1. Colossal reversible barocaloric effects in a plastic crystal mediated by lattice vibrations and ion diffusion

Abstract

Solid-state methods for cooling and heating promise a more sustainable alternative to current compression cycles of greenhouse gases and inefficient fuel-burning heaters. Barocaloric effects (BCE) driven by hydrostatic pressure ($p$) are especially encouraging in terms of large adiabatic temperature changes ($|\Delta T| \sim 10$ K) and colossal isothermal entropy changes ($|\Delta S| \sim 100$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$). However, BCE typically require large pressure shifts due to irreversibility issues, and sizeable $|\Delta T|$ and $|\Delta S|$ seldom are realized in a same material. Here, we demonstrate the existence of colossal and reversible BCE in LiCB$_{11}$H$_{12}$, a well-known solid electrolyte, near its order-disorder phase transition at $\approx 380$ K. Specifically, for $\Delta p \approx 0.23$ $(0.10)$ GPa we measured $|\Delta S_{\rm rev}| = 280$ $(200)$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$ and $|\Delta T_{\rm rev}| = 32$ $(10)$ K, which individually rival with state-of-the-art barocaloric shifts obtained under similar pressure conditions. Furthermore, over a wide temperature range, pressure shifts of the order of $0.1$ GPa yield huge reversible barocaloric strengths of $\approx 2$ JK$^{-1}$kg$^{-1}$MPa$^{-1}$. Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to quantify the role of lattice vibrations, molecular reorientations and ion diffusion on the disclosed colossal BCE. Interestingly, lattice vibrations were found to contribute the most to $|\Delta S|$ while the diffusion of lithium ions, despite adding up only slightly to the accompanying entropy change, was crucial in enabling the molecular order-disorder phase transition. Our work expands the knowledge on plastic crystals and should motivate the investigation of BCE in a variety of solid electrolytes displaying ion diffusion and concomitant molecular orientational disorder., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

There is currently great interest in replacing the harmful volatile hydrofluorocarbon fluids used in refrigeration and air-conditioning with solid materials that display magnetocaloric, electrocaloric or mechanocaloric effects. However, the field-driven thermal changes in all of these caloric materials fall short with respect to their fluid counterparts. Here we show that plastic crystals of neopentylglycol (CH3)2C(CH2OH)2 display unprecedentedly large pressure-driven thermal changes near room temperature due to molecular reconfiguration, and that these changes are comparable with those exploited commercially in hydrofluorocarbons. Our discovery of colossal barocaloric effects in a plastic crystal should bring barocaloric materials to the forefront of research and development in order to achieve safe environmentally friendly cooling without compromising performance., Comment: 4 figures, 1 table, 11 supplementary figures, 3 supplementary tables

Abstract

We have studied the barocaloric effect (BCE) in the geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$NiN across the N\'{e}el transition temperature. Experimentally we find a larger barocaloric entropy change by a factor of 1.6 than that recently discovered in the isostructural antiperovskite Mn$_{3}$GaN despite greater magnetovolume coupling in the latter. By fitting experimental data to theory we show that the larger BCE of Mn$_{3}$NiN originates from multi-site exchange interactions amongst the local Mn magnetic moments and their coupling with itinerant electron spins. Using this framework, we discuss the route to maximise the BCE in the wider Mn$_{3}$AN family.

Abstract

Caloric responses (temperature changes) can be induced in solid-state materials by applying external stimuli such as stress, pressure, and electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic-field-stimulated response is called the magnetocaloric effect, and materials that exhibit this property have long been sought for applications in room temperature magnetic cooling due to their potentially superior efficiency and low impact on the environment. Other solid-state caloric phenomena are less developed, but are likewise under intense investigation. Here we introduce a new material that not only displays giant barocaloric (hydrostatic-pressure-induced) properties, but also a large magnetocaloric response near room temperature. It is unprecedented that two caloric effects of such extreme magnitude occur in the same material and at the same temperature. Abstract

L’article présente le retour d’expérience sur la conduite de l’interdisciplinarité dans 14 projets d’un programme sur la gestion intégrée de la santé des animaux. Les difficultés rencontrées portent sur l’acculturation et l’équilibre entre disciplines, l’animation scientifique et les publications. Le degré d’interdisciplinarité des projets va de la juxtaposition à l’intégration des disciplines. Les recommandations proposées aux porteurs de projet sont notamment le décentrage des questions disciplinaires pendant la phase de conception, une mise en œuvre basée sur une animation agile, et, pendant la phase de bilan, une analyse de l’apport de l’interdisciplinarité à la question initiale. Pour renforcer l’interdisciplinarité, le pilotage des programmes interdisciplinaires devrait donner la priorité à l’acculturation des chercheurs à l’interdisciplinarité, apporter un appui à la conception de projets et analyser le degré d’intégration des disciplines atteint dans les projets.

Abstract

We report on calorimetry under applied hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field at the antiferromagnetic (AFM)-ferromagnetic (FM) transition of Fe$_{49}$Rh$_{51}$. Results demonstrate the existence of a giant barocaloric effect in this alloy, a new functional property that adds to the magnetocaloric and elastocaloric effects previously reported for this alloy. All caloric effects originate from the AFM/FM transition which encompasses changes in volume, magnetization and entropy. The strong sensitivity of the transition temperatures to both hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field confers to this alloy outstanding values for the barocaloric and magnetocaloric strengths ($|\Delta S|$/$\Delta p$ $\sim$ 12 J kg$^{-1}$ K $^{-1}$ kbar$^{-1}$ and $|\Delta S|$/$\mu_0\Delta H$ $\sim$ 12 J kg$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ T$^{-1}$). Both barocaloric and magnetocaloric effects have been found to be reproducible upon pressure and magnetic field cycling. Abstract

Reinforced concrete is the most widely used material in the construction of building structures, being noted for its versatility and low cost. However, the durability of reinforced concrete structures can be compromised by the corrosion of steel re-bars, especially in the presence of chlorides. To address this challenge and promote sustainability, the use of corrosion inhibitors has been researched as a way to extend the lifespan of structures. This study assessed the effectiveness of using a commercial corrosion inhibitor on steel re-bars embedded in types of concrete with different chloride percentages, using electrochemical methods to measure the corrosion rate and potential. The results indicate that, in the absence of corrosion inhibitors, corrosion rates become unacceptable with chloride percentages equal to or higher than 0.8% by weight of cement. The application of inhibitors significantly reduced the corrosion rate, particularly at chloride percentages of 0.8% and 1.2%, maintaining the re-bars in a passive state or at moderate levels of corrosion. However, for chloride percentages higher than 1.6%, high levels of corrosion were observed, even in the presence of inhibitors. The findings suggest that the use of inhibitors can be an effective strategy in preventing corrosion in reinforced concrete structures, contributing to their structural integrity and long-term sustainability. Abstract

We report magnetization and differential thermal analysis measurements as a function of pressure accross the martensitic transition in magnetically superelastic Ni-Mn-In alloys. It is found that the properties of the martensitic transformation are significantly affected by the application of pressure. All transition temperatures shift to higher values with increasing pressure. The largest rate of temperature shift with pressure has been found for Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{34}$In$_{16}$ as a consequence of its small entropy change at the transition. Such a strong pressure dependence of the transition temperature opens up the possibility of inducing the martensitic transition by applying relatively low hydrostatic pressures., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

This study experimentally investigated the mechanical properties of cement mortars that were reinforced with polypropylene (PP) fibers after being exposed to high temperatures and cooled under different regimes. PP fibers were added in amounts of 2, 3 and 4 kg/m3, the residual strengths of the mortars exposed to various temperatures up to 500 °C and cooled under different regimes were determined. It was found that the addition of PP fiber at the level of 2 kg/m3 improves the residual flexural and compressive strengths up to 300 °C. The residual flexural strength was approximately 75%, which is 15% higher than that observed in the simple mortar, and the same happens with the residual compressive strength which was approximately 85%, which is 17% higher than that observed in the simple mortar, regardless of the types of cooling used on the specimens. It was determined by means of a statistical analysis that there are no significant differences in the mechanical properties of the mortar according to the cooling regimes used, after having been exposed to high temperatures. The correlation of the residual flexural and compressive strengths was achieved with a coefficient of determination, R2 = 0.82, and the relationships between the variables were considered acceptable regardless of the types of cooling used.

Abstract

The extremely large latent heat exchanged in phase transitions involving strong molecular orientational disordering has recently led to the proposal of plastic crystals as a feasible solution for solid-state barocaloric eco-friendly cooling technologies. Here we determine the reversible barocaloric response of four plastic crystals derived from neopentane [C(CH3)4]: (NH2)C(CH2OH)3 (TRIS for short), (NH2)(CH3) C(CH2OH)2 (AMP), (CH3)C(CH2OH)3 (PG) and (CH3)3C(CH2OH) (NPA). All of them display colossal entropy changes at their ordered-plastic phase transition, which is a primal requirement for competitive barocaloric materials. However, we show that it is also important to verify that the large barocaloric effects can be achieved using pressures that, while being moderate, are large enough to overcome the pressure-dependent hysteresis. From this quantity and using the quasi-direct method, we determine the minimum pressure needed to achieve reversible barocaloric effects, prev, for each compound. Specifically, we find a small and moderate prev for PG and NPA, respectively, which therefore display colossal reversible barocaloric effects comparable to harmful fluids used in current refrigerators and thus confirm the potential of plastic crystals as excellent alternatives. Instead, in TRIS and AMP, the obtained prev is excessive to yield reversible barocaloric effects useful for cyclic applications.

Forprosjektets mål er: Kartlegge kritiske utfordringer, kunnskaper og muligheter relatert til markedsmessige, organisatoriske og tekniske forhold ved forvaltning, drift og vedlikehold (FDV) av overvannsløsninger Definere behov og suksesskriterier for utvikling av nytt FDV-tjenestekonsept Utveksle erfaring og kunnskap mellom prosjektpartnere samt flere av Construction City klyngens medlemmer og i klyngens nettverk Utforme grunnlag for søknadsskisse inkl. konsortium for et større innovasjonsprosjekt Utvalgte prosjekter fra prosjektgruppen og et kommunalt pilotprosjekt ble brukt som referanseprosjekter for å kartlegge status for drift og vedlikehold på forskjellige overvannsanlegg. For å sørge for en systematisk informasjonsinnhenting ble det utarbeidet en sjekkliste som ble benyttet ved intervju og dokumentgjennomgang. Gjennomgangen av prosjekter samt gruppediskusjoner i en workshop har bekreftet at det er mye upløyd mark når det gjelder drift og vedlikehold av overvannsløsninger. Det løftes spesielt frem behovet for å sikre driftserfaringer i prosjekteringsfase og sikre at den som prosjekterer planlegger løsninger som lar seg drifte. Det er et tydelig behov for å gjøre mer for å sikre at vi har robuste og bærekraftige løsninger som fungerer i mange år. Anbefalingene etter forprosjektet er å utarbeide/gjennomføre: Metoder for å formidle kunnskap om gode og robuste løsninger Undersøkelse og sammenstilling av kunnskap om funksjon over tid for overvannsløsninger Retningslinjer for beskrivelse av hvordan overvannsløsningene fungerer relateret til øvrige bygningsmessige forhold Retningslinjer for installasjon og kontrollrutiner Retningslinjer for drift av overvannsløsninger
