Water fountains (WFs) are thought to represent an early stage in the morphological evolution of circumstellar envelopes surrounding low- and intermediate-mass evolved stars. These objects are considered to transition from spherical to asymmetric shapes. Despite their potential importance in this transformation process of evolved stars, there are only a few known examples. To identify new WF candidates, we used databases of circumstellar OH (1612 MHz) and H2O (22.235 GHz) maser sources, and compared the velocity ranges of the two maser lines. Finally, 41 sources were found to have a velocity range for the H2O maser line that exceeded that of the OH maser line. Excluding known planetary nebulae and after reviewing the maser spectra in the original literature, we found for 11 sources the exceedance as significant, qualifying them as new WF candidates. To identify selection criteria linked to outcomes in patients treated with stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for metastatic tumors of the urinary tract (UT). Single institution retrospective analysis of SBRT treated patients for oligometastatic/progressive UT tumors from 2006-2022. Charts were queried for M1 status at diagnosis or during disease course, treatment details (surgery, SBRT, systemic therapy), metabolic status (diabetes [DM], BMI) and outcomes. A linear quadratic formula was used to calculate the biologically effective dose (BED) using an α/β of 10 for tumor. Descriptive statistics portrayed the cohort, and analyses were done at patient and site level. Time-to-event analyses, including overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) from SBRT, were assessed by the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox regression was used for univariable (UVA) and multivariable analyses (MVA) to identify predictors of outcomes. A total of 35 patients were treated at 44 metastatic sites, including: bone (25%), node (36.4%), lung (20.5%), soft tissue (13.6%) and liver (4.5%). Most were male (74.3%) with a median age of 70 (range: 51-89), without DM (60%) having a median BMI of 29.8, and ECOG <2 (97.1%) at time of SBRT. Six (17.1%) patients were M1 at diagnosis. Of the 29 non-M1 patients, 86.2% received definitive local therapy (LT), 58.6% had at least T3/N+ disease, 75.8% received systemic therapy with a median of 2 agents (range: 1-6) prior to SBRT. Sixteen (45.7%) received immunotherapy (IO) with most receiving this before (75%) and after (56.2%) SBRT. Six patients had positive PD-L1 status (n = 10). The median RT dose, fractionation and BED was 40 Gy (range: 14-46), 5 fractions, and 72 (range: 28-132), respectively. At a median follow-up of 34.8, the median OS was 18.4 m (range: 9.3-27.4) with a 2-year OS of 35.9%. At patient level, 62.8% recurred after SBRT. The median PFS after SBRT was 5.3 m (range: 1.8-8.7) with a 2-yr PFS of 29.3%. Patient-level PFS was improved with LT (6.7 vs 1.4 m; p = 0.001) and DM (NR vs 2.9 m; p = 0.015), whereas improved OS was related with LT (18.9 vs 6.6 m; p = 0.03), DM (p = 0.04), ECOG (p = 0.004), and no relapse after SBRT (NR vs 9.8 m; p <0.001). Exposure to < 3 systemic agents prior to SBRT portended better PFS (6.7 vs 2.6 m; p = 0.04) without any impact by IO. At site level, 20.4% of sites had local relapse with 4 being the first event. Site was related with PFS (p = 0.009) with order of increased relapse risk being liver > bone > soft tissue > node > lung. No dosimetric feature was related with recurrence risk. On MVA, both DM (p = 0.02) and LT (p = 0.002) were predictive for PFS. Only recurrence after SBRT predicted for OS on MVA (HR: 6.7, 95% CI: 1.4-31; p = 0.014). In the IO subset, median PFS was 5.3 m and OS was 9.4 m, with no difference seen with IO-SBRT sequence or PDL1 status. Optimized selection criteria for metastasis-directed therapy in patients with UT tumors is unclear, notably with IO. Future studies may benefit by assessing circulating tumor markers prior to SBRT. Am J Physiol Lung Cell Mol Physiol 280: L458-L464, 2001.--Pulmonary arteries from the Madison (M) strain relax more in response to acetylcholine (ACh) than those from the Hilltop (H) strain of Sprague-Dawley rats. We hypothesized that differences in endothelial nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) expression and function, metabolism of ACh by cholinesterases, release of prostacyclin, or endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor(s) (EDHF) from the endothelium would explain the differences in the relaxation response to ACh in isolated pulmonary arteries, eNOS mRNA and protein levels as well as the NO-dependent relaxation responses to thapsigargin in phenylephrine ([10.sup.-6] M)-precontracted pulmonary arteries from the M and H strains were identical. The greater relaxation response to ACh in M compared with H rats was also observed with carbachol, a cholinesterase-resistant analog of ACh, a response that was not modified by pretreatment with meclofenamate ([10.sup.-5] M). [N.sup.[Omega]-nitro-L-arginine ([10.sup.-4] M) completely abolished carbachol-induced relaxation in H rat pulmonary arteries but not in M rat pulmonary arteries. Precontraction with KC1 (20 mM) blunted the relaxation response to carbachol in M rat pulmonary arteries and eliminated differences between the M and H rat pulmonary arteries. NO-independent relaxation present in the M rat pulmonary arteries was significantly reduced by 17-octadecynoic acid (2 [micro]M) and was completely abolished by charybdotoxin plus apamin (100 nM each). These findings suggest that EDHF, but not NO, contributes to the strain-related differences in pulmonary artery reactivity. Background: Inducible activation of nuclear factor (NF)-κB is one of the principal mechanisms through which resistant prostate cancer cells are protected from radiotherapy. We hypothesised that inactivation of inducible NF-κB with a novel NF-κB inhibitor, DHMEQ, would increase the therapeutic effects of radiotherapy.Methods: PC-3 and LNCaP cells were exposed to irradiation and/or DHMEQ. Cell viability, cell cycle analysis, western blotting assay, and NF-κB activity were measured. The antitumour effect of irradiation combined with DHMEQ in vivo was also assessed.Results: The combination of DHMEQ with irradiation resulted in cell growth inhibition and G2/M arrest relative to treatment with irradiation alone. Inducible NF-κB activity by irradiation was inhibited by DHMEQ treatment. The expression of p53 and p21 in LNCaP, and of 14-3-3σ in PC-3 cells, was increased in the combination treatment. In the in vivo study, 64 days after the start of treatment, tumour size was 85.1%, 77.1%, and 64.7% smaller in the combination treatment group than that of the untreated control, DHMEQ-treated alone, and irradiation alone groups, respectively.Conclusion: Blockade of NF-κB activity induced by radiation with DHMEQ could overcome radio-resistant responses and may become a new therapeutic modality for treating prostate cancer. Before plants can be effectively utilised as a component of enclosed life-support systems for space exploration, it is important to understand the molecular mechanisms by which they develop in microgravity. Using the Biological Research in Canisters ( BRIC) hardware on board the second to the last flight of the Space Shuttle Discovery ( STS-131 mission), we studied how microgravity impacts root growth in Arabidopsis thaliana. Ground-based studies showed that the actin cytoskeleton negatively regulates root gravity responses on Earth, leading us to hypothesise that actin might also be an important modulator of root growth behaviour in space. We investigated how microgravity impacted root growth of wild type (ecotype Columbia) and a mutant ( act2-3) disrupted in a root-expressed vegetative actin isoform ( ACTIN2). Roots of etiolated wild-type and act2-3 seedlings grown in space skewed vigorously toward the left, which was unexpected given the reduced directional cue provided by gravity. The left-handed directional root growth in space was more pronounced in act2-3 mutants than wild type. To quantify differences in root orientation of these two genotypes in space, we developed an algorithm where single root images were converted into binary images using computational edge detection methods. Binary images were processed with Fast Fourier Transformation ( FFT), and histogram and entropy were used to determine spectral distribution, such that high entropy values corresponded to roots that deviated more strongly from linear orientation whereas low entropy values represented straight roots. We found that act2-3 roots had a statistically stronger skewing/coiling response than wild-type roots, but such differences were not apparent on Earth. Ultrastructural studies revealed that newly developed cell walls of space-grown act2-3 roots were more severely disrupted compared to space-grown wild type, and ground control wild-type and act2-3 roots. Collectively, our results provide evidence that, like root gravity responses on Earth, endogenous directional growth patterns of roots in microgravity are suppressed by the actin cytoskeleton. Background:An increased body mass index (BMI) is significantly associated with favourable prognosis in renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This study investigated the associations among sex, BMI, and prognosis in clear cell RCC patients.Methods:We retrospectively analysed 435 patients with clear cell RCC who underwent a nephrectomy. The associations among sex, BMI, clinicopathologic factors, and cancer-specific survival (CSS) were analysed.Results:As a continuous variable, increased BMI was associated with higher CSS rate by univariate analysis in the whole population (hazard ratio, 0.888 per kg m-2; 95% confidence interval, 0.803-0.982; P=0.021). A sub-population analysis by sex demonstrated that BMI was significantly associated with CSS in men (P=0.004) but not in women (P=0.725). Multivariate analysis revealed BMI to be an independent predictor of CSS in only men.Conclusion:Body mass index was significantly associated with clear cell RCC prognosis. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine attenuation values in the central vein and perivenous artefacts at the subclavian vein in cervical CT angiography (CTA) when using 40ml contrast material (CM) followed by different volumes (25ml vs 40 ml) of saline flush (SF). Methods: 61 patients underwent CTA between the aortic arch (AA) and distal to the circle of Willis (cW). After calculating test-bolus time to peak enhancement at the cW (Tc), scanning delay was represented as [(Tc + 4) - scan duration between AA and cW] s. 28 patients (Group A) received 40 ml of 370mg iodine (I) ml-1 CM followed by 25 ml of SF, and 33 patients (Group B) received the same CM followed by 40 ml of SF, both administered through the right antecubital vein. Arterial attenuation was measured at seven points in the aorto-carotid artery and at three points in the vertebrobasilar artery. Venous attenuation in the central vein was measured at four points. Mean attenuation values were analysed quantitatively. Axial and post-processing threedimensional images were assessed qualitatively. Results: When Groups A and B were compared, there were no differences in the mean attenuation values in either the aorto-carotid artery (p=0.78) or the vertebrobasilar artery (p=0.82). Mean venous attenuation values were lower (p=0.002) in Group B than in Group A. Although the qualitative assessment of arterial images showed no differences between the two groups overall, perivenous artefacts at the subclavian vein were assessed as less prominent (p<0.01) in Group B. Conclusions: When compared with CTA followed by 25 ml of SF, CTA followed by 40 ml of SF can reduce venous attenuation values and perivenous artefacts at the subclavian vein. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Between 1992 and 2003, services for homeless veterans at the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System went from inappropriate utilization of hospital medical and psychiatric beds, to a continuum of residential treatment, transitional housing, and employment programs through arrangements with private agencies. The authors use elements of Hasenfeld and Brock's Political Economy Model (1991) to explain this transformation in service delivery that was spearheaded by a VA social work leadership team. It is argued that three driving forces crucial to program implementation were present: technological certainty, economic stability, and concentration of power. Evidence of the implementation's impact includes creation of new homeless program beds, a reduction in use of medical/psychiatric beds, and a large number of formerly homeless veterans with housing and employment at program discharge. A mathematical model simulating the coagulation and flotation of non-metallic inclusions in the tundish and continuous casting mould was developed based on turbulence coagulation and Stokes coagulation. From the simulation in the tundish, it was found that Stokes coagulation is dominant in the tundish. In the mould, the simulation result was that argon bubbles become the desirable sites where alumina inclusions are gathered and form large alumina clusters. The influence of the liquid steel flow in the mould applied by an in-mould electromagnetic stirring technique on the trapping rate of non-metallic inclusions into the solidified shell was examined. The horizontal flow in front of the shell was found to be effective for disturbing the trapping and decreasing the population of large non-metallic inclusions in the shallow surface layer of cast slabs. There is scant research on alcohol and other drug use among Asians and Pacific Islanders living in the United States. In particular, there are no studies on alcohol consumption patterns among Korean American adolescents. This study provides new information on alcohol use for a population that has not been extensively studied. Descriptive analyses reveal that alcohol misuse does occur among Korean American adolescents. Results from logistic regression indicate that alcohol misuse among Korean American adolescents is influenced by the social variables found to affect use among other ethnic groups. For Whites, psychological variables (depression, self-esteem), perceived prejudice, and feeling safe where one lives explained variance beyond social influences. These findings support the contention that there are similarities in the social milieu of alcohol use among all adolescents in the United States. However, our data indicate that psychological forces provide additional influences on White alcohol misuse. Implications of our findings are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The physiological basis underlying the decline in the incidence of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) associated with changing the sleep position from prone to supine remains unknown.Aims: To evaluate diaphragm thickness (t(di)) and shortening in healthy term infants in the prone and supine positions in order to determine whether changes in body position would affect diaphragm resting length and the degree of diaphragm shortening during inspiration.Methods: In 16 healthy term infants, diaphragm thickness at the level of the zone of apposition on the right side was measured using ultrasonography. Heart rate (HR), breathing frequency (f), and transcutaneous oxyhaemoglobin saturation (SaO(2)) were recorded simultaneously during diaphragm imaging with the infants in the supine and prone positions during quiet sleep.Results: At end expiratory (EEV) and at end inspiratory lung volumes (EIV), t(di) increased significantly in the prone position. The change in t(di) during tidal breathing was also greater when the infant was prone. SaO(2), HR, and f were not significantly different at EEV and at EIV in both positions.Conclusion: In healthy term infants, placed in the prone position, the diaphragm is significantly thicker and, therefore, shorter, both at EEV and EIV. Diaphragm shortening during tidal breathing is greater when the infant is prone. In the prone position, the decreased diaphragm resting length would impair diaphragm strength, and the additional diaphragm shortening during tidal breathing represents added work performed by the diaphragm. This may compromise an infant's capacity to respond to stressful situations when placed in the prone position and may contribute to the association of SIDS with prone position. Social workers find themselves caught in the cross fire between two imperatives: (1) outcome-oriented and competency-based practice requisites and (2) the principle of client self-determination. In this context, the authors hypothesize that social workers use a wide range of gradations along a continuum of practice directiveness. Furthermore, there is ethical justification for this diverse role repertoire. Directiveness modalities are influenced by specific conditional factors that guide practitioner behavior. Isolated mesophyll cells of Zinnia elegans L. cv. Canary Bird differentiate into tracheary elements in differentiation (D) medium. These elements develop lignified secondary wall thickenings. The influence of 2-aminoindan-2-phosphonic acid (AIP), an inhibitor of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), on lignification of Zinnia tracheary elements was examined. The mesophyll cells were cultured in D and AIP media. The latter medium, in which 100 μM AIP was added to the D medium, inhibited PAL activity, though the differentiation proceeded. Morphological differences of secondary wall thickenings cultured in these two types of media were investigated under an UV microscope and a transmission electron microscope. The secondary wall thickenings at 96 h in the D medium showed strong UV absorption. The fibrillar structure of the thickenings observed clearly at 72 h was covered with electron opaque materials by 96 h. The secondary wall thickenings at 96 h in the AIP medium showed weak UV absorption. The thickenings at 96 h had a cracked appearance. Furthermore, the thickenings showed a little irregular or wavy arrangement of cellulose microfibrils and had many pores and spaces between microfibrils. We introduce the newly developed database of circumstellar maser sources. Until now, the compilations comprehensively including the three major maser species in evolved stars (i.e., SiO, H2O, OH) has been practically limited only to the Benson's catalog (Benson et al. 1990), which was published more than a quarter of a century ago. For OH masers alone, there exists the University of Hamburg (UH) database, but there is no updated compilation work for H2O and SiO masers. In order to utilize the information of masers in actual studies, it is highly desirable to have a database containing all the three masers. We are currently constructing a database covering SiO, H2O and OH masers. This database consists of a web-service, which accesses compiled maser observations in available archives and combines them with the data we newly collected and IR databases. The archives currently used are the OH maser archive from Engels & Bunzel (2015), and H2O and SiO archives, which are currently under construction. So far, the information of about 27,000 observations (about 10,000 objects) has been implemented. We also have a plan to extend the database by including higher transitions and other types of objects, such as young stellar objects, in future. Water maser emission has been detected only toward three planetary nebulae (PNe). In particular, in K3-35, the first PN where water vapor maser emission was detected, the components are located in a torus-like structure with a radius of 85 AU and also at the surprisingly large distance of 5000 AU from the star, in the tips of the bipolar lobes. The existence of these water molecules in PNe is puzzling, probably related to some unknown mechanism shielding them against the ionizing radiation. We report the detection of HCO+ (J = 1 − 0) emission toward K 3-35, that not only suggests that dense molecular gas (~105 cm−3) is present in this PN, but also that this kind of PN can enrich their surroundings with organic molecules. IRAS 19312+1950 is a unique SiO maser source, exhibiting a rich set of molecular radio lines, although SiO maser sources are usually identified as oxygen-rich evolved stars, in which chemistry is relatively simple comparing with carbon-rich environments. The rich chemistry of IRAS 19312+1950 has raised a problem in circumstellar chemistry if this object is really an oxygen-rich evolved star, but its evolutional status is still controversial. In this paper, we briefly review the previous observations of IRAS 19312+1950, as well as presenting preliminary results of recent VLBI observations in maser lines. Client engagement in drug abuse treatment is associated with favorable treatment outcomes, but it is not completely understood why some clients are more likely to engage in treatment. This study examines a wide array of client characteristics and treatment experiences potentially associated with engagement. Findings from the Los Angeles Target Cities Project, funded by the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, indicate that the predictors of treatment engagement are generally confined to current treatment experiences. For both women and men, the perceived utility of treatment, ancillary services, and the client-counselor relationship are the strongest predictors of client engagement in treatment. Client characteristics are generally not strong predictors of treatment engagement. Concerning the client-counselor relationship, the findings suggest that women may respond more favorably to an empathic counseling style, whereas men may respond to a more utilitarian style. The findings contradict popular stereotypes about the treatment-"receptive" client, identify possible directions for treatment improvement, and highlight the need for more research examining the treatment experience of the client.
