Rice straw can adsorb Cd(II) from wastewater, and modification of rice straw may improve its adsorption efficiency. The rice straw powder (Sp) from the direct pulverization of rice straw was used as the control, the rice straw ash (Sa), biochar (Sa), and modified rice straw (Ms) were prepared by ashing, pyrolysis and citric acid modification, respectively, and all of them were examined as adsorbents for Cd(II) in this study. Batch adsorption experiments were adopted to systematically compare the adsorption capacities of rice straw materials prepared with different modification methods for Cd(II) from aqueous solution under different levels of initial Cd(II) concentration (0–800 mg·L−1), temperature (298, 308, and 318 K), contact time (0–1440 min), pH value (2–10), and ionic strength (0–0.6 mol·L−1). The results indicated that the modification method affected the adsorption of Cd(II) by changing the specific surface area (SSA), Si content, surface morphology, and O-containing functional group of rice straw. Compared with Sp, Ms held more surface O–H, aliphatic and aromatic groups, while Sa had more phenolic, C–O (or C–O–C), and Si–O groups, and Sb held more C–O (or C–O–C) and Si–O groups; besides, Sa, Sb, and Ms had larger SSA than Sp. Adsorption capacity of the four adsorbents for Cd(II) increased and gradually became saturated with the increase in the initial Cd(II) concentration (0–800 mg·L−1). The adsorption capacity of Cd(II) was significantly higher at 318 K than 298 K and 308 K, regardless of the adsorbent type. Sa had the largest SSA (192.38 m2·g−1) and the largest adsorption capacity for Cd(II). When the initial Cd2+ concentration was at 800 mg·L−1, the Cd(II) adsorption amount reached as high as 68.7 mg·g−1 with Sa at 318 K. However, the SSA of Sp was only 1.83 m2·g−1, and it had the least adsorption capacity for Cd(II). Only the adsorption of Cd(II) upon Sb at 298 K was spontaneous, and surprisingly, all other adsorptions were nonspontaneous. These adsorptions were all chemical, and were favorable, exothermic and order-increasing processes. The pseudo-second-order model showed a strong fit to the kinetics of Cd(II) adsorption by the four adsorbents. The adsorption capacities of Cd(II) by the adsorbents were less at low pH, and all were enhanced with the increase of initial pH value (2–10) in the solution. The inhibiting effect on Cd(II) adsorption due to the increase in ionic strength was greater with Sa, Sb, and Ms than that under Sp. The rice straw ash prepared by ashing unexpectedly had greater adsorption capacity for Cd(II) than the biochar and citric acid modified rice straw. The optimum condition for Cd(II) adsorption was established as the temperature of 318 K, initial Cd(II) concentration of 800 mg·L−1, contact time of 240 min, and no Na(I) interference regardless of absorbent. In conclusion, rice straw ash shows the greatest potential of being applied to paddy fields for the remediation of Cd(II) pollution so as to reduce the risk of Cd(II) enrichment in rice grains and straws. Background. Tumor immunotherapy and immunological checkpoint-related proteins are research hotspots. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is the main treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Hence, the evaluation of its effect is very important. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between the concentrations of soluble checkpoint proteins, plasma EBV-DNA, and cytokines in NPC patients treated with IMRT. Methods. In this study, the plasma samples of 37 NPC patients and 40 healthy controls were collected. Luminex MAGPIX was used to detect the concentrations of 32 plasma targets, including soluble programmed cell death 1 (sPD-1). RT-qPCR was used to measure EBV-DNA. Results. The concentrations of 33 plasma targets were detected in NPC patients before and after IMRT to explore the changes after IMRT. The results showed that IMRT could increase the expression of sPD-1 and significantly reduce the level of EBV-DNA in the plasma of NPC patients. The expression level of sPD-1 in TNM I/II patients was significantly higher than that in III/IV patients. Besides, the concentrations of 12 other targets were significantly different after IMRT, including LAG-3, PD-L1, TIM-3, IFN-γ, IL-12p70, IL-1β, IL-5, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-10, IL-17A, and IL-22. High sPD-1 patients had longer survival than those with low sPD-1. Also, patients with lower EBV-DNA and TNM grades I and II/III had longer survival than those with higher EBV-DNA or TNM IV. Conclusions. This study demonstrated that the concentration of sPD-1 was significantly increased and EBV-DNA was significantly reduced in the NPC patients after IMRT. Plasma EBV-DNA level was a highly specific and sensitive biomarker for NPC diagnosis. Both sPD-1 expression and EBV-DNA concentration in plasma were related to the survival of patients. Sheep milk is the most important feed resource for newborn lambs and an important food resource for humans. Sheep milk production and ingredients are influenced by genetic and environmental factors. In this study, we implemented selection signature analysis using Illumina Ovine SNP50 BeadChip data of 78 meat Lacaune and 103 milk Lacaune sheep, which have similar genetic backgrounds, from the Sheep HapMap project to identify candidate genes related to ovine milk traits. Since different methods can detect different variation types and complement each other, we used a haplotype-based method (hapFLK) to implement selection signature analysis. The results revealed six selection signature regions showing signs of being selected (P<0.001): chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 6, 13 and 18. In addition, 38 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to sheep milk performance were identified in selection signature regions, which contain 334 candidate genes. Of those, SUCNR1 (succinate receptor 1) and PPARGC1A (PPARG coactivator 1 alpha) may be the most significant genes that affect sheep milking performance, which supply a significant indication for future studies to investigate candidate genes that play an important role in milk production and quality. The CHYR (CHY ZINC-FINGER AND RING FINGER PROTEIN) proteins have been functionally characterized in iron regulation and stress response in Arabidopsis, rice and Populus. However, their roles in soybean have not yet been systematically investigated. Here, in this study, 16 GmCHYR genes with conserved Zinc_ribbon, CHY zinc finger and Ring finger domains were obtained and divided into three groups. Moreover, additional 2–3 hemerythrin domains could be found in the N terminus of Group III. Phylogenetic and homology analysis of CHYRs in green plants indicated that three groups might originate from different ancestors. Expectedly, GmCHYR genes shared similar conserved domains/motifs distribution within the same group. Gene expression analysis uncovered their special expression patterns in different soybean tissues/organs and under various abiotic stresses. Group I and II members were mainly involved in salt and alkaline stresses. The expression of Group III members was induced/repressed by dehydration, salt and alkaline stresses, indicating their diverse roles in response to abiotic stress. Simple Summary: The deleted in azoospermia-like (DAZL) is an RNA binding protein coding gene in autosomal, playing important roles in testicular development and gametogenesis. In this paper, we found that DAZL is extremely highly expressed in testis compared with other organs and reaches to a peak at sex maturity (6-month old) in testis. Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within DAZL were found to have significant effect on the variation coefficient between left and right epididymis weight. The deleted in azoospermia-like (DAZL) gene encoding an RNA binding protein is pivotal in gametogenesis in lots of species and also acts as a pre-meiosis marker. The current study was conducted to detect expression profiles and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of DAZL in sheep using qPCR, DNA-pooled sequencing, improved multiplex ligase detection reaction (iMLDR®) and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) methods. The results confirmed that ovine DAZL showed the highest expression level at six-months of age across five developmental stage. At six-month stage, DAZL expressed primarily in testis across seven tissues analyzed. The abundance of DAZL in the large-testis group is higher than that in the small-testis group although it is not significant. In addition, six SNPs (SNP1-SNP6) were identified in DAZL. Of those, SNP1 (p < 0.05) and SNP6 (p < 0.01) were significantly correlated with the variation coefficient between left and right epididymis weight (VCTW). The current study implies DAZL may play important roles in testicular development and its SNPs are associated with testicular parameters, which supply important indicators for ram selection at early stage. Simple Summary: Increasing litter size is critical for the intensive sheep production system. Genetic marker-assisted selection (MAS) based on proven molecular indicators could enhance the efficacy of sheep selection with improving litter size traits. Many single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked with litter size in Hu sheep and Small-tailed Han sheep have been identified. However, they usually explain a small portion of genetic variation and additional genetic markers linked with litter size have not been found. The present study investigated the potential SNPs in ten genes as candidate markers for improved litter size in sheep. As a result, nine SNPs in six out of ten genes can be served as useful genetic markers to improve the selection of litter size since they are significantly associated with litter size either in Hu sheep or Small-tailed Han sheep. Further, a combined haplotypes analysis of the two loci (LIFR: g.35862868C>T and LIFR: g.35862947G>T) revealed that H2H3 (CTTT) combined haplotypes had the largest litter size than the rest combined haplotypes and more than those with either mutation alone in Small-tailed Han sheep. Our knowledge is essential to implement the MAS in sheep and further to increase the profitability in the sheep industry. Hu sheep and Small-tailed Han sheep are the most widely raised and most famous maternal sheep breeds in China, which are known for precocious puberty, perennial oestrus and high fecundity (1–6 lambs each parity). Therefore, it is crucial to increase litter size of these two breeds for intensive sheep industry. The objective of this study was to identify potential genetic markers linked with sheep litter size located at ten genes. This study collected blood sample of 537 Hu sheep and 420 Small-tailed Han sheep with litter size of first parity. The average litter sizes in Hu sheep and Small-tailed Han sheep were 2.21 and 1.93. DNA-pooling sequencing method was used for detecting the potential single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in ten genes related to follicle development and female reproduction. SNPscan® was used for individually genotyping. As a result, a total of 78 putative SNPs in nine out of ten candidate genes (except NOG) were identified. In total, 50 SNPs were successfully genotyped in Hu sheep and Small-tailed Han sheep. After quality control, a total of 42 SNPs in Hu sheep and 44 SNPs in Small-tailed Han sheep were finally used for further analysis. Association analysis revealed that nine SNPs within six genes (KIT: g.70199073A>G, KITLG: g.124520653G>C, ADAMTS1: g.127753565T>C, ADAMTS1: g.127754640G>T, NCOA1: g.31928165C>T, NCOA1: g.32140565G>A, LIFR: g.35862868C>T, LIFR: g.35862947G>T and NGF: g.91795933T>C) were significantly associated with litter size in Hu sheep or Small-tailed Han sheep. A combined haplotypes analysis of the two loci (LIFR: g.35862868C>T and LIFR: g.35862947G>T) revealed that H2H3 (CTTT) combined haplotypes had the largest litter size than the rest combined haplotypes and more than those with either mutation alone in Small-tailed Han sheep.
