Delay tolerant networks (DTNs) is a network evolved from mobile networks. Differing from the traditional network, which has a stable end‐to‐end transmission path, DTNs are sparse and intermittently connected mobile ad hoc network, which are widely used in harsh environments, such as battlefields, seabed, space communication networks, and so on. In DTNs, intermittent connectivity, partitioned network, long delays and node mobility characteristics make the network fail to communicate frequently, therefore, how to successfully forward the message is of extreme importance. Up to now, almost all the traditional models in DTNs use the store‐carry‐forward method. This paper proposes a novel clustered DTN routing model based on sensing node relationship strength. The routing mechanism takes advantage of the number of other nodes encountered by the nodes in the process of movement and the changes in the number of nodes to calculate the strength of the relationship between nodes, and clusters DTN routing according to the strength of the relationship between nodes. Moreover, the relationship between nodes in a cluster and other clusters is used to transmit messages between clusters, and messages are transmitted within clusters according to the strength of the relationship between nodes. Simulation results show that the routing mechanism not only increases the success rate of message transmission, but also reduces the transmission delay of messages and improves network performance. In unmanned aerial vehicle ad‐hoc network (UANET), the node speed of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) may reach up to 400 km/h. The fast or slow movement of UAV nodes leads to different speeds of topology change of the nodes. Traditional optimized link state routing (OLSR) protocol cannot adaptively adjust the routing update period when the network topology changes, which may lead to the nodes calculating incorrect routing tables. This increases the average end‐to‐end delay and packet loss rate for packet transmission. To enhance the adaptability of OLSR routing protocol to network topology changes, this paper proposes a multi‐agent independent deep deterministic policy gradient‐OLSR (MA‐IDDPG‐OLSR) routing protocol based on distributed multi‐agent reinforcement learning. The protocol deploys DDPG algorithm on each UAV node, and each UAV node adaptively adjusts the Hello and TC message sending intervals, according to the one‐hop neighbouring nodes as well as its own state. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol is able to improve the throughput and reduce the packet loss rate as compared to traditional AODV, GRP, OLSR, and distributed multiple‐agent independent proximal policy optimization‐OLSR (MA‐IPPO‐OLSR), distributed multiple‐agent independent twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient‐OLSR (MA‐ITD3‐OLSR) routing protocols. Since MA‐IDDPG‐OLSR relies only on local information, there is a minor performance degradation in MA‐IDDPG‐OLSR compared to centralized single‐agent DQN‐OLSR routing protocol. Processing queries in wireless sensor networks causes quality of service challenges such as data latency and validity. In fact, this paper is going to shed light on identifying the right trade‐off between latency and the freshness of the data. For this purpose, a fuzzy logic‐based decision‐making system that assigns incoming queries either to the sensor network, where the queries are waiting to be processed into a queue, or a central database which provides stored and potentially stale data or to a cache server which in turn provides acceptable latency and recent data, is provided. Thus, a new rule‐based system decision is introduced, that minimizes the request latency and returns the most recent data. In addition, a comparison between the approach and other work that is restricted to the database server and sensor network with no focus on the caching server is provided. Ad hoc networks are a new perspective of wireless communication for versatile hosts. Security is a colossal worry for ad hoc networks, especially for those security-touchy applications. The huge highlights of ad hoc networks cause both difficulties and openings in accomplishing security objectives. One such aim is to consider the assaults from within the system by compromised nodes correspondingly as to consider harmful assaults propelled from outside the system. Designing an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that suits the security needs and characteristics of ad hoc networks for viable and proficient performance against intrusions is one potential solution to vanquish vulnerabilities. This paper examines a genuine and hurtful attack called, "Malicious Packet Dropping Attack" in the network layer. To secure against this attack, a novel methodology utilizing game theory is proposed. The proposed system monitors the conduct of the neighbor nodes and conquers the demerits such as false positives present in traditional IDS, thereby providing secure correspondence between nodes that communicate with one another to course the traffic from source to destination. Ultraviolet technology has a wide range of applications in military and civilian fields, such as space detection, ultraviolet light guidance, ultraviolet interference, corona discharge detection and military communications. Starting from the single and multiple scattering of ultraviolet light, this paper first introduces the progress of ultraviolet optical communication at home and abroad. Then it analyzes the different links in ultraviolet optical communication. Next, it discusses the pulse broadening effect and atmospheric turbulence of ultraviolet communication in non-direct link ultraviolet communication. This paper proposes a novel scalable reinforcement learning approach for simultaneous routing and spectrum access in wireless ad-hoc networks. In most previous works on reinforcement learning for network optimization, the network topology is assumed to be fixed, and a different agent is trained for each transmission node—this limits scalability and generalizability. Further, routing and spectrum access are typically treated as separate tasks. Moreover, the optimization objective is usually a cumulative metric along the route, e.g., number of hops or delay. In this paper, we account for the physical-layer signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a wireless network and further show that bottleneck objective such as the minimum SINR along the route can also be optimized effectively using reinforcement learning. Specifically, we propose a scalable approach in which a single agent is associated with each flow and makes routing and spectrum access decisions as it moves along the frontier nodes. The agent is trained according to the physical-layer characteristics of the environment using a novel rewarding scheme based on the Monte Carlo estimation of the future bottleneck SINR. It learns to avoid interference by intelligently making joint routing and spectrum allocation decisions based on the geographical location information of the neighbouring nodes. Vehicular ad hoc networks consist of self-organizing nodes using multi-hop wireless links for communication without any infrastructure support. Traditionally, ad hoc routing protocols use the minimum hop count for their routing metric since a smaller number of transmissions is typically equivalent to a higher throughput, lower delay, and minimal power consumption. However, with the muti-rate capability of emerging radio interfaces, e.g., 802.11ax/be standards, the min-hop metric no longer results in high throughput. For instance, if the higher data rate links are selected for the route, it could result in a higher throughput even if the route takes more hop counts. In this paper, we propose a high throughput routing scheme, called MARV, which makes two key contributions. MARV searches for high throughput paths using an on-demand route searching algorithm so that the routing overhead is smaller compared to other multi-rate-aware routing schemes. MARV also searches for multiple paths to maintain both min-hop and high-throughput paths to select the adequate path depending on the data packet size. The performance of throughput, delay, and their tradeoff in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) has been investigated on different assumptions. Nevertheless, few papers consider the supportive infrastructure in MANETs. With the help of supportive infrastructure, i.e., cellular networks, the performance of throughput and delay in MANETs can be improved. The impact of supportive infrastructure on the throughput–delay tradeoff in MANETs is an open research point. In this paper, we are interested in the optimal throughput–delay tradeoff in MANETs with supportive infrastructure. We investigate the supportive infrastructure that only provides transmission pipes between distant nodes. We study the optimal throughput–delay tradeoff in MANETs on different assumptions such as different densities of nodes and base stations (BSs), discrete/continuous mobility models with various velocities, and the fast/slow mobility assumption. We obtain the asymptotically optimal throughput–delay tradeoff and propose transmission policies based on random linear coding (RLC) to achieve the optimal throughput–delay tradeoff asymptotically. From the obtained optimal throughput–delay tradeoff, we find that supportive infrastructure reduces the delay bound from velocity, which is a lower bound of delay caused by nodes' velocity. In particular, if supportive infrastructure can cover the entire network, then the delay bound from velocity vanishes when per-node throughput does not exceed a threshold. Moreover, we find that there also exists a delay bound from the transmission range of the instant transmission. In addition, we observe that, for the optimal throughput–delay tradeoff in the large throughput region, the case in the continuous mobility model outperforms the case in the discrete mobility model, and the case on the slow mobility assumption outperforms the case on the fast mobility assumption. Electromagnetic spectrum resources are a very important resource. With the rapid development of radio technology, electromagnetic spectrum resources have become scarce. Abuse of spectrum resources and interference with primary user often occur. Pre-sensing the electromagnetic environment and performing dynamic spectrum access is the direction of future wireless technology development. This paper focuses on the electromagnetic spectrum information service platform. We design a spectrum detection node in combination with an embedded system. The distributed spectrum detection network is constructed by using the TV White Space as the communication frequency band of the backbone network. From the perspective of signal source, research on detection and identification methods based on radio signal characteristics improves the efficiency of electromagnetic spectrum detection. A phase extreme range estimation method based on radio frequency I/Q data is proposed to improve signal estimation accuracy in a low signal-noise-ratio environment. The interquartile range is proposed to distinguish noise and signal. The experiment results show that distributed electromagnetic spectrum information service platform based on signal characteristics can improve detection accuracy and increase system flexibility. In the last years, vehicular networking has grown up in terms of interest and transmission capability, due to the possibility of exploiting the distributed communication paradigm in a mobile scenario, where moving nodes are represented by vehicles. The different existing standards for vehicular ad-hoc networks, such as dedicate short range communication (DSRC), wireless access for vehicular environment (WAVE)/IEEE802.11p, have given to the research community the possibility of developing new medium access control (MAC) and routing schemes, in order to enhance the quality and the comfort of mobile users who are driving their vehicles. In this paper, we focus our attention on the optimization of traffic flowing in a vehicular environment with vehicle-2-roadside capability. As shown later, the proposed idea exploits the information that is gathered by road-side units to redirect traffic flows (in terms of vehicles) to less congested roads, with an overall system optimization, also in terms of carbon dioxide emissions reduction. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) experience large-scale high-speed mobility and volatile topology. VANETs may therefore experience intermittent connections and may occasionally be unable to guarantee end-to-end connections. This gives the medium access control (MAC) layer the opportunity to adapt its transmission strategy to the current unstable wireless connections to improve transmission efficiency. In this paper, we propose an adaptive frame length aggregation scheme (AFLAS) for VANETs, which is designed to improve transmission efficiency and increase data throughput. In our scheme, the incoming data packets from higher layers are queued separately in the MAC layer to wait for transmission opportunities. Suitable aggregation frame lengths are calculated according to the current wireless status and applied in the MAC layer at the onset of data transmissions. In this paper, we analyze and apply our AFLAS strategy to two current frame aggregation schemes in IEEE 802.11. We also report on the performance evaluation of our scheme. Our results exhibit significant improvement results in data throughput, retransmissions, overheads, and transmission efficiency in comparison with nonadaptive aggregation schemes. The increasing demand for Internet of Things (IoT) applications has resulted in vast amounts of data, requiring the utilization of big data analytics. The integration of big data analytics in IoT-based smart cities can greatly benefit from the development of wireless communication protocols, among which the Thread protocol has emerged as a promising option. Thread is IEEE 802.15.4 based and has advanced capabilities like mesh networking, IPv6 support, and multiple gateways providing no single point of failure. This paper presents the design and evaluation of a low-cost mesh network using Raspberry Pi, nRF52840 dongle, and OpenThread 1.2 (i.e., an open-source software implementation of the Thread protocol stack). The research elaborates on the hardware and software solutions used, as well as the network topologies adopted. To evaluate the performance of the developed system, extensive real-time tests are performed, considering parameters, such as jitter, packet loss, and round trip time. These tests effectively demonstrate the effectiveness of the Thread network. Furthermore, the impact of varying payload size and bitrate on the network is analyzed to understand its influence. The behavior of the multi-hop network is also examined under link failure scenarios, providing insights into the network's robustness. Our findings provide valuable insights for researchers interested in designing low-cost and efficient mesh networks for various IoT applications, including home automation, building/campus monitoring systems, distributed industrial IoT applications, and smart city infrastructure. In an infrastructure-based wireless network, including mobile users and vehicles, many crucial and important services are provisioned by a centralized server. However, due to damaged infrastructure and increased mobility caused by an emergency, maintaining continuous service coverage in such a network can be challenging. Although several prediction-based replication methods have been proposed to achieve service coverage through replication of the central server, they are unable to accurately predict future topological changes and thus maintain service coverage in a post-emergency network. These topological changes are, in fact, directly related to user mobility. Nevertheless, existing mobility models are unable to realistically represent post-emergency user movements. Consequently, at first, this paper proposes a realistic mobility model that includes users' post-emergency complex behavioral changes. Subsequently, this paper proposes a machine-to-machine (M2M) networking-based service coverage framework for post-emergency environments. The proposed framework performs not only accurate prediction of the proposed user mobility but also optimal replication, utilizing these predictions, of the central server to achieve continuous service coverage. In addition, the framework requires no supervision and fewer resources to perform these functions due to use of the M2M networking. Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) help improve traffic safety and lessen traffic congestion. Roadside units (RSUs) play a key role in serving as the event and data broker in the form of vehicle-to-infrastructure communication to supply wireless and mobile vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Recently, hybrid VANET-sensor networks have attracted much attention as events are detected by sensor nodes and are spread to a wider area via VANETs, in which the number of RSUs is restricted due to high cost. This paper investigates the problem of minimizing the total cost of deploying RSUs and sensor nodes along the two sides and the median island of a two-lane road to cover the whole road, represented as a grid, and to form a connected VANET-sensor network. This problem is NP-complete by reduction to the NP-complete placement problem for a single-lane road. Therefore, this paper formulates the problem as an integer linear program and then proposes a center particle swarm optimization approach, in which a center particle is adopted for increasing the convergence speed. This paper studies the problem of spectrum-aware routing in a multi-hop, multi-channel cognitive radio network when malicious nodes in the secondary network attempt to block the path with mixed attacks. Based on the location and time-variant path delay information, we model the path discovery process as a non-cooperative stochastic game. By exploiting the structure of the underlying Markov Decision Process, we decompose the stochastic routing game into a series of stage games. For each stage game, we propose a distributed strategy learning mechanism based on stochastic fictitious play to learn the equilibrium strategies of joint relay-channel selection in the condition of both limited information exchange and potential routing-toward-primary attacks. We also introduce a trustworthiness evaluation mechanism based on a multi-arm bandit process for normal users to avoid relaying to the sink-hole attackers. In Mobile ad hoc Networks (MANETs), the packet scheduling process is considered the major challenge because of error-prone connectivity among mobile nodes that introduces intolerable delay and insufficient throughput with high packet loss. In this paper, a Modified Firefly Optimization Algorithm improved Fuzzy Scheduler-based Packet Scheduling (MFPA-FSPS) Mechanism is proposed for sustaining Quality of Service (QoS) in the network. This MFPA-FSPS mechanism included a Fuzzy-based priority scheduler by inheriting the merits of the Sugeno Fuzzy inference system that potentially and adaptively estimated packets' priority for guaranteeing optimal network performance. It further used the modified Firefly Optimization Algorithm to optimize the rules utilized by the fuzzy inference engine to achieve the potential packet scheduling process. This adoption of a fuzzy inference engine used dynamic optimization that guaranteed excellent scheduling of the necessitated packets at an appropriate time with minimized waiting time. The statistical validation of the proposed MFPAFSPS conducted using a one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test confirmed its predominance over the benchmarked schemes used for investigation. This paper focuses on the problem of broadcasting information in the most efficient manner in a large 2-D ad hoc wireless network at low SNR and under line-of-sight propagation. A new communication scheme is proposed, where source nodes first broadcast their data to the entire network, despite the lack of sufficient available power. The signal’s power is then reinforced via successive back-and-forth beamforming transmissions between different groups of nodes in the network, so that all nodes are able to decode the transmitted information at the end. This scheme is shown to achieve asymptotically the broadcast capacity of the network, which is expressed in terms of the largest singular value of the matrix of fading coefficients between the nodes in the network. The increasing use of shared, unlicensed spectrum bands by medical devices and nonmedical products highlights the need to address wireless coexistence to ensure medical device safety and effectiveness. This paper provides the first step to approximate the probability of a device coexisting in its intended environment by providing a generalized framework for modeling the environment. The application of this framework is shown through an 84-day spectrum survey of the 2.4–2.48 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical band in a hospital environment in the United States. A custom platform was used to monitor power flux spectral density and record received power. Channel utilization of three nonoverlapping channels of 20 MHz bandwidth—relative to IEEE 802.11 channels 1, 6, and 11—were calculated and fitted to a generalized extreme value distribution. Low channel utilization was observed ( $ <$10%) in the surveyed environment with sporadic occurrences of higher channel utilization ($ >$ 50%). Reported findings can be complementary to wireless coexistence testing. This paper can provide input to the development of a consensus standard for wireless device coexistence test methods and a consensus document focused on wireless medical device coexistence risk management. Opportunistic scheduling for a wireless network with hybrid links is studied in this paper. Specifically, two link types are considered: a link of the first type always has a much lower transmission rate than a link of the second type. To avoid starvation in the first type of links, two link types must be treated differently in opportunistic scheduling, and quality of service (QoS) constraints, such as maximum delay or minimum throughput, must be imposed on the first link type. Considering QoS constraints, a distributed opportunistic scheduling scheme is derived based on the optimal stopping theory. Two scenarios are considered for the QoS-oriented opportunistic scheduling scheme. In the first scenario, all links within the same link type follow the same rate distribution. Thus, QoS constraints are imposed on the entire link type. In the second scenario, links of the first type follow heterogeneous rate distributions. Thus, QoS requirements need to be imposed on links with the worst performance. Performance results show that the new opportunistic scheduling scheme outperforms the existing ones in most scenarios. Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are now key in today's new world. They are critically needed in many situations when it is crucial to form a network on the fly while not having the luxury of time or resources to configure devices, build infrastructure, or even have human interventions. Ad hoc networks have many applications. For instance, they can be used in battlefields, education, rescue missions, and many other applications. Such networks are characterized by high mobility, low resources of power, storage, and processing. They are infrastructure-less; this means that they don't use infrastructure equipment for communication. These networks rely instead on each other for routing and communication. MANETs use a hopping mechanism where each node in a network finds another node within its communication range and use it as a hop for delivering the message through another node and so on. In standard networks, there is dedicated equipment for specific functions such as routers, servers, firewalls, etc., while in ad hoc networks, every node performs multiple functions. For example, the routing function is performed by nodes. Hence, they are more vulnerable to attacks than standard networks. The main goal of this paper is to propose a solution for detecting black hole attacks using anomaly detection based on a support vector machine (SVM). This detection system aims at analyzing the traffic of the network and identifying anomalies by checking node behaviors. In the case of black hole attacks, the attacking nodes have some behavioral characteristics that are different from normal nodes. These characteristics can be effectively detected using our lightweight detection system. To experiment with the effectiveness of this solution, an OMNET++ simulator is used to generate traffic under a black hole attack. The traffic is then classified into malicious and non-malicious based on which the malicious node is identified. Ad hoc networks are temporary networks, created mainly for applications that are infrastructure-less. Such networks and network nodes demand special characteristics like mobile nodes having dynamic topology, wireless medium, heterogeneous deployment environment, and reactive or proactive routing depending on the nature of the network which includes network parameters such as node placement, mobility model, number of participants in the network, patterns of mobility, etc. Due to these characteristics and the mobility of network nodes, the process of routing is quite challenging in the ad hoc environment, especially when the node mobility is high. Bio-inspired routing can be an effective solution to meet all the design requirements and deal with the issues of tactical ad hoc networks. Different types of nature-inspired routing mechanisms are possible to use for tactical networks. This paper proposes the design of a novel Ant Colony Optimization-based routing strategy for ad hoc networks. Ant-based algorithms are dynamic and have adaptive behavior. Hence, they are competent for routing in ad hoc networks. Our proposed routing scheme is evaluated based on the network's performance by varying different parameters. The performance of our proposed ACO-based routing approach is also compared to some existing ad hoc routing mechanisms. Delay-tolerant networks (DTNs) are networks where there is no immediate connection between the source and the destination. Instead, nodes in these networks use a store–carry–forward method to route traffic. However, approaches that rely on flooding the network with unlimited copies of messages may not be effective if network resources are limited. On the other hand, quota-based approaches are more resource-efficient but can have low delivery rates and high delivery delays. This paper introduces the Enhanced Message Replication Technique (EMRT), which dynamically adjusts the number of message replicas based on a node's ability to quickly disseminate the message. This decision is based on factors such as current connections, encounter history, buffer size history, time-to-live values, and energy. The EMRT is applied to three different quota-based protocols: Spray and Wait, Encounter-Based Routing (EBR), and the Destination-Based Routing Protocol (DBRP). The simulation results show that applying the EMRT to these protocols improves the delivery ratio, overhead ratio, and latency average. For example, when combined with Spray and Wait, EBR, and DBRP, the delivery probability is improved by 13%, 8%, and 10%, respectively, while the latency average is reduced by 51%, 14%, and 13%, respectively. This paper studies the asymptotic properties of average area spectral efficiency (ASE) of a downlink cellular network in the limit of very dense base station (BS) and user densities. This asymptotic analysis relies on three assumptions: 1) interference is treated as noise; 2) the BS locations are drawn from a Poisson point process; and 3) the path loss function is bounded above satisfying mild regularity conditions. We consider three possible definitions of the average ASE, all of which give units of bits per second per unit bandwidth per unit area. When there is no constraint on the minimum operational signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and instantaneous full channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitter, the average ASE is proven to saturate to a constant, which we derive in a closed form. For the other two ASE definitions, wherein either a minimum SINR is enforced or CSI is not available, the average ASE is instead shown to collapse to zero at high BS density. We provide several familiar case studies for the class of considered path loss models, and demonstrate that our results cover most previous models and results on ultradense networks as special cases. In this paper, we examine the problem of designing and allocating transmission sequences to users in a mobile ad hoc network that has no spatial boundary. A basic tenet of the transmission sequence approach for addressing media access control (MAC) is that under normal operating conditions, there is no feedback-triggered retransmission. This obviously is a major departure from the Slotted-ALOHA or carrier-sense multiple-access (CSMA)-type approaches. While these traditional solutions enjoy excellent throughput performance, a fundamental drawback is that they are based on feedback information. For systems without a naturally defined central controller that can play the role of a base station, the task of providing feedback information could easily become unmanageable. This highlights the advantage of the feedback-free approach. A second advantage is the ability to handle unlimited spatial coverage. We propose in this paper a concept for MAC that is akin to frequency reuse. However, instead of reusing frequency, the new approach allows transmission sequences to be reused. A study of the transmission sequence approach against other approaches is conducted by comparing the minimal frame lengths that can guarantee the existence of conflict-free transmissions. Quality of Service (QoS) is a crucial aspect of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) that needs examination to demonstrate optimal performance. The scientific community is increasingly concerned with the challenge of developing an energy-aware clustering method for MANETs. This is owing to the fact that the battery-operated sensor devices that form the backbone of these wireless networks cannot be recharged. The selection of a cluster's leader is a difficult problem in MANET. Additionally, the research focuses on Optimal Route Selection (ORS) within the MANET context, acknowledging the significance of establishing efficient communication paths between cluster heads and member nodes. Through the integration of a reliability pair factor and node energy considerations, the proposed ORS algorithm generates optimal paths based on maximizing energy efficiency while minimizing the sum of hops between nodes. The study suggests a new algorithm based on the way waterwheel plants move and change their places as they explore and exploit new territory in the quest for food. The suggested method is named Binary Waterwheel Plant Algorithm (BWPA). In this method, a novel model is used to represent both the binary search space and the mapping from continuous to discrete spaces. Particularly, mathematical models of the fitness and cost functions used by the algorithm are constructed. Through the use of a reliability pair factor and node energy, the proposed research paper on Optimal Route Selection (ORS) generates the optimal path between the cluster head and member node and establishes the path based on the maximum energy and sum of hops among the nodes. By fusing the reactive power of differential evolution with the exhaustive search efficiency of the BWPA, the proposed method extends the life of networks. Various routing protocols have been proposed for ad hoc networks such as the Internet of Things (IoT). Most of the routing protocols introduced for IoT are specific to applications and networks. In the current literature, it is essential to configure all the network nodes with a single proposed protocol. Moreover, it is also possible for a single IoT network to consist of different kinds of nodes. Two or more IoT networks can also be connected to create a bigger heterogeneous network. Such networks may need various routing protocols with some gateway nodes installed. The role of gateway nodes should not be limited to the interconnection of different nodes. In this paper, a multi-mode hybrid routing mechanism is proposed that can be installed on all or a limited number of nodes in a heterogenous IoT network. The nodes configured with the proposed protocols are termed smart nodes. These nodes can be used to connect multiple IoT networks into one. Furthermore, a game-theory-based model is proposed that is used for intercommunication among the smart nodes to gain optimal efficiency. Various performance matrices are assessed under different network scenarios. There is an ongoing debate in the research and industry communities as to whether IEEE 802.11p or Third-Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long-Term Evolution (LTE) should be used for vehicular communications. In this paper, we argue that a hybrid vehicular network combining both technologies can increase the performance of the system. We first propose a mechanism to improve location-based routing in a hybrid vehicular network architecture by data and signaling traffic separation on independent wireless networks. We then develop analytical models to calculate the stochastic upper bound of the end-to-end delay (E2ED) for location-based routing in three different networking architecture alternatives based on a) short-range ad hoc only, b) cellular only, and c) the proposed hybrid ad hoc/cellular network. The analytical approach in this paper is based on the stochastic network calculus (SNC) theory, which provides a solid and uniform framework for analysis of the upper bound of the E2ED in communication networks. It is demonstrated that the proposed hybrid network provides a lower E2ED compared with the other two alternatives. Comparisons of realistic simulation results, carried out in NS-3, and analytical results show that the proposed delay bounds provide relatively tight approximations for the E2ED in the three alternative architectures for vehicular networks investigated in this paper. This paper reports experimental results on self-organizing wireless networks carried by small flying robots. Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs) composed of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are flexible, inexpensive, and fast to deploy. This makes them a very attractive technology for many civilian and military applications. Due to the high mobility of the nodes, maintaining a communication link between the UAVs is a challenging task. The topology of these networks is more dynamic than that of typical mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) and of typical vehicle ad hoc networks. As a consequence, the existing routing protocols designed for MANETs partly fail in tracking network topology changes. In this paper, we compare two different routing algorithms for ad hoc networks: optimized link-state routing (OLSR) and predictive OLSR (P-OLSR). The latter is an OLSR extension that we designed for FANETs; it takes advantage of the Global Positioning System (GPS) information available on board. To the best of our knowledge, P-OLSR is currently the only FANET-specific routing technique that has an available Linux implementation. We present results obtained by both media-access-control (MAC) layer emulations and real-world experiments. In the experiments, we used a testbed composed of two autonomous fixed-wing UAVs and a node on the ground. Our experiments evaluate the link performance and the communication range, as well as the routing performance. Security is the main concern and bottleneck for widely deployed wireless applications due to the fact that wireless channels are vulnerable to attacks and that wireless bandwidth is a constrained resource. In this sense, it is desirable to adaptively achieve security according to the available resource. In particular, mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) based on cooperative communication (CC) present significant challenges to security issues, as well as issues of network performance and management. In this paper, we focus on authentication and topology control issues. Although authentication and topology control are separately studied in most existing works, they are, in fact, closely correlated in MANETs. For example, both authentication and topology control schemes have significant impacts on throughput. In this paper, we jointly consider authentication and topology control. Specifically, we analyze the effective throughput with upper layer authentication schemes and physical-layer schemes related to channel conditions and relay selections for CCs. A joint authentication and topology control (JATC) scheme is proposed to improve the throughput. JATC is formulated as a discrete stochastic optimization problem, which does not require prior perfect channel status but only channel estimate. We also mathematically prove the tracking convergence property and the convergence rate of the discrete stochastic optimization approach in this paper. Recent advances in wireless technologies have given rise to the emergence of vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). In such networks, the limited coverage of WiFi and the high mobility of the nodes generate frequent topology changes and network fragmentations. For these reasons, and taking into account that there is no central manager entity, routing packets through the network is a challenging task. Therefore, offering an efficient routing strategy is crucial to the deployment of VANETs. This paper deals with the optimal parameter setting of the optimized link state routing (OLSR), which is a well-known mobile ad hoc network routing protocol, by defining an optimization problem. This way, a series of representative metaheuristic algorithms (particle swarm optimization, differential evolution, genetic algorithm, and simulated annealing) are studied in this paper to find automatically optimal configurations of this routing protocol. In addition, a set of realistic VANET scenarios (based in the city of Málaga) have been defined to accurately evaluate the performance of the network under our automatic OLSR. In the experiments, our tuned OLSR configurations result in better quality of service (QoS) than the standard request for comments (RFC 3626), as well as several human experts, making it amenable for utilization in VANET configurations. A source coding problem in which a central source has to satisfy the demands of several receivers, with each receiver having some subset of the messages (side-information) held by the source is considered. The source has knowledge of only the cardinality of the side-information at each receiver. The encoding scheme used by the source to transmit at a higher throughput is referred to as an informed source code. A technique to obtain informed source codes by using $\ell $ -th Near Maximum Distance Separable (Near-MDS) Codes is presented. The advantage of using $\ell $ -th Near-MDS codes is the reduction in field size required. For certain informed source coding problems, the code obtained from $\ell $ -th Near-MDS codes is shown to be of the minimum length under certain field size restrictions. The same technique can be used for a given index coding problem to obtain index codes. The index codes obtained through this technique are optimal for, but not limited to, special cases of index coding problems discussed in the paper. Finding an optimal solution to a general index coding problem is NP hard and this technique helps in finding binary suboptimal solutions. In this paper, we examine the benefits of multiple antenna communication in random wireless networks, the topology of which is modeled by stochastic geometry. The setting is the Poisson bipolar model introduced in [1], which is a natural model for ad-hoc and device-to-device networks. The primary finding is that, with the knowledge of channel state information between a receiver and its associated transmitter, by zero-forcing successive interference cancellation, and for appropriate antenna configurations, the ergodic spectral efficiency can be made to scale linearly with both: 1) the minimum of the number of transmit and receive antennas and 2) the density of nodes. This scaling law is achieved by using the multiple transmit antennas to send multiple data streams (e.g., through an open-loop transmission method) and by exploiting the receive antennas to cancel interference. Furthermore, when a receiver is able to learn channel state information from a certain number of near interferers, higher scaling gains can be achieved when a successive interference cancellation method is used. Both results require rich scattering environments. A major implication of the derived scaling laws is that, under this scattering assumption, spatial multiplexing transmission methods are essential for obtaining better and eventually optimal scaling laws in random wireless networks with multiple antennas. Deployment of low-cost power beacons (PBs) is a promising solution for dedicated wireless power transfer (WPT) in future wireless networks. In this paper, we present a tractable model for PB-assisted millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless ad hoc networks, where each transmitter (TX) harvests energy from all PBs and then uses the harvested energy to transmit information to its desired receiver. Our model accounts for realistic aspects of WPT and mmWave transmissions, such as power circuit activation threshold, allowed maximum harvested power, maximum transmit power, beamforming, and blockage. Using stochastic geometry, we obtain the Laplace transform of the aggregate received power at the TX to calculate the power coverage probability. We approximate and discretize the transmit power of each TX into a finite number of discrete power levels in log scale to compute the channel and total coverage probability. We compare our analytical predictions to simulations and observe good accuracy. The proposed model allows insights into effect of system parameters, such as transmit power of PBs, PB density, main lobe beamwidth, and power circuit activation threshold on the overall coverage probability. Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are intended to work without a fixed framework and provide dependable interchanges to ground vehicles, boats, airplanes, or people and structure a self-mending process that will empower persistent correspondences in any event, when at least one of its nodes are debilitated or briefly expelled from the system. Notwithstanding, MANETs demonstrate themselves to be progressively harder to create for enormous systems with hundreds or thousands more nodes than initially envisioned. In our proposed technique, the node switches its communication mode depending on the connectivity of the adjacent nodes. The transmission power of each node will be calculated with the help of two major scenarios i.e., tree scenario and zone scenario. The autonomous clustering of the nodes among the tree and the zone scenario will be channelized by a comparison of the transmission power (residual energy) among the nodes. The inter and the intra communication of the node is also discussed in the paper. The result will be carried out by the simulation work in various perspectives, such as checking the percentage level of malicious nodes, traffic density, transmission power, and the longevity of nodes. Aeronautical Ad-hoc Networks (AANETs) have been proposed as the promising complement to terrestrial networks for promoting the global interconnection to provide in-flight network service, emergency communication, vessel traffic service, etc. However, the large network scale of AANETs may induce severe synchronization overhead when the traditional topology-based networking algorithms are adopted. Moreover, the high-dynamic topology and changeable flight routes make the existing position-based routing algorithms suffer loop routing and forwarding failure. Motivated by these problems, this paper aims at developing efficient and low-cost networking and routing algorithms relying on the concept of dynamic virtual topology which organizes the disordered topology of AANETs into a structural and simplified one. The basic idea is that each connected aircraft is assigned with a unique and sequentially increased Virtual Identifier (VID) and thus all the connected aircrafts are organized into a virtual cluster consisting of one trunk and several branches. An event-driven synchronization mechanism is leveraged for maintaining the virtual topology as well as relieving the communication burden imposed by periodical broadcasting. By jointly considering the geographic locations and the virtual locations of aircrafts, we formulate the routing problem in AANETs as a weighted distance minimization problem, and further propose a novel routing algorithm, namely Trunk-Branch Cooperation aided Routing (TBCR) algorithm. Specifically, TBCR employs the geographic greedy forwarding strategy for enhancing its flexibility and boosts the routing efficiency by adopting the loop-free virtual topology based local forwarding. For extending the networking and routing algorithms to the global range, a multi-domain routing solution is also provided. Extensive experimental results show that the proposed Virtual Topology based Networking (VTN) cooperated with TBCR can reduce at least 30% average end-to-end transmission delay in large-scale AANETs and provide more than 90% lower synchronization overhead than the existing solutions. This paper addresses the problem of energy-aware multihop cooperation among the mobile terminals (MTs) that cooperatively download a common content from a wireless network. The base station (BS) unicasts or multicasts the content to selected MTs that, in turn, either unicast or multicast it to other MTs, forming a multihop ad hoc network with a predefined maximum allowed number of hops. This paper presents the optimization formulations whose solution gives the exact optimal set of receiving MTs from the BS, the optimal multihop ad hoc network, and the optimal unicasting and multicasting transmission bit rates that minimize the total energy consumption of the MTs. Second, a simplified multicasting formulation is proposed that has a close-to-optimal performance with notably lower computational complexity. Third, interference avoidance among the transmitting MTs is considered. For each presented formulation, the complexity is identified, and results show that some formulations can be efficiently solved for medium network sizes, while others are more computationally complex. Thus, polynomial-time heuristic solutions are presented that have close-to-optimal performance. In this paper, we focus on one of the key technologies for the fifth-generation wireless communication networks, massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO), by investigating two of its most relevant architectures: 1) to provide in-band backhaul for the ultra-dense network (UDN) of self-backhauled small cells (SCs), and 2) to provide direct access (DA) to user equipments (UEs). Through comprehensive 3GPP-based system-level simulations and analytical formulations, we show the end-to-end UE rates achievable with these two architectures. Differently from the existing works, we provide results for two strategies of self-backhauled SC deployments, namely random and ad-hoc, where in the latter SCs are purposely positioned close to UEs to achieve line-of-sight (LoS) access links. We also evaluate the optimal backhaul and access time resource partition due to the in-band self-backhauling (s-BH) operations. Our results show that the ad-hoc deployment of self-backhauled SCs closer to the UEs with optimal resource partition and with directive antenna patterns, provides rate improvements for cell-edge UEs that amount to ${30\%}$ and tenfold gain, as compared to mMIMO DA architecture with pilot reuse 3 and reuse 1, respectively. On the other hand, mMIMO s-BH underperforms mMIMO DA above the median value of the UE rates when the effect of pilot contamination is less severe, and the LoS probability of the DA links improves. Broadcasting is an important operation in wireless networks where control information is usually propagated as broadcasts for the realization of most networking protocols. In traditional ad hoc networks, broadcasts are conducted on a common channel, which is shared by all nodes in the network. However, in cognitive radio (CR) ad hoc networks, unlicensed users may observe heterogeneous spectrum availability, which is unknown to other unlicensed users before the control information was broadcast. Thus, it is extremely challenging that broadcasts can be successfully conducted without knowing the spectrum availability information in advance. In addition, since broadcast collisions (i.e., simultaneous reception of broadcast messages at the same node) often lead to the waste of network resources, they should be efficiently mitigated in multihop scenarios. In this paper, a quality-of-service (QoS)-based broadcast protocol under Blind Information for multihop CR ad hoc networks, i.e., \QB^2\IC, is proposed with the aim of having a high success rate and short broadcast delay. In our design, we do not assume that unlicensed users are aware of the network topology, the spectrum availability information, and time synchronization information. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper that investigates the broadcast issue in multihop CR ad hoc networks under blind information. For IEEE 802.11 networks with multiple basic service sets (BSSs), most studies have focused on how to allocate different frequency sub-channels to BSSs for minimizing the co-channel interference. With the significant increase of the sub-channel bandwidth, however, it becomes increasingly important to study the network performance with universal frequency reuse. In this paper, we focus on an uplink $M$ -BSS IEEE 802.11 network, where all the BSSs share the frequency band rather than operate at different sub-channels. By dividing the nodes in each BSS into multiple groups according to the set of access points (APs) they can be heard by, the steady-state points of $M$ BSSs in saturated conditions are obtained as the functions of the number of nodes in each group and the initial backoff window size of nodes of each BSS. The maximum network throughput is further characterized by optimally choosing the initial backoff window sizes of all the nodes and shown to be closely dependent on the percentage of nodes that can be heard by multiple APs. The comparison with orthogonal frequency division reveals that although the maximum network throughput is degraded due to interference among BSSs, a higher network data rate can still be achieved by universal frequency reuse, which makes it a preferable option for multi-BSS IEEE 802.11 networks. In this paper, we analyze the capacity and delay in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), considering the correlation of node mobility (correlated mobility). Previous studies on correlated mobility investigated the maximum capacity with the corresponding delay in several subcases; the problem of optimal capacity under various delay constraints (the optimal capacity–delay tradeoff) still remains open. To this end, we deeply explore the characteristics of correlated mobility and figure out the fundamental relationships between the network performance and the scheduling parameters. Based on that, we establish the overall upper bound of the capacity–delay tradeoff in all the subcases of correlated mobility. Then, we try to obtain the achievable lower bound by identifying the optimal scheduling parameters on certain constraints. In this paper, we propose a novel multichannel network with infrastructure support, which is called an MC-IS network, that has not been studied in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to study such an MC-IS network. Our proposed MC-IS network has a number of advantages over three existing conventional networks: a single-channel wireless ad hoc network (called an SC-AH network), a multichannel wireless ad hoc network (called an MC-AH network), and a single-channel network with infrastructure support (called an SC-IS network). In particular, the network capacity of our proposed MC-IS network is \sqrtn\log n times higher than that of an SC-AH network and an MC-AH network and the same as that of an SC-IS network, where n is the number of nodes in the network. The average delay of our MC-IS network is \sqrt{\log n/n} times lower than that of an SC-AH network and an MC-AH network and \min\{C_{I},m\} times lower than the average delay of an SC-IS network, where CI and m denote the number of channels dedicated for infrastructure communications and the number of interfaces mounted at each infrastructure node, respectively. Our analysis on an MC-IS network equipped with omnidirectional antennas has been extended to an MC-IS network equipped with directional antennas only, which are named as an MC-IS-DA network. We show that an MC-IS-DA network has an even lower delay of c/(\lfloor \text2\pi/\theta\rfloor\cdot CI) compared with an SC-IS network and our MC-IS network. For example, when CI=\text{12} and \theta=\pi/\text12, an MC-IS-DA can further reduce the delay by 24 times lower than that of an MC-IS network and by 288 times lower than that of an SC-IS network. In the first part of the paper, we modeled and characterized the underwater radio channel in shallowwaters. In the second part, we analyze the application requirements for an underwaterwireless sensor network (U-WSN) operating in the same environment and perform detailed simulations. We consider two localization applications, namely self-localization and navigation aid, and propose algorithms that work well under the specific constraints associated with U-WSN, namely low connectivity, low data rates and high packet loss probability. We propose an algorithm where the sensor nodes collaboratively estimate their unknown positions in the network using a low number of anchor nodes and distance measurements from the underwater channel. Once the network has been self-located, we consider a node estimating its position for underwater navigation communicating with neighboring nodes. We also propose a communication system and simulate the whole electromagnetic U-WSN in the Castalia simulator to evaluate the network performance, including propagation impairments (e.g., noise, interference), radio parameters (e.g., modulation scheme, bandwidth, transmit power), hardware limitations (e.g., clock drift, transmission buffer) and complete MAC and routing protocols. We also explain the changes that have to be done to Castalia in order to perform the simulations. In addition, we propose a parametric model of the communication channel that matches well with the results from the first part of this paper. Delay-tolerant networks often adopt the message replication methodology to increase the opportunity that destinations can receive messages from a source node in a network. Repeatedly replicating messages, however, consumes significant resources such as local buffer space on nodes and internode communication bandwidth. Previous buffer management and scheduling policies mainly contributed to a simple scenario of message unicasting from a source to a singular destination in a network. When message multicasting toward multiple destinations is considered, previous solutions perform inefficiently. This paper proposes a new buffer management and scheduling policy for message multicasting in delay-tolerant networks. The proposed policy is an optimal-based design with a new utility function, which can prioritize messages in a buffer for maximizing the successful delivery rate in a network. In this paper, the outage performance of wireless networks with unstructured topologies is investigated. The network reliability perspective of graph theory is used to obtain the network outage polynomial of generalized wireless networks for both uncorrelated and correlated wireless channels. A relationship is established between the max-flow min-cut theorem and key communication performance indicators. The diversity order is equal to the size of the minimum cut-set between source and destination, and the coding gain is the number of cut-sets with size equal to the minimum cut. An ergodic capacity analysis of arbitrary network topologies based on the network outage polynomial is also presented. The problem of routing security in vehicular ad hoc networks has become a major concern for researchers. Compared with cryptography-based solutions, trust-based solutions are considered to be more acceptable as a promising approach, which mainly define two operations: trust computing and security application. In this paper we first study trust properties and construct a novel trust inference model, where two trust attributes named subjective trust and recommendation trust, are selected to quantify the trust level of a specific vehicle. The SCGM(1,1)-weighted Markov prediction algorithm based on fluctuation recognition is utilized to calculate the subjective trust accurately, meanwhile a new evaluation method of recommendation credibility based on the feedback mechanism is introduced for the calculation of recommendation trust. We subsequently exploit the advantages of mesh structure and design a light-weight trust-aware multicast routing protocol (i.e., LTMRP), which can establish secure and reliable communication paths by selecting trusted relay vehicles. To further improve the routing efficiency, two mechanisms including forwarding nodes reuse mechanism and trust-aware route handoff mechanism are proposed. Simulation verification and comparison of the relevant trust models and trust-based protocols are accomplished by three simulation platforms (i.e., Netlogo, SUMO, and NS-2).The convincing results show that our trust model obtains strong resistibility to multiple malicious attacks. As network resources are shared between many users, resource management must be a key part of any communication system as it is needed to provide seamless communication and to ensure that applications and servers receive their required Quality-of-Service. However, mobile environments also need to consider handover issues. Furthermore, in a highly mobile environment, traditional reactive approaches to handover are inadequate and thus proactive techniques have been investigated. Recent research in proactive handover techniques defined two key parameters: Time Before Handover (TBH) and Network Dwell Time (NDT) for a mobile node in any given networking topology. Using this approach, it is possible to enhance resource management in common networks using probabilistic mechanisms because it is possible to express contention for resources in terms of No Contention, Partial Contention, and Full Contention. This proactive approach is further enhanced by the use of a contention queue to detect contention between incoming requests and those waiting for service. This paper therefore presents a new methodology to support proactive resource allocation for future networks such as Vehicular Ad-Hoc Networks. The proposed approach has been applied to a vehicular testbed and results are presented that show that this approach can improve overall network performance in mobile heterogeneous environments. In this paper, we investigate the request routing delay of opportunistic routing for cache-enabled wireless networks considering uncorrelated and temporally correlated wireless channels. We model wireless channel variation at different time scales via two approaches: an abstract modeling approach where we model the variation considering Rayleigh fading and shadowing channel models and an empirical approach where the variation is modeled directly using signal strength measurements. We develop Markovian models to analyze the performance of opportunistic forwarding, leverage the wireless channel models to determine the packet transmission success probabilities and then utilize them to obtain the request routing delay. We first perform numerical experiments and simulations considering Rayleigh fading and shadowing channel models and then conduct a trace-based evaluation using signal strength measurements collected over a wireless sensor network testbed. Our experiments demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of our Markovian model in determining the request routing delay in real-world settings.
