RARE earth metals ,XENOTIME ,RARE earth ions ,ZIRCON ,GRANITE ,PHENOCRYSTS ,MINERALS - Abstract
This paper reports on the rare earth element (REE) deposit in Bukit Enggang Granite in Sik, Kedah, and its enrichment patterns. The granitic rock in the study area is porphyritic biotite granite with K-feldspar, quartz and biotite as the main minerals, with randomly arranged K-feldspar phenocrysts. The average REE content in rock samples is 340.9 ppm. The exposed weathered profiles are between 3 to 7 meters in thickness. The C horizon is thicker than the B horizon. The average REE content in soil samples taken from the weathered profiles is 943.9 ppm. Interpretations from laboratory results reveal that the REE deposit in the study area is of the ion adsorption-type, with the REE enrichment in the weathered profiles originating from easily weathered REE bearing minerals in the parent rock, rather than highly resistant minerals like monazite, xenotime and zircon. To meet the local and international market's timber demands, Azadirachta excelsa, a native tree locally known as a Sentang, has been listed among the potential fast-growing species to be planted for forest plantation establishment in the mid -1990s by the Malaysian government. Understanding wood properties is well known as crucial for the industry to use it as a raw material properly. Because of the underrepresented and limited accessible data on the tree's qualities, the species' potential has been determined. The physical properties of the 25-year-old Sentang tree planted in Gurun, Kedah, Malaysia, were discussed in this paper. The impact of radial growth rates on moisture content, density, and shrinkage from the pith to the bark at the stump, DBH, middle, and top of the trees is investigated in this paper. As a result, three trees were cut and classed as slow, average, or fast-growing. The results were as follows. From the pith to the bark, the green MC of all classed trees continues to diminish. The density, on the other hand, did not follow the same pattern; however, fast-growing trees have lower densities than slower-growing trees at the bottom, DBH, middle, and top of the trees. Tangential, radial, and longitudinal shrinkage appeared to reduce as tree height climbed, then increase again at the trees' tops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a real-world school timetabling problem (STP) at a school in Malaysia. The previous studies of solving real-world datasets of STP were focused more on the approaches, rather than the details on generating the real-world of STP datasets. This study aims to provide details on producing the real-world datasets of STP based on the XHSTT dataset format. The real-world case problem has the same constraints as depicted in XHSTT dataset and are categorized into three difficulty levels which are easy, normal and hard based on the difficulty level of preassigned teachers. The STP timetable in this study was obtained from a primary school located in the north of Kedah, Malaysia. Next, the XHSTT dataset was solved using the KHE construction method to produce the solution. The proposed solutions adheres to all the hard and soft constraints set for the datasets. Dialect exists due to the boundaries of geographical area where the speaker lives. Through this boundary there are various local dialects such as Kedah, Terengganu, Kelantan and so on. Similarly, it is also apparent with the sub-dialects in respective states. In fact, researches concerning dialects in general have been variously conducted. This is also concerning researches in Kedah dialect in particular because Malaysia is rich with local dialects and that researches about dialects have never stopped until now. Therefore, this paper is written with a purpose to conceptualise the vocabulary of adjectives in Kedah dialect (KD) based on the speakers' understanding and knowledge about the dialect. This study is applying the urban dialectology approach pioneered Labov, Trudgill and Idris [11, 9, 21] with some modifications. There are six adjectives that have been chosen using interview technique and word list style conducted at some districts in Kedah. The findings of the study showed that the speakers conceptualised the vocabulary based on their own understanding and knowledge. Nonetheless, most Gen Z speakers have never heard of the vocabulary. Hence, it is hoped that this study will contribute to the sociolinguistics development in Malaysia, and to retain the legacy of Malay dialects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sāgaramatiparipṛcchā, "Questions of the Oceanic Intelligence," is the fifth chapter of the Mahāsaṃnipāta, "Great Collection," and is a canonical work belonging to the tradition of Mahāyāna sūtra literature. This sūtra is highly valued in the long history of Mahāyāna Buddhism for its thematic and metaphorical richness, as it personifies the ocean (Skt. sāgara) to represent core aspects of the Mahāyāna doctrinal system. This paper presents two small Sanskrit fragments of the Sāgaramatiparipṛcchā recently identified in the Schøyen Collection, with transliteration and annotated translation. In order to provide a fuller picture of the textual history of the Sāgaramatiparipṛcchā, a quotation from the text on votive tablets from Kedah, Malaysia, is also discussed. These materials are employed as a case study within the context of tangible and intangible heritage. On the basis of the UNESCO declaration of 2003, it is argued that these two kinds of heritage are intrinsically interlinked, and that the categories and their pertaining definitions can be broadened so as to be relevant to more traditions and their heritage. Up to half of Malaysia's private higher education institutions could be forced to close if the country's private higher education sector were to collapse, leaving only those with substantial financial support to remain open. More than half of the country's small businesses have shut down due to the Covid-19 coronavirus, which has almost likely pushed the country into recession. This has worsened the prognosis for the already troubled university sector. Hence, student loyalty is another proven solution in combating these challenges. The purpose of this research is to look into and analyse the impact of service quality, university image, student satisfaction, and loyalty at private universities in Kedah, Malaysia. As this paper is a pilot study, therefore 150 questionnaires were distributed to target respondents. SPSS was used to analyse the 86 samples of private university students in the northern region of Malaysia. Findings postulate that only service quality, commitment and satisfaction affect a loyalty among private university student in northern region. This study helps institutions, teachers, and policymakers understand what makes private university students want for them to keep loyal with the universities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study of heritage sites in Kedah began around the 1840s in the Bujang Valley until now. Various types of heritage sites especially archaeological sites are found around the Bujang Valley, particularly in Pengkalan Bujang, Sungai Mas and Sungai Batu. The definition of Bujang Valley includes the area from Sungai Sala in the North, Gunung Jerai, Sungai Merbok Valley and Sungai Muda to Cherok Tokkun. This situation contributes to the research on archaeotourism because it has a great impact on the local community and the country in particular. The research method used in this study are field research and library research. Field research was done by carrying out an observation in the area involved. Meanwhile, library research involved searching for primary sources by referring to excavation reports by the National Heritage Department as well as written reports found in the National Museum Library and some public universities. The research heritage sites involved sites that were frequently visited by both local and foreign tourists. The results of the study found that environmental factors play an important role in contributing to the increase in tourist arrivals that attract tourism interest in archaeotourism in the Bujang Valley. This paper explains the archaeotourism aspect that can be adapted through the discovery of Kedah heritage sites in the Bujang Valley and focuses at the environmental factors that contribute to the discovery of Kedah heritage sites. FINANCIAL stress ,LOANS ,HISTORICAL source material ,MALAYS (Asian people) ,DEBT ,DILEMMA ,URBAN poor - Abstract
This study emphasises the development of the socio-economy of the Malay community in Kedah. The issues focused on are related to the debt and poverty which had been the dilemma and shackled the Malay community, specifically the farmers. This research will unfold the factors that had led the farmers to like being indebted. This practice was seen to be the norm to the everyday life in handling hardship. In addition, the practice of indebtedness too had led the farmers to fall into the scourge of poverty. This research fully uses historical documents and materials which include books, articles, files from the state secretary, CO 273 Straits Settlements, Original Correspondence, 1838-1922 and CO 716, Kedah/Perlis Sessional Papers, 1905-1937. It was found that for the first quarter of the 20th century, the Malays in Kedah specifically the farmers suffered from financial difficulties. They were not only faced with poverty but also oppression from the middlemen and mounting debts. Many of these farmers at that time had to borrow from the loan sharks who were seen as the main source of income to settle all their bad debts. This research provides understanding about poverty, oppression and middleman issues. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the level of hibah knowledge among Muslims in Kedah and investigate its determinants, consisting of education level, education stream, religiosity, social influence and social media. Design/methodology/approach: This study is quantitative in nature. Questionnaires were distributed to collect data from Muslims in Alor Setar, Kedah. In total, 195 questionnaires were collected and data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. Findings: The study finds that Muslims in Alor Setar, Kedah have good knowledge of hibah. Further, education stream, religiosity, social influence and social media were identified as significant factors that influence their knowledge of hibah. Research limitations/implications: The first limitation is its narrow focus in surveying Muslims only in Alor Setar, Kedah. The second limitation is the limited number of determinants used in investigating hibah knowledge among Muslims and the techniques used in analyzing the data. Despite these limitations, the study's findings provide invaluable insights into the factors influencing hibah knowledge among Muslims in Alor Setar, Kedah. Practical implications: This study provides insights regarding the significant personal factors and environmental factors to increase Muslims' knowledge of hibah. The link between the Islamic education stream and hibah knowledge provides a clear indication that Islamic education can curb the economic problems caused by the substantial amounts of frozen and unclaimed assets in Malaysia. A significant relationship between the environmental factors (social influence and social media) and hibah knowledge also implies that the government and private agencies related to Islamic estate planning and management may use these significant determinants as part of the marketing strategy to increase the usage of hibah as an alternative tool for estate planning. Originality/value: This study contributes to a better understanding of Muslims' knowledge about hibah. The government and related agencies in Islamic estate planning and management can now gain better insights into Muslims' level of knowledge about hibah and the factors influencing their knowledge of hibah as an effective tool for Islamic estate planning and management. Hence, more effective strategies can be recommended to enhance the knowledge of Muslims on hibah. The findings of this study should be of value to the government in its effort to address the increasing number of frozen estates in Malaysia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PORT cities ,TELECOMMUNICATION systems ,FOOD supply ,DOMESTIC animals ,NATIONAL archives - Abstract
This article will approach the development of Alor Setar as a commercial centre in the era between 1735-1909. Within this context, the advancement of this city will be plotted from the aspect of the commercial activities being conducted as well as the factors that triggered the growth of a better and rapid-growing Alor Setar. This study uses the qualitative measurement which involves the collection and data analysis from primary sources obtained from the National Archive of Malaysia such as letters sent by Sultan Muhammad Jiwa to Francis Light, Reminders from the Rulers of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Hamid's Letters and CO 716, Kedah/Perlis Sessional Papers, 1905-1937. The outcome of this study shows that since the year of 1735, when Alor Setar began its operation as the state administration centre, the city had become the hub for local people and also foreigners. Within this period of time, there was evidence of hasty trading activities between Alor Setar and foreign traders from Penang, India and China. Among the commodities being merchandised were food supplies namely rice, farm animals and woods. The consequence of these transactions provided a large sum of income to Kedah state. In addition, the commercial activities in Alor Setar had been enhanced with the presence of trading emporiums which allotted stores selling assorted items, for example the pawn shop, textile stores and groceries stores. The existence of Alor Setar as a rapid-growing commercial centre was contributed by several factors such as the effectiveness of administration, the efficiency of town safety control, the sophistication of the communication and transportation system, the competency of health control system and also the presence of town port. These indeed have become the undeniably alluring attractions for traders to pursue their trading business. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

RUBBER plantations ,CHINESE people ,WORLD War II ,TIRE recycling ,AGRICULTURAL history - Abstract
Kedah is a state with a history in the agricultural sector, such as rice and cassava production, since before the arrival of the British. However, the rubber started to be brought in after the British intervention in 1909, prompting many European and Chinese investors to open rubber plantations on a large scale. Until the beginning of the Second World War in 1941, the production of rubber cultivation overgrew. This paper aims to investigate the extent of the role and contribution of the Chinese in the Kedah rubber plantation sector from 1909 to 1941. This research highlights the method of content analysis as a key data collection method on the history of the Chinese in Kedah through The National Archives of Malaysia for data analysis on the function and contribution of the rubber cultivation field. The results of the study found that the Chinese were involved in developing the rubber plantation sector since the beginning rubber was introduced in 1909. Besides, they are also entrepreneurs and owners of rubber plantations. Up to 1930, the acreage of rubber plantations owned by the Chinese in Kedah exceeds another race such as Malay and India. Chinese workers were also brought in to further boost the rubber plantation sector. The Chinese also established associations among rubber entrepreneurs to look after the welfare of each other. Subsequently, several policies involving rubber cultivation were introduced by the British such as the introduction of ownership licenses and the sale of rubber. As a result, the significant involvement of the Chinese in the rubber plantation sector has increased the economic output of the state of Kedah. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FINITE element method ,CONCRETE dams ,DAMS ,GROUND motion ,SHEARING force - Abstract
This paper focused on the behavior of the dam when exposed to seismic loading and ability of the dam to withstand the applied loads from various seismic events. The chosen concrete dam to be referred to in the twodimensional analysis is Beris Dam located in Kedah, Malaysia. A nonlinear dynamic analysis is chosen to analyse the behavior of Beris Dam under selected ground motion. Analysis of the dam is performed using the finite element method by utilizing ABAQUS software. From the cracking analysis pattern, a crack appeared at the upstream face of the dam caused mainly by the excessive tensile stress. Based on the results, the displacement of the dam is increased with the increasing of ground motion data where the displacement occurred in the horizontal direction. The maximum stresses exerted by the dam structure do not exceed the allowable capacity of concrete dams. The stress behaviour of the dam was satisfactorily acceptable as the maximum normal stress and shear stress of the dam when numerous seismic loadings are applied do not exceed the allowable stress capacity which is 800 kN/m2. INTERNAL migration ,INTERNAL migrants ,COLONIZATION ,STRAITS ,CHINESE people - Abstract
This article discusses the migration of the Malays to Kerian, Perak from 1816 until 1873. The migration of the Malays from Malay states in general and in Perak specifically before the British colonisation in 1874, has never been discussed in detail in any publications on migration as the main subject. Instead, the existing writings on the Malays' migration of Peninsular Malay states date their discussions back to the British colonial intervention in 1874. Lack of resources is the main factor impeding more discussions of the topic research on the migration still needs to be done to fill in the gaps in scholarship on the migration among Malays in the Peninsula. In addition, the existing writings on migration in the Peninsular Malay states focus on the migration of the Chinese and Indian migrants as well as the migration of the Malays from the islands of the Dutch Indies (now known as the Indonesian Archipelago). This helps raise questions on the existence as well as importance of the internal Malay migration in the Peninsula. This article finds that, the internal migration of the Malays which refers to the migration from Kedah, Seberang Perai and Pulau Pinang beginning from 1816 was very significant in the emergence of Kerian as an important paddy cultivation district to the Perak administration as direct British colonisation of Perak in 1874 approached. The primary sources used in writing this article are the records of the British administrators in the Straits Settlements and The Burney Papers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Purpose: Formal learning in schools generally does not provide enough engagement for students to grasp the science concepts and skills taught to them. Therefore, the structured informal learning activities such as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) integrated projectbased learning is vital for students to partake in the more meaningful science learning process as it involves interdisciplinary activities. Hence, this paper discusses the study that underlies the structured informal learning activity, the STEM project-based approach, in enhancing conceptual understanding and inventive thinking skills among secondary school students. Methodology: A quasi-experimental research design concerning treatment and control groups with pretest as the covariate was employed in this project. The sample was selected based on the purposive sampling approach. Seventy Form Four students (33 male students and 37 female students) from a secondary school in Kedah, Malaysia were divided into 35 students of a controlled group (received conventional approach) and 35 students of the treatment group (followed STEM project-based approach). Data collected via the Newtonian Conceptual Understanding Test (NCUT) and Inventive Thinking Skills Test (ITST) were then analysed descriptively and inferentially. Findings: The structured informal learning activity, the STEM project-based approach, was found effective in enhancing conceptual understanding and inventive thinking skills among secondary school students. Further analysis showed that the elements of thinking skills (management and adaptation to complexity, self-regulation, curiosity, creativity, risk-readiness, and high-order thinking skills and sound reasoning) were also improved among students who followed STEM project-based approach. Contributions: The study highlighted the importance of a structured informal learning activity, such as the STEM project-based approach in assisting students to grasp the science concepts and develop the required 21st-century learning skills besides formal learning in schools. AFRICAN penguin ,SEX ratio ,SPERM competition - Abstract
This paper provides a demographic analysis of six years information collected on an African penguin (Sphenicus demersus) colony of Underwater World Langkawi (UWL) at Langkawi Island, Kedah, Peninsular Malaysia. These information include reproduction, sex ratio, seasonality, egg-laying date interval and age range of breeding. From the period of 2006 to 2011, 27 chicks survived while 16 chicks died within six years. The sex ratio favoured the female with 1.8:1 in 2006 and 1.38:1 in 2011, although the gender of about 14 second-generation individuals was unknown. Eggs were laid in all months of the year, but a higher frequency was observed between August and January or between autumn and winter (in the southern area). The calculated interval of egg-laying dates for each egg production was 6.719 ± 4.18 months. The mean intervals of egg-laying dates for identified females were 9.239 ± 4.26 months and 5.196 ± 3.34 months for rear infants and non-rear offspring, respectively. The age at first female egg production ranged between six and twenty years and the males that are actively involved in brooding at the age between three and twenty years. The age of the mother at first weaning of the offspring ranged from six and twenty years (n=43), while the males had first paternity between the ages of three and twenty three years (n=43). Monogamous breeding in the first two years (2006 and 2007) of this study was due to imbalance sex ratio between male and female (2:1) and respectively 1:1 or 1:2 between male to females. The captive colony grew at an average rate of 1.172 per individual per year. In 2011, the calculated rate was 1.15, indicating that the rate remained almost constant. Infant mortality in the first two months was 32.5%. This information is beneficial to increase the effectiveness of the management and conservation of African penguins in captivity. Alor Setar was the earliest location in Kedah which received the implementation of the domestic water supply plan by the British beginning in 1909. This initiative was due to administrative, economic, health, population and other relevant factors. Thus, the British built several water plants and the projects turned into a water supply module in other locations in the Kedah state. This paper would like to see the role of the British in developing the water supply system in Alor Setar from 1909 to 1957. This research began in 1909 due to the introduction to British advisers in the state of Kedah and ended in 1957 as the year was the final phase of the British domination in Kedah before the independence of the Federation of Malaya on August 31, 1957. This research employed materials and data from the National Archives of Kedah / Perlis, National Archives of Malaysia, University of Malaya Main Library, the Kedah Public Library, Tun Sri Lanang Library of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Kedah Water Company (SADA). The results of the study found that British advisers in Kedah successfully abandoned the water supply module in Alor Setar and succeeded in raising the standard of living of the residents at the stated locations. Tanjong Piandang is a Chinese fishing village in Krian, Perak, Malaysia. It first appeared in Anderson's work in 1824 as a favorite resort for pirates. The people in Tanjong Piandang had the reputation of being a lawless and turbulent lot, and the British colonial government tried to demolish the settlement twice by burning it down after riots. Each time, villagers gathered together and rebuilt their houses. This paper investigates how the colonial government tried to maintain law and order in this space, and the local resistance that attempted, though ultimately failed, to keep the colonial power out their village. Most of the studies on the grassroots resistance against British rule in Malaya are concentrated on the local Malay communities, not on the Chinese who are considered as a migrant community. Therefore, Tanjong Piandang is a good case study of Chinese resistance against the British. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Foodborne pathogens have become a major concern not only due to the diseases they cause, but also because of the rise of antibiotic resistant strains in human and animals. The purposes of this study were to deter-mine the occurrence of Campylobacter jejuni and Escherichia coli and their antibiotic resistance profiles in wild birds, chickens, humans, and the environment in Malay villages in Malaysia. Three Malay villages in Kota Setar, Kedah were chosen. Three hundred nine (309) samples were collected in this study including wild birds (38), chickens (71), humans (47), and the environment (153). Subsequently, the C. jejuni and E coli isolates were tested against antibiotics using the disc diffusion method. Campylobacter jejuni was found positive in 17 (37.8%) flies and 8 (11.3%) chickens. Also, E. coli was found positive in 89.4% of human, 47.4% of bird, 44 62% of chicken and in 71.2% of the environmental samples. Ten antibiotics were used to determine the susceptibility of the isolates. Eighty four percent (84%) of C. jejuni and 100% of E. coli isolates were found to show resistance towards at least one antibiotic. The isolates showed high resistance to cefpodoxime and tetracycline. On March 8, 2008, PAS led the coalition to victory in Kedah, winning 16 seats, while Barisan National won only 14 state seats. The PAS manifesto and campaign speeches in Kedah emphasized Islamic ethics, a just, clean, and pure government which would strive to improve the conditions of all the people. These notions of a 'just' and 'unmixed' party struggling to 'strengthen Islam' resonated with many Malays in Kedah. In contrast, UMNO was depicted as corrupt practitioners of bribes and money politics who prioritize the interests of the rich over the needy. They were criticized as materialist, elitist figures stuck in their ways like the Pharaoh, while PAS' commitment to upholding Islam was likened to the prophets. In addition, this paper discusses the way PAS approaches the issue of the 'social contract' between Malays and other ethnic groups and the way their construct of Malay identity spoke to many Malay voters. I argue that PAS rhetoric must be viewed as more than political use of Islamic symbols, and that its effectiveness rests in the way it evokes more extensive cultural models. Finally, this paper considers the controversial post-election demolition of a pig slaughterhouse in a predominantly Malay kampong in Kota Setar, Kedah. Here I argue that this case embodies and reaffirms the cultural politics of the general election. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study reported in this paper represents one of the first attempts at exploring the perspectives of the local communities on the designation of Langkawi Island in Malaysia as a UNESCO Global Geopark. It is premised on the widely acknowledged assertion that the local communities constitute an important group of stakeholders in the planning and implementation of development activities. Hence, the communities living in the geopark areas in Langkawi are considered important stakeholders who play a crucial role in the development of heritage tourism in Langkawi Global Geopark. This paper examines their views on their appreciation of the geopark as heritage, the interpretation of their shared values, the benefits and opportunities afforded by the geopark, and the extent of their involvement in the implementation of geopark activities. The findings point to the need for more support for public education programmes, and awareness initiatives aimed not only at ensuring community engagement with the development of Langkawi Geopark but also at generating stewardship actions from the community. The hydrodynamic effects of estuarine mangrove trees on tsunami currents have been studied in this paper. An existing two-dimensional depth-integrated numerical model, with both the effects of drag force induced by mangrove trees and the blockage effects on the water flow through mangrove swamps, have been included. To investigate how these trees affect the attenuation of the tsunami current at the head of the estuary, one idealised case has been considered with mangrove trees distributed along the whole channel. This model has been used to simulate the water level variations and velocities induced by tsunami currents at three locations along the centre of the channel. Recorded data of tide elevation during a historical tsunami have been used to set up the open seaward boundary condition in this model. Three cases of different diameters and densities of idealised mangrove trees have been studied to examine the significance of the vegetation on the current attenuation. It was found that mangrove trees have a significant impact on the hydrodynamic processes of tsunami waves. The model has also been set to simulate these tsunami currents in a real estuary, namely the Merbok estuary, Kedah, Malaysia. Simulations have been undertaken for the swamp area and main river, for both conditions of with and without mangrove trees, with the aim of studying the effects of mangrove trees on the hydrodynamic processes during a tsunami. Comparisons of velocity profiles and water elevations for both cases have been undertaken. These results show that the mangroves help in reducing the effects of a tsunami in the main river and swamp areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the use of piecewise interpolation method based on cubic Ball and Bézier curves representation to estimate the missing value of solar radiation in Kedah. An hourly solar radiation dataset is collected at Alor Setar Meteorology Station that is taken from Malaysian Meteorology Deparment. The piecewise cubic Ball and Bézier functions that interpolate the data points are defined on each hourly intervals of solar radiation measurement and is obtained by prescribing first order derivatives at the starts and ends of the intervals. We compare the performance of our proposed method with existing methods using Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and Coefficient of Detemination (CoD) which is based on missing values simulation datasets. The results show that our method is outperformed the other previous methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GLYCEMIC control , *TYPE 2 diabetes , *DIABETES , *PEOPLE with diabetes , *CROSS-sectional method - Abstract
Introduction: type 2 diabetes mellitus has become a global public health crisis. The increment in the cases has contributed significantly to the parallel increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity. This paper aimed to analyse the relationship between lipid profile, waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) with the glycaemic control of the diabetes patients in Kedah. Methods: a cross-sectional study was conducted, using the Kedah audit samples data extracted from the National Diabetes Registry (NDR) from the year 2014 to 2018. A total of 25,062 registered type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were selected using the inclusion and exclusion criteria from the registry. Only patients with complete data on their HbA1C, lipid profile, waist circumference and BMI were analysed using SPSS version 21. Results: the means for the age, BMI and waist circumference of the samples were 61.5 (±10.85) years, 27.3 (±5.05) kg/m2 and 89.46 (±13.58) cm, respectively. Poor glycaemic control (HbA1c>6.5%) was observed in 72.7% of the patients, with females having poorer glycaemic control. The BMI and waist circumference were found to be significantly associated with glycaemic control (P<0.001). The total cholesterol, triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins values showed positive correlation with glycaemic control (r = 0.178, 0.157, 0.145, p<0.001), while high-density lipoproteins values are negatively correlated (r = -0.019, p<0.001). Conclusion: implementing lifestyle changes such as physical activity and dietary modifications are important in the management of BMI, waist circumference and body lipids, which in turn results in improved glycaemic control. Preliminary research on physicochemical and water quality in the Beris dam shows that the water catchment area has the best standards and quality during the observation of the wet season and dry season mainly in the northern states of peninsular Malaysia. The analysis of water quality assessment using the DOE-WQI and Carlson Trophic State Index (CTSI) resulted that during the dry season (February), the average DOE-WQI reading is 88 or Class II; while during the wet season, the average DOE-WQI reading recorded 87.1 (October). Although the CTSI score was 34.2 - 27.0 during wet season and dry season, both seasons were classified as oligotrophic conditions. Some physicochemical parameters also show a high correlation between them and indicates minor water quality issues. The use of more efficient interpolation techniques in water quality studies also reinforces the evaluation of water quality. As a reference point for future water research, GIS interpolation application methods can be more effectively and efficiently used with Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging and Spline techniques. The underdeveloped state of research publishing and collaborative networks in polytechnics and community colleges serves as a crucial indicator to improve innovative work behavior. Ethical leaders need to become more effective in their roles to handle challenges with greater ease in the development of the fourth technological revolution. This study investigates the effect of ethical leadership on academic staff's innovative work behavior in polytechnics and community colleges. Specifically, this study hypothesizes that intrinsic motivation and proactive personality mediate the relationship between ethical leadership and innovative work behavior. A total of 254 data were collected from 15 polytechnics and community colleges in Penang, Kedah, and Perlis. This study employed the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. Results indicated that ethical leadership did not have a direct effect on innovative work behavior. Nevertheless, intrinsic motivation and proactive personality mediated the relationship between ethical leadership and innovative work behavior. Therefore, ethical leaders should be conscious of the importance of ethical behavior and continuously practice these principles. This practice can result in boosting the intrinsic motivation and proactive personality of academic staff, ultimately improving their innovative work behavior. Implications and limitations are also presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Water resources must be preserved because they are vital for agricultural, industrial, and domestic use, especially in tropical forest regions. Given the importance of the Ulu Muda Forest Reserve to the Kedah state in sustaining paddy cultivation for the country, this study aimed to provide reliable forest classification method and produce Normalized Difference Vegetation Index-Maximum Likelihood Classification of forest density map for Ulu Muda Forest Reserve. Here, the study reports measurements of the satellite remote sensing index for the forest based the image date. The forest recorded NDVI index of 0.72 to 0.98 for high density, NDVI index of 0.61 to 0.71 for moderate and NDVI index of 0.26 to 0.60 for low density area. The index showed higher value, which is comparable with reports of other tropical forest elsewhere. The results were influenced using satellite remote sensing pre-processing, processing, and classification. As a result, based on the satellite image indices approach, upper threshold of the higher density, the forest can exhibit higher capability for sustaining its ecological and hydrological functions. Given that most of the tropical forest biome has sustained this threshold, forest management should be sustained at this state, and more measures should be taken for example increase of protection forest classification in Rancangan Pengurusan Hutan (RPH) that is one of yearly planning report in states of Peninsular Malaysia. In the meantime, Geographical Information System (GIS) capacity should be mandate looking forwards for more utilisation in mapping for planning and projection of forest resource management activities. The variety of Acehnese spoken in Malaysia, in particular the way in which it is pronounced, has thus far received little attention in the literature. One group of Malaysian Acehnese speakers can be found in a village in the northwest of Peninsular Malaysia. The present paper examines the oral monophthong vowels of the Acehnese variety spoken in this village based on an analysis of the formant values of the monophthong vowels produced by speakers from this location. The main aim of the paper is to determine the characteristics of monophthong vowels in the Malaysian Acehnese variety. The first and second formant values of the vowels were extracted and analysed from ten female Malaysians of Acehnese descent living in Kampung Aceh in Kedah. Comparisons with vowels in the Indonesian Acehnese variety were also carried out. Our findings indicate that most of the Malaysian Acehnese monophthongs displayed similar qualities with the Indonesian variety of Acehnese. However, there appears to be a loss of / ʌ /, and a more back production of / ǝ /, and in some cases / a /. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Resistivity and seismic refraction are conventional methods in preinvestigations of subsurface structures, which are commonly employed and interpreted separately to reduce ambiguities from each method. Although integration of the two methods' models into a single model was recently introduced, the integration still requires enhancement to generate an accurate subsurface profile. Therefore, an enhanced algorithm called closure coupling technique was developed to integrate 2-dimensional (2-D) models of resistivity and seismic refraction to become a single integrated model where one model influences the other model. The resultant integrated model is superior in mapping the subsurface compared with singular resistivity and seismic models. These methods were then applied on a pre-investigative field dataset in finding ancient river for archaeological point of interest. Due to complex geology, only slight changes were observed in the inverted model of the integrated data inversion for this archetype. Still, the combined model enhanced subsurface interpretation by highlighting the distribution of buried alluvial soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the management of cash waqf fund generation through the implementation of istibdal in Kedah. Design/methodology/approach: The data are obtained through literature and empirical data. The authors first review the literature on the importance of waqf fundraising, the implementation factors of istibdal waqf and the relevance of istibdal method as a waqf fund generation medium to understand the extent to which the scholarly articles have discussed these topics. Furthermore, the authors conducted face-to-face interviews with two Kedah Islamic Religious Council (Majlis Agama Islam Kedah [MAIK]) officers, who were directly involved in the affairs of istibdal waqf to obtain holistic information regarding implementing istibdal waqf properties in Kedah. As a result, several themes are defined from the interview data before being analysed based on the content analysis method. Findings: The results of the study show two istibdal implementation processes outlined by the Kedah Islamic Religious Council (MAIK), namely, the istibdal implementation process for waqf land registered title deed, and waqf land registered as reserve certificate for religious use like mosque and cemetery. The results also showed three factors in implementing istibdal in Kedah: the acquisition of waqf land by the state authority (PBN), istibdal application by the state education department (JPN) and istibdal application by the mosque committee. Out of eight cases of istibdal implementation, four have generated cash funds for MAIK through investment methods from the sale of waqf lands and rental of replaced shophouses that are able to cover the expenses of managing waqf properties in Kedah. Several suggestions are also recommended for MAIK to improve its istibdal policy, thus enabling the institution to generate cash waqf funds at the maximum rate. Research limitations/implications: This study only focused on the implementation factors and the generation of cash waqf funds through istibdal in Kedah, while it can be expanded to other states like Terengganu, Kelantan and Penang. Furthermore, this study only interviewed officers who manage matters related to the affairs of waqf properties, as the session can actually be extended to other respondents, such as those specialising in cash fund generation investments and others. Practical implications: This study proposed some improvements to the policy and guidelines of istibdal waqf property to MAIK after a few shortcomings were identified throughout this study. If improved, these proposals will have a significant impact, especially on the waqf properties involved in the implementation of istibdal, where it has the potential to bring cash generation and ensure the constant economic value of waqf properties. Social implications: This study has a tremendous impact on society, in which their areas have cash waqf funds that can be developed. It can benefit the needy and increase funds for the welfare expenditure of Muslims through rental income, investment and development. Progress on waqf property provides a high indication of the efficiency of an organisation in managing the waqf property. Thus, the public, especially the rich, is motivated to fulfil their charitable practices through waqf mechanism and share their wealth with the needy. Originality/value: This study contributes to comprehensive field data on the implementation factors and generation of cash waqf funds through the implementation of istibdal in Kedah. The results of this study are significant to be used by waqf property management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

POOR people ,ISLAMIC law ,REVENUE ,ZAKAT ,LAW enforcement - Abstract
Tithe or alms is an important source of revenue for the state to improve the economic condition of the poor. Management of the tithe collection as well as its effective distribution will help develop the community. Thus, this paper aims to study the Islamic administration of tithe in two states, namely Aceh in Indonesia and Kedah in Malaysia. Both states have their own relationship in a context where they both have a large number of Muslims, the majority of which are ethnic Malays, and they constitute one of the early regions to accept Islam. The focus of the study is based on historical analysis, economic growth and development, as well as the contemporary scenario in the administration of tithe law. The study will investigate the role of tithe as a fund for community development within the state, its management as well as the administration of the law. For this purpose, the study is conducted using qualitative methods and interviews with a number of respondents in order to examine the administrative aspects of Islamic law on tithe. The finding shows that the strict enforcement of law, accompanied by institutions organised with manpower and focused objectives, will have an impact on the tithe collections as well as the confidence of community towards the institutions. Abstract: This paper used a primary data collected through a surveys among farmers in rural Kedah to examine the effect of non farm income on poverty and income inequality. This paper employed two method, for the first objective which is to examine the impact of non farm income to poverty, we used poverty decomposition techniques- Foster, Greer and Thorbecke (FGT) as has been done by Adams (2004). For the second objective, which is to examine the impact of non farm income to income inequality, we used Gini decomposition techniques. Our result indicate that non farm income can improve the level of poverty or non farm income sources contributed towards poverty reduction among agricultural household. All of the poverty measures show that the inclusion of non-farm income into the agricultural household income reduce the level, depth and severity of poverty. But on the other hand, non farm income increased income inequality among agricultural household in Kedah. As expected agricultural income is the main source of income for rural people in the study area. The policy implication of this study is to encourage non-farm income activities among agricultural households as this would raise their income and hence, reduce poverty among them. However, it should be focused on value-added activities, especially on the lower income group. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

HEAVY metals in the body ,FARMERS ,CADMIUM in the body - Abstract
Heavy metals, particularly cadmium, lead, and arsenic, constitute a significant potential threat to human health. This study was conducted to determine the levels of cadmium, lead, and arsenic in nail samples from farmers at Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA), Kedah, Malaysia, and evaluate factors that can contribute to their accumulations. A total of 116 farmers participated in this study. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to analyze concentration of heavy metals in the nail samples and questionnaires were given to participants to get demographic, health status, and their agricultural activities data. In this paper, the level of heavy metals was within the normal range and varies according to demographic factors. We found that there were significant correlations between working period with level of lead and arsenic (r = 0.315 and r = 0.242, resp., P < 0.01) and age with lead level (r = 0.175, P < 0.05). Our findings suggested that agricultural activities could contribute to the accumulation of heavy metals in farmers. Hence, the control of environmental levels of and human exposure to these metals to prevent adverse health effects is still an important public health issue. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Anti-inflammatory reliever (AIR) with or without regular maintenance delivered through Turbuhaler® has been widely recommended in the GINA strategy document. These patients are not prescribed with additional reliever inhalers, but dependent on Turbuhaler
® during acute asthma episodes. The peak inspiratory flow rate (PIFR) is crucial in drug delivery from a dry powder inhaler (DPI) such as Turbuhaler® . Despite its increasing usage, there are some concerns that patients on Turbuhaler® are not able to achieve adequate PIFR during acute exacerbation of asthma. This study aimed to assess the PIFR at resistance settings that matched Turbuhaler® in patients with acute exacerbation of asthma. A six-month cross-sectional study was conducted at the Emergency Department (ED) of Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah and Hospital Kulim, Kedah, Malaysia. Adult patients diagnosed with mild to moderate acute exacerbations of asthma were recruited. The PIFRs were measured using the In-Check DIAL G16 that was set to simulate the resistance of Turbuhaler® (R3). The PIFRs were assessed before (pre) and after (post) the initial bronchodilator (BD) treatment at the ED. The minimal required PIFR was defined as flow rates ≥ 30 L/min while a PIFR of 60 L/min was considered as optimal. A total of 151 patients (81 females and 70 males) were recruited. The mean age was 37.5 years old with a range between 18 and 79 years old. The results showed that 98% (n = 148) of patients managed to achieve the minimal PIFR required for pre-BD. The mean PIFR pre-BD was 60 ± 18.5 L/min and post-BD was 70 ± 18.5 L/min. Furthermore, more than half (54%, n = 82) of the patients recorded PIFR ≥ 60 L/min during pre-BD, and about three-quarters (71%, n = 92) achieved PIFR ≥ 60 L/min post-BD. The PIFR showed a moderate correlation with peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) (r = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.43–0.65, p < 0.001). The majority of patients with asthma in the present study were able to achieve sufficient PIFR from Turbuhaler® during mild to moderate acute exacerbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

TEACHER organizations ,BRITISH colonies - Abstract
This article discusses the struggles of Kedah Malay teachers through the Kedah Malay Teachers’ Association (PGMK) in dealing with language issues particularly pertaining to the Malay language medium in the Malay education system before independence. Apart from salary increment claims, they demanded the British colonialists acknowledge Malay as a communication language in all the Malay schools across Kedah. With regard to this, the main objective of this study is to highlight the role of Malay teachers of Kedah, through their association, in demanding for their own welfare and Malay education by making the Malay language as the main language taught in primary schools and secondary schools in the then Malaya. They argue that the colonial-era education system introduced by the British government is not suitable in the local education system. The discussion in this article is based on analyses of historical resources from the newspapers and magazines before independence, i.e., Warta Negara, Majalah Guru and The Straits Times as well as the archival research method study analysing British documents. This research employed primary and secondary resources from archives, the PGMK office and university libraries. This writing piece traces the struggles of Malay teachers to pressure the colonial government in taking the necessary steps to address the issue of making the Malay language the medium in the school system. The study successfully proves the impact of teachers as advocates for the Malays over the colonial government which resulted in several changes in the demands for salary claims, teachers’ educational opportunities, school facilities and language issues. Background: The social acceptability of wild freshwater macrophytes as locally consumed vegetables is widespread. Freshwater macrophytes have several uses; for example, they can be used as food for humans. This study determined the proximate composition and mineral content of three freshwater macrophyte species, i.e., Eichhornia crassipes, Limnocharis flava, and Neptunia oleracea. Methods: Young shoots of E. crassipes, L. flava, and N. oleracea were collected from shallow channels of Puchong (3°00'11.89″N, 101°42'43.12″E), Ladang 10, Universiti Putra Malaysia (2°58'44.41″N, 101°42'44.45″E), and Kampung Alur Selibong, Langgar (06°5'50.9″N, 100°26'49.8″E), Kedah, Peninsular Malaysia. The nutritional values of these macrophytes were analysed by using a standard protocol from the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. Eight replicates of E. crassipes and L. flava and four replicates of N. oleracea were used for the subsequent analyses. Results: In the proximate analysis, N. oleracea possessed the highest percentage of crude protein (29.61%) and energy content (4,269.65 cal g-1), whereas L. flava had the highest percentage of crude fat (5.75%) and ash (18.31%). The proximate composition trend for each species was different; specifically, all of the species possessed more carbohydrates and fewer crude lipids. All of the species demonstrated a similar mineral trend, with high nitrogen and potassium and lower copper contents. Nitrogen and potassium levels ranged from 12,380-40,380 mg kg-1 and from 11,212-33,276 mg kg-1, respectively, and copper levels ranged from 16-27 mg kg-1. The results showed that all three plant species, i.e., E. crassipes, N. oleracea, and L. flava are plant-based sources of macro- and micronutrient beneficial supplements for human consumption. Wildlife-vehicle collisions (WVC) pose threats to wildlife as road and traffic density increases across the landscapes. Although the biophysical factors of road-kills have been extensively studied, studies on the psychosocial factors that focus on the drivers remain understudied. A survey questionnaire was conducted to examine the drivers' perceptions and attitudes towards WVC. The frequency of WVC was monitored along the main roads in Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia. The field data showed similar results with driver perceptions on WVC that mammal was the most affected group. Most respondents thought WVC incidence happened during the night. They viewed WVC as a major problem and claimed that drivers respected animals on the roads; Almost 60% of the respondents strongly felt that the leading cause of WVC was darkness. Respondents would stop their vehicles for cows (n=69) and most likely to hit snakes (n=11). There was a negative correlation between respondents thought drivers who respected animals and deliberate killing was the main contributing factor of WVC (rho= -0.37, p=0.693, n=118). Respondents suggested driver courtesy and changing driving behaviour would be the most effective action to reduce WVC. These findings would be beneficial to increase the ability to predict WVC intensities. Besides, it would assist biologists and road developers in understanding the broad impact of roads and developing future physical infrastructures that are wildlife-friendly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The hydrological mechanism in the river basin is vital to sustain and conserve water resources. Therefore, the study's main aim is to determine the applicability of ArcGIS version 10.0.2 with the Soil and Water Assessment Tools (SWAT) model in the assessment of streamflow in UMFR catchment with a total area of 975 km2 located on the western coast of peninsular Malaysia, Kedah. The statistical model outputs chosen to measure the correlation between observed and simulated flow in the study area are the coefficient of determination (R2), Nash – Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and percent of bias (PBIAS). The results demonstrate a good match between observed and simulated flows, demonstrating that the SWAT model can accurately predict streamflow at UMFR. The findings suggest that during calibration and validation, both NSE, R
2 , and PBIAS are more than 0.5, indicating a strong agreement between observed and simulated flow. The most sensitive parameter that may influence simulation outcomes are SOL_AWC, SOL_K and GW_REVAP. For soil parameters, the most sensitive parameter is SOL_AWC compared to the other soil indicators. These findings justify that the model can predict water balance and water yield in all other river basins in Kedah for sustainable water resources management where the water quantity becomes a critical issue in the states. HERITAGE tourism ,SMELTING ,DIRECT-fired heaters ,RUBBER plantations ,IRON ores ,IRON ,ALUMINUM smelting ,SMELTING furnaces - Abstract
In order to obtain primary data related to the iron smelting activities, the experimental process of furnaces, tuyere and air pumps making is carried out. The experiment has conducted since 2013 through the Knowledge Transfer Program (KTP) in Sungai Batu Archaeological Complex (SBAC). Through the experiment, the clay in this complex has been used as a raw material for furnaces and tuyere making while the bellows is made of wood, plywood and fabric. In order to complete the experiment regarding the raw material that use for iron smelting, iron ore was taken through survey activities in the area of Kampung Batu 5, UiTM Merbok and Bukit Tupah while charcoal was used from rubber wood in the rubber plantation near the Sungai Batu Archaeological Complex. After the experiment was conducted, the results recorded were different from the findings of the iron ingot excavation at the iron smelting site which is likely to occur due to the difference in technique and ratio of materials used during smelting activities. Although the results obtained during the experiment are different, the smelting process can be used as the main reference for offering tourism full packages related to the demonstration of iron smelting in this complex to foreign tourists. RICE farmers ,RICE farming ,BEST practices - Abstract
Agricultural activities including rice farming produces two types of outputs which are known as desirable and undesirable outputs. Therefore, their efficiency should be appropriately evaluated by including these outputs to obtain a reasonable efficiency score and to ensure the farmers are not overly damaging the environment by their agricultural practices. As a result, this research developed two enhanced slack based DDF DEA models which includes undesirable outputs and data uncertainty to measure efficiency of rice farmers. The first model measures efficiency in the presence of undesirable outputs and non-discretionary inputs. The second model uses interval data approach to represent data uncertainty, and measure interval efficiency. Both models are tested to determine the efficiency of 40 rice farmers in Northern Kedah, Malaysia. Empirical findings showed the developed models are suitable to be applied as it can successfully identify the efficient rice farmers and compute input savings, undesirable output reduction and desirable output augmentation for inefficient rice farmers. From the analysis, it is found that 13 farmers are efficient with an efficiency score of 1 while another 27 farmers are inefficient. Additionally, it is also found that the farmers are better performing in optimistic scenario assumptions compared do pessimistic scenario. The average efficiency values of all farmers for deterministic case is always lower than the optimistic scenario and higher than pessimistic scenario. The results show that the proposed model can be applied when data uncertainty is present in the production environment. The proposed models will enable the decision makers to evaluate the performance of rice farmers and take the necessary actions to improve their performance. The best practices employed by efficient farmers can be identified and implemented among all farmers to further improve the farmers efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MALAYS (Asian people) ,CORPORATION reports ,CABINET officers ,GOVERNMENT policy ,TRANSPARENCY in government - Abstract
Rice-planting is synonymous with the Kedah Malays to present times. Paddy is the lifeblood of the majority of Malays in the state for ages. Interestingly, British control over Kedah since 1909 witnessed how, for the first time in Kedah history, the Malays were explicitly compelled by the government to remain in this activity. This new arrangement was clearly evident with the implementation of strict rice-land policies, especially throughout the period 1917-1932. The focus of this research is twofold: firstly, to evaluate the implementation of rice land policies during the period in question, and secondly, to analyse Malay form of reaction to this issue. To answer both questions, this study uses the qualitative method by focusing on Kedah State Secretary Files and the State of Kedah Annual Reports. Based on the analysis of implementation of rice land policies by the Kedah land administration, and the ensuing Malay reaction towards the government in 1917-1932, the implementation of these rice land policies ensured Malay retention in this traditional activity. Unfortunately, a large number of Malays suffered negative effects from these policies. The lower classes were proscribed by the government from opening and working their land as they please, and risked harsh government penalties for failure to adhere to the set policies. In contrast, the Malay elites continued their monopoly of rice lands due to government policy of maintaining their land-owning privileges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Jigsaw II technique has been found to be effective in teaching and learning grammar based on cooperative learning. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the effect of the use of the Jigsaw II technique on Form Four students' attitudes and achievement in Malay grammar learning. Sixty-two students from two boarding schools in Kubang Pasu district, Kedah, Malaysia, were selected to participate in the study. They were divided into a treatment group and a control group. Thirty-one students of the treatment group used the Jigsaw II technique, while thirty-one students of the control group used the Gallery Walk technique. Both groups were given pre-test and post-test. Pre-attitude and post-attitude questionnaires were given to the treatment group only. Data was collected and analysed quantitatively using paired sample t-test, independent sample t-test, and simple linear regression test. The results showed a significant difference in achievement and attitudes for the treatment group in learning Malay grammar after using the Jigsaw II technique. The analysis also showed that the student's attitude also influenced their achievement in learning Malay grammar based on the Jigsaw II technique. In conclusion, language teachers should choose and diversify cooperative learning techniques, such as the Jigsaw II technique, as this technique can also influence students' achievement and attitudes in grammar learning.
