propose a model where a cavity forms through the coarsening of myriad of pressurized micrometric lumens, that interact by ion and fluid exchanges through the intercellular space. Performing extensive numerical simulations, we find that hydraulic fluxes lead to a self-similar coarsening of lumens in time, characterized by a robust dynamic scaling exponent. The collective dynamics is primarily controlled by hydraulic fluxes, which stem from lumen pressures differences and are dampened by water permeation through the membrane. Passive osmotic heterogeneities play, on the contrary, a minor role on cavity formation but active ion pumping can largely modify the coarsening dynamics: it prevents the lumen network from a collective collapse and gives rise to a novel coalescence-dominated regime exhibiting a distinct scaling law. Interestingly, we prove numerically that spatially biasing ion pumping may be sufficient to position the cavity, suggesting a novel mode of symmetry breaking to control tissue patterning. Providing generic testable predictions, our model forms a comprehensive theoretical basis for hydro-osmotic interaction between biological cavities, that shall find wide applications in embryo and tissue morphogenesis., Author summary The formation of a single biological cavity, or lumen, in tissues and embryos has been widely studied experimentally but the collective dynamics of multiple lumens has received much less attention. Here, we focus on a particular type of lumens, which are located at the adhesive side of cells and can therefore interact directly through the intercellular space, as recently observed in the very first stages of embryogenesis. We propose a generic model to describe the hydraulic and osmotic exchanges between lumens themselves, and with the surrounding cellular medium. Lumens are pressurized by a surface tension, which leads naturally to their coarsening into a single final cavity through hydraulic exchanges. With extensive numerical simulations and mean-field theory we predict that such coarsening dynamics follows a robust scaling law, that barely depends on concentration heterogeneities between lumens. On the contrary, active osmotic pumping largely influences the collective dynamics by favoring lumen coalescence and by biasing the position of the final cavity. Our theoretical work highlights the essential role of hydraulic and osmotic flows in morphogenesis.

Introduction We assessed if obesity perturbs the esophageal epithelial barrier function independent of promotion of gastroesophageal reflux (GER). Methods Thirty-eight participants were divided into 4 groups: Obesity-/GER-, Obesity+/GER-, Obesity-/GER+, and Obesity+/GER+. Esophageal intercellular space and desmosome density (structural integrity) and fluorescein leak (functional integrity) were measured. Results The Obesity+/GER- group demonstrated increased intercellular space, reduced desmosome density, and increased fluorescein leak compared with control subjects. These changes were similar but not additive to findings seen in Obesity-/GER + and Obesity+/GER+ patients. Discussion Central obesity impairs structural and functional integrity of the esophageal barrier independent of GER, likely predisposing to esophageal injury.

Mie's theory was used to develop a theoretical model to describe light propagation in apple tissue based on its microstructural properties. Taking into account the size distributions and volume fractions of intercellular space and starch granules, which are known in detail from previous studies, the model predicted a decrease in the effective scattering coefficient µ's of about 30 % during maturation. For the lateral change of µ's within a ripe apple, the model predicted an increase up to 35 % from core to skin. In both cases, the relative changes agree well with the experimental results obtained with spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) and an integrating sphere setup. Based on the model, at least 70 % of total µ's is attributable to intercellular space, which accordingly plays a dominant role in the temporal and lateral change of scattering. Using an extended Mie model for layered particles assuming a dense cell structure, a negligible effect on µ's was observed for the cell wall. However, for cells separated from the surrounding tissue by a narrow air gap (e.g. dissolution of the middle lamella), µ's was 20 % higher than for cells theoretically isolated in air. Lastly, it was shown that an increase in soluble solids content (SSC) during maturation by up to 15 % and the associated higher refractive index in the cells led to an increase in µ's by about 3-5 % compared to the case without considering SSC. Tricellular tight junctions (tTJs) are specialized tight junctions (TJs) that seal the intercellular space at tricellular contacts (TCs), where the vertices of three epithelial cells meet. Tricellulin and angulin family membrane proteins are known constituents of tTJs, but the molecular mechanism of tTJ formation remains elusive. Here, we investigated the roles of angulin-1 and tricellulin in tTJ formation in MDCK II cells by genome editing. Angulin-1-deficient cells lost the plasma membrane contact at TCs with impaired epithelial barrier function. The COOH-terminus of angulin-1 bound to the TJ scaffold protein ZO-1 and disruption of their interaction influenced the localization of claudins at TCs, but not the tricellular sealing. Strikingly, the plasma membrane contact at TCs was formed in tricellulin- or claudin-deficient cells. These findings demonstrate that angulin-1 is responsible for the plasma membrane seal at TCs independently of tricellulin and claudins.

Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola (Xoc) lead to the devastating rice bacterial diseases and have a very close genetic relationship. There are tissue-specificity differences between Xoo and Xoc, i.e., Xoo only proliferating in xylem vessels and Xoc spreading in intercellular space of mesophyll cell. But there is little known about the determinants of tissue-specificity between Xoo and Xoc. Here we show that Xoc can spread in the intercellular spaces of mesophyll cells to form streak lesions. But Xoo is restricted to growth in the intercellular spaces of mesophyll cells on the inoculation sites. In vivo, Xoc largely breaks the surface and inner structures of cell wall in mesophyll cells in comparison with Xoo. In vitro, Xoc strongly damages the cellulose filter paper in comparison with Xoo. These results suggest that the stronger cell wall-degradation ability of Xoc than that of Xoo may be directly determining the tissue-specificity.

The geometric characterization of the microstructure is required to model the micro level transport process inside the plant-based food material during thermal processing. However, the existing geometric construction methods are unable to consider the distinctive geometrical characteristics of cells and intercellular spaces during generation of the virtual microstructure. The main aim of this study is to develop a new method to build microstructure of the plant-based food materials with clear identification of cell and intercellular spaces. Granny smith and red delicious apple were taken as samples to implement and validate the proposed method. The virtual microstructure was generated from the scanning electron microscope image (SEM) of the apples. A new algorithm was developed based on the modified ellipse fitting method to generate the microstructure from microscopic images. Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) was used to classify the cells and the intercellular spaces. Statistical analysis was performed between the developed geometrical model and microscopic image to determine the accuracy of the proposed method. The area distribution of the microstructural model found in this study is significantly better than that found in the literature.

The epithelial basal lamina of the small intestine forms a felt-like sheet at the base of the epithelium. Previous studies have shown that the basal lamina has numerous fenestrations, which are produced by leukocytes penetrating through the basal lamina. In this study, we aimed to directly visualize fenestrations of the rat basal lamina in intestinal villi by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) after removal of the villous epithelium by osmium maceration and ultrasonic treatment. Structural changes in fenestrations were then investigated in relation to dietary conditions. SEM of these tissues revealed the presence of fenestrations in the villous epithelial basal lamina in all segments of the small intestine, although the number was the highest in the jejunum. The present study also showed that the number and size of fenestrations increased after feeding in the jejunum, whereas changes were unclear in the ileum. These findings suggested that the basal lamina fenestrations were changed through the dynamics of migrating leukocytes in dietary conditions and may also be related to the regulation of nutrient absorption, particularly as lipids are transported from the intercellular space of the epithelium to the lamina propria.

In medicine narcotic analgesics have long been used for therapeutic purposes, but their influence on the organs of the immune system is insufficiently studied. Aim of the work was the investigation of submicroscopic changes in the structural components of the thymus of white male rats in the dynamics of six weeks exposure of the nalbuphine to the body and one week after its abolition. Materials and methods. The study was conducted on 52 white male rats of reproductive age with an initial body weight of 140–150 g. The drug "Nalbuphine" was injected intramuscularly 1 time per day at 10–11 o’clock during 42 days, increasing the dose every 7 days. Experimental animals are divided into 8 groups: the first group – intact animals; opioid nalbuphine was daily injected intramuscularly at a dose of 8 mg/kg in the second group within 1 week; in the third group twithin 2 weeks nalbuphine dose increased to 15 mg/kg; in the fourth group within 3 weeks nalbuphine dose increased to 20 mg/kg; in the fifth group within 4 weeks nalbuphine dose increased to 25 mg/kg; in the sixth group within 5 weeks nalbuphine dose increased to 30 mg/kg; in the seventh group within 6 weeks nalbuphine dose increased to 35 mg/kg; in the eighth group material was taken one week after discontinuation of therapy. The material was collected in accordance with generally accepted rules. The slices were made on UMTP–6M ultramicrotome using diamond knife (DIATOM) and double-contrasted according to Reynolds and with uranyl acetate. The thymus sections were investigated using an electronic TEM–100 transmissive microscope. The photo documentation of studied material was carried out using SONY–H9 digital camera. Results. After one week of experiment, the intercellular space is expanded. Two weeks later, the contours of thymocyte nuclei are uneven, blurred. Three to four weeks there are destructive degenerative changes of thymocytes and epithelial reticular cells. Five to six weeks later, part of thymocytes and epithelial reticular cells have picnotic osmiofilic nuclei, an increase in the number of destructively altered thymocytes, epithelial reticular cells and macrophages with picnotial nuclei and in the state of apoptosis. One week after the discontinuation of nalbuphine, there are numerous destructively altered thymocytes and epithelial reticular cells and cells in the state of apoptosis, the nuclear membrane and plasmalemma have been damaged in some places. Conclusions. With a short-term effect of nalbuphine on the body for 2 weeks, there are no significant structural changes in the thymus. Under the action of nalbuphine for 3-4 weeks there are destructive-degenerative changes of the structural components of the thymus. With prolonged action of nalbuphine within 5-6 weeks, deep destructive degenerative changes occur, which are not restored even a week after discontinuation of the drug.

The aim of this study was to describe patterns of histopathological recognition of the cresty neck in Horses in Spain. A total of 250 horses were studied in Andalusia and Extremadura, Spain. Seventy-six percent of horses present cresty neck. The damage of the cresty neck in horses was categorized as Grade 0 - Muscle fibers are observed, no fat vacuoles are observed (24% of the horses). Grade 1 – Scarce adipose deposit was observed. An unaltered muscle tissue is observed (21% of the horses). Grade 2 - fat vacuoles are evident in muscle tissue intermyofibrillar space and prone to coalescence (23% of the horses). Grade 3 - Abundant fat vacuoles in the intermyofibrillar space, with tendency to coalesce, and low fat infiltration in muscle tissue (moderate lipomatosis) (16% of the horses). Grade 4 - Abundant fat vacuoles in the intermyofibrillar space, with tendency to coalesce, and fatty infiltration in muscle tissue (marked lipomatosis) (8% of the horses). Grade 5 - Only fat vacuoles are observed, without muscle tissue (severe lipomatosis) (8% of the horses). The results for desmin antibody (1: 100 dilution) was positive (++) in grades 0-2, and negative (-) in grades 3-5. These results suggest that as fat/lipomatosis infiltration increases (progresses in grades 3, 4 and 5), the intercellular space (intermyofibrillar) increases and therefore the cell cytoskeleton is lost, with loss of the bands Z, so the negative response to this antibody. In conclusion, we describe histopathological pattern recognition of cresty neck in horses in Spain.

“Sasam (沙參)” is a crude drug that is defined in the in Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia as the root of Adenophora triphylla var. japonica (Regel.) Hara or A. stricta Miq., Campanulaceae. The dried roots of the Adenophora spp. are available in markets, and the roots of various species are similar to each other in shape, making it difficult to distinguish one from another using only the outer morphological appearance. Therefore, the present study aimed to establish quality control parameters for pharmacognostic evaluation and differentiation of five Adenophora species and two varieties grown in Korea. Inner morphological evaluation of the root of these plants was accomplished and preliminary chemical analysis was performed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry profiling. As a result, significant differences among samples were found in anatomical characteristics such as number and thickness of cork layer, existence of stone cell in cork layer, frequency of vessels, and area of intercellular space. Significant differences were found among the samples in the content of three components including shashenoside I and a new alkyl glycoside, adenophoroside I. These findings could provide the scientific criteria for the proper identification and establishment of standards for the use of “Sasam”. Contains fulltext : 206084.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Closed access) The pathway of ion supply from the source to the site of bone deposition in vertebrates is thought to involve transport through the vasculature, followed by ion concentration in osteoblasts. The cells deposit a precursor mineral phase in vesicles, which are then exocytosed into the extracellular matrix. We observed that the entire skeleton of zebrafish larvae, is labelled within minutes after injection of calcein or FITC-dextran into the blood. This raised the possibility that there is an additional pathway of solute transport that can account for the rapid labelling. We used cryo-FIB-SEM serial block face imaging to reconstruct at high resolution the 3D ultrastructure of the caudal tail of the zebrafish larva. This reconstruction clearly shows that there is a continuous intercellular pathway from the artery to the forming bone, and from the forming bone to the vein. Fluorescence light microscopy shows that calcein and FITC-dextran form a reticulate network pattern in this tissue, which we attribute to the dye being present in the intercellular space. We conclude that this intercellular continuous space may be a supply route for ions, mineral and other solute or particulate material to the fast forming bone.

To more easily understand the function of a protein called lipocalin, samples from ’Micro-Tom’ tomatoes and samples of the pericarp portion of SlTIL1, SlTIL2, and SlCHL over-expressed fruit was analyzed using Technovit 7100 (Heraeus Kulzer, Wehrheim, Germany). The results showed that the structure and cells of the pericarp in its fruit in the breaker phase of the over-expressed SlTILs and SlCHL showed that most of the pericarp cells were greatly expanded in light conditions 1 and light conditions 2 when compared to controls. Exocarp and mesocarp in controls have an intercellular space, but this is not found in the intercellular space in SlTILs and SlCHL pericarp cells that are over-expressed. SlTILs and SlCHL cell structure of vascular bundles which is widely shows a wider (tenuous) cell than a control vascular bundle cell. These results indicate that cells in SlTILs and SlCHL which are over-expressed are more rapidly developing than wild-type ‘Micro-Tom’ tomatoes as controls.

This study analyzed cone density, cone mosaic, and fundus autofluorescence (FAF) images in patients with focal laser-treated central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Observational case series. Forty-two eyes of 21 patients with unilateral treated CSC and bilateral best-corrected visual acuity of 1.0 (decimal fraction) were included. FAF and cone mosaic images were obtained in all patients with an adaptive optics fundus camera. Densities were recorded at 20 points throughout the macula, and choroidal thicknesses were measured. Mean choroidal thicknesses were 419.95 ± 110.33 μm in normal eyes, 459.09 ± 90.07 μm in eyes with active CSC, and 438.61 ± 107.57 μm in treated eyes. The highest density of cones in healthy eyes was 38146 cones/mm2, with a 5.66-μm intercellular space (IS), at 700 μm temporal to the center. In eyes with treated CSC, the highest density was 32749 cones/mm2, with a 6.13-μm IS, at 500 μm nasal to the center. In all quadrants, median values of maximum cone density were significantly higher in healthy eyes (P = .02, P = .003, P = .0001, and P = .001). Three types of lesions were identified on FAF and were correlated with those on cone mosaic images. Strong correlations were detected between the presence of hypoautofluorescent lesions on the first FAF image and a greater difference between maximum values of photoreceptor density (r 2 = 0.46, P = .03), as well as between the presence of hypoautofluorescent lesions and the duration of pathology (r 2 = 0.68, P

Aquaporin-8 (AQP8) is a water channel protein expressed exclusively in granulosa cells (GCs) in mouse ovary. Our previous studies of AQP8-deficient (AQP8-/-) mice demonstrated that AQP8 participates in folliculogenesis, including in the formation of follicles, ovulation, and atresia. However, its physiological function in formation of the antral follicle is still largely unknown. In the present study, we observed significantly increased numbers of antral follicles in AQP8-/- ovaries as well as significantly increased follicular antrum formation in in vitro 3D culture of AQP8-/- follicles. Functional detection of AQP8-/- GCs indicated that cell proliferation is impaired with FSH treatment, and wound healing and Transwell migration are also impaired with or without FSH treatment, compared with that in WT. However, the biosynthesis of estradiol and progesterone as well as the mRNA levels of key steroidogenic enzyme genes (CYP19A1 and StAR) in AQP8-/- GCs did not change, even with addition of FSH and/or testosterone. In order to estimate the influence of the impaired proliferation and migration on the density of GC mass, preantral follicles were injected with FITC-dextran, which distributes only in the intercellular space, and analyzed by confocal microscopy. The micrographs showed significantly higher transmission of fluorescence in AQP8-/- follicles, suggesting increased intercellular space of GCs. Based on this evidence, we concluded that AQP8 deficiency leads to increased formation of follicular antra in vivo and in vitro, and the mechanism may be associated with increased intercellular space of GCs, which may be caused by defective proliferation and migration of GCs. This study may offer new insight into the molecular mechanisms of the formation of follicular antrum.

Magnetotactic bacteria, for the most part, are free-living, motile, unicellular prokaryotes that inhabit almost all marine and freshwater environments. One notable exception to the unicellular mode, however, are the magnetotactic multicellular prokaryotes. These morphologically unique prokaryotes (e.g., Candidatus Magnetoglobus multicellularis) are motile aggregates of 20–40 genetically identical, Gram-negative cells organised as a sphere (or ovoid in shape) and only motile as a unit. No specific close physical association between magnetotactic bacteria and non-magnetotactic microorganisms has ever been reported. Here, using culture-independent approaches, we show an unusual association between the spherical magnetotactic multicellular prokaryote Ca. Magnetoglobus multicellularis and Pseudoalteromonas species in environmental sediment and water samples collected from the Araruama Lagoon in Brazil. Cells of Pseudoalteromonas species were observed to be physically attached to the surface and, notably, even in the intercellular space of these spherical magnetotactic multicellular prokaryotes. An attempt to correlate the frequency of association between Pseudoalteromonas and magnetotactic multicellular prokaryotes with sediment depth was made but only a slight decrease in the number of Pseudoalteromonas cells per magnetotactic multicellular prokaryote was observed with increasing depth. Similar observations were made with magnetotactic multicellular prokaryotes from another Brazilian Lagoon (Rodrigo de Freitas) and the putative symbiont/parasite was detected. Although our results suggest some sort of specificity in the relationship between these prokaryotes, the precise nature of this association remains unclear.

Internal concentration of CO2 and O2 is influenced by intercellular space volume (Vin). Vin, which located inside fruit, is thought to be a diffusion pathway through plant organs to supply adequate O2 for respiration and allow diffusion of CO2. This indicates that Vin is an important factor to be known. Unfortunately, measuring of Vin is time consuming. Therefore, an aim of present study is to determine intercellular space volume (Vin) of citrus fruits using multiple linear regression based on physical measurements such as mass (m), volume 1 as Archimedes principle (Vt), volume 2 as sphere (Vs), vertical dimension diameter (vd), horizontal dimension diameter 1 (hd1), horizontal dimension diameter 2 (hd2) and real density (Pt). Sample was physically measured to obtain its mass, diameters, volumes, and real density. The values of physical measurements were used to predict Vin by using four prediction models. Multiple regression was engaged to develop each category model. The model in equation (Vin = 0.234???0.932m+0.993Vt) had the highest score in determination coefficient (R2=0.998) and the lowest in root mean squared error (RMSE=1.533), which implied the best equation to determine Vin.

A mathematical model of mass transfer from lamina (plant leaf) into the extractant is constructed considering its anatomical organization in particular the existence of cellular and intercellular space. Its solution allows to predict kinetics of the extraction process of the whole leaves at its implementation in practice. Побудовано математичну модель масовіддачі від пластини листка у екстрагент враховуючи анатомічні особливості рослинної сировини, а саме наявність клітинного та міжклітинного середовища. Розв‘язання такої задачі дало можливість прогнозувати кінетику процесу екстрагування неподрібненого листя при реалізації її на практиці.

A new pretreatment method using room-temperature ionic liquid (IL) was proposed for observing wood specimens in scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A variety of concentrations were examined for ethanol solution of the IL, [Emim][MePO3Me], to determine an optimal pretreatment procedure. It was concluded that 10% ethanol solution of the IL was the most adequate to acquire good SEM images. Using the procedure optimized, SEM images were taken for typical anatomical types of modern soft and hardwood species and archeological wood. SEM images taken were sufficiently good in observing wood cells. The pretreatment method was also effective to archeological wood dated ca. 1600 years ago. It was thus concluded that the method developed in this study is more useful than those conventionally used. Additionally, pretreatment at the high temperature was performed to confirm morphological changes in softwood. Deformation of latewood cells (tracheids) was occurred by treating with undiluted IL at the high temperature of 50°C, probably due to higher accessibility of the IL into intercellular space. Nonetheless, it was confirmed that this happens under far more extreme conditions than our proposed method.

Cerebral edema contributes significantly to the morbidity and mortality associated with many common neurologic conditions. Clinically, a diagnostic tool that can be used to monitor cerebral edema in real-time and differentiate between different types of cerebral edema is urgently needed. Because there are differences in electrical impedance between normal cortical tissue and cerebral edema tissue, electrical impedance tomography (EIT) can potentially be used to detect cerebral edema. Accurate recording of the electrical impedance properties of cerebral edema tissue at different time points is important when detecting cerebral edema with EIT. In this study, a rat cerebral edema model was established; then, following the onset of ischemic brain injury, variation in the electrical impedance of cerebral edema was measured at different time points within a 24-hour period and the corresponding morphologic variation was analyzed. After the first six hours, following the onset of ischemic brain injury, the resistivity of brain tissue increased (p < 0.05); during this period, brain cell volume increased (p < 0.05) and the intercellular space decreased (p < 0.05) (behaving like cytotoxic cerebral edema). From 6 to 24 hours, the resistivity of brain tissue decreased; during this time, brain cell volume unchanged (p > 0.05) while intercellular space increased (p < 0.05) (behaving like vasogenic cerebral edema). These findings support the notion that EIT can be used to monitor the development of cerebral edema in real-time and differentiate between different types of brain edema.

The volume of intercellular spaces in leaves at various stages of water saturation was determined by method of Czerski (1964, 1968). The investigation were performed with the following plant species: Vicia faba L., Nicotiana tabacum L. var. rustica, Solarium tuberosum L. var. Flisak, Helichrysum bracteatum Wild., Bmssica napus L. var. oleifera, Beta vulgaris L. var. saccharifera.

The effect of low frequency ultrasound (LFU) pretreatment prior to intermediate-wave infrared radiation (IW-IR) drying on water migration and quality attributes of carrot slices was investigated in this study. Results showed that the vacuole water of LFU pretreated carrot samples decreased, while the cytoplasm and intercellular space water increased by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. In addition, LFU pretreatment caused the disruption of cell structures and formation of micro-channels, resulting in significant (p0.05) decrease of drying time required. The IW-IR dried carrot slices with LFU pretreatment showed higher β-carotene content and rehydration ratio in comparison with control samples. The color parameters of ultrasound pretreated dried carrot slices after dehydration were closer to the raw carrot samples. The results of electronic nose showed that the aromatic and volatile organic compounds of dried carrot increased by sonicated pretreatment, while the nitrogen oxides decreased, indicating that LFU can improve the flavor of dried carrot slices.

Summary Background The diagnostic corroboration of the relationship between gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and chronic cough remains challenging. Aims To compare oesophageal mucosal intercellular space diameter (ISD) in children with GERD, children with gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER)-related cough (GrC) and a control group, and to explore the relationship between baseline impedance levels and dilated ISD in children with GER-related cough. Methods Forty children with GERD, 15 children with GrC and 12 controls prospectively underwent oesophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with oesophageal biopsies taken 2–3 cm above squamocolumnar junction. ISD were quantified using transmission electron microscopy. Impedance-pH monitoring with evaluation of baseline impedance in the most distal impedance channel was performed in both patient groups.
