Many social insect species build nests, which differ from the surrounding environment and are often occupied by specific organismal communities. These organisms may interact mutualistically or parasitically with the nest‐builders, or simply co‐occur, being able to survive in these microenvironments. In temperate forests, red wood ants (e.g. Formica polyctena) are known to create distinct, highly developed nests, which consist of large, above‐ground mounds, built primarily out of plant matter collected from the forest litter. The microorganismal communities of such mounds remain understudied. As representatives of Mucoromycota fungi commonly engage in the decomposition process of the forest litter, they would be expected to occur in the mounds. However, it is still not known whether the Mucoromycota community of these ants' nests differ from the one of the surrounding forest litter. In order to distinguish mound‐associated taxa, we characterized Mucoromycota communities of Formica polyctena mounds and the surrounding forest litter. We sampled four sites, twice in a season. Sampled material was plated on agar media and emerging Mucoromycota colonies were identified based on their morphology. Fungal identification was further confirmed using DNA barcoding. In order to compare described communities, PERMANOVA test and non‐metric multidimensional scaling ordinations were used. To distinguish taxa associated with the mounds, multilevel pattern analysis was performed. Our results show that the Mucoromycota community of Formica polyctena's mound differs from the community of the surrounding forest litter. While representatives of Entomortierella lignicola and Absidia cylindrospora clade were found to be associated with the mound environment, representatives of Umbelopsis curvata and Podila verticillata‐humilis clade were associated with forest litter, and were rarely present in the mounds. Our findings strongly suggest that the red wood ants' nest is a specific microenvironment in the temperate forest floor, which is a preferred microhabitat for the mound‐associated Mucoromycota, possibly adapted to live in proximity to ants. Anthracyclines are chemotherapeutic drugs used to treat solid and hematologic malignancies. However, life‐threatening cardiotoxicity, with cardiac dilation and heart failure, is a drawback. A combination of in vivo for single cell/nucleus RNA sequencing and in vitro approaches is used to elucidate the underlying mechanism. Genetic depletion and pharmacological blocking peptides on phosphatidylinositol binding clathrin assembly (PICALM) are used to evaluate the role of PICALM in doxorubicin‐induced cardiotoxicity in vivo. Human heart tissue samples are used for verification. Patients with end‐stage heart failure and chemotherapy‐induced cardiotoxicity have thinner cell membranes compared to healthy controls do. Using the doxorubicin‐induced cardiotoxicity mice model, it is possible to replicate the corresponding phenotype in patients. Cellular changes in doxorubicin‐induced cardiotoxicity in mice, especially in cardiomyocytes, are identified using single cell/nucleus RNA sequencing. Picalm expression is upregulated only in cardiomyocytes with doxorubicin‐induced cardiotoxicity. Amyloid β‐peptide production is also increased after doxorubicin treatment, which leads to a greater increase in the membrane permeability of cardiomyocytes. Genetic depletion and pharmacological blocking peptides on Picalm reduce the generation of amyloid β‐peptide. This alleviates the doxorubicin‐induced cardiotoxicity in vitro and in vivo. The purpose of this study was to assess the clinical significance of spatial and temporal analysis of left ventricular (LV) filling-flow propagation using color M-mode Doppler echocardiography before and after regression of LV hypertrophy in patients with hypertension. Seven patients with hypertensive LV hypertrophy were studied. Echocardiographic and Doppler examinations were performed both before and after 6 months administration of alacepril. LV mass index (LVMI), LV flow propagation velocity (FPV), and the maximal early transmitral flow velocity (E) were measured. LVMI, FPV, and FPV/E ratio were compared to before and after administration of alacepril. In addition, the correlation between LVMI and FPV/E ratio was evaluated. Results showed that LVMI was significantly decreased (P < 0.05) and the FPV/E ratio was significantly increased (P < 0.05) after treatment with alacepril. There was no significant change in FPV. In addition, there was a significant negative correlation between LVMI and the FPV/E ratio (r = -0.662, P < 0.001). The present study indicates that the FPV/E ratio could be a useful noninvasive parameter to assess the diastolic dysfunction associated with LV hypertrophy in patients with hypertension.

Terminally differentiated cells are commonly regarded as the most stable cell state in adult organisms, characterized by growth arrest while fulfilling their specialized functions. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved in promoting cell cycle exit will improve the ability to differentiate pluripotent cells into mature tissues for both pharmacological and therapeutic use. Here, it demonstrates that a hyperosmolar environment enforces a protective p53‐independent quiescent state in immature hepatoma cells and in pluripotent stem cell‐derived models of human hepatocytes and endothelial cells. Prolonged culture in hyperosmolar conditions stimulates changes in gene expression promoting functional cell maturation. Interestingly, hyperosmolar conditions do not only trigger growth arrest and cellular maturation but are also necessary to maintain this maturated state, as switching back to plasma osmolarity reverses the changes in expression of maturation and proliferative markers. Transcriptome analysis revealed sequential stages of osmolarity‐regulated growth arrest followed by cell maturation, mediated by activation of NF‐κВ, and repression of WNT signaling, respectively. This study reveals that a modulated increase in osmolarity serves as a biochemical signal to promote long‐term growth arrest and cellular maturation into different lineages, providing a practical method to generate differentiated hiPSCs that resemble their mature counterpart more closely. BACKGROUND: The Asian needle ant, Brachyponera chinensis, is an invasive ant currently spreading in urban and natural habitats throughout the eastern United States. Recent studies have documented the negative impact of B. chinensis on native ecosystems and human health, yet effective control strategies are lacking. Control difficulties are, in part, due to the unique biology of B. chinensis, which is a predatory ant and a termite specialist. Given that subterranean termites are an important nutritional resource for B. chinensis, the current study evaluated the potential of termite cuticular extract to improve the target‐specificity and efficacy of commercial bait used for B. chinensis control. RESULTS: The efficacy of bait augmented with termite cuticular extracts was evaluated in laboratory and field trials. In laboratory assays, B. chinensis colonies were offered granular bait treated with termite cuticular extract. Results demonstrated that the acceptance of commercial bait is significantly increased by the addition of termite cuticular extract or synthetic (Z)‐9‐pentacosene, a major component of termite cuticular extract. Foraging activity of Asian needle ants was significantly greater on baits augmented with termite cuticular extract or (Z)‐9‐pentacosene relative to standard bait. Furthermore, bait augmented with termite cuticular extract worked substantially faster relative to standard bait. To evaluate population effects, field studies were conducted in forested areas invaded by B. chinensis. Bait treated with termite cuticular extract scattered on the forest floor provided rapid control of B. chinensis and ant densities throughout the treated plots declined by 98% within 14 days. CONCLUSION: The incorporation of termite cuticular extracts and individual cuticular hydrocarbons such as (Z)‐9‐pentacosene into traditional baits used for B. chinensis control may offer a novel tool to manage this increasingly problematic invasive ant. © 2023 The Author. Afforestation on degraded lands is an effective measure to control desertification and soil erosion, but these functions are often constrained by soil nitrogen (N) availability. Moreover, soil N availability usually shifts along plantation development, yet we have a limited understanding of factors driving this shift. Here, we examined dynamics of soil N mineralization and nitrification rates along plantation development, and explored mechanisms behind these dynamics from the perspective of N‐cycling microbes. We measured needle litter quality, N‐hydrolyzing enzyme activity, biomass and community composition of soil microbes (phospholipid fatty acid analysis) and ammonia oxidizers (real‐time quantitative PCR and high‐throughput sequencing), and net N mineralization and nitrification rates along a chronosequence of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica stands with six age classes ranging from 15‐ to 61‐year‐old in the Three‐North region of China. Results showed that stand development increased net N mineralization rate by 54%, nitrate‐N concentration by 106%, and nitrate‐N:ammonium‐N ratio from 1.09 to 2.63. Gram‐positive:gram‐negative bacterial ratio and β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase activity initially increased and subsequently decreased along stand development with the highest values in 40‐year‐old stands, while fungal:bacterial ratio showed the opposite pattern with the lowest value in 40‐year‐old stands. These shifts in soil microbial properties were associated with age‐related changes in needle litter C:N ratio and soil pH. Net N mineralization rate was positively related to β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase activities, but not to soil microbial biomass and community composition. Net nitrification rate was negatively correlated with ammonia‐oxidizing archaeal abundances and positively with ammonia‐oxidizing bacterial abundances. Collectively, our results indicate that soil N availability increases and N cycling accelerates with plantation growth, and suggest that microbial N recycling driven by β‐N‐acetylglucosaminidase is tightly related to soil N dynamics along stand development. BACKGROUND: Delottococcus aberiae is an invasive mealybug that produces severe damage in Spanish citrus. This mealybug has established a mutualistic relationship with native Mediterranean ant species that may limit biological control of this pest. Herein, we evaluated the effect of tending ants on the biological control of D. aberiae. To do this, we compared: (i) the density of D. aberiae, (ii) the density of its natural enemies, and (iii) the damage produced by the mealybug in trees with (control) and without ants (ants excluded with sticky barriers) in two citrus orchards across two consecutive years. RESULTS: Lasius grandis was the most abundant ant species in both orchards and represented more than 95% of the ants tending D. aberiae in control trees. Spiders and lacewings were the most abundant predators observed in mealybug colonies, and the exclusion of mutualistic ants increased their abundance. Moreover, in control trees, ant activity throughout the year was negatively correlated with the relative abundance of predators (number of predators per mealybug). No parasitoids were recovered during field experiments. Ant exclusion reduced the density of D. aberiae and the ratio of damaged fruit at harvest across years and orchards. CONCLUSIONS: This work corroborates the previous finding that D. aberiae benefits from its mutualistic relationship with L. grandis, probably because the presence of ants reduced the abundance of generalist predators. This mutualism can be disrupted using physical barriers on on the trunk. Ants are among the most pervasive and impactful invasive species. While some characteristics of invasive ants have been linked to establishment success and competitive dominance, these traits are not universal to all successful invaders and much crucial information on the biology of both well‐known and lesser‐known invasive ants remains lacking. In this study, we address this knowledge gap using a molecular approach to define the ongoing invasion by the white‐footed ant, Technomyrmex brunneus, in eastern Asia. This species is native to eastern and south‐eastern Asia but has become a problematic invader in Japan where significant expansions in range have been documented in recent decades. Its status in eastern Asia is complicated by taxonomic confusion and misidentifications, creating significant hurdles to threat assessment, management, and the establishment of fundamental information such as the delineation of the native and invasive range. We combine mitochondrial DNA sequences with genome‐wide single‐nucleotide polymorphisms to elucidate relationships between populations from Vietnam to Japan. Our data reveal very limited genetic differentiation among populations despite their broad geographic spread. This can most parsimoniously be explained as a recent and ongoing invasion, likely facilitated by human dispersal. The one exception to this pattern was strong genetic distinction between two regions in China indicated by mitochondrial DNA. We speculate that this may indicate a boundary between a native population and more recent wave of invasion. Finally, we present the results of climate niche modeling indicating that extensive additional areas remain suitable for this species, suggesting this invasion is far from complete. Many studies have been conducted to elucidate unknown input/output systems based on measured data obtained from experiments and observations. Specifically, neural networks, which have been significantly developed in recent years, can be used for equation discovery. However, the identified networks are considerably large and difficult to understand. Many studies have been conducted on mathematical expressions that are easy to understand; however, there is a paucity of studies on methods to determine a simple equation by eliminating unnecessary terms. In this study, we propose a novel method for identifying unknown equations using mode extraction via singular value decomposition. In this method, the "process of improving the precision of an equation" and the "process of deleting unnecessary terms" are alternately iterated based on singular value decomposition. We confirm the applicability of the proposed method via a sample problem on cantilever deflection. Therefore, the proposed method can accurately determine an equation of an input/output system composed of only essential terms (i.e., excluding unnecessary terms) from training data. Herbivore outbreaks cause serious damage to forest trees. In recent decades, outbreaks of the gall midge Schizomyia castanopsisae (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) inducing inflorescence galls on Castanopsis sieboldii (Fagaceae) occurred in the Izu Islands, Tokyo, Japan. We investigated the gall density on the islands and estimated the larval population on Miyakejima Island. We also surveyed seasonal changes in larval age structure, presence of natural enemies, larval cold tolerance, and thermal effects on the adult emergence. In addition, we conducted molecular phylogenetic analyses of S. castanopsisae populations among different localities. The gall density was particularly high in southern parts (from Miyakejima to Aogashima) of the Izu Islands. The gall midge seemed to have been expanding its range toward northern parts in recent years. On Miyakejima, the larval population was estimated to be approximately 158 and 36 bn in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Parasitoids were not found in the dissection of galls. A cold temperature treatment did not affect the percentage of adult emergence. Developmental zero and thermal constant during the period from larval departure to adult emergence were estimated to be 4.7°C and 588.2°C‐days in males and 7.4°C and 476.2°C‐days in females, and the adults were predicted to emerge in April. Populations in Kyushu were genetically distinct from those in Okinawajima and the Izu Islands, but a common haplotype was found between the latter two localities. These imply that S. castanopsisae on the Izu Islands may be a recent invasion, and the absence of natural enemies causes its outbreaks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding the dynamics and availability of soil nitrogen (N) affected by the conversion of cropping patterns is critical for environmental sustainability, especially in tropical soils with low fertility and high N loss. In this study, the 15N tracing technology combined with the 15N tracer model was used to explore the dynamic change of soil N transformation in long‐estabished areca nut (Areca catechu) plantations. Areca nut plantations with different ages (2, 5, 10, 14, and 17 years) and paddy fields in the tropical region of China were studied. The results demonstrated that the gross N mineralization rate (M) of areca nut plantation soil was much lower than that of paddy soil. The NH4+ immobilization (INH4) rate was also significantly reduced in areca nut plantations. Besides, the ONH4 (autotrophic nitrification) in long‐term areca nut planted soil decreased significantly with decreasing ammonia‐oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia‐oxidizing bacteria (AOB) abundance. Inorganic N supply (INS) capacity of areca nut planted soil was much lower than the paddy soil, indicating declined N supply in long‐term areca nut plantations soil. The decline in soil gross N transformations rate and INS capacity of areca nut plantations soil was significantly correlated to reduced levels of TN and soil pH. Thus, agricultural practices that increase the soil pH (e.g., biochar or lime application) and the soil organic matter content (e.g., organic fertilizers) could improve soil INS capacity. The diversification of phenotypes and species has been a major concern in evolutionary biology. Both resource competition and predator–prey interactions have been suggested as mechanisms that drive phenotypic divergence and speciation, but the latter has attracted much less attention than the former. The Karaftohelix land snails in Northeast Asia provide an excellent model to investigate the effects of competition and predation on the divergence process. This is because (1) all species—especially Karaftohelix editha and Karaftohelix gainesi in northern Japan—are closely related and sometimes indistinguishable by genital morphologies and neutral nuclear and mitochondrial DNA markers, despite the distinct phenotypes among species; (2) two different anti‐predatory strategies (i.e., passive and active defenses) are observed for each species in this group; and (3) multiple species have generally overlapping distributions and were often observed at exactly the same time and place. In this study, we conducted quantitative quadrat surveys and carbon/nitrogen stable isotope analyses to compare the microhabitat and trophic niches among Karaftohelix land snails and estimated the cause of adaptive radiation in this taxon. All the results indicated that the differences in microhabitats and trophic niches among Karaftohelix land snails—especially between the most closely related sister species, K. editha and K. gainesi in northern Japan—were too small to promote the adaptive radiation in this group. Therefore, it is difficult to explain the extreme divergence of phenotypes and species among Karaftohelix land snails in Northeast Asia based on environmental adaptation through resource competition and/or reproductive interference. BACKGROUND: Ants are one of the most serious household pests. White‐footed ants in the genus Technomyrmex (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) are invasive species of increasing global importance as evidenced by recent range expansion, nuisance pest status in residential areas and control difficulties driven mainly by lack of effective bait products. The goal for the current study was to develop an effective hydrogel bait and community‐wide management program for controlling the invasive T. brunneus in a residential area of Hachijo Island, Japan. RESULTS: In laboratory insecticide screening, hydrogel baits containing thiamethoxam achieved higher T. brunneus mortality than those containing dinotefuran, imidacloprid, boric acid or fipronil at the concentrations tested. Hydrogel baits containing 0.01% and 0.001% thiamethoxam resulted in ≥90% mortality within seven days. However, the horizontal transfer effect was not strong with either concentration. Field experiments confirmed that hydrogel baits containing 10% and 30% sugar are highly attractive to T. brunneus. The community‐wide treatment utilizing hydrogel bait containing 0.001% thiamethoxam and 30% sugar significantly suppressed T. brunneus. Town residents were given the opportunity to participate in the program by applying hydrogel baits around their homes, and a follow‐up survey revealed that the residents regarded hydrogel baits as easy to apply and highly attractive and effective against T. brunneus. CONCLUSION: The hydrogel bait and management program developed in this study can be used to suppress T. brunneus. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that a large network of highly motivated and properly trained members of the public can be highly effective in managing invasive ant populations. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry. Calcareous foraminifer shells (tests) represent one of the most important archives for paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstruction. To develop a mechanistic understanding of the relationship between environmental parameters and proxy signals, knowledge of the fundamental processes operating during foraminiferal biomineralization is essential. Here, we apply microscopic and diffraction‐based methods to address the crystallographic and hierarchical structure of the test wall of different hyaline foraminifer species. Our results show that the tests are constructed from micrometer‐scale oriented mesocrystals built of nanometer‐scale entities. Based on these observations, we propose a mechanistic extension to the biomineralization model for hyaline foraminifers, centered on the formation and assembly of units of metastable carbonate phases to the final mesocrystal via a non‐classical particle attachment process, possibly facilitated by organic matter. This implies the presence of metastable precursors such as vaterite or amorphous calcium carbonate, along with phase transitions to calcite, which is relevant for the mechanistic understanding of proxy incorporation in the hyaline foraminifers. During their life, the chemical composition of their shells records environmental conditions. By analyzing fossil shells, past conditions can be reconstructed to understand ancient oceans and climate change. To do that correctly, we need to know exactly how foraminifers form their shell. We find that foraminifers build micrometer‐sized mesocrystals which are made of smaller building blocks. This means that the smallest building blocks form first and assemble to form a larger grain, which is oriented in a specific direction. To align all the building blocks, it is possible that they are first unstable and undergo transformation on assembly, during which their composition may change. By understanding and quantifying this process, the composition of the final fossil shell may be understood, ultimately leading to more reliable reconstructions of past environmental change. According to the World Health Organization, between 2000 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 will double, from 11% to 22%. In absolute numbers, this age group will increase from 605 million to 2 billion in the course of half a century. It is a reality that most of them prefer to live alone, so it is necessary to look for mechanisms and tools that will help them to improve their autonomy. Although in recent years, we have been living in a veritable explosion of domotic systems that facilitate people's daily lives, it is also true that there are not many tools specifically aimed at this sector of the population. The aim of this paper is to present a potential solution to the monitoring of activity of daily living in the least intrusive way for people. In this case, anomalous patterns of daily activities will be detected by analysing the daily consumption of household appliances. People who live alone usually have a pattern of daily behaviour in the use of household appliances (coffee machine, microwave, television, etc.). A neuronal model is proposed for the detection of abnormal behaviour based on an autoencoder architecture. This solution will be compared with a variational autoencoder to analyse the improvements that can be obtained. The well‐known dataset called UK‐DALE will be used to validate the proposal. Fine root decomposition, mortality, and production are fundamental components of belowground carbon dynamics in mangrove ecosystems. Mangroves are highly productive ecosystems with huge carbon stocks; however, information on the dynamics of submerged fine roots in mangrove soils is limited. To estimate fine root production in several sites of mangrove communities on Pohnpei Island, Micronesia, we estimated continuous inflows using a simple mass balance model to combine ingrowth core and litterbag experimental results. According to our findings, previously reported mangrove fine root production values were severely underestimated because the fine root decomposition process was disregarded during the experimental period. We estimated that annual fine root production up to 0.3 m in depth ranged from 13.8 (Bruguiera gymnorrhiza in a landward plot) to 56.3 Mg ha−1 year−1 (B. gymnorrhiza in a seaward plot). However, comparing the fine root production with respect to the unit of stem cross‐section area increase in the sample tree, the fine root production of Rhizophora spp. was greater than that of other species. The annual fine root mortality and decomposition to annual fine root production was 70%–105% and 11%–52% of annual production, respectively. The annual fine root production estimated here was much higher than that previously reported. These findings begin to quantify the contribution and importance of highly productive mangrove fine roots for carbon sequestration in blue carbon ecosystems. Nanozymes hold great potential in nanomedicine, yet biotoxicity limits their clinical translation because of their uncontrolled catalytic activity, artificial inorganic components, and harsh synthesis conditions. Herein, a peroxidase‐like bionanozyme with ultrahigh and photocontrolled catalytic activity through the self‐assembly of biomolecules, hemin, and in situ polymerization of pyrrole in an aqueous solution is reported. Such bionanozymes leverage the specific cues of the tumor microenvironment and precise light‐induced photothermal heating for spatiotemporally controlled reactive oxygen species generation in tumors. The tunable catalytic activity and excellent biocompatibility of the bionanozyme result in high cancer cell apoptosis and tumor growth inhibition in murine models with negligible biotoxicity. This work highlights the potential of biomolecule‐based nanozymes for cancer‐specific therapy. This article is a highlight of the paper by Choe et al. in this issue of Photochemistry and Photobiology. In that review paper, the disinfection and biomodulation outcomes promoted by antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) on peri‐implantitis infection were stated and discussed. The killing of the oral pathogens by aPDT is based on the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Besides that, biomodulation can also be provided by aPDT and improve the healing and modulate the inflammatory process. Although aPDT has shown positive effects on the treatment of peri‐implantitis disease mainly as a complimentary technique, the authors suggested that more and standardize clinical studies are needed to support the clinical application of aPDT for that purpose. Also, the standardization of parameters related to the light source and photosensitizers is required. In addition, nano‐based materials may improve aPDT performance against oral biofilms and could increase the hopes of overcoming dental implant failures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heterogeneity is a hallmark of many complex diseases. There are multiple ways of defining heterogeneity, among which the heterogeneity in genetic regulations, for example, gene expressions (GEs) by copy number variations (CNVs), and methylation, has been suggested but little investigated. Heterogeneity in genetic regulations can be linked with disease severity, progression, and other traits and is biologically important. However, the analysis can be very challenging with the high dimensionality of both sides of regulation as well as sparse and weak signals. In this article, we consider the scenario where subjects form unknown subgroups, and each subgroup has unique genetic regulation relationships. Further, such heterogeneity is "guided" by a known biomarker. We develop a multivariate sparse fusion (MSF) approach, which innovatively applies the penalized fusion technique to simultaneously determine the number and structure of subgroups and regulation relationships within each subgroup. Ongoing climate change is increasing rainfall variability in many parts of the world; in particular, the heaviest rainfall events are becoming heavier. In terrestrial ecosystems, nitrogen deposition is increasing as a result of emissions from fossil fuel burning and volatilization of nitrogen‐based fertilizers. These changes in the timing and rate of resource inputs can impact plant communities by altering competitive dynamics, succession, and community composition. In many systems, these are occurring alongside successional dynamics, making it difficult to tease apart mechanisms. Here, we resampled a nitrogen by rainfall variability manipulation experiment in a restored tallgrass prairie to examine the relative role of background community dynamics and treatment effects on plant diversity. During the treatment period, nitrogen addition and increased rainfall variability reduced diversity. Here, four and five years after the treatments were halted, we found similarly low levels of diversity across all treatments—an effect driven by dominance of a tall, fast‐growing, clonal forb, Solidago canadensis. The convergence of plots toward a low diversity state suggests that all experimental communities were gradually becoming dominated by S. canadensis, including in the absence of rainfall or nitrogen treatments. In contrast to short‐term findings from the same experiment, we conclude that our treatments accelerated succession toward a tall, clonal forb‐dominated community along an existing sere, but did not fundamentally alter longer‐term community composition—a result that was only apparent several years after the conclusion of the experiment. Forest succession is a key driver of plant communities and understanding succession is central to forest restoration. Currently, the information on the response of the microbial community to the forest succession process, however, is limited. In the present study, we investigated the dynamics of the soil bacterial community in three forest types undergoing succession caused by pine wilt disease, representing the initial pine forest, gradual mixed pine and broadleaved forest, and eventual broadleaved forest, using Illumina MiSeq coupled with Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) analysis.The results showed that the soil pH, contents of soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil total nitrogen (TN) increased after the occurrence of initial succession and differed among the forest sites. The mixed pine forest had significantly higher bacteria biomass (p < 0.05), whereas, the total microbial biomass did not differ during the succession. The bacterial community diversity and richness increased significantly following the succession process (p < 0.05). Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria and Bacteroidetes were the dominant phyla across the succession, in which the abundance of Bacteroidetes significantly increased (p < 0.05), whereas, Planctomycetes, WPS‐2 and Burkholder decreased in abundance after succession occurred (p < 0.05).The three forests formed distinct bacterial community structures during the succession (p < 0.05), whereas, only two functional structures were clustered, in which the mixed and pure broadleaved forest did not differ. The dominant functional groups involved in the C cycle in the initial pure pine forest were replaced gradually by the groups involved in N and S cycles following the subsequent succession. The soil pH, soil TN and SOC were the most important factors affecting the bacterial community and functional structures during the succession.These results indicate that the bacterial community and function shift drastically in the early stages of succession, which reflects the changes in ecological environment caused by succession. The findings provide useful information to better understand the response of microbes to natural forest disturbance and highlight the importance of microbes during forest succession. A novel inducible artificial metalloenzyme obtained by covalent attachment of a manganese(III)‐tetraphenylporphyrin (MnTPP) to the artificial bidomain repeat protein, (A3A3′)Y26C, is reported. The protein is part of the αRep family. The biohybrid was fully characterized by MALDI‐ToF mass spectrometry, circular dichroism and UV/Vis spectroscopies. The peroxidase and monooxygenase activities were evaluated on the original and modified scaffolds including those that have a) an additional imidazole, b) a specific αRep bA3‐2 that is known to induce the opening of the (A3A3′) interdomain region and c) a derivative of the αRep bA3‐2 inducer extended with a His6‐Tag (His6‐bA3‐2). Catalytic profiles are highly dependent on the presence of co‐catalysts with the best activity obtained with His6‐bA3‐2. The entire mechanism was rationalized by an integrative molecular modeling study that includes protein–ligand docking and large‐scale molecular dynamics. This constitutes the first example of an entirely artificial metalloenzyme with inducible peroxidase and monooxygenase activities, reminiscent of allosteric regulation of natural enzymatic pathways. Summary: The application of anomaly detection to data monitoring is a fundamental requirement of the public service systems of a smart city. Many detection methods have been proposed for identifying anomalous situations, including methods based on periodicity or biseries correlations. However, the detection results of these methods are not ideal. Thus, we present a new anomaly detection algorithm for time series based on the relative outlier distance (ROD) and biseries correlations. The proposed algorithm detects outliers based on the ROD and identifies abnormal points and change points based on biseries correlations. Experimental results show that our method achieves better recall and F1‐measure scores than various time series–based techniques while maintaining a high level of precision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Plants generally use soil inorganic nitrogen, ammonium (NH4+–N), and nitrate (NO3−–N) as sources of nitrogen, an essential nutrient. The assimilation processes after uptake differ considerably from ammonium to nitrate. Nitrate must be reduced to ammonium in plant tissue before it is synthesized to amino acids, while ammonium is directly and immediately synthesized to amino acids after its uptake. Nitrate reductase is an enzyme that catalyzes the first and rate‐limiting step of nitrate assimilation, reducing nitrate to nitrite. It is a substrate‐inducible enzyme, and the capacity to induce nitrate reductase varies greatly among plant species. In vivo nitrate reductase activity (NRA) is generally measured as a nitrite production rate during incubation using fine cut pieces of plant tissue, and it is applicable as an indicator on plant nitrate use. Here we present in vivo NRA of leaves from a total of 108 species including arboreal trees, small trees, shrubs, herbs, a vine and a moss. For 75 of the species, NRA in fine roots was also determined. At least 20 species in sampled plants were imported and planted for scientific or industrial purposes, but most sampled species were native to Japan. Several inventory studies of plant NRA have been conducted, mainly in Europe, and they provided information on the species‐specific capacity of nitrate use by plants in Europe. However, to our best knowledge, there has been hitherto no published inventory of the NRA of plants in Japan where many endemic species are distributed. Our dataset contains plant NRA with species, family name, life form, leaf lifespan (evergreen or deciduous), growth stage, the season of sample collection, growth conditions (natural or cultivated) and other treatments/conditions when applicable. The data provided by this study may contribute to future works that require information regarding the plant species characteristics for nitrate use capacity or nitrate preference. Calcium (Ca) is an essential element for many animal species, especially for land snails with shell structures. The availability of Ca imposes constraints on their growth and survival as well as their density and distribution. However, little is known about how they obtain Ca in a natural environment. For example, many species of land snails feed on lichens, but lichens have Ca in the form of calcium oxalate, making it difficult for animals to utilize. Therefore, we predicted that lichens or a representative food source of land snails is not necessarily a major source of Ca, and there may be another source for shell development. The strontium isotope ratio (87Sr/86Sr) is a useful index for estimating the source of Ca. With this technique, we estimated Ca sources of an arboreal land snail, Euhadra brandtii sapporo, and tested the hypothesis described above. The data for the 87Sr/86Sr ratio show that E. brandtii sapporo did not obtain Ca from lichens and moss in tree canopies, although the data for the δ15N and δ13C show that the species' main food source may be lichens and moss. We also conducted the isotope analysis of Ezohelix gainesi as a reference, which inhabits the forest floor. The data of δ15N and δ13C show E. gainesi may feed mainly on litter. The 87Sr/86Sr ratio was markedly different from that of arboreal E. brandtii sapporo, and this ground‐dwelling snail likely obtains Ca from ground litter or soil. Our results indicate that Ca sources are different between arboreal and ground‐dwelling land snails, and the former obtains Ca through something other than its major food sources, perhaps from stemflow and precipitation. Members of the GATA family of transcription factors play key roles in the differentiation of specific cell lineages by regulating the expression of target genes. Three GATA factors play distinct roles in hematopoietic differentiation. In order to better understand how these GATA factors function to regulate genes throughout the genome, we are studying the epigenomic and transcriptional landscapes of hematopoietic cells in a model‐driven, integrative fashion. We have formed the collaborative multi‐lab VISION project to conduct ValIdated Systematic IntegratiON of epigenomic data in mouse and human hematopoiesis. The epigenomic data included nuclease accessibility in chromatin, CTCF occupancy, and histone H3 modifications for 20 cell types covering hematopoietic stem cells, multilineage progenitor cells, and mature cells across the blood cell lineages of mouse. The analysis used the Integrative and Discriminative Epigenome Annotation System (IDEAS), which learns all common combinations of features (epigenetic states) simultaneously in two dimensions—along chromosomes and across cell types. The result is a segmentation that effectively paints the regulatory landscape in readily interpretable views, revealing constitutively active or silent loci as well as the loci specifically induced or repressed in each stage and lineage. Nuclease accessible DNA segments in active chromatin states were designated candidate cis‐regulatory elements in each cell type, providing one of the most comprehensive registries of candidate hematopoietic regulatory elements to date. Abstract: Partial reduction of bulk CuAlO2 results in hierarchical structures wherein there are copper‐alumina regions with widely differing morphologies and scale. At the finest level, the distribution of the 2 phases is at the nanoscale. By means of atomic resolution STEM and electron diffraction, the nanocomposite regions were shown to consist of a dense array of metallic copper platelets dispersed in a matrix of θ‐Al2O3. The copper nanoplatelets were single crystal, and they all exhibited the same orientation relationship with the matrix, namely [110]Cu//[010]θ‐Al2O3, (111)Cu//( 4 0 2 ¯)θ‐Al2O3. It was shown that the 2‐phase regions where the copper exhibited a significantly coarser, globular morphology, resulted from discontinuous coarsening. Interestingly, a change in the matrix phase from θ‐ to δ‐alumina was also observed as a result of the coarsening reaction. It is believed that in the nanocomposite regions, the θ‐alumina phase was stabilized by the lower interfacial energy between the copper (110) platelets and the matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to evaluate the use of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) as an adjunct for minimally invasive treatment (partial removal of carious tissue—PRCT) of deciduous carious tissue evaluating its efficacy in reducing microorganisms. For that, a clinical study was design including children with deciduous molars with active deep caries lesions (DCL). PRCT was performed and remaining dentin was treated with 100 μg mL−1 methylene blue solution (5 min) and than irradiated with a low power laser emitting red light (InGaAIP—indium gallium aluminum phosphide; λ = 660 nm; 100 mW; 300 J cm−2; 90 s; 9 J). The colony forming units (CFU) count after PRCT and after PRCT + aPDT/mg of dentin were compared for total microorganisms, including Candida spp., the mutans streptococci group, Streptococcus spp. and Lactobacillus spp. The dentin was classified (color, consistency and humidity). The microbial reduction varied from 69.88% to 86.29% and was significantly observed for total microorganisms, mutans streptococci, Streptococcus spp. and Lactobacillus spp (P < 0.001). The dentin type did not influence reduction of microorganisms (P > 0.05). The aPDT presents a promising future for clinical use as an adjunct for the reduction of microorganisms in PRCT of DCL in all kinds of dentin. Dental caries is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is effective against microorganisms associated with dental caries. The treatment of dental caries using aPDT associated to a partial removal of carious tissue (PRCT) has a promising future in dentistry for the treatment of deep caries. This technique is effective in reducing the microorganisms in the deep dentin and contributing to the preservation of passive dental tissue of remineralization following the concepts of minimum intervention. Abstract: Carbon is one of the most abundant elements in the biosphere, and a key element for understanding how consumer and resource relationships affect ecosystem functioning. To trace carbon sources, ecologists predominantly rely on stable carbon ratios but variable 13C baselines and diet‐to‐consumer offsets can lead to ambiguous results. To improve source specificity, ecologists are increasingly turning to radiocarbon (14C). Radiocarbon has a much greater dynamic range and specificity than its stable isotope counterpart because its residence time and carbon sources differ widely among the earth's carbon reservoirs. These source‐specific properties make 14C ideally suited for assessing resource use by animals. In ecological research, 14C has been applied successfully (1) to assess allochthonous and autochthonous contributions to food webs, (2) to distinguish between contributions of recent and old resources to aquatic consumers, and (3) to characterize resource use among terrestrial consumers. While these applications show that 14C is a powerful and complementary tool to stable isotopes, great care should be taken in characterizing relevant 14C baselines in the animals’ environments. Such endeavours have traditionally been expensive owing to the high analytical costs of 14C; however, recent methodological advances are gradually making 14C more affordable and accessible for the average user. Advances in another field, Bayesian mixing modelling make it possible to increase the precision of model estimates by integrating multiple sources of information from 14C and stable isotopes to field observations. Given the recent analytical advances, it is now becoming feasible for many ecologists to embrace 14C as an additional source tracer. We suggest that such efforts will be particularly rewarding when combined with compound‐specific stable isotope analyses because the information that can be drawn from both approaches are highly complementary. Moreover, the possibility of determining 14C of individual compounds can solve long‐standing questions with regard to the origins and fate of particular dietary components. The browsing habits of sika deer ( Cervus nippon) in Japan have caused serious ecological problems. Appropriate management of sika deer populations requires understanding the different genetic structures of local populations. In the present study, we used 10 microsatellite polymorphisms to explore the genetic structures of sika deer populations (162 individuals) living in the Kanto region. The expected heterozygosity of the Tanzawa mountain range population (Group I) was lower than that of the populations in the Kanto mountain areas (Group II). Our results suggest that moderate gene flow has occurred between the sika deer populations in the Kanto mountain areas (Group II), but not to or from the Tanzawa mountain range population (Group I). Also, genetic structure analysis showed that the Tanzawa population was separated from the other populations. This is probably attributable to a genetic bottleneck that developed in the Tanzawa sika deer population in the 1950s. However, we found that the Tanzawa population has since recovered from the bottleneck situation and now exhibits good genetic diversity. Our results show that it is essential to periodically evaluate the genetic structures of deer populations to develop conservation strategies appropriate to the specific structures of individual populations at any given time. Among the factors determining litter decomposition rates, the role of soil fauna as decomposers still remains unclear, especially for how they are involved in decomposing below-ground root litter compared to their relatively-known contributions to decomposing above-ground leaf litter. We conducted a litterbag experiment using two sizes of meshes and pursued the leaf and root decomposition of six major tree species in a Japanese temperate forest over 411-days to test the interactive effects of soil mesofauna and litter quality addressed based on two features (litter types and species) on the process. Moreover, given a possible correlation between litter traits of the leaves and roots, we examined whether soil mesofauna alters the relationship between leaf and root decomposition across species. We found that the effects of plant species identity was stronger than that of soil mesofauna for determining the litter mass loss rate and the microbial respiration rate in both above-ground and below-ground decomposition. In addition, we found a significant positive correlation between leaf and root litter decomposition processes, regardless of the involvement soil mesofauna. On the other hand, the presence of soil mesofauna increased microbial respiration rates in the early stage of leaf decomposition; however, soil mesofauna did not affect root microbial respiration rates during the experiment. Such differential involvement of mesofauna in the leaf and root litter decomposition may drive the general patterns of faster and slower decomposition of plant leaves and roots in the soil, respectively. Long-term monitoring of ecosystem succession provides baseline data for conservation and management, as well as for understanding the dynamics of underlying biogeochemical processes. We examined the effects of deforestation and subsequent afforestation of a riparian forest of Japanese cedar ( Cryptomeria japonica) on stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) and natural abundances of radiocarbon (Δ14C) in stream biota in the Mt. Gomadan Experimental Forest and the Wakayama Forest Research Station, Kyoto University, central Japan. Macroinvertebrates, periphytic algae attached to rock surfaces (periphyton), and leaf litter of terrestrial plants were collected from six headwater streams with similar climate, topography, and bedrock geology, except for the stand ages of riparian forests (from 3 to 49 yr old in five stands and >90 yr old in one reference stand). Light intensity and δ13C values of both periphyton and macroinvertebrates decreased synchronously with forest age in winter. A Bayesian mixing model indicates that periphyton contributions to the stream food webs are maximized in 23-yr-old forests. Except for grazers, most macroinvertebrates showed Δ14C values similar to those of terrestrial leaf litter, reflecting the influence of modern atmospheric CO2 Δ14C values. On the other hand, the Δ14C values of both periphyton and grazers (i.e., aquatic primary consumers) were significantly lower than that of modern atmospheric CO2, and were lowest in 23-yr -old forest stands. Previous studies show that root biomass of C. japonica peaks at 15-30 yr after planting. These evidences suggest that soil CO2 released by root respiration and dispersed by groundwater weathers carbonate substrata, and that dissolved inorganic carbon ( DIC) with low Δ14C is incorporated into stream periphyton and some macroinvertebrates. The ecological response in the studied streams to clear-cutting and replanting of Japanese cedar is much slower (~20 yr) than the chemical response (<5 yr). More than 50 yr is required for the food web structure to completely recover from clear-cutting. The ecological delay is attributed to several biogeochemical factors, the understanding of which is critical to integrated management of forest-stream continuum and the prediction of ecosystem resilience in response to environmental change. Increasing rates of atmospheric deposition of nitrogen (N) present a novel threat to the biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Many forests are particularly susceptible to excess N given their proximity to sources of anthropogenic N emissions. This study summarizes results of a 25-yr treatment of an entire central Appalachian hardwood forest watershed via aerial applications of N with a focus on effects of added N on the cover, species richness, and composition of the herbaceous layer. Research was carried out on two watersheds of the Fernow Experimental Forest ( FEF), West Virginia. The long-term reference watershed at FEF ( WS4) was used as a reference; WS3 was experimentally treated, receiving three aerial applications of N per year as ( NH4)2 SO4 totaling 35 kg N ha−1 yr−1, beginning in 1989. Cover of the herbaceous layer (vascular plants ≤1 m in height) was estimated visually in five circular 1-m2 subplots within each of seven circular 400-m2 sample plots spanning all aspects and elevations of each watershed. Sampling was carried out in early July of each of the following years: 1991, 1992, 1994, 2003, and 2009-2014, yielding 10 yr of data collected over a 23-yr period. It was anticipated that the N treatment on WS3 would decrease species richness and alter herb layer composition by enhancing cover of a few nitrophilic species at the expense of numerous N-efficient species. Following a period of minimal response from 1991 to 1994, cover of the herb layer increased substantially on N-treated WS3, and remained high thereafter. There was also a coincidental decrease in herb layer diversity during this period, along with a sharp divergence in community composition between WS4 and WS3. Most changes appear to have arisen from unprecedented, N-mediated increases of Rubus spp., which are normally associated with the high-light environment of openings, rather than beneath intact forest canopies. These findings support the prediction that N-mediated changes in the herbaceous layer of impacted forests are driven primarily by increases in nitrophilic species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Located at the southern edge of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, the Central Myanmar Basin ( CMB) is divided into several Tertiary sub-basins that have been almost continuously filled since the Indo-Asia collision. They are currently drained by the Irrawaddy River, which flows down the eastern Tibetan Plateau and the Sino-Burman Ranges. Tracing sediment provenance from the CMB is thus critical for reconstructing the past denudation of the Himalayan-Tibetan orogen; it is especially relevant since a popular drainage scenario involves the capture of the Tsangpo drainage system in Tibet by a precursor to the Irrawaddy River. Here, we document the provenance of sediment samples from the Minbu Sub-Basin at the southern edge of the CMB, which is traversed by the modern stream of the Irrawaddy River. Samples ranging in age from middle Eocene to Pleistocene were investigated using Nd isotopes, trace element geochemistry and sandstone modal compositions. Our data provide no evidence of a dramatic provenance shift; however, sandstone petrography, trace element ratios and isotopic values display long-term trends indicating a gradual decrease of the volcanic input and its replacement by a dominant supply from the Burmese basement. These trends are interpreted to reflect the progressive denudation of the Andean-type volcanic arc that extended onto the Burmese margin, along the flank of the modern Sino-Burman Ranges, where most of the post-collisional deformation of central Myanmar is located. Though our results do not exclude an ephemeral or diluted contribution from a past Tsangpo-Irrawaddy connection, sedimentation rates suggest that this hypothesis is unlikely before the development of a stable Tsangpo-Brahmaputra River in the Miocene. These results thus suggest that the central Myanmar drainage basin has remained restricted to the Sino-Burman Ranges since the beginning of the India-Asia collision. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Gonadotropins play an important role in gametogenesis and reproduction in vertebrates. Their localization in the pituitary during gonadal sex differentiation has been studied mainly in southern ( Oryzias latipes) strains of medaka fish, with that in northern medaka ( O. sakaizumii) remaining poorly understood. Hence, in this study, we characterized gonadal differentiation and gonadotrophic cells during sex differentiation in two northern strains (HNI and Kaga) and two southern strains (Hd-rR and d-rR/Tokyo). All strains exhibited similar sex differentiation at hatching, such as (1) sex difference in germ cell number (XX > XY), and (2) the transition of XX germ cells into meiosis, and (3) presence of glycoprotein-α (Gpa)- positive cells. However, follicle-stimulating hormone-β (Fshb)-positive cells were first detected in the pituitary 1 day post-hatching in HNI. Exposure to high-temperature conditions and to cortisol in a dose dependent manner resulted in the localization of Fshb cells in the pituitary at hatching. This study demonstrates differences in gonadotropin subunit expression between northern and southern strains of medaka, and suggests that Fsh is not involved in early gonadal sex differentiation, such as the sex difference in germ cell number, and that high-temperature induce Fshb expression via cortisol production in medaka. Insects are the most diverse organisms and often the most abundant animals in some ecosystems. Despite the importance of their functional roles and of the knowledge for conservation, the trophic ecology of many insect species is not fully understood. In this review, I present how stable carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotopes have been used to reveal the trophic ecology of insects over the last 30 years. The isotopic studies on insects have used differences in C isotope ratios between C3 and C4 plants, along vertical profiles of temperate and tropical forest stands, and between terrestrial and aquatic resources. These differences enable exploration of the relative importance of the food resources, as well as movement and dispersal of insects across habitats. The 13C-enrichment (approximately 3‰) caused by saprotrophic fungi can allow the estimation of the importance of fungi in insect diets. Stable N isotopes have revealed food resource partitioning across diverse insect species above and belowground. Detritivorous insects often show a large trophic enrichment in 13C (up to 3‰) and 15N (up to 10‰) relative to the food substrates, soil organic matter. These values are greater than those commonly used for estimation of trophic level. This enrichment likely reflects the prevalence of soil microbial processes, such as fungal development and humification, influencing the isotopic signatures of diets in detritivores. Isotope analysis can become an essential tool in the exploration of insect trophic ecology in terms of biogeochemical C and N cycles, including trophic interactions, plant physiological and soil microbial processes. Anomaly detection is an important problem with multiple applications, and thus has been studied for decades in various research domains. In the past decade there has been a growing interest in anomaly detection in data represented as networks, or graphs, largely because of their robust expressiveness and their natural ability to represent complex relationships. Originally, techniques focused on anomaly detection in static graphs, which do not change and are capable of representing only a single snapshot of data. As real-world networks are constantly changing, there has been a shift in focus to dynamic graphs, which evolve over time. In this survey, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of anomaly detection in dynamic networks, concentrating on the state-of-the-art methods. We first describe four types of anomalies that arise in dynamic networks, providing an intuitive explanation, applications, and a concrete example for each. Having established an idea for what constitutes an anomaly, a general two-stage approach to anomaly detection in dynamic networks that is common among the methods is presented. We then construct a two-tiered taxonomy, first partitioning the methods based on the intuition behind their approach, and subsequently subdividing them based on the types of anomalies they detect. Within each of the tier one categories-community, compression, decomposition, distance, and probabilistic model based-we highlight the major similarities and differences, showing the wealth of techniques derived from similar conceptual approaches. Cell-cell contact-mediated Notch signaling is essential for mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) chondrogenesis during development. However, subsequent deactivation of Notch signaling is also required to allow for stem cell chondrogenic progression. Recent literature has shown that Notch signaling can also influence Wnt/β-catenin signaling, critical for MSC differentiation, through perturbations in cell-cell contacts. Traditionally, abundant cell-cell contacts, consistent with development, are emulated in vitro using pellet cultures for chondrogenesis. However, cells are often encapsulated within biomaterials-based scaffolds, such as hydrogels, to improve therapeutic cell localization in vivo. To explore the role of Notch and Wnt/β-catenin signaling in the context of hydrogel-encapsulated MSC chondrogenesis, we compared signaling and differentiation capacity of MSCs in both hydrogels and traditional pellet cultures. We demonstrate that encapsulation within poly(ethylene glycol) hydrogels reduces cell-cell contacts, and both Notch (7.5-fold) and Wnt/β-catenin (84.7-fold) pathway activation. Finally, we demonstrate that following establishment of cell-cell contacts and transient Notch signaling in pellet cultures, followed by Notch signaling deactivation, resulted in a 1.5-fold increase in MSC chondrogenesis. Physiological constraints from harsh environmental conditions, such as from calcium limitation on acidic soils, is expected not only to affect species richness, but also species abundance distributions. Also, the effects of amendments by calcium addition (soil liming) on these assemblage characteristics are poorly understood. Because of their sensitivity towards calcium availability, we use snails as model organisms and integrate field surveys and literature data. Temperate forest snail data supported a rule-of-thumb calibration with pH measurements in water being one unit higher than in KCl buffer. The resulting large data set suggests stepwise changes in snail richness that occur at transitions in soil buffer systems, especially at pH 3.2. Species abundance distributions follow the logseries model in most soil buffer systems, except for the iron buffer range (pH ≤3.2) where they swap to the geometric model. Our findings thus suggest several smaller soil pH thresholds for snail assemblages associated with shifts between soil buffer systems, and a tipping point at the threshold to pH ≤3.2. Liming with ground carbonate rocks is a technique to temporarily increase soil pH and calcium availability in forest soils, but its effects on snail assemblages produced inconsistent results that did not meet expectations from the ameliorated soil pH and might warrant a re-evaluation of liming applications. This study utilized the confocal Raman microspectroscopy ( CRM) technique for the first time to investigate the degree of the penetration of toluidine blue-orto ( TBO) in artificial caries lesions produced by two distinct caries-inducing models. The dentin specimens ( n = 10) were divided into three groups: control, in vitro and in situ. Thereafter, the lesion depth and the demineralization level were evaluated by cross-sectional microhardness ( CSMH). CRM mapping across the dentin surface was assessed after the dye application. The CSMH and CRM data were analyzed by t-test and ANOVA, respectively ( P < 0.05). The values of the lesion depth and the demineralization areas were higher for in situ samples ( P < 0.05). The TBO penetration values (μm) for the control, in vitro and in situ groups were 44.8 ± 5.6, 46.1 ± 4.5 and 51.2 ± 8.5, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences among the groups ( P > 0.05). The rate of TBO penetration was detected up to about <50 μm and the demineralization level did not influence the results. We review the use of stable carbon isotope ratios (δC) and radiocarbon natural abundances (ΔC) for stream food web studies. The δC value of primary producers (e.g., periphytic algae, hereafter periphyton) in streams is controlled by isotopic fractionation during photosynthesis and variable δC of dissolved CO. When periphyton δC differs from that of terrestrial primary producers, the relative contribution of autochthony and allochthony to stream food webs can be calculated. Moreover, the variation in periphyton δC can reveal how much stream consumers rely on local resources because each stream habitat (e.g., riffle vs. pool, open vs. shaded) usually has a distinctive δC. However, periphyton δC often overlaps with that of terrestrial organic matter. On the other hand, periphyton ΔC is less variable than δC among habitats, and reflects the ΔC of dissolved CO, which could be a mixture of 'aged' (ΔC < 0 ‰) and 'modern' (ΔC > 0 ‰) carbon. This is because the ΔC is corrected by its δC value for the isotopic fractionation during photosynthesis. Recent studies and our data indicate that many stream food webs are supported by 'aged' carbon derived from the watershed via autochthonous production. The combined use of δC and ΔC allows robust estimation of the carbon transfer pathway in a stream food web at multiple spatial scales ranging from the stream habitat level (e.g., riffle and pool) to watershed level (autochthony and allochthony). Post-exercise heart rate recovery ( HRR) has been proposed as a measure of cardiac autonomic dysfunction in apparently healthy adults. We aimed to determine the effects of a lifestyle intervention on HRR among clinically obese premenopausal women. A randomized controlled trial was conducted to investigate the effects of a 3-month non-dieting lifestyle intervention program on cardiorespiratory fitness ( CRF) and HRR among healthy clinically obese premenopausal women. Thirty-one were randomly assigned to 3-month intensive lifestyle intervention and 31 served as controls. Sixty-one participants performed a maximal treadmill walking test with metabolic gas exchange. Baseline anthropometric measures were closely related to HRR at 1 min, which may indicate reduced parasympathetic reactivation. Post-exercise HRR at 60 s ( HRR60) increased from 21.3 ± 6.2 to 27.8 ± 10.2 bpm in the intervention group compared with a smaller reduction (26.8 ± 12.3 to 24.5 ± 9.9 bpm) in controls (test for interaction P = 0.0001). Summary 1. The massive synchronized flowering and subsequent mortality of understorey bamboo species occur in infrequent and unpredictable intervals in temperate and subtropical forests around the world. Because of the sporadic occurrence of these flowering episodes and the long intervals between events, very little is known about their consequences on biogeochemical cycling in natural ecosystems. 2. In 2001, a synchronized flowering and dieback of the native bamboo, Chusquea culeou E. Desv., occurred, covering more than 200 000 ha in the north-west region of Patagonia, Argentina. We explored the impacts of this gregarious flowering event on litter decomposition and nitrogen turnover in an old-growth southern beech forest for 3 years after the flowering event. 3. Bamboo litter decomposed significantly slower than overstorey tree litter, and decomposition in flowered patches overall was significantly reduced compared to remnant live understorey patches. In addition, soil mineral nitrogen was reduced in flowered patches, and nitrogen transformations were altered, most notably in the third year after the flowering event. 4. This infrequent phenomenon of gregarious flowering could have consequences for carbon and nutrient cycling, as low-quality standing dead biomass is gradually incorporated into soil organic matter pools. This study demonstrates that large biotically mediated perturbations of understorey vegetation can impact biogeochemical cycles in temperate forest ecosystems by reducing carbon turnover and altering nitrogen availability and transformations, even in the absence of physical disturbance. A 50-year-old female patient, who had had a long-term history of myelodysplastic syndrome and type II diabetes mellitus, had developed acute myelogenous leukemia and received allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT). She was being treated with tacrolimus, methotrexate and prednisolone for prophylaxis and treatment of graft-versus-host disease, and with intensive insulin therapy for better glycemic control. The patient suddenly developed marked leg edema at 27 days after starting intensive insulin therapy (on day 40 after BMT) without coexistence or exacerbation of apparent causes such as renal failure, cardiac dysfunction or leg thrombosis around the onset of leg edema. Interestingly, the leg edema regressed soon after daytime hyperglycemia and intensive insulin therapy were performed. Histopathological examination revealed slight dermal edema and small bullae with little inflammatory infiltration but no signs of autoimmune blistering diseases or vasculitis.
