1. Sequential host-bacteria and bacteria-bacteria interactions determine the microbiome establishment of Nematostella vectensis

Abstract

Abstract Background The microbiota of multicellular organisms undergoes considerable changes during host ontogeny but the general mechanisms that control community assembly and succession are poorly understood. Here, we use bacterial recolonization experiments in Nematostella vectensis as a model to understand general mechanisms determining bacterial establishment and succession. We compared the dynamic establishment of the microbiome on the germfree host and on inert silicone tubes. Results Following the dynamic reconstruction of microbial communities on both substrates, we show that the initial colonization events are strongly influenced by the host but not by the silicone tube, while the subsequent bacteria-bacteria interactions are the main driver of bacterial succession. Interestingly, the recolonization pattern on adult hosts resembles the ontogenetic colonization succession. This process occurs independently of the bacterial composition of the inoculum and can be followed at the level of individual bacteria. To identify potential metabolic traits associated with initial colonization success and potential metabolic interactions among bacteria associated with bacterial succession, we reconstructed the metabolic networks of bacterial colonizers based on their genomes. These analyses revealed that bacterial metabolic capabilities reflect the recolonization pattern, and the degradation of chitin might be a selection factor during early recolonization of the animal. Concurrently, transcriptomic analyses revealed that Nematostella possesses two chitin synthase genes, one of which is upregulated during early recolonization. Conclusions Our results show that early recolonization events are strongly controlled by the host while subsequent colonization depends on metabolic bacteria-bacteria interactions largely independent of host ontogeny. Abstract

Se ha estudiado la lixiviación de concentrados de cobre mediante cloro-complejos cúpricos, generados in situ por la reacción entre el Cu(II) procedente del cobre soluble del concentrado y cloruro de sodio en medio ácido. Se utilizaron concentrados de cobre provenientes de faenas mineras de Antofagasta, Chile. Se ha efectuado una caracterización química y mineralógica de los concentrados originales. Se ha estudiado el efecto de las siguientes variables, durante la lixiviación: concentración de cloruro, concentración de cobre soluble, tiempo de lixiviación, porcentaje de sólidos y temperatura. Se han caracterizado los residuos sólidos por DRX y microscopia electrónica. Los resultados experimentales indican que es posible obtener disoluciones con contenidos de cobre entre 15 y 35 g/l y de 2 a 5 g/l de acidez libre, con características adecuadas para entrar a la etapa de extracción por solventes. El procedimiento utiliza, solo, reactivos comunes y de muy bajo costo, como NaCl y ácido sulfúrico diluido. La ventaja de este procedimiento consiste en recuperar, a muy bajo coste, la totalidad del cobre soluble y entre 10 y 15% del cobre de sulfuros. El residuo final podría pasar a la pirometalurgia convencional

Abstract

Se ha estudiado la lixiviación de concentrados de cobre con alto contenido de arsénico (hasta 2,5 %), mediante un proceso de oxidación con cloro formado "in situ", por la reacción entre hipoclorito de sodio y ácido sulfúrico. El objetivo de estas experiencias es producir una solución de lixiviación, de características adecuadas para entrar a la etapa posterior de extracción por solventes (SX), es decir, entre 4 a 6 g/1 de cobre y 5 a 7 g/1 de ácido residual. Esta disolución, además, deberá contener cantidades mínimas de arsénico y cloruro. Las lixiviaciones se realizaron por agitación en un reactor de acrílico diseñado para tal efecto, a temperatura ambiente y a presión atmosférica. Se utilizaron concentrados de cobre de explotaciones mineras de Antofagasta (Chile). Se estudiaron algunas variables típicas de la lixiviación, como son: la concentración de agente lixiviante, el tiempo de lixiviación, el porcentaje de sólidos y la temperatura. La caracterización de algunos residuos sólidos, producto de las lixiviaciones, se realizó por DRX (Difracción de Rayos X) y EDS (Barrido de Energía Dispersiva de Rayos X). El cobre y arsénico en las disoluciones se analizaron mediante Espectroscopia de Absorción Atómica. Los resultados experimentales indican que es posible obtener soluciones de las características deseadas con este procedimiento, que utiliza reactivos comunes y de relativo bajo costo.

Abstract

The stated goal in this study was to evaluate the behavior in dairy goats Saanen and Alpine during the Fall-Winter, as well as the influence of the number of labor in production and milk quality, low semi feedlot conditions. The research was conducted in two phases, the first was held at the ranch "Las Cabrillas", located in the community of San Juan Chilateca, Oaxaca. The second phase was the chemical analysis was performed in the laboratory of dairy , Institute of Agricultural Sciences (ICAP ), belonging to the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Hidalgo (UAEH ). The variables were: milk production and milk quality: the results obtained with the Milkscam were: Fat (% ), non-fat solids (%) Density (kg/m3), Protein (%) Lactose (%) Total Solids (%), and pH. Statistical analysis was an experimental design factors using the SAS statistical package The System 9. Females Alpine phenotype obtained the highest parameters of the second to fifth birth delivery, with a best result of third birth as production (2,490 kg) , lactose (5.07 %) and density (1030.732 kg/m3 ). Phenotype Saanen females obtained the highest parameters in the fourth. Higher Fall parameters were obtained , where most of the flock is drying and therefore production and elements decreases as fat (4045 %) , protein (2.777 %) , total solids (0.706 % ) and solids increases no fatty (7.381 %).

Abstract

Copolímeros de poli ( acrilamida-ácido metacrílico) se sintetizaron mediante copolimerización radicálica en solución acuosa a 60 ºC utilizando per­sulfato de potasio (K2S20s) como iniciador. El comportamiento de hincha­miento de los copolímeros preparados con 95, 90, 88 y 84 mol% de ácido meta­crílico en agua a diferentes temperaturas (25, 37 y 45 ºC) fue seguido gravimé­tricamente. Para los "estadios iniciales" del proceso de hinchamiento ( (M,/Mmáx) < 0.5) se calculó el exponente difusional de los copolímeros y los valores obte­nidos indican que el proceso de difusión es no Fickiano. En los "estadios supe­riores" (después de los 90 min) del proceso de hinchamiento se encontró que dicho proceso se ajusta al modelo propuesto por Schott (segundo orden).

Abstract

Copolymers of furfuryl acrylate (A) with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (H) were prepared by free radical copolymerization in DMF solution at 50°C, using 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator. The reactivity ratios of both monomers were calculated according to the general copolymerization equation using the Fineman-Röss and Kelen-Tüdos 1inearization methods, as well as the Tidwell-Mortimer non linear least-squares treatment and the Monte Carlo random method. The reactivity ratios obtained were rA = 0.93 and rH = 1.42. Similar results were obtained by both, the Monte Carlo and the non-linear least squares methods. The microstructure of copolymer chains based on the first order Markov statistics is described.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to explore the mechanical properties of AlCrSiN and AlTiSiN coatings deposited on Inconel and steel substrates after thermal treatments of 500 °C and 800 °C. Nanoindentation was used to measure the hardness and elastic modulus of the coatings, and microindentation was used for observing the contact damage with Hertzian contact loadings. Microscratch and Mercedes tests were used to evaluate the adhesive strength between coating and substrate with both progressive and static loads, respectively. The surface damage was inspected by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Focus ion beams (FIB) were used to mill the cross-sections in order to detect the extent and mode of failure. The results show that AlCrSiN coatings and Inconel substrates exhibit better mechanical performance, even after thermal treatments.

Abstract

Abstract In recent years, natural products with antifungal and antioxidant activities are being increasingly researched for a more sustainable alternative to the chemicals currently used for the same purpose. The plant pathogenic fungus Alternaria alternata is a causative agent of diseases in citrus, leading to huge economic losses. Antioxidants are important for the production of medicines for various diseases that may be related to the presence of free radicals, such as cancer, and in the cosmetic industry as an anti-aging agent and the food industry as preservatives. This study evaluated the antifungal and antioxidant potential of extracts of mature leaves of Myrcia splendens, a tree species that occurs in the Brazilian Cerrado. The antioxidant potential was analyzed by an assay of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging method, and the antifungal activity was assessed through the evaluation of mycelial growth. Majority of the extracts exhibited a strong antioxidant activity, especially the acetonic extract (4A). The antioxidant activity may be related to the presence of phenolic compounds. However, the extracts showed no inhibitory activity of mycelial growth of the fungus tested, with the exception of dichloromethanic extract (2B), which had an inhibitory effect (10.2%) at the end of testing.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES Robotic surgery, although it shares some technical features with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), offers some advantages, such as ergonomic design and a 3-dimensional view. Thus, the learning curve for robotic lung resection could be expected to be shorter than that of VATS for surgeons who are proficient in VATS. The goal of this study was to analyse the robotic learning curve of a VATS experienced surgeon and to compare it to his own VATS learning curve for anatomical lung resections. METHODS We conducted a retrospective observational study based on the prospectively recorded data of the first 150 anatomical lung resections performed with VATS (75 cases) and with the robotic (75 cases) approach by the same surgeon in our centre. Learning curves were analysed using the cumulative sum method to assess the trends for total operating time and surgical failure (intraoperative complications, conversion, technical postoperative complications and reintervention) across case sequences. Subsequently, using adequate statistical tests, we compared the postoperative outcomes in both groups. RESULTS The median operating time was similar for both approaches (P = 0.401). Surgical failure rate was higher for the robotic cases (21.3% vs 12%; P = 0.125). Based on cumulative sum analyses, operating time decreased starting with case 34 in the VATS group and with case 32 in the robotic cohort. Surgical failure tended to decline starting with case 28 in the VATS group and with case 32 in the robotic group. Perioperative results were similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS When we compared robotic and VATS learning curves for anatomical lung resection, we did not find any differences. Postoperative outcomes were also similar with both approaches.

11. Nuevas perspectivas para la exploración en zonas de cobertura post-mineral: caso de estudio en la pampa caya (20°30’ - 21°s)

En la Cordillera de Domeyko, al noreste del distrito minero Collahuasi, se encuentra la Pampa Caya, una cuenca sedimentaria de edad miocena, que cubre casi en totalidad la geología de la zona. A partir del uso de datos geofísicos de potencial magnético y gravimétrico se determinaron las unidades y estructuras geológicas que se encuentran bajo la cobertura en la Pampa Caya. Utilizando filtros Pasa-Baja, Pasa-Alta y primeras derivadas verticales del Vector Residual del Campo Magnético y Anomalía de Bouguer, se logró interpretar anomalías geofísicas que indican una continuidad de las formaciones y estructuras ocultas bajo la pampa. Con estos resultados fue posible correlacionar la continuidad de las formaciones Collahuasi, Quehuita y Cerro Empexa, fallas inversas locales y establecer la continuidad latitudinal del Sistema de Falla de Domeyko. Las características geológicas y geofísicas distintivas regionales para franjas metalogénicas andinas y distritales del clúster de Collahuasi fueron aplicadas en la zona de estudio, con la finalidad de proponer un mapa prospectivo bajo la cobertura post-mineral de la Pampa Caya.

Organizational vitality encompasses organizational mission and identity, organizational purpose and values, and employee engagement, cohesiveness, anxiety, and information sharing. Using the organizational vitality framework consisting of the following five pillars: (1) human, (2) knowledge, (3) intellectual, (4) financial capital, and (5) market value, we propose a reflection guide and specific calls to action for academic leaders including deans, department chairs, assistant/associate deans, and others within pharmacy and healthcare education systems. Our overall aim is to provide a blueprint for academic leaders to assess and enhance the organizational health, vitality, resiliency, and sustainability of their pharmacy educational programs using an established organizational vitality framework. This guide can help academic leaders at all levels to reflect on their organization’s vitality and use the steps outlined here to renew conversations about faculty life, identities as leaders, the global pharmacy Academy’s core mission and values, and the pursuit of work-life harmony in the context of their pharmacy schools’ organizational vitality. All leaders within pharmacy educational programs should identify and embrace a holistic and guided framework that emphasizes organizational vitality.

Abstract

We present the results of the first molecular analysis of the phylogenetic affinities of the Asian colubroid genus Sibynophis. We recovered a sister-group relationship between Sibynophis and the New World Scaphiodontophis. Although Liophidium sometimes is associated with these genera, the relationship is distant. Morphological characters that Liophidium shares with Sibynophis and Scaphiodontophis are resolved as homoplasies that probably reflect the similarities of their specialized feeding habits. The traditional subfamily Sibynophiinae is elevated to the family-level, and Scaphiodontophiinae is placed in its synonymy.

Abstract

Las mezclas asfálticas tibias (MAT) son mezclas asfálticas producidas a temperaturas reducidas en comparación con las mezclas asfálticas en caliente (MAC) convencionales. Reducciones de temperatura del orden de 10 a 50 °C son posibles mediante la incorporación de diversos aditivos tipo MAT. Sin embargo, diferentes aspectos, incluyendo la estructura interna de MAT, aún son objeto de estudio. Consecuentemente, este artículo se centró en la evaluación de la estructura interna de MAT (calculada en términos de las características de los vacíos conectados (VC)), fabricadas con tres aditivos tipo MAT: Asphamin®, Sasobit®, y Evotherm®. El contenido de VC corresponde a la fracción de vacíos que forman rutas conectadas en un espécimen compactado y está mejor relacionado con la respuesta de la mezcla asfáltica (e.g., permeabilidad) que el contenido total de vacíos. El análisis de VC se basó en la aplicación de tomografía computarizada con rayos-X y el subsecuente análisis de imágenes. Los resultados correspondientes sugirieron la necesidad de realizar investigación adicional para caracterizar mezclas compactadas en campo, producidas a niveles de densificación comparables con aquellos obtenidos en laboratorio. Adicionalmente, la inclusión de aditivos tipo MAT y la correspondiente reducción de temperatura no afectaron notoriamente la estructura interna de especímenes compactados en laboratorio (115 mm de altura) producidos para evaluación de mezcla en laboratorio.

Abstract

Several Doctor of Pharmacy programs have rescinded their requirement for applicants to complete the Pharmacy College Admissions Test, modified their requirements for prerequisite coursework, and reduced the minimum grade point average required for admission. As schools and colleges of pharmacy begin to use these and other more holistic approaches to recruitment and admission, the quantity and quality of students in the applicant pool will continue to shift. In alignment with their unique mission, values, and vision statements, pharmacy programs have also expanded aspects of their application and review process to increasingly focus on applicants’ leadership skills, community service, teamwork, collaboration skills, and paid and volunteer work. These aspects allow them to look beyond a candidate’s academic performance and instead emphasize skills and affective domain areas that are aligned with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education standards and Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education outcomes. Ways in which pharmacy schools and colleges can refine their recruitment and admissions processes to better align with their unique curricular and programmatic niche areas are discussed.

Abstract

Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was declared a pandemic by the WHO on 11 March 2020 and global surgical practice was compromised. This Commission aimed to document and reflect on the changes seen in the surgical environment during the pandemic, by reviewing colleagues’ experiences and published evidence. Methods In late 2020, BJS contacted colleagues across the global surgical community and asked them to describe how severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) had affected their practice. In addition to this, the Commission undertook a literature review on the impact of COVID-19 on surgery and perioperative care. A thematic analysis was performed to identify the issues most frequently encountered by the correspondents, as well as the solutions and ideas suggested to address them. Results BJS received communications for this Commission from leading clinicians and academics across a variety of surgical specialties in every inhabited continent. The responses from all over the world provided insights into multiple facets of surgical practice from a governmental level to individual clinical practice and training. Conclusion The COVID-19 pandemic has uncovered a variety of problems in healthcare systems, including negative impacts on surgical practice. Global surgical multidisciplinary teams are working collaboratively to address research questions about the future of surgery in the post-COVID-19 era. The COVID-19 pandemic is severely damaging surgical training. The establishment of a multidisciplinary ethics committee should be encouraged at all surgical oncology centres. Innovative leadership and collaboration is vital in the post-COVID-19 era.

Abstract

Recent case-series of small size implied a pathophysiological association between coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and severe large-vessel acute ischemic stroke. Given that severe strokes are typically associated with poor prognosis and can be very efficiently treated with recanalization techniques, confirmation of this putative association is urgently warranted in a large representative patient cohort to alert stroke clinicians, and inform pre- and in-hospital acute stroke patient pathways. We pooled all consecutive patients hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 and acute ischemic stroke in 28 sites from 16 countries. To assess whether stroke severity and outcomes (assessed at discharge or at the latest assessment for those patients still hospitalized) in patients with acute ischemic stroke are different between patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19, we performed 1:1 propensity score matching analyses of our COVID-19 patients with non-COVID-19 patients registered in the Acute Stroke Registry and Analysis of Lausanne Registry between 2003 and 2019. Between January 27, 2020, and May 19, 2020, 174 patients (median age 71.2 years; 37.9% females) with COVID-19 and acute ischemic stroke were hospitalized (median of 12 patients per site). The median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was 10 (interquartile range [IQR], 4-18). In the 1:1 matched sample of 336 patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19, the median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale was higher in patients with COVID-19 (10 [IQR, 4-18] versus 6 [IQR, 3-14]), P=0.03; (odds ratio, 1.69 [95% CI, 1.08-2.65] for higher National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score). There were 48 (27.6%) deaths, of which 22 were attributed to COVID-19 and 26 to stroke. Among 96 survivors with available information about disability status, 49 (51%) had severe disability at discharge. Abstract

Garcinia dauphinensis is a previously uninvestigated endemic plant species of Madagascar. The new phloroglucinols dauphinols A-F and 3'-methylhyperjovoinol B (1-7) and six known phloroglucinols (8-13) together with tocotrienol 14 and three triterpenoids 15-17 were isolated from an ethanolic extract of G. dauphinensis roots using various chromatographic techniques. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by NMR, MS, optical rotation, and ECD data. Theoretical ECD spectra and specific rotations for 2 were calculated and compared to experimental data in order to assign its absolute configuration. Among the compounds tested, 1 showed the most promising growth inhibitory activity against A2870 ovarian cancer cells, with IC(50) = 4.5 ± 0.9 μM, while 2 had good antiplasmodial activity against the Dd2 drug-resistant strain of Plasmodium falciparum, with IC(50) = 0.8 ± 0.1 μM.

26. Treatment with radiosynoviorthesis in hemophilic patients with and without inhibitor

Abstract

Background. Spontaneous bleedings occurring into joints (hemarthrosis) are the most common manifestations of hemophilia and causes severe joint damage ultimately resulting in joint disfunction known as hemophilic arthropathy. Among available therapeutic options for reducing recurrent hemarthrosis-associated damage, radiosynoviorthesis (RS) has proven effective in improving joint function. Aim. To assess the impact of RS with Yttrium 90 (90Y) on frequency of hemarthroses, need for prophylaxis and joint function in a group of pediatric patients, as well as on costs for hospitalization. Methods . Between November 1998 and February 2017, we evaluated 27 pediatric patients with mild, moderate or severe hemophilia with haemophilic arthropathy. Patients suffered between two and five episodes of hemarthrosis per month. Overall, RS was applied in 60 joints. All patients but 3 received one single intra-articular injection with 90Y. Results. During the follow-up, one patient showed a recurrent joint bleeding 15 months after RS wit 90Y, one patient after 12 months and one patient after 45 days. Both costs of hospitalization and need for prophylaxis were reduced. Conclusion. RS with 90Y is a simple and safe treatment for recurrent hemarthrosis in patients with hemophilia. It decreases the use of factor VIII / IX and improves joint function.

27. Phytotoxic Potential of Benzyl Salicylate and Benzyl Benzoate on Bioindicator and Invasive Species

Abstract

The growing number of invasive species in agricultural areas reduces productivity and results in production losses. The need to discover new compounds with herbicidal activity increases as cases of resistance of invasive plants to herbicides rise. The aim of this study was to evaluate the phytotoxic potential of benzyl salicylate and benzyl benzoate upon the growth of Triticum aestivum coleoptiles and on the initial growth of Lactuca sativa, Lycopersicon esculentum, Allium cepa, T. aestivum, Euphorbia heterophylla, and Megathyrsus maximus. For the T. aestivum coleoptile bioassays, the treatments used the concentrations of 10-3 M, 3 × 10-4 M, 10-4 M, 3 × 10-5 M, and 10-5 M; while for the initial growth bioassays the concentrations of 10-3 M, 10-4 M, and 10-5 M were used. Both compounds presented a minimum of 89% growth inhibition on T. aestivum coleoptiles in all concentrations. Both compounds inhibited the growth of the root system and shoot of A. cepa and E. heterophylla at all concentrations. The species most affected by both compounds in all evaluated parameters was E. heterophylla. For the benzyl benzoate, the inhibition of the roots of E. heterophylla were statistically equivalent to those obtained with the herbicide. Regarding benzyl salicylate, the root inhibition in this species in the 10-4 M and 10-5 M treatments did not differ statistically from the herbicide in the same concentrations. Benzyl salicylate and benzyl benzoate are compounds that presented phytotoxic activity on E. heterophylla and for the first time the phytotoxic effect of these compounds on invasive species is reported.

Abstract

A study was conducted to determine the Livestock farm intensity coefficient, by the ratio between the stocking and carrying capacity of grazinglands of the Los Rios, Los Lagos, General Carlos Ibanez del Campo (Aysen) and Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica (Chilean Patagonia) regions. The current stocking rate was determined through 2007 Livestock Census information and coverage crosses regarding pastoral rangelands at the county level, and it was compared which the carrying capacity. The latter variable was calculated from the average rangeland DM annual production, which was estimated at regional level through a simple model based on a series of 10-year-MODIS NDVI images with a pixel size of 6.25 ha approximately. Preliminary results of this analysis indicate that the rangelands of the Chilean Patagonia present high spatial variability in terms of their annual DM production. Los Lagos and Los Rios regions are those with higher stocking density, showing them the highest degree of human intervention, which in many cases results in a situation of overgrazing, contrary to what happens in many counties of the Aysen region. In this respect, the Magallanes Region presents degrees of use near the optimum, an aspect that should be taken with caution since the estimates of the model PMSA vs NDVI in shrublands and bunchgrass grassland seem to be less plausible.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES In healthy individuals, increasing pulmonary blood flow during exercise also increases the % of the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO%), but its evolution after lung resection is unknown. In this study, our goal was to measure changes in exercise DLCO% during the first 3 days after anatomical lung resection. METHODS We performed a prospective observational study on consecutive patients with non-small-cell lung cancer scheduled for anatomical resection, except pneumonectomy, during a 6-month period. Patients underwent measurement of the DLCO% by a single-breath technique adjusted by the concentration of haemoglobin—before and after standardized exercise the day before and 3 consecutive days after surgery. The delta (Δ) variation (basal versus exercise) was calculated. The number of functioning resected segments was calculated by bronchoscopy. Postoperative pain and pleural air leak were estimated using a visual analogue scale and graduated conventional pleural drainage systems, respectively, and their influence on ΔDLCO each postoperative day was evaluated by linear regression analysis. RESULTS Fifty-seven patients were included. The visual analogue scale of pain and pleural air leaks were not correlated to Δ values (model R2: 0.0048). The evolution of Δ values during 3 postoperative days showed a progressive recovery of values, but on the third day, DLCO% capacity during exercise was still impaired (P < 0.01), especially in patients who underwent a resection of more than 3 functioning segments. CONCLUSIONS Physiological increase in DLCO% during exercise is still impaired on the third postoperative day in patients undergoing resection of more than 3 functioning pulmonary segments. This fact should be considered before discharging those patients after anatomical lung resection.

Abstract

In recent years, natural products with antifungal and antioxidant activities are being increasingly researched for a more sustainable alternative to the chemicals currently used for the same purpose. The plant pathogenic fungus Alternaria alternata is a causative agent of diseases in citrus, leading to huge economic losses. Antioxidants are important for the production of medicines for various diseases that may be related to the presence of free radicals, such as cancer, and in the cosmetic industry as an anti-aging agent and the food industry as preservatives. This study evaluated the antifungal and antioxidant potential of extracts of mature leaves of Myrcia splendens, a tree species that occurs in the Brazilian Cerrado. The antioxidant potential was analyzed by an assay of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging method, and the antifungal activity was assessed through the evaluation of mycelial growth. Majority of the extracts exhibited a strong antioxidant activity, especially the acetonic extract (4A). The antioxidant activity may be related to the presence of phenolic compounds. However, the extracts showed no inhibitory activity of mycelial growth of the fungus tested, with the exception of dichloromethanic extract (2B), which had an inhibitory effect (10.2%) at the end of testing. Resumo A busca de produtos naturais com atividades antifúngica e antioxidante tem crescido nos últimos anos como alternativa mais sustentável para os produtos químicos atualmente usados para estas funções. O fungo fitopatogênico Alternaria alternata é agente causador de doenças nos citros, levando a grandes perdas econômicas. Substâncias antioxidantes são importantes tanto para a produção de medicamentos para diversas doenças que podem estar relacionadas à presença de radicais livres, como o câncer, bem como para a indústria cosmética, como agentes anti-envelhecimento e para a indústria alimentícia, como conservantes. Este trabalho avaliou o potencial antifúngico dos extratos de folhas maduras de Myrcia splendens , uma espécie arbórea que ocorre no cerrado brasileiro. O potencial antioxidante foi analisado por meio de ensaio da capacidade sequestrante do radical 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl e o antifúngico, por meio da avaliação do crescimento micelial. A maioria dos extratos apresentou atividade antioxidante muito forte, especialmente o extrato acetônico (4A). A atividade antioxidante pode ser relacionada a presença de compostos fenólicos. Por outro lado, os extratos não apresentaram atividade inibitória do crescimento micelial do fungo testado, com exceção do extrato diclorometânico (2B), que foi o único que teve efeito inibitório (10,2%) ao final do teste.

Abstract

Hierarchical (Pt/h-HZSM-5) and delaminated (Pt/ITQ-6) catalysts were prepared as alternative materials to reduce mass-transfer limitations in waste plastics degradation, by increasing external surface area. These catalysts were characterized and tested in polystyrene hydrocracking, and the results compared with Pt/HZSM-5 and Pt/Ferrierite, respectively, as reference materials of similar nature and highly microporous. The activity in polystyrene hydrocracking has been found to be higher in the mesoporous catalysts, Pt/h-HZSM-5 and Pt/ITQ-6. Comparing both strategies, hierarchical and delamination, the latter presents more accessibility of reactants to the active sites, better platinum dispersion and, despite the loss of acidity, higher initial rates in polystyrene hydrocracking, what makes it of great interest for catalyst optimization.

Abstract

Chest wall reconstruction is crucial not only for an uneventful postoperative period after chest wall resection, but also, for ensuring a lifelong good quality of life for the patient. Complex reconstructions should be carefully planned and, sometimes, plastic surgeons are essential for a successful procedure. Various materials and surgical strategies have been developed, giving us the opportunity to choose the best technique for our patient. Emerging developments are mostly based on the use of new materials and the possibility of 3D custom made prosthesis. Currently, this approach is expensive making it exclusive, but in the short term, probably, it will be open for most thoracic units. Nevertheless, we cannot forget that standard surgical procedures, although not so fancy, have demonstrated to be effective and these techniques are universally available. This paper reviews techniques for chest wall reconstruction of large defects from traditional up to the most recently developed techniques.

Abstract

Genomic and pedigree predictions for grain yield and agronomic traits were carried out using high density molecular data on a set of 803 spring wheat lines that were evaluated in 5 sites characterized by several environmental co-variables. Seven statistical models were tested using two random cross-validations schemes. Two other prediction problems were studied, namely predicting the lines’ performance at one site with another (pairwise-site) and at untested sites (leave-one-site-out). Grain yield ranged from 3.7 to 9.0 t ha−1 across sites. The best predictability was observed when genotypic and pedigree data were included in the models and their interaction with sites and the environmental co-variables. The leave-one-site-out increased average prediction accuracy over pairwise-site for all the traits, specifically from 0.27 to 0.36 for grain yield. Days to anthesis, maturity, and plant height predictions had high heritability and gave the highest accuracy for prediction models. Genomic and pedigree models coupled with environmental co-variables gave high prediction accuracy due to high genetic correlation between sites. This study provides an example of model prediction considering climate data along-with genomic and pedigree information. Such comprehensive models can be used to achieve rapid enhancement of wheat yield enhancement in current and future climate change scenario.

Abstract

In this study, differences between reaction mechanisms involved in thermal and catalytic processes of polystyrene degradation, 30% wt. in decalin, over Pt/Al2O3 bifunctional catalyst, are presented. Oligomers and aromatic derivates, mainly styrene, are mainly produced through the thermal process, whereas, with Pt/Al2O3, both depolymerisation and hydrogenation reactions have occured. Oligomers, in a lower concentration than in the thermal process, and aromatics, mainly ethyl benzene, are obtained through depolymerisation with catalyst. Aromatic compounds produced by polymer degradation are partially hydrogenated. These facts suggest the possibility to obtain good quality products through hydrocracking, which could be directly used as fuels without an ulterior hydrotreatment. However, bifunctional catalysts, with both metallic and Lewis acidic sites, are not ideal for this process, because they promote radical hydrogenation reactions, that terminate the polystyrene degradation process, and, additionally, Pt/Al2O3 does promote neither aromatic ring opening nor cracking reactions.

We recovered a sister-group relationship between Sibynophis and the New World Scaphiodontophis. Although Liophidium sometimes is associated with these genera, the relationship is distant. Morphological characters that Liophidium shares with Sibynophis and Scaphiodontophis are resolved as homoplasies that probably reflect the similarities of their specialized feeding habits. The traditional subfamily Sibynophiinae is elevated to the family-level, and Scaphiodontophiinae is placed in its synonymy. Propósito: Reportar la prevalencia del síndrome de ojo seco (SOS) y calcular la validez interna de dos cuestionarios para diagnosticar el síndrome de ojo seco y correlacionarlo con los resultados de varias pruebas diagnósticas. Material y método: Se seleccionaron pacientes mayores de 50 años del sistema de salud de Castilla y León, en Valladolid. Contestaron los cuestionarios modificados de McMonnies (Q1) y Ocular Surface Index questionnaire (OSDI, Q2) y se les realizó: tiempo de ruptura lagrimal (TBUT), tinciones con fluoresceína y rosa de bengala y Schirmer con anestesia. Se registraron los resultados y se realizó análisis descriptivo, de concordancia y fiabilidad de Q1 y Q2 mediante áreas bajo la curva ROC. Resultados: Un total de 270 sujetos (58,2% mujeres; 41,8% hombres) con edad promedio de 64,5 años (IC 95%: 63,3 - 65,7) se enrolaron. El promedio de Q1 fue de 1,2 y la "sensación de arenillas" y las "molestias en ambientes secos" los síntomas más frecuentes. Para Q2 99,2% fueron "sensación de arenillas" y 98,9% "sensación de ardor". Con la combinación Schirmer-TBUT, la prevalencia del SOS en Valladolid fue del 24,2%, 45,8% con TBUT y 45,6% con Schirmer. Utilizando Schirmer-TBUT, la prevalencia del SOS fue de 27,6% para mujeres (p 0,7 para todos los ítems de Q1 y Q2. Se obtuvieron concordancias estadísticamente significativas (p 50 years old in Valladolid, Spain, calculate internal validity of two DES screening questionnaires, and correlate the results with DES diagnostic tests. Methods: Patients > 50 years-old were randomly selected from the medical network census in Valladolid; they answered the modified McMonnies questionnaire (Q1) and the Ocular Surface Index questionnaire (Q2) and then underwent an ophthalmic evaluation which included: tear break-up time (TBUT), fluorescein and Rose Bengal staining, and Schirmer with anesthesia were performed. Descriptive analysis, test concordance analysis, and Q1 and Q2 reliability using ROC curves were performed. Results: A total of 270 subjects (58.2% female; 41.8% male) with an average age of 64.5 years (95% CI: 63.3 - 65.7) were enrolled. The prevalence of DES based on the Schirmer-Tear break-up time tests combination was 24.2%. The mean Q1 score was 1.2, and 1.4 for Q2. Grittiness and discomfort in dry environments (28.9%) were the most common symptoms recorded for Q1. For Q2 "grittiness" (99.2%) and "burning sensation" (98.9%) were the most common symptoms. With the Schirmer-TBUT combination, DES prevalence in Valladolid was 24.2%, 45.8% with TBUT, and 45.6% with Schirmer test. Values for the areas under the ROC curve for Q1, Q2, and most objective tests were < 0.5, except for Q2 and TBUT (0.503). Cronbach alpha was > 0.7 for all Q1 and Q2 items. Abstract

Spontaneous pneumothorax is an extremely frequent pathology. Despite this, there is still no clear consensus on managing these patients. Therefore, we perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness of percutaneous aspiration compared with tube drainage for treating idiopathic spontaneous pneumothorax. Controlled, randomised clinical trials were selected, in which the effectiveness of percutaneous aspiration is compared with that of chest tube drainage, in terms of resolution of the pneumothorax and rates of relapse and hospital admission. Relevant articles were identified by searching electronic databases (e.g., Medline, EMBASE, CENTRAL, mRCT and Pascal), as well as the references of the papers found in this manner, with a cut-off date of April 2009. Quality was assessed by two independent evaluators, using the CASPe appraisal tool. Effectiveness of percutaneous aspiration is compared with that of chest tube drainage, in terms of resolution of the pneumothorax and rates of relapse and hospital admission.

Abstract

The hydrothermal treatment of Chilean Codelco-type copper concentrates with copper sulfate solutions was investigated as a mean of removal of impurities and subsequent increase of the copper assay. The behavior of the mineral phases (digenite, chalcopyrite, covellite, bornite, pyrite and sphalerite) was similar to those obtained in previous works from pure mineral samples. An almost complete transformation of bornite, chalcopirite, covellite and sphalerite into Cu 2 − x S phases was obtained at 225 °C–240 °C. The highest degree of elimination (around 80%) of impurities was in Zn, Cd, Tl and Bi. An intermediate elimination (40–70%) was achieved for Pb and Te, with only moderate elimination (20–40%) of Mo, Hg, Sb and As. Temperature was the variable having the greatest influence on the elimination of the impurities. A concentrate containing 33% Cu, 33% S, 22% Fe and 2% Zn was converted to a highly enriched concentrate containing 70% Cu, 19% S and 3% Fe. The advantages of a concentrate of this type would include: (1) raising by more than twice the smelting capacity due to the high copper content, (2) generation of a minimum amount of slag, (3) reduction by almost 50% in sulfur emissions, (4) substantial reduction of wastes containing hazardous metals and, finally (5), retention of the option to hydrometallurgical copper recovery since the neo-formed Cu 2 − x S phases are more reactive than chalcopyrite to the chemical or biochemical leaching.

Abstract

The nature and basic kinetics of the hydrothermal reactions of bornite, covellite and pyrite with copper sulfate solutions were investigated, as a previous study on the behavior of the bulk Chilean copper concentrates. The reaction of bornite produced digenite at 2+ ] (aq) , and the activation energy was ∼ 100 kJ/mol. Covellite was transformed to digenite at 200 °C. The reaction was characterized for an irregular nucleation and growth of the products, which were non-protective. The order with respect the [Cu 2+ ] (aq) was 0.6 and the activation energy ∼ 110 kJ/mol. The pyrite reaction was significant at > 200 °C and extensive at 240 °C. It produced a mixture of digenite/chalcocite-Q, with small amounts of djurleite. The transformation has a high Philling–Betworth ratio (∼ 1.6), causing the break of the product layers. The reaction order and the activation energy were also 0.6 and ∼ 110 kJ/mol, respectively. The rate of the bornite reaction should be controlled by solid-state ionic diffusion, whereas for covellite and pyrite the rates should be limited by electrochemical processes. Towards the hydrothermal transformation, the reactivity of the main phases present in Chuquicamata-type concentrates was: bornite > chalcopyrite > covellite > sphalerite > pyrite.

Abstract

No information is available on the effects of different biomass yield environments on selection efficiency in switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) breeding improvement. This study was conducted to assess the effects of high- and low-biomass yield environments (HYE and LYE, respectively) on recurrent selection for general combining ability (RSGCA) in a lowland population of switchgrass (NL-94). The top 14 of 65 NL-94 C0 parent plants were selected based on biomass yield of half-sib (HS) progeny tested for one post-establishment year under HYE and LYE conditions. Nine of the 14 C0 parent plants were the same based on HS performance under HYE and LYE. Selected plants were intercrossed to produce NL-94 HYE and NL-94 LYE C1 populations. One hundred and twenty-five HS C1 progeny families (60 NL-94 HYE and 65 NL-94 LYE) were evaluated for biomass yield for 3 years (2002–2004) under HYE and LYE conditions. The HYE produced about 2.5 times higher biomass yields than the LYE in both C0 and C1 HS progeny tests. Estimated additive genetic variance and predicted gains from selection (ΔG) were high in the C1 populations indicating that RSGCA should achieve higher biomass yields. Mean biomass yields of C1 HS families originating from the LYE protocol were significantly higher than those of families originating from the HYE protocol in both HYE and LYE performance tests, suggesting greater selection response under LYE in the C0 population. The estimates of narrow-sense heritability ( $$ h_{\hbox{n}}^2 $$ ) and ΔG from the C1 populations indicate that positive response to selection for biomass yield is possible in subsequent cycles of selection under either HYE or LYE, with a possible small advantage for HYE.

Abstract

Resumen – El Dengue es una enfermedad transmitida por la picadura de un mosquito Aedes. En Colombia representa un problema en salud pública debido a la re emergencia e intensa transmisión con tendencia creciente, el comportamiento de ciclos epidémicos cada dos o tres años.Objetivo. Caracterizar la adherencia de los Profesionales médicos de la Salud, la guía para la atención clínica integral del paciente con dengue (GPC_Dengue OPS/OMS 2010), Clínica de la Policía Regional Caribe Barranquilla, de enero a diciembre 2013.Materiales y Métodos. Fue Cuantitativa, descriptiva transversal. La muestra estuvo conformada por 83 historias clínicas, donde se confirmaron los casos de dengue en la institución, se aplicó un cuestionario y los resultados se establecieron en medidas de tendencia central, para comparar el nivel de adherencia de los aspectos de Evaluación General, Diagnóstico y Clasificación, Manejo a la GPC_Dengue, se realizó un análisis de varianza no paramétrico, Test Kruskall-Wallis. Y una prueba de Tendencia Lineal.Resultados. Se observó que la proporción de hombres y mujeres fue prácticamente 1:1, la adherencia en general fue Adecuada para los ítems evaluados. No se encontró una diferencia entre la adherencia para cada uno de los criterios evaluados. Los resultados fueron coherentes con otros estudios.Conclusiones. El nivel de adherencia global estuvo iguales para ambos tipos de hospitalización, tanto para el nivel de adherencia Muy Bueno, Bueno y Regular; mayoritariamente, los profesionales tuvieron una Buena adherencia a la GPC_Dengue, es probable que esta adherencia sea haya dado por el nivel de la clínica.

Abstract

Basically, micromodels are devices simulating a porous network and are useful tools for studying the transport mechanisms that govern the drying processes of pore structures such as in food. 2D micromodels have traditionally been fabricated with glass and resin and have been very effective instruments to observe and quantify liquid distribution and transport mechanisms involved in processes such as drying. Since they are built with rigid materials, phenomena such as shrinkage and matrix deformation can only be indirectly studied. A new method based on the traditional photolithographic technique has been developed to fabricate deformable micromodels. This technique uses an elastomeric material called polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). This study describes the fabrication protocol for fabricating 3D deformable transparent PDMS micromodels with a log-normal pore size distribution and pore values ranging between 160 and 500 μm (μ = 200 μm and σ = 60 μm). This study provides preliminary results involving drying curves and shrinkage. PDMS micromodels are a useful tool to determine the liquid transport mechanism involved in drying and impregnation in porous structures that simulate a food matrix.

Abstract

In this study, advanced surfaces and coatings have been developed using plasma thermochemical treatment, PVD coating, electroless Ni-BN plating and duplex surface engineering to produce low-friction and wear-resistant surfaces for cast iron stamping tools. Their microstructural and nano-mechanical properties were systematically analysed and the tribological behaviour of these new surfaces and coatings were evaluated. The experimental results have shown that under dry sliding condition, the tribological behaviour of aluminium differed great from that of steel regardless of the counterpart material. Highly reactive aluminium had a strong tendency to solder with tool surfaces during dry sliding. However, the lubricity of gray cast irons can be significantly improved by Ni-BN and DLC coatings. The coefficient of friction reduced from about 0.5 for untreated cast irons to about 0.2 sliding against aluminium. Duplex treatment combining plasma nitrocarburising with low- friction coatings showed superior durability than both DLC and Ni-BN coatings.

Abstract

Bridge crosses utilizing the D genome synthetic hexaploids (SH), Triticum turgidum / Aegilops tauschii (2n = 6x = 42, AABBDD), are a potent means of improving bread wheat ( T. aestivum ) for biotic and abiotic stresses. The synthetic germplasm enables incorporation of the genetic diversity of T. turgidum cultivars together with the attributes of the Ae. tauschii accessions. In this research, SH wheats were screened for karnal bunt in Obregon, Mexico over six crop cycles and several SHs were earlier identified with an immune response. These SHs have unique Ae. tauschii accessions as parents. Phenologically descriptors and additional trait evaluations led us to develop a sub-set of the most desirable combinations for wheat breeding. The SH wheats are generally tall, late to mature, have good agronomic type, and are non-free threshing with a high 1000 kernel weight. Abstract

A study of leaching kinetics of djurleite (Cu 1.97 S) using Cu(II) solutions in a chloride medium was carried out. Copper sulfate and sodium chloride in an acid solution were reacted in order to obtain the aqueous solution medium for the study. Leaching of djurleite occurs as: Cu 1.97 S + 0.97Cu 2+ (chlorocomplexes) → CuS + 1.94Cu + (chlorocomplexes) Where the conditions were: copper concentration = 0.02–0.23 M, chloride concentration = 0.6–1.3 M, temperature = 20–80 °C. At room temperature, a complex solid-phase transformation with formation of intermediate Cu 1.97− x S phases is observed. Different variables such as total chloride and total copper concentrations, temperature, and particle size were used for obtaining kinetic data. The concentration of cupric chlorocomplexes using thermodynamic data available in the literature was calculated. The kinetics is governed by chemical reaction control, with activation energy of 35 kJ/mol (8.4 kcal/mol). The apparent reaction orders with respect to the total Cu(II) and total Cl − were 0.23 and 0.53, respectively.

Abstract

There is increasing evidence that the sucrose normally added to the culture medium affects negatively the photosynthetic capacity of plantlets. At the same time, however, sucrose cannot be eliminated from the medium, as it is required for normal in vitro growth. We argue that this is true only under the conventional light conditions of growth-rooms. In the present paper irradiance of growth-rooms was increased 10 times and although the sucrose-inhibitory effect was found at high sucrose concentrations, it was possible to grow coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) plantlets without sucrose. Those plantlets showed both high photosynthetic capacity and comparable in vitro growth to those grown with sucrose in the medium under conventional growth-room irradiance. Nevertheless, the best growth was achieved under mixotrophic conditions where at high irradiance and moderate sucrose concentrations plantlets accumulated 27 % more biomass than plantlets grown without sucrose under high irradiance and 43 and 73 % more biomass than their counterparts at low irradiance with or without sucrose, respectively.

49. Transformation of sphalerite particles into copper sulfide particles by hydrothermal treatment with Cu(II) ions

Abstract

The nature of the hydrothermal reaction between sphalerite and copper solutions was investigated in the range 160–225 °C. Digenite (Cu 1.8 S) was the main reaction product at 160–212 °C, and chalcocite (Cu 2 S) at 225 °C. The reaction was characterized by the formation of a compact layer of copper sulfide around the sphalerite nuclei. Final particles retained the size and shape of the original ZnS. Reaction rate followed a parabolic kinetic law. No significant effect of aqueous copper concentration was observed in the range 1–10 g/L. An activation energy of 147 kJ/mol was obtained, indicating kinetic control by solid-state counter diffusion of Cu + and Zn 2+ ions through the copper sulfide layer. A possible electrochemical mechanism is discussed. The removal of zinc from digenite or chalcocite bearing copper concentrates is effective at ∼225 °C, in which a high sphalerite conversion can be achieved in times allowing autoclave processing (∼1 h).

Abstract

This work reports the results of copper concentrates leaching, which have high arsenic contents (up to 2.5 %). The treatments were carried out using chlorine that forms from sodium hypochlorite and sulphuric acid. The aim of this work is to obtain a solution having high copper content 4 to 6 g/1 and 5 to 7 g/1 free acid in order to submit it directly to a solvent extraction stage. In addition, this solution should have minimum content of arsenic and chloride ions. To carry out this investigation, an acrylic reactor was constructed where the leaching tests were made at constant temperature in a thermostatic bath under atmospheric pressure. The concentrate samples were obtained from mineral processing plants from Antofagasta, Chile. Typical variables were studied, such as leaching agent concentration, leaching time, pulp density and temperature among others. Some of the residues were analyzed by XRD and EPS. On the other hand, the solutions were analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. The results indicate solutions having the contents stated above can be obtained.Se ha estudiado la lixiviación de concentrados de cobre con alto contenido de arsénico (hasta 2,5 %), mediante un proceso de oxidación con cloro formado "in situ", por la reacción entre hipoclorito de sodio y ácido sulfúrico. El objetivo de estas experiencias es producir una solución de lixiviación, de características adecuadas para entrar a la etapa posterior de extracción por solventes (SX), es decir, entre 4 a 6 g/1 de cobre y 5 a 7 g/1 de ácido residual. Esta disolución, además, deberá contener cantidades mínimas de arsénico y cloruro. Las lixiviaciones se realizaron por agitación en un reactor de acrílico diseñado para tal efecto, a temperatura ambiente y a presión atmosférica. Se utilizaron concentrados de cobre de explotaciones mineras de Antofagasta (Chile). Se estudiaron algunas variables típicas de la lixiviación, como son: la concentración de agente lixiviante, el tiempo de lixiviación, el porcentaje de sólidos y la temperatura. La caracterización de algunos residuos sólidos, producto de las lixiviaciones, se realizó por DRX (Difracción de Rayos X) y EDS (Barrido de Energía Dispersiva de Rayos X). El cobre y arsénico en las disoluciones se analizaron mediante Espectroscopia de Absorción Atómica. Los resultados experimentales indican que es posible obtener soluciones de las características deseadas con este procedimiento, que utiliza reactivos comunes y de relativo bajo costo.
