During the 20th century, there has been an ongoing agricultural expansion and global warming, two of the main determinants influencing biodiversity changes in Argentina. The red hocicudo mouse (Oxymycterus rufus) inhabits subtropical grasslands and riparian habitats and has increased its abundance in recent years in central Argentina agroecosystems. This paper describes the long‐term temporal changes in O. rufus abundance in Exaltación de la Cruz department, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, in relation to weather fluctuations and landscape features, as well as analyzes the spatio‐temporal structure of captures of animals. We used generalized liner models, semivariograms, the Mantel test, and autocorrelation functions for the analysis of rodent data obtained from trappings conducted between 1984 and 2014. O. rufus showed an increase in abundance across the years of study, with its distribution depending on landscape features, such as habitat types and the distance to floodplains. Capture rates showed a spatio‐temporal aggregation, suggesting expansion from previously occupied sites. O. rufus was more abundant at lower minimum temperatures in summer, higher precipitation in spring and summer, and lower precipitations in winter. This paper focuses on how therapeutic culture is used to reshape the experiences of motherhood. Through childbirth supportive groups, raising children counselling and doulas' emotional support among other activities, women learn to build their experiences as mothers in terms of personal growth, self-development and spiritual healing. Here, I examine these notions and the creation of new normative ideals that link an experience of personal growth with the experience of motherhood. The article is part of an ongoing qualitative study on the experience of mothers who practice "attachment parenting" and "respectful parenting" in Buenos Aires. This style of parenting involves "full-term breastfeeding", co-sleeping, baby-led weaning, baby wearing, among the main practices. The paper analyses physical and verbal confrontations that unfolded in the Argentine Congress during the process of state formation, to understand the connections between those altercations and other dimensions of the political conflict of the time. In the mid-nineteenth century, Argentina was organised as a representative and federal republic. Congress became then the incarnation of the federation, the place where the representatives of all the districts met, and where congressmen regularly questioned Cabinet members. Focusing on those episodes, it examines how congressmen related to each other, the Executive, the public that followed the sessions in the Chamber, and the press. It takes into consideration drawings, pictures, photomechanical prints, lithographs, and cartoons of the Legislative and its members that provided a visual experience of Congress and affected its legitimacy. Considering the increase in housing tenants (inquilinización) and financialization in Latin America, this paper explores the emergence of short-term rentals in the City of Buenos Aires, as a growing trend of housing commodification, barely incorporated into the agenda of urban studies in Latin America. To do so, we take the case of Airbnb and examined four basic dimensions to characterize the phenomenon: quantity and evolution of offers, spatial distribution, housing prices and types of owners, then comparing them with the long term rental market. Results show that short term rental shows sustained growth both over time and territory; it is a real estate market segment which is operated by concentrated and intermediary actors. Due to the low occupancy rate of the properties, the rent obtained is currently lower than in the long-term rental market. However, the post-pandemic context (still in the process of recovery) and other significant non-economic factors must be considered when interpreting these results. This paper examines the palaeoenvironmental conditions of a Late Pleistocene marine unit assigned to the Puente de Pascua Formation (MIS 5e), Buenos Aires, Argentina. For this study, a micropalaeontological (Phylum Foraminifera) and lithological analysis was conducted, based on a PPas-section extracted in the Puente de Pascua site, located 32 km inland from the coastline of Bahía Samborombón (35°55′37” S; 57°43 ′7.6” W). The base of this section comprises finely stratified with brown clays, followed by a layer of dark brown sandy sediments with layers of shells, interspersed with light brown to yellowish deposits. Hyaline foraminifera of relative well preservation and small size prevail. The assemblage was represented mainly by Buccella peruviana and Ammonia parkinsoniana accompanied by other species such as Elphidium galvestonense, Ammonia tepida, Cribroelphidium poeyanum and Bolivina spp. in minor proportion. From this integrated study, palaeoenvironmental changes were established in Puente de Pascua Fm. (>66.5 kyrs). This paper illustrates the insights that can be gained from using a multidimensional poverty measurement method based on the capability approach to analyse the scale, characteristics, and spatial distribution of poverty in segregated cities. We assess the poverty gaps between formal and informal neighbourhoods and across districts, compare the results with income-based poverty estimates, and analyse the dimensional composition of poverty and disparities across population subgroups. The results show a weaker correlation between multidimensional and income-based measures and less overlap in terms of who is identified as poor in informal settlements than in the rest of the city. After adjusting for underrepresentation of the slum population in the household survey, informal settlements account for 10% of the city's population but nearly half of the multidimensionally poor. The purpose of this article is to describe and analyze the reconversion experiences of four social organizations to sustain the social bond and collective care in popular neighborhoods of the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA), Argentina, during the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on qualitative research work with an ethnographic approach, conducted remotely between July and September 2020, we i) reconstructed the social context and characterized the activities of the socio-community organizations studied in AMBA, before and during the pandemic; ii) sketched images such as the collective "la olla" organization, which describe the community provision of care; and iii) showed how, in the context of restricted movement, the organizations had to deploy tactics to "contain," "accompany" and take care of themselves and others. In line with debates about an economy of care, which produces values surreptitiously appropriated by the rest of the economy, this paper focuses on those resulting from socio-community practices related to: food --"la olla" and "la fila"--, health, and socio-affective --"containment"--. This proposal is intended to contribute to the theoretical-political field of discussion, in which it is situated, on the paradox between the centrality of (socio-community) care, for the production of social welfare, and its insufficient recognition in economic, social, and political terms. In this paper, we discuss the meanings assumed by citizen science for the regulation of therapeutic and medical uses of cannabis in Argentina, considering the mobilization of experiences in three municipalities of the province of Buenos Aires. Through conceptual tools of the STS field and techniques such as documentary analysis of resolutions and ordinances, participant observation, and in-depth interviews, we address the role of proximity experienced locally in the development of municipal regulation initiatives; the combination of different types of expertise (technical, scientific, medical, legal, experiential); and the processes of resignification and change of social identifications. The research shows that local regulations emerge from a heterogeneous social base that, in the form of citizen science, produces, uses, and transmits diverse expertise around the therapeutic uses of the plant and its derivatives. It also reveals that the construction processes of local government policies promote new social perceptions of certain groups (supportive growers, physicians, child users) that influence the way that therapeutic cannabis is settled as a public problem. Platform labour, especially when it comes to its flexible schedules, may represent a job insertion possibility and a source of income for many women. However, such opportunities are not exempted from gender bias. This article inspects how the expansion of the platform economy affects gender inequalities by focusing on two platform occupations: ride-hailing and delivery services. First, it investigates gender gaps in terms of working hours and earnings via linear regression as well as their determinants. Second, qualitative data further deepen the analysis of female riders' and drivers' experience in male-dominated territories, exploring how it is perceived and endured by workers. This paper is based on qualitative and quantitative data collected in the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires between 2019 and 2021. The analysis suggests that the gender-differentiated economic performance of riders and drivers is associated with demographic and on-the-job characteristics, implying restrictions for women workers in terms of how long, where, and when they can work. Algorithmic management further reinforces these initial female disadvantages, through tools such as scoring systems, dynamic pricing, and selective work allocation. This paper presents an analysis of food practice and representations of a particular migration process of rural families in South America that has moved, during the last 30 years, from Central Andean uplands to suburb lowlands in the Southern metropolitan area of Buenos Aires (Argentina). We implemented a mixed methods strategy, combining a qualitative methodology with an ethnographic perspective (including participation in local activities within both areas of interest), a quantitative approach (including database analysis with dish information), and social network analysis, which allowed us to formalize the links between ingredients, territories, local memories, and the importance of food sovereignty as well as collective identity in the context of migration. The results allowed us to identify: a) ingredient replacement in the original territory, due to the incorporation of food industry, modifying both the products consumed and the time dedicated to these activities; b) ingredient replacement in the destination territory, given the lack of access to most of the required elements to recreate family food; c) food alliances established between Jujuy migrant families and other Central Andean migrant populations; and d) the importance of a subset of ingredients and species that families try to hold in both territories. The bond between Borges and tango is very close. His vision about this music is related to the experiences he lived while tango started to spread and succeed in Argentina. This paper is a literature review of Borges' relationship with tango. The main purpose of this revision is to understand the collaboration between Borges and Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) in 1965. The last section of the paper is preceded by an analysis of Borges' tango mythical vision. The approach to this literature review is shaped by the bibliography that focuses on Borges and tango, as well as the works which study the relationship between Borges and Piazzolla. Borges' idea of tango is attached to the tradition which creates milonga as a rural music style. This music when it arrived in Buenos Aires was enriched with oral tradition and popular culture. This literature review reveals that Borges preferred the mythical vision of tango instead the innovation. The connection between tango and Borges presented here is the basis to reconsider the result of Borges and Piazzolla's collaboration. The goal of this paper was to analyze changes in the spatial pattern of metals in water and determining the factors that may be associated with that distribution using the asymmetric eigenvector maps and redundancy analyses in the Matanza Riachuelo river (MRR), Argentina. Data from 2008 and 2014 of metal concentrations (As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Ni, and Pb), water quality parameters and land cover variables from 38 samplings sites in the MRR were collected. The results obtained showed that the general spatial pattern of distribution of all the metals analyzed did not differ between both years and that the water flow was a factor that structured the distribution of metals in the river. The present study showed the utility of using these multivariate analyses to assess the dynamics of the spatial distribution of a group of metals in an urban basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to discuss the role and the impact of tourism in Argentina´s and thus Latin America´s coastal urban development processes. Hence, groups of cities with different tourism dynamics are identified on the coast of Buenos Aires according to their demographic and economic changes and continuities during the period 2001-2010. The results allow us to understand in a contextualized way the nature and tourist and urban functionality of the different cities on the coast of the province. Thus, six groups of cities have been identified according to the processes of change that tourism has caused in them and the diversity, complexity and dynamism that each type of cluster presents according to its particular characteristics has been evidenced. All this has allowed to visualize the diversity of destinations that exist in the littoral of the province according to its particular urban situation and its recent tourist evolution. Finally, empirical evidence is offered to support the conception that tourism not only has differential effects on urbanization processes, but that, depending on local circumstances, it generates specific dynamics that must be explained based on the knowledge of the economy and the identity of each place. This paper is part of a study intended to elucidate the current modalities of social intervention on children at risk in Argentina, as part of what is known as child protection and from a rights-based approach. I attempt to comprehend these modalities of intervention by focusing on the actions of the institutional agents of a state organism for the protection of children's rights in a mid-range area of Buenos Aires. The material presented here stems from an ethnographic and narrative approach to the actions carried out by these agents in relation to the families with which they interact, in order to access some of the significant schemes that frame them. I conducted my fieldwork in 2018, during a fivemonth internship in the organization, using participant observation as the main research technique. I argue that the trust that permeates the bond between state agents and the families targeted by the interventions is conceived as a moral value that conveys the instructive work carried out, fundamentally, on womenmothers. This characteristic does not serve to make relationships more flexible, but rather reestablishes itself to stylize control and surveillance mechanisms. At the same time, families make use of available institutional rhetoric as a way of translating their social experience into the language of rights, thus effecting the expected transformation. This work shows how current models of intervention involving children and their families incorporate new elements such as trust and affection, which, however, are woven with enduring power mechanisms typical of the scope of the state's protective services. It also discusses the place of families in the interaction with state agents to enable an understanding of their actions based on the use and appropriation of the language of rights. In this paper we present the archaeological training that archaeology undergraduate students of the University of Buenos Aires performed at a former illegal detention centre from the Argentinian dictatorship, the Espacio para la Memoria y la Promoción de los DDHH ex-Centro Clandestino de Detención Tortura y Exterminio 'Club Atlético' (Memorial Site for the Advancement of Human Rights, Former Illegal Detention, Torture and Extermination Centre 'Athletic Club') between 2016 and 2019. After contextualizing the development of archaeology teaching at the university level in Buenos Aires and the archaeological research at an illegal detention centre from the dictatorship, we present the results of this training to show how approaching archaeological topics in a way that is historically, politically, and physically closer to the students helped them to incorporate fieldwork and lab issues in a committed and meaningful way. This article explores the modalities of organization and the collective demands made in recent years by the indigenous population of the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires (Argentina). The Pehuen Co Paleoichnological site (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) contains one of the more diverse and well-preserved mammal and bird fossil footprint assemblages from the Late Pleistocene. The purposes of this paper were a detailed paleoenvironmental assessment of the footprint-bearing unit (middle member of the Agua Blanca Sequence) and to date key stratigraphic surfaces to constraint the temporal development of the site. A total of twenty-two detailed sedimentological sections were measured and correlated and five sediment and fossil remain samples were dated by the Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) methods, respectively. The lower part of the local sequence represents dense to dilute alluvial deposits that were pedogenized. The middle part contains an alternance of sandy sheet-flood and lacustrine mudflat deposits with sand patches of eolian origin. Most of the fossil footprints with better preservation quality were recorded in the mudflats of a shallow lake sourced by unconfined fluvial currents. The participation of eolian deposits increases up section. Locally, a sandy plain of fluvial origin is developed at the top of the section. The new OSL ages along with a previous radiocarbon date led us to propose that sedimentation of footprint-bearing levels would have extended approximately between 28.5 and 12.0 ka. Reworked marine shell remains from the lowermost levels of site with fossil footprints gave considerably older analytical ages in the range of 97.6–62.5 ka, which is probably the maximum age for the middle member of the Agua Blanca Sequence. The "marine levels of Pehuen Co", which are exposed at very low tides and contains in situ specimens of Ophiomorpha nodosa, are dated 7.0 ± 0.4 ka (OSL method). They reflect a Middle Holocene sea level rise in the area. • ESR and OSL dating methods allow to determine ages in the Pehuen Co Peloichnological site. • Sedimentological studies allow the reconstruction of late Pleistocene paleoenvironments. • The preservation of footprints is linked to grain size, the content of moisture and the presence of microbial mats. • Levels with Ophiomorpha nodosa , they reflect a Middle Holocene sea level rise in the area. In the year 1798 was found in England the first school in which mutual instruction was implemented. In Lancaster System, more advanced students (monitors) were supposed to transfer to their fellow students contents previously taught by their teacher. Thus, a single teacher could grant education to a big set of children. This method popularized and was applied in several countries all over the world, including Argentina, that had to deal with the lack of teachers. In this paper we shall analyze the case of José Catalá y Codina, a spanish scholastic who, while in charge of lancasterian schools in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, wrote two grammar handbooks: Compendio gramatical de la lengua nacional llamada castellana (1821) and Explicaciones sobre el compendio de gramática (1840). We will focus on those resources took by Codina from other works for him to make up his Compendio which, despite all its possible influences, is based primarily in Felipe Senillosa's Gramática española (1817). Besides emigration towards developed countries. Latin America has a regional migration dynamics of its own -- one in which the presence of women, as well as their employment in domestic service, has proved decisive. Combining a macro perspective with a case-based socio-anthropological approach, this paper examines international migration and domestic service at an intra-regional level. Drawing on statistical information, we first present an outline of the regional migration context and the insertion of migrant women as domestic workers in destination countries of the region. The core section of the article centers on the particular case of Argentina, and illuminates the experience of migrant domestic workers in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. Based on 30 months of collaborative fieldwork in a poor neighbourhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this paper scrutinises the multiple uses of violence among residents and the concatenations between private and public forms of physical aggression. Much of the violence reported here resembles that which has been dissected by students of street violence in the United States – that is, it is the product of interpersonal retaliation and remains encapsulated in dyadic exchanges. However, by casting a wider net to include other forms of aggression (not only criminal but also sexual, domestic and intimate) that take place inside and outside the home, and that intensely shape the course of poor people's daily lives, the paper argues that diverse forms of violence among the urban poor (a) serve more than just retaliatory purposes, and (b) link with one another beyond dyadic relationships. The paper explores the experience of travelling on Buenos Aires' Underground Railways (Subte) during the first decades of the twentieth-century. Reconstructing representations of passengers and their experiences through visual and textual sources, the paper shows how this underground mobility was a meaningful practice that expressed ambivalent sentiments towards progress and the rhythm of modern urban life. On the one hand, there was popular fascination with new technologies as well as a celebration and exaltation of this encapsulated mobility as a rational organisation of space in relation to time. This paper examines the women's association movement in Buenos Aires between 1920 and 1940, and its connection with the emergence of a social state. Subsidised by the state, associations led by upper-class women provided a significant number of social assistance services to mothers, working women and children, and had a notable impact on the design of social policy. While historiography concurs that by 1930 the significance of this charitably oriented women's movement had started to decline, being replaced by public welfare services, this paper seeks to question such a conclusion by analysing three of the most important women's social welfare associations in the period and showing how, having become the maternal face of the state, they retained a central role in the provision of social assistance until well into the 1930s, thus helping to prevent the state from becoming a ‘colossal bureaucratic machine’. This paper focuses on two Buenos Aires neighborhoods that face displacement pressures. Building on research about urban mobilization in a range of cities, this paper highlights how collaboration can vary in its configuration and orientation at the neighborhood level, despite similar circumstances. Data include ethnographic excerpts from the experiences of residents who fight to remain in their homes but ultimately leave, which trace out distinct neighborhood trajectories--moving onward and moving away. These accounts indicate divergence in how residents respond to displacement threats due to the differently situated, networked nature of the two sites as political spaces. This paper addresses the implications of the theoretical approach we choose to analyze the discourses of stakeholders in qualitative fieldwork. As part of this reflection I tackled the theoretical assumptions behind "action" versus "experience articulation" analytical traditions. The evidence presented was collected from 2004 to 2014 while accompanying the design, construction and management of a "social plant" for residues classification placed on "Reconquista Area", in northeast of Great Buenos Aires. Along this decade I combined traditional qualitative approach with action research, which permitted to register the changes and transformations in the discourses about the "social plant". My hypothesis is that these variations can be explained not only by context's fluctuations but transformations in social actor's subjectivities, which are reflected both in their positions among themselves and the narratives about their own stories. This paper presents some results of a qualitative study carried out in a secondary school in the city of Buenos Aires (Argentina). It examines how two students from poor families responded to, and viewed, aggression by peers at their school. This paper argues that the examination of students’ narratives about aggression (based on classism and sexism) illustrates the analytical usefulness of the moral dimension of social life to unpack crucial aspects of the micro politics of class and gender and processes of identity-making. Following Sayer, this article maps students’ responses to immoral sentiments and misrecognition: the search for respect and respectability, and moral boundary drawing. It demonstrates that these reactions are entangled in students’ class and gender identity-making. It also shows how ‘victims’ are able to regain respect. However, the individualized nature of these processes and the spirals of aggression they instigate demonstrate the fragile and temporary nature of this achievement. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The objective of this paper is to integrate mobility as across component of the management of specific public actions. The case of study concerns the public health services in Argentina, and mother's mobility conditions in the suburban of the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area. In terms of methodology, the paper working on the concept of access trying to identify, measure and evaluate the relationship between mobility conditions and maternal health care. Access is weighted according to the realization of health services, and not according to the arrival at the places where they are offers. The result is innovative empirical evidence, useful as an indicator to make more relevant the role of mobility within the public agenda of transport and others specific sectors, asa basic social right behind the access that requires coordinated actions and cross-sectoral approaches. The aim of this paper is to share some similarities about what children and young people obtain from work and school. The main protagonists in the research are children and young people who try to cope with two activities: school learning and work. The objective of this paper is two-fold: on the one hand, to make visible child and adolescent work in our region, since there is not a symbolic or social recognition of it, neither from the school sector nor from people in general and, on the other hand, to show that the school/work relation is a complex one: working children have to deal with different situations in order to keep up schooling: absences, late arrivals, tiredness, temporary desertion, promotion failure, lack of time to study and do homework. This paper contributes to the literature on the new politics of social inclusion and spatial justice in globalizing cities. My main argument is that accounts of such politics should focus on the multiple intervening social actors without neglecting or assuming the roles played by the urban middle classes. Focusing on the case of the City of Buenos Aires (CBA) after Argentina's neoliberal crisis of 2001, I show the importance of mobilized middle-class social actors in shaping institutional and territorial outcomes in a globalizing city that is highly polarized and fragmented. This study is based on participant observation, in-depth interviews, and archival research focused on (a) subscribers of state-sponsored citizen participation processes and (b) neighborhood activists with middle-class profiles-middle incomes, relative housing stability, and residency in neighborhoods with middle levels of development. Findings show that, although middle-class politics in the city evidenced a primary concern with place, neighborhood, and local territories, mobilized actors were also responding to deeper transformations brought about by processes of neoliberal globalization. Their repertoires of collective action also moved beyond the local scale and had significance for the wider governing of the city. Finally, it is shown that middle-class politics in the postcrisis CBA departed from the exclusionary attitudes evidenced in studies of other cities, which leads to the question of how such politics may be reconciled into broader coalitions seeking more egalitarian forms of urban globalization. This paper examines an example of a community currency system, the Argentine `barter clubs' developed from 1995. The term 'barter club' denotes a place of market exchange, within which economic transactions are paid for using an internal paper currency, the credito, issued by the founders of these clubs and not convertible to the official currency. The author's starting point is to wonder whether this micromonetary system could operate in an insular and independent manner, or if it was necessary to establish some kind of relation with the official macromonetary system. This was investigated by: an analysis of the discourses expressed by the key actors involved in `barter clubs'; a field survey conducted in a score of clubs in the province of Buenos Aires, and a case study of one of these; and comparing these results and conclusions with those of other researchers obtained at different times and in different places across the whole of Argentina. It was found that despite the barter club founders' desire to create an independent monetary system, the community currency owes its conditions of existence and acceptance to the official currency. The following paper proposal is to analyze, from a sociological perspective, the disruptive facts that occur in educational institutions, which include conflicts and violence of all kinds. In this sense, the problem is posed in a relational perspective in which conflictive facts in the classrooms must be analyzed according to the social changes happening nowadays. Thus, some aspects of globalization are relevant for this study, since we consider that it is a process that goes beyond economical and financial phenomenon and has many impacts on social and school life. Therefore, the article studies the impact of cohesion crisis, social inequality and intergenerational crisis in the bonds between students and teachers. In addition, the paper deals with the institutional deficits that put off school routine reorder. This paper was elaborated as a presentation of some of the conclusions of a research work I am doing on my PhD Thesis, called Integration and Conflict in High Schools from Buenos Aires City, which is a qualitative research composed by both ethnographical observation in high Schools and in interviews to main educational agents: teachers and deans. The paper argues that the global economy has produced changes in the hierarchical configuration of urban systems. The emerging organization tends to be more open and set up more horizontal relations among cities. There are some evidences that indicate the relative insertion of the main Latin-American cities in global networks. The paper shows the empirical evidence available to Latin-American cities and, specially, related to the Argentine case. It evaluates the tension between the historically forged trend toward geographic concentration of population and economic activities in the metropolis of Buenos Aires and other somewhat more recent trends towards dispersion, emphasizing the role of intermediate cities. The following is a sociological report on a particular segment of an opera audience. Its purpose is to explicate the processes of initiation in an activity typically considered “high culture.” It differs from other accounts of cultural consumption in that it is concerned not with the correspondence between social background and taste, but with the processes whereby taste is assembled. Drawing upon an 18-month-long ethnography on opera fans in Buenos Aires, this paper has two aims. First, it shows that passionate opera fans enjoy opera based on their belief that opera is something that needs to be learned in order to be properly enjoyed. Second, it describes three diverse instances in which people learn about opera. Furthermore, this paper also has a theoretical objective: to extend and refine the classic model of affiliation and initiation into cultural practices established by Howard Becker with his case study of marijuana use. This paper is framed in an UBACYT research project which we have developed in the "Teaching Practices" course of the Sociology Teacher Training Program of the UBA (University of Buenos Aires). We aimed at identifying the factors that can recurrently pose obstacles to this process, starting from the questioning and acknowledgement of Sociology categories, and, at the same time, analyze the teaching strategies that play as facilitators of this task, through the retrospective reconstruction of several teacher practices. This paper is an advance of the above mentioned project and presents provisional results of the second stage of this research, m which we have analyzed the obstacles in the construction of social thinking identified from the perceptions of our practicing students, and the didactic strategies that were implemented and facilitated the overcoming of these difficulties. This paper presents theoretical and methodological aspects of a current doctorate sub-project referred to the psycho-social processes involved in the construction of demands by youngster and adult education (EDJA in Spanish). It belongs to a framework project which analyzes factors and processes that takes into account the situation of the demand of EDJA in popular sectors of Buenos Aires City (Dir.: Sirvent) that has diagnosed a situation of deep educational poverty and the validity of the principle of accumulative advance in education. The paper presents some analysis categories integrative axis. It emphasizes in one of these axis, centered in the educational trajectory, starting from a life story taken as a case study that allows us to understand the development of the construction of demands processes in the dialectical interplay among the schooling, the EDJA and the social learning, considering the subject in their integrity and in their vital, family and socio-historical context. There are educational lacks which accumulate and feed each other, causing exclusions and configuring inhibiting psycho-social aspects. However, the dynamics of the stimulating learning are also observed. Drawing on ninety-three in-depth interviews conducted with informal workers in Buenos Aires in 2002, this paper examines how the everyday activity of informal work can be understood as a 'hidden' space of power and resistance in contemporary urban Argentina. Moving away from an economistic view of informal work, I argue that, while there is no single power relationship experienced by all informal workers, informal work more generally can be understood as a space in which multiple actors struggle over meaning and control through the deployment of diverse forms of power. The results presented here suggest that, while Argentines view informal work as a place of exploitation by employers and subjugation by the state, in some circumstances it can also be understood as a space of resistance, as workers attempt, through informal work, to create spaces hidden from control, to redefine the norms and rules which govern this space, and to transform the conditions of existence established by other actors. In focusing on the political function of informal work, this paper attempts to bring to light the complex relationships of power between the economy, the state, employers, and workers within the context of Argentina's economic and political crisis. The piquetero movement arose in Argentina in the 1990s as a response to high rates of unemployment, and a sizeable proportion of this movement -- including some of its most militant members -- are women. In a context where it is often assumed that women play less of a visible role in the public sphere than men, this paper explores what reasons can best explain women's high participation rates in the piquetero movement. This paper argues that women are involved in the movement in such large numbers for three main reasons. First, the movement is framed in a way that encourages the creation of a unitary, collective identity along traditionally gendered divisions of labour. Despite the problematic, gendered nature of these framing methods, they have nevertheless enabled women's easy involvement in movement. Second, participation in the movement allows women to meet practical gender interests, thus encouraging their participation. Finally, membership to the piquetero movement can address women's strategic gender interests. This paper is largely grounded in Molyneux's (1985) theory on strategic and practical gender interests, and the findings are partly based on field research, participant observation and personal discussions in Greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city of Argentina, is located on the southern shore of the Río de la Plata, hundreds of kilometers away from the seismically active areas in the west of the country. For this reason, and despite evidence from both historical and recent events, earthquake hazards in this area have been traditionally neglected. Based on a series of unprecedented ground motions recorded in the city, this paper presents a review of the seismic hazard in the city of Buenos Aires. In order to do so, a site-specific probabilistic seismic hazard assessment is conducted considering (i) the higher rate of moderate local intraplate earthquakes observed in this area compared to the rest of Argentina's stable region, (ii) the significant site amplification produced by the soil deposit, and (iii) the influence of long-distance earthquakes. The results suggest that site-specific seismic design criteria are needed in Buenos Aires. A series of uniform hazard spectra are recommended for such purpose. • Earthquake hazards should not be neglected in the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina. • Very long-distance earthquakes play an important role because of site amplification. • Site-specific ground motions prediction equations are needed. • Site-specific seismic design provisions should be considered. • A new Hymenolepis species is described parasitizing Sigmodontine rodents in Argentina. • An update of species in Hymenolepididae from rodents is provided. • Hymenolepis species from North-South American rodents are morphologically analyzed. • Phylogenetic inferences of Hymenolepididae from rodents are proposed. Rodents are hosts of a wide diversity of cestodes. Fifteen genera included in the family Hymenolepididae parasitize rodents, and only four of these genera have been recorded from the Neotropical region. The purpose of this paper is to update species of Hymenolepididae from rodents, describe a new species of Hymenolepis based on morphological and molecular characterization (ITS1 rDNA and cox1 mtDNA), comparing the features among the species from North and South American rodents, and provide phylogenetic inferences of Hymenolepididae from rodents based on sequences available in the GenBank. Rodents were collected in the Parque Provincial Ernesto Tornquist, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Hymenolepis ivanovae n. sp. differs from other Hymenolepis species registered from North and South American rodents by body size, scolex, suckers, cirrus sac, cirrus, testes, and eggs, among others. Comparative morphometric data for Hymenolepis species from North and South American rodents is provided. Molecular analyses place H. ivanovae n. sp. within the genus Hymenolepis with strong support, and show it close to species of zoonotic importance. During the last two decades, the metropolitan residential expansion in Argentina became the domain of gated communities. Peripheralization of the middle and upper-middle class population followed that of the poor and working class, establishing a scenario of uneven competition between both ends of the social spectrum for the available land in the metropolitan periphery and giving rise to new forms of urban segregation. Drawing on contemporary debates on socio-spatial segregation in Latin America and based on the cases of Nordelta and Las Tunas (municipality of Tigre, Buenos Aires Metropolitan Region), the paper explores the multiple articulations underlying how relations between neighbouring areas in these contradictory spaces are managed. In this paper I propose to address the treatment of international migration by the State. In order to do so, I analyze public policies which do not focus on the subject but which impact strongly on the foreign population. Thus, I seek to shed light on logics which may obviate and/or contradict the ones established in migration laws. Such logics become evident when research is conducted from the social and symbolic margins of the State, working with a broad conceptualization of public policies. I exemplify the contributions made by this perspective with the analysis of four policies implemented by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, Argentina, between 2004 and 2014 in the Parque Indoamericano Villa Soldati, area with one of the highest percentages of migrant population residing in this city. For over a decade, social and political scientists stress the centrality of citizen security policies within the political dynamics of the province of Buenos Aires. In general, the literature emphasizes that the Buenos Aires police is an organization with a high capacity to become autonomous and carry out security policies according to their interests, often illegal and repressive. However, recent research has emphasized the dependence of the police operation of political and social terms. In this context, the aim of the paper is to analyze which actors have the ability to influence the formulation of security policies and how. The central hypothesis of this work consider that governors are the actors with capacities and interests to pursue a policy of security of left or right according to their plan of campaign, which responds to other factors which are not the alleged police interests: mainly the ideology of the national executive and the location of the median voter. The corroboration of this hypothesis instructs on the strategic game behind securities policies and the relative autonomy of the police and the penal system in Argentina. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many of Buenos Aires City's inhabitants undergo serious housing difficulties. During the 21st century these difficulties have become more and more complex, to the point that the City's Legislature has systematically extended the state of housing emergency. In this context, the aim of this paper is to explain the deep causes and the social consequences involved in the housing issue, as it has a strong symbolic impact on the identities of those who undergo it. The theoretical frame for this work is Critical Discourse Analysis, its methodology is qualitative and the corpus consists of life histories and City's Government speeches on the so-called "housing issue". Gastropods and ostracods are widely used in Quaternary paleoenvironmental reconstructions but the taphonomic studies that should precede them are not as common. In this paper we compare the taphonomic information obtained from assemblages recovered in Holocene fluvial sequences of the Salado River basin (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and analyze the changes or similarities between species, localities and stratigraphic units. Using taphonomic grades, gastropod shells were cataloged based on three attributes: fragmentation, discoloration and dissolution. For ostracods, discoloration and dissolution together with the population structure (adults-juveniles A/J, valves-carapace V/C and male-female ratios) were analyzed. For gastropods, Heleobia parchappii , Biomphalaria peregrina and Succinea meridionalis showed similar preservation patterns, and Miradiscops brasiliensis showed least evidence of alteration. In ostracods, these patterns varied among species. For V/C ratio, 7% of assemblages were formed only by valves, 82% were dominated by valves and 11% were dominated by carapaces. Fragmentation and population structure allowed autochthonous and allochthonous associations to be distinguished. Gastropod assemblages with low levels of fragmentation were recovered mainly from the uppermost levels of the stratigraphic profiles. For ostracods, the A/J ratio showed that 52% of the assemblages were dominated by adults with most ontogenetic stages represented and 29% retained their original population structure suggesting they would be autochthonous associations, whereas 19% of the assemblages were dominated by juvenile valves therefore assuming allochthonous associations. Our results indicate that taphonomic analysis is an effective tool that allows identifying autochthonous assemblages, which are the most reliable for robust paleoenvironmental reconstructions. • First taphonomic study combinating ostracods and gastropods in Argentina. • The most abundant species of gastropod showed similar preservation pattern. • In ostracods, the preservation states varied among the most abundant species. • Ostracod population structure allows recognizing autochthonuos or allochtonous assemblages. This paper investigates a moment of shift in urban neoliberal governance strategies under the purview of a new municipal Chief of Government of Buenos Aires at the end of the 2000s: the introduction of a regime of public space that has had implications for the waste management sector (and particularly informal recyclers or cartoneros). I document government attempts to re-represent the city as a modern, hygienic centre that is receptive to investment and tourism, drawing on discursive framings of public space that seek to redefine legitimate users and uses of the city. Such framings are exclusionary of cartoneros and other marginalized urbanites. As with most forms of actually existing neoliberalism, this regime is contradictory and unstable, both containing and provoking challenges to its coherence. This case study of 'actually existing neoliberalism' in Buenos Aires encourages analytical focus on moments of shift and renewal in urban processes of neoliberalization. In this case the shift marked by the introduction of the regime of public space reveals the priorities and agendas of urban elites as championed by municipal governments, makes visible the paradoxes and contradictions inherent to neoliberal urbanisms, and also exposes openings for resistance, opposition, and renegotiation of urban neoliberal agendas (including protest, discursive reframings of the city and its uses, and the forging of indeterminate alliances).
