Towed camera sleds are regularly used as imaging platforms in the exploration of deep-sea seafloor ecosystems. A drawback of the majority of towed camera sleds is that the information received on benthic communities and habitats is limited to the field of view of the cameras mounted on the sled, and is typically restricted to images of the seafloor from directly underneath the device. In order to increase our understanding of benthic ecosystems and to identify benthic communities, their structure, biodiversity and ecosystems functioning over extended regions, combining image and acoustic data can be a useful approach to achieve this. One such system is the Ocean Floor Observation and Bathymetry System (OFOBS), developed by the Alfred-Wegener-Institute, used recently to discover and quantify the sponge grounds of the high Arctic and the world’s largest nesting fish colony in Antarctica. In the Weddell Sea, the Antarctic Ocean, a vast breeding ground with millions of fish nests of the Antarctic Icefish was discovered with the OFOBS. The bathymetric, acoustic data collected by the system was used to infer the extended distribution of round fish nest depressions in the seafloor for swathes of 50 m on each side of the device during each deployment tow. In the Arctic, the OFOBS system has been used to assess the state and distribution of deep-sea trawl marks across the Svalbard shelf and the distribution of geological and biological assemblages across the Fram Strait. In this presentation, we demonstrate how variations in slope and surface structure influence the inhabiting benthic community in the Antarctic as well as the Arctic Ocean, as inferred by the data collected by this combined camera and acoustic towed system.

During the RV Polarstern expedition to the southern Weddell Sea, in Feb 2021, a breeding colony of notothenioid icefish (Neopagetopsis ionah, Nybelin 1947) of globally unprecedented extent has been discovered. The colony, at time of survey, covered at least ~240 square kilometres of the eastern flank of the Filchner Trough and was comprised of fish nests at a density of 0.26 nests per square metre, representing an estimated minimum total of ~60 million active nests, and an associated fish biomass of > 60,000 tonnes. The majority of nests were each occupied by 1 adult fish guarding 1735 eggs (±433 SD). Bottom water temperatures adjacent to the nests were up to 2 °C warmer than the surrounding bottom waters, indicating a spatial correlation between the modified Warm Deep Water (mWDW) upflow onto the Weddell Shelf and active nesting.

Research vessels equipped with fibre optic and copper-cored coaxial cables support the live onboard inspection of high-bandwidth marine data in real time. This allows for towed still-image and video sleds to be equipped with latest-generation higher-resolution digital camera systems and additional sensors. During RV Polarstern expedition PS118 in February–April 2019, the recently developed Ocean Floor Observation and Bathymetry System (OFOBS) of the Alfred Wegener Institute was used to collect still-image and video data from the seafloor at a total of 11 predominantly ice-covered locations in the northern Weddell Sea and Powell Basin. Still images of 26-megapixel resolution and HD (high-definition) quality video data were recorded throughout each deployment. In addition to downward-facing video and still-image cameras, the OFOBS also mounted side-scanning and forward-facing acoustic systems, which facilitated safe deployment in areas of high topographic complexity, such as above the steep flanks of the Powell Basin and the rapidly shallowing, iceberg-scoured Nachtigaller Shoal. To localise collected data, the OFOBS system was equipped with a Posidonia transponder for ultra-short baseline triangulation of OFOBS positions. The main aim of the MSM95 research expedition was to investigate and map physical impacts on the arctic seafloor in two distinct and contrasting Arctic areas (The Svalbard shelf edge and the HAUSGARTEN time series stations in the FRAM strait) with a range of research equipment. A ‘nested’ data approach was conducted in each research area, with broad seafloor mapping conducted initially with the R/V MARIA S. MERIAN onboard acoustic systems (The EM122 and EM712 bathymetric systems), followed by focused subsequent mapping conducted by PAUL 3000 automated underwater vehicle (AUV) sidescan and camera deployments, Ocean Floor Observation and Bathymetry System (OFOBS) towed sidescan and camera trawls and finally with very high resolution investigations conducted with a new mini-ROV launched directly from the OFOBS for close seafloor visual analysis. These data will be used to produce spatial distribution maps of iceberg and fishery impacts on the seafloor at three locations to the north, south and west of the Svalbard Archipelago, as well as maps of drop stone and topography variations across several of the HAUSGARTEN stations.

Located 10° further north than any sponge ground yet reported, the population, primarily comprising Geodia parva, G. hentscheli and Stelletta rhaphidiophora individuals, covers the great majority of the Langseth Ridge from ∼1,000 m upward, to a shallowest peak of 580 m depth, at very high abundance1. Sizes of individual sponges varied, with a median diameter of 17 cm (± 0.10 cm SE, n = 10,839, and IQR 11–25 cm); the maximum diameter observed was 110 cm and the smallest were just over 1 cm. This size range equates to a median wet weight of 1.4 kg (± 0.12 kg SE, n = 10,839; IQR 0.4–5 kg; Figure S1). Sponges are opportunistic feeders; although they efficiently retain particulates by filter feeding, dissolved organic matter in seawater often represents the main food source2. The low productivity and nutrient fluxes that characterize this region — due to high latitude, permanent sea ice cover, and distance from land — raise the question of how this abundant biomass is maintained. We analyzed the many trails of interwoven spicules across the seamount peaks. Trails were observed to be several centimeters in height and up to meters in length, often connected directly to living sponges. These trails were particularly visible in areas of low sponge density, that is, where trails crossed bedrock in areas sparsely covered by sediments or organic debris (Figure 1A–E and Video S1). Spicule trails in areas of denser sponge aggregation exhibited a higher vertical thickness than observed elsewhere (Figures 1F and S1A, and Video S1). Our observations also suggest that the spicule trails correlated with the distribution of smaller juvenile sponges (Figure S1A).

Sea ice in the Arctic Ocean (AO) has been undergoing dramatic changes during the last two decades. In addition, the water temperature of the inflow of Atlantic water masses at the gateway Fram Strait has recently increased. Long-term data may help to evaluate the impact of these physical changes on the biological processes in surface waters. Over a 25-year period, and mostly in summer, water samples were collected at discrete depths within the uppermost 100 m of the Fram Strait and other regions of the AO to investigate chlorophyll a (Chl a) and particulate organic carbon (POC) standing stocks. Stations sampled from 1991 to 2015 were located in the Fram Strait, Barents Sea (BS), on the Eurasian shelf, and over the Nansen, Amundsen, and parts of the Amerasian basins (AB). Discrete Chl a and POC measurements obtained during 33 and 24 expeditions, respectively, were integrated over the upper 100 m of the water column to monitor spatial and interannual variations in distribution patterns of standing stocks. In general, the highest Chl a and POC standing stocks were observed in the eastern Fram Strait (EFS) and in the BS, while the lowest biomasses were observed in the heavily ice-covered regions of the central AO, mainly in the Amundsen and ABs. Whereas summertime Chl a stocks sharply decreased northward from the Fram Strait and Barents Sea toward high latitudes, the decline in POC standing stocks was less pronounced. Over the sampling period, summertime Chl a stocks slightly increased in the EFS but remained more or less constant in the central AO. In contrast to Chl a, standing stocks of POC eventually increased over the last 25 years in the central AO, possibly as an effect of increasing air temperatures, decreasing sea ice extent and thickness, and increasing light availability. Moreover, variations in riverine discharge and in sea ice export within the Transpolar Drift may have contributed to the enhanced POC stock in the central AO surface waters. Overall, the obj

Over the last decades, the Arctic Ocean has suffered a substantial decline in sea ice cover due to global warming. The impacts of these variations on primary productivity, fluxes of dissolved and particulate organic matter (OM) and turnover at the seafloor are still poorly understood. Here we focus on the characteristics and dynamics of the pool of marine dissolved OM (DOM) in surface sediments of the Arctic Ocean. To investigate spatial and temporal variations of DOM in relation to particulate OM input and benthic microbial community parameters, sediment porewater and overlying bottom water were collected from the long-term observatory HAUSGARTEN in June 2013 and 2014. The study area in the Fram Strait, which is partially covered by sea ice, was sampled along a bathymetric transect (1050–5500 m water depth), from east to west (7°0.2′ E to 5°17′ W), and from south to north (78°37’ to 79°43’ N). Molecular data on solid phase extracted DOM obtained via Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometric analysis and a suite of bulk chemical parameters were related to benthic biogeochemical data. Our results demonstrate a close coupling between the production and input of OM from the surface ocean to the seafloor, and the concentration and composition of DOC/DOM in the deep sea. Surface porewaters collected in 2013 from shallower stations (≤1500 m water depth) in the eastern Fram Strait, had a signal of a larger and more recent input of OM (higher concentrations of phytodetritus). This was associated with higher numbers of molecular formulas, abundances of unsaturated aliphatic and N-containing formulas, in concert with higher enzymatic activity, phospholipids, total organic carbon and protein content. In contrast, porewaters collected in 2014 from deeper stations and from the West, were associated with lower OM input, and showed higher abundances of aromatic and oxygen-poor compounds. Higher OM input was also reflected in higher DOC concentrations and fluxes

Microplastics (MP) are recognized as a growing environmental hazard and have been identified as far as the remote Polar Regions, with particularly high concentrations of microplastics in sea ice. Little is known regarding the horizontal variability of MP within sea ice and how the underlying water body affects MP composition during sea ice growth. Here we show that sea ice MP has no uniform polymer composition and that, depending on the growth region and drift paths of the sea ice, unique MP patterns can be observed in different sea ice horizons. Thus even in remote regions such as the Arctic Ocean, certain MP indicate the presence of localized sources. Increasing exploitation of Arctic resources will likely lead to a higher MP load in the Arctic sea ice and will enhance the release of MP in the areas of strong seasonal sea ice melt and the outflow gateways

The aim of the International Bathymetric Chart of the Southern Ocean (IBCSO) project is to create high-resolution bathymetric compilations for the waters off Antarctica. Detailed knowledge of seafloor morphology is fundamental to almost all marine and maritime scientific activities. The size, remoteness and harsh ice conditions around Antarctica necessitates strong international collaboration to map the Southern Ocean. This is facilitated via connections to international bodies such as the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the General Bathymetric Chart of the Ocean (GEBCO) project, which operates under the joint auspices of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and the International Hydrographic Office (IHO). In 2013, the first version of IBCSO was published, covering the area south of 60° S with a resolution of 500 x 500 m. Over 30 institutions from 15 countries contributed data and shared their expertise to generate the, so far, largest database of bathymetric data for the Southern Ocean. Since 2017, IBCSO is part of the new Nippon Foundation - GEBCO - Seabed2030 project and work on a second version has begun. The new version will include numerous new data sets of high-resolution swath bathymetry surveys, which will substantially improve previously unmapped areas. IBCSO V2.0 will also cover a larger area extending up to 50° S. With this extension, the new bathymetric model will now also include important features like the Drake Passage, the South Sandwich Arc, and the southern parts of the Kerguelen Plateau and Campbell Plateau. We will present the current status of the project, including the areas that will be most notably improved as compared to the previous version.

Towed camera systems are commonly used to collect photo and video images of the deep seafloor for a wide variety of purposes, from pure exploratory research to the development of management plans. Ongoing technological developments are increasing the quantity and quality of data collected from the deep seafloor. Despite these improvements, the area of seafloor, which towed systems can survey, optically remains limited by the rapid attenuation of visible wavelengths within water. We present an overview of a new towed camera platform integrating additional acoustical devices: the ocean floor observation and bathymetry system (OFOBS). The towed system maintains continuous direct communication via fiber optic cable with a support vessel, operational at depths up to 6000 m. In addition to collecting seafloor photo and video data, OFOBS gathers sidescan data over a 100-m swath width. OFOBS functionality is further augmented by a forward looking sonar, used to aid in hazard avoidance and real-time course correction. Data collected during the first field deployments of OFOBS, at a range of seamounts on the Langseth Ridge/Gakkel Ridge intersection (86° N, 61° E) in the high Arctic in September 2016, are presented to demonstrate the functionality of the system. Collected from a location with near continuous ice cover, this explanatory data set highlights the advantages of the system for deep-sea survey work in environments currently difficult to access for the majority of subsurface research platforms.

Microbial observation is of high relevance in assessing marine phenomena of scientific and societal concern including ocean productivity, harmful algal blooms, and pathogen exposure. However, we have yet to realise its potential to coherently and comprehensively report on global ocean status. The ability of satellites to monitor the distribution of phytoplankton has transformed our appreciation of microbes as the foundation of key ecosystem services; however, more in-depth understanding of microbial dynamics is needed to fully assess natural and anthropogenically induced variation in ocean ecosystems. While this first synthesis shows that notable efforts exist, vast regions such as the ocean depths, the open ocean, the polar oceans, and most of the Southern Hemisphere lack consistent observation. To secure a coordinated future for a global microbial observing system, existing long-term efforts must be better networked to generate shared bioindicators of the Global Ocean's state and health.
