We use digital elevation models (DEMs) and ICESat‐2 data to study the filling and outflow from a large subglacial lake under Manson Icefield in the Canadian Arctic. When full, the lake is ∼17 × 3 km with an area of 52 km2. Early in 2021 the ice surface over the center of the lake sank by >140 m implying a subglacial outburst flood of ∼4 km3. Rapid outflow occurred over ∼30 days at an average rate of ∼1,500 m3s−1 resulting in the formation of a single ∼15 km subglacial outflow path detectable from post‐outflow surface depression. The shape of the surface depression, 600–800 m wide by 2–4 m deep, reflects the shape of the subglacial channel prior to closure. Downstream ice movement appears unaffected by the outflow. After outflow ends the surface depression persisted over weeks, apparently dependent on the difference between water and overburden pressures. These results help in understanding the ways in which the presence, movement, and volume of water beneath glaciers influence ice movement and climate related glacial ice loss. This study discusses the timing and maximum flood level of the Nedre Glomsjø outburst flood, Norway, based on sediment records retrieved from 15 bog and lake basins located close to the purported maximum flooded level. The sediment records in 12 of the basins consist of a distinct light‐coloured silty bed that is correlated to the outburst‐flood‐deposited 'Romerike Silt Bed' identified elsewhere in the region. The silt bed is recorded in basins up to a certain elevation and is absent above this level. The new maximum flood level inferred from the basin sediment records exceeds the established landform‐induced palaeostage indicators by 5–10 m. The data indicate a higher maximum flood level and larger inundation area than previously suggested and highlight the importance of acquiring a wide range of geological data when reconstructing palaeofloods. Radiocarbon dates of terrestrial macrofossils found stratigraphically above and below the Romerike Silt Bed suggest that the glacial lake Nedre Glomsjø outburst flood occurred between 10.5 and 10.3 cal. ka BP. The new and well‐constrained timing of the outburst flood is beneficial for reconstructing regional deglaciation and provides a precise age for the Romerike Silt Bed chronostratigraphical marker, which is of value for studies in SE Norway and adjacent regions. Reconstruction of the catastrophic drainage following the Millennium Eruption (ME) of Changbaishan‐Tianchi volcano in 946 ± 20 CE is of great significance, as it contributes to improving the regional maximum flood record and develop rare flood risk analysis. However, limited knowledge exists concerning the failure mode, magnitude, and transport processes of the outburst flooding. In this work, we present a whole system model that describes the paleohydrology of catastrophic drainage using geological records along the downstream valley. The model encompasses the crater lake dynamics, an approximation of the breach erosion process and flood propagation downstream. The boulder competence method was used to constrain by reasonable flow parameters, while mitigating the uncertainty caused by the ambiguous geological paleostage indicators. Paleohydrologic analysis indicates that at least 1 km3 of water was released from the caldera, with the vertical breach erosion rates as high as 34 m/hr. Volcanic activity during the ME II may have directly contributed to triggering of the flood event. The local hydrodynamic response of the downstream riverbed captures the dynamic migration patterns of sediments across spatio‐temporal scales, offering a comprehensive interpretation of the specific scouring surfaces observed in the geological profile. The analysis of simulated inundation boundaries reveals that not all recorded inundations can be attributed to the crater lake outburst event. Reconstructions of megafloods based on downstream constraints on flood stage, velocity and discharge can help to infer and constrain the dynamics of dam failure mechanisms, and also contribute to our understanding of these complex paleohydrologic events. We describe and model the evolution of a recent landslide, tsunami, outburst flood, and sediment plume in the southern Coast Mountains, British Columbia, Canada. On November 28, 2020, about 18 million m3 of rock descended 1,000 m from a steep valley wall and traveled across the toe of a glacier before entering a 0.6 km2 glacier lake and producing >100‐m high run‐up. Water overtopped the lake outlet and scoured a 10‐km long channel before depositing debris on a 2‐km2 fan below the lake outlet. Floodwater, organic debris, and fine sediment entered a fjord where it produced a 60+km long sediment plume and altered turbidity, water temperature, and water chemistry for weeks. The outburst flood destroyed forest and salmon spawning habitat. Physically based models of the landslide, tsunami, and flood provide real‐time simulations of the event and can improve understanding of similar hazard cascades and the risk they pose. Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are sudden, and often hazardous, floods occurring upon the failure of a glacial lake dam or moraine. A GLOF occurred at Sulzenau Lake (Tyrol, Austria) in August 2017 due to a partial moraine and dam failure, damaging nearby infrastructure. Due to the ongoing retreat of Sulzenau Glacier, the areal extent, depth, water volume, and shoreline configuration of Sulzenau Lake fluctuate over both short‐ and long‐term periods. Here, we used remote sensing data to create a detailed geomorphological overview of the valley, analyse the lake's evolution since 2009, and characterize the conditions leading to the 2017 dam failure. Using optical remote sensing imagery, we generated detailed pre‐ and post‐event geomorphological maps of Sulzenau Lake and areas impacted by the GLOF to characterize erosional and depositional zones. We employed the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and mapped the post‐event boulder distribution. Based on multi‐temporal mapping, we calculated water volumes, analysed changes in lake and glacier surfaces since 1970, and compared them with ERA‐5 meteorological data. Lake growth was primarily due to rising temperatures and glacier retreat. In 2017, both precipitation and air temperatures in the Sulzenau Valley exceeded the 1991–2021 averages, with precipitation 14.8% higher and air temperatures 0.35°C above the 30‐year mean. Ice velocities for Sulzenau Glacier reached 170 m/year during 2015–2022. By modelling flow conditions required for observed boulder movements during the GLOF, we constrained the peak discharge to 150–200 m3/s. No significant pre‐2017 GLOF activity or meteorological anomalies were detected. Accordingly, we attribute the GLOF and dam failure to an increased meltwater flux and increased precipitation, possibly augmented by subglacial/englacial lake drainage. Lakes set in arctic permafrost landscapes can be susceptible to rapid drainage and downstream flood generation. Of many thousands of lakes in northern Alaska, hundreds have been identified as having high drainage potential directly to river systems and 18 such drainage events have been documented since 1955. In 2018 we began monitoring a large lake with high drainage potential as part of a long‐term hydrological observation network designed to evaluate impacts of land use and climate change. In early June 2022, surface water was observed flowing over a 30‐m wide bluff, with active headward erosion of ice‐rich permafrost soils apparent by late June. This overflow point breached rapidly in early July, draining almost the entire lake within 12 h and generating a 191 m3/s flood to a downstream creek. Water level and turbidity sensors and time‐lapse cameras captured this rapid lake‐drainage event at high resolution. A wind‐driven surface seiche and warming waters following ice‐out helped trigger the initial thermomechanical breach. We estimate at least 600 MT of lake sediment was eroded, mobilized, and transported downstream. A flood wave peaking at 42 m3/s arrived 14 h after the initial breach at a river gauge 9‐km downstream. Comparing this event with three other quantified arctic lake‐drainage floods suggests that lake surface area coupled with drainage gradient height can predict outburst flood magnitude. Using this relationship we estimated future flood hazards from the 146 lakes in the Arctic Coastal Plain of northern Alaska (ACP) with high drainage potential, of which 20% are expected to generate outburst floods exceeding 100 m3/s to downstream rivers. This fortunate and detailed drainage‐event observation adds to a growing body of research on the impact of lakes on arctic hydrology, hazard forecasting in a region with an increasing human footprint, and broader processes of landscape evolution in arctic lowlands. Glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) are a severe threat to communities in the Himalayas; however, GLOF mitigation strategies have been implemented for only a few lakes, and future changes in hazard are rarely considered. Here, we present a comprehensive assessment of current and future GLOF hazard for Gepang Gath Lake, Western Himalaya, considering rock and/or ice avalanches cascading into the lake. We consider ground surface temperature and topography to define avalanche source zones located in areas of potentially degrading permafrost. GLOF process chains in current and future scenarios, also considering engineered lake lowering of 10 and 30 m, were evaluated. Here, varied avalanche impact waves, erosion patterns, debris flow hydraulics, and GLOF impacts at Sissu village, under 18 different scenarios were assessed. Authors demonstrated that a larger future lake does not necessarily produce larger GLOF events in Sissu, depending, among other factors, on the location from where the triggering avalanche initiates and strikes the lake. For the largest scenarios, 10 m of lowering reduces the high‐intensity zone by 54% and 63% for the current and future scenarios, respectively, but has little effect on the medium‐intensity flood zone. Even with 30 m of lake lowering, the Sissu helipad falls in the high‐intensity zone under all moderate‐to‐large scenarios, with severe implications for evacuations and other emergency response actions. The approach can be extended to other glacial lakes to demonstrate the efficiency of lake lowering as an option for GLOF mitigation and enable a robust GLOF hazard and risk assessment. The existence of warming permafrost (frozen ground) in the surrounding steep slopes of the lake makes it susceptible to failure. Assessment of GLOF process chains including avalanche impact on the lake, frontal dam breaching, and downstream impact shows that the nearest settlement at Sissu is exposed to present and future GLOFs. We further evaluated mitigation options, including lake level lowering by 10 and 30 m, to evaluate the changes in the GLOF intensities downstream of the lake. It is seen that there is a significant reduction in the GLOF impact downstream when the lake levels are lowered, but the risk from very large events is not eliminated. Glacial lake outburst floods occurred frequently during the last deglaciation of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Within the Interior Plains, these floods carved large spillway systems; however, due to a lack of abundant sediment, deposits within prairie spillways are rarely preserved. Here, we present geomorphic and sedimentary evidence and hydraulic modelling of the eastern Beaver River Spillway, formed by the catastrophic drainage of the ice‐dammed glacial Lake Algar, in north central Alberta. During this flood, coarse‐grained sediment eroded from local till formed large pendant bars. Within the first ~50 km of the spillway (Reach 1), pendant bars contain downstream orientated foresets overlain by horizontally bedded coarser gravels. The remaining pendant bars (Reach 2), present downflow of a moraine barrier, differ, comprising massive, matrix‐supported, inversely graded gravels capped by a boulder layer. We use a HEC‐GeoRAS/HEC‐RAS system in conjunction with palaeostage indicators to estimate the steady‐state water surface elevation. Modelling results show that peak discharge within Reach 1 of the eastern Beaver River Spillway was approximately 14 000–21 000 m3 s−1. For Reach 2, 30 km downstream, the peak discharge was estimated at 23 000–40 000 m3 s−1 (nbulked 18 000–26 000 m3 s−1). The downstream discharge increase, consistent with the sedimentary change in pendant bar deposits, is attributed to sediment bulking of the flood flow. This provides the opportunity to observe a range of flow conditions, and associated sedimentology, from a single flood event. The reconstructed flow conditions, coupled with lake volume estimates from the ponding above the moraine barrier suggest a minimum flow duration of 3–5 days. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Indian Himalayas are home to numerous glacial lakes, which can pose serious threat to downstream communities and lead to catastrophic socioeconomic disasters in case of a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). This study first identified 329 glacial lakes of size greater than 0.05 km2 in the Indian Himalayas, and then a remote sensing‐based hazard and risk assessment was performed on these lakes. Different factors such as avalanche, rockfall, upstream GLOF, lake expansion, identification of the presence of ice cores, and assessment of the stability of moraine were considered for the hazard modeling. Further, a stochastic inundation model was applied to quantify the potential number of buildings, bridges, and hydropower systems that could be inundated by GLOF in each lake. Finally, the hazard parameters and downstream impact were collectively considered to determine the risk linked with each lake. A total of 23 lakes were identified as very high risk lakes and 50 as high‐risk lakes. The potential flood volumes associated with various triggering mechanisms were also measured and were used to identify the lakes with the most considerable risk, such as Shakho Cho and Khangchung Tso. This study is anticipated to support stakeholders and decision‐makers in identifying critical glacial lakes and make well‐informed decisions related to future modeling efforts, field studies, and risk mitigation measures. The effects of glacier ice block grounding on the morphology and sedimentology of proglacial fluvial outwash were examined daring a glacier nutburst flood or jökulhlaup, near Søndre Strømfjord, west Greenland. Observations made during and after the 1987 jökulhlaup both on the surface of an ice contact delta and within a confined valley sandur plain provided information about the formation of ice block obstacle marks and the significance of them bedforms for sandur morphology and sedimentology. Flow directions determined from obstacle mark morphology have been used successfully to chart flow direction changes on the falling limb of the jökulhlaup. Maximum flow depths for scour around stranded ice blocks may be given by 0.5-0.9 times the diameter of the ice block, as estimated from the depth of scour, the height of the obstacle shadow or the extent of ice block meltout sediments. Minimum flow depths can be represented by the height of the obstacle shadow above the mean bed level. The internal composition of the shadow indicates the ability of the flow to transport various sizes of material into the ice of obstacles. Ice block obstacle marks within the distal portion of the sandur initiated waning stage channel change. Proximal and lateral erosion around stranded ice blocks extended downstream from the ice block, forming chute channels which then captured waning stage flows, resulting in significant bar incision with associated deposition of lobate or deltaic deposits. It is suggested that ice block obstacle marks are important in terms of channel morphology, channel morphological change and their usefulness as palaeohydrological indicators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Changing high‐mountain environments are characterized by destabilizing ice, rock or debris slopes connected to evolving glacial lakes. Such configurations may lead to potentially devastating sequences of mass movements (process chains or cascades). Computer simulations are supposed to assist in anticipating the possible consequences of such phenomena in order to reduce the losses. The present study explores the potential of the novel computational tool r.avaflow for simulating complex process chains. r.avaflow employs an enhanced version of the Pudasaini ( ) general two‐phase mass flow model, allowing consideration of the interactions between solid and fluid components of the flow. We back‐calculate an event that occurred in 2012 when a landslide from a moraine slope triggered a multi‐lake outburst flood in the Artizón and Santa Cruz valleys, Cordillera Blanca, Peru, involving four lakes and a substantial amount of entrained debris along the path. The documented and reconstructed flow patterns are reproduced in a largely satisfactory way in the sense of empirical adequacy. However, small variations in the uncertain parameters can fundamentally influence the behaviour of the process chain through threshold effects and positive feedbacks. Forward simulations of possible future cascading events will rely on more comprehensive case and parameter studies, but particularly on the development of appropriate strategies for decision‐making based on uncertain simulation results. © 2017 The Authors. In the spring of 1818, ice avalanches from the Giétro Glacier created an ice dam, which in turn formed a glacial lake in the Drance Valley (Canton of Valais, Switzerland). Today, its maximum volume is estimated to have been 25×106 m3. Cantonal authorities commissioned an engineer named Ignaz Venetz to mitigate the risk of the ice dam's failure. He supervised the construction of a tunnel through which a large volume of water was drained as the lake rose (9×106 m3 according to his estimates and 11×106 m3 according to our model). After 2.5 days of slow drainage, the ice dam failed on 16 June 1818 and caused major flooding in the Drance Valley up to 40 km downstream, resulting in about 40 deaths. Venetz's lake monitoring notes, numerous testimonies gathered in the disaster's aftermath, and our field survey have made it possible to collect a wealth of information on this event, which is one of the world's major documented glacial lake outburst floods. Reconstructing major outburst floods remains challenging because not only do they involve enormous volumes of water spreading over long distances but they are also associated with additional physical processes such as massive erosion; intense transport of ice, sediment, and debris; and damage to vegetation and buildings. This paper attempts to reconstruct the 1818 Giétro flood by focusing on its water component. We develop a simple model to estimate the initial hydrograph during the slow drainage and failure phases. The flood's features are deduced by solving the shallow‐water equations numerically. The computational framework involves six free parameters, of which five are constrained by physical considerations. Using iterative manual parameter adjustments, we matched the numerical simulations to the historical data. We found that the peak discharge was close to 14,500 m3/s, the flood's front velocity was about 6 m/s, and flow depth varied considerably along the River Drance's bed (from 30 m just downstream of the ice dam to 2 m on the alluvial fan, 24 km west of the dam). To achieve a good agreement between computations and historical data, we had to select a high value for the Manning friction coefficient n (with n as large as 0.08 s/m1/3). As the Drance Valley is narrow, high flow resistance caused the flood's leading edge to behave like a plug, moving at a fairly constant velocity, with little dependence on what happened behind it. This result may explain why a simple flood routing model is able to reproduce the flood's features, because in an Alpine valley, a lateral spreading of the water volume is limited. Efficient computational tools are required for analyzing flood risk. Testing these tools is an important step toward ensuring their reliability and performance. Knowledge of major historical floods makes it possible, in principle, to benchmark models, but because historical data are often incomplete and fraught with potential inaccuracies, validation is seldom satisfactory. Here we present one of the few major historical floods for which information on flood initiation and propagation is available and detailed: the Giétro flood. This flood occurred in June 1818 and devastated the Drance Valley in Switzerland. In the spring of that year, ice avalanches blocked the valley floor and formed a glacial lake, whose volume is today estimated at 25×106 m3. The local authorities initiated protection works: A tunnel was drilled through the ice dam, and about half of the stored water volume was drained in 2.5 days. On 16 June 1818, the dam failed suddenly because of significant erosion at its base; this caused a major flood. This paper presents a numerical model for estimating flow rates, velocities, and depths during the dam drainage and flood flow phases. The numerical results agree well with historical data. The flood reconstruction shows that relatively simple models can be used to estimate the effects of a major flood with good accuracy. The article d evaluates, using hydrodynamic models for better understanding, the Tam Pokhari glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) in the Mount Everest region of Nepal in 1998. It states that the flood wave was studied under boundary conditions that are both rigid and erodible. Furthermore, the results suggests that a careful evaluation of sedimentology, topography, and other geo-hazard conditions should be made before making control measures for GLOFs in the area.

Polythermal glaciers can trap considerable volumes of liquid water with the potential to generate devastating outburst floods. This study aims to identify water‐filled subglacial reservoirs from ambient seismic noise collected by moderate‐cost surveys. The horizontal‐to‐vertical spectral ratio technique is highly sensitive to impedance contrasts at interfaces, thus commonly used to estimate glacier thickness. Here, we focus on the inverse ratio, that is, the V/H spectral ratio (VHSR), whose high values indicate a low impedance volume beneath the surface, suggesting subglacial cavities. We analyze VHSR peaks from a seismic array of 60 nodes installed on the Tête‐Rousse Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, French Alps); data were gathered over 15 days. Mapping the VHSR amplitude over the free surface reveals the main cavity locations and the basal areas affected by melting within the glacier. Results obtained in the field are supported by a conceptual model based on 3D finite‐element simulations. Plain Language Summary: Considerable volumes of liquid water may be trapped within cavities in polythermal glaciers. If these cavities rupture, the resulting outburst flood has the potential to cause devastation in populated mountain areas. With the aim of testing methods to locate such cavities, we installed 60 small 3‐component seismic sensors on the Tête‐Rousse Glacier (Mont Blanc massif, French Alps), which is known to contain such cavities. We used these sensors to test a detection method based on ambient seismic noise. For 3 weeks, the sensors recorded vibrations within the glacier. On a glacier without cavities, these vibrations ought to be predominantly in the horizontal direction. In the presence of a cavity, we expect the ice above the cavity to vibrate mostly vertically—like a bridge. In this paper, we highlight areas on the glacier where vertical vibrations were stronger than horizontal vibrations. These areas fit well with the locations of the main known cavities in this glacier, and with areas affected by basal melting. The resolution and accuracy of digital elevation models (DEMs) can affect the hydraulic simulation results for predicting the effects of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). However, for the Tibetan Plateau, high-quality DEM data are often not available, leaving researchers with near-global, freely available DEMs, such as the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer Global Digital Elevation Model (ASTER GDEM) and the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data (SRTM) for hydraulic modelling. This study explores the suitability of these two freely available DEMs for hydraulic modelling of GLOFs. Our study focused on the flood plain of a potentially dangerous glacial lake in southeastern Tibet, to evaluate the elevation accuracy of ASTER GDEM and SRTM, and their suitability for hydraulic modelling of GLOFs. The elevation accuracies of ASTER GDEM and SRTM were first validated against field global position system (GPS) survey points, and then evaluated with reference to the relatively high precision of 1:50 000 scale DEM (DEM5) constructed from aerial photography. Moreover, the DEM5, ASTER GDEM and SRTM were used as basic topographic data to simulate peak discharge propagation, as well as flood inundation extent and depth in the Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System one-dimensional hydraulic model. Results of the three DEM predictions were compared to evaluate the suitability of ASTER GDEM and SRTM for GLOF hydraulic modelling. Comparisons of ASTER GDEM and SRTM each with DEM5 in the flood plain area show root-mean-square errors between the former two as ± 15·4 m and between the latter two as ± 13·5 m. Although SRTM overestimates and ASTER GDEM underestimates valley floor elevations, both DEMs can be used to extract the elevations of required geometric data, i.e. stream centre lines, bank lines and cross sections, for flood modelling. However, small errors still exist in the cross sections that may influence the propagation of peak discharge. The flood inundation extent and mean water depths derived from ASTER GDEM predictions are only 2·2% larger and 2·3-m deeper than that of the DEM5 predictions, whereas the SRTM yields a flood zone extent 6·8% larger than the DEM5 prediction and a mean water depth 2·4-m shallower than the DEM5 prediction. Tectonically active mountain regions such as Southwestern China are frequently hit by catastrophic floods caused by the breach of landslide dams. However, how these extreme events influence the morphodynamics of bedrock‐alluvial rivers is not well understood. More specifically, during a landslide dam outburst flood, bedrock can be eroded by intensive transport of sediment (i.e., tools effect), but can also be buried under thick alluvial cover (i.e., cover effect). Here, we implement the MRSAA‐c (Corrected Macro‐Roughness‐based Saltation‐Abrasion‐Alluviation) model to simulate the morphodynamics of bedrock‐alluvial rivers subject to landslide dam outburst flood(s). For a single dam breach event, the evolution of a bedrock‐alluvial river shows different characteristics at different time scales. At flood time scale (within one day), bedrock is eroded by about 10 mm. The landslide deposit then mainly provides a cover effect in the decadal‐century scale, which leads to a net uplift of the bedrock underneath, and thus the formation of a bedrock "bump." The bedrock profile returns to its initial equilibrium state at a millennial time scale, after the bedrock bump migrates upstream beyond the inlet. When subject to repeated dam breach events, the bedrock‐alluvial river can reach a dynamic equilibrium after sufficient time (tens of thousands of years). The equilibrium is characterized by sharply increased bedrock slope around the dam site, and gently decreased slope downstream. The impact of dam breach events is constrained within a scale of hundreds of kilometers, indicating the existence of a sedimentograph boundary layer. Surface hazards can form hazard cascades which expand their reach. However, our understanding of their complex dynamics and ability to mitigate their impacts remain limited. In 2018, two landslides dammed the Jinsha River in the Tibetan plateau and formed landslide‐dammed lakes. Subsequent dam breaches prompted the evacuation of >120,000 people. An early warning system for floods using a regional seismic network has been proposed on the basis of catastrophic floods having been detected ∼100 km away, with seismic energy proportional to discharge. Surprisingly, we find that this catastrophic outburst flood was undetectable beyond a few kilometers, with peak seismic energy preceding peak discharge. We propose that river channel stability also controls seismic energy generation and should be considered for accurate monitoring of catastrophic floods. In contrast, we find that the various processes during dam breach can be well‐characterized seismically further away and provide warning ∼60 min before discharge exceeds monsoon flood levels. We also show that numerical modeling of dam breaches which typically lacks in situ measurements can benefit from incorporating seismic data as constraints. Finally, we show that this event drastically increased sediment fluxes ∼670 km downstream for years and may significantly reduce the capacity of hydropower plants. Our results reveal ways to improve early warning of catastrophic outburst floods and the need to consider surface hazards' long‐term impact when managing infrastructure in mountainous regions. Long‐term monitoring of ice‐dammed lakes is important for understanding the process of lake storage, development, and glacial outburst flood (GLOF). Based on remote sensing observations for the period 1972–2020, we obtained what is so far the most detailed reconstruction of the filling and draining of Kyagar Lake, a typical annually ice‐dammed lake in the north Karakoram. We show that annually repeated lake fillings‐drainings were detected by satellite observations during two periods: 1996–2009 and 2015–2020, while between 2009 and 2015 no obvious cycle occurred. These two intermitted periods with regular annual revival of lake outburst were likely related to the long‐term cycle of glacier surge dynamics, namely two remarkable surge‐induced terminus accelerations during 1995–1997 and 2014–2016. Following each surge, the maximum lake areas decreased by about 33% from 1996 to 2009 and by about 88% from 2015 to 2020. Combined with climatic warming and the thinning of the ice‐dam, the storage capacity of Kyagar Lake will likely continue to decrease in the future, and the risk of lake outburst flood thus becomes lower. Repeated drainage following filling exacerbates the depletion of mass at the glacier terminal, leading to the cessation of storage and creating the conditions for the next glacial surge to occur, creating a long‐term iteration of the surge process. A major glacial‐lake outburst flood in the Glomma valley, south‐eastern Norway, took place during the final decay of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet. A combined morphological, geophysical and sedimentological study provides new insight into the variety of processes and deposits of the flood. The studied succession, some tens of metres in thickness, comprises the fill of a major flood basin that developed during hydraulic ponding. Large‐scale sand dunes and bars accumulated downstream of locations with expanding flow. Most notable are 10 m high, concentric dune ridges that accumulated downstream of a topographical constriction hosting a high‐velocity flow. Flow expansion at the outlet generated intense turbulence and scouring. The sand‐loaded eddies helped feeding the semi‐stationary dune ridges that grew vertically and downflow under high aggradation rates. Internal structures vary but reflect an overall shift in sedimentation from prevailing supercritical flow to overall subcritical flow conditions at high flood levels. Loading by water and sediment caused large‐scale, synsedimentary deformation, increasing local accommodation space. Fast‐falling flood levels caused stronger flow locally, while mud and fine sand settled in stagnant pools. The fall caused a significant drop in hydrostatic pressure. This triggered a release of excess pore pressure causing massive dewatering and fluidisation. Water‐escape structures include numerous (sub)vertical pipes. The present study shows that outburst flood‐generated, large‐scale dunes can develop in well‐sorted, fine sand and are thereby easily confused with aeolian deposits. Several dune fields in south‐eastern Norway are here reinterpreted as the product of at least two major flood events. Sandy dune fields with similar characteristics elsewhere in Scandinavia should likely also be reinterpreted, and the role of outburst floods during the final deglaciation of Scandinavia has seemingly been underestimated. Landslide‐dammed lakes are potentially hazardous and catastrophic for their possible failures and outburst floods (OFs) that will cause disastrous damage and life‐threatening losses, especially in the alpine areas where seismicity is strong and frequent, such as the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. This study focused on spreading an effective numerical model to reconstruct downstream hazards induced by a giant ancient landslide‐dammed lake outburst flood (LLOF) in the upper Minjiang River valley, eastern Tibetan Plateau based on the integration of the hydraulic characteristics of the upstream dammed lake, dam failure and erosion process, and downstream OF dynamics. The peak discharge levels and paleohydraulics of the LLOF were reconstructed using single‐embankment dam‐break program and one‐dimensional steady hydraulic numerical model. The results reveal that the maximum peak discharge of the Diexi paleo LLOF was 73,060–82,235 m3/s, with an uncertainty bound of 73,000–90,000 m3/s (mean value: 81,500 m3/s). Which inferred that the Diexi paleo LLOF was one of the largest known LLOFs in the view of worldwide scope comparing with other types of floods. Then, the hydraulic characteristics and route evolution of the LLOF were simulated in one‐dimensional unsteady numerical model. The results showed that the Diexi paleo LLOF took 7.47 h to transport from Diexi to Wenchuan within the simulated section of 91.23 km, with an average propagation velocity of 3.39 m/s. At the time of 15.57 h, the simulating section (between Diexi and Wenchuan) reached the maximum extent of inundation which was 664.91 km2, with an average value of 7.29 km2/km. Our modeling supports that the numerical model can be used successfully to reconstruct the hydraulics of a paleo LLOF in deep confined gorge environment. The reconstructed paleo LLOF data are of great significance to enrich the regional megaflood records and provide valuable information for geological hazard controls and OF risk assessment within the upper catchment of Minjiang River at the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. The development of hummocky topography is a poorly understood aspect of down‐wasting on debris‐covered glaciers that is often attributed to variable debris thickness. Thousands of enclosed depressions pit the hummocky topography. To better understand depression growth, we examined the size distribution and geometry of depressions on the Ngozumpa Glacier, in the Everest Region of Nepal. The depressions exhibited a power‐law size distribution, fractal perimeters, and power‐law depth‐area scaling, which suggest positive feedback growth. With a simple model, we showed that positive feedback growth produces similar power‐law size distributions. Based on these findings, we propose a "sinkhole" hypothesis for the development of depressions. Drainage into englacial sink points removes debris from the depressions and inhibits ponds from overflowing, thereby enabling positive feedback growth via incision, increased sub‐debris melt rates, and ice cliff retreat. By facilitating sustained depression growth, englacial drainage preconditions the ablation zone for the rapid growth of glacial lakes. These analyses suggest that the depressions undergo positive feedback growth. With a simple model, we demonstrated that positive feedback growth produces distributions of depressions similar to the Ngozumpa Glacier. Variable thickness debris cannot explain positive feedback depression growth because downhill debris movement and pond overflows would inhibit growth. However, englacial drainage is widespread on debris‐covered glaciers, and karst sinkholes undergoing positive feedback growth develop distributions similar to the depressions. Englacial drainage makes positive feedback depression growth possible by focusing incision and debris removal within the depression, limiting the influence of negative feedbacks. Sustained depression growth primes the glacier for the rapid development of glacial lakes, which increase melt rates and can pose outburst flood hazards. Our results show that englacial drainage is an important driver of hummocky topography development on debris‐covered glaciers. To characterize the spatiotemporal variations of glacier surface speed on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska (∼3,900 km2), we derived 92 surface speed fields between October 2014 and December 2019 using intensity offset tracking on Sentinel‐1 data. On average, speeds are 50% greater in spring (March‐May) than the annual mean (69 m a−1) while winter speeds are close to the annual mean. While marine‐terminating glaciers have their maximum speed near the terminus, both land‐ and lake‐terminating glaciers flow fastest around the median glacier elevation. On average, the lake‐terminating and tidewater glaciers flow 1.7 and 2.3 times faster than the land‐terminating glaciers, respectively. Monthly variations over the 5‐year period are strikingly synchronous regardless of terminus type suggesting that regional‐scale meteorological drivers govern the temporal variability. Mean annual speeds fluctuate roughly ±10% of the period mean without an apparent trend. At lake‐terminating Bear Glacier, a short‐term tripling in ice speed in fall 2019 over the area below an ice‐dammed lake coincides with an observed glacier lake outburst flood (GLOF). An earlier GLOF caused a persistent breach of the beach barrier between the proglacial lake and ocean which likely led to overall speed‐up of the lower glacier part throughout 2019. A significant speedup was also observed at the lower part of the lake‐terminating Ellsworth Glacier and attributed to rapid glacier retreat and lake expansion, probably further amplified by the terminus area becoming buoyant and a large tabular iceberg breaking off. Our results highlight the impact of GLOFs and proglacial characteristics in spatial and temporal glacier speed variations. Alpine mass wasting events have impacts that extend past their headwater origins, sometimes reaching populated lowlands. Understanding the processes driving these sediment pulses, and how they contribute to basin‐scale sediment fluxes, is important for hazard assessment and aquatic habitat management. The Suiattle River, which drains Glacier Peak stratovolcano in Washington State, is a dominant contributor of suspended sediment in the region. Normalized for drainage area, it supplies more suspended sediment than nearly any other river in the area and more than twice as much as the White Chuck River, which drains the opposite flank of the volcano. Despite its importance to the regional sediment budget, geomorphic processes in the basin have received relatively little attention in the literature. In this study, we build on previous work to explore the magnitude, timing and triggering mechanisms of sediment loading events in the basin. We find that outburst flood‐triggered debris flows from Chocolate Glacier are of widely varying magnitude and coincide with high temperatures in the late summer. Major debris flow activity initiated in the late 1930s, with at least eight valley‐filling debris flows since then. Smaller, more recent debris flows, likely also driven by outburst floods, occur in five of seven years of complete data. In total, the small debris flows and the subsequent autumn flushing events explain ~21% of the 'anomalous' sediment load in the basin, while reworking and abrasion of the historic events may explain another ~26%. We speculate that some of the remaining unexplained 'anomalous' load could be the result of a feedback between channel lateral instability (originally triggered by the valley‐spanning debris flows) and bluff erosion. Outburst floods in mountainous landscapes traverse complex topography and interact with the channel and valley walls, producing intense flow hydraulics that drive geomorphic change and impact people and infrastructure. Evidence of modern and ancient outburst floods is scattered around the eastern Himalaya, but hydraulics related to these geomorphic features are uncharacterized, limiting our understanding of the role of large floods in long‐term evolution of the region. Here we combine remote and field observations of the 2000 Yigong River landslide‐dam outburst flood with 2‐D numerical flood simulations using the software GeoClaw. Modeling results agree with field evidence to the extent that we judge the simulated hydraulics to be relevant to flood hazard and geomorphic investigations. Results show that the hydraulics of outburst floods through rugged topography differ from those expected for nonflood flows, in magnitude and in the spatial patterns of flow speed, direction, and shear stress. The flood produced sustained high bed shear stresses capable of plucking meter‐scale blocks immediately downstream of breach, in the steep Tsangpo Gorge, and in isolated locations associated with valley constrictions. Simulated shear stresses suggest that outburst floods deposited numerous kilometer‐scale boulder bars observed along the flood pathway, armoring the bed, increasing channel roughness, and inhibiting incision in locations that would not be predicted for nonflood flows. Our findings highlight the potential for different magnitude flows to promote not only different amounts, but also different patterns of bedrock erosion, with implications for the role of prehistoric megafloods in the topographic evolution of the eastern Himalaya. Geomagnetic excursions are short‐lived episodes when Earth's magnetic field deviates into an intermediate polarity state. Understanding the origin, frequency, amplitude, duration, and field behaviour associated with excursions is a forefront research area within solid Earth geophysics. Excursion events typically last a few thousand to tens of thousands of years; unlike full reversals, excursions are generally not recorded around the globe. We present here a new palaeomagnetic record (Geomagnetic excursions) from a lacustrine sediment sequence (at times, punctuated by undersized horizons of the gravels) with extraordinarily stable signals. Palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic investigations were performed on a 17‐m‐thick profile of unconsolidated sediments from Bagwalipokar palaeolake (Lat. 29°43′18″; Long. 79°28′42″; altitude 4167 ft), Binta Basin in the Kumaun Lesser Himalaya, situated in the zone of the active North Almora Thrust (NAT). A total of 540 oriented palaeomagnetic samples from 108 horizons (five samples per horizon) were collected from the section. The extrapolation of the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) date indicates that the whole section was deposited between 45 and 2.5 ka. Magnetic remanence is predominantly carried by magnetite alone. Virtual Geomagnetic Pole (VGP) latitudes were determined using mean declinations and inclinations. Two geomagnetic excursions were observed at younger levels [11.6–10.5 m (15.5–14.7 ka) and 15–11.7 m (8.0–2.85 ka)]. These geomagnetic excursions correlate with the recently reported younger Hawaiian lava flow excursions. The youngest excursion from 8 ka may be attributed to the climatic event beginning at 8.2 ka cooling event of an oxygen isotope record of biogenic carbonate from palaeolake Riwasa in north‐western India that provides a history of the Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) from ∼11 to 6 ka BP and also the North Atlantic glacial outburst flood and the slowdown of Atlantic meridional overturning circulation. During the Middle Pleistocene late Saalian glaciation of northern central Europe numerous pro-glacial lakes formed along the southwestern margin of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet. Little is known about the drainage history of these lakes, the pathways of glacial lake outburst floods and their impacts on erosion, sedimentation and landscape evolution. This study investigated the impact of the late Saalian Weser and Münsterland Lake (Germany) outburst floods. In particular, we reconstructed the routing and flow dynamics of the lake outburst flood and analysed the flood related sediments. We employed one-dimensional hydraulic modelling to calculate glacial lake outburst flood hydrographs. We modelled the flow pathway and local flow conditions along the pathway based on the boundary conditions of two different hydrographs and two different ice-margin positions. The modelling results were compared with geomorphological and sedimentological field data in order to estimate the magnitude and impact of the flood on erosion and sedimentation. Two major lake drainage events are reconstructed for the study area, during which approximately 90-50 km3 of water was released. Modelling results indicate that the lake outburst floods created a high-energy flood wave with a height of 35-50 m in confined valley areas that rapidly spread out into the Lower Rhine Embayment eventually flowing into the North Sea basin. The sedimentary record of the outburst floods comprises poorly sorted coarse-grained gravel bars, long-wavelength bedforms and sandy bedforms deposited by supercritical and subcritical flows. Some parts of the sandy flood deposits are rich in reworked mammoth bones or mammoth and horse teeth, pointing to reworking of older fluvial sediments, hydraulic concentration and subsequent re-sedimentation of vertebrate remains. These deposits are preserved in sheltered areas or at high elevations, well above the influence of postglacial fluvial erosion. Glacial meltwater and ice calving contribute to the flood volume of glacial lakes such as Lake Merzbacher in the Tian Shan Mountains of central Asia. In this study, we simulated the lake's volume by constructing an empirical relationship between the area of Lake Merzbacher, determined from satellite images, and the lake's water storage, derived from digital elevation models. Results showed that the lake water supply rate before Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) generally agreed well with those during the GLOFs from 2009 to 2012 but not in 2008 and 2015. Furthermore, we found that the combination of glacial meltwater and ice calving is not enough to fully explain the supply rate during GLOFs in 1996 and 1999, suggesting other factors affect the supply rate during GLOFs as well. To examine this further, we compared the water supply rate before and during GLOF events in 1999 and 2008. We inferred that quickly released short-term and intermediate-term water storage by glaciers have likely contributed to both flood events in those years. This study highlights the need to improve our understanding of the supply component of outburst floods, such as irregularly released stored water may lead to GLOF events with generally three different types: case I (singular event-triggered englacial water release), case II (glacier melt due to temperature changes), and case III (englacial water release mixed with glacier melt). Decay of the last Cordilleran Ice Sheet (CIS) near its geographical centre has been conceptualized as being dominated by passive downwasting (stagnation), in part because of the lack of large recessional moraines. Yet, multiple lines of evidence, including reconstructions of glacio-isostatic rebound from palaeoglacial lake shoreline deformation suggest a sloping ice surface and a more systematic pattern of ice-margin retreat. Here we reconstructed ice-marginal lake evolution across the subdued topography of the southern Fraser Plateau in order to elucidate the pattern and style of lateglacial CIS decay. Lake stage extent was reconstructed using primary and secondary palaeo-water-plane indicators: deltas, spillways, ice-marginal channels, subaqueous fans and lakebottom sediments identified from aerial photograph and digital elevation model interpretation combined with field observations of geomorphology and sedimentology, and ground-penetrating radar surveys. Ice-contact indicators, such as ice-marginal channels, and grounding-line moraines were used to refine and constrain ice-margin positions. The results show that ice-dammed lakes were extensive (average 27 km²; max. 116 km²) and relatively shallow (average 18 m). Within basins successive lake stages appear to have evolved by expansion, decanting or drainage (glacial lake outburst flood, outburst flood or lake maintenance) from southeast to northwest, implicating a systematic northwestward retreating ice margin (rather than chaotic stagnation) back toward the Coast Mountains, similar in style and pattern to that proposed for the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet. This pattern is confirmed by cross-cutting drainage networks between lake basins and is in agreement with numerical models of North American ice-sheet retreat and recent hypotheses on lateglacial CIS reorganization during decay. Reconstructed lake systems are dynamic and transitory and probably had significant effects on the dynamics of ice-marginal retreat, the importance of which is currently being recognized in the modern context of the Greenland Ice Sheet, where >35% of meltwater streams from land-terminating portions of the ice sheet end in ice-contact lakes. Climate change in the mid-to-late Holocene transition is very important for predicting future climate trends and understanding the relationship between abrupt climate change and the development of past human civilization. In this study, Sr/Ca ratios and d18O records with the annual resolution extracted from four fossil corals that were growing during the Middle Bronze Age Cold Epoch (MBACE) were used to reconstruct sea surface temperature (SST) and seawater d18O (d18Osw) in the South China Sea (SCS) during the mid-to-late Holocene transition. The results indicate that the SCS experienced a rapid cooling and wetting event during the period of ~3,500-3,800 years BP (before present year 1950). Specifically, the average SST and d18Osw declined rapidly by ~3°C and ~0.65‰, respectively, over an interval of ~100 years from ~3,850 years BP to ~3,750 years BP. This rapid climate change pattern recorded in coral archives broadly agrees with those in foraminiferal and stalagmite records from adjacent land and ocean areas. Consistent with other records from the North Atlantic, this cold event in the Asia-Western Pacific region that occurred during the MBACE and was originally identified in the North Atlantic and European regions should have occurred at the global scale, which might be caused by changes in the Asian summer monsoon linked with solar irradiance and/or the North Atlantic climate. In addition, this rapid climate change might support the occurrence and timing of the outburst flood event during the Xia Dynasty and might have led to the fall of the Xia Dynasty. Outburst floods from ice‐marginal lakes are poised to become more prevalent in a warming climate. As glaciers thin and tributaries detach, water can be impounded in these unstable lakes at valley confluences. To characterize the role of the little‐studied englacial hydrological system during an outburst flood cycle, we deployed a variety of geophysical and hydrometeorological instruments in and around an ice‐marginal lake dammed by the Kaskawulsh Glacier, Yukon, Canada, to capture its 2017 filling and drainage. The subaerial lake reached a maximum volume of 9.9 ±0.5×106 m 3 on 17 August before draining over the course of ∼19 days. During lake filling, abrupt changes in ice shelf uplift rates are associated with the formation of faults and fractures. These hydromechanical interactions are closely linked to a redistribution of englacial water as evidenced by fluctuations in shallow borehole water pressures, and changes in radar internal reflection power. Water balance calculations reveal that the subaerial, subglacial, and englacial reservoirs respectively store 20 (17–23)%, 40 (25–50)%, and 40 (30–60)% of water in the catchment at peak lake level. The calculated englacial storage volume implies saturated porosities up to 4–10% locally or 2–4% catchment‐wide. The englacial system is therefore both volumetrically important and influenced by the hydromechanical interactions between the lake and glacier. Its spatial extent and storage capacity may play a role in lake drainage initiation, modulation of the flood hydrograph, and lake refilling. On 3 September 1998, a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) that originated from Tam Pokhari occurred in the Hinku valley of the eastern Nepal Himalaya. This study analyses the lake's geomorphic and hydrologic conditions prior to the outburst, and evaluates the conditions that could contribute to a future flood through photogrammetric techniques. We processed high-resolution Corona KH-4A (2.7 m) and ALOS PRISM (2.5 m) stereo-images taken before and after the GLOF event, and produced detailed topographic maps (2-m contour interval) and DEMs (5 m × 5 m). We (re-) constructed lake water surfaces before (4410 ± 5 m) and after (4356 ± 5 m) the outburst, and reliably estimated the lake water surface lowering (54 ± 5 m) and the water volume released (19.5 ± 2.2 × 106 m3) from the lake, showing good agreement with the results obtained from ground-based measurements. The most relevant conditions that may have influenced the catastrophic drainage of Tam Pokhari in 1998 include the presence of: (i) a narrow (75 ± 6 m), steep (up to 50°) and high (120 ± 5 m) moraine dam; (ii) high lake level (8 ± 5 m of freeboard) and (iii) a steep overhanging glacier (>40°). The lake outburst substantially altered the immediate area, creating a low and wide (>500 m) outwash plain below the lake, a wide lake outlet channel (~50 m) and a gentle channel slope (~3-5°). Our new data suggest that the likelihood of a future lake outburst is low. Our results demonstrate that the datasets produced by photogrammetric techniques provide an excellent representation of micro-landform features on moraine dams, lake water surfaces and the changes in both over time, thereby allowing highly accurate pre- and post-GLOF (volumetric) change analysis of glacial lakes. Furthermore, it enables precise measurement of several predictive variables of GLOFs that can be useful for identifying potentially dangerous glacial lakes or prioritizing them for detailed field investigations. Understanding the long‐term streamflow variability of the Yarlung Tsangpo (called the Brahmaputra River in downstream) is critical for water resources management due to its provision of freshwater for millions of people and its flood risk. However, previous streamflow reconstructions, based on dendrochronology and palaeo‐flood sediments, are either discontinuous or cover only a few hundred years. Here, we provide a continuous palaeolimnological record of the streamflow of the Yarlung Tsangpo upstream. Our results reveal an unexpected streamflow rise after 6,000 years ago, indicating the Westerlies and glacier meltwater replaced Indian Summer Monsoon as the dominant driver of runoff. Furthermore, the relatively frequent palaeo‐flood events during the early and late Holocene may be attributed to El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variance. These findings suggest the future occurrence of unsustainable streamflow and an increased flooding risk, as a result of weakening Westerlies, reduced glaciers, and strengthened ENSO activity under climatic warming. To improve water resources management with goal of improving the public's lives, it's important to understand long‐term changes in streamflow and to determine underlying mechanisms. Here, we provide a continuous Holocene streamflow record using a river‐connected lake in the upstream of the Yarlung Tsangpo. Our results reveal that the streamflow was primarily controlled by the Indian Summer Monsoon before 6,000 years ago, which is consistent with modern observations. Later, however, the streamflow increased continuously despite the weakened monsoon. This increased streamflow was caused by the enhancement of the Westerlies and increased glacial meltwater. Palaeo‐floods, identified using Rate of Change analysis, show a relatively high frequency during the early and late Holocene, possibly linked to the variability of the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO). If correct, our findings suggest that future warming may weaken the Westerlies and accelerate glacier melting, thereby threatening the long‐term sustainability of the streamflow of the Yarlung Tsangpo. Additionally, climatic warming leading to an intensified ENSO would result in an increased flood risk. Glacial lake‐moraine dam systems are widespread in cold alpine environments such as the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau (QTP). Without climate change, the lake‐dam system exhibits stably dynamic evolution on a hydrological annual cycle. However, climate change may drive subtle alterations in the system's evolution. We developed a fully coupled Thermal‐Hydraulic‐Mechanical simulation platform considering ice‐water phase change, showing robust performance under CMIP6‐derived boundary conditions. Using this platform, we simulated climate warming‐driven multiphysics responses and dam stability evolutions of a homogeneous, simplified conceptual model of the lake‐dam system. We identified critical temperature thresholds for permanently frozen area thawing and abrupt changes in dam stability of this lake‐dam system. Considering the current slope stability situations on the QTP, the SSP 5–8.5 climate warming scenario is conservatively anticipated to pose significant geological safety risks due to potential disaster chains from glacial lake failures. Our study provides insights into profound geological process evolutions driven by climate change. Two types of critical state‐transition points were identified in this conceptual model, marking shifts from quantitative to qualitative changes. A temperature rise threshold of 5.89°C indicates the onset of rapid shrinkage in permanently frozen area of the conceptual lake‐dam system. Another type of transition points occurs at 1.92°C and 4.48°C, corresponding to sharp year‐over‐year declines in spring and winter stability, respectively. A conservative estimation suggests that, if evaluated using stability reduction rate of the conceptualized model, moraine dams on the QTP with current stability factors below 1.19 in summer or 1.81 in winter, could fail after 120 years of intense climate warming. Considering the current stability situations on the QTP and geohazard chains resulting from glacial lake failure, uncontrolled global climate change would pose a severe threat to regional geological safety of QTP. The study has significant implications for assessing geological safety in periglacial environments and supports investigating coupling issues of climate change, geological processes, and human activities. We describe a revised understanding of the extent and dynamics of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet on the continental shelf of northern British Columbia, Canada. During the Local Last Glacial Maximum ice streams occupied two of the three shelf‐crossing troughs in Queen Charlotte Sound (Goose Island Trough and Mitchell's Trough). A 25‐km‐wide outlet glacier – the Hecate Glacier – flowed south in Hecate Strait, parallel to the modern coast. It reached a grounding line at the head of Moresby Trough, beyond which an ice shelf may have extended to the edge of the continental shelf. The southern part of the independent Haida Gwaii Ice Cap formed piedmont lobes dissected by tunnel valleys. An emergent area east of the ice cap corresponds with the 'Hecate Refugium'. Subsequently grounded ice retreated from the shelf troughs. The Hecate Glacier retreated incrementally towards the north. Mainland ice then stabilized along a north–south margin near modern coasts, marked by submarine moraines in the Chatham Sound region and elsewhere. This margin was probably contemporaneous with the margin at Mt. Buxton in the south of the study area, dated at c. 17.6 to 16.6 ka (Darvill et al. 2018). Off southern Haida Gwaii, following a retreat, a glacier margin was established east of Juan Perez Sound, proximal to a sandur plain graded to a water level of −150 m. Proglacial lakes to the north of here were the likely source for an outburst flood that created gravel bedforms and an area of sea‐floor scour. In a final phase, diminished mainland ice was confined to fjords, and retreat inland is marked by a succession of submarine moraines, beginning with a moraine at the Douglas Channel sill. A sudden release of large volumes of water during a glacier outburst flood (GLOF) is a major hazard worldwide. Here, we identify the sedimentary signature of glacial and non‐glacial processes, including GLOFs, based on lacustrine sediments from the distal glacier‐fed Lake Buarvatnet in western Norway. Historically documented GLOFs in 2002 CE and during the 1980s CE are identified in the 210Pb‐ and 14C‐dated sediments. These events have the same sedimentary signature as 12 earlier events throughout the Holocene interpreted to represent previous GLOFs in the catchment. The GLOFs are interpreted to have occurred during periods when the glacier extent was similar to the modern positions, and the events are thus used to pinpoint past positions of the glacier terminus and, hence, the equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs). The results indicate that the glacier Svartenutbreen, located at the eastern part of Folgefonna, had a similar size in 2002 CE as c. 8200–8300 cal. a BP, corresponding to the 8.2 ka event in the North Atlantic region. The regrowth of Sørfonna after the Holocene Thermal Optimum occurred at c. 6900 cal. a BP and Svartenutbreen was at modern size and extent in the periods c. 6400, c. 5450, c. 4850, c. 3850, c. 3550 and c. 1650 cal. a BP. Since 1650 cal. a BP, we infer that the glacier was larger than the 2002 CE glacier extent until 1910 CE when a GLOF occurred. Svartenutbreen has been retreating since 1910 CE, which led to the ice damming of the two historical GLOFs in the 1980s and 2002 CE separated by a glacier advance in the 1990s CE. The findings are discussed and compared to other regional glacier reconstructions in Norway, and emphasize the value of identifying and utilizing GLOFs as an indicator of past ELA variability. ABSTRACT Glacier and permafrost hazards such as glacial-lake outburst floods and rock-ice avalanches cause significant socio-economic damages worldwide, and these processes may increase in frequency and magnitude if the atmospheric temperature rises. In the extratropical Andes nearly 200 human deaths were linked to these processes during the twentieth century. We analysed bibliographical sources and satellite images to document the glacier and permafrost dynamics that have caused socio-economic damages in this region in historic time (including glacial lake outburst floods, ice and rock-ice avalanches and lahars) to unravel their causes and geomorphological impacts. In the extratropical Andes, at least 15 ice-dammed lakes and 16 moraine-dammed lakes have failed since the eighteenth century, causing dozens of floods. Some floods rank amongst the largest events ever recorded (5000 × 106 m3 and 229 × 106 m3, respectively). Outburst flood frequency has increased in the last three decades, partially as a consequence of long-term (decades to centuries) climatic changes, glaciers shrinkage, and lake growth. Short-term (days to weeks) meteorological conditions (i.e. intense and/or prolonged rainfall and high temperature that increased meltwater production) have also triggered outburst floods and mass movements. Enormous mass failures of glaciers and permafrost (> 10 × 106 m3) have impacted lakes, glaciers, and snow-covered valleys, initiating chain reactions that have ultimately resulted in lake tsunamis and far-reaching (> 50 km) flows. The eruption of ice-covered volcanoes has also caused dozens of damaging lahars with volumes up to 45 × 106 m3. Despite the importance of these events, basic information about their occurrence (e.g. date, causes, and geomorphological impact), which is well established in other mountain ranges, is absent in the extratropical Andes. Abstract: Late Glacial and Holocene rock‐slope failures occur often as multistage failures where paraglacial adjustment and stress adaptation are hypothesized to control phases of detachment. However, only limited data sets are available to decipher large multistage rock‐slope failures in detail. Here we apply sedimentology, radiocarbon dating, and geophysics to reconstruct multistage rock‐slope failure recorded in lake sediments. We present a unique inventory from Lake Oeschinen (Bernese Alps, Switzerland) covering ~2.5 kyr of rock‐slope failure history. The lake sediments have been investigated using sediment‐core analysis, radiocarbon dating, and seismic‐to‐core and core‐to‐core correlations, which were linked to (pre‐) historic and meteorological records. The results imply that the lake in its present extent is significantly younger than the ~9.5‐kyr‐old Kandersteg rock avalanche in the close vicinity. Up to eleven rock‐slope failure events could be identified and related to specific detachment scarps, which provided information for energy considerations. Four events likely coincided with (pre‐) historic earthquakes. At least six events detached from the same area, potentially initiated by prehistoric seismicity and later from stress‐relaxation processes. The data imply unexpected high recurrence rates (~1/300 years) and also help to understand the generation of a historical lake‐outburst flood. Floods, droughts, and rainfall‐induced landslides are hydro‐hazards that affect millions of people every year. Anticipation, mitigation, and adaptation to these hazards is increasingly outpaced by their changing magnitude and frequency due to climate change. A key question for society is whether the research we pursue has the potential to address knowledge gaps and to reduce potential future hazard impacts where they will be most severe. We use natural language processing, based on a new climate hazard taxonomy, to review, identify, and geolocate out of 100 million abstracts those that deal with hydro‐hazards. We find that the spatial distribution of study areas is mostly defined by human activity, national wealth, data availability, and population distribution. Hydro‐hazard events that impact large numbers of people lead to increased research activity, but with a strong disparity between low‐ and high‐income countries. We find that 100 times more people need to be affected by hazards before low‐income countries reach comparable research activity to high‐income countries. This "Wealth over Woe" bias needs to be addressed by enabling and targeting research on hydro‐hazards in highly impacted and under‐researched regions, or in those sufficiently socio‐hydrologically similar. We urgently need to reduce knowledge base biases to mitigate and adapt to changing hydro‐hazards if we want to achieve a sustainable and equitable future for all global citizens. However, the level of research in wealthy countries is much higher despite considerably more people being affected by disasters in low‐income countries. Based on our findings, we recommend regions where more research is needed for an equitable distribution of research so that all of global society is better prepared for future disasters. The transboundary Arun River Basin (ARB) spreads across Nepal and Tibet. Nearly 95% of the basin lies in Tibet through which the Pumqu River flows, forming the Arun River once it enters Nepal. The ARB has five large hydropower projects undergoing construction or planned for the future. Rainfall and earthquake‐induced landslides, landslide‐dammed lakes and landslide‐induced glacial lake outburst floods pose major risks to smooth operation of these projects. To safeguard upcoming hydropower projects, areas susceptible to landslides in the ARB must be identified. We used high‐resolution satellite imagery and open‐source tools to generate a multitemporal landslide inventory for the basin. The rigorously quality‐controlled inventory represents a yearly record of landslides from 2011 to 2020. A data‐driven approach was used to map areas susceptible to landslides within the ARB. The multitemporal landslide inventory combined with other readily available Earth observation‐based variables was used to create a landslide susceptibility map. The susceptibility analysis provides a valuable initial estimate of where landslides are likely to initiate. Floods in India are recurring natural disasters resulting from extreme precipitation during the summer monsoon season (June–September). The recent flood in North India in July 2023 caused substantial damage to lives, agriculture, and infrastructure. However, what led to the 2023 North India flood and the role of atmospheric and land drivers still need to be examined. Using in situ observations, satellite data, and ERA5 reanalysis combined with hydrological and hydrodynamical modeling, we examine the role of land and atmospheric drivers in flood occurrence and its impacts. Extreme precipitation in a large region during 7–10 July 2023 created favorable conditions for the flood in the hilly terrains and plains of north India. More than 300 mm of precipitation fell in just 4 days, which was eight times higher than the long‐term average (2001–2022). Anomalously high moisture transport over northern India was recorded on 7 July 2023, making atmospheric conditions favorable for intense landfall. Increased column water vapor and specific humidity at different pressure levels confirmed the continuous moisture presence before the extreme rainfall that caused floods in northern India from 7 to 12 July 2023. Atmospheric and land (high antecedent soil moisture) conditions contributed to a more than 200% rise in streamflow at several gauge stations. Satellite‐based flood extent shows a considerable flood inundation that caused damage in the Sutlej and Yamuna River basins. Our findings highlight the crucial role of the favorable land and atmospheric conditions that caused floods and flash floods in north India in July 2023. Anomalously high moisture transport caused intense rainfall, which, combined with high soil moisture, produced high runoff and streamflow conditions. Flood inundation caused damage to the Sutlaj and Yamuna river basins. Our findings show the need to monitor soil moisture and atmospheric processes for early warning of floods in hilly regions. Damage, destruction and casualties related to landslide and debris flow are common phenomena in the Himalaya, especially during the summer monsoon. This fact was tragically illustrated on 22 July 1996, when Larcha, situated at the 109-km mark of the Arniko Highway, upper Bhotekoshi Valley, central Nepal, experienced a catastrophic debris flow powered by the Bhairab Kunda Stream. Of the 22 houses in Larcha, 16 were swept away, two were partially damaged and 54 people were killed in a matter of a few minutes. The event attracted attention when media linked it to a glacial lake outburst flood as a result of the fact that the source of the stream is a glacial lake. To understand the cause, initiation mechanism and deposition process, the basin area was studied from geological, geomorphologic and engineering geological points of view and the role of precipitation was evaluated. A combination of rainfall, runoff from cliff faces and stream undercutting triggered failure of the bedrock and colluvium, both on the dip and counter-dip slopes, 500 m upstream from the highway. The landslide debris dammed the channel, which was eventually breached, and deposited approximately 104 000 m3 of coarse debris, dominated by the metasediments of the Lesser Himalayan origin, and overwhelmed the village of Larcha. The debris deposit was studied for clast size, composition, texture and dimensions. Lack of sorting and the presence of abundant silt and clay in the source area helped in the initiation of debris flow. The abundance of the Lesser Himalayan metasediment clasts together with the absence of debris traces upstream from the landslide site ruled out the possibility of a glacial lake outburst flood. Glacier retreat results in the formation and expansion, and sometimes outburst, of moraine-dammed lakes worldwide. Sudden outburst floods from such lakes have caused enormous damage to settlements and infrastructure located downstream. Such lakes located in the Himalayan region are highly prone to outburst floods due to climatic conditions and geotectonic settings. In this study, multi-temporal Landsat images from 2002-2014, digital elevation models (DEMs), geomorphic analysis and modelling were used to assess the changes in glacial lakes and the outburst susceptibility of moraine-dammed lakes in the Chandra-Bhaga basin of the north-western Indian Himalaya. An inventory of lakes was developed using satellite data, thematic maps and ground-based investigations for the Chandra-Bhaga basin. The total area of all glacial lakes (size >5000 m2) increased by 47% from 2002 to 2014, with a pronounced increase of 57% for moraine-dammed lakes. Sixteen moraine-dammed lakes were identified and assessed for outburst susceptibility using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). Forty-one reported glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) events from moraine-dammed lakes in Himalayan regions were analysed, culminating in the identification of 11 critical factors for assessing outburst susceptibility using the AHP, including those related to the lake area and change, surrounding terrain characteristics, dam geometry, regional seismicity and rainfall history. The past three GLOF events in the Himalayan region were used to validate the method and to classify moraine-dammed lakes as having very high, high, medium or low outburst susceptibility. Eight lakes classified as very high and high outburst susceptibility should be further investigated in detail. The proposed AHP-based approach is suitable for first-order identification of critical lakes for prioritising future detailed investigation and monitoring of moraine-dammed glacial lakes in the Himalayan region. ABSTRACT Deglaciation of north-central Quebec and Labrador led to the development of large ice-dammed lakes in river valleys surrounding Ungava Bay. These lakes are poorly understood due to uncertainties in the regional pattern of ice retreat. Lake Naskaupi occupied the George River valley where systematic mapping of glacial landforms and extensive elevation measurements of shorelines reveal a complex history characterized by multiple lake levels. Our reconstruction documents three well-defined lake levels marking extensive lake stages. Additional lake levels are poorly developed and relate to short-lived, transient lake stages. During its main stage (N2′), Lake Naskaupi consisted of two separate basins that evolved independently for some time. This configuration resulted from the persistence of cold-based ice conditions during the deglaciation that caused the retreating ice margin to remain in the middle section of the river valley. The presence of this ice dam is supported by large-scale outburst flood deposits that record the abrupt drainage of the southern Naskaupi basin. The magnitude of the elevation changes between the remaining lower lake levels suggests the occurrence of at least one other major drawdown before the final lake drainage.
