Conversational repair has been proposed as a universal system for maintaining mutual understanding during social interactions. The repair system has been studied extensively in offline synchronous interactions (e.g., face-to-face, phone calls) and has been observed across cultures and languages. However, the prevalence of conversational repairs is unclear in online asynchronous text-based interactions. Online interactions are increasingly important for public deliberation, and it is therefore important to understand how conversational repairs manifest in different online contexts. To address this gap, we conducted two analyses of Other-initiated repairs in 25 English-language Reddit communities (subreddits), covering a diverse range of topics and communication norms. Analysis 1 examines the frequency of repair initiations across subreddits, finding them to be widespread (in every subreddit) and frequent (58.48% of interactions experience a repair initiation). Analysis 2 examines the emergence of repairs, finding that a repair initiation becomes increasingly likely the longer a comments thread progresses (Median time-to-repair = 6 turns). These results suggest that the prevalence and emergence of repair initiations in online interactions are comparable to offline contexts. However, we also find 44.80% of initiations receive no reply, precluding the possibility of a repair completion. Thus, conservatively, nearly half of the repair initiations in our data went uncompleted. This suggests that the online medium alters the way initiations are completed compared to offline interactions. We discuss the implications of this finding and avenues for future research. This study explores the dynamics of student interaction networks within an online asynchronous discussion forum, focusing on both whole group discussions and subgroup interactions distinguished by the Louvain algorithm, a renowned community detection method. Analyzing 2481 posts from 154 undergraduate students across three sections of a communications course centered on discussions about movie clips or social phenomena to enhance media literacy, this research aims to interpret the interaction patterns in these virtual spaces. Traditional methods of group formation, such as teacher intervention and self-selection, often fail to create balanced and effective groups, especially in large online courses. The Louvain algorithm, known for its efficiency in modularity optimization, identifies clusters based on actual student interaction patterns. By leveraging both global and local network analyses, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of interaction structures. The global network analysis offers a macro view of overall interaction structures, revealing diverse patterns despite identical course designs, suggesting the influence of unique group dynamics. The local analysis, focusing on the intricacies of node and edge connections, underscores that the Louvain algorithm's classifications correlate with heightened cohesiveness and collaborative potential. The results indicate that algorithmically detected groups exhibit strong internal communication and cohesiveness, as evidenced by high clustering coefficients, density values, and weighted degrees. These findings underscore the potential of network analysis to optimize online student interactions, providing valuable insights for refining educational design to promote student engagement and collaborative problem-solving. Introduction: Rates of prenatal cannabis use (PCU) have increased in recent years. Despite evidence of developmental health consequences to offspring and birthing person, there has been a reduction in the perception of PCU-related harms. Due to the stigma and risk of legal consequences associated with disclosing PCU, individuals are often cautious to seek information from their healthcare providers. Thus, pregnant people are more likely to seek information from anonymous sources, such as online support forums. Information garnered from these anonymous online forums can shed light on the patterns and motives for cannabis use among this population. These insights can help to better inform prevention efforts aimed at reducing potential harms of PCU and improve intervention efforts. Methods: Posts (N = 120) from an online pro-cannabis pregnancy forum called "Ganja Mamas" on WhattoExpect.com were randomly selected and analyzed if they covered topics related to PCU. A qualitative coding structure based on the existing PCU literature was created and refined to include other emergent topics. The coding structure was used to apply thematic analysis to posts; associated codes were grouped into themes. Codes specific to symptom management for physical and mental health were subsequently subjected to further conceptual analysis for the current study. Results: Four themes related to symptom management during pregnancy were identified: 1) cannabis use and impacts of use for a variety of mental health symptoms, including depression and anxiety; 2) cannabis use for physical health symptoms and conditions, such as nausea and pain; 3) use of cannabis to achieve homeostasis and manage stress; 4) decision-making about using cannabis for symptom management, such as using cannabis instead of prescription medications. Most discussions in this pro-cannabis forum reflected perceptions that cannabis was effective in treating the conditions for which it was used; however, limitations of cannabis' efficacy were also mentioned. Discussion: There is need for reduced stigma and open communication between pregnant persons who use cannabis and their providers in discussing how to manage their mental and physical health symptoms. Understanding the various symptoms for which individuals use cannabis during pregnancy to self-treat can inform these conversations and the expansion of harm reduction strategies. Individuals in a heightened state of suicidal desire often utilize online mental health forums for support. What we know about support comes predominately from forumuser research and their experiences and perspectives. Little research has considered the supportive role professional moderators' play in such situations, with no research exploring how professional moderators keep forum-users safe online. The aim of this study was to explore the in-situ text-based practices that professional moderators employ when they are keeping forum-users safe online. Using Conversation Analysis, 34 publicly available forum posts and corresponding emails between forum-users in a heightened state of suicidal desire (at-risk users), non-suicidal forum-users, and professional moderators were analyzed. Results indicate that professional moderators and forum-users work alongside each other to keep at-risk users safe online. They do this by moderators aligning to risk presentations with forum-users affiliating to at-risk users relational needs. Previous research found professional moderators wanted to use more of their counselling skills in such situations. However, based on the findings of this study moderators do not need to do more. Their current practices appear to keep forum-users safe at that moment when they are most at risk. These practices perhaps go unrecognized as skillful as they draw upon the intersubjectivity of safety rather than on individual user risk. Future research needs to examine the safety interactions that occur between forum-users and moderators to enable a better understanding of online spaces as suicide prevention places. The log files of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) reveal useful information that can help interpret student behavior. In this study, we focus on student performance based on their access to course resources and the grades they achieve. We define states as the Moodle resources and quiz grades for each student ID, considering participation in resources such as wikis and forums. We use efficient Hidden Markov Models to interpret the abundance of information provided in the Moodle log files. The transitions among certain resources for each student or groups of students are determined as behaviors. Other studies employ Machine Learning and Pattern Classification algorithms to recognize these behaviors. As an example, we visualize these transitions for individual learners. Additionally, we have created row and column charts to present our findings in a comprehensible manner. For implementing the proposed methodology, we use the R programming language. In this paper, we analyze the Reddit social network with the goal of identifying "highly interconnected" subreddits. Intuitively, a subreddit is highly interconnected if the users in the subreddit interact a lot with users from other subreddits in the Reddit ecosystem. To identify the highly interconnected subreddits, we used the communication patterns of the users on the Reddit platform. We definde an "interconnectedness score" that was obtained from user interactions across subreddits. This score was used to identify the highly interconnected subreddits. We also leveraged the interactions among users within the subreddits to identify implicit leader–follower relationships within them. Intuitively, an implicit leader in a subreddit is someone who receives a lot of attention from other users, who are the followers. We inferred the implicit leaders using only the responses they received on their posts from other users in the subreddit. Finally, we studied the role played by these implicit leaders within the interconnected subreddits using the idea of a "leaderness score". For the analysis, we used data obtained from Reddit in 2022 with a custom-built crawler. We analyzed a total of 125,000 subreddits for this work and identified the group of highly interconnected subreddits using the idea of the interconnectedness score. We manually evaluated the content of the posts on the identified interconnected subreddits in order to understand the nature of these subreddits. Our analysis showed that the highly interconnected subreddits discuss content considered to be "not safe/suitable for work" (NSFW). We also observed that though these subreddits were highly interconnected among themselves, they were sparsely connected with other non-NSFW subreddits. Furthermore, we found that the implicit leaders in these subreddits drove majority of the conversations in these groups. These results are socially significant as they can be used to make online social networks safe for the underage population. Thus, our results can be used for enforcing age-based restrictions on access to these NSFW subreddits. Finally, our results also open up the possibility of moderating the content on these subreddits by enforcing content moderation rules on the implicit leaders who drive the conversation in these groups. Finally, though these results are specific to Reddit, the insights obtained from this analysis can be used for analyzing other large-scale online social networks with similar goals to this study. People who experience gambling harms commonly experience stigmatisation, which is detrimental to psychological wellbeing, and a significant barrier to help-seeking. While there have been efforts to challenge stigmatisation, there is little empirical evidence available to inform such initiatives. To address this gap in knowledge, we conducted a thematic analysis of naturalistic data in the form of posts made on online support forums by people with experience of gambling-related harm, in order to understand how they are stigmatised, and to identify barriers to help-seeking. Five main themes were identified: (a) beliefs about the nature and origin of gambling addiction, which related to participants' beliefs about causes of gambling harm and cognitions about the nature of addiction; (b) self-stigma, which encompassed the frequent and substantial incidences of self-stigma; (c) anticipated stigma, which described the stigma and discrimination people expected to face because of their gambling harm; (d) stigmatising other people who experience gambling harm, which describes the ways in which some people who experienced gambling harms stigmatised other people who experienced gambling harms; and (e) experienced stigma and discrimination, which encompassed the experienced stigmatisation people encountered. Experiences discussed/described within the forums were developed into a timeline of gambling harms which was cyclical in nature and involved six stages: onset, concealment of problems, crisis point, disclosure of problems, recurrence of harms (sometimes termed 'relapse') and recovery. The study highlights the impact of societal stigma on individuals' self-perception and interactions, particularly emphasising the challenges experienced during relapse periods, which heighten stigma and distress. Objective Methods Results Significance This study was undertaken to explore the experiences and concerns of people living with epilepsy by analyzing discussions in an online epilepsy community, using large language models (LLMs) to identify themes, demographic patterns, and associations with emotional distress, substance use, and suicidal ideation.We analyzed 56 970 posts and responses to them from 21 906 users on the epilepsy forum (subreddit) of Reddit and 768 504 posts from the same users in other subreddits, between 2010 and 2023. LLMs, validated against human labeling, were used to identify 23 recurring themes, assess demographic differences, and examine cross‐posting to depression‐ and suicide‐related subreddits. Hazard ratios (HRs) were calculated to assess the association between specific themes and activity in mental health forums.Prominent topics included seizure descriptions, medication management, stigma, drug and alcohol use, and emotional well‐being. The posts on topics less likely to be discussed in clinical settings had the highest engagement. Younger users focused on stigma and emotional issues, whereas older users discussed medical treatments. Posts about emotional distress (HR = 1.3), postictal state (HR = 1.4), surgical treatment (HR = .7), and work challenges (HR = 1.6) predicted activity in a subreddit associated with suicidal ideation, whereas emotional distress (HR = 1.5), surgical treatment (HR = .6), and stigma (HR = 1.3) predicted activity in the depression subreddit. Substance use discussions showed a temporal pattern of association with seizure descriptions, implying possible opportunities for intervention.LLM analysis of online epilepsy communities provides novel insights into patient concerns often overlooked in clinical settings. Artificial intelligence (AI) has experienced exponential growth in recent years, profoundly transforming various aspects of life, particularly in education. As a team of educational technology innovators, we have developed a series of generative AI features within our social learning management system, CourseNetworking, to boost student engagement in online discussions and enhance instructor efficiency. This article introduces three key features: automated hashtagging, automated post reflection, and AI-driven quiz question generation. We examine the goals and technical implementation of each feature, present solutions to challenges encountered during development and deployment, and share the best practices we have accumulated. Additionally, we outline our plans for future advancements. This paper seeks to foster understanding and collaboration among developers, educators, institutional leaders, and researchers, with the aim of using AI technology to improve educational products and services, ultimately elevating learning experiences and outcomes. Since its discovery as one of the main components of cannabis and its affinity towards the cannabinoid receptor CB1, serving as a means to exert its psychoactivity, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) has inspired medicinal chemists throughout history to create more potent derivatives. Initially, the goal was to synthesize chemical probes for investigating the molecular mechanisms behind the pharmacology of Δ9-THC and finding potential medical applications. The unintended consequence of this noble intent has been the proliferation of these compounds for recreational use. This review comprehensively covers the most exhaustive number of THC-like cannabinoids circulating on the recreational market. It provides information on the chemistry, synthesis, pharmacology, analytical assessment, and experiences related to the psychoactive effects reported by recreational users on online forums. Some of these compounds can be found in natural cannabis, albeit in trace amounts, while others are entirely artificial. Moreover, to circumvent legal issues, many manufacturers resort to semi-synthetic processes starting from legal products extracted from hemp, such as cannabidiol (CBD). Despite the aim to encompass all known THC-like molecules, new species emerge on the drug users' pipeline each month. Beyond posing a significantly high public health risk due to unpredictable and unknown side effects, scientific research consistently lags behind the rapidly evolving recreational market. Online medical forums have emerged as vital platforms for patients to share their experiences and seek advice, providing a valuable, cost-effective source of feedback for medical service management. This feedback not only measures patient satisfaction and improves health service quality but also offers crucial insights into the effectiveness of medical treatments, pain management strategies, and alternative therapies. This study systematically identifies and categorizes key aspects of patient experiences, emphasizing both positive and negative sentiments expressed in their narratives. We collected a dataset of approximately 15,000 entries from various sections of the widely used medical forum, patient.info. Our innovative approach integrates content analysis with aspect-based sentiment analysis, deep learning techniques, and a large language model (LLM) to analyze these data. Our methodology is designed to uncover a wide range of aspect types reflected in patient feedback. The analysis revealed seven distinct aspect types prevalent in the feedback, demonstrating that deep learning models can effectively predict these aspect types and their corresponding sentiment values. Notably, the LLM with few-shot learning outperformed other models. Our findings enhance the understanding of patient experiences in online forums and underscore the utility of advanced analytical techniques in extracting meaningful insights from unstructured patient feedback, offering valuable implications for healthcare providers and medical service management. The article discusses the shift to virtual pediatric pulmonary fellowship interviews since 2020, with concerns raised about the limitations of virtual interactions compared to in-person interviews. A study conducted by the Pediatric Pulmonary Training Directors Association (PEPTDA) explored a hybrid model that allows applicants to choose between in-person and virtual interviews. Results showed that both trainees and program directors favored a hybrid model, with considerations for factors influencing interview format preferences. The structure and delivery of preclerkship undergraduate medical education has changed significantly over the past decade. Asynchronous didactic lectures are now routinely paired with in-person sessions that emphasize active and small-group learning. In this environment, educators tasked with teaching pulmonary medicine should be familiar with the growing number of educational technologies that can transform how and where content is delivered to students. In this Perspective, we review how educational technologies have been integrated into the preclerkship pulmonary module at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. We hope our experience provides a road map for the integration of these tools in other educational settings. We cover how educational technology can facilitate asynchronous learning (prerecorded lectures and online message boards) as well as active in-person learning (audience response systems and technology-enhanced learning spaces). This article sheds light on the significant yet nuanced roles of shame and guilt in influencing moral behaviour, a phenomenon that became particularly prominent during the COVID-19 pandemic with the community's heightened desire to be seen as moral. These emotions are central to human interactions, and the question of how they are conveyed linguistically is a vast and important one. Our study contributes to this area by analysing the discourses around shame and guilt in English and Japanese online forums, focusing on the terms shame , guilt , haji ('shame') and zaiakukan ('guilt'). We utilise a mix of corpus-based methods and natural language processing tools, including word embeddings, to examine the contexts of these emotion terms and identify semantically similar expressions. Our findings indicate both overlaps and distinct differences in the semantic landscapes of shame and guilt within and across the two languages, highlighting nuanced ways in which these emotions are expressed and distinguished. This investigation provides insights into the complex dynamics between emotion words and the internal states they denote, suggesting avenues for further research in this linguistically rich area. Involuntary celibates (incels) are individuals who feel alienated from society because of their perceived inability to attract women. They share a narrative which valorises violence as a means to restructure society according to misogynistic ideals. Since promoting a radical misogynistic ideology through violence is legally prohibited and socially unacceptable, it is necessary for incels to hide out online where virtual mediums promise anonymity. Virtual relationality (VR) allowed unorganised individuals with a shared grievance against mainstream societal values to develop into a secretive collective. VR means that individuals connect in chatrooms and internet forums where they exchange interpretations of a narrative which presents their social situation as oppressive and dehumanising. They blame 'modernist' values and social practices for their ills and share perspectives of how they should interact with the world. These perspectives frequently justify or condone acts of physical violence. Relating in the virtual world gave these individuals' shared grievances a sense of coherence and allowed for an amplification of the influence of their violent acts by affirming the value of extremist ideas. VR turned individuals without consistent preferences and a unifying organisational medium into a 'hydra' with a felt global presence. The virtual nature of incels complicates responses by 1) enabling the collective to have global reach, 2) allowing it to function without an organised body or institutional structures, 3) making it difficult to identify individual incels, and 4) making it difficult to tell when incels pose a genuine security threat. Background: Anti-racism is part of the medical professional ethos. Nevertheless, racism pervades medicine on individual, institutional, and structural levels. The concept of habitus helps to understand deficiencies in enacting anti-racism in practice. We use a habitus-based framework to analyse how medical students in Germany deal with the topic of racism. The research questions are: What are medical students' understandings of racism? How do they deal with the topic in discussions? What difficulties do they face in such discussions? Methods: In a qualitative-explorative research design, we conducted six online group discussions with 32 medical students from medical schools all over Germany. Data analysis combined qualitative methods from thematic qualitative content analysis and the documentary method. Results: We identified five typical ways of dealing with the topic of racism in discussions. The first one ('scientistic') orientates action towards the idea of medicine as an objective science, justifies the use of racial categories as scientific, and defines racism based on intention. The second ('pragmatic') orientates action towards tacit rules of clinical practice, justifies the use of racialised categories as practical and defines racism as an interpersonal problem. The third ('subjectivist') lacks a clear orientation of action for dealing with the topic of racism and instead displays uncertainty and subjectivism in understanding racialised categorisations as well as racism. The fourth ('interculturalist') orientates action towards an ideal of intercultural exchange, understands racialised categorisations as representing cultural differences and interprets racism as prejudice against cultures. The fifth ('critical') orientates action towards sociological scholarship, understands racialised categorisations as social constructs and views racism as a structural problem. Conclusion: The results presented help to understand preconditions of enacting anti-racism in medicine and point to difficulties and learning needs. Objectives: In palliative care, it is important for family caregivers to spend time with and care for the patient, and to receive (in)formal support. These elements were compromised during the Covid-19-pandemic. This study investigates what family caregivers of non-Covid-19-patients in the palliative phase shared online during the first wave of the pandemic, and what their communicative intentions were with posting online. Methods: To investigate what family caregivers shared online, a reflexive thematic analysis was performed on online newspaper articles and posts on Twitter, Facebook and online forums. To investigate family caregivers' communicative intentions with social media posts, content analysis was conducted guided by Speech Act Theory. Results: In total, 412 posts and articles were included, the majority being Tweets (86.7%). Four themes were constructed: 1) 'Being out of touch', 2) 'Fear, worries and uncertainties, 3) 'Disbelief, anger and resistance', and 4) 'Understanding, acceptance and gratitude'. Family caregivers felt overwhelmed with anger, sadness and anxiety, yet some expressing milder or positive attitudes towards the new circumstances. Family caregivers mostly posted online to share their personal experiences and emotions, and to express their opinions about the restrictions. Conclusions: The pandemic had distinct implications for family caregivers of non-Covid-19-patients in the palliative phase. In future similar circumstances, restrictions should be tailored to individual conditions and interventions should be in place to facilitate contact between patients, family caregivers and healthcare professionals and to support family caregivers. Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, sex work in the Netherlands was forbidden for many months, yet most sex workers were not eligible for governmental financial support. Therefore, many were forced to continue working illegally, likely leading to unsafe work conditions. We determined sex workers' experienced violence and police reporting during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Data were collected through an online, anonymous survey (N = 173) covering background characteristics, the financial impact of the COVID-19 control measures, experienced sexual and/or physical violence, and police reporting in relation to experienced violence in 2021. We analyzed the data through descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression analysis. Contextualization was achieved through online focus group discussions (FGDs; N = 3 covering a total of 14 sex workers and 4 social/health workers). Results: In total, 41% (n/N = 71/173) of sex workers reported at least one form of violence, and those facing severe financial problems due to the COVID-19 containment measures were significantly more likely to report violence (adjusted OR: 2.7, CI 1.0–7.2, p = 0.049) compared to those without financial problems. Only 9% of those having reason to file charges officially did so. FGDs explained that violence was high due to the unsafe working conditions, and police reporting was low because police were more concerned with enforcing COVID-19 sex work restrictions rather than with prioritizing the safety and well-being of sex workers. Discussion: We found high rates of reported violence and low police reporting among sex workers in The Netherlands during the COVID-19 pandemic, and COVID-19 control measures and enforcement likely contributed to these unsafe conditions. Safeguarding the safety of sex workers during future crises demands legislation grounded in human rights principles. This includes measures such as mitigating income loss during prohibition of sex work, and shifting police focus towards protecting rather than prosecuting sex workers engaged in illegal sex work. Background: Recent years have seen a rapid growth in the number of online health communities targeted at patients with long-term conditions. Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is a rare neurological disease for which such communities have not been analysed before. The aim of this study was to better understand the needs of the MG population through the collation and categorisation of questions that users of MG social media were asking fellow users on these platforms. Methodology: Systematic observation of four MG Facebook groups was conducted over a 2-month period. Groups were selected for analysis based on the following systematic criteria: Language (English), Membership (≥ 5,000 members), group activity (≥ 2 posts per week), target audience (general MG population) and researcher engagement with group administrators. The study protocol was reviewed by the institutional review board of the Charité—Universitätsmedizin Berlin (EA2/106/22). During the observation period, data were extracted from individual posts featuring questions made across each group using a systematic and objective coding scheme. All data points were coded directly from the source and collated into an SPSS database (IBM SPSS V.27, SPSS). Absolute and relative frequencies were calculated for categorical variables and proportions were compared across groups to validate the credibility and relevance of different requests. Results: Of the 2,062 posts observed (N = 2,062), 1,392 featured questions (n = 1,392). Questions were asked by 787 unique users: 531 were identified as one-time users (67%) and 256 were identified as repeat users (33%). Six hundred and fifty six users were classified as presumed diagnosed (83%), 61 as seeking diagnosis (8%), 69 as family and/or friends (9%) and as other (<0%). Eight unique categories of questions were observed including MG treatment (31%), Symptoms (19%), Living with MG (12%), Diagnosis (10%), non-MG medication (11%), Tests (8%), Location (4%) and Other (4%). Conclusion: Members of the MG population make active use of online health communities to seek and discuss practical information concerning various aspects of the disease, its diagnosis and care. The openness and willingness of the sample population to share sensitive medical information shows a high need for information not entirely catered to by the medical profession. Nannies in the United States often work long hours for low wages and fear retaliation if they complain. This precarity is exacerbated by nannies working informally, or “off the books,” keeping their work secret from state and federal tax agencies, as well as employment and labor agencies. Yet we have little understanding of how nannies navigate the tax reporting that renders them formal or informal. This Article investigates nannies’ preferences for or against formal employment and tax reporting, the reasons behind such preferences, and how such preferences correspond to nannies’ relationships with their employers and legal institutions more broadly. The Article employs a multi-method research approach that includes an original and innovative survey of nannies and an analysis of nannies’ tax-related posts on the online forum Reddit. To supplement this research, the Article also discusses interviews with fifteen subject matter experts regarding industry norms, common challenges nannies face, and policy reforms. This multi-method approach reveals three key takeaways. First, surveyed nannies express a strong preference for and experience with formal employment. However, this Article cautions against extrapolation—a subset of nannies, often undocumented and working more informally, is missing from surveys and the literature. Second, the formal/informal dichotomy so prominent in the discourse is inaccurate. Rather, nanny pay arrangements exist across a spectrum, with some compensation both on and off the books to accommodate hirers’ and nannies’ complicated interests. As a consequence, the Article’s third takeaway is that simple calls for increased enforcement may not accomplish their intended goals, given the heterogeneity of nannies’ tax lives. Instead, other legal institutions must first be reformed to better support vulnerable nannies and align incentives for formality across key systems such as tax, immigration, and public benefits. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offer highly specialized online courses and have attracted nearly 10 million learners worldwide to participate in various educational programs. These platforms provide discussion forums that allow learners to engage with both their peers and instructors, facilitating idea exchange and seeking assistance, respectively. However, due to the substantial participant-to-instructor ratio, certain posts may go unanswered. Addressing learners' confusion is crucial. This emotional state, often experienced during the learning journey, necessitates prompt support to prevent potential dropouts. This paper proposes the application of a deep transfer learning method to automate the classification of online discussion posts based on indicators of confusion utilizing the Stanford MOOCPost dataset. The approach involves creating an explainable and adaptable deep learning model through network-based transfer learning across multiple educational domains. This model outperforms baseline methods, achieving an average accuracy of 91%. Additionally, employing data augmentation techniques enhances the model's generalizability, resulting in an 11% improvement in the F1 score. To mitigate the inherent opacity of the implemented models, Local Interpretable Model-Agnostic Explanation and Shapley Additive Explanation techniques are integrated. These explanations assess the reliability of features and provide supplementary insights into the confusion detection. By pinpointing confused posts, this work assists instructors in delivering timely responses, resolving learner confusion, providing accurate visualization of key contributing words, and reducing the dropout rate. Background/Objectives: Discussions about the possibility of psychologists prescribing medications have been ongoing for several years. The study aims to ascertain the opinion of the Polish professional community of psychologists on the right of psychologists to prescribe psychotropic drugs. Methods: The study was conducted on online forums (Porozumienie Psychologów) associated with psychologists from all over the world from 15 April 2023 to 30 September 2023. The participants were asked to fill out a Google survey consisting of 26 questions. Results: A total of 677 psychologists participated in the study, including 580 (85.7%) women and 97 (14.3%) men. The majority of the respondents were at the peak of their life activity, between 30 and 50 years of age. A large group of respondents believed that a psychologist should have the right to prescribe psychotropic drugs (46.5%) and declared their participation in activities to promote these rights (52.9%). The vast majority of respondents reported that psychologists authorized to prescribe drugs should complete additional courses as part of the pharmacology specialization (74.8%) and should pass an exam in this field (73.4%) or should complete additional courses in the field of pharmacology (74.8%). Such opinions were much more common in the group with psychological specializations. In this group, more people allowed for such a privilege for those who have completed studies, have documented five years of experience, or have a psychotherapist certificate (p < 0.0001). Conclusions: There may be many societal needs that could be successfully met by psychologists obtaining prescriptive privileges. Plain English Summary: In the United Kingdom, people can access public funding for In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment if certain criteria are met. Funding restrictions differ between geographical areas, but most areas restrict treatment to women with a Body Mass Index (BMI) below 30. This study explores the unexpected and unintended harms experienced by women restricted from NHS-funded IVF due to these BMI criteria. Posts from a popular infertility online forum were collected and thematically analysed. The study found moralising discourses around body weight which emphasized that women had personal control over their bodies and needed to 'work' to change their bodies to show deservingness for treatment. We conclude that NHS-IVF policies in the UK overlook the emotional and moral burdens placed on individuals due to rigid BMI criteria. As the impact of BMI limits on healthcare access is an under-researched topic, we believe this work is important for demonstrating the harms of BMI-restrictive policies. Moralising discourses around weight were linked to the responsibilities of a hoped-for future of motherhood, as users performed deservingness through emphasising their commitment to meeting the BMI threshold. Conclusion: We conclude that NHS-IVF policies in the United Kingdom do not consider the burdensome emotional and moral work placed on people seeking treatment due to inflexible upper-limit BMI criteria. Background: Peer tutorials are widely used in medical and health professions education. Some evidence suggests that peer tutorials can have positive effects for student peer tutors and tutees alike. To promote these positive effects, peer tutors are often prepared for their tasks. However, detailed information about this preparation is missing in the literature. The present study thus examines from the tutors' perspective how peer tutor preparation is conducted, both in interprofessional and uniprofessional contexts, and how this preparation affects peer relations. Methods: A qualitative design was used for the study. For data gathering, three online focus group discussions were conducted with student peer tutors from uniprofessional and interprofessional settings who had a background in health professions. Data were analysed inductively via thematic analysis. Results: A total of 19 individuals participated in three focus group discussions (n = 6/n = 6/n = 7). From the participants' perspective, preparation measures were heterogenous. Of a wide range of different measures, some were perceived as more helpful, others as less helpful. In analysing the data, three relevant themes came up which were dereived from the peer tutors' perspective: roles, eye level, and (self-)trust. All three themes were found to be closely related and appeared to have a direct influence on peer relations. This influence on the learning/teaching process was either positive or negative depending on the respondents' experiences. Conclusion: From the peer tutors' perspective, the preparation they received affected their relationships with their peers in a variety of ways, influenced by the context and the peer tutors' needs. This finding should be taken into account when planning and implementing future preparatory activities. In addition, further pedagogical considerations and discussions about preparatory activities for peer tutors and their potential impact on social and cognitive congruence are needed. Introduction: Collegiate mental health continues to be a worrisome public health concern among college students in the U.S. The unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic has caused an upward trend of mental health crises, especially among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBTQ+) college students. The objective of this study was to assess the mental health statuses, attitudes towards disease control and mitigation measures, and coping strategies among this vulnerable group. Methods: A web-based survey was conducted at a medium-sized public university in the mid-Atlantic region during the summer and fall of 2021 when COVID-19 was still a major public health concern. The survey was distributed through the listservs of the college and was advertised through campus-wide social media. Descriptive and inferential statistics including a t-test for the differences in group means and a logit regression model for comparing the groups were used. Results: Our final sample is composed of 611 students with 79% of the respondents identifying as straight, and 20% in the LGBTQ+ group. Our results showed that LGBTQ+ students exhibited higher levels of anxiety and fear compared to the non-LGBTQ+ groups. Also, a large proportion of LGBTQ+ students were negatively impacted by the pandemic as compared to the non-LGBTQ+ groups (p = 0.05), while they generally have more positive views on the public health measures to alleviate the adverse impacts from COVID-19 (p = 0.001). Conclusions: Public health emergency management should adopt appropriate strategies and adapt their services to support the mental health needs of LGBTQ+ students. Social Media acts as a primary source of information, opinion, and news source for millions of individuals every day for over a decade. This has never been as apparent as the global pandemic of COVID-19, wherein a span of more than just a year, the evolution of emotions amongst the users of social media has never been so swift and fickle. This study uses Reddit post-extraction and classifies 60,370 posts between the time frame of February 11th, 2020 to January 26th, 2021 from the two major subreddits of r/COVID and r/COVID19. With the help of the Lexicon Approach, the posts are classified into positive, negative, and neutral sentiment polarities, and then distributive frequencies and valence scores are measured for measuring emotional contagion. The findings reveal that there is a high presence of negative sentiments in the posts, and the increase in sentimental extremities occurred in three time-frames, the initial pandemic stage; the implementation of massive lockdowns stage; and the approval and administration of vaccines stage. It also shows that there is a linear relationship between the valence of exposed stimuli and their response. Emotional contagion is present in both positive as well as negative posts. Researchers often use attribution theory to understand how people make sense of messages. Unlike the ephemeral actions typically investigated using attribution frameworks, messages can persist. Our study observed how persistence influences the harmfulness of messages and how people levy blame upon harmful posters and those ostensibly obligated and capable of intervening. Grounded in the path model of blame, a randomized experiment (N  =   520) tested whether persistence cues in an online environment (low vs high message persistence) influenced appraisals of the harmfulness of online toxicity (i.e. sexism on Reddit), inferences of mental states for relevant agents (e.g. awareness, capacity), attributions of blame, and motives to respond. Results indicated that greater persistence increased perceived harmfulness and motivated individuals to place greater blame upon inactive/ineffective moderators who were capable of intervening. Social work professionals experience high levels of burnout, emotional exhaustion, and secondary traumatic stress (STS). This paper reports the findings of a pilot test of the Burn-Not-Out programme that aimed to reduce social workers' burnout, STS, and depressive symptoms and to enhance compassion satisfaction (CS), using the mixed methods evaluation methodology. Hong Kong social workers participated in the programme between December 2023 and March 2024 and completed pre- and post-programme self-administered online surveys including the Professional Quality of Life (ProQOL) and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), healthy alongside self-constructed questions on boundary setting, and post-programme online focus group discussions. The results from 94 paired surveys revealed a concerning mental health profile of the participants at baseline, and, after programme participation, there were statistically significant reductions in burnout (Cohen's d = 0.73) and depressive symptoms (Cohen's d = 0.57) among the participants. The participants in the focus group reported that they valued the programme's emphasis on healthy boundaries, one-on-one coaching, and the sense of being cared for, which contributed to their mental health improvement. This study highlights the urgent need for more research on the role of psychological capital in social workers' resilience and calls for more empirical systemic interventions that can promote social workers' mental wellness, with sustainable policies that ensure manageable workloads and adequate workplace support. The global pet trade in invertebrates remains poorly understood and underrepresented in policy and research. Tarantulas are a highly traded invertebrate group. Many individuals in trade are wild caught, and trade regulation is often lacking, raising concerns about the effect of trade on local ecosystems and populations. We addressed local concerns surrounding the international trade of Tapinauchenius rasti (Caribbean diamond tarantula), which is endemic to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. We assessed the extinction risks associated with this widely traded species by analyzing supply of and demand for the species with the COM‐B (capability, opportunity, motivation, behavior) model. This model breaks down decision‐making into capability, opportunity, and motivation. We interviewed stakeholders throughout the supply chain and analyzed content of an online hobbyist forum and a time series of prices for this species and other tarantulas. In terms of motivation, there was limited preference for the Caribbean diamond tarantula due to its morphology and behavior. In terms of opportunity, the species was readily available, primarily through captive breeding. Collecting wild specimens is challenging due to enforcement measures and logistical difficulties, making it an unprofitable endeavor. In terms of capability, the species was relatively low in price, likely because it is easy to breed in captivity. As a result, the current wildlife trade does not pose a significant threat to the Caribbean diamond tarantula. Our methodology can serve as a valuable tool for assessing potential threats posed by trade to other spider species and possibly other invertebrates. Understanding these threats is crucial for promoting responsible and sustainable trade practices that minimize risks to wild populations while ensuring equitable benefits for communities coexisting with wildlife. This study examined 17 threads on a darknet forum for undetected online and contact child sexual offenders (CSOs) to identify key drivers and deterrents of offending and to inform intervention approaches. CSOs on the forum normalised sexual contact with children while minimising or denying the resulting harm and shifting the responsibility for offending. These cognitive drivers of offending were coupled with access to technology and close engagement with online communities supportive of child sexual abuse. Acknowledgement of the harm to children, feelings of guilt and shame, and concern about being caught by law enforcement or detected by family and friends acted as deterrents to continued offending. Context: Maxillary impacted canines, particularly those that are unfavorably positioned, present significant challenges in orthodontic treatment. While orthodontic traction is often considered the standard approach, there are instances where it is deemed inadvisable; management of such cases requires a multidisciplinary approach involving careful diagnosis, treatment planning, and execution. Aim: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the preferred diagnostic measures, strategies, their efficacy, and complications that may arise in managing an unfavorably positioned maxillary impacted canine when conventional orthodontic traction is deemed inadvisable, as determined by orthodontic professionals and its conversance with the current body of knowledge. Settings and Design: The study design involves an online cross-sectional questionnaire survey. Subjects and Methods: A structured questionnaire incorporating questions about preferred diagnostic criteria, alternative management approaches, and perceived challenges in managing unfavorably positioned maxillary impacted canines where orthodontic traction is contraindicated; was circulated using Google Form through professional forums and online platforms over a 4-week period. The respondents were orthodontic professionals pan India, which selected using a convenience sampling technique to ensure a representative sample. Statistical Analysis Used: One hundred responses were obtained from the participating orthodontic professionals. Data collected via google form were entered in excel and analysed using descriptive and frequency statistics in SPSS (version 23). A Chi-square test was used to find association. Results: About 70% of respondents used all available diagnostic tools (Panoramic X-ray, CBCT, IOPA). About 75% of respondents identified individuals over 18 years as the most unfavorable age group for orthodontic traction. About 75% of participants indicated that a cusp tip above the apical third of the adjacent incisor is unfavorable. About 80% considered canines completely overlapping the lateral incisor as unfavorable. About 85% identified an angulation over 45° to the midline as unfavorable. Palatal impaction was deemed most unfavorable by 55%. Most recommended alternate treatment approach for impacted canine which are contraindicated for traction was retention of impacted canine in situ (55%). Pertaining to the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of orthodontic professionals regarding the management of unfavorably positioned maxillary impacted canines and its conversance with the current body of knowledge; there is a statistically significant association. Conclusion: By carefully assessing the anatomical position, angulation and considering patient-related factors, as well as through a comprehensive understanding of potential risks and benefits of each option dental professionals can make informed decisions regarding most appropriate treatment modality and can guide patients toward optimal esthetic and functional outcomes, restoring harmony and function to their smiles. Pharmacists, essential healthcare providers, face significant challenges in professional satisfaction and well-being. This study investigates the factors influencing pharmacists' professional satisfaction, mainly focusing on workload, organizational support, job autonomy, work–life balance, and resilience against burnout. Data were collected from relevant online forums on Facebook and Reddit using a netnographic methodology. The data were anonymized and thematically coded to identify key themes from 23 conversation threads, primarily involving or concerning Romanian pharmacists. The analysis revealed several critical issues: widespread dissatisfaction with salaries, challenges in professional recognition, and the demanding nature of university education. Additional themes included economic and financial insights, global trends and technological impacts, personal experiences and satisfaction, professional growth and education, regulatory and market environment, and workplace dynamics. Findings indicate these factors significantly impact pharmacists' job satisfaction and overall well-being. The study concludes that addressing these issues through targeted interventions, such as policy reforms, educational updates, and enhanced organizational support, can improve the professional lives of pharmacists, thereby enhancing their contributions to healthcare outcomes. Word embeddings provide an unsupervised way to understand differences in word usage between discursive communities. A number of papers have focused on identifying words that are used differently by two or more communities. But word embeddings are complex, high-dimensional spaces and a focus on identifying differences only captures a fraction of their richness. Here, we take a step towards leveraging the richness of the full embedding space, by using word embeddings to map out how words are used differently. Specifically, we describe the construction of dialectograms, an unsupervised way to visually explore the characteristic ways in which each community uses a focal word. Based on these dialectograms, we provide a new measure of the degree to which words are used differently that overcomes the tendency for existing measures to pick out low-frequency or polysemous words. We apply our methods to explore the discourses of two US political subreddits and show how our methods identify stark affective polarisation of politicians and political entities, differences in the assessment of proper political action as well as disagreement about whether certain issues require political intervention at all. During the COVID‐19 pandemic, the stay‐at‐home and biotechnology economies played a big part in economic development. The major internet forums have received more attention and discussions concerning stocks related to biotechnology and the stay‐at‐home economy. When the number of confirmed COVID‐19 cases in a country rises, so does the positive or negative sentiment in stock commentaries. Whether stock forums can be a valuable source of information for investors has become a subject of academic research. This study used text mining and sentiment analysis to analyze stock forum articles, classify daily reports into emotion and investment orientation indicators, and correlate these indicators with the next‐day 2019's stock prices. The findings indicate a positive correlation between stock forum articles and stock prices. Additionally, this research enriched the case of sentiment analysis in the context of Chinese sentiment. Introduction: Children in boarding schools spend most of their time without their parents or caregivers, causing concerns about the suitability of such schools for children with asthma. This study assessed individuals' opinions regarding the suitability of boarding secondary schools for children with asthma. Methods: A qualitative design was adopted for this study using a focus group discussion held on a social media platform (WhatsApp®) of the Asthma Awareness and Care Group (AACG), The group comprised 150 registered members. The study was guided by a structured protocol and based on a vignette comprising three questions. Data were analysed via thematic analysis using framework principles. Results: Out of the 150 eligible members, there were responses from only 19 participants. Majority of the respondents were aged ≤ 30 years (n = 17, 89.5%). The three main themes generated from the thematic analysis include the appropriateness of boarding schools for children with asthma; facilities necessary for boarding schools to cater to children with asthma; and outright rejection of children with asthma by boarding schools. Respondents conceptualised the appropriateness of boarding schools for students with asthma in six distinct sub-themes: asthma severity and extent of control, child's self-efficacy and assertiveness, child equipped with tools (knowledge, inhalers, and asthma control diary), school awareness, facilities, and active support, availability of a guardian, and the knowledge and perception of teachers and schoolmates about asthma. The sub-themes associated with the themes were presented, alongside exemplar quotes from respondents. The majority of the respondents (61.5%) were in support of allowing children with asthma attend boarding schools but with some caveats such as without liability to the school, if facilities are unavailable. Conclusion: Children's age, autonomy, asthma management status, and the school's readiness were identified as important considerations for the safe attendance of children with asthma at boarding schools. Teaching physiology can be challenging as students are initially required to understand basic and abstract concepts. Thus students typically view physiology as a "difficult" subject and place an emphasis on rote learning and memorization. Here, we attempted to address this knowledge gap by introducing a pedagogical intervention into the neurophysiology lesson plan of first-year medical and health physiology students at the University of La Réunion. This intervention aimed to better link abstract concepts (e.g., saltatory conduction) and a pathological disorder (multiple sclerosis), together with a discussion of a specific therapeutic intervention (fampridine). Students were required to complete readings (focused on neurophysiology aspects) and two online quizzes before two scheduled in-person lectures. They could also pose questions on a dedicated online forum. Thereafter, the in-person lectures discussed questions posted on the online forum, provided feedback on poorly answered questions (from the online quizzes), and dealt with questions posed by students attending classes. Student feedback regarding the pedagogic intervention was assessed by an anonymous online survey. This survey revealed that the pedagogical intervention was positively received. For example, 94% of respondents agreed the course was well developed, while 80% indicated that the pedagogical intervention was beneficial in terms of their understanding of basic and abstract neurophysiology concepts. Together, this pedagogical intervention was enthusiastically received by the students who better understood how basic nerve physiology concepts fit into the broader context and that such an understanding can result in the development and the roll-out of unique therapeutic interventions for multiple sclerosis. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: First-year physiology students can find the subject challenging, struggling to understand abstract concepts without any context. To address this, we introduced a pedagogical intervention for first-year medical and health physiology students that aimed to link abstract concepts and a pathological disorder, together with a discussion of a specific therapeutic intervention. Background: Exercise promotion interventions for people with Parkinson's disease (PD) are often offered on a face-to-face basis, follow a generic "one-size-fit-all" approach, and are not typically delivered at diagnosis. Considering PD's heterogenous nature, the existing evidence on the merits of exercise on symptom management and the expressed wishes of people living with PD for access to timely and tailored evidence-based information, there is a demand for interventions that are easily accessible, scalable and co-designed with people living with PD. Objective: Evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a co-designed digital intervention promoting exercise and physical activity, in people newly diagnosed with PD. Methods: Thirty people living with PD for less than one year participated in an assessor-blinded randomized feasibility trial from June 2022 to April 2023. The intervention group received the 8-week Knowledge, Exercise Efficacy and Participation (KEEP) intervention comprising 6 interactive digital modules and 4 online live group discussions facilitated by a specialist physiotherapist. Assessments were performed at baseline, post intervention and at 6-month follow up. Results: Thirty participants were recruited to target with a 64% recruitment rate (30/47). All but one participant completed the 6-month follow-up assessment. There was high retention (97%), module completion (91%), and online discussion attendance (88%). Outcome measure collection was feasible, including accelerometer data with a daily average wear time of 23.9 hours (SD:0.295). Conclusions: The KEEP intervention was feasible and acceptable in people newly diagnosed with PD. A larger trial is needed to assess intervention efficacy and correlation between knowledge, self-efficacy, and activity levels. But there aren't many programs available right after diagnosis that focus on exercise and explain why it's important for managing PD symptoms and how to exercise with PD. In this study, researchers wanted to see if people who were recently diagnosed with PD would join a study promoting exercise through an online program. This program included educational information and live online group discussions with both people living with Parkinson's and a specialist physiotherapist. The program was developed together with people living with Parkinson's and healthcare professionals to ensure that it better suited the needs of people newly diagnosed with PD. Thirty people took part in the study. They were randomly put into two groups: one received the online program, while the other group continued with their usual care. Participants filled out questionnaires and wore a wrist accelerometer for seven days to track their physical activity levels. The researchers found that most participants stayed in the study (97%), completed the program modules (91%), and attended the live discussions (88%) and wore the accelerometers for 23.9 hours a day on average. Overall, the study showed that the program was doable and well-received. Participants said they had a better understanding on the benefits of exercise in PD. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Although the prevalence of dissociative disorders (DDs) is up to 10 percent of the general population, psychiatric-mental health (PMH) registered nurses lack education on how to care for individuals diagnosed with these disorders. METHOD Sixty-two PMH nurse educators completed an anonymous online survey about their perceptions of teaching DDs to nursing students. Braun and Clarke’s six-phase framework was used to conduct an inductive, reflexive thematic analysis of the data. RESULTS Three primary themes were identified: lack of resources, differing opinions on the value of teaching DDs, and stigma. CONCLUSION Though roughly 75 percent of participants reported that they teach DDs to their nursing students, they endorsed concerning misperceptions about the diagnoses. By failing to properly educate future PMH RNs about DDs, individuals with DDs are at risk of receiving inadequate and inappropriate nursing care and experiencing poor outcomes. To reduce the availability of hacking tools for use in cybersecurity offenses, many countries have enacted computer misuse acts (CMA) that criminalize the production, distribution, and possession of such tools with criminal intent. Nevertheless, our research illuminates an unintended consequence: the chilling effect of CMA enforcement on legitimate cybersecurity discussions, some of which may be desirable for cybersecurity research, within online hack forums. More importantly, this study uniquely examines the chilling effect stemming from users' fear of legal harm. Drawing on decision-making theories related to choice under uncertainty, we derive new insights into how legal enforcement can suppress lawful acts and reveal the dynamics of social categorization online. Our research offers valuable insights for policymakers and forum administrators. Policymakers can use our findings to mitigate unnecessary uncertainty in legal enforcement such as CMA. This includes developing legal cases to prevent false prosecutions, implementing tailored communication strategies for inexperienced individuals, and considering supplementary measures like licensing and community recognition. A transparent mechanism involving a neutral panel can also be established to ensure legal interpretations align with community norms. Forum administrators, on the other hand, can provide additional information and guidelines, foster responsible online environments, and align resources with professional standards to navigate the uncertain legal landscape and mitigate the chilling effect on knowledge-sharing. However, the dual-use nature of cybersecurity technology complicates the legal process of recognizing such computer misuse tools and of predicting harmful intent based on mere possession. This predicament introduces the possibility of unfounded prosecution that may produce a chilling effect on the provision of techniques otherwise valuable in maintaining cybersecurity and defending against hackers. This study establishes a theoretical foundation for the potentially chilling effect of such legal enforcement by adopting theories about choice under uncertainty. Leveraging an external shock in publicly accessible online hack forums, we examined the impact of CMA enforcement on users' contributions to cybersecurity-relevant topics that are not targeted by the law. We found that CMA enforcement reduces the quantity and the extent of relevance to cybersecurity in discussions in hack forums. We further identified the mechanisms of this chilling effect by delving into users' heterogeneity in responding to the uncertainty of false prosecution imposed by CMA enforcement as well as users' proactivity undertaken to alleviate such uncertainty. Our study reveals this chilling effect is not just about restraining individuals from lawful acts but also about how they refrain from acts not intended as targets of the law. Systems supporting argumentation exist for a long time and have appeared with many different forms, ranging from online forums, to mind maps and decision support systems. These systems are used daily by teams that collaborate in data intensive and cognitive complex settings, such as teams involved in DNA analysis and social media research. However, current argumentation support systems do not offer the required functionalities for the meaningful analysis and aggregation of the associated complex data, thus not properly serving requirements related to gaining of insights and decision making. Aiming to address these issues, this paper presents an approach that integrates argumentation support services with data mining and natural language processing services to augment collaboration and decision making in the above teams. The proposed approach builds on well-tried principles of hypertext systems and adopts a service-oriented architecture to enable the contextualization of the foreseen services, as well as their execution and integration of their results in the argumentative discourse, hence facilitating its monitoring and understanding. Background: Since 2011 when the Canadian Institutes of Health Research launched the Strategy for Patient Oriented Research, there has been a growing expectation to embed patient-oriented research (POR) in the health research community in Canada. To meet this expectation and build capacity for POR in the field of neurodevelopmental disability and child health, in 2017 researchers and family leaders at CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research, McMaster University partnered with Kids Brain Health Network and McMaster Continuing Education to develop and implement a 10-week online Family Engagement in Research (FER) Course. Main text: From its inception, the FER Course has been delivered in partnership with family leaders and researchers. The FER Course is innovative in its co-learning and community building approach. The course is designed to bring family partners and researchers together to co-learn and connect, and to develop competency and confidence in both the theory and practice of family engagement in research. Coursework involves four live online group discussions, individual review of course materials, weekly group activities, and a final group project and presentation. Upon completion of the FER Course, graduates earn a McMaster University micro-credential. Conclusions: To meet a need in building capacity in POR, a novel course in the field of neurodevelopmental disability and child health has been co-created and delivered. Over six years (2018–2023), the FER Course has trained more than 430 researchers and family partners across 20 countries. A unique outcome of the FER Course is that graduates expressed the wish to stay connected and continue to collaborate well beyond the course in turn creating an international FER Community Network that continues to evolve based on need. The FER Course is creating a growing international community of researchers, trainees, self-advocates, and family partners who are championing the implementation of meaningful engagement in neurodevelopmental disability and child health research and beyond. The course is internationally recognized with an established record of building capacity in POR. Its uptake, sustainability, and scalability to date has illustrated that training programs like the FER Course are necessary for building capacity and leadership in family engagement in research. Plain English summary: In the last two decades there has been a clear commitment in Canada (and the world) to include patients and their families in health research—a process called patient-oriented research or as we refer to it—family engagement in research. Through a group project, family partners and researchers collaborate to create a resource on family engagement. Completing the FER Course researchers and family members earn a McMaster University micro-credential and become part of a growing global community of FER Course graduates.
