In this work, an end‐to‐end framework is proposed to achieve multilingual automatic speech recognition (ASR) in air traffic control (ATC) systems. Considering the standard ATC procedure, a recurrent neural network (RNN) based framework is selected to mine the temporal dependencies among speech frames. Facing the distributed feature space caused by the radio transmission, a hybrid feature embedding block is designed to extract high‐level representations, in which multiple convolutional neural networks are designed to accommodate different frequency and temporal resolutions. The residual mechanism is performed on the RNN layers to improve the trainability and the convergence. To integrate the multilingual ASR into a single model and relieve the class imbalance, a special vocabulary is designed to unify the pronunciation of the vocabulary in Chinese and English, i.e., pronunciation‐oriented vocabulary. The proposed model is optimized by the connectionist temporal classification loss and is validated on a real‐world speech corpus (ATCSpeech). A character error rate of 4.4% and 5.9% is achieved for Chinese and English speech, respectively, which outperforms other popular approaches. In order to solve the intelligent evaluation of English writing, this paper proposes a method based on the English semantic neural network algorithm. This paper first briefly analyzes the research background of the English semantic analysis system, then expounds on the relevant technologies of the English distance similarity algorithm, semantic analysis intelligent algorithm structure, word analysis algorithm, sentence part of speech analysis algorithm, sentence semantic analysis algorithm, and neural network algorithm, and finally expounds the database and method implementation of the English semantic analysis system, so as to provide guarantee for the design of the English semantic analysis system. The experimental results show that the recognition accuracy of the BRF network for English characters can reach 96.35%, which is 7.79% higher than that of the BP network; the AUC of the BRF network reaches 0.89, which is closer to 1 compared with 0.72 of the BP network. The test results are in good agreement with the antinoise curve test results of the figure. It is proved that the English semantic neural network algorithm can effectively improve the accuracy of English translation and further improve the efficiency of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the prevalence of the Internet, a large number of users have participated in OSN (Online Social Networks), which has gradually made it the mainstream way for obtaining news or information from the Internet. However, with the rapid development of the Internet, a large amount of fake information has also been spread on the Internet. Therefore, fake information detection is of great significance at the moment. A multimodal fake information detection method is proposed in this article, which has adopted the textual and visual contents in the piece of information to make the judgments. The textual feature representation vector is firstly obtained through the pretraining of the Bert model, and then the visual feature representation is obtained through the pretraining of the VGG-19 model. From the proposed method, two MCBP (Multimodal Compact Bilinear Pooling) modules are adopted. The first MCBP module is adopted to obtain the visual feature representation vector with attention, and the second MCBP module is adopted to join the visual feature with the attention mechanism and the textual feature vector. Then, the joined vector can be adopted for fake information detection. The proposed method in this article is compared with two baseline methods. The experimental results on the Twitter and Weibo datasets have proved that the proposed method in this article is better than the EANN method and the SpotFake method in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. In the 2010s, a new phenomenon was spotted in the Seoul Metro. K‐pop fans began adorning subway stations with large ads congratulating their heroes—so‐called K‐pop idols—on their birthdays and other anniversaries. Not only have these fandom‐produced ads transformed the visual landscape of the Seoul Metro, they also invited novel spatial practices when fans, primarily young women, toured the ads to take photographs of and with them. Based on ethnographic observations, this article explores how fandom ads and fans visiting them make the Seoul Metro social and public in new ways. Drawing on Henri Lefebvre's theory of the production of space, the article frames fans' ads themselves and engagements they invite as assertions of the "right to the city," and relates them to spatial interventions that reclaim urban spaces based on symbolic—not legal—ownership, such as murals and graffiti. The article argues that K‐pop idol ads recapture the Seoul Metro from domination by commercial advertisers' interests and appropriate it as a space of fandom, particularly female fandom. It also contends that this reorganization of space carries implications for a broader reclamation of subway surfaces as urban resources. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Community‐based question answering websites have attracted more and more scholars and developers to discuss domain knowledge and software development. In this article, we focus on the GIS section of the Stack Exchange website and develop a novel approach, QA4GIS, a deep learning‐based system for question answering tasks with a deep neural network (DNN) model to extract the representation of the query–API document pair. We use the LambdaMART model to rerank the candidate API documents. We begin with an empirical analysis of the questions and answers, demonstrating that API documents could answer 52.93% of the questions. Then we evaluate QA4GIS by comparing it with 10 other baselines. The experiment results show that QA4GIS can improve 21.39% on the MAP score and 22.34% on the MRR score compared with the best baseline SIF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Leveraging suppliers and customers, in order to build closer inter‐organisational ties, is often highlighted as a competitive priority in global supply chains (SCs). The creation of relational capital (RC) within a firm is a well‐researched concept; however, few studies investigated the customer/supplier leveraging mechanisms that build relational capital in SCs. In this study, we propose a model to examine the effects of supplier and customer leveraging on the creation of RC, which impacts innovation performance (IP). The empirical data for this study were drawn from the fifth round of the Global Manufacturing Research Group survey project (data collected from 557 manufacturing plants, in 10 countries). The hypotheses were empirically tested using structural equation modelling. The findings highlight the importance of SC leveraging towards building RC, in order to enhance innovation performance. The results show that supplier and customer leveraging positively impact the RC. In turn, the RC has a significant impact on IP. We found that the effect of SC leveraging directly and indirectly (partial mediated by RC) associates with the innovation performance. These findings are underpinned by the relational view, which argues that the relationships between firms are an important unit of analysis for understanding competitive advantage. Recent research documents increasing unhappiness (even depression) among Chinese adults despite the rapid economic growth in China. This paper explains this discrepancy by exploring the relationship between relative economic status and mental health (measured by Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale score) among the middle‐aged and elderly in China. In measuring relative economic status, we use five reference groups for comparison (i.e., relatives, colleagues, schoolmates, neighbors or villagers, and people in the same city or county). Using data from 2013 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, we find that individuals with relatively lower economic status are more likely to be mentally depressed. The relationship differs across reference groups for comparisons, with the larger impacts seen from the comparison against acquaintances, while the impact of comparison to regional average is the smallest despite its frequent use in the literature. The relative economic status–mental health gradient is asymmetric; that is, the negative impact of worse relative economic status is comparatively larger and more significant than the positive impact of better relative economic status. Our results imply that reducing wealth gaps within groups of similar backgrounds can be more effective in improving people's mental health than a general reduction of wealth inequality within the population. Total Quality Management (TQM) has become, according to one source, 'as pervasive a part of business thinking as quarterly financial results,' and yet TQM's role as a strategic resource remains virtually unexamined in strategic management research. Drawing on the resource approach and other theoretical perspectives, this article examines TQM as a potential source of sustainable competitive advantage, reviews existing empirical evidence, and reports findings from a new empirical study of TQM's performance consequences. The findings suggest that most features generally associated with TQM--such as quality training, process improvement, and benchmarking--do not generally produce advantage, but that certain tacit, behavioral, imperfectly imitable features--such as open culture, employee empowerment, and executive commitment--can produce advantage. The author concludes that these tacit resources, and not TQM tools and techniques, drive TQM success, and that organizations that acquire them can outperform competitors with or without the accompanying TQM ideology. The article presents a method for analyzing narrative accounting disclosures of financial information. The authors use a computer program called WORDS to provide a content analysis of the narrative elements of financial statements by looking at word frequency. The program catalogs the words into various classifications and then creates a statistical analysis of the words. The WORDS program was used to analyze annual report disclosures from companies that may or may not have released misleading financial information.

Abstract: We investigate whether infant‐directed speech (IDS) could facilitate word form learning when compared to adult‐directed speech (ADS). To study this, we examine the distribution of word forms at two levels, acoustic and phonological, using a large database of spontaneous speech in Japanese. At the acoustic level we show that, as has been documented before for phonemes, the realizations of words are more variable and less discriminable in IDS than in ADS. At the phonological level, we find an effect in the opposite direction: The IDS lexicon contains more distinctive words (such as onomatopoeias) than the ADS counterpart. Combining the acoustic and phonological metrics together in a global discriminability score reveals that the bigger separation of lexical categories in the phonological space does not compensate for the opposite effect observed at the acoustic level. As a result, IDS word forms are still globally less discriminable than ADS word forms, even though the effect is numerically small. We discuss the implication of these findings for the view that the functional role of IDS is to improve language learnability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Memorizing English vocabulary is often considered uninteresting, and a lack of motivation exists during learning activities. Moreover, most vocabulary practice systems automatically select words from articles and do not provide integrated model methods for students. Therefore, this study constructed a mobile game‐based English vocabulary practice system, which imitates the popular block elimination game and combines test items of article, difficulty, and teacher model in accordance with curriculum objectives and demands. The participants were first‐year students and classified into traditional group (Group T) and game‐based group (Group G), and learning effectiveness and motivation were analysed in this study. According to statistical analysis results, students who used the game‐based vocabulary practice system, which could captivate their attention and interest, had higher learning effectiveness and provided positive feedback of learning motivation. Furthermore, English teachers could select teaching materials that are consistent with the features, knowledge, and cultural background of learners to improve the relevance dimension of learning motivation. The article examines the works of Christine Di Stefano, Heather Brown, Hillary Rose, and Karl Marx on Marxism and feminism and highlights the possibility of transitioning to feminism from historical materialism. Di Stefano rejects the assumption that 19th century Marxism handle gender discrimination. Rose believes that an updated Marxism type can achieve feminist goals. Brown thinks that Marx has a strong foundationalist views on gender.

Grapheme-colour synaesthesia is characterized by conscious and consistent associations between letters and colours, or between numbers and colours (e.g., synaesthetes might see A as red, 7 as green). Our study explored the development of this condition in a group of randomly sampled child synaesthetes. Two previous studies (Simner & Bain, 2013, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 7, 603; Simner, Harrold, Creed, Monro, & Foulkes, 2009, Brain, 132, 57) had screened over 600 primary school children to find the first randomly sampled cohort of child synaesthetes. In this study, we evaluate this cohort to ask whether their synaesthesia is associated with a particular cognitive profile of strengths and/or weaknesses. We tested our child synaesthetes at age 10-11 years in a series of cognitive tests, in comparison with matched controls and baseline norms. One previous study (Green & Goswami, 2008, Cognition, 106, 463) had suggested that child synaesthetes might perform differently to non-synaesthetes in such tasks, although those participants may have been a special type of population independent of their synaesthesia. In our own study of randomly sampled child synaesthetes, we found no significant advantages or disadvantages in a receptive vocabulary test and a memory matrix task. However, we found that synaesthetes demonstrated above-average performance in a processing-speed task and a near-significant advantage in a letter-span task (i.e., memory/recall task of letters). Our findings point to advantages for synaesthetes that go beyond those expected from enhanced coding accounts and we present the first picture of the broader cognitive profile of a randomly sampled population of child synaesthetes. Although modern search systems require minimal skill for meeting simple information needs, most systems provide weak support for gaining advanced skill; hence, the goal of designing systems that guide searchers in developing expertise. Essential to developing such systems are a description of expert search behavior and an understanding of how it may be acquired. The present study contributes a detailed analysis of the query behavior of 10 students as they completed assigned exercises during a semester-long course on expert search. Detailed query logs were coded for three dimensions of query expression: the information structure searched, the type of query term used, and intent of the query with respect to specificity. Patterns of query formulation were found to evidence a progression of instruction, suggesting that the students gained knowledge of fundamental system-independent constructs that underlie expert search, and that domain-independent search expertise may be defined as the ability to use these constructs. He explores the basic ontology of human civilization and the requirements for the minimal apparatus necessary to explain human social ontology. He also examines the important role of language in the construction and the constitution of social reality.

Accountability is a principle for organizing relations between rulers and ruled, and making public officials accountable is a democratic achievement. There are, however, competing claims about what is involved in demanding, rendering, assessing, and responding to accounts; what are effective accountability institutions; and how accountability regimes emerge and change. This article provides a frame for thinking about institutional aspects of accountability regimes and their cognitive, normative, and power foundations. A distinction is made between accountability within an established regime with stable power relations and role expectations and accountability as (re)structuring processes in less institutionalized contexts and in transformation periods. A huge literature is concerned with the first issue. There is less attention to accountability as (re)structuring processes. The article, therefore, calls attention to how democracies search for, and struggle over, what are legitimate accountability regimes and political orders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the process through which children in prison with their imprisoned parent have become a target of social concern in Finland. It is asked how the new social problem of 'children in prison' has been constructed. The data consist of relevant parts of the legislation and official documents. Three phases of social problem construction are named: (i) Children in prison as a practical and private matter; (ii) intense debate, problem formulation and developing practices and (iii) a public institutionalised practice. The position of children changed from one of invisibility to the target of protection. On the basis of children's rights, children in prison became understood as a group of children who are in need of child protection services. In September 2010, eight members of the public were killed when a gas transmission pipeline ruptured at San Bruno, California. This article describes the causes of this serious organizational failure with a view to learning by other organizations that operate hazardous facilities. The rupture occurred when a longitudinal seam weld failed. The weld had been poorly made at the time the pipeline was fabricated and installed in 1956. The line had not been inspected or tested since that time. While the details are specific to the case at hand, organizational lessons are valid for other organizations operating complex sociotechnical systems that face the problem of sleeping or latent faults that can remain dormant for many years. This analysis focuses on the organizational arrangements that led to such ineffective integrity management, in particular how the potential for an event such as the one that occurred was systematically ignored by the operating company for many years. ABSTRACT Opponents of physician-assisted suicide (PAS) maintain that physician withdrawal-of-life-sustaining-treatment cannot be morally equated to voluntary active euthanasia. PAS opponents generally distinguish these two kinds of act by positing a possible moral distinction between killing and allowing-to-die, ceteris paribus. While that distinction continues to be widely accepted in the public discourse, it has been more controversial among philosophers. Some ethicist PAS advocates are so certain that the distinction is invalid that they describe PAS opponents who hold to the distinction as in the grip of 'moral fictions'. The author contends that such a diagnosis is too hasty. The possibility of a moral distinction between active euthanasia and allowing-to-die has not been closed off by the argumentative strategies employed by these PAS advocates, including the contrasting cases strategy and the assimilation of doing and allowing to a common sense notion of causation. The philosophical debate over the doing/allowing distinction remains inconclusive, but physicians and others who rely upon that distinction in thinking about the ethics of end-of-life care need not give up on it in response to these arguments. Despite arguments for more fully including informational text in early childhood classrooms, research suggests that young children's exposure to the genre is quite limited. This article focuses on the informational books that children do encounter, specifically through read-alouds, and describes the narrow focus of those books. Informational read-alouds are overwhelmingly on topics of life science. The authors advocate for both increasing and broadening the informational books read aloud to young children and provide recommendations for ensuring productive read-aloud experiences. The article discusses science textbooks that are used in primary education. The experiences of four primary school teachers at the James Weldon Johnson Leadership Academy in East Harlem, New York City are examined in terms of how they teach science. The benefits of using textbook-based instruction are examined as are the challenges that elementary school children face in trying to learn science from a book, including reading technical language. It is noted that there is an interest in increasing content area instruction with nonfiction books in the lower elementary grades. Teaching methods for helping students to deal with technical vocabulary in their textbooks include context clues and rereading. Other topics include teacher-student communication, reading strategies, the way information is presented in textbooks, and the style of writing in nonfiction textbooks.

Community radio and hip-hop constitute sociopolitical agency in the (sub)urban, working-class neighborhoods of São Paulo. Practitioners and performers have defined themselves, in part, by their success in 'conquering space' and, in turn, have created a productive public sphere. Members of both groups consistently describe what they do as public exchange, a viable and visible option on the part of the disenfranchised to engage in a Habermasian ideal sphere of civic agency. In this article, I argue that it is this epistemology of knowledge as exchange coupled with a sociogeographical presence that make hip-hop and community radio provocative to local residents and periodically irritating to state authorities.
