Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore various types of research materials in Indian institutional repositories. Design/methodology/approach – The repositories are identified from the Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR). The repository sites were visited to collect the data necessary for the study. Findings – The present study reveals that barring a few repositories the collections of most of the repositories are very low. The percentage of archived materials is high for journal papers, and moderate for conference papers/thesis. However it is very low for preprints/working papers, teaching resources and patents. At one side India is marching towards becoming the knowledge based society in present era and at the other side the importance of librarianship and LIS professionals is growing rapidly world widely. Due to this the new changes and the new challenges have been also emerging in librarianship, thus, there is a need to consider and give due importance to the adaptation of these changes for the purpose of sustainability and survival. DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology (DJLIT) is more than three decades old journal, published in the field of library and information Sciences, on bimonthly basis, by Defense Science Documentation Centre, New Delhi, India. The journal is enjoying wide readership both at national and international level. The present Bibliometric study was carried on 366 scholarly research articles published in 'DESIDOC Journal of Library and Information Technology, during the period 2003-2012. Present analysis is mostly confined to examine article distribution pattern of the journal articles, authorship pattern, geographical distribution of authors and citation analysis. A maximum of 147 articles contributed in the journal are on two author pattern, followed by 139 articles as single author. New Delhi since being the host state of the journal emerged the single largest contributing state with 199 out of 627 contributors from India. On average 6.20 articles were published by the journal in each issue during the period of investigation with total references 5063, thereby making average 13.83 references each article. This paper discusses that cataloguing continues to be basic tool of knowledge organisation which has taken over even the function of classification bringing together similar ideas accessible on multiple points. It traces the history of cataloguing and individual contributions made by Panizzi, Lubetzky, Cutter, and Ranganathan who laid the foundation for modern cataloguing. It discusses the background of Resource Description and Access (RDA) code as development over AACR-2. The conceptual model of Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records (FRBR) along with its new terminology and basic principle of entity-relationship have been explained. While discussing new features of RDA, it has also been compared with AACR-2 to show the main difference between the two. It concludes that RDA is a descriptive catalogue code with metadata structure with added scope and advantages over AACR-2R but with mixed professional reaction on its adoption. G2C (Government to Citizen) information services under the e-Governance initiatives have become a major area of research across the world as the initiative is meant for enhancing the participation of the general public in governance. Giving focus on North East India, the present study has been carried out to analyse the usability of the services by the citizens. A pilot survey of 54 stakeholders (citizens) who have different backgrounds in Manipur was carried out. The findings of the survey bring to light, facts on the awareness and usability of G2C information service under the e-Governance initiatives in the state. The paper also aims to assess the usability of the services under the initiatives. The article focuses on the state of information science and scientometrics (ISS) analysis studies in India from 2005-2009. The author's study focused on analyzing bibliographic details of documents on ISS, which were obtained from the 2005-2009 issues of the journal "Indian Science Abstracts." He found that journals were the most important of publication in information science and scientometrics and that there was a strong trend of multi-authored papers during the given period. He also revealed that Karnataka was the source of majority of the papers on ISS with Tamil Nadu and Delhi trailing behind.

Purpose – The purpose of this article is to present the results of a research study conducted to assess the perceptions and opinions of 100 staff working in libraries on the impact of using IT on library housekeeping operations and information services, in eight central university libraries in India. Design/methodology/approach – Data gathering tools used include questionnaire, observation and informal interviews with selected library professionals. Findings – Iinformation technology had a tremendous impact on the efficiency of library operations and the delivery of information services. Use of IT has facilitated networking and resource sharing, eliminated duplication of effort, improved the speed of operations, increased access to information resources and improved the quality of information services. Originality/value – This is a pioneering study on the impact of using IT in the central university libraries in India. Ranganathan's relevance for today is enhanced by a consideration of the political contexts and contradictions in his work. Identification with the Indian independence movement was central to his library theory. Ranganathan's pioneering work of the 1930s challenged the ideological structures of colonial rule, advocating libraries and librarians as agents of a national political awakening, especially amongst the rural poor. In doing so, Ranganathan laid claim to be the heir of the Enlightenment 'universal library' and even suggests the possible role of libraries in creating 'organic' intellectuals amongst the poor. However, the potential to spread mass self-education across India was lost through Ranganathan's simultaneous reliance on the state to deliver social reforms from above. This contradictory approach caused theoretical problems for him following Indian independence. Ranganathan saw the new state as the embodiment of the people, and yet the government did not deliver the scale of library development that Ranganathan needed to fulfil his work. Ranganathan became politically disorientated and marginalized within India. Lacking an organic link to a mass social movement, his ideas became increasingly abstract and obscure. Periodical literature plays a critical role in communicating information to the fashion educators in India. This paper deals with the impact of the changing nature of information needs of fashion educators and their usage of fashion periodicals at the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) Delhi. The paper is in two parts. The first part discusses the transformation of fashion education in India and its impact on the periodical collection in the Resource Centre of NIFT. The second part reports the findings of a survey of preferences of periodicals by the fashion educators of NIFT Delhi. Design faculty used consumer and trade magazines. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe the implementation of a radio frequency identification (RFID) system in Pune University Library. Design/methodology/approach - The paper provides a brief overview of background of the project, barriers faced and changes that have been experienced after the implementation of the technology. Findings - At the initial stage the library is facing problems with regard to the lack of availability of technology experts in the library for the RFID system and also for the software. Later on the library applied some solutions and tried to minimise the problems and now it has proved to be a boon for the library. The article looks at the lack of library services for distance learners in India. It is suggested that a proactive role and re-engineering of library and information services are required but providers of the distance learning courses state that the learning materials supplied to students are exhaustive enough to allow them to complete their studies. The quality of the library and information science courses to students can only be assured by establishing student support services. The need for library and information services for distance students, the web-based library and information services including the library web site, and the online public access catalogue are discussed.

Information technology has brought a tremendous change in the nature, boundaries and structure of information. The ongoing movement towards an electronic information society is pushing libraries towards automation and digitization. The revolution has brought impressive changes in the role of LIS professionals who are now being viewed as information managers/facilitators. These developments have also influenced LIS writings and publishing. This study shows that while the application of IT has gained considerable importance in Indian libraries, IT-based papers have surprisingly found less space in Indian LIS periodicals as compared to the LIS literature in general. The findings of this study also indicate that there is an uneven distribution of various topics within the Indian LIS IT-published literature; while some topics/areas of IT have received considerable attention others have been barely touched. Topics like IT in general, bibliographic databases, library networking, library automation and electronic resources have been found to predominate in the growth of Indian LIS literature as compared to the coverage of other areas of IT. Most papers (60%) have single authors, indicating a low amount of teamwork/collaborative writing. The article focuses on the establishment of multimedia systems in the library and information science departments at the University of Delhi in Delhi, India. The purpose of this report is to examine and design a multimedia presentation to familiarize visiting university students and faculty. The traditional way of explaining to every student and faculty member information about the university was too time consuming and a multimedia system would lessen the burden on the university recruiting staff.

The paper presents a bibliometric study of library and information science research literature emanating from India based on the data abstracted in Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA). Standard bibliometric techniques are employed to analyse the collected data and accordingly get indicators. Bradford's law of scattering is used to identify core journals of library and information science wherein Indian authors publish their research output. To understand the productivity pattern of authors, Lotka's Law has been applied. The identified core journals are mostly published from India. Indian authors' contribution in international journals is very low. A list of authors who have published 10 and more papers during 1967-2004 is drawn and presented. There is very little guidance in library and information science (LIS) literature about how researchers should manage the scope, time, costs, quality, human resources, communications, and risks associated with LIS research projects. To fill this gap, researchers tested the utility of project management principles (PMP) for planning and managing a project designed to enhance the information, digital, and financial literacy of the people earning less than $2 per day in India. The customization of PMP through 29 mechanisms and 60 action items was used to conduct focus groups and in-person surveys with over 150 participants, in their native language, at 10 public libraries. PMP were most helpful for managing risks (13 solutions), communications (11 solutions), and human resources (10 solutions) of the project and treating participants ethically. PMP developed in the West were helpful before, during, and after data collection in the LIS research project in a developing country. • Most of the library and information science (LIS) literature does not report the "backend" of research projects. • The existing guidance for managing the backend of LIS research projects is not structured, comprehensive, or granular. • This study tested the utility of project management principles (PMP) for managing the backend of a LIS research project. • Customization of PMP was useful for managing the scope, time, costs, quality, human resources, communications and risks. • Findings inform LIS research practices and methods for managing backend challenges.
