Background: Irisin is a muscle-contraction-induced myokine. In previous studies, it has been related to exercise type, fitness and physical activity; however, evidence is not consistent. Thus, the aim of this study was to research the association between health-related fitness and irisin in young women. Methods: The study was designed as a prospective cross-sectional one. Young, healthy, nonsmoking women were enlisted. The sample comprised 40 overweight (OW) and 40 normal-weight (NW) individuals. The average age was 18.63 ± 0.63 and 18.78 ± 0.73 years, respectively. Components of health-related fitness, metabolic parameters, serum irisin and body composition were analyzed. Results: Statistically significant differences were found in physical tests between NW and OW groups for one-leg standing, hand grip strength, vertical jump, modified push-up, fitness index and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2MAX). There were no differences in concentrations of serum irisin between the groups. We found a positive correlation between irisin and hand grip strength (r = 0.374, p = 0.023). In a multivariate analysis adjusted by body fat, a significant association between irisin and hand grip strength was observed in OW group (β = 0.380, p = 0.026); as well, a positive association between irisin and one-leg standing test in NW group (β = 0.311, p = 0.044) was found. Conclusions: According to our findings, hand grip strength could be linked to irisin concentration in overweight young women.

Objective. To examine different health outcomes that are associated with specific lifestyle and genetic factors. Materials and methods. From March 2004 to April 2006, a sample of employees from three different health and academic institutions, as well as their family members, were enrolled in the study after providing informed consent. At baseline and follow-up (2010-2013), participants completed a self-administered questionnaire, a physical examination, and provided blood samples. Results. A total of 10 729 participants aged 6 to 94 years were recruited at baseline. Of these, 70% were females, and 50% were from the Mexican Social Security Institute. Nearly 42% of the adults in the sample were overweight, while 20% were obese. Conclusion. Our study can offer new insights into disease mechanisms and prevention through the analysis of risk factor information in a large sample of Mexicans.

Background Many factors, such as heredity, ethnicity, nutrition and other lifestyle factors, have been related to bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. Additionally, bone mass has been significantly associated with decreased estrogen levels. However, fewstudies have been conducted on premenopausal women. The present study was designed to estimate the relationship between low bone mineral density and levels of serum estradiol and lifestyle factors in premenopausal Mexican women. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 270 women between 40 and 48 years of age who participate in the Health Workers Cohort Study. Information on socio-demographic and lifestyle factors were obtained through a self-administered questionnaire. Body mass index and serum estradiol were measured with standard procedures; bone mineral density was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Multiple linear and logistic regression models were computed to evaluate the relationship between low bone mineral density and levels of serum estradiol and lifestyle factors. Results In linear regression analysis levels of estradiol, body mass index, physical activity, and vitamin D intake were positively related to bone mineral density. Age, cigarette smoking and caffeine were inversely associated with BMD. Finally, the odds of low bone mineral density increase significantly when the premenopausal women had low levels of serum estradiol (OR = 4.93, 95 % CI: 2.14, 11.37). Conclusion These data support that low serum estradiol, advancing age, lower physical activity, lower vitamin D intake, cigarette smoking, and higher amount of caffeine intake are linked to low bone mineral density in premenopausal Mexican women.

The metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a precursor of diabetes. Physical activity (PA) improves endothelial dysfunction and may benefit patients with MetS.Aims. To evaluate the effect of a physical activity (PA) program on markers of endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress in adolescents with (MetS).Methods. We carried out a cohort study of 38 adolescents with and without MetS (18 females and 20 males). All participants completed a 3-month PA program. All variables of the MetS as well as markers of endothelial dysfunction and oxidative stress tests were evaluated.Results. Females with and without MetS showed significant differences for almost all components of the MetS, whereas males were significantly different in half of the components. After the PA program, components of the MetS were not different from baseline values except for HDL-C levels. Some baseline endothelial dysfunction markers were significantly different among adolescents with and without MetS; however, after the PA program, most of these markers significantly improved in subjects with and without MetS.Conclusion. PA improves the markers of endothelial dysfunction in adolescents with MetS although other changes in the components of the MetS were not observed. Perhaps the benefits of PA on all components of MetS would appear after a PA program with a longer duration.

Objective To examine the relationship between sweetened beverage consumption and components of the metabolic syndrome in a Mexican population. Design We performed a cross-sectional analysis of data from selected adults participating in the baseline assessment of the Health Workers Cohort Study. Information on participants’ sociodemographic characteristics, dietary patterns and physical activity were collected via self-administered questionnaires. Sweetened beverage consumption was evaluated through a validated semi-quantitative FFQ. Anthropometric and clinical measures were assessed with standardized procedures. The definition of metabolic syndrome was determined using criteria from the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III. The associations of interest were evaluated by means of linear and logistic regression models. Setting The Mexican states of Morelos and Mexico. Subjects A total of 5240 individuals aged 20 to 70 years (mean 39·4 ( sd 11·5) years) were evaluated. Results Overweight/obesity prevalence was 56·6 %. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in this sample was 26·6 %. We found that for each additional daily sweetened beverage serving consumed, participants experienced an average increase of 0·49 mmol/l in TAG and a decrease in HDL cholesterol of 0·31 mmol/l. Subjects consuming more than two servings of sweetened beverages daily were at 2·0 times greater risk of metabolic syndrome than those who did not consume sweetened beverages. We also observed that higher sweetened beverage consumption increased the risk of all components of the metabolic syndrome. Conclusions Our data support the hypothesis that sweetened beverage consumption increases the risk of metabolic syndrome in Mexican adults, possibly by providing excess energy and large amounts of rapidly absorbable sugars.

Introduction The prevalence of obesity and Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among children and adolescents is rising. Thyroid function has been associated with insulin resistance. There is scarce information about how thyroid function could be related with cardiovascular risk or glucose homeostasis in adolescent. Aim To analyze how thyroid function is associated with insulin resistance and another cardiovascular risk factors in healthy adolescents with risk factors to develop diabetes. Methods A prospective cross-sectional analysis was carried out on euthyroid, adolescents. considered at high risk to develop Type 2 diabetes. Fasting blood samples were obtained. Thyroid function test and another cardiometabolic parameters were assessed. A 75 grams oral glucose tolerance test was performed to calculate insulin resistance. Results One hundred adolescents were evaluated. The mean age was 15.9 ± 0.8 years, There is a negative correlation between Fasting insulin, post glucose load insulin and HOMA IR. There were no correlation with Matsuda index. We could not found any correlation with TSH values. Conclusions We found a correlation between fasting insulin, HOMA IR and serum thyroid hormones, we did not find any relation with serum TSH. In euthyroid adolescents with risk factors to develop diabetes.

Background The prevalence of hyperuricemia has doubled worldwide during the last few decades. The substantial increase in sweetened beverage (SB) consumption has also coincided with the secular trend of hyperuricemia. Recent studies do show that the consumption of SB can induce hyperuricemia. However, the association between SB and hyperuricemia remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between SB consumption and levels of uric acid in Mexican adults. Methods We performed a cross-sectional analysis of data from selected adults participating in the baseline assessment of the Health Workers Cohort Study. A total of 6,705 participants of both sexes between ages 18 and 70 years were included. SB intake was estimated using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Biochemical and anthropometric information was collected using standard procedures. Hyperuricemia was defined as uric acid levels ≥ 7.0 mg/dL in men and ≥ 5.8 mg/dL in women. The association of interest was assessed by multiple logistic regression models. Results The odds ratios (OR) for hyperuricemia in men who consume 0.5-1 SB/day was 1.59 (95% CI; 1.05-2.40) and 2.29 (95% CI; 1.55-3.38) for those who consume ≥3 SB/day when compared to men who consume less than half a SB/day. Background Recent evidence suggests that serum uric acid (SUA) can be an inexpensive and easy-to-obtain indicator of cardiovascular risk (CR). This is especially important in developing countries with high prevalence of cardiovascular disease. We examined the association between SUA levels and 10-year global CR among university workers from the State of Mexico, Mexico. Methods A case–control study nested within a cohort was conducted between 2004 and 2006. Anthropometric measures, lifestyle variables, family background and CR factors were assessed. The analysis estimated odds ratios using conditional logistic regression. Results The study included 319 cases with CR and 638 controls. Subjects in the upper tertile of SUA had 48.0% higher odds of having an elevated CR than those in the lower tertile (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.04 - 2.10) in the crude analysis, but the association was non-significant when adjusting for other covariates. Among physically inactive individuals, being in the third tertile of SUA doubled the odds of high CR, compared with those who perform physical activity three or more hours per week being in the first tertile of SUA (OR = 2.35, 95% CI: 1.24 - 4.45). Conclusion Serum concentration of uric acid is associated with 10-year global CR among individuals with high levels of physical inactivity.

Occult chronic kidney disease (OCKD) and cardiovascular risk (CVR) share risk factors that trigger chronic degenerative diseases. Aim. To assess the association of OCKD with CVR and its risk factors in a sample of university workers. Material and methods. This is a crosssectional study. From 89 volunteers the lipid profile, glucose, urea, creatinine and uric acid were obtained from blood as well as anthropometric measures and blood pressure. They were classified by their CVR calculated by the Framingham equation, into the groups: with-CVR and without-CVR; and by their glomerular filtration rate (GFR) into: with-OCKD and without-OCKD. Then into subgroups of each CVR factor (CVRF): sex, smoking, diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension. The statistical differences between groups (p 0.05) and the correlation between CVR and GFR and the odds ratio (OR) for each CVRF were determined. Results. A negative correlation between the OCKD and the CVR was obtained for men (p = - 0.743, p = 0.000) and women (p = - 0.874, p = 0.000). The overall prevalence of hypertension was 23.6% (OR = 15.43 for CVR, 95% CI, 4.04 - 58.95, OR = 14.75 for OCKD, 95% CI 2.76 - 78.23) and older than 50 years of 33.7% (OR for CVR = 20.37, 95% CI, 6.25 - 66.43). Conclusions. OCKD is strongly associated with the CVR. Furthermore, each CVRF impacts in different range and level to the development of cardiovascular disease and kidney failure.

Determine the difference between the National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel (ATPIII) definition of the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome (MS) in Mexican adolescents and that by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF).We conducted a cross-sectional study of 575 adolescents aged 14 to 16 years using the student's t test, chi square and Spearman correlation.The prevalence of MS was higher by ATPIII (18.6%) than by IDF (8.2%) (p0.001) and there was a concordance of 41.1%.There is a statistical difference in the prevalence of MS depending on the definition.

Objective. To examine the associations of dietary glycemic index (GI) and dietary glycemic load (GL) with blood lipid concentrations and coronary heart disease (CHD) in nondiabetic participants in the Health Worker Cohort Study (HWCS).Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional analysis was performed, using data from adults who participated in the HWCS baseline assessment. We collected information on participants' socio-demographic conditions, dietary patterns and physical activity via self-administered questionnaires. Dietary GI and dietary GL were measured using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Anthropometric and clinical measurements were assessed with standardized procedures. CHD risk was estimated according to the sex-specific Framingham prediction algorithms.Results. IIn the 5,830 individuals aged 20 to 70 who were evaluated, dietary GI and GL were significantly associated with HDL-C, LDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C ratio, and triglycerides serum levels. Subjects with high dietary GI have a relative risk of 1.56 (CI 95%; 1.13–2.14), and those with high dietary GL have a relative risk of 2.64 (CI 95%; 1.15–6.58) of having an elevated CHD risk than those who had low dietary GI and GL.Conclusions. Our results suggest that high dietary GI and dietary GL could have an unfavorable effect on serum lipid levels, which are in turn associated with a higher CHD risk.

Background In the Mexican population metabolic syndrome (MS) is highly prevalent. It is well documented that regular physical activity (PA) prevents coronary diseases, type 2 diabetes and MS. Most studies of PA have focused on moderate-vigorous leisure-time activity, because it involves higher energy expenditures, increase physical fitness, and decrease the risk of MS. However, for most people it is difficult to get a significant amount of PA from only moderately-vigorous leisure activity, so workplace activity may be an option for working populations, because, although may not be as vigorous in terms of cardio-respiratory efforts, it comprises a considerable proportion of the total daily activity with important energy expenditure. Since studies have also documented that different types and intensity of daily PA, including low-intensity, seem to confer important health benefits such as prevent MS, we sought to assess the impact of different amounts of leisure-time and workplace activities, including low-intensity level on MS prevention, in a sample of urban Mexican adults. Methods The study population consisted of 5118 employees and their relatives, aged 20 to 70 years, who were enrolled in the baseline evaluation of a cohort study. MS was assessed according to the criteria of the National Cholesterol Education Program, ATP III and physical activity with a validated self-administered questionnaire. Associations between physical activity and MS risk were assessed with multivariate logistic regression models. Results The prevalence of the components of MS in the study population were: high glucose levels 14.2%, high triglycerides 40.9%, high blood pressure 20.4%, greater than healthful waist circumference 43.2% and low-high density lipoprotein 76.9%. The prevalence of MS was 24.4%; 25.3% in men and 21.8% in women. MS risk was reduced among men (OR 0.72; 95%CI 0.57–0.95) and women (OR 0.78; 95%CI 0.64–0.94) who reported an amount of ≥30 minutes/day of leisure-time activity, and among women who reported an amount of ≥3 hours/day of workplace activity (OR 0.75; 95%CI 0.59–0.96). Conclusion Our results indicate that both leisure-time and workplace activity at different intensity levels, including low-intensity significantly reduce the risk of MS. This finding highlights the need for more recommendations regarding the specific amount and intensity of leisure-time and workplace activity needed to prevent MS.

This rising prevalence of hypertension has been linked to insufficient dietary magnesium intake. However, epidemiological evidence supporting this relationship is inconsistent. To investigate whether magnesium intake affects blood pressure, we examined the association between dietary magnesium intake and the incidence of hypertension in apparently healthy Mexican adults participating in the Health Workers Cohort Study. Introducción: las fracturas relacionadas con la osteoporosis son un problema de salud. Aunque la densitometría ósea de columna y cadera es el estándar para evaluar la densidad ósea, no siempre es accesible. El objetivo de este estudio fue describir dos alternativas a la densitometría ósea para evaluar el riesgo de fractura por osteoporosis en mujeres posmenopáusicas. Métodos: estudio transversal de 332 mujeres posmenopáusicas sin diagnóstico o tratamiento de osteoporosis, que asistían regularmente a una unidad de primer nivel. Se realizó densitometría periférica de talón, examen físico e historia médica. La evaluación del riesgo de fractura se llevó a cabo mediante FRAXTM. Resultados: la edad media fue de 60 ± 8.7 años y el índice de masa corporal de 28.68 ± 4.24. Según la densitometría periférica de talón, mujeres 19 (5.7 %) tenían osteoporosis (T-score menor de 2.5), 171 (51.8 %) osteopenia (T-score entre 2.5 y menos de 1) y 141 (42.5 %) densidad mineral ósea normal. Según el método FRAX, 13 (3.9 %) tenían riesgo aumentado de fractura osteoporótica en un periodo de 10 años y 40 (12 %) de fractura de cadera. Conclusiones: la prevalencia de riesgo para osteoporosis es diferente de acuerdo con el método que se utilice para medirlo. La concordancia entre los dos métodos fue baja.

Antecedentes La prevalencia actual de depresión en México es de 9.1% en las mujeres y de 2.9% entre los hombres. En conjunto, la prevalencia de depresión entre la población general de México es de 6.2% durante el transcurso de la vida. Diversos estudios señalan que los individuos que presentan a edades tempranas un trastorno depresivo es más probable que más tarde en su vida sufran un episodio depresivo. El riesgo de presentar una recurrencia de depresión 24 meses después del primer episodio es de 37.3%. En México hay escasa información sobre la prevalencia de depresión entre los adolescentes. Las investigaciones señalan que los adolescentes son vulnerables a padecer problemas de salud tanto físicos como mentales. Durante la transición del desarrollo de la adolescencia, las mujeres son más vulnerables que los hombres a padecer este tipo de problemas, entre los que se encuentra la depresión. Las formas en que los adolescentes se adaptan y se convierten en adultos pueden protegerlos o ponerlos en riesgo de presentar trastornos depresivos y subsecuentes trastornos físicos y mentales. El acto de divulgar (platicar con un confidente) implica compartir pensamientos e ideas personales con otros y es un importante mecanismo por medio del cual los adultos y los niños forman relaciones cercanas y desarrollan una buena salud mental.

OBJETIVO: Evaluar la asociación del estilo de vida con el riesgo cardiovascular (RCV) en trabajadores universitarios del Estado de México. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Estudio de casos y controles anidado en una cohorte. Se evaluaron variables del estilo de vida, sociodemográficas, antropométricas y antecedentes familiares. El análisis estimó razones de momios pareadas crudas y ajustadas a través de regresión logística condicional. RESULTADOS: Se estudiaron 342 casos con RCV y 684 controles. En los trabajadores con sobrepeso u obesidad, el RCV superó al de aquéllos con peso normal. Los antecedentes familiares de infarto del miocardio se asociaron directamente, y la actividad física moderada-vigorosa inversamente con el RCV, en modelos con interacciones entre género y actividad física; esta relación se mantuvo sólo en los hombres. CONCLUSIONES: Los resultados muestran el papel preponderante de la actividad física moderada-vigorosa como factor del estilo de vida asociado con menor RCV.

Objective. Compare the influence of ethnicity in the prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis in various Mexican populations using two normal dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) reference databases: manufacturer¿s incorporating US Hispanic population and a normal mestizo Mexican population. Material and Methods. MMP included 9 946 subjects participating in an ongoing long-term cohort study focusing on lifestyle and chronic diseases, of which 6 487 MMP males and females aged 7 to 80 years were the normal subjects used to determine bone density T- and Z-scores, following WHO criteria, and peak bone mass values. Abnormal bone mass density values estimated by the manufacturer's and peak bone mass reference values were compared. Results and Conclusions. Our results show that by using the manufacturer´s T-score values in the mestizo Mexican population we are underestimating the number of abnormal bone mass BMD populations.
