The bond between humans and dogs is precious and has been treasured since ancient times. Dog ownership is linked to numerous health benefits, such as increased physical activity and social functioning and decreased depression and cardiovascular events. However, dogs can transmit zoonotic diseases to humans, many of which present with cutaneous findings. This review summarizes the dermatologic manifestations, transmission routes, diagnosis, and treatment of zoonotic diseases transmitted by dogs, including vector‐borne, bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections. This review emphasizes the significance of clinicians obtaining a comprehensive exposure history when patients exhibit a rash of unknown origin. Such an approach can provide valuable epidemiological clues related to diagnosing a zoonotic disease transmitted by a pet dog. Furthermore, identifying the dog as an infection source and subsequent veterinary treatment can help prevent recurrent infections in dermatologic patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Slate Islands (Ontario) is one of Canada's larger impact structures at 32 km in diameter and has been linked to the Ordovician meteorite event (OME). We report zircon U–Pb dates from two suevite and two syenite samples collected from the Slate Islands. Plagioclase 40Ar/39Ar dates were also obtained from one of the samples. The plagioclase and most zircon dates record pre‐impact ages with links to known tectonic events, including those associated with the assembly of the Superior Craton at approximately 2700 Ma. However, Neoarchean zircon grains appear to be reset at 456.1 ± 6.9 Ma (±2σ) based on the lower intercept of discordia for all dated samples. The date overlaps its previously accepted age of 450 Ma and would be 2–19 million years following the parent asteroid breakup if related to the OME. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Anticoagulation of patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and cancer is challenging because of their high risk for stroke and bleeding. Little is known of the variations of oral anticoagulant (OAC) prescribing in patients with AF with and without cancer. Methods: Patients with first‐time AF during 2009–2019 from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink were included. Cancer diagnosis was defined as a history of breast, prostate, colorectal, lung, or hematological cancer. Competing‐risk analysis was used to assess the risk of OAC prescribing in patients with AF and cancer adjusted for clinical and sociodemographic factors. Results: Of 177,065 patients with AF, 11.7% had cancer. Compared to patients without cancer, patients with cancer were less likely to receive OAC: prostate cancer (subhazard ratio [SHR], 0.95; 95% CI, 0.91–0.99), breast cancer (SHR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.89–0.98), colorectal cancer (SHR, 0.93; 95% CI, 0.88–0.99), hematological cancer (SHR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.65–0.75), and lung cancer (SHR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.38–0.50). The cumulative incidence function (CIF) of OAC prescribing was lowest for patients with lung cancer and hematological cancer compared with patients without cancer. The difference between the CIF of OAC prescribing in patients with and without cancer becomes narrower in the most deprived areas. Elderly patients (aged ≥85 years) overall had the lowest CIF of OAC prescribing regardless of cancer status. Conclusions: In patients with AF, underprescribing of OAC is independently associated with certain cancer types. Patients with hematological and lung cancer are the least likely to receive anticoagulation therapy compared with patients without cancer. Underprescribing of OAC in cancer is linked to old age. Further studies of patients with AF and cancer are warranted to assess the net clinical benefit of anticoagulation in certain cancer types. There is an independent association between cancer and underprescribing of oral anticoagulants (OACs) in patients with atrial fibrillation, which may be driven by the risk of bleeding in certain types of cancer. Underprescribing of OACs was more common in patients with a history of lung cancer and hematological malignancies. However, the original tissue characteristics must be maintained in culture, a fact that is often assumed, but seldom assessed. We aimed to follow the retention of the original tissue identities of cleft lip‐derived skin and mucosa keratinocytes in vitro.Cleft lip‐derived keratinocytes were isolated from discarded tissue along the cleft margins during cheiloplasty. Cell identities were assessed by immunohistochemistry and quantitative real‐time PCR for tissue‐specific markers and compared with native lip tissue. Moreover, keratinocytes were regularly analyzed for the retention of the original tissue characteristics by the aforementioned methods as well as by differentiation assays.The various anatomical zones of the human lip could be distinguished using a panel of differentiation and functional‐based markers. Using these markers, retention of the original tissue identities could be followed and confirmed in the corresponding primary keratinocytes in culture.Our findings promote patient‐derived cells retaining their original identities as astonishing and clinically relevant in vitro tools. Although illegal, sexual harassment is endemic in US schools, with students perceiving that school officials ignore complaints of harassment. Research findings have linked school climate tolerant of sexual harassment to peer sexual harassment (PSH) and school outcomes, yet there is a need to better understand these relationships. This cross‐sectional study examined whether there was an indirect effect of school climate tolerant of sexual harassment on disengagement from school, individually and serially, through experiences of PSH victimization and feeling safe at school in a sample of 171 predominantly Black and White girls (14–19 years old) attending high school in the wider Memphis, Tennessee area. The findings supported that a climate tolerant of sexual harassment was indirectly related to school disengagement through PSH and feeling less safe. These findings add to the literature by demonstrating that a climate tolerant of sexual harassment, PSH victimization, and perceptions about personal safety are associated with harm to students' academic outcomes in the form of school and academic disengagement. Further, the current findings suggest that a national agenda for school safety needs to consider school climate tolerant of sexual harassment in order to be effective in responding to sexual harassment and supporting student engagement. Objective: Approximately 25% of individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) experience a chronic form of the disorder, referred to as severe and enduring anorexia nervosa (SE‐AN). Although the classification of SE‐AN remains preliminary, there have been increasing calls for a harm reduction‐based, collaborative treatment model for these patients. To provide such care for patients with SE‐AN, it is critical to listen to and learn from their lived experiences. Method: Patients (N = 17) admitted to an inpatient eating disorders program who met initial criteria for SE‐AN completed semi‐structured interviews about the course of their illness and prior treatment episodes. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. Data were analyzed using an inductive, reflexive approach to thematic analysis that examined common themes within and across interviews. Results: Three themes were identified focused on (1) the all‐encompassing nature of SE‐AN, (2) treatment experiences, and (3) living with chronic illness. Within these themes, there were subthemes. Overall, individuals noted clear insight about their condition, both negative and positive experiences with previous treatment, and hope for better quality of life despite their illness. Discussion: Individuals with SE‐AN describe their illness as a chronic condition and hope for a harm reduction‐based treatment. Future work, including the lived experiences of individuals with SE‐AN, is important to build our understanding of the classification and clinical characteristics of SE‐AN and to develop treatment approaches that may best serve these individuals. Public Significance: Many people with anorexia nervosa do not achieve a full recovery despite repeated treatment episodes throughout their lifespan. Understanding the lived experiences of individuals with SE‐AN may help to inform future treatment development efforts that could improve eating disorder and quality of life outcomes for these patients. On 29 September 2022 the Juno spacecraft flew within 354 km of Europa's surface while several instruments probed the moon's surroundings. During the close flyby, radio occultations were performed by collecting single‐frequency Doppler measurements. These investigations are essential to the study of Europa's ionosphere and represent the first repeat sampling of any set of conditions since the Galileo era. Ingress measurements resulted in a marginal detection with a peak ionospheric density of 4,000 ± 3,700 cm−3 (3σ) at 22 km altitude. A more significant detection emerged on egress, with a peak density of 6,000 ± 3,000 cm−3 (3σ) at 320 km altitude. Comparison with Galileo measurements reveals a consistent picture of Europa's ionosphere, and confirms its dependence on illumination conditions and position within Jupiter's magnetosphere. However, the overall lower densities measured by Juno suggest a dependence on time of observation, with implications for the structure of the neutral atmosphere. Background: Many women living with HIV (WLWH) experience pain. Alcohol use with the intent to treat pain could lead to hazardous drinking and difficulty in reducing drinking. Naltrexone acts on opioid receptors important for pain regulation and is an approved treatment for alcohol use disorder. In this secondary analysis of a randomized double‐blind placebo‐controlled naltrexone clinical trial, the goals were to (1) compare alcohol reduction between women who drank to treat pain and those who did not and (2) examine differences in alcohol reduction by both drinking intention and treatment arm. Methods: Women living with HIV (N = 194, mean age 48.3 years, 83% non‐Hispanic Black, 11% Hispanic) with hazardous drinking (>7 drinks/week) were randomized to receive daily treatment with naltrexone 50 mg or placebo for 4 months. Study visits occurred at baseline and 2, 4, and 7 months (posttreatment). The number of drinks/week was measured using the Timeline Follow Back. Use of alcohol to treat pain was self‐reported. Participants were categorized as using alcohol to treat pain or not and in the naltrexone or placebo group. Chi‐square, t‐test, MANOVA, and sequential mixed effects models were used to determine group differences in demographic factors, mean/drinks per week, and percent change in mean drinks/week at baseline and each follow‐up visit. Results: There was a consistent decrease in drinking throughout the study. There was not a significant difference in mean drinks/week at any point in the study between women who used alcohol to treat pain and those who did not. When considering treatment arm, at 2 months only those who did not use alcohol to treat pain in the naltrexone group had a significantly lower mean drinks/week than the other groups (p = 0.007); all groups had similar decreases in drinking from 4 months onward. Conclusion: In the naltrexone group, WLWH who drank to treat pain reduced their alcohol consumption more slowly than WLWH who did not drink to treat pain. Replication of these findings would suggest that alcohol treatment guidelines should address pain as a factor in drinking outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Influenza is a persistent public health problem associated with severe morbidity and mortality. Drug use is related to myriad health complications, but the relationship between drug use and severe influenza outcomes is not well understood. The study objective was to evaluate the relationship between drug use and severe influenza‐associated outcomes. Methods: Data were collected by the Influenza Hospitalization Surveillance Network (FluSurv‐NET) from the 2016–2017 through 2018–2019 influenza seasons. Among persons hospitalized with influenza, descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were used to analyze differences in demographic characteristics, risk and behavioral factors, and severe outcomes (intensive care unit [ICU] admission, mechanical ventilation, or death) between people who use drugs (PWUD), defined as having documented drug use within the past year, and non‐PWUD. Results: Among 48,430 eligible hospitalized influenza cases, 2019 were PWUD and 46,411 were non‐PWUD. PWUD were younger than non‐PWUD and more likely to be male, non‐Hispanic Black or Hispanic/Latino, smoke tobacco, abuse alcohol, and have chronic conditions including asthma, chronic liver disease, chronic lung disease, or immunosuppressive conditions. PWUD had greater odds of ICU admission and mechanical ventilation, but not death compared with non‐PWUD; however, these findings were not statistically significant after adjustment. Opioid use specifically was associated with increased risk of ICU admission and mechanical ventilation. Conclusion: These results support targeted initiatives to prevent influenza in this population, including influenza vaccination, which remains one of the most important tools to prevent influenza infection and associated severe outcomes. In June 2021, the Juno spacecraft executed a close flyby of Ganymede. During the encounter, Juno passed behind Ganymede for 15 min as observed from Earth, providing the geometry to conduct a radio occultation experiment to probe Ganymede's tenuous ionosphere. X‐band and Ka‐band radio links were transmitted from Juno to antennas at the Deep Space Network. Electrons encountered along the radio propagation path advance the signal's phase and a linear combination the two frequencies allows for a direct measurement of the electron content along the propagation path. On occultation ingress, an ionosphere peak of 2,000 ± 500 (1‐σ) cm−3 near the surface was observed. On occultation egress, no statistically significant ionosphere was detected. Ingress observation viewed where Ganymede's intrinsic magnetic field lines are open whereas egress observation viewed where the field lines are closed, implying electron impact ionization plays a key role in the generation of the ionosphere. Background and purpose: We evaluated the clinical and neurophysiological efficacy of rituximab (RTX) in a neurophysiologically homogeneous group of patients with monoclonal gammopathy and immunoglobulin M (IgM) anti‐myelin‐associated glycoprotein antibody (anti‐MAG) demyelinating polyneuropathy. Methods: Twenty three anti‐MAG‐positive polyneuropathic patients were prospectively evaluated before and for 2 years after treatment with RTX 375 mg/m2. The Inflammatory Neuropathy Cause and Treatment (INCAT) disability scale (INCAT‐ds), modified INCAT sensory score (mISS), Medical Research Council sum score, Patients' Global Impression of Change scale were used, IgM levels were assessed and extensive electrophysiological examinations were performed before (T0) and 1 year (T1) and 2 years (T2) after RTX treatment. Results: At T1 and T2 there was a significant reduction from T0 both in mISS and in INCAT‐ds, with a p value < 0.001 in the inferential Friedman's test overall analysis. Ulnar nerve Terminal Latency Index and distal motor latency significantly changed from T0 to T1 and in the overall analysis (p = 0.001 and p = 0.002), and ulnar nerve sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude was significantly increased at T2 from T1, with a p value < 0.001 in the overall analysis. Analysis of the receiver‐operating characteristic curves showed that a 41.8% increase in SNAP amplitude in the ulnar nerve at T2 from T0 was a fair predictor of a mISS reduction of ≥2 points (area under the curve 0.85; p = 0.005; sensitivity: 90.9%, specificity: 83.3%). Conclusions: This study suggests that RTX is effective in patients with clinically active demyelinating anti‐MAG neuropathy over 2 years of follow‐up, and that some neurophysiological variables might be useful for monitoring this efficacy. During summer of 2019/2020, Sydney, Australia, experienced several days of extreme air pollution and low visibility due to bushfires. This research presents a case study that investigates the erythemal UV irradiance and resulting 1 h erythemal and 8 h actinic exposures during the worst of these days. Air quality, meteorological and UV data used in the analysis were readily available online or by request from governmental agencies. Analysis showed that even for the lowest visibility day (which had a minimum visibility of less than a kilometer) on 10 December 2019, there was a cumulative 1 h erythemal UV exposure of over 4 SED (standard erythema dose) and a cumulative 8 h exposure of 17 SED by the late afternoon. The 1 h exposure exceeded that of a minimum erythemal dose. Even on this extremely hazy day, these cumulative exposures are enough to exceed the recommended daily exposure limit for actinic exposures weighted with the health sensitivity spectrum for the skin and eyes set by the International Commission of Non‐Ionizing Radiation Protection. Hybrid nanoparticles, composed of an iron oxide magnetic core embedded with gold fractal‐grown hyper branches, have been synthesized by a seed‐mediated growth approach. Magnetic and plasmonic properties have been described respectively through ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and extinction spectra. According to the hydroxylamine amount, used as a surface catalysed reducing agent, the number of branches and the intensity of the fractal growth have been finely tuned and were observed through TEM microscopy. The magnetic core allowed their motion control via an external magnetic field. The plasmonic properties of these hyper‐branched hybrid nanoparticles were recorded similar to those shown by the branched gold nanoparticles, but it is interesting to note that they showed an encouraging photothermal response. Background: Cutaneous exogenous ochronosis (EO) is frequently graded and staged according to the Dogliotti or Phillips classification system, both in research studies and in clinical practice. There are no data to support the use of these systems in either of these settings. These systems additionally purport that the clinical and histopathological findings of EO are concordant; however, anecdotal evidence suggests otherwise. We aimed to determine the clinical‐histopathological concordance rates in EO and to assess the suitability of the Dogliotti and Phillips classification systems for the grading and staging of EO lesions. Methods: Five cutaneous EO cases diagnosed at our institution were studied. Clinical and histopathological data were obtained by medical record and histopathology slide review. Each case was assigned a clinical and histopathological grade according to both the Dogliotti and Phillips classifications. Clinical‐histopathological concordance rates were determined for each classification. Results: Clinical‐histopathological concordance was seen in 80% and 60% of EO lesions when graded according to the Dogliotti and Phillips classifications, respectively. Conclusions: Cutaneous EO lesions do not consistently show clinical‐histopathological concordance. Although the Dogliotti and Phillips classifications may have clinical utility, they are not suitable to grade EO histopathologically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cold water pollution (CWP) is caused by releases of unseasonably cold water from large, thermally stratified dams. Rapid and prolonged decreases in water temperature can have depressive effects on the metabolism, growth and swimming performance of fish. However, it is unknown if reducing the rate of temperature decrease could mitigate these negative effects by allowing thermal acclimation/acclimatization to occur. This study investigated the rate of temperature decrease as a potential CWP mitigation strategy in juvenile Murray cod Maccullochella peelii. M. peelii were exposed to a gradual, intermediate or rapid temperature decrease from 24 to 14°C. Energetic costs, locomotor performance, growth and survival were measured to determine if the initial thermal regime affected the thermal acclimation capacity of M. peelii. Cold exposure had significant acute and lasting depressive effects regardless of the rate of temperature decrease, although M. peelii showed varying degrees of thermal compensation in swimming performance and metabolism after 8 weeks of exposure to low temperatures. The short‐term effects of CWP‐like reductions in temperature are significant, but over time M. peelii can offset some of the depressive effects of CWP through thermal plasticity. This study highlights the importance of understanding physiological responses of fish to inform management and conservation. We conclude that rate of water temperature decline cannot be used to mitigate the sublethal effects of CWP on juvenile M. peelii but may still be useful for managing the negative effects in other native Australian fish species. We use panel data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) to document the changing volume and rate of intercounty migration among the poor. We evaluate whether the exchange of migrants between metro and nonmetro counties has exacerbated spatial disparities in poverty and whether some nonmetro counties have become "collecting grounds" for America's poor. The PSID highlights exceptionally high rates of intercounty migration among the nonmetro population, but especially among the poor. The results show that rural poor migrants circulate among nonmetro counties, often from one poor county to an even poorer one. This circulation of poor rural migrants has exacerbated the concentration of poverty in the most economically disadvantaged nonmetro counties. Concentrated poverty also is exacerbated by the migration of the "best and brightest" from nonmetro‐to‐metro counties, which also is associated with upward residential attainment (to counties with lower poverty rates). Significantly, metro‐to‐nonmetro migration is both selective of the poor and strongly associated with downward residential mobility to poorer nonmetro counties. Plant litter is a key component of plant-soil feedback (PSF), given its strong potential impacts on plant establishment and growth, through chemical and physical pathways. Although PSF of the layer of dead plant material on the soil surface (above-ground litter) has been widely studied, little is known about the role of dead roots (below-ground litter) and the impact of plant symbionts on host litter legacy. 2. Here, we examined whether the fungal endophyte Epichloë occultans changed the effects of above-and below-ground litter of Lolium multiflorum plants on the establishment of Trifolium repens. We hypothesized that both types of litter deposited by the grass-endophyte symbiosis reduce the establishment of the legume due to the release of allelopathic compounds during the decomposition and leaching processes. 3. To test this, we performed two experiments with different quantities of litter produced by plants of the same grass population, with high and low levels of endophyte infection (E+ and E-). Seeds of T. repens were exposed to the above-ground litter with or without the addition of below-ground litter, or to their leachates, to separate the physical and chemical pathways. 4. We found that the treatments with the combination of the above-and below-ground litter produced by E+ plants increased the germination speed and seedling emergence of T. repens by 56% compared with both types of litter produced by E- plants. A similar effect was also observed with only the above-ground litter. However, the below-ground litter of E+ plants reduced the germination speed, seedling emergence by 76% and establishment of T. repens by 73% compared with the below-ground litter of E- plants. Besides, the below-ground litter had positive effects on the root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and reduced the root nodulation of T. repens. The quantity of litter did not affect any of these responses. 5. Our results suggest that these litter legacy effects could be due to the release of endophyte-induced secondary metabolites, such as phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Nitric oxide (NO) plays a multifaceted role in human physiology and pathophysiology, and its controlled delivery has great prospects in therapeutic applications. The light‐activated uncaging of NO from NO caging compounds allows this free radical to be released with accurate control of site and dosage, which strictly determine its biological effects. Molecular constructs able to activate fluorescence concomitantly to NO release offer the important advantage of easy and real‐time tracking of the amount of NO uncaged in a non‐invasive fashion even in the cell environment. This contribution provides an overview of the advances in photoactivatable NO releasers bearing fluorescent reporting functionalities achieved in our and other laboratories, highlighting the rationale design and their potential therapeutic applications. Background: Knowledge about inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in patients with Hermansky–Pudlak syndrome (HPS), a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by defective biogenesis of lysosome‐related organelles, could provide insights into IBD in general. Objective: To expand the understanding of IBD in patients with HPS. Methods: Retrospective review of records from patients with HPS evaluated at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center from 1995 to 2019 was conducted. Clinical features of IBD, genotyping results and histologic findings of colectomy specimens were analysed. Results: IBD affected 37 (14.2%; 12 male, 25 female) of 261 patients with HPS. Median age of onset was 17 years; range was 1 to 52 years. The most common symptoms of HPS IBD were hematochezia, abdominal pain and loose stools. Fistulae or extra‐intestinal manifestations developed in 30% or 22%, respectively. Genotyping showed that patients with biallelic variants in HPS1, HPS3, HPS4 or HPS6 were diagnosed with IBD. Six children had very early‐onset IBD. Patients with HPS‐3 had mild manifestations of IBD. Medical therapy and bowel resection were utilized to treat 73% and 35% of patients with HPS IBD, respectively; 7 of 13 patients receiving anti‐tumor necrosis factor alpha therapy had prolonged clinical responses. Active cryptitis, chronic inflammatory changes, granulomas and ceroid lipofuscinosis were histopathologic findings in three colectomy specimens. Conclusions: IBD resembling Crohn's disease affects some patients with HPS; genetic heterogeneity is a feature of HPS IBD. HPS3 is a new gene associated with human IBD. The solid‐state isolation of the different tautomers of a chemical compound can be a challenging problem. In many cases, tautomers with an energy very close to the most stable one cannot be isolated (elusive tautomers). In this article, with reference to the 4‐methyl‐7‐(pyrazin‐2‐yl)‐2H‐[1,2,4]triazolo[3,2‐c][1,2,4]triazole ligand, for which the elusive 3H‐tautomer has an energy only 1.4 kcal mol−1 greater than the most stable 2H form, we show that metal complexation is a successful and reliable way for stabilizing the elusive tautomer. We have prepared two complexes of the neutral ligand with CuBr2 and ZnBr2, namely, aquabromidobis[4‐methyl‐7‐(pyrazin‐2‐yl)‐3H‐[1,2,4]triazolo[3,2‐c][1,2,4]triazole]copper(II) bromide trihydrate, [CuBr(C8H7N7)2(H2O)]Br·3H2O, and dibromido[4‐methyl‐7‐(pyrazin‐2‐yl)‐2H‐[1,2,4]triazolo[3,2‐c][1,2,4]triazole][4‐methyl‐7‐(pyrazin‐2‐yl)‐3H‐[1,2,4]triazolo[3,2‐c][1,2,4]triazole]zinc(II) monohydrate, [ZnBr2(C8H7N7)2]·H2O. The X‐ray analysis shows that, in both cases, the elusive 3H‐tautomer is present. The results of the crystallographic analysis of the two complexes reflect the different coordination preferences of CuII and ZnII. The copper(II) complex is homotautomeric as it only contains the elusive 3H‐tautomer of the ligand. The complex can be described as octahedral with tetragonal distortion. Two 3H‐triazolotriazole ligands are bis‐chelated in the equatorial plane, while a water molecule and a bromide ion in elongated axial positions complete the coordination environment. The zinc(II) complex, on the other hand, is heterotautomeric and contains two bromide ions and two monodentate ligand molecules, one in the 2H‐tautomeric form and the other in the 3H‐tautomeric form, both coordinated to the metal in tetrahedral geometry. The observation of mixed‐tautomer complexes is unprecedented for neutral ligands. Instruction with primary sources promotes learner engagement and behavioural objectives. The school museum is a suitable resource for information literacy instruction in early childhood education. In this paper, we question conventional information literacy instruction. Drawing on a review of the scientific literature on information literacy and a review of educational policies, we argue that instructional innovation is needed in reading instruction in early childhood education. Based on the use of primary sources, we propose the interdisciplinary approach of the school museum as an alternative to the school library. This inquiry has implications for teacher effectiveness, student centred learning, reading motivation, and the school‐community relationship. Objectives: To examine the postnatal course of ophthalmic artery (OA) Doppler in women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and to evaluate the correlation between OA Doppler parameters and poor postnatal blood pressure control and renal dysfunction at 2–3 weeks and 6–9 weeks postnatally. Methods: This was a prospective cohort study of women with a singleton pregnancy and HDP seen at a tertiary pregnancy hypertension clinic between 2019 and 2021. Three visits were included: Visit 1, the last visit to the antenatal hypertension clinic within 2 weeks prior to delivery; Visit 2, at 2–3 weeks postnatally; and Visit 3, at 6–9 weeks postnatally. At each visit, maternal demographic characteristics, medical history, blood pressure and OA Doppler were obtained. In addition, fetal growth and fetal Dopplers were examined antenatally and, at 6–9 weeks postnatally, estimated glomerular filtration rate and proteinuria were quantified. Study participants were divided into four hypertension groups, according to longitudinal changes in blood pressure at the three visits. For the postnatal visits, hypertension was defined as systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg in the absence of antihypertensive medication, and SBP ≥ 130 mmHg and/or DBP ≥ 80 mmHg whilst taking antihypertensives. Group 1 was hypertensive at all three visits; Group 2 was hypertensive at Visits 1 and 2 but normotensive at Visit 3; Group 3 was hypertensive at Visits 1 and 3 but normotensive at Visit 2; and Group 4 was hypertensive at Visit 1 but normotensive at Visits 2 and 3. The longitudinal changes in mean arterial pressure (MAP), peak systolic velocity (PSV) 1, PSV2 and the ratio of PSV2/PSV1 over the three timepoints were examined by a repeated‐measures, multilevel, linear mixed‐effects analysis, controlling for maternal age, weight at presentation and use of antihypertensive medication. In addition, we examined the longitudinal change in OA Doppler parameters in women with different degrees of postnatal blood pressure control and in those with and those without renal dysfunction at 6–9 weeks postnatally. Results: A total of 108 women were recruited to the study, of whom 86 had new‐onset hypertension and 22 had chronic hypertension. When controlling for maternal age, weight at presentation and use of antihypertensive medication, a significant decline in log10 MAP (P < 0.001), log10 PSV1 (P < 0.001) and log10 PSV2 (P = 0.01) was seen between Visits 1 and 3. Log10 PSVR did not change with time. When assessing OA Doppler against hypertension group, log10 PSV1 and log10 PSV2 did not differ between the hypertension groups, whilst Group 4 had a lower log10 PSVR compared with Group 1 (P < 0.01), Group 2 (P = 0.03) and Group 3 (P < 0.01). At 6–9 weeks postnatally, log10 PSVR was lower in those without compared to those with renal dysfunction (−0.021, P = 0.01), whilst log10 MAP, log10 PSV1 and log10 PSV2 values did not differ. Log10 PSVR did not change with time and remained at −0.12 (95% CI, −0.13 to −0.11) across the three visits. Conclusions: In women with HDP, the OA‐PSVR was significantly higher in those with labile or persistently raised blood pressure postnatally compared to women whose blood pressure normalized. This work investigates the feasibility of using a decanter centrifuge to separate solid particles coated with a high melting fat from a liquid oil. The process involves feeding cold silica particles into a melt, upon which the hardstock fat crystallizes, and the particles are subsequently separated using a decanter centrifuge. Being the first attempt for such a design, only the separation step is studied, and a model system is used. It comprised canola oil (CO), fully hydrogenated rapeseed oil a priori crystallized on silica gel particles. Different particle sizes and accelerations of gravity were studied. To measure the success of this separation process, the data from light microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry of the feed, oleins, and stearins were used. The findings show that the separation of the fatty particles used in this work, and liquid oil in decanter centrifuges is feasible while future research should focus on the crystallization part of the process. The model developed to describe the oil‐holding capacity of the cake focuses on the capillary liquid entrapped in the spaces between the particles and sufficiently represents the experimental findings which show that separation efficiencies increase with increasing centrifugal acceleration. Practical Applications: This work introduces an alternative fat fractionation process by separating a model system of CO, FHRO, and solid entrainers through a decanter centrifuge. The results can be potentially used for the development of a fully continuous dry fractionation process, which can achieve in one step higher SE than the conventional ones and can be tripalmitate‐selective. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a severe ocular disease characterized by recurring acute and/or chronic corneal-conjunctival inflammation leading to visual sequelae.1 Since no treatments are universally effective in the management of VKC, novel therapies are currently under investigation, including anti-immunoglobulin E (IgE). Although the efficacy and safety of omalizumab have been assessed in the therapeutic management of IgE-mediated disorders2-7; literature data on the use of omalizumab in VKC are very sparse.8-13 Herein, we reported the use of omalizumab in treating conventional treatment-resistant VKC unresponsive in two children. The role of post‐transcriptional RNA modification is of growing interest. One example is the addition of non‐templated uridine residues to the 3′ end of transcripts. In mammalian systems, uridylation is integral to cell cycle control of histone mRNA levels. This regulatory mechanism is dependent on the nonsense‐mediated decay (NMD) component, Upf1, which promotes histone mRNA uridylation and degradation in response to the arrest of DNA synthesis. We have identified a similar system in Aspergillus nidulans, where Upf1 is required for the regulation of histone mRNA levels. However, other NMD components are also implicated, distinguishing it from the mammalian system. As in human cells, 3′ uridylation of histone mRNA is induced upon replication arrest. Disruption of this 3′ tagging has a significant but limited effect on histone transcript regulation, consistent with multiple mechanisms acting to regulate mRNA levels. Interestingly, 3′ end degraded transcripts are also subject to re‐adenylation. Both mRNA pyrimidine tagging and re‐adenylation are dependent on the same terminal‐nucleotidyltransferases, CutA, and CutB, and we show this is consistent with the in vitro activities of both enzymes. Background and aims: Interferon beta (IFNβ) is a well‐established first‐line therapy for relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients and remains the most widely prescribed agent. Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) represents a rare but severe adverse effect (AE) that could occur even after many years from the beginning of IFNβ therapy. Eculizumab is currently approved for treatment of aHUS and recently for neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) with aquaporin‐4 antibodies (AQP4‐IgG). In this article, we report the case of the latest onset of IFNβ‐related aHUS experienced by an MS patient and we briefly review the literature on this topic. Methods: We performed a systematic review of the literature using PubMed, and we performed a retrospective analysis of RRMS patients that received IFNβ‐1a in our center and developed thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). From this search, we identified only one patient. Results: In the published literature, we identified 24 MS patients who received IFNβ as disease‐modifying treatment (DMT) and then developed thrombotic microangiopathy with kidney injury. The aHUS has been diagnosed in 6, all received IFNβ‐1a and the latest onset was after 15 years. We report a case of a 39‐year‐old man affected by RRMS who assumed IFNβ‐1a since 1999. In July 2018, he developed an IFNβ‐related aHUS. After the failure of plasma exchange, he underwent eculizumab, with an improvement of glomerular filtration rate and without new signs of MS activity. Conclusion: To our knowledge, this case represents the latest onset of IFNβ‐related aHUS in MS patients. The clinical spectrum of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection is mixed. It ranges from asymptomatic cases, medium‐intensity forms with mild to moderate symptoms, to severe ones with bilateral lung involvement and respiratory distress, which can require transfer to ICUs and intubation. In most cases, the clinical picture is characterized by a persistent fever, cough, dyspnoea, expectoration, myalgias, arthralgias, headache, gastrointestinal symptoms, nasal congestion, and pharyngodynia. The spread of COVID‐19 in Europe has highlighted an atypical presentation of disease involving upper airways and, above all, dysfunction of olfactory and gustatory senses. There is ample evidence that COVID‐19 is significantly less severe in children than in adults. However, due to difficulties in assessing the disorder in children, especially among very young patients, the olfaction and gustatory dysfunctions remain open issues. Satellite estimates of surface ultraviolet A (UVA) (315–400 nm) from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME)‐2 were compared to ground‐based measurements at four stations in South Africa for 2015. The comparison of daily exposure and daily maximum irradiance was completed for all‐sky and clear‐sky conditions. There is a strong linear correlation between the satellite and ground‐based data with a correlation coefficient (r) between 0.86 and 0.97 for all‐sky conditions. However, at three of the stations the satellite data are underestimated compared to ground‐based data with a mean bias error (MBE) between −8.7% and −20.6%. A seasonal analysis indicated that there is a link between the bias in ground‐based and GOME‐2 UVA and cloud fraction. Factors such as aerosols, surface albedo, altitude and data resolution may contribute to the underestimations found at the three sites. These results indicate that satellite estimates of surface UVA over South Africa do not exhibit the same behavior as other stations around the world and therefore require further validation. A novel molecular hybrid has been designed and synthesized in which acridine orange (AO) is covalently linked to an N‐nitrosoaniline derivative through an alkyl spacer. Photoexcitation of the AO antenna with the highly biocompatible green light results in intense fluorescence emission and triggers NO detachment from the N‐nitroso appendage via an intramolecular electron transfer. The presence of the AO moiety encourages the binding with DNA through both external and partially intercalative fashions, depending on the DNA:molecular hybrid molar ratio. Importantly, this dual‐mode binding interaction with the biopolymer does not preclude the NO photoreleasing performances of the molecular hybrid, permitting NO to be photogenerated nearby DNA with an efficiency similar to that of the free molecule. These properties make the presented compound an intriguing candidate for fundamental and potential applicative research studies where NO delivery in the DNA proximity precisely regulated by harmless green light is required. Abstract: We report herein a novel nitric oxide (NO) donor activatable by visible blue light with an in‐built green fluorescence reporter. This NO photodonor, based on the amino‐nitro‐benzofurazan chromogenic skeleton, releases NO in solution with a quantum yield ΦNO=0.15 which increases up to 0.80 in Pluronic® micelles, the largest values ever reported for nonmetal‐containing NO donors activatable by visible light. Besides, the large contrast between the fluorescence emission of the chromogenic moiety after and before the NO release (>10) permits the easy and in real‐time quantification of the amount of NO released, without the addition of external fluorescent probes. This NO photodonor can also be effectively entrapped in a Pluronic‐based thermoresponsive hydrogel with excellent preservation of its photochemical and photophysical behaviour. These properties, together with the facile synthetic procedure, make the present compound an intriguing candidate for fundamental and potential applicative research studies where spatiotemporally regulated NO delivery is required. Kiteboarding is an aquatic sporting discipline that has not yet been considered in the literature to date in terms of solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) measurement. Kiteboarders need to look upward and are placed obliquely relative to the horizon when towed behind an overhead kite over a reflective water surface. This research defines the typical body surface orientation of a kiteboarder in motion through video vector analysis and demonstrates the potential risk to ocular and skin surface damage through practical measurement of solar UVR using a manikin model. Video analysis of 51 kiteboarders was made to construct skeletal wireframes showing the surface orientation of the leg, thigh, spine, humerus, lower arm and head of a typical kiteboarder. Solar UVR dosimeter measurements made using a manikin model demonstrate that the vertex and anterior surfaces of the knee, lower leg and lower humerus received 89%, 90%, 80% and 63% of the available ambient UVR, respectively, for a typical kiteboarder who is tilted back more than 15° from vertical while in motion. Ocular (periorbital) exposures ranged from 56% to 68% of ambient. These new findings show that the anterior skin surfaces of kiteboarders and the eye are at elevated risk of solar UVR damage. Uterine arteriovenous malformations are rare conditions with diverse clinical presentation that range from asymptomatic patients to different degrees of menorrhagia, commonly associated with previous pregnancy or uterine trauma. This case report describes a 36‐year‐old woman who presented with ultrasound diagnosis of interstitial pregnancy on residual right tube stump 4 months after a laparoscopic salpingectomy for extrauterine pregnancy. She started treatment with methotrexate; afterwards serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels and ultrasound follow‐ups were scheduled. While serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels were progressively reducing, transvaginal ultrasound follow‐ups showed a persistent anechoic mass on right rube stump, with increased peripheral high flow vascularity: highly suspicious for a uterine arteriovenous malformation. A laparoscopy was performed with a tumorectomy of the mass. The histopathological exam of the specimen confirmed uterine arteriovenous malformation. The development of patient‐specific induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) offered interesting insights in modeling the pathogenesis of Charcot‐Marie‐Tooth (CMT) disease and thus we decided to explore the phenotypes of iPSCs derived from a single CMT patient carrying a mutant ATP1A1 allele (p.Pro600Ala). iPSCs clones generated from CMT and control fibroblasts, were induced to differentiate into neural precursors and then into post‐mitotic neurons. Control iPSCs differentiated into neuronal precursors and then into post‐mitotic neurons within 6‐8 days. On the contrary, the differentiation of CMT iPSCs was clearly defective. Electrophysiological properties confirmed that post‐mitotic neurons were less mature compared to the normal counterpart. The impairment of in vitro differentiation of CMT iPSCs only concerned with the neuronal pathway, because they were able to differentiate into mesendodermal cells and other ectodermal derivatives. ATP1A1 was undetectable in the few neuronal cells derived from CMT iPSCs. ATP1A1 gene mutation (p.Pro600Ala), responsible for a form of axonal CMT disease, is associated in vitro with a dramatic alteration of the differentiation of patient‐derived iPSCs into post‐mitotic neurons. Given the link between visual stimuli and memory, children with dyslexia could benefit from research discovering what visual stimuli they find more pleasing and memorable. People like natural landscapes (e.g.,forests) more than human-made (e.g.,cityscapes) or "combined" landscapes (i.e.,combination of human-made and natural components, e.g.,tires in a meadow). The purpose was to determine if the greater likability for natural generalized to children with dyslexia and age-equivalent controls and if photograph type impacted recognition rates after the short and long term. All children liked natural landscape photographs the most but paid longer attention to combined landscape photographs. Both groups recognized all photograph types at a high rate after the short retention interval, but after the long interval, the children with dyslexia had better memory, especially for combined photographs. On the basis of these results, we advise educators to incorporate images of natural landscapes into the learning context in order to create a more aesthetically pleasing environment or to infuse combined images for a more engaging and memorable environment. Pseudomonas syringae is described as a species complex, containing P. syringae‐related species classified into 13 phylogroups and 23 clades. Pseudomonas syringae is one of the main pathogens of fruit trees, affecting nut trees, hazelnut and kiwi, pome and stone fruits. Bacterial canker of apricots is an important disease in regions of production with cold winters and conducive soils. This work characterizes the bacteria able to induce canker in apricots isolated in different French orchards. Bacteria from four phylogroups were able to induce canker. The pathogenicity to apricot was not linked to the pathogenicity to the three herbaceous species and cherry fruits tested, and was not always related to hypersensitive reaction on tobacco and ice nucleation activity. Bacteria pathogenic to apricot belong to phylogroups 01, 02, 03 and 07. The bacteria of phylogroups 01a and 07a (Pseudomonas viridiflava) characterized in this work have not previously been described as pathogenic to apricot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two distinct genomic disorders have been linked to Xq28‐gains, namely Xq28‐duplications including MECP2 and Int22h1/Int22h2‐mediated duplications involving RAB39B. Here, we describe six unrelated patients, five males and one female, with Xq28‐gains distal to MECP2 and proximal to the Int22h1/Int22h2 low copy repeats. Comparison with patients carrying overlapping duplications in the literature defined the MidXq28‐duplication syndrome featuring intellectual disability, language impairment, structural brain malformations, microcephaly, seizures and minor craniofacial features. The duplications overlapped for 108 kb including FLNA, RPL10 and GDI1 genes, highly expressed in brain and candidates for the neurologic phenotype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two novel NO photodonors (NOPDs) based on BODIPY and Rhodamine antennae activatable with the highly biocompatible green light are reported. Both NOPDs exhibit considerable fluorescence emission and release NO with remarkable quantum efficiencies. The combination of the photoreleasing and emissive performance for both compounds is superior to those exhibited by other NOPDs based on similar light‐harvesting centres, making them very intriguing for image‐guided phototherapeutic applications. Preliminary biological data prove their easy visualization in cell environment due to the intense green and orange‐red fluorescence and their photodynamic action on cancer cells due to the NO photo‐liberated. Aim: This study determined cardiovascular impairment in young children with obstructive respiratory disease who were assessed using the opening interrupter technique (RINT).Methods: This pilot study enrolled 41 children who had been referred to pulmonology and allergology specialists at the University of Catania, Italy, from March to July 2017: 23 (mean age 4.13 ± 0.62 years) had chronic coughs and wheezing and 18 controls (mean age 4.27 ± 0.66 years) had obstructive chest disease, but were otherwise healthy. Airway resistance was evaluated using RINT and cardiac function by studying the ejection fraction, pulmonary artery systolic pressure (PASP), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion and tricuspid flow propagation velocity (TFPV).Results: The RINT and PASP values were significantly higher in the patient group when compared to the controls, but the TFPV values were lower. A direct and significant Spearman's correlation coefficient (r) between RINT and PASP values was observed (r = 0.81). We found a significant inverse correlation between RINT and TFPV (r = -0.83), as well as TFPV and PASP (r = -0.78).Conclusion: This study showed that children with obstructive respiratory diseases had a major risk of cardiovascular impairment. Rationale: Protein dynamics are fundamental for biological activity. Direct surface functionalization with these biomolecules often creates regions presenting non‐homogeneous and altered protein functionality. Aptamers have been shown to be an effective method to enhance the biocompatibility of biomaterials by acting as docking points for biomolecules capable of improving cell responses and the colonization/proliferation processes. Here mass spectrometry (MS) was successfully applied as an analytical approach to study the interactions between a fibronectin fragment (FN) and anti‐fibronectin aptamers in solution and on a chitosan film. Methods: A 30 kDa N‐terminal fibronectin fragment, a ssDNA anti‐fibronectin 40 nucleotide long aptamer and chitosan 95/50 (degree of deacetylation 92.6–97.5%; molecular weight 80–220 kDa) were used. First, the dynamics of the FN in aqueous solution, in the presence or absence of anti‐FN‐specific DNA aptamers, were described. Thus, the same study was carried out on 2% (w/w) chitosan‐based films, functionalized with FN alone or through aptamers as selective spacers. Results: Amide hydrogen/deuterium exchange mass spectrometry (HDX‐MS) analysis identified the SYRIGDTWSKKDNRGNL and YRVGDTYERPKDSMI, YVVGETWEKPYQGWMM and WERTYLGNAL fragments as presumably involved in the interaction of FN with aptamers. MS findings indicated the improved functionality of FN on chitosan when aptamers were used as selective spacer, and this may explain why cells preferentially attached to aptamer‐bound FN rather than on chitosan‐FN films. Conclusions: Aptamers did not affect the amount of adsorbed FN, but influenced its conformation enhancing its biological activity toward adhesion and growth of osteoblasts. HDX‐MS data allowed the identification of the FN/aptamer interaction regions. Differences in FN flexibility on the chitosan film in the presence or absence of the aptamer were established providing insights at the molecular level to better understand the protein biological functionality on cell proliferation. The definition of performance limit states for progressive collapse design and assessment of civil structures is an open issue and deserves special attention in view of future building codes and standards. In this study, the main findings of a multilevel sensitivity analysis are presented to characterize the progressive collapse capacity of a selected class of modern European buildings having a reinforced concrete framed structure. After that a group of capacity model properties are assumed as random variables on the basis of earlier studies, the sensitivity of both ultimate load capacity and corresponding maximum and residual drifts to the ultimate steel strain and location of column‐removal scenario is assessed. Then, the influence of the capacity model properties on maximum drift demand corresponding to a code‐compliant design gravity load is evaluated. Finally, five performance limit states associated with increasing levels of damage are introduced and the corresponding load capacity is quantified under varying capacity model properties. The regulation of cytochrome P450 activity is often achieved by structural transitions induced by substrate binding. We describe the conformational transition experienced upon binding by the P450 OleP, an epoxygenase involved in oleandomycin biosynthesis. OleP bound to the substrate analog 6DEB crystallized in 2 forms: one with an ensemble of open and closed conformations in the asymmetric unit and another with only the closed conformation. Characterization of OleP-6DEB binding kinetics, also using the P450 inhibitor clotrimazole, unveiled a complex binding mechanism that involves slow conformational rearrangement with the accumulation of a spectroscopically detectable intermediate where 6DEB is bound to open OleP. Data reported herein provide structural snapshots of key precatalytic steps in the OleP reaction and explain how structural rearrangements induced by substrate binding regulate activity.
