Background. This study analyzes the management and outcomes of a series of 10 malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) of the head and neck. Methods. From 1984 to 2004, 10 patients underwent surgical treatment of a MPNST. We retrospectively reviewed presenting symptoms, radiological findings, surgical management, and follow-up status and performed a literature review. Results. Eight tumors were located at the lateral skull base; 2 involved the vagus nerve in isolation. Two lesions were growing within the sinonasal tract. The most common presenting symptom was a rapidly enlarging cervical mass. Seventy percent of the tumors could be resected completely. Long-term follow-up showed a 2-year disease-specific survival rate of 50% and 5-year survival rate of 20%. Negative prognostic indicators were advanced tumor stage, early recurrence, and presumably also the presence of von Recklinghausen's disease. Postoperative adjuvant radiotherapy was found to make no difference in outcome. Conclusions. Although rare, MPNST is one of the most aggressive tumors in the head and neck area. Complete tumor removal is the mainstay of treatment and most important prognostic factor of MPNST. Adjuvant radiotherapy should be used to assist surgical excision in local control. This paper describes a major update to the quasi‐global, higher‐frequency sea‐level dataset known as GESLA (Global Extreme Sea Level Analysis). Versions 1 (released 2009) and 2 (released 2016) of the dataset have been used in many published studies, across a wide range of oceanographic and coastal engineering‐related investigations concerned with evaluating tides, storm surges, extreme sea levels, and other related processes. The third version of the dataset (released 2021), presented here, contains double the number of years of data, and nearly four times the number of records, compared to Version 2. The dataset consists of records obtained from multiple sources around the world. Published estimates of 2050 food demand exhibit an enormous range of values. This paper projects a 50–60 percent increase in total global food demand between 2019 and 2050. Our analysis indicates a substantial slowing of rice demand, a growing share of palm oil in world fats and oils markets, and a continued shift to poultry as the dominant form of meat consumption. In contrast to most existing food models, we integrate fish consumption into the analysis of vegetable and animal protein and highlight the dangers of using commonly cited feed ratios for projecting feed grain demand. Abstract: Potentiating the evolution of immunity is a promising strategy for addressing biodiversity diseases. Assisted selection for infection resistance may enable the recovery and persistence of amphibians threatened by chytridiomycosis, a devastating fungal skin disease threatening hundreds of species globally. However, knowledge of the mechanisms involved in the natural evolution of immunity to chytridiomycosis is limited. Understanding the mechanisms of such resistance may help speed‐assisted selection. Using a transcriptomics approach, we examined gene expression responses of endangered alpine tree frogs (Litoria verreauxii alpina) to subclinical infection, comparing two long‐exposed populations with a naïve population. We performed a blinded, randomized and controlled exposure experiment, collecting skin, liver and spleen tissues at 4, 8 and 14 days postexposure from 51 wild‐caught captively reared infection‐naïve adult frogs for transcriptome assembly and differential gene expression analyses. We analysed our results in conjunction with infection intensity data, and the results of a large clinical survival experiment run concurrently with individuals from the same clutches. Here, we show that frogs from an evolutionarily long‐exposed and phenotypically more resistant population of the highly susceptible alpine tree frog demonstrate a more robust innate and adaptive immune response at the critical early subclinical stage of infection when compared with two more susceptible populations. These results are consistent with the occurrence of evolution of resistance against chytridiomycosis, help to explain underlying resistance mechanisms, and provide genes of potential interest and sequence data for future research.
