L’innovation est souvent présentée comme l’un des principaux leviers pour promouvoir un développement plus durable et plus inclusif. Dans les domaines de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation, l’innovation est marquée par des spécificités liées à sa relation à la nature, mais aussi à la grande diversité d’acteurs concernés, depuis les agriculteurs jusqu’aux consommateurs, en passant par les services de recherche et de développement. L’innovation émerge des interactions entre ces acteurs, qui mobilisent des ressources et produisent des connaissances dans des dispositifs collaboratifs, afin de générer des changements. Elle recouvre des domaines aussi variés que les pratiques de production, l’organisation des marchés, ou les pratiques alimentaires. L’innovation est reliée aux grands enjeux de développement : innovation agro-écologique, innovation sociale, innovation territoriale, etc. Cet ouvrage porte un regard sur l’innovation dans les systèmes agricoles et alimentaires. Il met un accent particulier sur l’accompagnement de l’innovation, en interrogeant les méthodes et les organisations, et sur l’évaluation de l’innovation au regard de différents critères. Il s’appuie sur des réflexions portées par différentes disciplines scientifiques, sur des travaux de terrain conduits tant en France que dans de nombreux pays du Sud, et enfin sur les expériences acquises en accompagnant des acteurs qui innovent. Il combine des synthèses sur l’innovation et des études de cas emblématiques pour illustrer les propos. L’ouvrage est destiné aux enseignants, professionnels, étudiants et chercheurs.

Résumé. Les mutations en cours au sein de l’agriculture interrogent les travaux et les méthodes relatifs à la conception de systèmes agricoles innovants. Ce chapitre analyse la spécificité de cinq démarches de co-conception de systèmes techniques testées en France et dans différents pays d’Afrique et d’Amérique latine. Elles se basent sur des interactions fortes entre les acteurs impliqués dans ces démarches, facilitées par une diversité d’objets intermédiaires tels que la modélisation ou l’expérimentation agronomique en milieu paysan. Elles ont permis de produire des connaissances opérationnelles et scientifiques sur des changements techniques et leurs conditions de mise en œuvre à l’échelle de l’exploitation ainsi que sur les conditions institutionnelles favorables à l’émergence de nouveaux systèmes. Ces démarches mobilisent des compétences ne relevant pas seulement de l’agronomie. L’intégration de chercheurs relevant des sciences humaines s’avère centrale, en particulier pour analyser comment hybrider des connaissances multiples en vue d’accompagner l’innovation au sein des exploitations et des territoires.

International audience; With increasing concerns on the sustainability of agricultural systems, many tools have been developed to assess farm sustainability. The main objective of this study was to assess and compare the sustainability of different forms of family farm organization. A second objective was to test the relevance of the IDEA method (Indicateurs de Durabilité des Exploitations Agricoles or Farm Sustainability Indicators) to compare tree-crop-based family farms in tropical areas. Percentages of sustainability were calculated based on individual interviews conducted with 25 rubber farmers representing three different types of farm (typology based on the labor used for farming activities), using three scales and 10 components. The socio-territorial scale was the weak point of the rubber farms. In contrast, the economic scale was relatively the best asset on all farms. The factor that most differentiated the three types of farm was the agro-ecological scale followed by the socio-territorial scale. The economic scale did not discriminate. Moreover, only the diversity of production and efficiency components showed a notable difference between the different types of farm. Overall, the three types of farm with contrasting forms of farm organization were not much different in terms of sustainability performance. Family business farms with managerial family labor appeared to be the least sustainable. Thus, as family business farms are becoming more and more important in Thai agriculture, if these results are confirmed on a broader scale, this represents an issue for the sustainability of the Thai rubber sector that would require government intervention.; Les préoccupations croissantes concernant la durabilité des systèmes agricoles ont conduit au développement de nombreux outils pour l’évaluer. L’objectif principal de cette étude était d’évaluer et comparer la durabilité de différentes formes d’organisation de l’agriculture familiale. Un deuxième objectif était de tester la pertinence de la méthode IDEA (Indicateurs de Durabilité des Exploitations Agricoles) pour comparer des exploitations familiales à base de plantes pérennes en zone tropicale. À partir d’entretiens individuels conduits avec 25 planteurs d’hévéa représentant trois types d’exploitations agricoles (typologie basée sur le travail mobilisé pour les activités agricoles), des pourcentages de durabilité ont été calculés sur trois échelles et 10 composantes. L’échelle socio-territoriale était le point faible des exploitations hévéicoles. À l’inverse, l’échelle économique était le point fort pour toutes les exploitations. L’échelle agro-écologique est celle qui discriminait le mieux les trois types d’exploitations, suivie par l’échelle socio-territoriale. L’échelle économique n’était pas discriminante. De plus, les seules composantes présentant des différences entre les trois types d’exploitation étaient la diversité des productions et l’efficience des exploitations. Les trois types d’exploitation représentant des formes contrastées d’organisation de la production agricole ne sont finalement pas apparus très différents en termes de durabilité. Les exploitations familiales patronales avec la famille seulement impliquée dans la gestion seraient les moins durables. Pourtant, les exploitations patronales occupent une place croissante dans l’agriculture en Thaïlande. Si ces résultats sont confirmés à plus grande échelle, cela représente un problème pour la durabilité de l’hévéaculture en Thaïlande qui demanderait une intervention du gouvernement.

En France, la viticulture biologique connait une forte augmentation de ses surfaces concernées depuis plusieurs années. Ce développement rapide demande un accompagnement soigné afin d'assurer l'installation des viticulteurs biologiques et de permettre la poursuite de sa croissance. Rencontrant des difficultés techniques, les viticulteurs biologiques sont les acteurs de ce développement mais leurs actions restent souvent confidentielles alors qu'elles pourraient être bénéfiques pour la filière. Partant de ce constat, le projet VITINNOBIO a eu pour objectif de mettre en place une méthodologie pour détecter les pratiques atypiques mises en place par des viticulteurs sur trois bassins de production : Aquitaine, Bourgogne et Provence. Par la détection d'un grand nombre de pratiques, ce travail de recherche a permis de confirmer le dynamisme des vignerons pour l'amélioration de leurs systèmes. Ces pratiques ont ensuite été étudiées selon une méthodologie mise en place au cours du projet afin de permettre leur évaluation technico-socio-économique en vue de leur transfert à plus grande échelle., In France, organic viticulture experiences a rapid increase of areas conducted with organic practices, observed since several years. This quick development requires a good support in order to guaranty a suitable upholding and to stabilize this trend. Facing several technical difficulties, organic winemakers are directly the actors of this development but their ideas remain most of the time confidential whereas they could be a resource for other winemakers. Starting from this observation, VITINNOBIO project aimed at creating a method to detect unusual practices implemented across three wine regions : Aquitaine, Burgundy, Provence. With the detection of a high number of unusual practices, this work confirmed the great dynamices of winemakers for improving their systems. These practices were analysed according to a metho created during the project to assess their socio-eco-technical analysis targeting their transfer at a larger scale.

Session 2.4 - System drivers I; Mainly motivated by their search for autonomy (self-sufficiency an self-reliance), farmers interacting in farm machinery cooperatives (CUMA) in France develop new patterns of cooperation beyond the joint use of equipment and human resources. This work, supported by the interdisciplinary project CAPACCITA, aims at understanding to what extent farmers’ quest for autonomy in the CUMA network can be a key factor in the development of agro-ecological practices and production systems. The research is based on the agronomic and sociological study of 3 CUMA groups in France. It combines together three methodological approaches: (i) a comprehensive analysis of the technical changes operated by the farmers, their rationale and the consequences of such changes on the global farm functioning (ii) a characterization of the level of agroecologization of practices and trajectories based on the Efficiency-Substitution-Redesign approach (iii) an impact assessment of these changes on sustainability and autonomy, derived from the IDEA method. Results showed a great diversity of pathways of practices change, between groups and within each group. We showed a co-evolution of the ecologization of agricultural practices between different cultivation techniques. This dynamic approach made it possible to identify the key stages and levers of the agro-ecological transition, at the individual and collectives levels. The impact assessment revealed that farmers have gained more control in decision-making, more use of internal and territorial resources, but very few farmers have gained more economic autonomy. Thus, identifying levers and patterns of practices design to gain autonomy in CUMA groups brings very useful knowledge to support agroecological transition at territorial scale.

Chapitre 15; International audience; To support actors to migrate to more sustainable food systems, multi-criteria evaluation tools are required to explore the effects and impacts of technical and organizational innovations. In this chapter, we present two possible constructions and uses of such tools: the first involves support for agroecological transitions on farms, and the second aims to compare two food chain models, one local and the other global. These two examples allow us to address and discuss three methodological fronts: the taking into account of the multiple dimensions and properties of sustainable systems, in a search for comprehensiveness across environmental, economic and social dimensions; actor participation in identifying and developing evaluation criteria and indicators; and the manner in which to arrive at a final assessment through the choice of methods for measuring, scoring, weighting and aggregating indicators or performance calculations.

La réduction des risques de contamination des eaux de surface et souterraines par les herbicides est un enjeu important en région viticole méditerranéenne du fait de risques élevés liés à l’importance des écoulements de surface et aux usages d’herbicides. L’article présente une méthodologie d’évaluation par modélisation de stratégies d’entretien du sol choisies par un groupe d’experts pour réduire le ruissellement polluant par herbicides tout en préservant la production. La méthodologie est basée sur une chaîne de modèles permettant de simuler dans différents contextes climatiques, les itinéraires techniques d’entretien du sol, les dynamiques d’états de surface du sol, les flux de ruissellement polluant, les stress hydrique et azoté subis par la vigne et leurs impacts sur les rendements en raisin. Les résultats, discutés au regard des logiques d’action des viticulteurs du site étudié, le bassin du Rieurtord dans l’Hérault, montrent que la réduction d’usage d’herbicides est indispensable pour la réduction de la contamination des eaux, mais que les stratégies doivent comporter une certaine flexibilité d’application en fonction des années et des sols pour satisfaire les objectifs de production. Ils indiquent toutefois qu’à terme l’abandon total des herbicides est à rechercher pour garantir la qualité des masses d’eau issues du ruissellement., Limiting surface and groundwater contamination by herbicides is a major challenge in Mediterranean vineyards given the intense chemical weeding practices and high intensities of surface runoff flows. This paper presents a modelling approach for estimating the impact on both water contamination and grape yields of several soil treatment strategies chosen by a group of experts so as to restrict the use of herbicides. The modelling approach consists in a chain of models simulating, for different climatic scenarios, the order of agricultural operations, the change in soil surface conditions, surface runoff flows, grape yield gaps caused by water and nitrogen stresses. The results obtained on the case study of the Rieutord Catchment in south France show that a drastic reduction of herbicide application is essential for keeping water contamination below an acceptable level, but that some flexibility in the application of the strategies following the local soils and climatic is desirable to secure the grape yields. However in any case, it is suggested that only the complete ban of chemical weeding practices may in the end guaranty the good status at surface waters.

International audience; Canadian agricultural production systems are facing issues related to maintaining high crop yields and profitability while adopting beneficial management practices (BMPs) that mitigate their impact on the health of the environment. Since 2014, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has been collaborating on the development of an open innovation platform, namely the “L'Acadie-Lab” living laboratory, initiated by an interactive community of farmers, practitioners and researchers to increase the adoption of BMPs in the L'Acadie River watershed, in southern Quebec' Canada. So far, workshops were held featuring farmers, practitioners, scientists and other stakeholders. These workshops have revealed a disconnect between farmers’ expectations and research organisations' ability to provide a consistent array of practices and knowledge. To get new knowledge and technology adopted, consistent choices between various practices that interact on a range of spatial and temporal scales have to be proposed to the users and the economic and ecosystem benefits have to be demonstrated. In response to these issues, the authors propose the development and use of a participatory modelling approach as a tool for sharing the perspectives of researchers, practitioners and farmers on innovative practices to be adopted. The approach links the knowledge of researchers and certain modelling tools at the plot level or the farm level with ecosystem services simulation models at the landscape level to produce quantitative or semi-quantitative results. Farmers and advisors will play a special role in defining the scenarios to be simulated to ensure that their situations and concerns are reflected and to increase the commitment to innovation.

To assess the sustainability of agricultural systems at a regional scale with regards to possible changes in land use and cropping systems, designing simulation models to explore scenarios with stakeholders is a relevant approach. It implies coping with uncertainties from different areas, originating at both levels of imperfect data sets and misunderstood dynamics (due to incompleteness of knowledge and unexpected systemic effects). Additionally, dealing with various types of knowledge to co-design the model generates ambiguity from the simultaneous presence of multiple frames of reference about the system to be represented. On top of that, specifying scenarios to be explored with the simulation tool requires drawing knowledge-based, coherent pictures of the inherently uncertain future. All these dimensions of uncertainty merged in the context of a comodelling process that took place on a small French territory “Plateau de Valensole” in 2014-2016. About 30 participants (farmers, stakeholders, researchers) were involved during the process. For the design of a stylized spatial representation of the agro-ecological system, the construction of a farm typology, the specification of plausible scenarios of evolution and the choice of indicators for the assessment, different types of knowledge have been mobilized in different ways (collective workshops, individual interviews) and for different purposes (knowledge extracting or co-design). Other sources of information (regional databases and maps) were also used when knowledge was lacking or too uncertain. This methodological combination was found to be relevant to address the issue of tackling uncertainty in the modelling process. In this presentation, the simulation tool will also be presented, together with an example of the results obtained by simulating one scenario. (Texte intégral)

Ce papier s’inscrit comme une contribution au séminaire de lancement du Réseau Mixte Technologique Evaluation de la duRabilité des sYstèmes et Territoire AGricolEs (Erytage) lancé en France en juillet 2015. Il questionne les deux concepts que sont l’agriculture durable et l’exploitation agricole durable, à partir d’une large analyse de la littérature internationale, pour au final en discuter les définitions. Nous montrons l’incomplétude des définitions actuelles telles que recensées dans la littérature internationale et proposons deux nouvelles définitions pour qualifier ces deux concepts. La première partie revient sur les différentes conceptions du développement durable pour analyser les différentes postures proposées dans les définitions de l’agriculture durable. La seconde partie présente un état de l’art de la littérature de ce concept à partir d’une double analyse (chronologique et type d’interprétation). La troisième partie propose une nouvelle définition du concept d’agriculture durable basée à la fois sur ses principes et valeurs mais aussi sur les objectifs sociétaux associées. La dernière partie s’appuie sur les résultats d’une recherche sur le concept d’exploitation agricole durable pour proposer une définition élargie de l’exploitation agricole durable basée à la fois sur les principes et valeurs, sur les objectifs sociétaux et sur les propriétés associées à un tel système., This paper is a contribution to the launching seminar of the Technology Network Evaluation of the sustainability of agricultural systems and Territory (Erytage) held in France in July 2015. It discusses the concepts of sustainable agriculture and farm sustainability, from a broad analysis of the international literature down to the discussion of their definitions. We showed the incompleteness of the definitions based on the international literature and we propose two new definitions to characterize these two concepts. The first part takes a look at the different conceptions of sustainable development in order to study the different positions proposed so far in the definitions of sustainable agriculture. The second part shows a state of the art of the literature on this concept from a double analysis (a chronology and an interpretative typology). The third part suggests a new definition of sustainable agriculture drawn on both its principles and values but also on associated social objectives. The last part draws from the results of a research on the concept of sustainability farm to suggest a broadened definition of a sustainability farm based upon principles and values, social objectives and the properties associated to such sustainable system.

National audience; Cette recherche est réalisée dans le cadre du projet de recherche en partenariat CLIMATAC (ACcompagnement des acteurs de Territoires agricoles pour l’atténuation du changement CLIMAtique) mené sur le Plateau de Valensole (France, 04) par l'UMR Innovation (INRA-CIRAD). Le projet CLIMATAC s’efforce d’engager les représentants des principaux acteurs économiques et institutionnels du territoire ayant un lien avec l’agriculture ; l’objectif est de co-construire avec eux un diagnostic du territoire et d’explorer des scénarios possibles pour le développement durable de celui-ci. Nous présentons ici une analyse de la constitution et du fonctionnement du réseau socio-technique que rend possible l’avancement du projet CLIMATAC. Pour cela, nous mobilisons la théorie de l'acteur réseaux et nous montrons la double utilité de cette approche ; d'un côté elle se révèle performante pour comprendre les allez retour dans la stabilisation du réseau de partenaires et d'un autre coté elle aide l’équipe qui conduit la recherche dans une une posture réflexive concernant la conduite de la démarche.

In Madagascar, rice is the major staple food. The availability of fresh water for irrigation and the temperature at some plant stages are critical variables for the farmers' choice of cropping systems and their self-sufficiency in rice. Climate change is expected to affect the rainy season and temperature, potentially impacting the crop yields. Participatory research and development take into account local knowledge and innovations to support the co-development of local adaptation strategies. We propose a methodological framework for the participatory development of scenarios with farmers and stakeholders to identify and evaluate possible adaptation strategies to climate and other global and local changes. The idea is to understand the farmers' perceptions to risk and their way to cope with technical change. First, we conducted farmers' interviews to understand the current systems and constraints to create a farm typology. Then focus groups were held to identify the main drivers of change and develop, in full partnership with local population, four scenarios related to climate change, infrastructure, access to market and labour availability. These scenarios were then applied in the context of four farms selected to represent each significant farm of the typology. For each scenario, some adaptation strategies (e.g. new varieties, crop management, diversification of production, water control in the valley) were selected and further assessed with the farmers using a farm model to simulate the impacts on relevant indicators. This methodological approach showed that combining scenarios and models in a participatory approach effectively tackles the issue of climate change impact and possible mitigation strategies rooting solutions linked to the local social, economic and resource constraints. International audience; Farmers are facing a great number of constraints that complicate the process of farming system (FS) adaptation. In the Camargue region, Southern France, the farmers must notably (i) adapt to the Common Agricultural Policy reform that implies the suppression of the coupled payment for rice, (ii) reduce pesticide use, (iii) and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while (iv) improving energy efficiency and (v) ensuring food provision for local and global market. To account for these multiple objectives in the design of new (FS), prototyping by experts and modeling have proved their usefulness. In this paper, we present the complementary application of these two approaches to design sustainable FS in the Camargue.

En Camargue, dans le delta du Rhône au sud de la France, le riz irrigué est la principale céréale cultivée. Il joue un rôle clé dans la constitution des systèmes de culture et contribue à la mise en valeur des terres et à l’équilibre hydrologique du delta. La présente étude vise à formaliser sous forme d’un modèle à base de règles de décision les comportements des agriculteurs en matière d’assolement et à utiliser celui-ci pour évaluer les conséquences sur les surfaces rizicultivées de changements de contexte économique et de systèmes techniques. Une analyse des assolements pratiqués par les riziculteurs camarguais a permis d’identifier et de caractériser les contraintes et facteurs influençant les choix des cultures, leur surface et répartition dans le territoire de l’exploitation agricole. Quatre scénarios d’évolution des systèmes rizicoles ont été développés en croisant deux situations socio-économiques (attractivité économique faible ou forte du riz) et deux contextes d’évolution des pratiques des agriculteurs : maintien en agriculture conventionnelle (AC) ou conversion à l’agriculture biologique (AB). La surface totale régionale cultivée en riz irrigué a été calculée pour chaque scénario. Les résultats indiquent qu’en cas de contexte économique défavorable au riz, une forte diminution (en comparaison à la situation de référence de 2010) de la sole rizicole est probable avec des conséquences sur la fertilité des sols, que ce soit en AB ou AC. En contexte économique favorable, la surface rizicole maximale estimée en AB est surtout limitée par les impasses techniques rencontrées pour le contrôle des adventices, et par la difficulté de réaliser des rotations en zones basses sensibles aux remontées de sel., In the Rhône River Delta of Camargue, Southern France, irrigated lowland rice is the main crop. It plays a key role in cropping systems and contributes to land use development and the hydrological balance of the delta. This study focuses on the implementation of a model based on decision rules, with the aim of representing farmers’ cropping plans and to use in assessing the consequences of changes in the economic context and in technical systems in terms of irrigated rice area. An analysis of current rice growers’ cropping plans in Camargue was carried out in order to identify the constraints and factors influencing the choice of crops, their surfaces and their spatial distribution. Four scenarios of evolution of rice cropping systems were developed by combining changes in the socio-economic context (weak or strong economic attractiveness of rice) and evolution of farmers’ practices (organic or conventional agriculture). The area under rice cultivation was estimated for each scenario. Results indicate that in an unfavourable economic situation for rice, a significant reduction of the rice area (in comparison to the 2010 area) could occur, not without consequences on soil fertility, in either conventional or organic agriculture. In a favourable economic context, the estimated maximum rice area in organic agriculture appears to be mainly limited by technical problems experienced in weed control, and by the difficulties of implementing rotations in lowlands which are sensitive to salinization.

National audience; Our paper highlights questions addressed by ecologization processes in agriculture to agronomic sciences dealing with the study of farmer practices and the design of new farming systems. Since the aim of ecologization is the withdrawal or reduction of the use of inputs or of specific technologies (pesticides, soil tillage) and their substitution by natural processes and natural auxiliaries, we point out the interest for agronomic science to take into account the action of natural entities besides that of farmers. Based on a review of founding texts in agronomy, we highlight the fact that these natural auxiliaries or processes have so far been mainly considered as limiting factors. We also show that the attention paid by agronomists to farmer rationale has tended to minimize attention paid to biological entities and processes and contributed to developing an anthropocentric analysis of production systems. We insist on the fact that the move of agricultural systems toward more environmentally friendly and efficient practices makes it necessary to incorporate them in the set of ‘actors’ involved in the production processes beside farmers and their technical interventions. Our reflection draws on the theoretical proposals of the actor-network theory in sociology, following the symmetry principle which invites to consider in an equal way human and non-human entities in sociotechnical dynamics. We then propose guidelines for reflection, stressing in priority the need for a re-delineation of what may be considered as action and work within the production process. We insist on viewing observation as a form of action and on rethinking arrangements between human inaction and biological processes. We also urge to consider new temporalities and spatiality in the analysis framework, including the long-term properties of bio-ecological dynamics and the integration of cultivated fields in wider ecological spaces.; Dans cet article nous mettons en lumière les questionnements que l’écologisation des pratiques agricoles adresse aux cadres conceptuels de l’agronomie visant à comprendre lesdites pratiques et à concevoir de nouveaux systèmes de production. En considérant que l’écologisation repose souvent sur le retrait ou la réduction de l’usage d’intrants ou d’opérations techniques, et sur leur substitution par des processus et des auxiliaires naturels, nous pointons la nécessité pour l’agronomie de considérer en tant que telle l’action d’objets de la nature, et non plus seulement celle de l’agriculteur. À partir d’une analyse de textes fondateurs de l’agronomie des pratiques en France, nous montrons que ces objets et processus naturels ont jusqu’alors été considérés en priorité comme des facteurs limitants. Nous posons alors plusieurs pistes de réflexion pour les intégrer dans l’analyse, grâce notamment à la mobilisation de réflexions issues de la sociologie de l’innovation ou de la sociologie du travail. Nous invitons ainsi à redéfinir le périmètre de l’action considérée, dans le temps, dans l’espace et dans la diversité des entités qu’elle engage.

En Camargue (France) la riziculture biologique est apparue de manière marginale à la fin des années 1970. Au milieu de la décennie 1990, la baisse des prix du riz conventionnel a incité une vingtaine de riziculteurs camarguais à convertir en partie ou totalement leur système de production agricole. L’agriculture biologique (AB) rencontre aujourd’hui un développement important au niveau national et international et la riziculture biologique s’inscrit dans cette dynamique ; en Camargue elle concernait, en 2012, 6% de la surface rizicultivée et une trentaine de producteurs. Malgré cet engouement, le conseil agricole est très peu présent pour faciliter la transition. Aussi, c’est pour accompagner les riziculteurs dans leur décision de changement de pratiques et dans l’adaptation des techniques au cahier des charges de l’AB, que l’INRA a développé une plateforme de recherche-développement visant à stimuler les démarches de recherche participative, interdisciplinaire et interinstitutionnelle. Cinq phases structurent les actions mises en oeuvre au cours de la période 2000-2012 et ce à différents échelles et niveaux d’organisation : parcelle, exploitation agricole, territoire, bassin rizicole européen. Ces actions permettent de combiner des méthodes et des outils basés sur des enquêtes en exploitations et des diagnostics agronomiques, des expérimentations « au champ » et l’évaluation de scénarios régionaux construits avec les acteurs du territoire. Les résultats obtenus permettent d’améliorer les connaissances sur le fonctionnement des systèmes de production rizicole biologique et d’accompagner les riziculteurs biologiques et conventionnels ainsi que les acteurs de la filière et du territoire dans leurs décisions et plans d’action. Ces connaissances sont aussi mobilisées pour nourrir des modules de formation initiale et professionnelle proposés à des élèves ingénieurs et aux agriculteurs.

International audience; Concerned by the impacts of agriculture on the environment, an increasing number of farms move to organic agriculture. This change in their evolution is more or less easy to manage, depending on their biophysical and economic context but also on their specific dynamics. In fact, some observers are worried about the survival of farms which convert without being sufficiently prepared, especially as the knowledge and tools needed to monitor such a change are not all operational. Numerous studies have been made on the multiple dimensions of the process of change occurring during the conversion, but few analyzed it with an integrated approach. Based on the adapted ESR framework (Hill and MacRae, 1995), we present in this article the preliminary results of a multi-scale integrated analysis of the changes occurring during the conversion to organic farming and highlight the diversity of these changes.

Workshop 6.4 Integrated simulation modeling in farming system research; Models are common tools used for scenario assessment of agricultural systems. In this paper we present the combined application of three modeling approaches for participatory integrated assessment of scenarios for agriculture in the Camargue area (South of France). By means of a land use change analysis (LUC), an agent-based model (ABM), and a bio-economic model (BEM), we assessed with farmers and other stakeholders of the area scenarios related to the CAP reform and the possible extension of alternative, more environmentally friendly, farming systems. The LUC analysis was used as a tool to characterize, from a retrospective point of view, the capacity for change of farming systems. By identifying and measuring the main biophysical constraints and actual socio-economic situation, we were able to initiate the discussion with farmers and other stakeholders inside the Camargue region. The ABM has proved to be a powerful tool to organize and focus the collective discussions on possible adaptation strategies of farming systems. Finally the use of the BEM helped to discuss with stakeholders some plausible and desired scenarios for agricultural systems in the region. The combined application of the three modeling approaches is embedded in a more general framework for Prospective and Participatory Integrated Assessment of Agricultural Systems (PIAAS). In PIAAS, stakeholders play a central role in the definition of scenarios and indicators for their evaluation, the co-development of models, and their use for scenario assessment. Specific results for scenarios related to different subsidies levels for rice under the CAP reform and the reduction of pesticide use are presented as well as the evaluation of the whole framework by local stakeholders.

La diffusion des innovations techniques en agriculture dépend à la fois du « milieu » pour lequel la nouveauté technique a été conçue et élaborée, mais également des caractéristiques intrinsèques et des propriétés de celle-ci. De nombreux travaux empiriques et théoriques ont abordé les dynamiques d’innovation de cette manière, y compris dans le cas d’une innovation à caractère environnementale comme la protection intégrée des cultures (IPM). Entre les deux, les canaux par lesquels ces nouveautés techniques sont présentées, expliquées, promues par les acteurs-prescripteurs du secteur agricole ont peu fait l’objet d’attention. Nous avons analyser l’intensité et la manière avec laquelle les acteurs de la R&D communiquent, via les canaux officiels écrits (presse spécialisée, internet …), sur les innovations techniques à caractère environnemental, dans le secteur viti-vinicole. A partir d‘une sélection de mediae observés sur une période de temps circonscrite, nous avons analysé, grâce à des logiciels d’analyse de corpus de textes, les contenus des articles et documents. Les résultats nous permettent de mettre en évidence et discuter les choix faits par les acteurs-perscripteurs en matière de communication et de valider l’existence d’un syndrôme de « lock in » au sein du secteur viti-vinicole., The diffusion of technical innovations in the agricultural sector depends on the characteristics of the socio-economic and biophysical environment for which they have been set up ; likewise the features of the innovative objects pay a major role. Numerous empirical and theoretical works have studied innovation dynamics with these perspectives, including in the case of more environmentally-friendly practices like integrated pest management (IPM). In between these two approaches, less attention has been paid to the channels through which these innovations are described, explained and promoted by the actors in charge of making advice and prescriptions in the agricultural sector. We analyzed the frequency and the characteristics of the messages dealing with agro-environmental innovations, spread by these actors in the official mediae (specialized press, internet …) of the vine-wine sector. Starting with a selection of mediae observed during a particular period of time, we analyzed, with help of appropriate software, the contents of the documents and articles. The results underline the strategies of communication of the actors and allow us to discuss these choices; beyond it validates the existence of a "lock in" syndrome in the vinewine sector.

International audience; The development of organic farming is nowadays seen as a possible solution to meet the different objectives of sustainable development. In the Camargue, South of France, environmental issues are strongly linked with agriculture, and stakeholders are in need of integrated approaches to analyse the plausible impacts of alternative farming systems at multiple scales, particularly at regional scale. Evaluating alternative farming systems at multiple scales requires the quantification of different indicators meaningful for different actors in support of the negotiation and decision making process. With this challenge in mind, we developed a framework for Prospective, Integrated, Multiscale and Participative Assessment of Agricultural Systems (PIMPAAS), combining modelling tools and stakeholder meetings. In this paper we present the proposed framework based on the possible complementarities of two modelling approaches using scenario analysis (Bioeconomic models and multi-agents systems) for a multiscale, integrated and participatory evaluation. We also present the progresses made in the identification of scales of analysis in relation to actors' objectives and aspirations, in the description of current and alternatives farming systems and in the identification of useful indicators at different scales. The list of the main stakeholders is presented and the objectives and consultation procedures are highlighted with examples. First results concerning the use of crop models are also presented. We conclude on the generic aspects of the approach for a prospective, integrated, multiscale and participatory evaluation of the extension of alternative agro-ecosystem such as organic farming.

The objective of this contribution is to critically review such types of methods and tools showing their unsuitability for common cases in the context of French agriculture such as (i) farms in transition phases or aiming at radical changes in the farming activities, (ii) multifunctional farms or farms strongly dependent upon off-farm activities and (iii) farms inserted in a territory where their sustainability depends on the spatial and organizational arrangements among different farms. The contribution concludes with some principle to develop evaluation approaches to overcome some of the limitations of existing methods.

Their ways of up-scaling are complementary: BEM seems efficient for up-scaling from field to farm and field to region, whereas MAS allow up-scaling without aggregation from farm to region. We believe that the combination of the two approaches will enable highly participatory evaluations of alternative farming systems. Using the results of this analysis, we recommend using a combination of MAS and BEM in a global framework. We are currently implementing a framework in the Camargue to test this combination and to evaluate its suitability for prospective, multiscale, multicriteria and participatory evaluation.

La communication technique des acteurs sur des changements de pratiques concourant à un moindre usage des pesticides a été étudiée en grandes cultures et en viticulture. Elle apparaît abondante, mais concentrée sur un nombre limité de pratiques alternatives : les outils d'aide à la décision pour raisonner les traitements, le désherbage mécanique, les variétés résistantes aux maladies (grandes cultures) et l'enherbement (viticulture). De nombreux obstacles au développement des solutions préventives sont mis en avant par les acteurs : insuffisance des références agronomiques et des garanties de performances offertes aux agriculteurs, difficultés de mise en place d’organisations collectives au niveau de territoires, incompatibilité avec les exigences des filières, priorité accordée aux volumes de production. Les pesticides restent ainsi considérés comme le moyen privilégié de lutte contre les bio-agresseurs ; a contrario, l’absence de solution chimique semble être l’un des moteurs les plus puissants de la mise au point et de la diffusion de techniques alternatives. Au-delà, c'est l'interdépendance des stratégies des acteurs qui bloque certaines évolutions de pratiques. Chaque acteur organise sa stratégie en fonction de celle des autres, et considère qu’il peut difficilement en changer tant que celle des autres n'évolue pas. A court terme, seules les voies de réduction de l’utilisation de pesticides qui n’impliquent pas de "reconception" des systèmes de culture sont donc envisagées. Enfin, le diagnostic se traduit par des pistes pour l'action publique. Il apparaît en particulier indispensable d’agir sur l’ensemble du système socio-technique, notamment en aidant à l'émergence de nouvelles filières pour rediversifier les espèces cultivées, en soutenant l’effort de "reconception" de systèmes de culture et le développement de dynamiques territoriales et collectives., Stakeholders’ documents concerning technical changes which allow pesticide use reduction were studied for field crops and wine crops. The documents contain a large amount of such references, however connected with a narrow range of technical changes: decision support systems for treatment optimisation, mechanical weeding, diseases resistant varieties (field crops), and sowing between wine rows. The stakeholders point out that preventive methods face obstacles such as the lack of agronomical references and performance warranties of the techniques, the difficulties in development of collective organisations at a landscape scale, the incompatibility with agrofood production chains, and the overriding will to preserve or increase production amounts. Pesticides are still the mainstream way to control pests. The lack of chemical solution seems to be a powerful enhancer of the conception and diffusion of alternative practices. Moreover, the interdependence of stakeholders’ strategies blocks certain technical changes. Each stakeholder’s strategy is conditioned by strategies of others and is therefore limited or unable to evolve. In the short term, the majority of the stakeholders focus on methods that do not redesign current cropping systems. Ideas for public action can be deducted from this diagnosis. It is necessary to act on the whole socio-technical system: for instance by supporting the emergence of market opportunities for minor crops, by sustaining the redesigning of cropping systems and by developing collective local actions.
