In 1854 Reverend Bernard J. McQuaid set forth the outline behind his ideals for a young men's Catholic association. Similar to the existing Protestant-rooted Young Men's Christian Association which had arrived in the United States three years prior, McQuaid's ambitions could be seen as one of many concurrent attempts to embrace the idea of Muscular Christianity and general reform movements of the late nineteenth century. However, to do so, would do an injustice to the ground-breaking, innovative, and controversial, methods embraced by McQuaid. He was one of the first in the Unted States to propose that sports and games of chance were not 'evil'. Though his association eventually faltered under the weight of his lofty ambitions, he remains an underappreciated figure in the world of sport history. The Young Men's Catholic Association offered a legitimate challenge to the often unwelcome Protestant morality of the YMCA in urban immigrant communities in the late nineteenth century United States. This paper argues that McQuaid's recreation aims in Rochester developed as a reaction against the YMCA. McQuaid's association, the Young Men's Catholic Association, presented itself to the city's immigrant, Catholic, working-class population as an alternative to the Protestant-inspired, 'cult of strenuosity'. This paper is intended as a contribution to the study of science and religion in late modern Catholic societies. I explore the treatment of natural philosophy vis-à-vis religious (Roman Catholic) authority, the teaching of Biblical geology, and the use of natural theology in texts from Río de la Plata in the transition from late colonial to early independent times (1770-1815). After reviewing the assimilation of modern science into scholastic teaching and the articulation of reason and religious authority, the article considers the handling of the early history of the Earth in the theses of scholastic teachers and in the geological memoirs of the naturalist priest from Montevideo Dámaso Larrañaga. The core of the paper is devoted to the treatment of natural theology in Larrañaga's Diary of Natural History and in the speeches and documents of enlightened crown bureaucrats. The conclusion is reached that the harmonious character of the relationships between science and religion in this period and location harboured tensions (such as the blurred frontier between natural theology and natural religion) which could be accounted for in terms of the inherent inconsistencies in the programme of Catholic Enlightenment. This paper studies the strategies employed by Catholic and Protestant nonprofit hospitals in Germany and traces them back to the theological foundations of those religions. Using a unique data set, we find that Catholic nonprofit hospitals follow a strategy of horizontal diversification and maximization of the number of patients treated. By contrast, Protestant hospitals pursue a strategy of horizontal specialization and focus on vertical differentiation, putting in more sophisticated inputs and producing more complex services. These effects increase if the environment of a hospital gets more competitive. We present a model that rationalizes the strategic differences as a result of the difference between Catholic and Protestant values identified in the literature. We then test alternative explanations to the observed empirical differences and show that none of them is supported by the data. In today's competitive education market, where students and families are less inclined to loyalty and tradition, there are high expectations upon schools to respond rapidly and effectively to their potentially expanding communities' needs and wants. Constant pressure from rising competition for enrolments is absorbing increased resources and demanding new expertise. Significant to each school's response is an understanding of the "education consumers'" perceptions and behaviours in the decision making process of choosing a school. A longitudinal study investigating the nature of school choice and possible strategic responses is currently being undertaken across country and city areas of South Australia within Catholic communities. This paper describes the initial findings of the research, based on the perceptions and behaviours of parents/caregivers in choosing a child's school. Responding to aspects of the research respondents' feedback, as well as the contexts of the schools, it presents marketing and communication strategies to address the issues presented. Modelling itself on the organizational structure and the physical fitness culture of Catholic scouting, the xaveri movement in Rwanda developed within a climate which was highly susceptible to the development of deep racial and political divisions. Between 1954 and 1964, this Catholic youth organization was influential in the gestation of a Christian democratic culture which was one of the essential elements of the ideology behind the ‘Hutu revolution’. Covering the colonial to the postcolonial period and from the angle of the rise of the xaveri movement, this paper shows how the ‘Hutu revolution’ was a consequence of a liberation struggle from an imagined oppressor. This is in reference to colonial privileges attributed (until the end of the 1940s) to the Tutsi minority. However, and still from the perspective of the organization explored here, it seems that the model of the ‘civilised Tutsi’ targeted by the revolutionary Hutu movement was the essential referent of the more subconscious invention by republican leaders. The purpose of this article is to shed light on the more playful dimension of the Association catholique de la jeunesse canadienne-française (ACJC) by analysing activities of the Langevin Circle. The Langevin Circle was established in 1910 in the parish of La Nativité, in Hochelaga (Montreal, Quebec). While belonging to the very militant and combatant ACJC, its activities left some room for moments of leisure and fun. Its members expressed both a desire for ideological purity and a playful spirit that is characteristic of youth. In order to better highlight these two facets, the present paper focuses on the first ten years of the circle's existence (1910-1920), since our interpretations can rely on information garnered from the circle's magazine, La Semence, as well ACJC archives. This paper focuses on the socio-political ideas conveyed by Pax Romana in the Province of Quebec. Although this organization presented itself as a simple base of exchange between Catholics, the Federation of Fribourg did not limit itself to planning very general meetings in various places and promote an abstract dialogue between nations : it also disseminated a specific ideology. It offered a conceptual framework and a certain political orientation to those who participated in its activities. By revisiting its ideological background and identifying who were its most important promoters, this paper underlines the forms of exchange that structured Pax Romana from the inside and, by the same token, helps to locate its members on a particular map of the Catholic intellectual world from 1930 to 1950. A conference paper is presented on the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Catholic Social Movement. Topics discussed include commonalities and conflict between the Church and the Movement, the relationship between laicism and Catholicism, and the political and social activities of the Movement.

This article seeks to investigate the circumstances surrounding the birth of an international Catholic sports federation during the Belle Epoque (1890-1914). Covering the mix of political and religious tendencies and the progressive institutionalization of the world of sport, this history of the Union Internationale des Oeuvres Catholiques d'Education Physique (the International Union for Catholic Physical Education Work) relies on the archives of French, Belgian and Italian federations, all three actively involved in its formation. The reference corpus is completed by the Vatican's archives, regional and national press coverage of events such as the competitions, and specialised sports papers. We will show that despite the unity sought by the Catholics faced with the broad secularization of Western society, the birth of this federation is a result of circumstances favourable to this assembly which are specific to each of the member countries. The competition of Nancy, originally scheduled for 1909 and eventually held in 1911, is particularly indicative of the sometimes paradoxical issues at stake at the time it was founded. The author reflects on the passage of 2 Corinthians 5:14-21 and its relation to the theme "Impasse... and Beyond" for the meeting of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA) in 2009. He cites the sacraments that made Christians the so-called ambassadors for Christ and led them to His ministry of reconciliation. He discusses two theological papers which relate to the CTSA theme including one by Gary Macy on church history and another one by Constance FitzGerald on spiritual theology.

This paper identifies several impacts cultural transfers operated by Quebec missionaries from 1945 onwards had on their society and Church of origin, especially with respect to recent immigration. More specifically, it deals with the work achieved by the Missionaries of Africa (White Fathers) towards African immigrants through the Afrika Centre they found in Montreal in 1989. This case study exemplifies the dynamic relations that exist between Quebec missionary experience and the challenges posed to socio-ecclesial integration by a growing ethnocultural diversification of the Catholic population in Quebec. This paper examines the participation of the members of three catholic workers association -Círculo de Obreros de Córdoba, Asociación Artesanos de San José and Sociedad Católica Popular Italiana- to choose their authorities in Córdoba, Argentina during the first decades of the 20th Century. The study allows us to know that, besides, the indirect electoral system applied in the three cases, there are important differences which contributed in different ways to the appropriation of the concept and practice of political citizenship inaugurated in 1912. A diversity of electoral procedures can be found: from a very restricted political position more interested in religion and catholic rituals to one which granted all members the right to choose and be chosen. The article narrates the author's experience as an outsider and then inside the American Catholic Sociological Society (ACSS). As an outsider, the author felt that ACSS was intended primarily for persons at Catholic colleges. When the author joined the Catholic college as a college teacher, he joined ACSS. The author found an intensely personal warmth, fellowship, and good humor in the society.

The article presents information related to sociological interest. The tenth annual convention of the American Catholic Sociological Society will be held at Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois on December 27-29, 1948. Members of the Society interested in presenting papers before the convention should write the executive secretary. The ACSS committee on Constitutional amendments, pursuant to the directive of the Executive Council of the American Catholic Sociological Society (ACSS), reports the proposed addition of the following sentence to Article VI, Section 3 of the ACSS constitution: "The terms of office of the Book Review and Periodical Review editors of the official organ. The American Catholic Sociological Review, shall be for five years at the end of which time either may again be appointed." Twenty-six teachers came for one full week to discuss and work on the undergraduate sociology curriculum. An additional seventeen teachers took part in the workshop for one or more days. The workshop recommended to the executive council that a similar worship be arranged for next year and be devoted to some specific topic like the college course in the family, or introductory sociology, etc.

The article discusses the history of the Queensland Irish Association (QIA) in Queensland, Australia from 1898 through 1908, which consisted primary of Irish Catholics. Catholics' relations with Protestants in Australia are discussed. The QIA members' transnational relations with Ireland, including in regard to efforts towards Home Rule in the country, are also discussed.

The article focuses on the 1849 St. John's Anglican stone church in Kingston, Canada West. It states that the church contributes to the development of the Gothic revival ecclesiastical repertoire in the area. It also mentions the Anglican expansion in Kingston on April 8, 1844 following the appointment of St. George's Anglican Church's committee to raise funds in Great Britain and Canada for building two new churches which are St. James and St. Paul.

From the late nineteenth century onwards, concerns about men’s piety and the alleged incompatibility of masculinity and religion increasingly pervaded Catholic discourse. In order to counter that criticism, the Catholic clergy was willing to develop initiatives to improve and display men’s religious involvement. These Catholic initiatives have received little scholarly attention, and this article therefore focuses on the Leagues of the Sacred Heart for men, an all-male Catholic movement. More specifically, it examines the Belgian Leagues, one of the most successful branches of this male apostolate, and analyses the practices and discourses they adopted to attract a large membership. Focusing on this appeal to men, the article sheds new light on the importance of demonstrative Catholic masculinity and the uneasy fit between a hierarchically structured Church and the ideal of (male) democratic equality. The Society of Free Catholics was founded in 1914 by a small group of Unitarian ministers, who, inspired by Richard Barter, James Martineau, F. D. Maurice and the Catholic Modernists, sought to combine historic Catholic sacramental and devotional practice with theological freedom, and to unite all Christians in a Free Christian Church. The members included Anglicans, Nonconformists and a few Roman Catholics. The two main leaders of the society were J. M. Lloyd Thomas of the old Meeting, Birmingham, and W. E. In Part I of this article, we gave an outline of the devotional and musical life in the confraternity of the Archangel Raphael emphasizing how the most recent developments in areas such as poetics and music theory were absorbed and brought into a synthesis both with the current musical practices and with the understanding of the religious ceremonies as they are manifested in the preserved ricordi of the confraternity. In Part II, a laude manuscript (arch. mus. II, 55) of unknown provenance that was introduced in Part I will be discussed with respect to its relevance to the musical, aesthetic and religious sensibilities of the Archangel Raphael confraternity in the seventeenth century. In this article, we explore the devotional use of avant-garde music in a remarkable Florentine youth confraternity, theCompagnia dell’arcangelo Raffaello, in the early seventeenth century. We point to traits of the close relationship between the religious and musical practices in the confraternity, which shed light on the development of an aesthetic sensibility towards music. In the coming second part of the article, this will form the background for a discussion of the function and context of an unusual (probably seventeenth-century) manuscript of polyphoniclaudefrom the Cathedral archives in Florence, to our knowledge not previously discussed in scholarship. This article presents the author's views on Catholic Societies. The author believes that these perceptions about Catholic societies are unfounded myths and that, ironically, the Roman Catholic church is strongest where it is weakest and weakest where it is strongest. More specifically, the author develops and tests the proposition that the level of commitment of the average Catholic varies across nations inversely to the proportion of Catholics in the population. According to the religious economies are like commercial economies in that they consist of a market made up of a set of current and potential customers and a set of religious bodies seeking to serve that market. Moreover, as with commercial economies, the major variable of interest is their degree of regulation. Some religious economies are restricted by state-imposed monopolies. Some are virtually unregulated. To the degree that a religious economy is unregulated, the laws of supply and demand yield the deduction that the religious economy will be very pluralistic.

The article focuses on the formation of the National Catholic War Council in the U.S. in August 1917. The Council functioned as a highly effective medium in every phase of Catholic participation in the war effort through providing material assistance to chaplains serving with the troops. With its success, the Council's name was changed to the National Catholic Welfare Council (NCWC) to become the main organizational agency of the Church.

The article focuses on the formation of Roman Catholic minority in the U.S. between 1820 and 1860. American Catholics were divergent in political beliefs and in economic and social status before the Civil War. Dogmatic and disciplinary uniformity was established by the Provincial Council of Baltimore in 1829 to eliminate religious-related issues. It is inferred that the gradual Americanization of the masses of non-English Catholic an understandable process.
