190. En studie i spelvegetation : Hur man kan minimera skuggor mellan korsande polygonplan

Abstract

Den här rapporten fokuserar på att ta fram en grund i hur skapandet av spelvegetation med polygonplan som korsar varandra kan göras, utan att få problem med oönskade artefakter och skuggor. Det finns givetvis flertalet metoder för att lösa detta som varierar beroende på vilken typ av ljussättning som implementerats i spelet samt vilken spelmotor som används. I den här undersökningen kommer endast en spelmotor med grund ljussättning användas.Målet var att undersöka flertalet metoder för att nå det önskade resultatet, vilket var fungerande spelvegetation med korsande polygonplan utan några skuggor eller artefakter. Moment som inte ingick i den här undersökningen var ingående undersökningar i hur vertexnormaler fungerar på en mer matematisk nivå, samt hur dessa tekniker kan överföras till andra spelmotorer. För att uppnå dessa mål gjordes en del undersökningar i hur spelvegetations geometri och vertexnormaler påverkar resultatet, samt materialinställningar i den valda spelmotorn.Vikten av en klar bild av vilken typ av spelvegetation som ska skapas innan arbetet påbörjas visade sig tidigt i undersökningen. Organiska och mjuka former är att föredra, och det är även viktigt att kontrollera hur vertexnormalernas riktning påverkar objektet i den valda spelmotorn. I själva spelmotor är det materialet på objektet som har störst inverkan på resultatet, framförallt materialets underlagsfärg. Genom att följa dessa riktlinjer kan målet av spelvegetation, med korsande polygonplan, utan alltför tydliga skuggor och artefakter uppnås., This report focuses on establishing a foundation in how to create game foliage with criss-crossing polygon planes, without getting unwanted artefacts or shadows. There are several different methods to achieve this depending on what kind of lighting the game has implemented, but also which game engine is being used. In this research, only one game engine with basic lighting will be used.The goal was to research several different methods that would give the desired result, which as stated above, was to create working game assets with criss-crossing polygon planes without artefacts. Stages that are not included in this research are how vertex normals work from a mathematics perspective, and how these methods would work in other game engines. Research was focused on how geometry and vertex normals affect the object visual appearance, as well as the impact the material settings in the games engine provided.The survey quickly showed the importance of having a clear vision on what type of game foliage was sought to be created before the work began. Organic and soft shapes are preferred, and it is also important to check how the vertex normals affect the object in the selected game engine. In the game engine itself, it is the material on the object that has the greatest impact on the result, especially the material's subsurface colour. By following these guidelines, the goal was achieving game foliage with less visible shadows and artefact.

191. Criss-cross methods: A fresh view on pivot algorithms

Abstract

Criss-cross methods are pivot algorithms that solve linear programming problems in one phase starting with any basic solution. The first finite criss-cross method was invented by Chang, Terlaky and Wang independently. Unlike the simplex method that follows a monotonic edge path on the feasible region, the trace of a criss-cross method is neither monotonic (with respect to the objective function) nor feasibility preserving. The main purpose of this paper is to present mathematical ideas and proof techniques behind finite criss-cross pivot methods. A recent result on the existence of a short admissible pivot path to an optimal basis is given, indicating shortest pivot paths from any basis might be indeed short for criss-cross type algorithms. The origins and the history of criss-cross methods are also touched upon

Abstract

UNLABELLED: Gonorrhea, caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae (Gc), is characterized by neutrophilic influx to infection sites. Gc has developed mechanisms to resist killing by neutrophils that include modifications to its surface lipooligosaccharide (LOS). One such LOS modification is sialylation: Gc sialylates its terminal LOS sugars with cytidine-5-monophosphate-N-acetylneuraminic acid, which is scavenged from the host using LOS sialyltransferase (Lst) since Gc cannot make its sialic acid. Sialylation enables sensitive strains of Gc to resist complement-mediated killing in a serum-dependent manner. However, little is known about the contribution of sialylation to complement-independent, direct Gc-neutrophil interactions. In the absence of complement, we found sialylated Gc expressing opacity-associated (Opa) proteins decreased the oxidative burst and granule exocytosis from primary human neutrophils. In addition, sialylated Opa+ Gc survived better than vehicle treated or Δlst Gc when challenged with neutrophils. However, Gc sialylation did not significantly affect Opa-dependent association with or internalization of Gc by neutrophils. Previous studies have implicated sialic acid-binding immunoglobulin-type lectins (Siglecs) in modulating neutrophil interactions with sialylated Gc. Blocking neutrophil Siglecs with antibodies that bind to their extracellular domains eliminated the ability of sialylated Opa+ Gc to suppress the oxidative burst and resist neutrophil killing. These findings highlight a new role for sialylation in Gc evasion of human innate immunity, with implications for the development of vaccines and therapeutics for gonorrhea. IMPORTANCE: Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacterium that causes gonorrhea, is an urgent global health concern due to increasing infection rates, widespread antibiotic resistance, and its ability to thwart protective immune responses. The mechanisms by which Gc subverts protective immune responses remain poorly characterized. One way N. gonorrhoeae evades human immunity is by adding sialic acid that is scavenged from the host onto its lipooligosaccharide, using the sialyltransferase Lst. Here, we found that sialylation enhances N. gonorrhoeae survival from neutrophil assault and inhibits neutrophil activation, independently of the complement system. Our results implicate bacterial binding of sialic acid-binding lectins (Siglecs) on the neutrophil surface, which dampens neutrophil antimicrobial responses. This work identifies a new role for sialylation in protecting N. gonorrhoeae from cellular innate immunity, which can be targeted to enhance the human immune response in gonorrhea.

Abstract

Background: The objective of this study was to evaluate if imbalance influences complication rates, radiological outcomes, and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) following adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. Methods: ASD patients with baseline and 2-year radiographic and PROMs were included. Patients were grouped according to whether they answered yes or no to a recent history of pre-operative loss of balance. The groups were propensity-matched by age, pelvic incidence-lumbar lordosis (PI-LL), and surgical invasiveness score. Results: In total, 212 patients were examined (106 in each group). Patients with gait imbalance had worse baseline PROM measures, including Oswestry disability index (45.2 vs. 36.6), SF-36 mental component score (44 vs. 51.8), and SF-36 physical component score (p < 0.001 for all). After 2 years, patients with gait imbalance had less pelvic tilt correction (-1.2 vs. -3.6°, p = 0.039) for a comparable PI-LL correction (-11.9 vs. -15.1°, p = 0.144). Gait imbalance patients had higher rates of radiographic proximal junctional kyphosis (PJK) (26.4% vs. 14.2%) and implant-related complications (47.2% vs. 34.0%). After controlling for age, baseline sagittal parameters, PI-LL correction, and comorbidities, patients with imbalance had 2.2-times-increased odds of PJK after 2 years. Conclusions: Patients with a self-reported loss of balance/unsteady gait have significantly worse PROMs and higher risk of PJK.

Through meticulous research and critical design phases, the project successfully achieved its objectives, surpassing initial goals and setting new standards for home security.Objectives & Research Findings:The project aimed to address the critical needs of homeowners, tenants/renters, and property managers by focusing on damage-free installation, easy setup, remote monitoring, and encrypted data transmission. Analysis of burglary statistics emphasized the vulnerability of inadequate door-locking mechanisms, while exploration of sensor technologies identified viable options for detecting door status. Patent analysis provided insights into prior art and innovation trends, guiding design decisions and strategies for intellectual property protection.Critical Design Phase & Achievements:Detailed engineering analysis, testing protocols, risk assessment, and compliance considerations were conducted. Hardware components were carefully selected and tested for optimal performance, and housing units were designed for durability and practical installation. Non-invasive sensors facilitated risk-free installation, while battery-powered sensors ensured portability and longevity. Invasive sensor options were developed for permanent home installation, and user-friendly mobile/web applications provided real-time property security status with secure and encrypted data transmission.Future Recommendations & Conclusion:Future recommendations include extending battery life, enhancing data protection measures, implementing a notification system within the application, and ensuring compatibility with other smart home systems. The project demonstrates how innovative security solutions can evolve alongside technology to meet user needs effectively, setting new benchmarks for convenience, flexibility, and data protection in home security systems.
