This study aimed to examine the effects of a visual praxis‐based occupational therapy (VPOT) program on reading and motor skills for children with developmental dyslexia (DD). Forty‐two children were included in the study. Additionally, before VPOT, the Reading‐Aloud and Reading‐Comprehension Test 2 (ORSRC‐2) and the Bruininks‐Oseretsky Motor‐Proficiency‐Test‐2‐Brief Form (BOT2‐BF) were applied to the participants. According to the study design, VPOT was applied to two sessions per week for 8 weeks to group A. During this period, group B was accepted as the control group. At the end of these 8 weeks, evaluation tests were applied to both groups. Then, group A was defined as the control group and Group B as the intervention group, and VPOT was applied to Group B. At the end of another 8 weeks, evaluation tests were applied to both groups for the third time. When the final ORSRC‐2 results were examined, VPOT was found to be an effective program for improving reading skills. Additionally, when the final BOT2‐BF results were examined, VPOT was determined to be effective in improving motor skills (p < 0.05). CLOSER is a computer-based exercise program that aims to improve older adults' health, fitness and social lives. This pilot study aimed to examine the effect of CLOSER, the first computer-based exercise program developed for older adults on a national scale, on those with a history of falls. Forty-eight older adults (71.33 ± 7.47) with a history of falling at least once in the last year were included in the study. Older adults performed CLOSER exercises for (balance maintenance, neck rotation, rhythmic walking, knee flexion and trunk rotation) 2 sessions per week for eight weeks. All individuals were evaluated at baseline and the end of the eighth week. The primary outcome measures were the 30-s Chair-Stand Test (p = 0.002), the Berg Balance Scale (p = 0.002), the Falls Efficacy Scale International (p = 0.003), the Timed Up and Go Test (p = 0.008) and the motivation level (p = 0.007) statistically significant improvements were observed. The results show that a CLOSER-computer-based exercise program effectively increases balance and reduces the risk and fear of falling. In the future, CLOSER could significantly contribute to the healthcare system as an alternative aid for home-based exercise. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study is to investigate the environmental factors such as supports and barriers that have been faced by those children with SLD between the before and after COVID-19 lockdown and their involvement, participation frequency and desire for change. The participation features as well as the environmental factors at home, school and community settings of these children (n: 61; mean age: 9.37 ± 1.50 year)during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown were assessed by using the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY) instrument via Internet access. The differences in participation frequency, involvement, desire for change, and environmental factors (supports and barriers) for school and community settings between the pre and post COVID-19 pandemic lockdown were found to be p < 0.01. There were no statistical differences at home settings in terms of participation frequency and supports (p > 0.05). This study provides information about the participation levels of children with special needs during the COVID-19 pandemic and the environmental factors faced by these children. The results are expected to contribute to the rehabilitation program that may improve the participation levels of children with special needs, and determine where greater efforts are needed to support so as to raise their participation levels and improve environmental features after the quarantine process. Introduction: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects children's occupational performance and participation. It is known that the Covid pandemic has adversely affected the whole world in many areas. We aim to investigate the occupational performance and participation of children with DCD before and during the COVID‐19. Methods: Sixty‐five children aged 5–12 years included in the study were assessed by the Canadian Measure of Occupational Performance and the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth. Results: Statistically significant differences were detected in occupational performance and satisfaction scores (p < 0.01). Additionally, except for 'involvement in the home environment' (p > 0.05), there were statistically significant differences in all other areas of participation (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The occupational performance and participation of children with DCD are impacted during COVID‐19. In addition, it is seen that the desire of families to change regarding participation has increased due to COVID‐19. Background: Neurocognitive sequelae are among the most debilitating effects of cancer observed in children. Yet we know very little about the impact on neurocognitive functioning, especially cancer types that develop outside the central nervous system. This study aimed to assess and compare the cognitive functions (CoF) of children with bone tumours and lymphoma in the treatment process. Methods: The CoF of children with bone tumours (n = 44), lymphoma (n = 42) and their non‐cancer peers (n = 55) were assessed with Dynamic Occupational Therapy Assessment for Children. The CoF of children with cancer were compared with their non‐cancer peers. Then, children with bone tumours and lymphoma were compared in binary. Results: One‐hundred forty‐one children aged 6–12 years with a mean age of 9.4 (SD = 1.5) were included in this study. The orientation and visuomotor construction functions of children with bone tumours and orientation, praxis and visuomotor construction functions of children with lymphoma performed worse than their non‐cancer peers (pk < 0.001). While orientation, spatial perception, visuomotor construction and thinking operations functions of children with bone tumours and lymphoma were similar (pk > 0.016), praxis functions of children with lymphoma were found to be worse than children with bone tumours (pk < 0.016). Conclusions: Our findings show that children with bone tumours and lymphoma in the process of treatment are at risk for impairment of their CoF. The findings highlight the importance of assessing CoF in children with bone tumours and lymphoma and considering specific differences between groups. Background: Participation was shown to be associative with subjective health (SH) in many different populations, including emerging adults. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate SH and associative variables in emerging adults with different levels of participation limitations. Methods: Healthy university students who were between 18–25 years of age were included. SH was assessed with the visual analog scale. The participants were grouped based on P-Scale. Multiple linear regressions were conducted to determine the associative variables of SH for each P-Scale group. Results: A total of 572 participants were included. General health-related quality of life was associated with SH in all P-Scale groups. Other prominent findings of this study showed perception of health, income, and lifestyle were among the most significant associative variables of SH. Conclusion: Variables associated with emerging adults' SH change with their participation restrictions. Therefore, different approaches are needed to improve the subjectively perceived health status of emerging adults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized with problems such as; atypical attention skills increased impulsive behaviors at least two of the child's areas of daily living. In studies investigating developmental aspect of the said problems of children with ADHD, it was stated that the children usually do not demonstrate normal development regarding the motor proficiency and may fall behind their peers in exhibiting normal motor performance. These problems in motor skills are said to cause a hindered development in complex skills which may result in; distorted body image, increased anxiety and poor social communication skills. This study's aim was to investigate effects of a Visual-Praxis-based Occupational Therapy program (VPOT) on motor proficiency of children with ADHD. The 58 children who were included to the study were assigned numbers from 1 to 58 and randomized into two groups (the intervention group and the control group). Both groups were subjected to the Bruninks-Oserestry Test of Motor Proficiency 2-Brief Form (BOT2-BF). After the initial assessment, the participants in the intervention group were admitted into the VPOT program for a duration of 8 weeks with twice-weekly sessions of 45 minutes. End of the program, BOT2-BF was applied once more. The participants mean age was 8.44±1.39 years. There were no differences between the intervention and the control group in terms of age. When the BOT2-BF results for the intervention group were analyzed, it was found that there were significant differences between pre- and post-intervention scores of all sub-scores and the total score. Due to approaching the motor development aspect of ADHD within the context of motor proficiency and visual perception, this study can be considered to be one of the innovative and pioneer studies in the field and is positively unique regarding the usage of the intervention approach that was used. Introduction: Sensory processing is crucial to adaptive behavioural responses in occupational therapy. Nevertheless, information on sensory processing in adults is limited. The Adult Sensory Processing Scale (ASPS) measures behavioural responses indicative of sensory processing in different sensory systems. The study aimed to examine the cultural adaptation, reliability and validity of the ASPS-Turkish (ASPS-T). Methods: The ASPS-T was administered to 405 individuals, who were aged 18 to 64 (38.5 ± 11.4) years. The cross-cultural adaptation and translation procedures were conducted following Beaton's guidelines. Internal consistency was examined by Cronbach's alpha. Criterion-related validity of the ASPS was determined by the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile using Construct validity and was examined by confirmatory factor analysis using AMOS. Results: The study included 405 participants (271 female and 134 male). Exploratory factor analysis with varimax rotation determined 11 factors with 55.15% total variance. In confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), model fit indices showed an acceptable fit. The reliability of the scale was 0.834, and test–retest reliability changed from 0.94 to 0.99, illustrating high internal consistency and excellent reliability of the scale. Objective: In this descriptive study, we aimed to evaluate features of dermatology referrals before and after Covid-19 pandemic. Materials and Methods: The patients referred to dermatology outpatient clinics of Acıbadem Group Hospitals in Istanbul between the time intervals 2019 March 1st and August 31st (Group G1) and 2020 March 1st and August 31st (Group G2) were included in this study. G1 and G2 groups were compared in terms of age, gender, mean duration of complaints, the most common five anatomic regions and the most common five dermatoses. Results: Referral rate after Covid-19 pandemic was decreased by 40%. Face (p=.0013, OR= 1.20, 95% CI=1.07-1.34), scalp (p=.02, OR=1.23, 95% CI=1.02-1.48) and hand (p=.04, 95% OR=1.24, 95% CI=1.00-1.54) were more common locations in 2020 (group G2) than in 2019 (G2 group). The most common five dermatoses were contact dermatitis (8.3%), acne (8,1%), wart (7,0%), seborrheic dermatitis (5,7%) and pyoderma (5,5%) in G1 (2019), while the order was contact dermatitis (10,6%), acne (7,5%), seborrheic dermatitis (6,5%), wart (6,4%) and pyoderma (4,9%) in G2 (2020). Contact dermatitis showed a significant increase after pandemic (p=.0017, OR=1.29, 95% CI=1.10-1.51). In 2020, psoriasis and lichen planus showed a two-fold increases (P<.001, OR=2.00, 95% CI=1.43-2.79 and p=.03, OR=1.92, 95% CI=1.09-3.38, respectively), whereas frequency of molluscum contagiosum decreased significantly (p=.03, OR=0.49, 95% CI=0.26-0.92). Conclusion: Although we found some remarkable results, relatively short-term period design with the limited patient population of this study needs to be verified in more comprehensive studies. Objective: In this study, it was planned to examine fatigue, wellbeing and life habits in children with cancer. Methods: This cross-sectional analytical study was conducted between September 2019-January 2020. "24-Hour Child Fatigue Scale", "Child Well-being Assessment" and Child Life Habit Questionnaire (LIFE-H for Children 1.0)" were administered to 20 children with cancer aged 5-15 years. Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to determine the statistical relationship between life habits, fatigue and well-being. Statistical significance level was accepted as p<0.05. Results: There were significant relationships between fatigue and personal care, shelter and mobility parameters of life habits (r=-0.66, r=0.54, r=0.45, p<0.01, respectively) and there were significant relationships between fatigue and negative emotions (r=0.46), overall life satisfaction (r=-0.52), general happiness (r=- 0.49) and positive emotions (r=-0.44 *) parameters of well-being assessment. Life habits scale was found to be related with nutrition, physical fitness and communication parameters of Child Life Habit Questionnaire were found to be most related with the meaning and purpose parameter of the well-being assessment (p<0.01). There were significant relationships between positive emotions and recreation (r=0.45, p=0.04); optimism and communication (r=-0.44, p=0.04); personal care (r=-0.49, p=0, 02), social life (r=-0.46, p=0.04) and autonomy; and mobility and negative emotions (r=-0.45, p=0.04). Conclusion: Considering the relationships determined in this study, the evaluation of the children with cancer and treatment approaches can be shaped. The fact that fatigue affects all aspects of children's life reveals the importance of dealing with fatigue. It is recommended to focus on the meaning and purpose and regain autonomy for children in order to rearrange the life habits of the children and ensure their well-being. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background. Little is known about the relationship between sensory processing and motor development in very preterm infants. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship of motor development with sensory processing among such infants with developmental delay and those who had typical development at the ages of 8 and 12 months. Methods. This prospective case-control study included 61 preterm infants (31 males, 30 females, mean gestational age: 29.1 weeks). The infants had a gestational age of 32 weeks or less and a current corrected age of 8 months, and they had spent at least 15 days in the neonatal intensive care unit. Motor development was assessed with the Neuro-sensory Motor Developmental Assessment (NSMDA), and sensory processing was evaluated with the Test of Sensory Functions in Infants (TSFI). Results. There were very strong positive correlations between the gross and fine motor scores of the NSMDA and the TSFI's subdomain scores and total scores (r=0.85-0.93, p<0.001). There were also very strong negative correlations between the functional level according to the NSMDA and the subdomain scores and total scores of the TSFI (r=-0.89-0.94, p<0.001). Conclusions. The results show that sensory processing and motor development are related parts of the development of very preterm infants. Cutaneous metastasis of gastric cancer is extremely rare. Nodular forms are more common and inflammatory forms are exceptionally encountered. Herein, we report a case of inflammatory cutaneous metastasis of signet‐ring cell gastric cancer (poorly cohesive gastric carcinoma with signet‐ring cell component) masquerading as livedo reticularis. To our knowledge, such a clinical presentation of cutaneous metastasis has not been reported for gastric cancer. It is imperative to preserve a high index of clinical suspicion for diagnosing cutaneous metastases. Our case highlights the importance of obtaining a skin biopsy in patients with a known history of internal malignancy. Bizarre, newly erupting, evolving, persistent, or treatment‐refractory dermatologic lesions (such as nodules, ulcers, erythematous, reticular, or livedoid patches) might be clues for an underlying internal malignancy and require prompt histopathological sampling. Personal medical history, histopathological examination, and immunohistochemical profiling are equally important in distinguishing primary cutaneous carcinomas from secondary metastatic deposits. Early recognition of a cutaneous metastasis might enable appropriate staging and timely intervention, thereby prolonging survival. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Specialists often assess the motor proficiency of children presented with suspected developmental delays. It is essential that the tools used to assess children have highly powerful measurement properties including psychometric properties. The aim of our study, analyze the reliability and construct validity of the Turkish version of the Bruininks Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency 2-Brief Form (BOT2-BF) in children with a specific learning disability (SLD). Methods: Participants, which aged between 6 and 14, were included 137 children with SLD and 50 children without any diagnosis. The Turkish version of the BOT2-BF was administered by the researcher in one session to children with SLD twice with a seven days interval. In addition, BOT2-BF was re-apply to 25 children with SLD, which were randomly selected, after 10 days. Results: The validity results of BOT2-BF were found to be significantly better in all subtests in the control group than in the study group, having higher performance levels (p<0.05). The BOT2-BF demonstrated high test-retest reliability (ICC >0.8) (except Fine Motor Precision (ICC=0.57) and Manual Dexterity Subtest (ICC=0.74) and good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha =0.78) for all domains. The inter-rater reliability results were found to be perfectly reliable (ICC >0.9). Conclusion: The Turkish version of BOT2-BF was found to be a valid and reliable assessment to evaluate motor proficiency in children with SLD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a case study of a 38-year-old Turkish woman presented with progressive swelling of the right hand of 2 years' duration that had caused difficulty in manual work and reduction in manual dexterity. Dermatologic examination revealed brawny, soft, pitting edema; erythema; and crusts affecting the dorsal aspect of the right hand and proximal parts of the fingers; and the yellow discoloration of the skin and nails was attributed to potassium permanganate wet dressings.

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the fine and gross motor skills of children with diplegic cerebral palsy (CP) according to gender. Methods: This study included 73 children with diplegic CP (39 males, mean age: 8.76±1.4; 34 females mean age: 8.29±1.31 years) aged between 6 to 12 years. Bruininks-Oseretsky Test 2-Short Form (BOT2-SF), consisting of 8 subtests and 12 items, was used to evaluate the gross and fine motor skills of children. Fine and gross motor skills of children with CP were compared with Student's t-test. Results: According to gender, the BOT2-SF total score and fine motor precision, bilateral coordination and upper-limb coordination scores of sub-tests were statistically significant higher in girls than in boys (p<0.05). Conclusion: The results of our current study reflect that fine and gross motor skills of girls with diplegic CP are better than boys. Physiotherapists and ergotherapists should first determine the fine and gross motor skill problems with objective measurement methods and especially consider the differences between genders when determining an integrated multi-factor therapeutic approach for children with diplegic CP.
