Il est axe sur l’utilisation des instruments en papier, c’est-a-dire tout document servant a faciliter les echanges et la delegation de droits, de propriete et de capital. De l’Egypte pharaonique a l’Afrique medievale occidentale, l’article met en lumiere l’utilisation des instruments papiers, et particulierement ceux usites dans les transactions financieres. Les juristes musulmans de l’epoque medievale decrivent et souvent debattent les parametres des contrats, y compris les agrements financiers. PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The treatment landscape for older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is evolving. Many treatments have comparable efficacy making their impact on quality of life (QoL) an important differentiating factor. In this review, we discuss QoL in older adults with AML, focusing on therapeutic and observational trials that have incorporated QoL assessments. FINDINGS: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a multi-dimensional concept incorporating physical, mental, emotional, and social functioning domains. HRQoL components overlap with components of geriatric assessment, a multidisciplinary diagnostic process that identifies underlying vulnerabilities of older adults and guides subsequent management strategies. HRQoL questionnaires may be general, cancer-specific, leukemia-specific, or symptom-focused. Therapeutic and observational cohort studies suggest HRQoL improves, or at least remains stable, during intensive and lower intensity therapies. Nonetheless, HRQoL is not routinely incorporated in AML therapeutic trials. SUMMARY: HRQoL assessments can inform both decision-making and management for older adults with AML.

The objective of this research is to analyze how YouTube has been studied in the field of Internet and politics. The focus is received on two axes: i) as specificities of temporal and regional distribution and ii) as objects of study and as theoretical approaches most used in 90 articles and articles located in the field and published in Brazil, between 2005 and 2019, indexed to Google Scholar. The methodology consists in the combination of Bibliometry and Content Analysis. The data pointed that the production on YouTube at I&P grew from 2011 and that the southeast, south and northeast regions are the production centers on the analyzed theme. Also, election campaigns are found as the main object. Finally, political strategy / identity and citizenship and sociability are the two most widely used theoretical approaches in the analyzed universe.

This deliverable (D4.7: Conference papers/posters participation) presents a detailed list of all conferences where the MedSTACH project was presented, during Phase I, in order to disseminate MedSTACH’s activities in the academic and industrial sectors. The list includes presentations in international and local conferences and workshops. The presentation of MedSTACH project and the Centre’s activities in the specific conferences served the networking with key and relevant associations, stakeholders, private agencies, archaeological missions, and universities at a local and international level.

Persaingan di industri yang semakin ketat, mendorong perusahaan untuk lebih mengembangkan dan mencari cara agar proses produksi dapat berjalan efisien dan efektif. Salah satu produk yang dihasilkan oleh perusahaan adalah writing dan printing paper recycle (WPR) yang berusaha menekan angka defect yang dirasakan masih tinggi. Six sigma sebagai salah satu tool dalam peningkatan kualitas dengan target 3,4 kegagalan per sejuta kesempatan untuk setiap transaksi setiap produk barang dan jasa dengan mengaplikasikan siklus define, measure, analysis, improve, dan control (DMAIC) yang bersifat teknik pengendalian dan peningkatan kualitas dalam bidang manajemen kualitas. Dengan menggunakan metode six sigma, kualitas WPR dan dihasilkan perusahaan cukup baik yaitu 3,19 sigma dengan tingkat defect 45.005 untuk sejuta produksi (DPMO). Implementasi peningkatan six sigma pada penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa terdapat 5 (lima) faktor yang menyebabkan defect yaitu dirtcount sebanyak 41.670 ton, gramature sebanyak 32.103 ton, caliper sebanyak 30.799 ton, brightness sebanyak 28.909 ton, coppsize sebanyak 26.911 ton. Diantara kelima jenis defect yang dihasilkan, faktor dirtcount adalah penyebab dominan. Dengan six sigma dapat diketahui juga bahwa indeks Cpm sebesar 2,6140 yang berarti bahwa perusahaan dianggap kompetitif dalam persaingan. &nbsp

Heart failure is a global public health challenge frequently presenting to the emergency department. After initial stabilization and management, one of the most important decisions is to determine which patients can be safely discharged and which require hospitalization. This is a complex decision that depends on numerous subjective factors, including both the severity of the patient's underlying condition and an estimate of the acuity of the presentation. An emergency department observation period may help select the correct option. Ideally, during an observation period, risk stratification should be carried out using parameters specifically designed for use in the emergency department. Unfortunately, there is little objective literature to guide this disposition decision. An objective and reliable definition of low-risk characteristics to identify early discharge candidates is needed. Benchmarking outcomes in patients discharged from the emergency department without hospitalization could aid this process. Biomarker determinations, although undoubtedly useful in establishing diagnosis and predicting longer-term prognosis, require prospective validation for emergency department disposition guidance. The challenge of identifying emergency department acute heart failure discharge candidates will only be overcome by future multidisciplinary research defining the current knowledge gaps and identifying potential solutions.

Four flame retardants and styrene-acrylic latex were used to make flame-retardant air filter paper via emulsion impregnation. The compositions and flame retardant mechanism of the flame retardants were investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The flame retardance of air filter paper was evaluated using TGA and limiting oxygen index (LOI) meter, and the physical properties and pore structure of the flame-retardant air filter paper were measured using stiffness tester, burst tester, and aperture analyzer. The results showed that the optimal ratio of flame retardant to styrene-acrylic latex was 1:1.4. The synergistic effect of boron, phosphorus and nitrogen made FR3 have good flame-retardant effect on air filter paper. Air filter paper with FR3 also had good physical strength and suitable pore size distribution.

EnglishThe use of varnishes as a final coat in graphic work fulfills an aesthetic and protective function. Over time, or due to adverse conditions, these varnishes undergo a series of degradations in their color that can distort the original appearance of the underlying work. Knowing the chromatic variations of these materials is essential for their selection as a conservation varnish. This work collects the results obtained from the colorimetric study carried out on a series of samples of paper with varnish exposing to different physical-chemical tests (humidity, immersion in water, dry heat and accelerated aging) tests that recreate adverse conditions to which this type of woks may be exposed as a consequence of its natural aging, the action of certain degradation factors or the restorative action. For this purpose, Somerset 100% cotton paper has been selected, which has been applied different varnishes of traditional use in graphic works: shellac, gum arabic, egg white, rosin and dammar. Here a novel paper-based electrochemiluminescence (ECL) device was developed for the detection of HL-60 cancer cells. In this approach, porous filter paper as a thin-layer electrochemical cell connected to a sheet of ITO working electrode. Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) and graphene were coated on the surface of ITO to immobilize capture HS-DNA. Then, the aptamer of HL-60 cancer cells, which is labeled with Ru(bpy)32+-conjugated silica nanoparticles (RuSi@Ru(bpy)32+) is hybridized with the capture DNA to form bioconjugates. In the presence of HL-60 cells, the aptamer would conjugate with glycoprotein at cell surface and RuSi@Ru(bpy)32+ NP-aptamer would be released. After the dissociation of RuSi@Ru(bpy)32+ NP-aptamer from the surface of ITO, ECL signal would decline. This simple, portable and disposable testing platform could detect HL-60 cancer cells down to 56 cells/mL. Introduction: The current study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Iranian scientific outputs on common cancers published in PubMed database during 2011-2015. Methods: In this applied, descriptive-analytical study, a scientometrics analysis was used. The study was conducted on all research papers which were written by Iranian scholars on stomach, colon, breast, prostate, and lung cancers and were indexed in PubMed database during 2011-2015. Data were extracted using Altmetrics Bookmarklet tool and analyzed by excel software. Results: According to the findings, the number of articles published by Iranian scholars on stomach, colon, breast, prostate, and lung cancers in 2011 was 25, 40, 88, 20 and 15, respectively. The number of articles on the same subjects in 2015 was 52, 93,256,44, and 32, in that order; however, a small percentage of the research papers were assigned a digital object identifier or had altmetrics scores. Mendeley had the highest proportion among other social networks to represent Iranian scholars’ outputs. Conclusion: Although the rate of scientific publications of Iranian scholars on common cancers has totally increased, they were heterogeneous in terms of quality and Altmetrics score. Therefore, it is recommended that the researchers select journals that assign a digital object identifier to their articles and publish their scientific papers in social media as well.

Forward is the direction to which research looks. But, scientists read prior literature for background and context, casting a retrospective glance to the past, albeit from a different vantage point. How do we evaluate the value of a scientific paper? Citations? Downloads? Or, more philosophically, the directions of inquiries it potentiated, and areas opened up? In retrospective analysis, counterfactual is the common tool in the social scientist’s armamentarium. Natural scientists, on the other hand, glean prospectively. Retrospective in analysis but yet prospective in outlook in what appears as a dichotomy. But, on closer examination, which is in harmony. From the contemporary vintage and using a prospective angle, this commentary casts light on a foundational paper that illuminated hitherto unknown functions of structural maintenance of chromosome (Smc) complex in mediating chromosome integrity and potentiating entry into subsequent phase of the DNA damage response.

This meta-analysis examines the inconsistent findings across experimental studies that compared children’s learning outcomes with digital and paper books. We quantitatively reviewed 39 studies reported in 30 articles (n = 1,812 children) and compared children’s story comprehension and vocabulary learning in relation to medium (reading on paper versus on-screen), design enhancements in digital books, the presence of a dictionary, and adult support for children aged between 1 and 8 years. The comparison of digital versus paper books that only differed by digitization showed lower comprehension scores for digital books. Adults’ mediation during print books’ reading was more effective than the enhancements in digital books read by children independently. However, with story-congruent enhancements, digital books outperformed paper books. An embedded dictionary had no or negative effect on children’s story comprehension but positively affected children’s vocabulary learning. Findings are discussed in relation to the cognitive load theory and practical design implications.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated reporting completeness and transparency in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) conducted using administrative data based on 2021 CONSORT Extension for Trials Conducted Using Cohorts and Routinely Collected Data (CONSORT-ROUTINE) criteria. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: MEDLINE and the Cochrane Methodology Register were searched (2011 and 2018). Eligible RCTs used administrative databases for identifying eligible participants or collecting outcomes. We evaluated reporting based on CONSORT-ROUTINE, which modified eight items from CONSORT 2010 and added five new items. RESULTS: Of 33 included trials (76% used administrative databases for outcomes, 3% for identifying participants, 21% both), most were conducted in the United States (55%), Canada (18%), or the United Kingdom (12%). Of eight items modified in the extension; six were adequately reported in a majority (>50%) of trials. Introduction: Increased life expectancy has risen in most parts of the world, indicating an improvement in public hygiene, diet and healthcare. Yet, the elderly remain a relatively frail population susceptible to a wide range of physical risks. The purpose of this review is to investigate the causes and risks of falls in the elderly. Method: A literature search was carried out using systematic reviews and research articles in the following databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL and MEDICAL-CHECK, as well as in individual Greek scientific journals. The search terms used were combinations of the following terms: ‘falls’, ‘elderly’, ‘nursing’, ‘falls prevention’, ‘falls assessment’, ‘falls risk’, as well as the corresponding terms in Greek, during the last twenty years. Results: The systematic search yielded 400 articles in English and 9 in Greek. Of these, 102 were included and the rest rejected because they did not meet the entry criteria. In particular, 60 articles were found in MEDLINE, 40 in CINAHL and 2 in Google scholar. Finally selected for critical discussion 20 articles.The findings were categorized in the following four major subgroups and elaborated accordingly: Exogenous factors, Endogenous factors, Financial burden of falls and Prevention and education. Discussion: As falls are a frequent and dangerous phenomenon for the elderly, healthcare professionals should be able to assess the capabilities of older people, especially in terms of balance and recommend suitable exercise programs. A simple exercise program should aim at the best possible outcome by involving a combination of activities, which include walking, cycling, aerobic drills and other resistance exercises. Such an exercise protocol can therefore be used to improve the static and dynamic balance of the elderly. Conclusions: In conclusion, as the number and percentage of elderly people continue to increase worldwide, new approaches to preventing falls are imperative. It is more difficult is to treat the consequences of falls than prevent them. Causes need to be identified and programs designed to promote health and prevention of falls which should be implemented through both hospital and community services in a seamless way.

PLA coating on Kraft paper is very promising systems for food packaging, and has potential environmental advantages over conventional synthetic paper coatings. This work was focused on: (i) analyzing the physicochemical, thermal and microstructural properties of PLA films; (ii) developing and studying multilayer systems obtained by impregnation of Kraft paper with different layers of PLA solution; (iii) evaluating the influence of PLA layers on the support cellulosic properties. The PLA coating improves packaging material performance and hence the functional properties of Kraft paper. The impregnation of hygroscopic materials as the Kraft paper with PLA was an alternative interesting to obtain more hydrophobic matrices. The assembled materials attained were heat-sealed. Furthermore, the use of PLA adds to potential food applications, a renewable resource value obtained from sources agricultural. The design of this multilayer support also allows its extension to other media such as paperboard. Moreover, the addition of 4 or 5 layers favourably modified the assembled system properties. Increasing even further the number of PLA layers, system properties hardly underwent a significant improvement. Niniejsze opracowanie stanowi próbę oceny 30 lat funkcjonowania włoskiego systemu finansowania Kościoła Katolickiego, z którego korzystają obecnie również inne związki wyznaniowe. Odwołując się do dostępnych danych Autor dochodzi do wniosku, że składające się na ten system rozwiązania – pomimo różnych szczegółowych zastrzeżeń – znacząco przyczyniły się nie tylko do stworzenia właściwych warunków realizacji wolności religijnej, ale i na przykład do demokratyzacji systemu podatkowego. Pozwoliły też Kościołowi na podjęcie wielu istotnych inicjatyw społecznych, opiekuńczych i kulturalnych z korzyścią dla włoskiego społeczeństwa i ludności państw Trzeciego Świata. Doświadczenia te bez wątpienia mogą być postrzegane w kategoriach zdrowej współpracy (sana cooperatio), której tak bardzo życzył sobie Sobór Watykański II i do której Republika Włoska oraz Stolica Apostolska wzajemnie się zobowiązały w Umowie z 1984 r. Omawiany system finansowania wymaga jednak stałej promocji, która powinna uwzględniać przede wszystkim odwołania do Kościoła jako wspólnoty, której wszyscy członkowie – równi w godności – dzielą odpowiedzialność za dobro wspólne. The main goal of the present paper is to assess the 30 years of the functioning of the Italian system of financing the Catholic Church, also utilized at present by other religious organizations. On the basis of the available data, the Author reaches the conclusion that the solutions making up the system – despite some reservations – have contributed significantly not only to the creation of the appropriate conditions for the realization of religious freedom, but also – for example – to the democratization of the tax system. They have allowed the Church to undertake many important initiatives of social, protective or cultural character for the benefit of Italian society and the populations of the Third World. Without doubt, the experiences described can be regarded in terms of sound cooperation (sana cooperatio), which was recommended by the Second Vatican Council and to which both, the Italian Republic and the Holy See, commited themselves in the Agreement of 1984. However, the analysed system of financing requires permanent promotion, taking into consideration the image of the Church as a community whose members – equal in dignity – share the responsability for the common good.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic brought numerous challenges, and novel methods for monitoring symptoms and quality of life of people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are now required. The COPD Assessment Test (CAT), the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness-Fatigue-Subscale (FACIT-FS) and the St. George’s Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) paper-based measures are commonly applied in clinical practice. Nevertheless, it is unknown if follow-up monitoring using telephone interview is equivalent to in person paper-based forms. Objectives: This study aimed to compare validity and reliability of follow-up monitoring using CAT, FACIT-FS and SGRQ when administered by paper-based forms and telephone interview in people with COPD. Methods: Data from an observational 6-month prospective study including people with stable COPD followed up monthly was analysed. At follow-up six, participants answered to CAT, FACIT-FS and SGRQ questionnaires in person during a home visit and by telephone with an interval maximum of 48-hours. Participants were randomly selected to answer first to the paper version followed by telephone or vice versa. Validity was assessed with the Spearman correlation (rs). Reliability measures included Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), standard error of measurement (SEM), Bland and Altman 95% Limits of Agreement (BA95%LoA) and internal consistency with Cronbach’s alpha. Results: Twenty-one people with COPD (17 men; 65 ± 8 years; FEV1 65.1 ± 21.2%predicted) were included. Strong positive correlations (rs 0.85-0.98, p < 0.001) between the scores of CAT, FACIT-FS and SGRQ applied by both methods were found. Test-retest reliability was excellent, with an ICC of 0.94 (95%CI: 0.85-0.98), 0.99 (95%CI: 0.96-0.99) and 0.98 (95%CI: 0.94-0.99) for CAT, FACIT-FS and SGRQ total scores. The SEM showed a low level of associated measurement error, ranging between 0.40 in FACIT-FS to 4.68 in SGRQ symptoms subscale. The BA95%LoA ranged from -1.13 to 0.80, illustrating a good level of agreement between both administration modes, with no evidence of bias. The internal consistency was similar between paper and telephone versions (Cronbach’s alpha of 0.72/0.71, 0.34/0.21 and 0.85/0.86 for CAT, FACIT and SGRQ total scores). Conclusions: In a context where personal contact should be reduced, telephonic administration of CAT, FACIT-FS and SGRQ showed to be a valid and reliable alternative approach to paper-based forms for monitoring symptoms and health-related quality of life in people with COPD. published

Un elevado porcentaje de las personas que han padecido COVID refieren, tras la recuperación de la fase aguda de la enfermedad, una serie de manifestaciones clínicas tanto subjetivas como objetivas que se prolongan más allá de 3 semanas e incluso de 3 meses del cuadro clínico original. No existe todavía una nomenclatura consensuada para referirse a este cuadro, pero quizá la más usada es la de síndrome post-COVID. El Comité Científico sobre COVID del Colegio de Médicos de Madrid ha discutido este problema con una aproximación multidisciplinar en la que han participado, internistas, infectólogos, psiquiatras, neumólogos, cirujanos, geriatras, pediatras, microbiólogos, médicos de familia y otros especialistas, tratando de acopiar la información existente y discutiéndola en el grupo. Las manifestaciones clínicas son muy variables y oscilan entre cuadros de simple cansancio y persistencia de lesiones pulmonares fibrosantes con alteraciones objetivas de la función pulmonar. El síndrome post-COVID parece particularmente frecuente y grave en aquellos adultos que han precisado ingreso en Unidades de Cuidados Intensivos y tiene un comportamiento peculiar en un grupo muy reducido de niños. El síndrome post-COVID, de existencia indudable, no es, a primera vista, claramente diferenciable del que se produce tras otras enfermedades víricas agudas y tras estancias prolongadas en UCI por enfermedades de otra naturaleza. Por tanto, ofrece oportunidades excelentes de investigación para clarificar su patogenia y posiblemente la de otras entidades afines. Es posible que progresivamente se produzca una demanda asistencial incrementada entre los millones de personas que han sufrido y superado el COVID agudo para la cuál las autoridades sanitarias debieran diseñar mecanismos de gestión ágil de una asistencia que posiblemente requerirá de grupos multidisciplinares bien coordinados. Este documento, estructurado en preguntas sobre distintos aspectos del síndrome post-COVID, intenta poner en escena el estado actual de este problema. A high proportion of people who have suffered from COVID-19 report, after recovery from the acute phase of the disease, clinical manifestations, both subjective and objective, that continue beyond 3 weeks or even 3 months after the original clinical disease. There is still no agreed nomenclature to refer to this condition, but perhaps the most commonly used is post-COVID syndrome. The Scientific Committee on COVID of the Madrid College of Physicians (ICOMEM) has discussed this problem with a multidisciplinary approach in which internists, infectious disease specialists, psychiatrists, pneumologists, surgeons, geriatricians, pediatricians, microbiologists, family physicians and other specialists have participated, trying to gather the existing information and discussing it in the group. The clinical manifestations are very variable and range from simple fatigue to persistent fibrosing lung lesions with objective alterations of pulmonary function. Post-COVID syndrome seems to be particularly frequent and severe in adults who have required admission to Intensive Care Units and has a peculiar behavior in a very small group of children. The post-COVID syndrome, which undoubtedly exists, is at first sight not clearly distinguishable from clinical manifestations that which occur after other acute viral diseases and after prolonged stays in ICUs due to other diseases. Therefore, it offers excellent research opportunities to clarify its pathogenesis and possibly that of other related entities. It is possible that progressively there will be an increased demand for care among the millions of people who have suffered and overcome acute COVID for which the health authorities should design mechanisms for the agile management of care that will possibly require well-coordinated multidisciplinary groups. The application of single-cell mRNA sequencing technologies to plant embryos promises to reveal the gene expression dynamics underlying cell-type differentiation. A new paper in Development reports the generation of high-quality transcriptomes from single embryonic nuclei without contamination from maternal tissues. To find out more about the story, we caught up with first author Ping Kao and his supervisor Michael Nodine, who recently moved from the Gregor Mendel Institute in Vienna to become Assistant Professor in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.

o El propósito de este estudio es describir el estado actual de la publicación de investigaciones y las tendencias en el aprendizaje invertido, que se encuentran en "Web of Science" durante el período 2014-2018. Hay 262 artículos investigados, publicados e indexados en "Web of Science" con la palabra clave: "aprendizaje invertido" y "aula invertida". Los resultados del estudio se analizan según la revista de publicación según estos criterios: autor, países, agencias de financiación, tipos de documentos, idiomas, organización, años de publicación y título de la fuente. El aprendizaje invertido cambia la clase tradicional dando la vuelta al aula en el sentido de escuchar las videoconferencias en casa y realizar actividades dinámicas en grupo en el aula. Esto involucra a los estudiantes en el aprendizaje activo, el pensamiento crítico y mejora las habilidades interpersonales.Se recomienda a los autores explorar la posibilidad de utilizar este método, experimentar y publicar los hallazgos que permitan crear mejores prácticas y un marco unificado para instructores líderes que deseen adoptar esta metodología de enseñanza. Palabras clave: aprendizaje invertido, aula invertida, análisis de contenido, The purpose of this study is to describe the current state of research publication and trends in flipped learning, found on ‘Web of Science’ during the period 2014–2018. There are 262 papers investigated, published and indexed on ‘Web of Science’ with the keyword: “flipped learning” and “flipped classroom”. The results of the study are analysed according to the journal of publication by these criteria: author, countries, funding agencies, document types, languages, organisation, publication years and source title. Flipped learning changes the traditional lecturing by flipping the classroom in the sense of listening to the video lectures at home and doing dynamic, group-based activities in the classroom. This engages the students in active learning, critical thinking, and meliorates interpersonal skills.It is recommended to authors to explore the possibility of utilising this method, experimenting and publish the findings which allows to create best practices and a unified framework for leading instructors who want to adopt this teaching methodology. Türk dünyası edebiyat birikiminin Kazak coğrafyasında şiirleriyle dikkati çeken Şakerim Kudayberdiulı ideal sahibi, düşünen bir şairdir. O şiirlerinde sadece mensubu olduğu millete değil tüm insanlığa faydalı olabilecek şeyleri bizzat kavramaya, kavrayabildiklerini de birinci elden okuru ile paylaşmaya çabalar. Onun şiirlerinde düşünme fiili çoğu zaman oluş hâlinde verilir. Yine bu şiirlerde bireyin ihtiyaç ve menfaatlerine karşılık gelen, geçici ve derinliksiz; toplumun faydasına hizmet eden, ahlak hâlini almış, derinlikli olmak üzere iki farklı düşünme fiiline dikkat çekilir. Şair okuyucularını, bu iki düşünme biçimi arasında ideal olduğuna inandığı şekilde bir düşünme yeteneği kazandırmak için uğraşır. Kazak coğrafyasında eğitim, millî birlik ve doğru din anlayışı konusunda yaşanan sıkıntılar sebebiyle ideal düşünme biçiminden uzaklaşıldığını düşünen Kudayberdiulı, geleceği kurtarmak için bu düşünce şeklinin yeniden kazanılması gerektiğine inanır. Çünkü ona göre adalet, doğruluk, özgürlük ve hak kavramlarının hem teorik hem de pratik olarak bireyin ve toplumun hayatında yerleşik hâle gelebilmesi bu düşünce biçiminin kazanılmasıyla mümkün olacaktır.

The recent article by Rigby and Jones in Scientometrics (15-May-2020) again draws attention to basing PhD-theses on published works, in their case introducing the system into the Social Sciences and Humanities. In this short communication we endeavour to provide additional information that is essential for this debate.

Background The Schedule for the Evaluation of Individual Quality of Life-Direct Weighting (SEIQoL-DW) is a prevalent face-to-face interview method for measuring quality of life by integrating respondent-generated dimensions. To apply this method in clinical trials, a paper-administered alternative would be of interest. Therefore, our study aimed to analyze the agreement between the SEIQoL-DW and a paper questionnaire version (SEIQoL-PF/G). Methods In a crossover design, both measures were completed in a random sequence. 104 patients at a heart surgery hospital in Germany were randomly assigned to receive either the SEIQoL-DW or the SEIQoL-PF/G as the first measurement in the sequence. Patients were approached on their earliest stable day after surgery. The average time between both measurements was 1 day (mean 1.3; SD 0.8). Agreement regarding the indices, ratings, and weightings of nominated life areas (cues) was explored using Bland-Altman plots with 95% limits of agreement (LoA). Agreement of the SEIQoL indices was defined as acceptable if the LoA did not exceed a threshold of 10 scale points. Data from n = 99 patients were included in the agreement analysis. Results Both measures led to similarly nominated cues. The most frequently nominated cues were “physical health” and “family”. In the Bland-Altman plot, the indices showed a mean of differences of 2 points (95% CI, − 1 to 6). The upper LoA showed a difference of 36 points (95% CI, 30 to 42), and the lower LoA showed a difference of − 31 points (95% CI, − 37 to − 26). Thus, the LoAs and confidence intervals exceeded the predefined threshold. The Bland-Altman plots for the cue levels and cue weights showed similar results. The SEIQoL-PF/G version showed a tendency for equal weighting of cues, while the weighting procedure of the SEIQoL-DW led to greater variability. Conclusions For cardiac surgery patients, use of the current version of the SEIQoL-PF/G as a substitute for the SEIQoL-DW is not recommended. The current questionnaire weighting method seems to be unable to distinguish weighting for different cues. Therefore, the further design of a weighting method without interviewer support as a paper-administered measure of individual quality of life is desirable.

Background The ProFibro application (app) was developed as a Mobile Health resource to promote self-care in fibromyalgia management. Objective This study aimed to assess the effects of the use of the ProFibro app for six weeks compared to the use of a traditional paper book of similar content to improve health-related quality of life, symptoms, and self-care agency in individuals with fibromyalgia. Methods Forty individuals with fibromyalgia were included in this randomized, single-blind, parallel trial. One group received intervention content using the ProFibro app on a smartphone while the other received similar information using a paper book. Participants were assessed at baseline and after six weeks. The primary outcome was the Revised Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire. Secondary outcomes were Widespread Pain Index, Pain Visual Analog Scale, Symptom Severity Scale, and Appraisal of Self-Care Agency Scale – Revised. Results No differences in changes were found between groups at the end of the treatment for any outcome. Both groups showed improvements in symptom severity. Conclusions The use of the ProFibro app for six weeks was not more effective than the use of a traditional paper book with similar content for health-related quality of life, symptoms, or self-care agency in individuals with fibromyalgia. Both groups showed improvements from baseline on severity of symptoms, suggesting that the self-care program using a mobile app or a paper book may be beneficial for individuals with fibromyalgia.
