Guiding and dynamically modulating topological defects are critical challenges in defect engineering of liquid crystals. Here, we employ molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the transition dynamics and relative kinetic stability of defect patterns in two-dimensional nematic Gay–Berne liquid crystals confined within rectangular geometries. We observe the formation of various defect patterns including long-axis, diagonal, X-shaped, composite, and bend configurations under different confinement conditions. The competition between boundary effects and the uniformity of nematic orientation induces the continuous realignment of liquid crystal molecules, facilitating the spatially continuous transformation of defect patterns over time. This transition involves changes in both defect types and their locations, typically initiating from defect regions. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the relative stability of these defect patterns can be effectively controlled by adjusting confinement parameters and external field conditions. Our findings provide fundamental insights into the transition kinetics of defect patterns in confined nematic liquid crystals, thereby enhancing our ability to manipulate topological defects for advanced applications. Physics-based, atom-centered machine learning (ML) representations have been instrumental to the effective integration of ML within the atomistic simulation community. Many of these representations build off the idea of atoms as having spherical, or isotropic, interactions. In many communities, there is often a need to represent groups of atoms, either to increase the computational efficiency of simulation via coarse-graining or to understand molecular influences on system behavior. In such cases, atom-centered representations will have limited utility, as groups of atoms may not be well-approximated as spheres. In this work, we extend the popular Smooth Overlap of Atomic Positions (SOAP) ML representation for systems consisting of non-spherical anisotropic particles or clusters of atoms. We show the power of this anisotropic extension of SOAP, which we deem AniSOAP, in accurately characterizing liquid crystal systems and predicting the energetics of Gay–Berne ellipsoids and coarse-grained benzene crystals. With our study of these prototypical anisotropic systems, we derive fundamental insights on how molecular shape influences mesoscale behavior and explain how to reincorporate important atom–atom interactions typically not captured by coarse-grained models. Given the significant progress in the field of meta-lenses over the past decade, tunable meta-lenses have garnered considerable attention for their flexible functionality. Various mechanisms have been developed to realize high-performance tunable meta-lenses, including electricity, strain, thermal effects, and materials, such as phase-change materials and liquid crystals. However, currently, most tunable meta-lenses are limited to discrete focal lengths, typically only involving two spots, and the potential of phase-change materials, such as Ge2Sb2Te5, Sb2S3, etc., has not yet been fully exploited. Here, we propose a design approach to achieve tunable meta-lenses with continuous focal length manipulation working at 1550 nm based on phase-change materials (Sb2S3). The focal length can be gradually tuned from 35 to 55 μm during the conversion process between crystalline and amorphous states. The meta-atoms are rectangular shapes of different sizes and orientations to provide certain phase compensations from propagation and Pancharatnam–Berry phases, respectively. The tunable Airy beam, Bessel beam, and deflection of the meta-lens focal spot are also demonstrated to show the universality of the proposed design. Patchy particles are an intriguing subject of study and indeed a model system in the field of soft matter physics. In recent years, patchy particle models have been applied to describe a wide variety of systems, including colloidal crystals, macromolecular interactions, liquid crystals, and nanoparticle assemblies. Given the importance of the topic, rationalizing and capturing the basic features of these models is crucial to their correct application in specific systems. In this study, we extend the ion-activated attractive patchy particles model previously employed to elucidate the phase behavior of protein solutions in the presence of trivalent salts. Our extension incorporates the effect of repulsion between unoccupied and occupied binding sites, depicted as patches. Furthermore, we examine the influence of model parameters on the liquid–vapor coexistence region within the phase diagram, employing numerical methods. We investigated the spectrum of density fluctuations of a liquid crystal, CB7CB, in two different orientations by using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. Our analysis, based on Bayesian principles, revealed that high-frequency collective excitations propagate through this mesoscale-ordered sample in a peculiar manner that lies somewhere between those observed in liquids and crystalline systems. Interestingly, when we probed longer length scales, a more pronounced solid-like response emerged. This was mainly characterized by anomalously sharp inelastic excitations and the onset of shear mode propagation. High tilt angle (45 °) ferroelectric liquid crystal (F L C) in surface stabilized geometry, having no chiral smectic A (S m A ∗) phase, has been studied for the reorientation of the smectic layers near the transition temperature (T c). The electro-optical studies have shown the stripe domain formation in which the liquid crystal molecules are aligned along the rubbing direction, but the smectic layers are tilted away from the rubbing direction at room temperature. In such high tilt angle F L C s , the molecular alignment and smectic layer formation start from bottom and top rubbed grooves at T c. The domain formation of the FLC takes place in the middle of the top and bottom surfaces due to the frustration of the dipolar interaction. The smectic layer switching is observed by optical microscopy and confirmed by the dielectric spectroscopy method near T c of S m C ∗ and chiral nematic phases. Domain switching has shown a larger switching angle than the molecular tilt angle within the smectic layer. These studies are expected to be significant for understanding the smectic layer structure and the domain switching process, which may pave the way for large optical switching devices. Liquid crystals consisting of biaxial particles can exhibit a much richer phase behavior than their uniaxial counterparts. Usually, one has to rely on simulation results to understand the phase diagram of these systems since very few analytical results exist. In this work, we apply fundamental measure theory, which allows us to derive free energy functionals for hard particles from first principles and with high accuracy, to systems of hard cylinders, cones, and spherotriangles. We provide a general recipe for incorporating biaxial liquid crystal order parameters into fundamental measure theory and use this framework to obtain the phase boundaries for the emergence of orientational order in the considered systems. We study an air–crown glass planar interface that includes a thin layer of a cholesteric liquid crystal doped with silver spheres of nanometer size. We propose a new theoretical model for the propagation of electromagnetic waves through the liquid crystal part and use the Marcuvitz–Schwinger form of the Maxwell equations to compute guided surface wave profiles. The results suggest the presence of anisotropic surface modes with negligible attenuation. This study is concerned with a theory of two-step nucleation and growth of crystals in a metastable liquid. This mechanism is that crystalline nuclei formation occurs in dense liquid clusters suspended in the solution. These clusters contain higher solution concentration and viscosity, leading to a lower surface free energy barrier and faster phase transition route. The theory is based on growth laws of crystals during the two-step bulk phase transformation. At the initial stage, the crystals evolve in a diffusion-limited environment with almost unchanged supersaturation. At the second stage, they become larger, move beyond these clusters, and evolve in accordance with a hyperbolic tangent law. A generalized particle growth law joining the first and second stages is obtained by stitching the diffusion limited and hyperbolic tangent laws. On this basis, an integrodifferential model of the evolution of a polydisperse ensemble of crystals was formulated and solved. The crystal-size distribution function increases and the solution supersaturation remains practically unchanged until the particle size corresponds to a transition in the particle growth rate from a diffusion-limited branch to a hyperbolic tangent branch. This is followed by an increase in the crystal growth rate, a decrease in the distribution function and solution supersaturation. Then the distribution function increases up to the maximum size of crystals grown in the solution. A sufficiently long time interval of almost constant supersaturation and the N-shaped behavior of the distribution function are the consequences of a two-step nucleation and growth mechanisms. Confined liquid crystals (LCs) exhibit complex and intriguing structures, which are fascinating fundamental problems in soft matter. The helical structure of cylindrical cavities is of great importance in LC studies, particularly for their application in optical devices. In this study, we employ molecular dynamics simulations to explore the behavior of achiral smectic-B LCs confined in narrow cylindrical cavities, where geometric frustration plays an important role. By increasing the cylinder size, LCs exhibit a transition from multi-helical to layered structures. Notably, we observe two stable structures, namely the helical structure and the layered structure, at moderate cylinder size. We also investigate the effects of the arrangement of cylindrical wall particles (hexagonal or square array) and anchoring strength on the LC structure. Our findings reveal that both the hexagonal array and strong anchoring strength promote the formation of helical structures. Our study provides novel insights into the confinement physics of LCs and highlights the potential for achieving helical structures in achiral LCs, which will expand the future applications of LCs. Molecular dynamics simulation produces three-dimensional data on molecular structures. The classification of molecular structure is an important task. Conventionally, various order parameters are used to classify different structures of liquid and crystal. Recently, machine learning (ML) methods have been proposed based on order parameters to find optimal choices or use them as input features of neural networks. Conventional ML methods still require manual operation, such as calculating the conventional order parameters and manipulating data to impose rotational/translational invariance. Conversely, deep learning models that satisfy invariance are useful because they can automatically learn and classify three-dimensional structural features. However, in addition to the difficulty of making the learned features explainable, deep learning models require information on large structures for highly accurate classification, making it difficult to use the obtained parameters for structural analysis. In this work, we apply two types of graph neural network models, the graph convolutional network (GCN) and the tensor embedded atom network (TeaNet), to classify the structures of Lennard-Jones (LJ) systems and water systems. Both models satisfy invariance, while GCN uses only length information between nodes. TeaNet uses length and orientation information between nodes and edges, allowing it to recognize molecular geometry efficiently. TeaNet achieved a highly accurate classification with an extremely small molecular structure, i.e., when the number of input molecules is 17 for the LJ system and 9 for the water system, the accuracy is 98.9% and 99.8%, respectively. This is an advantage of our method over conventional order parameters and ML methods such as GCN, which require a large molecular structure or the information of wider area neighbors. Furthermore, we verified that TeaNet could build novel order parameters without manual operation. Because TeaNet can recognize extremely small local structures with high accuracy, all structures can be mapped to a low-dimensional parameter space that can explain structural features. The computation of entropy in liquids and liquid crystal (LC) phases is a big challenge in statistical physics. In this work, we extend the two-phase thermodynamic model (2PT) to shape anisotropic soft repulsive spherocylinders (SRSs) and report the absolute values of entropy for different LC phases for a range of aspect ratios L/D = 2 − 5. We calculate the density of states for different LC phases and decompose it into contributions arising from translational and rotational degrees of freedom. The translational and rotational modes are further partitioned into diffusive, gas-like, and non-diffusive, solid-like components using a fluidicity factor. In the dilute limit, the entropy values obtained from the 2PT method match exactly those of an ideal rigid rotor. We find that, for a given packing fraction, the magnitude of the total entropy is roughly equal regardless of the different LC phases associated with different aspect ratios. We also compute the excess entropy (for L/D = 5) and compare those with the values obtained using the standard integration approach of MD or Monte Carlo equation of state of SRS. The values obtained using both approaches match very well. The rotational and translational fluidicity factors are further used to determine the phase boundaries of different LC phases. The elastic behavior of nematics is commonly described in terms of the three so-called bulk deformation modes, i.e., splay, twist, and bend. However, the elastic free energy contains also other terms, often denoted as saddle–splay and splay–bend, which contribute, for instance, in confined systems. The role of such terms is controversial, partly because of the difficulty of their experimental determination. The saddle–splay (K24) and splay–bend (K13) elastic constants remain elusive also for theories; indeed, even the possibility of obtaining unambiguous microscopic expressions for these quantities has been questioned. Here, within the framework of Onsager theory with Parsons–Lee correction, we obtain microscopic estimates of the deformation free energy density of hard rod nematics in the presence of different director deformations. In the limit of a slowly changing director, these are directly compared with the macroscopic elastic free energy density. Within the same framework, we derive also closed microscopic expressions for all elastic coefficients of rodlike nematics. We find that the saddle–splay constant K24 is larger than both K11 and K22 over a wide range of particle lengths and densities. Moreover, the K13 contribution comes out to be crucial for the consistency of the results obtained from the analysis of the microscopic deformation free energy density calculated for variants of the splay deformation. Here we report the design, synthesis, and photoresponsive behavior of supramolecular liquid crystalline (LC) materials based on benzenetricarboxamide and di‐ortho substituted azobenzene. Differential scanning calorimetry, polarized optical microscopy, and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering studies confirm the formation of columnar tetragonal mesophase at room‐temperature. Photoisomerization studies reveal the visible light responsiveness of compounds in solution. Smart windows have come to the fore in modern buildings and intelligent information equipment drawing upon their dynamic control over light transmission. Liquid crystals tactfully manipulate light transmission depending on their microcosmic molecular orientations, emerging as new favorite functional materials for smart windows. However, most liquid crystal window technologies require continuous electricity for operation in luminous transparency and still perform a trade‐off between film formation performance and dimming functions. As key components of building structures, windows shall be kept transparent for an extended period. For the convenience of large‐scale processing, polymer matrices are indispensable. Given that, reverse‐operation‐mode dimming films, which are transparent to achieve daylighting in their natural or no power‐input states and become opaque to block sunlight through electric input on demand, are highly desired. Here, by introducing a photolabile amine, the synchronous light‐induced formation of polymer networks and enhancement of electrohydrodynamic instabilities in mesogenic materials is successfully executed. Relying on this creative and effective approach, reverse‐operation‐mode polymer network liquid crystal films having simultaneous modulation capability of visible light and near‐infrared light from solar irradiation are skillfully fabricated, promising applications in versatile energy‐saving smart windows. Owing to the passive nature of liquid crystal (LC) materials, achieving luminous displays using pure LC materials is challenging. In addition, it is difficult to achieve a fast switching time using pristine ferroelectric LC devices without compromising their cell thickness. Herein, we have developed a fast switching and highly luminescent electro-optical device by dispersing a minute concentration of bimetallic nanoparticles (Au@Ag NPs) having a spherical gold core and a silver shell within a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) host matrix, ZLI3654. Au@Ag core–shell NPs having synergic attributes of both counterparts were successfully synthesized by a facile seed-mediated route. The Au core helps to tune the shape of the Ag shell and provides enhanced electron density as well as improved stability against oxidation. Introducing nanoparticles induces little structural modifications to the host FLC, resulting in an improvement in the mesogenic alignment. Interestingly, ∼29-fold enhancement in the photoluminescence (PL) intensity is observed on dispersing 0.25 wt% of Au@Ag NPs into the FLC host matrix. The enhanced electromagnetic field in the FLC-nanocomposite is attributed to the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance of Au@Ag NPs, which strengthens the photon absorption rates by the FLC molecules, culminating in the massive enrichment of the PL intensity. In addition, the improved localized electric field inside the FLC device led to a noticeable enhancement in the spontaneous polarization, dielectric permittivity, and, most interestingly, ∼53% fastening in the switching time at an optimum concentration (0.25 wt%) of Au@Ag NPs. The improved electro-optical parameters of the Au@Ag NPs/FLC composite have been compared with the performance of both pristine Au NPs/FLC and Ag NPs/FLC composites, respectively, for the comprehensiveness of the study. In this paper, we present the synthesis and characterisation of an anthraquinone-based discotic liquid crystal (DLC), AFLC-14-doped ceric phosphate, a novel composite ion exchanger which exhibits superior ion exchange properties. The incorporation of AFLC-14 betwixt the layers of ceric phosphate aims to strengthen the material’s thermal property, adsorption capacity, and disinfectant properties along with ion-exchange capabilities. The reported material underwent extensive physico-chemical characterisation using various analytical techniques, including FTIR, UV-vis spectrophotometry, XRD analysis, SEM imaging, TGA/DTA studies and elemental investigation. Additionally, ion-exchange characteristics were investigated, encompassing ion-exchange capacity, concentration dependency, thermal property, adsorption studies for alkaline earth and heavy/transition metal ions, and binary separation experiments. Our findings reveal that the incorporation of a DLC betwixt ceric phosphate matrix significantly improves the exchanger’s overall performance. Notably, the hybrid ion exchanger exhibits remarkable selectivity for mercury (II) ions, indicating its potential for selective ion removal applications in environmental remediation and water purification processes. Entanglement in a soft condensed matter system is enabled in the form of entangled disclination lines by using colloidal particles in nematic liquid crystals. These topological excitations are manifested as colloidal entanglement at equilibrium. How to further utilize nonequilibrium disclination lines to manipulate colloidal entanglement remains a nontrivial and challenging task. In this work, we use experiments and simulations to demonstrate the reconfigurations of nematic colloidal entanglement in light-driven spatiotemporal evolutions of disclination lines. Colloidal entanglement can sense subtle changes in the topological structures of disclination lines and realize chirality conversion. This conversion is manifested as the "domino effect" of the collective rotation of colloids in the disclination lines. By programming the topological patterns and the geometry of the disclination lines, colloidal entanglement can be assembled and split. More remarkably, a double-helix entangled structure can be formed by controlling the changes in the morphology of the disclination lines. AbstractSurface reconstruction has always been a pain point in the study of short-chain perfluoroalkyl acrylate polymers, and how to maintain the balance between environmental protection and good performance is the key issue. We exploited the high efficiency and selectivity of the reaction between the isophorone di-isocyanate group and the hydroxyl group, and the rigid cyclohexane structure contained in their molecule to efficiently prepare a series of novel fluoro acrylate monomers (IFAM) containing rigid cyclohexane as mesogenic core and their homopolymers (PIFAM) with different lengths of short-chain perfluoroalkyl side chains. Their structures, liquid crystal behavior, thermal properties, surface chemical compositions, surface morphologies, and hydrophobicity were characterized and comparatively studied by FTIR, NMR, XRD, POM, DSC, TGA, XPS, AFM, and static/dynamic contact angle tester and dodecafluoroheptyl methacrylate (DFMA) and its homopolymer as a contrast. The results demonstrated that both the synthesized monomers and homopolymers possessed the expected chemical structures with thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior. Furthermore, the thermal stability and hydrophobicity of the polymers increased with the extension of the fluorocarbon chain length. The incorporation of the mesocrystalline motif and appropriate length of fluoroalkyl tails in the PIFAM polymers would enhance hydrophobic stability, as it promoted the crystallinity of the side chains and limited the structural rearrangement of the fluorocarbon chains. This study offers a straightforward method for synthesizing fluoro acrylate polymers with stable surface properties, highlighting their potential application in hydrophobic coatings. Smart surfaces, distinguished by their dynamic responses to environmental changes, may enhance the functionality, interactivity, and efficiency of materials and devices. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are ideal candidates for creating smart surfaces, allowing reversible topographical changes in response to environmental stimuli. However, traditional thermoset LCE preparation methods require complex manufacturing processes, including photopolymerization, and the resulting surfaces (often pillars) are nonreprogrammable and nonrecyclable. In this work, hot embossing is used in combination with a thermoplastic LCE for creating self‐healing and reprogrammable exotic surfaces capable of reversibly responding to environmental stimuli, significantly simplifying fabrication. It is demonstrated that hot embossing can be effectively applied to fabricate surfaces with arrays of pillars, cones, tubes, or mushroom shapes. The exotic surface structures exhibit reversible and programmable shape changes in response to heat and can be erased and rewritten to alternate complex topographies. As an additional feature, the LCE can be recycled and reused to create photo‐responsive surface topographies that can be spatiotemporally addressed by light. Light‐responsive LCE surfaces are prepared by incorporating a photothermal dye without loss of reconfigurability. The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well‐aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting‐edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra‐narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K−1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco‐friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. Hybrid Organic‐Inorganic Halide Perovskites (HOIHPs) represent an emerging class of semiconducting materials, widely employed in a variety of optoelectronic applications. Despite their skyrocket growth in the last decade, a detailed understanding on their structure–property relationships is still missing. In this communication, we report two unprecedented perovskite‐like materials based on polyfluorinated imidazolium cations. The two materials show thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior resulting in the emergence of stable mesophases. The manifold intermolecular F ⋅ ⋅ ⋅ F interactions are shown to be meaningful for the stabilization of both the solid‐ and liquid‐crystalline orders of these perovskite‐like materials. Moreover, the structure of the incorporated imidazolium cation was found to tune the properties of the liquid crystalline phase. Liquid crystalline (LC) materials are especially suited for the preparation of active three-dimensional (3D) and 4D microstructures using two-photon laser printing. To achieve the desired actuation, the alignment of the LCs has to be controlled during the printing process. In most cases studied before, the alignment relied on surface modifications and complex alignment patterns and concomitant actuation were not possible. Here, we introduce a strategy for spatially aligning LC domains in three-dimensional space by using 3D-printed polydimethylsiloxane-based microscaffolds as confinement barriers, which induce the desired director field. The director field resulting from the boundary conditions is calculated with Landau de Gennes theory and validated by comparing experimentally measured and theoretically predicted birefringence patterns. We demonstrate our procedures for structures of varying complexity and then employed them to fabricate 4D microstructures that show the desired actuation. This paper presents interactive liquid crystal fiber arrays that can actuate in a way perceptible by human touch. The fibers are actuated via a computer interface, enabling precise control over actuation direction, magnitude, and frequency. Unlike conventional methods, our technique initiates the actuation at the base of the fibers, which is enabled by fabricating the fibers directly onto an electrical circuit. Fiber actuation is achieved by localized addressing of an in situ formed radially aligned segment. This induces reduction in the scalar order parameter and leads to deformation of the fiber base, causing bending toward the activated region. Extensive modeling validates this actuation mechanism and identifies optimal conditions and actuation strategies for achieving the desired responses. The actuation process is rapid, is highly reversible, and maintains excellent performance over repeated (>200) cycles. These liquid crystal fiber arrays provide a safe contact with humans or other objects, making them highly suitable for applications in smart wearable devices and immersive interfaces. Constructing self‐adaptive oscillators that can continuously, stably, and tunably transform external stimulus into mechanical work is high demand for soft robots, energy harvesters and object conveyors. However, these systems are challenging to develop because of the single mesogenic anisotropy and simple material constituents obtained by a traditional technique. Here, a photoactivated self‐adaptive liquid crystal elastomer (LCE) oscillator with controlled nanoassembly‐directed hierarchically anisotropic structure is demonstrated by developing the highly‐aligned silver nanowire (AgNW) assemblies (HAs) to guide the orientation and polymerization of LC molecules. The fabricated HAs‐LCE film exhibits tunable multiple anisotropies on mesogenic alignment, composition, density gradient across the thickness and mechanical behaviors. Combined with excellent photo‐driven bending deformation, the HAs‐LCE cantilever performs a self‐sustained, periodic and steady oscillation self‐propelled by negative feedback loops under a continuous NIR laser. Impressively, triggered by synergetic deformations of anisotropically responsive architecture, self‐adaptive oscillations are first achieved with self‐tunable frequencies spanning from 4.1 to 13.2 Hz to accommodate variable light intensity, showing enormous and distinctive potentials for optical modulation. In this paper, phase transition temperatures of nematic liquid crystals: 4-n alkoxy benzoic acid (nOBA, where n = 4 and 6) are determined from the Legendre moments of liquid crystal textures. Here, the image analysis technique in conjunction with polarizing optical microscope is used to compute the Legendre moments from the textures of liquid crystals. As a function of temperature, Liquid crystal textures are recorded from the arthroscopic mode of optical microscope. Changes in textural features of the sample with respect to temperature bring the variations in intensity values of liquid crystal textures. The brightness image that is generated from the liquid crystal textural patterns separates the information about fluctuations in intensity. In this approach, Legendre moments are computed from the brightness images of the liquid crystal textures and are plotted as a function of temperature. Significant variations in the brightness Legendre moment curve provide insight into the liquid crystal transition temperatures. Results obtained from the present methodology are compared with gray color textures data and the experimental technique of differential scanning calorimetry and are in good agreement with each other. Organic optical waveguide materials have attracted considerable attention for their promising applications in photonic and optoelectronic devices. However, for most materials, excellent light‐loss properties at high temperature cannot be obtained due to many factors. Consequently, realizing efficient optical waveguide materials that perform well at elevated temperatures remains a significant challenge. In this study, relying on the luminescent properties and self‐assembly properties of luminescent liquid crystals (LLCs), successfully fabricated materials are present for highly efficient active optical waveguides. A systematically synthesized set of LLCs with different structures is named according to the substituent type and the position of the cyano group, namely α‐DECN, α‐DEEOCN, β‐DECN, and β‐DEEOCN. Notably, α‐DECN and β‐DECN reveal hexagonal columnar phase, while α‐DEEOCN and β‐DEEOCN exhibit smectic phase. Optical waveguide experiments have revealed that the obtained LLCs showed highly efficient optical waveguide behavior, where the lowest light loss reached 0.15 dB mm−1 at room temperature. Remarkably, these LLCs show even lower light loss at high temperatures, with the light loss reaching 0.11 dB mm−1 as the lowest point. Further experimental results indicate that this phenomenon is attributed to the change in the dipole moment of these molecules. Cyclotriphosphazene (CP) is a cyclic inorganic compound with the chemical formula N3P3. This unique molecule consists of a six‐membered ring composed of alternating nitrogen and phosphorus atoms, each bonded to two chlorine atoms. CP exhibits remarkable versatility and significance in the realm of materials chemistry due to its easy functionalization via facile nucleophilic substitution reactions in mild conditions as well as intriguing properties of resultant final CP‐based molecules or polymers. CP has been served as an important building block for numerous functional materials. This review provides a general and broad overview of the synthesis of CP‐based small molecules through nucleophilic substitution of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP), and their applications, including flame retardants, liquid crystals (LC), chemosensors, electronics, biomedical materials, and lubricants, have been summarized and discussed. It would be expected that this review would offer a timely summary of various CP‐based materials and hence give an insight into further exploration of CP‐based molecules in the future. Spiral phase contrast imaging alleviates the information load by extracting the geometric features of objects and is one of the most representative branches of instant imaging processing. The self-healing capacity of edge detectors can enhance their robustness to obstacles in practical applications. Here, a self-healing spiral phase contrast imaging scheme is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by a liquid crystal edge detector combining a spiral phase, an axicon phase, and a lens phase. The spiral phase is encoded into a liquid crystal by photopatterning. Self-healing contrast imaging is characterized by a series of edge images of both high-contrast amplitude-type and low-contrast phase-type objects. The fabrication of materials that can switch between circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) signals is both essential and challenging. Here, two new halogen‐bonded fluorescent molecular photoswitches, namely, HB‐switch 1 and HB‐switch 2, containing α‐cyano‐substituted diarylethene compounds with different end groups were developed. Upon exposure to specific UV or visible light wavelengths, they exhibited controllable and reversible Z/E photoisomerization. When these switches were integrated into blue‐phase liquid crystals (BPLCs), the temperature range of BP significantly expanded. Notably, the BP system incorporating HB‐switch 1 exclusively achieved reversible polarization inversion of CPL signals under irradiation with specific UV/Visible light and during cooling/heating. The photo/thermal dual‐response behavior of the CPL signals can be attributed to the phase transition from a high‐symmetry 3D BP Icubic lattice to a low‐symmetry 1D helical superstructure induced by the Z/E photoisomerization of HB‐switch 1 and temperature changes. This study underscores the significance of employing halogen‐bond assembly strategies to design materials with switchable CPL signals, opening new possibilities for CPL‐active systems. This review explores the integration of graphene and liquid crystals to advance sensor technologies across multiple domains, with a focus on recent developments in thermal and infrared sensing, flexible actuators, chemical and biological detection, and environmental monitoring systems. The synergy between graphene's exceptional electrical, optical, and thermal properties and the dynamic behavior of liquid crystals leads to sensors with significantly enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and versatility. Notable contributions of this review include highlighting key advancements such as graphene-doped liquid crystal IR detectors, shape-memory polymers for flexible actuators, and composite hydrogels for environmental pollutant detection. Additionally, this review addresses ongoing challenges in scalability and integration, providing insights into current research efforts aimed at overcoming these obstacles. The potential for multi-modal sensing, self-powered devices, and AI integration is discussed, suggesting a transformative impact of these composite sensors on various sectors, including health, environmental monitoring, and technology. This review demonstrates how the fusion of graphene and liquid crystals is pushing the boundaries of sensor technology, offering more sensitive, adaptable, and innovative solutions to global challenges. This work aims to determine how the nematic twist-bend phase (NTB) of bismesogens containing two rigid parts of cyanobiphenyls connected with a linking chain containing n = 7, 9, and 11 methylene groups behaves in mixtures with structurally similar cyanobiphenyls nCB, n = 4–12, 14. The whole phase diagrams are presented for the CB7CB-nCB system. For the other systems, CB9CB-nCB and CB11CB-nCB, only curves corresponding to NTB-N phase transition are presented. Based on the temperature-concentration range of the existence of NTB phase, it was established that an increase in the alkyl chain length of CBnCB causes an increase in the stability of the NTB phase. But surprisingly, an increase in the alkyl chain length of nCB compounds does not change the slope of the NTB-N equilibrium line on phase diagrams. It is slightly bigger when the nCB compound has the same length of alkyl chain as the length of the linking group of a bismesogen. XRD studies were carried out for two mixtures. Polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) have emerged as promising candidates for one-dimensional photonic lattices that enable precise tuning of the photonic band gap (PBG). This work systematically investigates the effect of polymer concentrations on the AC electric field-induced tuning of the PBG in PSCLCs, in so doing it explores a range of concentrations and provides new insights into how polymer concentration affects both the stabilization of cholesteric textures and the electro-optic response. We demonstrate that low polymer concentrations (≈3 wt. %) cause a blue shift in the short wavelength band edge, while high concentrations (≈10 wt. %) lead to a contraction and deterioration of the reflection band. Polarization optical microscopy was conducted to confirm the phase transition induced by the application of an electric field. The observations confirm that increased polymer concentration stabilizes the cholesteric texture. Particularly, the highly desired fingerprint texture was stabilized in a sample with 10 wt. % of the polymer, whereas it was unstable for lower polymer concentrations. Additionally, higher polymer concentrations also improved the dissymmetry factor and stability of the lasing emission, with the dissymmetry factor reaching the value of around 2 for samples with 10 wt. % of polymer additive. Our results provide valuable comprehension into the design of advanced PSCLC structures with tunable optical properties, enhancing device performance and paving the way for innovative photonic applications. Heat management and color appearance are the key issues for the application of smart windows. Herein, a vibrant colored energy-saving polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film has been designed by combining dye-doping and the application of a heat shielding electrode. The LC droplet size could be varied by tuning the content of the dye. PDLC films featuring a low Disperse Orange 25 Azo dye concentration (0.06%) achieving an impressive contrast ratio of up to 101.5 with the transmittance reaching 79.17% at on state. Furthermore, indium tin oxide (ITO) and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) were chosen as the conductive layer materials, and the heat shielding properties of ITO and AZO/Ag/ITO (AAI) films were applied to PDLC devices and comparatively investigated. The AAI-based devices exhibited temperature reductions of 2 °C and 4 °C compared to the ITO-based devices at off and on states, respectively. This highlights the remarkable heat shielding performance and energy-saving capability of AAI-PDLC devices, as well as good flexibility and cycle stability. We report on a set of experiments directed to a problem of microparticles interaction with a disclination in a nematic liquid crystal matrix. The idea of the study consists in the visualization of the disclination by filling it with particles efficiently scattering light. A θ-cell possessing a topological defect of undetermined twist which can capture micro-sized objects was exploited. The results obtained for samples of different shape can be used as for the understanding of the nature of self-assembling clusters, as for the practical goal of increasing the visibility of a disclination being a dynamic object sensitive to temperature and other external factors and able to move the trapped particles. We study the effective geometric motions of an anisotropic Ginzburg–Landau equation with a small parameter ε > 0 which characterizes the width of the transition layer. For well-prepared initial datum, we show that as ε tends to zero the solutions will develop a sharp interface limit which evolves under mean curvature flow. The bulk limits of the solutions correspond to a vector field u (x , t) which is of unit length on one side of the interface, and is zero on the other side. The proof combines the modulated energy method and weak convergence methods. In particular, by a (boundary) blow-up argument we show that u must be tangent to the sharp interface. Moreover, it solves a geometric evolution equation for the Oseen–Frank model in liquid crystals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A hyperelasticity modelling approach is employed for capturing various and complex mechanical behaviours exhibited by macroscopically isotropic polydomain liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs). These include the highly non-linear behaviour of nematic-genesis polydomain LCEs, and the soft elasticity plateau in isotropic-genesis polydomain LCEs, under finite multimodal deformations (uniaxial and pure shear) using in-house synthesised acrylate-based LCE samples. Examples of application to capturing continuous softening (i.e., in the primary loading path), discontinuous softening (i.e., in the unloading path) and auxetic behaviours are also demonstrated on using extant datasets. It is shown that our comparatively simple model, which breaks away from the neo-classical theory of liquid crystal elastomers, captures the foregoing behaviours favourably, simply as states of hyperelasticity. Improved modelling results obtained by our approach compared with the existing models are also discussed. Given the success of the considered model in application to these datasets and deformations, the simplicity of its functional form (and thereby its implementation), and comparatively low(er) number of parameters, the presented isotropic hyperelastic strain energy function here is suggested for: (i) modelling the general mechanical behaviour of LCEs, (ii) the backbone in the neo-classical theory, and/or (iii) the basic hyperelastic model in other frameworks where the incorporation of the director, anisotropy, viscoelasticity, temperature, softening etc parameters may be required. This paper discusses wave propagation in unbounded particle-based materials described by a second-gradient continuum model, recently introduced by the authors, to provide an identification technique. The term particle-based materials denotes materials modeled as assemblies of particles, disregarding typical granular material properties such as contact topology, granulometry, grain sizes, and shapes. This work introduces a center-symmetric second-gradient continuum resulting from pairwise interactions. The corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations (equilibrium equations) are derived using the least action principle. This approach unveils non-classical interactions within subdomains. A novel, symmetric, and positive-definite acoustic tensor is constructed, allowing for an exploration of wave propagation through perturbation techniques. The properties of this acoustic tensor enable the extension of an identification procedure from Cauchy (classical) elasticity to the proposed second-gradient continuum model. Circularly polarized luminesce (CPL) materials are crucial for various applications, including display devices and bionics. However, existing CPL materials face difficulties in simultaneously meeting large luminescence asymmetry factors (glum), high photoluminescence quantum yields (PQY), and long lifetime. Here, a simple strategy to prepare a series of high‐performance CPL liquid crystal copolymers is constructed by triplet–singlet Förster‐resonance energy transfer (TS‐FRET). A series of chiral liquid crystal copolymers are successfully synthesized by copolymerizing phosphorescent donor bearing chiral cholesterol mesogen with fluorescence acceptor bearing naphthalimide chromophore. The introduction of the naphthalimide component promotes the formation of twist grain boundary smectic‐A phase (TGBA*) and behaves distinctive selective reflective effect. An effective TS‐FRET process occurs in the two components of copolymers, and dual emission characteristics of thermally activated delayed fluorescence and room‐temperature phosphorescence are observed in the copolymer films. When the naphthalimide content of copolymer is 10%, the luminescence lifetime can achieve 83.0 ms. As the naphthalimide content increases, the glum initially increases and subsequently decreases, reaching a maximum of −1.15. In addition, the copolymer films possess enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield by TS‐FRET with a maximum value of 68%. The application of copolymers in information security is also explored. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are elastomeric networks with anisotropic monomers that reorient in response to applied loads, and in particular, thermomechanical loads. LCE complex microstructures translate into complex behaviors, such as soft elasticity, rate‐dependency, and hysteresis. In this work, we develop a three‐dimensional finite element implementation for monodomain LCEs, with the material modeled as a finite deformation viscoelastic network with a viscous director. The formulation is designed so that the director field can be modeled as an internal variable. Unique to this class of materials is that their deformation response function depends on the full deformation gradient and not just the right‐stretch tensor. This results in the material tangent losing its 'usual' symmetry properties. Accordingly, this makes the use of a first Piola–Kirchhoff finite element formulation advantageous. We utilize this framework to examine a number of nuances associated with the simulation and design of LCE based systems. In particular, we investigate in some detail the importance of a careful characterization of an LCE's initial director field. Via simulations of separate tension and compression experiments, we highlight the possibility of incorrect predictions when even small perturbations to initial conditions occur. The simulations are also used to illustrate the goodness of the model in replicating simple and complex experimental results, including the first‐of‐their‐kind buckling‐like column compression and thick‐walled balloon inflation simulations. Despite their essential role in the high‐latitude climate, the representation of mixed‐phase clouds is still a challenge for Global Climate Models (GCMs)'s cloud schemes. In this study we propose a methodology for robustly assessing Arctic mixed‐phase cloud properties in a climate model using airborne measurements. We leverage data collected during the RALI‐THINICE airborne campaign that took place near Svalbard in August 2022 to evaluate the simulation of mid‐level clouds associated with Arctic cyclones. Simulations are carried out with the new limited‐area configuration of the ICOLMDZ model which combines the recent icosahedral dynamical core DYNAMICO and the physics of LMDZ, the atmospheric component of the IPSL‐CM Earth System Model. Airborne radar and microphysical probes measurements are then used to evaluate the simulated clouds. A comparison method has been set‐up to guarantee as much as possible the spatiotemporal co‐location between observed and simulated cloud fields. We mostly focus on the representation of ice and liquid in‐cloud contents and on their vertical distribution. Results show that the model overestimates the amount of cloud condensates and exhibits a poor cloud phase spatial distribution, with too much liquid water far from cloud top and too much ice close to it. The downward gradual increase in snowfall flux is also not captured by the model. This in‐depth model evaluation thereby pinpoints priorities for further improvements in the ICOLMDZ cloud scheme. Plain Language Summary: Mixed‐phase clouds, where ice crystals and supercooled liquid droplets coexist at sub‐zero temperatures, are ubiquitous in the polar regions. Albeit essential for the high‐latitude climate, they are still poorly represented by climate models. In this study, original measurements from the RALI‐THINICE airborne campaign, which took place in the Svalbard region in August 2022, are used to assess how the ICOLMDZ atmospheric model represents Arctic mixed phase clouds. A methodology is developed to make robust and co‐located model‐aircraft observation comparisons. In situ cloud probes and onboard radars are then used to evaluate the simulated amounts of liquid water and ice in clouds as well as the snowfall flux in deep clouds associated with the transit of Arctic cyclones. The creation and modulation of chirality in nanomaterials is a well‐established and widely applied concept. Nevertheless, the direct approach of dynamically tuning their morphological asymmetry at the nanoscale to reveal their optical asymmetry variations is yet less well‐implemented. The helical templating of nanomaterials within a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) host and the exploitation of their optical asymmetry change in conjunction with the host represent a means of circumventing technological limitations. In this study, a blending approach is employed to investigate the helical assemblies of gold nanorods (Au NRs) within a photo‐tunable CLC host, followed by their morphological asymmetry modulation through the use of UV irradiation. The results demonstrated that the optical asymmetry of the Au NRs helical assemblies increased in response to a reduction in pitch and the distance between the Au NRs, regardless of the azimuthal variations. Furthermore, the Au NRs blended with CLCs exhibited excellent and stable reflective properties comparable to those of conventional CLCs. Additionally, they can modulate the light flux of incident light at NIR wavelengths. The integrated modulation of reflection and transmission by Au NRs helical assemblies and CLC hosts represents a promising avenue for future research in the field of multi‐level information encryption. Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) enable precise control over the direction and filtering of light, making them common components in spectrometers, waveguides, and sensors. There is great interest in tunable and sub‐micron diffractive optical elements in flexible photonics and for responsive structural colors. Here this study presents sub‐micron tunable diffraction gratings produced by patterning a liquid crystal elastomer (LCE). The intrinsic anisotropic deswelling of the liquid crystal elastomer enables sub‐micron (707 nm) pitch structures to be produced from a micron‐scale (1040 nm) surface relief grating. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and diffraction measurements, a thermal pitch tunability is demonstrated of +212 nm (+31%) or −322 nm (−33%) over a temperature range of 215 °C depending on grating orientation. A mechanical pitch tunability is demonstrate of +1110 nm by applying strains of up to 157% to the liquid crystal elastomer. The height of the diffraction grating is preserved over strain due to the negative Poisson‐ratio, or "auxetic", behavior exhibited by this chosen family of the liquid crystal elastomers. This report opens the possibility of using LCEs to facilitate flexible sub‐micron diffractive optical elements, with a high degree of tunability for sensing and structural color applications. Structural color coatings with brilliant color is important in practical applications, such as aesthetic decoration, bionic skins, colorimetric sensors, and other color‐related fields. However, the intrinsic conflict between fast self‐assembly and bright structural color hinders their widespread applications. Here, cholesteric liquid crystal elastomer (CLCE) coatings with brilliant color and mechanochromic response are developed by spraying the cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) paints followed by evaporation‐induced self‐assembly (EISA) and photocuring. The Marangoni flow within the paints, which drives the orientation of liquid crystal molecules along the flow track in the EISA process, is found to be crucial for achieving both rapid self‐assembly time (60 s) and high reflectivity structural color (42%). The as‐prepared CLCE coatings present uniform structural colors, circularly polarized reflection, and mechanochromic response. Several proof­of­concept applications are also demonstrated, including patterned CLCE coatings on flat substrates, fully covered CLCE coatings on 3D objects, and non‐spectral colors via additive mixing method. Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are promising candidates for creating adaptive textile‐based devices that can actively and reversibly respond to the environment for sensing and communication. Despite recent advances in scalable manufacturing of LCE filaments for textile engineering, the actuation modes of various LCE filaments focus on contractual deformations. In this study, manufacture of polydomain LCE filaments with potential scalability by wet‐spinning is studied, followed by mechanical exploitation to program liquid crystal mesogen alignments, demonstrating both contractual and twisting actuation profiles. By plying these LCE filaments into yarns with different twist concentrations, yarn actuation, and mechanical performance is tuned. Yarns plied at 4 twists per cm can generate up to a seven‐fold increase in elastic modulus while maintaining 90% of actuation strain performance from their native filament. The contractual and twisting LCE filaments are then embroidered with varying stitch types to spatially program complex 2D‐to‐3D transformations in "inactive" fabrics. It is shown that a running stitch can actuate up to 15% in strain and create angular displacements in fabric with twisted mesogen alignments. It is envisioned that the wet‐spun polydomain LCE filaments for diverse plied yarn production together with textile engineering will open new opportunities to design smart textiles and soft robotics. Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) beams with a spiral phase (optical vortex), which feature orbital angular momenta, and vector beams (VBs) with an axially symmetric spatial polarization distribution exhibit properties different from those of conventional Gaussian beam. In this article, we introduce LG beams and VBs. Next, we explain the generation of LG beams and VBs using liquid-crystal devices. Subsequently, we report the super-resolution observation of biological samples and our observation of a PNLC (Polymer network liquid crystal) network structure using a laser scanning microscope, which comprises a liquid crystal LG-VB generator. Viscosity, elasticity, and viscoelastic properties are one of the most fundamental properties of liquid crystalline materials; the main problem in determining these properties is the multitude of physical parameters needed to determine the values of elasticity and viscosity constants. In this paper, a number of different measurement methods for the complete characterization of viscoelastic properties for smectic liquid crystalline materials and their mixtures are analyzed, both theoretically and experimentally. The way in which viscoelastic material constants are determined depends mainly on the application/purpose of the materials under study. The subject of this work was to review the methods used to determine viscoelastic effects in ferroelectric and antiferroelectric chiral liquid crystals, their mixtures, composite materials, and even in dielectric systems, which would bear the hallmark of a universal method allowing the application of sufficiently low electric fields. In the case of chiral liquid crystals with ferroelectric and antiferroelectric phases and their subphases, the following assumption applies: fulfilment of Hooke's law (in the case of elastic coefficients) and preservation of laminar flow (in the case of viscosity coefficients).
