Background: As the global population ages and the prevalence of dementia rises, telemedicine has garnered attention as a means of delivering care to a frail cognitively‐impaired population through a virtual interface. The benefits of telemedicine‐based in person patient‐physician encounters include increased access to healthcare irrespective of distance, as well as reduction in travel costs and carbon emissions. While Telemedicine has proven feasible and effective in other areas of medicine, its use in a cognitively‐impaired population is less well studied and poses unique challenges. The current literature review aims to compare and contrast the use of televisits across neurodegenerative disease, with a particular focus on dementia care. Method: We performed a systematic review of the literature published between January 2000 and January 2020. Databases OVID Medline and PubMed were searched using keywords "Telemedicine", "Neurodegenerative disease", "Dementia" and their respective synonyms. Eligible articles were selected after screening the titles and abstracts. Studies were included if they examined the use of virtual healthcare visits (i.e. televisits) in the management of patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Result: The search yielded 503 potentially eligible articles. After further screening, a total of 35 articles met inclusion criteria. Positive benefits of televisits across neurodegenerative diseases included high rates of patient satisfaction, feasibility and validity. A particular challenge that emerged as unique in dementia care is a lack of interpersonal engagement. Conclusion: While telemedicine has clear potential benefits for neurodegenerative disease management, further research is required to assess long‐term clinical and quality of life outcomes in patients with dementia. Aim: Surf zones are crucial nursery habitats for the early life stages of fish species associated with typical coastal ecosystems. However, little is known about the temporal patterns and drivers of fish assemblages in tropical surf zones. This study aimed to assess the (1) main changes in fish community structure throughout 1 year, (2) seasonal dynamic patterns in fish assemblages, and (3) key factors influencing fish assemblages in the tropical surf zones. Location: Gaolong Bay, Wenchang City, Hainan Island, China. Methods: Fish sampling was conducted monthly from June 2021 to May 2022 using a beach seine net. Fish species were identified using both morphological and molecular analyses. Kruskal–Wallis test, analysis of similarity, non‐metric multidimensional scaling analysis, and similarity percentage analysis were used to investigate the temporal fish assemblage patterns. Generalised additive models and canonical correspondence analysis were used to assess how environmental variables influence fish assemblages. Results: We identified 83 fish species, which were grouped into three ecotypes based on their primary habitat: coral reef‐seagrass‐associated species (CS) (35), mangrove‐estuarine‐associated species (ME) (30), and common coastal‐estuarine‐associated species (CE) (18). Most captured individuals were juveniles, and fish abundance and diversity were highest in May. Most CS species were abundant between March and May. ME and most CE species were dominant from June to August, and Mugilidae (CE) was abundant between October and February. Furthermore, surf fish assemblages were substantially influenced by tidal level, water temperature, conductivity, pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. Conclusions: Juvenile fish were abundant in May and fish species with three ecotypes alternate in the surf zones throughout the year. Counter to much current thinking, March maybe the spawn peak of most fish species in the studied area, and we suggest that the fishing ban period could start from March instead of May in the inshore areas of Hainan Island. Examination of the holotype of Synodontis nigrita, the type specimens of both its (potential) junior synonyms, Synodontis fascipinna and Synodontis ornatus, and an additional 306 specimens, previously identified as S. nigrita, confirmed that the interorbital width is the most important diagnostic character to distinguish S. nigrita from its Nilo‐Sudanic (N‐S), and Upper and Lower Guinea ichthyofaunal province congeners. Results revealed that this species has a typical N‐S distribution. In addition, the occurrence of Synodontis violaceus in the Cross River is not corroborated. The western flank of the Central Andes offers a unique geomorphological record of large paleolandslides that are well preserved on long time‐scales (i.e. ≥Pleistocene) due to the long‐lasting aridity of this region. However, the lack of chronological constraints on those landslides limits our understanding of the respective role of tectonics and climate on their triggering. Here, we report new 10Be surface exposure dating obtained on one of those giant slope‐failures: the Limaxina landslide (northern Chile, 19°S). Five tightly grouped exposure‐ages (one outlier discarded) point to a single landslide failure at 80 ± 4 ka. This timing being consistent with others local records of a wet episode in the Atacama Desert, it suggests a primary role of climate‐forcing on landslide activity in this region, calling to further slope failures dating in the arid Central western Andes to explore landscapes responses to Quaternary climate oscillations and extreme events. A new species, Parakneria alytogrammus, is described from the main stream of the Upper Lufira River. This species is easily distinguished from its congeners from the Congo Basin by its unique colouration, consisting of a low number of transversal bands on each of the caudal‐fin lobes, 2 (vs. 3–5) and the presence of an uninterrupted lateral mid‐longitudinal black band in fresh and preserved specimens (vs. absent). In addition, the new species differs from its Upper Lualaba congeners by the narrow width of its pectoral‐fin base, 4.8–5.6% LS [vs. wider, 8.2–10.1% for P. lufirae, 8.6% LS for P. damasi (holotype), and 7.6–7.9% LS for P. thysi]. Finally, it differs from the only species currently known from the Luapula‐Mweru system, P. malaissei, by having a short post‐dorsal distance, 36.4–36.6% LS (vs. longer, 38.6–41.1% LS) and a short post‐pelvic distance of 40.0–40.6% LS (vs. longer, 41.4–44.1% LS). Mitochondrial DNA‐haplotypes of P. alytogrammus sp. nov. form a clade, which is sister to the P. thysi clade, and from which it diverges by a genetic (Kimura 2‐parameter and uncorrected p) distance of 0.7% in the COI‐barcoding locus. The Upper Lufira, one of the sub‐basins of the Upper Congo Basin, remains poorly explored relative to its fish fauna. In contrast, the region is well explored with regard to its mineral wealth. Unfortunately, mining exploitation is carried out in the region without proper concern for the environment. Sympathetic overactivation is one of the main contributors to development and progress of hypertension. Renal denervation (RDN) has been evidenced by series of clinical trials for its efficacy and safety to treat overactivated sympathetic nervous system induced diseases. However, the results were inconsistent and not all patients benefited from RDN. Appropriate patient selection and intraoperative factors to improve the efficacy of RDN need to be solved urgently. Over the decade, research studies on the correlations between indicators and the antihypertensive effects have been conducted and made a fairly well progress. Herein, we comprehensively reviewed the research studies on how to make RDN more predictable or improve the efficacy of RDN and summarized these potential indicators or devices which might be applied in clinical settings. During the Late Pleistocene, an ice cap temporarily rested on the highest summit of the Black Forest, Feldberg, and on the surrounding region. Moraines inside the last glaciation maximum ice extent document subsequent glacial standstills and/or re‐advances, but the chronology of the deglaciation remains largely unknown. In Sankt Wilhelmer Tal, moraines were mapped, and suitable moraine boulders were sampled for 10Be cosmic ray exposure (CRE) dating. Equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) during moraine formation were reconstructed to evaluate whether these can be used for local stratigraphical correlations. Geomorphological mapping revealed numerous ice‐marginal positions in the main valley and in two tributary valleys. CRE ages and ELAs indicate two discrete phases of glacial standstills and/or re‐advances by 17–16 ka at the latest and no later than 14 ka, respectively. Differing ELAs across the study area preclude the use of ELAs for local stratigraphical correlations. Recalculated 10Be CRE ages from other localities in Central Europe indicate similar periods of moraine formation, thus raising the question of a common climatic forcing. Additional sets of CRE ages are needed to answer this question. In addition, future studies should concentrate on determining the age of the last glaciation maximum in the Black Forest. Preterm births accounted for over 10% of all U.S. live births in 2019 and the rate is rising. Neonatal stressors, especially procedural pain, experienced by preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) have been associated with neurodevelopmental impairments. Parental care can alleviate stress during stressful or painful procedures; however, infants in the NICU often receive reduced parental care compared with their peers. Animal studies suggest that decreasedmaternal care similarly impairs neurodevelopment but also influences the effects of neonatal pain. It is important to mimic both stressors in animal models of neonatal stress exposure. In this study, researchers investigated the individual and combined impact of neonatal pain and maternal isolation on reelin protein levels and cellular proliferation in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of 8 days old and adult rats. Exposure to either stressor individually, but not both, increased reelin levels in the dentate gyrus of adult females without significantly altering reelin levels in adult males. However, cell proliferation levels at either age were unaffected by the early-life stressors. These results suggest that each earlylife stressor has a unique effect on markers of brain development and more research is needed to further investigate their distinct influences. The chubbyhead barb, Enteromius anoplus, as currently described, is the most widely distributed freshwater fish in South Africa. The species occurs in almost all the major river systems across the country, with the exception of the small coastal drainages on the south coast. The use of a comprehensive data set of mitochondrial (mtDNA) cytochrome b (cyt b) sequences uncovered the presence of four distinct lineages or operational taxonomic units (OTUs) within E. anoplus: (a) the Gouritz lineage endemic to the Gouritz River system, (b) the Olifants lineage endemic to the Olifants‐Doring River system, (c) the Orange lineage endemic to the Orange River system and (d) the Eastern Cape lineage which is distributed across six river systems from the Great Fish to the Buffalo rivers in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The present study provides a new diagnosis for E. anoplus s.s. (the Gouritz lineage), revalidates Enteromius cernuus (the Olifants lineage) and Enteromius oraniensis (the Orange lineage) as distinct species. The study also provides a description for a new species, Enteromius mandelai sp. nov (the Eastern Cape lineage). E. cernuus and E. mandelai differ from both E. anoplus and E. oraniensis by having a complete lateral line (vs. an incomplete lateral line in the latter species). E. cernuus further differs from the other three species by having long maxillary barbels which reach or exceed the vertical through the middle of the eye and the lowest number of circumpendicular scales (10–12 vs. 12–16 for the other three species). E. oraniensis is distinctive from the other three species by having inconspicuous barbels. These findings add to the growing body of literature that shows that the freshwater fishes of the Cape Fold and adjacent freshwater ecoregions have narrow geographic ranges. This has ramifications for conservation planning and management, as well as the understanding of the evolutionary history of the stream fishes in these global endemic hotspots. Aside from ornamental uses, there is growing interest in using killifishes for a multiplicity of purposes including baitfish and mosquito biocontrol. This experiment explored the spawning habits and embryonic development of the banded lampeye, Aplocheilichthys spilauchen in ex situ freshwater (0.04‰) and brackish water (5.01‰) to ascertain the captive breeding prospects for mosquito control in areas where they occur. Significantly higher number of eggs were laid in the brackish water than the freshwater (X2 = 1613.0, P < 0.05), and black mop was the most preferred spawning substrate, followed by green, blue and white mops. Microscopic monitoring of embryos revealed that cleavage occurred within the first 30 min after fertilization, organogenesis commenced on average in the 25th hour and hatching in approximately 230 h. Although freshwater eggs were relatively bigger than brackish water eggs and certain embryonic developmental stages occurred faster in the freshwater than brackish water, these differences were overall not significant and had no effects on the development and hatching. The observed outcome that A. spilauchen can be optimally propagated with black mops in brackish water offers a significant step in its use for the mosquito biocontrol programme, as well as other potential uses not yet explored. Brassica carinata is a non‐food, low‐carbon, none‐to‐low indirect land‐use change impact oilseed feedstock grown for sustainable biofuels, bioproducts, and high protein seed meal. Understanding carinata growth and development is critical to the development of best management practices for maximum productivity and profitability of double‐cropped farming systems. Field experiments were conducted during 2017–2018 (Year 1) and 2018–2019 (Year 2) winter–spring growing seasons in Quincy, Florida, to quantify the total aboveground dry matter accumulation (TDM), allocation, growth, nutrient uptake, and seed quality. The two carinata cultivars Avanza 641 and AX17012 accumulated 10826 and 9343 kg TDM ha−1 in Year 1 and 9655 and 10,642 kg TDM ha−1 in Year 2, respectively, at harvest maturity. The proportion of DM in the vegetative parts such as leaves and stems decreased, and the DM in reproductive structures such as silique walls and seeds increased with maturity. Seed yield (SY) was similar between cultivars but differed between years with Year 1 (2732 kg ha−1), producing 29% greater SY than Year 2 (1929 kg ha−1). Carinata primary stem has 17–20 leaf nodes, with 75%–88% of the axillary meristems producing primary and secondary branches. Crop growth rate (CGR) increased from vegetative to pod development for both cultivars in Year 1, while in Year 2, AX17012 and Avanza 641 attained maximum CGR at the pod development and bolting/flowering stages, respectively. Maximum seasonal nutrient uptake in leaves, stems, and siliques generally occurred in the early, mid, and late season, respectively, in both years. Seed weight, oil, monounsaturated fatty acids, C18:3, C20:1, and C22:1 concentrations increased with plant age, whereas protein, glucosinolate, polyunsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids, C18:1, and C18:2 concentrations decreased with plant maturity. The introduction of new technologies such as the new families of IEEE, third or fourth generation with long term evolution support, and WiMAX provide support for high data rate in heterogeneous networks. Providing uninterrupted and continuous connectivity across these technologies is a challenging job for the researchers in the last decade. However, researchers have worked hard to develop a generic platform for the interoperability between different networks. The IEEE has made one of the important developments in this regard in the form of IEEE 802.21: media independent handover (MIH) standard. Recently, several research works have been carried out to enhance the functionality and to work of this standard. In this article, we surveyed the well‐known and important schemes that have been proposed for migration of a session from Wi‐Fi to cellular and WiMAX technologies based on MIH standard. Children born preterm display altered sensory processing, which may manifest as hyper‐ and/or hypo‐sensitivity to sensory information. In this vulnerable population, exposure to neonatal pain‐related stress is associated with altered stress regulation, as indexed by alterations in cortisol levels. It is unknown whether sensory processing behaviors are also affected by early life adversity, and whether dysregulated cortisol is related to sensory processing problems in preterm children. We examined relationships between neonatal pain‐related stress, sensory processing profiles and cortisol levels at age 4 years, and whether pathways were sex‐specific. In a longitudinal prospective cohort study, N = 146 infants born 24–32 weeks gestational age were recruited from BC Women's Hospital, Vancouver, BC, Canada; neonatal factors were collected from daily chart review. At age 4 years, saliva to assay cortisol was collected three times across cognitive assessment (pre‐test, during, end) and parents completed the Short Sensory Profile questionnaire. Using generalized linear modeling, independent of other neonatal factors, higher number of invasive procedures (pain/stress) was associated with more sensory processing problems (total, hypo‐ and hyper‐sensitivity) for girls only. After accounting for neonatal factors, greater cortisol output across the assessment was associated with more total sensory processing problems in girls only, and hypersensitivity to sensory input in both boys and girls. Findings suggest that in children born very preterm, how a child responds to sensory input and cortisol reactivity to stress are related but may have different precursors. The Persian Gulf and Oman Sea are characterized by an interesting paleoclimatic history and different ecological settings, and offer a unique study area to investigate the genetic structure of marine organisms including fishes. The Ornate goby Istigobius ornatus is widely distributed throughout the tropical Indo‐West Pacific including the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Here, we present the population structure, genetic diversity, and demographic history of four populations of I. ornatus from the latter two regions using the D‐loop marker of mitochondrial DNA. The results reveal a shallow genealogy, a star‐like haplotype network, significance of neutrality tests, and unimodal mismatch distribution. This is concordant with a recent demographic expansion of I. ornatus in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea at about 63,000–14,000 years ago, which appears to be related to Late Pleistocene sea level fall and rise. The results of the pairwise Fst estimates imply high gene flow along the coast of the Persian Gulf, which is probably due to larval dispersion, whereas the Oman Sea population clearly differs from all Persian Gulf populations. The AMOVA result indicates that 7.74% of the variation is related to differences among ecoregions, while inter‐ and intra‐population differences explained −3.20% and 95.47% of the variation, respectively. The haplotype network depicts two groups of haplotypes, most of them were specific to the Persian Gulf. No further evidence for geographic lineage substructuring was evident. The Mantel test result indicates that isolation by distance is not the main mechanism that promoted the genetic differentiation among the studied populations of I. ornatus. We suggest that cumulative effects of ecological and geographic barriers such as salinity, oceanographic conditions, and the presence of the Strait of Hormuz have shaped the genetic structure of I. ornatus in the Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. Charge trapping memory has become a promising memory device due to its reliability, low cost, and simplicity. Its storage mechanism has attracted increasing attention. The properties of the storage layer are very important for the research of the device performance and mechanism. Herein, the technologies for the charge trapping properties of the storage layer are introduced first and then the study of charge trapping by electrostatic force microscopy (EFM) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) is reviewed. The properties of trapped charges for inorganic, polymers, nanomaterials, and organic small molecules are reviewed, when different experimental parameters such as the atmospheric moisture, injection time\bias, and hydrophilicity of films are used. Based on literature, museum collections and three recent expeditions, an annotated species list of the Lake Edward, East Africa, drainage system is presented, excluding the endemic haplochromines. A total of 34 non‐Haplochromis species belonging to 10 families and 21 genera are recorded from the system. Three of these are endemic and two others have been introduced in the region. Six species are new records for the Lake Edward system. A species accumulation curve indicates that we probably covered most of the non‐Haplochromis species in the area sampled during the recent expeditions, but undetected species might still be present in the Congolese part of the system, which is poorly sampled. A comparison of the species list with those of neighbouring basins confirmed the placement of the Lake Edward system within the east‐coast ichthyofaunal province. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Within a comparative morphological framework, Hippopotamyrus aelsbroecki, only known from the holotype originating from Lubumbashi, most probably the Lubumbashi River, a left bank subaffluent of the Luapula River, is reallocated to the genus Cyphomyrus. This transfer is motivated by the fact that H. aelsbroecki possesses a rounded or vaulted predorsal profile, an insertion of the dorsal fin far anterior to the level of the insertion of the anal fin, and a compact, laterally compressed and deep body. In addition, a new species of Cyphomyrus is described from the Lufira basin, Cyphomyrus lufirae. Cyphomyrus lufirae was collected in large parts of the Middle Lufira, upstream of the Kyubo Falls and just downstream of these falls in the lower Lufira and its nearby left bank affluent, the Luvilombo River. The new species is distinguished from all its congeners, that is, firstly, from C. aelsbroecki, C. cubangoensis and C. discorhynchus, by a low number of dorsal fin rays, 27‐32 (vs. higher, 36 (37), 34 (33‐41) an 38 (38‐40), respectively) and, secondly, from C. aelsbroecki, C. cubangoensis, and C. discorhynchus by a large prepelvic distance, 41.0–43.8% LS (vs. shorter, 39.7%, 38.9–39.1% and 37.0–41.0% LS, respectively). The description of yet another new species for the Upemba National Park and the Kundelungu National Park further highlights their importance for fish protection and conservation in the area. New collections from the Yangambi Biosphere Reserve (YBR) and Okapi Wildlife Reserve (OWR) revealed the presence of two groups of specimens similar to, but different from Marcusenius moorii. To study both these groups, an integrated morphological and genetic (mtDNA, cytb) approach was used. This study revealed that one of the two groups is conspecific with Marcusenius lambouri, a junior synonym of M. moorii, which is herein revalidated, with M. mooriilongulus as its junior synonym. Marcusenius lambouri differs from M. moorii by a higher number of lateral line scales (44–46 vs. 40–43), a shorter pectoral‐fin length (14.6–19.9 vs. 20.3–25.2% standard length; LS) and a more elongated body due to a usually shallower middle body depth (19.8–26.5 vs. 26.3–35.9% LS). The other group revealed to be a new species for science, Marcusenius verheyenorum, which can be distinguished from its congeners with eight circumpeduncular scales by the following unique combination of characters: a rounded head with a terminal mouth; a short and deep caudal peduncle (middle caudal‐peduncle depth, 44.9–54.6% caudal‐peduncle length; LCP), a deep body (middle body depth, 27.7–34.2% LS), 38–43 scales on the lateral line, 40–41 vertebrae, 20–21 dorsal‐fin rays and 26 anal‐fin rays. Some specimens previously attributed to M. moorii were examined and reassigned to M. lambouri or M. verheyenorum. As a result, M. moorii and M. lambouri occur in sympatry in the middle Congo Basin, with the distribution area of M. moorii still further extending into the lower Congo Basin. Instead, the distribution of M. verheyenorum is limited to some right bank tributaries of the upstream part of the middle Congo Basin. Two museum records from the Lilanda River (YBR), collected in the 1950s and previously identified as M. moorii, were re‐identified as belonging to the new species, M. verheyenorum. However, the species now seems locally extinct in that region, which reflects the significant anthropogenic effects even within this reserve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new species of the chromidotilapiine genus Thysochromis, is described from the Noumbi and Kouilou River drainages in the Republic of Congo. Based on the current investigation, Thysochromis is resolved as containing two geographically disjunct species, T. ansorgii from localities in the upper Guinean ichthyofaunal province (Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin and Nigeria) and Thysochromis emili sp. nov. restricted to coastal regions of the Republic of Congo in the lower Guinean province. Hoda reported the presence of over thirty species of the family Gobiidae with inadequate taxonomic descriptions and lacking fish images lead them either dubious or misidentification of some species in Pakistan. In addition, nomenclature of some species is now modified in international database and Fishbase. This study was aimed to provide a lucid taxonomic description and an image of each species in line with international database to ease biologists in identification and further investigations on gobies. Over 2 years (2017–2019) sampling conducted in lagoons, estuarine, mangroves, rocky ledges and mudflat some 662 specimens of eleven species Acentrogobius moloanus (2)†, Aulopareia ocellata (2)†, Boleophthalmus dussumieri (409), Glossogobius guiris (20), Gobius cobitis (38)†, Istigobius ornatus (40), Oxyurichthys microlepis (2), Periophthalmus barbarus (1), Periophthalmus variabilis (7)†, Scartelaos tenuis (81), and Trypauchen vagina (60) were collected († species recorded for the first time). Among sampled population 61% belongs to B. dussumieri whereas population of A. moloanus, A. ocellata and O. microlepis found to be <0.3% and Periophthalmus variabilis was merely 0.2% during entire study period. Merely eleven species sampled in the present study from versatile habitats reveals that either species reported by Hoda were may be overlooked or rampant anthropogenic activities has eliminated around 60% of the gobies population in Pakistan. This study is the first to provide detailed information about gobies their status and highlight conservation and management concern of an ecological important fish group in the northern Arabian Sea, Pakistan. The Kahuzi‐Biega National Park (KBNP), situated mainly in the Eastern Highlands Ecoregion of the Upper Congo basin, is drained by the Lowa and Ulindi rivers, and some western affluents of Lake Kivu. In this study, the first list of the fish diversity of these systems is provided based on museum collections and complemented, for the Lowa River system and the western Lake Kivu affluents, with recently collected specimens (2013–2017). A total of 118 species are reported from the Lowa basin, 22 from the Ulindi basin and seven from these Lake Kivu affluents. Within the Lowa and Ulindi, respectively, five and one species, all cichlids, have been introduced. Currently, 51 species are reported from within the park, only two of which have been reported from the highlands, i.e., Amphilius kivuensis from the Luha, the source of the Luka River, and Clarias liocephalus from the headwaters of the Lake Kivu' affluents. With a total of 30 species, Cyprinidae is by far the largest family, representing 25% of the total species diversity of the Lowa basin. It is followed by Mormyridae with 13 species (11%), Alestidae and Mochokidae with 10 species each (8%), Clariidae and Amphiliidae with eight species (7%), and Distichodontidae with six species (5%). Seven new species for science were discovered and 11 species were found to be endemic to the Lowa system. Although further exploration is needed, this underscores the importance of the KBNP in protecting the fish fauna of the Lowa basin but also highlights the park's limited coverage of the fish fauna of the Lowa basin. Sympathetic overdrive contributes to the derangement of glucose metabolism evident in clinical conditions, such as obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, and others. Targeting the sympathetic nervous system directly therefore appears as an attractive therapeutic approach to restore impaired glucose metabolism. Indeed, lifestyle interventions, including healthier diets and exercise, have been shown to exert their beneficial effects at least in part by reducing sympathetic nervous system activity. Pharmacologic inhibition of exaggerated central sympathetic outflow has also been demonstrated to beneficially impact on body weight and glucose and lipid metabolism. More recently, catheter‐based renal denervation, an intervention applied predominantly to lower elevated blood pressure in patients with resistant hypertension, revealed salutary effects on glucose metabolism. Here, we review the mechanisms that contribute to the beneficial effects of targeting the sympathetic nervous system directly and discuss how these approaches may best be embedded in routine clinical practice. Polarisation current profile varies non‐linearly with a magnitude of charging voltage. This implies performance parameters obtained from polarisation–depolarisation current and those measured using specialised equipment cannot always be compared. Results reported in this study suggested that the non‐linearity in insulation response can be explained in terms of the interaction between space charge and insulation conductivity. The influence of using different charging voltages and its effect on performance parameter calculation is investigated in this study with the help of laboratory samples. It is shown in this study that with the help of a trained artificial neural network, it is possible to identify the charging voltage at which insulation response exhibits minimum non‐linearity. To test the accuracy of the proposed method performance parameters measured using commercial equipment are compared with those calculated from the polarisation current profile. The present study assessed the aerial and aquatic visual abilities of juvenile grey bichir Polypterus senegalus, fish capable of terrestrial locomotion, by measuring the optokinetic response to stimuli of varying speed and spatial frequency. In water, fish tracked slow‐moving (2° s−1) stimuli moderately well and fast‐moving stimuli very poorly. Spatial acuity was very low compared with many other species, with maximum response observed at 0.05–0.075 stimulus cycles per degree of visual arc; however, it should be noted that adult fish, with their larger eyes, are likely to have somewhat improved spatial acuity. Low spatial acuity and limited stimulus tracking ability might be expected in a nocturnal ambush predator such as P. senegalus, where gaze stabilization may be less crucial and other sensory inputs may have greater importance in perception of the environment. In air, spatial and temporal acuity were both poorer by every measure, but some visual ability persisted. As the eye shows no anatomical specialization for aerial vision, poor vision was expected; however, the large decrease in saccade velocity observed in air trials was unexpected. Stimulus parameters typically have little effect on the characteristics of the saccade, so this finding may suggest that the function of the reflex system itself could be compromised in the aerial vision of some fishes capable of terrestrial locomotion. In this study, results of polarisation and depolarisation currents measured on an insulating liquid are presented. The goal is to contribute to a better understanding of mechanisms occurring at the metal–liquid contact. Electrodes of different metallic nature are associated with the same mineral oil, the metal/liquid/metal structure is submitted to DC voltages and the transient current is recorded with a high sensitive electrometer. The current versus time feature shows that the conduction process is in good compliance with the metal work function rather than with its electric conductivity. The current versus field characteristics indicate a predominance of the ohmic behaviour for the low fields. The space charge limited conduction regime appears as soon as the electrical constraint exceeds ∼1 MV/m, which corresponds to 10% of the breakdown voltage. Schottky injection is suspected to occur from the metal into the liquid since the applied fields are uniform and non‐extremely intensified. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural spawning, early development and larviculture of the ornate goby Istigobius ornatus in captivity were studied for the first time. I. ornatus spawned 46 times from 31 October 2013 to 31 October 2014. Fecundity ranged from 246 to 10,214 eggs per clutch, with an average hatching rate of 77.8% ± 9.9% (M ± SEM). Fertilized eggs (1.31–1.54 × 0.46–0.50 mm in diameter) were adhesive demersal and oval‐shaped. Embryonic development lasted 84 hr at 27.5 ± 0.5°C. Newly hatched larvae [2.12 ± 0.04 mm in total length (TL)] transformed to the juvenile stage completely when TL was 7.79 mm. Effects of different water temperatures (24, 28 and 32°C) and salinities (10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 g/L) on per cent survivals (%) and survival activity indices (SAIs) were tested. Survival was not significantly different under different temperatures; SAIs was significantly higher at 28°C. Larvae showed the significantly higher survival and SAIs at salinities 10–30 g/L than at 35 and 40 g/L. Effect of different prey densities on survival was significantly higher in 7 days post hatch larvae fed 20 and 30 rotifers/ml. Abstract: The Hangay Mountains are a high‐elevation, low‐relief landscape within the greater Mongolian Plateau of central Asia. New bedrock apatite (U‐Th)/He single‐grain ages from the Hangay span ~70 to 200 Ma, with a mean of 122.7 ± 24.0 Ma (2σ). Detrital apatite samples from the Selenga and Orkhon Rivers, north of the mountains, yield dominant (U‐Th)/He age populations of ~115 to 130 Ma, as well as an older population not seen in the Hangay granitic bedrock data. These low‐temperature data record regional exhumation of central Mongolia in the Mesozoic followed by limited erosion of <1–2 km since the Cretaceous, ruling out rapid exhumation of this magnitude associated with any late Cenozoic uplift. Apatite (U‐Th)/He age elevation patterns suggest long‐term thermal stability of the upper crust and thermal model inversions require late Mesozoic uplift, spatially variable exhumation, and/or relief evolution to produce the observed cooling ages in the Hangay. Regionally, modeling suggests reduction of topography in the Jurassic followed by relief growth that was completed by the mid‐Cretaceous. These results support Mesozoic topographic evolution and relative stability of the landscape throughout the Cenozoic with very little subsequent exhumation. Alpine cirques and intact moraines are indicative of more recent, modest climate‐driven erosion in the higher peaks of the western Hangay. These data reinforce the notion that in the absence of strong tectonic or climate forcing, erosion is limited and remnant landscapes can persist over tens to hundreds of millions of years in a state of disequilibrium. Abstract: A simple, facile, selective and cost effective electrochemical method is proposed for the determination of telmisartan (TMS); a drug used for hypertension. A sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) modified edge plane pyrolytic graphite (EPPG) is prepared by simple immersion of EPPG in SDS solution at concentration greater than critical micelle concentration (CMC). The modified sensor exhibited superior sensing properties towards the oxidation of TMS. The modified surface was characterized by using the Energy dispersive X‐ray analysis, Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The quantitative investigations of the TMS were performed by applying the square wave voltammetry. The micelles of SDS form a pseudo complex with cation radical of TMS and catalyse the oxidation. The proposed sensor shows the linear calibration plot in the concentration range of 5–100 μM with sensitivity 0.2983 μA/μM and the limit of the detection of the sensor was found to be 0.082 μM. The specificity of the developed sensor was also evaluated in the presence of commonly present interfering substances in biological samples. The amount of TMS excreted in urine of the patients undergoing treatment has also been determined. The proposed method can be effectively applied for the investigation of TMS in pharmaceutical formulations and biological samples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Based on morphological data and analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene and nuclear (S7 intron 1) DNA sequences, the phylogenetic relationships of all Pollimyrus species known from the Omo‐Turkana enclosed basin and Nile system below the Murchison Falls were solved. A mormyrid “Pollimyrus” petherici is distantly related to all other studied Pollimyrus species and clusters together with Cyphomyrus species forming with the later a monophyletic group. Moreover, the West African (but not the Congo River) populations of Cyphomyrus psittacus, the type species of the genus, seem to be conspecific to C. petherici. That is, the range of the genus Cyphomyrus is extended toward the Nile and Omo‐Turkana basins. This genus belongs to the large clade widely distributed in sub‐Saharian Africa and characterized by the presence of a chin appendage. Significance of this character for mormyrid phylogeny is discussed. Two distinct lineages of Pollimyrus occurring sympatrically in the White Nile tributaries and previously reported as the light and dark forms of Pollimyrus isidori together with five other congeneric species studied form a monophyletic group. The light form apparently represents P. isidori distributed in the Nile system downstream of the Murchison Falls and West Africa; the dark‐colored form (designated as Pollimyrus “D”) represents a distinct phylogenetic lineage inhabiting both the Omo‐Turkana and the White Nile basin. Morphological and ecological data suggest that this form may be conspecific to East African Pollimyrus nigricans or most probably represents a new species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As per international policy agendas on mitigation of greenhouse gas emission, the impact change in land use on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is of major concern. There has been no systematic study carried out to estimate SOC pool in the catchment of hydroelectric reservoirs. An assessment of SOC stock along altitudinal gradient was carried out in the catchment of proposed Kotli Bhel 1A hydroelectric reservoir located in Uttarakhand, India. The SOC stocks were found to be decreasing with altitude, ( i.e. soil under high altitude forests having more SOC and vice versa). The SOC map developed from the normalized difference vegetation index also verified the results and allowed for spatially explicit targeting of potential climate change mitigation efforts through soil carbon sequestration. The results also revealed that the alpine forest soil has a greater potential of C sequestration compared to devdar, oak, and chir species found in the catchment. This information will help policymakers or environmentalists to take preventive measures for afforestation of forest species that can sequester more C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Cervical artery dissection (CeAD) is a frequent manifestation of fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD). However, risk factors for CeAD are unknown. We investigated factors associated with CeAD in the ARCADIA (Assessment of Renal and Cervical Artery Dysplasia) registry. Methods and Results The ARCADIA registry includes women or men aged ≥18 years, with a diagnosis of renal, cervical, or intracranial artery FMD, who were prospectively recruited at 16 university hospitals in France and Belgium. Diagnosis of acute or past CeAD at inclusion was established on imaging according to standard diagnostic criteria. Associations between potential determinants and CeAD were assessed by logistic regression analyses. Among 469 patients (75 men) with FMD, 65 (13.9%) had CeAD. Patients with CeAD were younger, more likely to be men, have a history of migraine, and less likely to have a history of hypertension than patients without CeAD. In the multivariable analysis, male sex (odds ratio [OR], 2.66; 95% CI, 1.34-5.25), history of migraine (OR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.06-3.39), age ≥50 years (OR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.23-0.73), history of hypertension (OR, 0.35; 95% CI, 0.20-0.64), and involvement of ≥3 vascular beds (OR, 2.49; 95% CI, 1.15-5.40) were significantly associated with CeAD. To validate the association between CeAD and sex, we performed a systematic review. We collected additional data on sex from 2 published studies and unpublished data from the US Registry for Fibromuscular Dysplasia and the European/International FMD Registry. In the pooled analysis (289 CeAD, 1933 patients), male sex was significantly associated with CeAD (OR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.41-2.95; I 2 =0%). Conclusions In patients with FMD, male sex and multisite involvement are associated with CeAD, in addition to other previously known risk factors. African diploid barbs (' Barbus', Clypeobarbus, Barboides, etc.) are a group of small cyprinids with a body size less than 20 cm and widely distributed in drainages across Africa. These species constitute a significant component of African freshwater fish fauna. This study is the first to focus on the molecular systematics and biogeography of African diploid barbs ' Barbus' and its African and Asian allies using both mitochondrial and nuclear genes. We test for monophyly of groups, determine interspecific relationships and estimate the time of divergence of 52 species of ' Barbus' and allies using two mitochondrial and four nuclear genes. Resulting trees demonstrate that ' Barbus' and allies ( Systomus, Barboides, Clypeobarbus and African tetraploid barbs) form a strongly supported clade; however, ' Barbus' is not resolved as monophyletic. Divergence time analyses identify the separation between Systomus and ' Barbus' plus African allies may have occurred around 26 MYA. In addition to the phylogenetic results, these findings highlight the need for more thorough taxonomic and systematic studies on ' Barbus' and allies using morphological and additional molecular data and greater taxon sampling, including the type species of the genus Enteromius, ' Barbus' potamogalis. Two new species of Tometes from the Brazilian Shield rapids are described. Tometes kranponhah is endemic to the Xingu River basin, whereas Tometes ancylorhynchus occurs both in the Xingu and the Tocantins-Araguaia River basins. The two species are sympatric in the Xingu drainages and have many similarities in morphology and colouration. Major diagnostic differences are the dark pigmentation on the opercle of T. kranponhah and its distinct snout shape and arrangement of premaxillary teeth. In addition, T. kranponhah is a large fish that is abundant in the Xingu River, whereas T. ancylorhynchus is a medium-sized fish for which there are few records. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current study aims to update the range of Aphanius fasciatus occurring in inland aquatic systems, and to characterise the length-weight relationship of specimens caught in inland waters of the Northern Sahara of Algeria. Although the known distribution of A. fasciatus is restricted to coastal waters including islands of the Mediterranean region, visits to 39 hydrosystems in Northeast Algeria revealed the presence of the species at two sites: Oued Still and Lake Temacine. Both sites are in the Sahara Desert of Algeria, where the climate is hot and hyperarid. The surveyed populations perform their entire life cycle at the same sites. Analysis of a sample composed of 27 individuals captured in Oued Still allowed determination of the length-weight relationship. On average, females measured 4.2 ± 0.6 cm in length and weighed 1.1 ± 0.5 g; males were 3.2 ± 0.6 cm and 0.5 ± 0.2 g. Growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation for A. fasciatus were estimated at Lt = 5.5145 (1-exp (-0.341(t-0.0049))), Wt = 2.6692 (1-exp (-0.271t))³. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many dielectric thin films for energy storage capacitors fail by thermal breakdown events under high-field drive conditions. The lifetime of the device can be improved under conditions where the current path within the defect regions in dielectrics is eliminated. Self-healing electrodes were developed by depositing a manganese dioxide (MnO2) thin film between the glass substrate and an aluminum film. For this purpose, thin films of MnO2 on boroaluminosilicate glass were fabricated via chemical solution deposition and heat-treated at temperatures in the range 500°C-900°C. The α-MnO2 structure was stabilized by Ba2+ insertion to form the hollandite structure. The phase transition temperature of α-MnO2 to Mn2O3 is strongly dependent on the Ba concentration, with transition temperatures of 600°C and 675°C with Ba concentrations of [Ba]/[Mn] = 0.04 and 0.1, respectively. The electrical resistivity increased from 4.5 Ω·cm for MnO2 to 105 Ω·cm for Mn2O3. Both dielectric breakdown strength and the associated cleared aluminum electrode area increased with an MnO2 interlayer between Al electrodes and the borosilicate glass. The enhancement in dielectric strength was related with self-healing. The associated redox reaction between MnO2 and Mn2O3 was also proved by RAMAN spectroscopy following dielectric breakdown. In a warmer world, soil CO2 emissions are likely to increase. There is still much discussion about which soil organic C (SOC) pools are more sensitive to increasing temperatures. While the temperature sensitivity of C stabilized by biochemical recalcitrance or by sorption to mineral surfaces has been characterized, few studies have been carried out on the temperature sensitivity-expressed as Q10-of C physically protected inside soil macroaggregates (0.2-2 mm). It has been suggested that increasing the availability of labile SOC by exposing C through macroaggregate crushing would decrease Q10, i.e., the temperature dependence of soil CO2 emissions. To test this hypothesis, the temperature dependence of CO2 emissions from C physically protected in macroaggregates was measured through 21-d laboratory incubations of crushed and uncrushed soils, at 18°C and 28°C. 199 topsoil samples, acidic or calcareous, with SOC ranging from 2 to 121 g kg−1 soil were investigated. The CO2 emissions were slightly more sensible to temperature than to C deprotection: about 0.3 mg C g−1 soil (= 13 mg C g−1 SOC) and 0.2 mg C g−1 (= 12 mg C g−1 SOC) were additionally mineralized, in average, by increasing the temperature or by disrupting the soil structure, respectively. The mean Q10 index ratio of CO2 emitted at 28°C and 18°C was similar for crushed and uncrushed soil samples and equaled 1.6. This was partly explained because Q10 of macro-aggregate-protected C was 1. The results did not support the initial hypothesis of lower temperature dependence of soil CO2 emissions after macroaggregate disruption, although a slight decrease of Q10 was noticeable after crushing for soils with high amounts of macroaggregate-protected C. Pre-evacuated Exetainers are commonly used as measurement vials for the determination of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations in liquid and gaseous samples from aquatic environments. The impact of residual air in these Exetainers on measurement accuracy is assessed. Residual air pressure in commercially available, pre-evacuated Exetainers varied between 0.071 ± 0.008 atm and 0.180 ± 0.031 atm in examined batches. This background contamination can lead to large errors when determining dissolved and gaseous CH4 and N2O concentrations particularly at low concentrations. A method for Exetainer pretreatment is suggested and verified, to reduce the residual CH4 and N2O. Vials are flushed (needle 30 G × 0.5″, 0.3 mm) with nitrogen gas (N2) for 5 min, which reduces the background CH4 and N2O concentrations to 0.092 ± 0.008 ppm and 0.016 ± 0.001 ppm, respectively, approximately 3-4% of their respective concentrations in air. To avoid an alteration of sample concentration by variable residual gas levels left during a pre-evacuation step, liquid and gaseous samples are injected into the N2 filled Exetainers. For gaseous samples where large volumes of gas are available, Exetainers can alternatively be flushed with 100 mL of sampling gas. For gaseous samples, measured CH4 and N2O concentrations of standard gases were statistically identical to their known concentrations. For liquid samples, measured CH4 and N2O concentrations of liquid standard dilution series showed strong linear correlations with theoretically calculated concentrations (slope CH4: 1.04, slope N2O: 1.12).
