Abstract

In the year 1798 was found in England the first school in which mutual instruction was implemented. In Lancaster System, more advanced students (monitors) were supposed to transfer to their fellow students contents previously taught by their teacher. Thus, a single teacher could grant education to a big set of children. This method popularized and was applied in several countries all over the world, including Argentina, that had to deal with the lack of teachers. In this paper we shall analyze the case of José Catalá y Codina, a spanish scholastic who, while in charge of lancasterian schools in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, wrote two grammar handbooks: Compendio gramatical de la lengua nacional llamada castellana (1821) and Explicaciones sobre el compendio de gramática (1840). We will focus on those resources took by Codina from other works for him to make up his Compendio which, despite all its possible influences, is based primarily in Felipe Senillosa's Gramática española (1817).
