Widespread hypoxia occurs seasonally across the Oregon continental shelf, and the duration, intensity, and frequency of hypoxic events have increased in recent years. In hypoxic regions, iron reduction can liberate dissolved Fe(II) from continental shelf sediments. Fe(II) was measured in the water column across the continental shelf and slope on the Oregon coast during summer 2022 using both a trace metal clean rosette and a high‐resolution benthic gradient sampler. In the summer, Fe(II) concentrations were exceptionally high (40–60 nM) within bottom waters and ubiquitous across the Oregon shelf, reflecting the low oxygen condition (40–70 μM) at that time. The observed inverse correlation between Fe(II) and bottom water oxygen concentrations is in agreement with expectations based on previous work that demonstrates oxygen is a major determinant of benthic Fe fluxes. Rapid attenuation of Fe(II) from the benthic boundary layer (within 1 m of the seafloor) probably reflects efficient cross‐shelf advection. One region, centered around Heceta Bank (~ 44°N) acts a hotspot for Fe release on the Oregon continental shelf, likely due to its semi‐retentive nature and high percent mud content in sediment. The results suggest that hypoxia is an important determinant of the inventory of iron is Oregon shelf waters and thus ultimately controls the importance of continental margin‐derived iron to the interior of the North Pacific Basin. The <3% dissimilar Amplicon Sequence Variant (ASV) clusters of the 18S‐V4 barcode were used as species‐proxies for the evaluation of ASV composition and ASV diversity indices characterizing the hitherto poorly investigated meiofaunal communities of the south‐eastern part of the Levantine basin. Accompanied by abundance measurements, the relationships of these characteristics with sedimentary and bottom terrain parameters were interpreted. The construction of community composition profiles, namely ASVs' list and their estimated abundances, was done using our previously established procedure (Harbuzov et al., 2022, Marine Genomics 65, 100980), combining metabarcoding with sample reads normalization by the abundance of hard‐bodied meiofaunal taxa. The study province included the 54–1418 m depth range, across vertical sub‐bottom horizons ranging 0–17 cm. Oxygen, hydrogen sulfide and methane concentrations in the pore water, as well as sediment grain size spectra and sedimentary protein and carbohydrate levels, were measured, followed by an evaluation of their involvement in the shaping of the meiofaunal communities' characteristics. Community composition was generally site‐and‐horizon dependent and its abundance decreased with increasing bottom depth and across sub‐bottom horizons, typical to benthic habitats which are nourished by organic carbon from the euphotic zone. The relatively sharply inclined continental slope bottom located in the northern part of the Israeli coast was an exception. Its meiofaunal community characteristics were speculated to be affected by intensive sediment mixing and lateral transport of food from the shelf, in addition to the effect of the euphotic zone‐originated food sources. To gain a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying spatial heterogeneity in ichthyoplankton communities in the SW Atlantic, we examined for the first time the latitudinal and continental shelf–slope gradients in ichthyoplankton structure and oceanographic features in the Campos Basin during the relaxation phase of coastal upwellings (late autumn to early winter). This region, located on SE Brazil's continental margin, is the most productive offshore oil basin in the country and has ecological relevance owing to the existence of areas that experiences mesoscale (tens to hundreds of kilometers) processes (eddies, filaments, and upwelling) caused by the interaction of continental shelf and slope circulation with deep water masses. The present study collected a total of 3892 fish eggs and 10,030 larvae from 36 sampling stations, averaging 22 eggs per 100 m3 and 56 larvae per 100 m3. A total of 250 taxa (5 for fish eggs and 248 for larvae) were identified, encompassing 80 families and 145 genera. Species distribution exhibited a considerable degree of spatial variability, which was related mostly to hydrological characteristics. In general, greater densities were associated with higher nutrient concentrations areas. Through distance‐based Redundancy Analysis, some discriminating species were found to associate with certain areas of the continental shelf characterized by colder temperatures. The ichthyoplankton distribution patterns suggested a potential influence from mesoscale oceanographic fronts, specifically those that induce upwelling of the cold and nutrient‐rich South Atlantic Central Water. The identification of important habitat and the behavior(s) associated with it is critical to conservation and place‐based management decisions. Behavior also links life‐history requirements and habitat use, which are key to understanding why animals use certain habitats. Animal population studies often use tracking data to quantify space use and habitat selection, but they typically either ignore movement behavior (e.g., foraging, migrating, nesting) or adopt a two‐stage approach that can induce bias and fail to propagate uncertainty. We develop a habitat‐driven Langevin diffusion for animals that exhibit distinct movement behavior states, thereby providing a novel single‐stage statistical method for inferring behavior‐specific habitat selection and utilization distributions in continuous time. Practitioners can customize, fit, assess, and simulate our integrated model using the provided R package. Simulation experiments demonstrated that the model worked well under a range of sampling scenarios as long as observations were of sufficient temporal resolution. Our simulations also demonstrated the importance of accounting for different behaviors and the misleading inferences that can result when these are ignored. We provide case studies using plains zebra (Equus quagga) and Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) telemetry data. In the zebra example, our model identified distinct "encamped" and "exploratory" states, where the encamped state was characterized by strong selection for grassland and avoidance of other vegetation types, which may represent selection for foraging resources. In the sea lion example, our model identified distinct movement behavior modes typically associated with this marine central‐place forager and, unlike previous analyses, found foraging‐type movements to be associated with steeper offshore slopes characteristic of the continental shelf, submarine canyons, and seamounts that are believed to enhance prey concentrations. This is the first single‐stage approach for inferring behavior‐specific habitat selection and utilization distributions from tracking data that can be readily implemented with user‐friendly software. As certain behaviors are often more relevant to specific conservation or management objectives, practitioners can use our model to help inform the identification and prioritization of important habitats. Moreover, by linking individual‐level movement behaviors to population‐level spatial processes, the multistate Langevin diffusion can advance inferences at the intersection of population, movement, and landscape ecology. The seafloor contains complex ecosystems where habitat heterogeneity influences biodiversity. Natural biological and geological features including vents, seeps and reefs create habitats that select for distinct populations of micro‐ and macrofauna. While largely studied for macrobiological diversity, built habitats may also select distinct microbiomes. Built habitat density on the seafloor is increasing with ocean sprawl expanding in the continental shelf and slope, potentially having widespread effects on benthic communities. This study addresses one type of built habitat, shipwrecks, on microbiomes in surrounding sediment. Using deep‐sea sediment samples (762 total) from the Gulf of Mexico, we report elevated diversity and a predictable core microbiome around nine shipwrecks. We show the sphere of influence of built habitats extends up to 300 m onto the seafloor. Supervised learning made predictions of sample proximity to structures based on frequency of taxa. Strongest predictions occurred in sediments nearest and furthest from sites for archaea and mid‐transect for bacteria. The response of archaea to built habitats was consistent across sites, while bacteria showed greater between site variability. The archaeal core shipwreck microbiome was enriched in taxa (e.g., Bathyarchaeia, Lokiarchaeia, Thermoplasmata) not present in the surrounding seafloor. Mapping sediment deposition and erosion by thermohaline ocean bottom currents is important for the development of ocean infrastructure, future geo resources and understanding the sedimentology of contourites and abyssal sediment wavefields. However, only a limited percentage (estimated 20%) of the ocean floor has been mapped directly through seismic or sonar imaging. To better delineate where zones of bottom current deposition and erosion exist, we develop a prediction from numerical model solutions and sedimentological measurements of the ocean floor. This is achieved by integrating three types of data, which include the following: (1) bottom current shear stress from a model run of the HYCOM numerical ocean model; (2) sedimentation rates from ocean lithospheric age and sediment thickness from the GlobSed Model; (3) the measured extents of bottom current deposits from sonar observations. Shear stresses and sedimentation rates inside and outside the mapped extents of bottom current deposits allow us to quantify the conditions that are conducive for bottom current deposition. These conditions are then extrapolated and displayed on a 1/12° arcsecond resolution map of the world's oceans and validated through comparison with known, mapped systems. Based on our prediction, around 12% of the ocean has significant deposition by bottom currents while only 1% has erosion. Most bottom current activity occurs where thermohaline currents impinge upon the ocean floor like on continental slopes or some areas of the abyssal plain. Deposition and erosion also occur where constriction of ocean bottom currents takes place as in straits and seaways. Inland basins (i.e. seas) and continental shelves are mostly disconnected from global‐ocean thermohaline bottom current conveyors and, therefore, have limited bottom current deposition and erosion. We have analyzed the MZ6 onshore‐offshore wide‐angle seismic profile of the MOZ3‐5 survey to investigate the crustal structure of the South Mozambique passive margin. The NNW‐SSE, 625 km‐long profile runs across the Mozambique coastal plain (MCP), the Continental Shelf and Slope, the Almirante Leite Ridge (ALR), the North Natal Valley (NNV), the Ariel Graben and the Dana Plateau of the Mozambique Ridge. Forward modeling through combined interpretation of the multichannel seismic, the main reflected and refracted phases of the wide‐angle, drill hole data and bathymetric data reveal: (a) a sedimentary cover poorly compacted up to 3 km‐thick, intruded by magmatic dykes that reach the seafloor at the ALR forming 0.5 to 5 km‐wide corrugated mounts, (b) between 2 and 7 km, thick magmatic or volcano‐clastic deposits are observed both at the MCP and NNV, forming a 40 km‐wide terrace at the center of MZ6 and southward‐dipping reflectors in the southern part interpreted as the Pre‐Neocomian Formation contemporary of the Karroo and/or Bombeni‐Movene magmatic events reached in several wells, (c) onshore, the 3‐layered crust reaches 39 km thickness, gradually thinning to ∼27 km at the southern end of MZ6. In the deepest layer, velocities exceed 7.15 km/s, reaching at its base 7.55 km/s at the vertical of the ALR. (d) the seismic Moho is marked by a strong reflection on the wide‐angle data. These results suggests that the basement is composed of slightly thinned and altered continental crust, most likely intruded by several phases of intense magmatism. Nevertheless, in the Western Indian Ocean, the initial pre‐beak‐up position of Antarctica plate respect to Africa plate is still under debate, mainly due to the lack of deep geophysical data. In 2016, an academic‐industrial collaboration succeeded in acquiring deep information along seven seismic profiles crossing the North Natal Valley (NNV) off the coast of Mozambique. The results falsify the presence of an oceanic crust in that area and thus most of the plate reconstruction models. The NNV presents a thick continental crust intrudedded by several phases of intense magmatism, with at its top, a volcano‐clastic pre‐Neocomian Fm contemporary of the crustal thinning and subsequent spreading between Africa and Patagonia plates. The Antarctic Slope Current is guided by the topographic gradient of the Antarctic continental slope and creates a dynamical barrier between the continental shelf and the open ocean. The current's vertical structure varies around the continent affecting cross‐slope water mass exchange with consequences for Antarctic mass loss, ventilation of the deep ocean, and carbon uptake. The Antarctic Slope Current is surface‐intensified in many regions but bottom‐intensified in regions of dense overflows. This study investigates the role of dense overflows in modifying the dynamics of the bottom‐intensified flow using a 0.1° global ocean‐sea ice model. The occurrence of bottom‐intensification is tightly linked with dense overflows and bottom speeds correlate with dense overflows on interannual time scales. A lack of vertical connectivity between the bottom and surface flow, however, suggests that the along‐slope bottom water flows are coincidentally co‐located with the Antarctic Slope Current, rather than dynamically a part of the current. Plain Language Summary: The Antarctic Slope Current is a narrow ocean current that travels around Antarctica following the continental slope. It separates the shallow and cold continental shelf from much warmer waters in the open ocean. Intrusions of the relatively warm water across the continental slope impacts melting of Antarctic ice shelves and global sea level rise. Understanding what controls the strength and variability of the Antarctic Slope Current is therefore important. The Antarctic Slope Current usually has the largest velocities near the surface, but there are regions where there is also a strong bottom flow. We use a coupled ocean‐sea ice model and show that the bottom flow is controlled by the export of very dense shelf water that flows down the continental slope in a few locations around the continent. However, the bottom and surface flow does not vary together on interannual time scales which tells us that the two components of the Antarctic Slope Current are largely independent. The result is important as the formation of dense shelf water is expected to reduce in the future which will impact the deep flow, but not the surface component. Active continental margins are tectonic sites with complex sedimentary processes. Tectono–sedimentary interactions occur over geological time and determine the modern morphology of the margin. However, such interactions have been poorly documented in high‐latitude regions. This study focuses on deep‐water sedimentary systems on the South Shetland convergent margin, which is the only remaining active continental margin in Antarctica. Numerous gullies, 20 canyons and three contourite drifts are identified by interpreting bathymetry, oceanography and reflection seismic data. Heavy mineral contents of a gravity core, located at a downslope elongated mounded drift, show the asynchronous interplay of downslope and alongslope processes. The rest of the margin is dominated by turbidity currents. Variations in the slope gradient control thalweg profiles and sinuosity of canyons. Tectonic‐related morphology restricts the distribution of contourite drifts. Earthquakes triggered by underplating and tectonic compression may induce slope instability at the lower flank of the plastered drift. Tectonic uplift influences the amount of sediments transported by ice sheets and controls the shelf stacking pattern. The mixed turbidite–contourite system transitions to separated canyon and drift systems from passive to active continental margins under the influence of the tectonic‐related morphology. A systematic comparison has been made among several convergent margins with similar tectonic settings. Results suggest that submarine canyons on these shelf‐slope systems have similar morphological features and are comparable in size. Coarse sediment input and steep continental slopes (mean slope 7 to 10°) control the canyon morphology on these margins. Therefore, this research has important implications for furthering the current understanding of sedimentary systems on high‐latitude convergent margins and tectono–sedimentary interactions. This paper presents a significant advancement in the understanding of tsunamigenic landslide hazard across the length of the Makassar Strait in Indonesia. We use statistical emulation across the length of the continental slope to conduct a probabilistic assessment of tsunami hazard on a regional scale, across 14 virtual coastal gauges. Focusing on the potential maximum wave amplitudes (distance between the wave crest and the still‐water level) from possible tsunamigenic landslide events, we generate predictions from Gaussian Process emulators fitted to input‐outputs from 50 training scenarios. We show that the most probable maximum wave amplitudes in the majority of gauges are between 1 and 5 m, with the maximum predicted amplitudes reaching values of up to 10 m on the eastern coast, and up to 50 m on the western coast. We also explore the potential use of Gaussian multivariate copulas to sample emulator prediction input values to create a more realistic distribution of volumes along the continental slope. The novel use of statistical emulation across a whole slope enables the probabilistic assessment of tsunami hazard due to landslides on a regional scale. This area is of key interest to Indonesia since the new capital will be established in the East Kalimantan region on the western side of the Makassar Strait. Understanding the interactions of submarine channels with seafloor deformations is challenging as these channels more often involve a wide variety of responses relying on both autogenic and allogenic factors. The effect of active growing structures on channel pathways is well documented, but the evolution of lateral migration and the internal architectures along the deflected channel bends around ongoing active structures remain poorly constrained. Here, we use 3D seismic interpretation and quantitative geomorphologic methods to examine the channel bend morphology and the kinematics of lateral migration near gravity‐driven tectonic deformation. Using high‐resolution seismic reflection data acquired from the offshore Niger Delta, two‐channel levee systems (Amaku Major System and Amaku Channel Levee System) have been recognized in the seismic survey. Each system consists of three channel complexes, recording five types of deflected channel bends, defined here as: (i) avulsed bend, (ii) confined bend, (iii) chute cut‐off bend, (iv) blocked bend and (v) kinked bend. Geomorphologic parameters including bend sinuosity, bend amplitude, along‐bend length, straight‐bend length, channel depth and width, were considered within the deflected channels. Lateral migration estimators; channel lateral shift (SH), and channel lateral spacing (CS), were assessed throughout the distances of cross‐sectional channel patterns. The lateral migration estimators (SH and CS) were used to estimate the expression of internal architectures and the evolution of lateral migration around seabed deformation at the scale of the channel complex. The results show that the morphology and internal architecture of the deflected bends, although developing in the same structural context, display varied responses to structural deformation. Unlike previously published models of channel‐fold interactions asserting tectonics as the solitary driver, here we demonstrate that the channel deflections around structures are sensitive to the lateral confinement produced by sediment relief of the outer levees, and the autogenic forcing of channel mechanisms. This study provides new insights into the evolution of submarine channels in active tectonic settings, shows detailed mechanisms of channel bends at a small scale and offers a better understanding of the distribution of sediments in the deep sea. The geodynamic response of continental margins to erosion may reveal current and past changes in the location of the continental slope. We model the three‐dimensional isostatic response to erosion along the retreating Beringian Margin to test the hypothesis that the margin and its canyons were dominantly eroded during the Pleistocene. Our results predict 900 m of flexural uplift, though evidence for this magnitude of uplift is not observed in Pleistocene and younger deposits, suggesting a substantial amount of margin erosion occurred pre‐Pleistocene. Uplift of this magnitude may be represented by a Late Miocene unconformity across the Bering Shelf and upwarped subsurface units at the base of the Beringian Margin. The distribution of uplift from varying canyon incision and margin retreat scenarios has implications for the extent of geodynamic response during erosional periods. We model the isostatic response to a range of submarine erosion scenarios along the Beringian Margin, which are hypothesized to have formed primarily during the Pleistocene. Our results show that the magnitude of uplift predicted by the mass of sediment removed along the Beringian is too substantial to have entirely occurred since the Pleistocene, suggesting the canyons are older than previously thought. Geophysical subsurface data may instead favor isostatic upwarping that began as early as the Miocene suggesting that margin retreat and canyon incision along the deeply incised Beringian Margin has been ongoing for several millions of years. Isopycnal eddy mixing across continental slopes profoundly modulates the ocean circulation and biogeochemistry. Yet this process must be parameterized in coarse‐resolution ocean models via an isopycnal eddy diffusivity prescribed with the Redi scheme. In this work, we evaluate the skill of physics‐based and data‐driven Redi variants in predicting the cross‐slope exchanges using a suite of offline‐mode parameterized tracer simulations for wind‐driven upwelling continental slope fronts, which commonly arise around the margins of subtropical gyres. The tested physics‐based Redi variants range from a constant eddy diffusivity to a recently proposed, bathymetry‐aware diffusivity augmented by the artificial neural network (ANN) that infers the mesoscale eddy kinetic energy from the mean flow and topographic quantities. Moreover, a purely data‐driven eddy diffusivity is learned by the ANN from the output data set of an eddy‐resolving model, whose solutions serve as the ground truth against which the parameterized tracer simulations are compared. Among all tested Redi variants, the ANN‐learned diffusivity and the bathymetry‐aware diffusivity outperform others in reproducing the tracer solutions of the eddy‐resolving model. However, a physics‐based Redi variant with local deficiencies can introduce global errors in the predicted tracer distribution, which calls for ongoing efforts in constraining the shelf‐to‐ocean transition of the isopycnal eddy diffusivity. A purely data‐driven diffusivity can nearly reproduce the diagnosed diffusivity from the eddy‐resolving model, which highlights the efficacy of machine learning techniques for parameterizing eddy processes across steep topography. This work serves as a key step toward parameterizing the isopycnal eddy mixing in ocean models with continental slopes. Recent progress in understanding Beaufort Gyre (BG) dynamics reveals an important role of ice‐ocean stress in stabilizing BG freshwater content (FWC) over seasonal to interannual timescales. But how the BG's stratification and FWC respond to surface forcing over decadal timescales has not been fully explored. Using a global ocean‐sea ice model, we partition the BG into upper, middle (halocline), and lower (thermocline) layers and perform a volume budget analysis over 1948–2017. We find that the BG's asymmetric geometry (with steep and tight isohalines over continental slopes relative to the deep basin) is key in determining the mean volume transport balance. We further find that a net Ekman suction during 1983–1995 causes the upper and middle layers to deflate isopycnally, while an enhanced Ekman pumping during 1996–2017 causes these layers to inflate both isopycnally and diapycnally, the latter via anomalous flux from the upper to the middle layer. Here we use an ocean‐sea ice model to explore such changes in its three characteristic layers (upper mixed‐layer water, Pacific Water in the middle layer, and Atlantic Water in the lower layer). We find that the asymmetry of the BG, which has been simplified as a symmetric bowl shape in most previous studies, is important in determining the BG's layered mean state. Over decadal timescales, changes in BG volume are controlled by annual‐mean Ekman pumping/suction resulting from combined wind and ice‐ocean stresses. This study emphasizes the role of asymmetric geometry in determining the BG mean volume balance. It also explores the role of mean flow across the gyre's lateral boundaries in regulating BG's volume and FWC over decadal timescales. Based on high‐quality two‐dimensional seismic profiles and well data, the seismic reflection characteristics from the late Pliocene and Pleistocene succession of the Qiongdongnan Basin in the South China Sea have been analysed. The result will help in understanding the sedimentological development of slope areas. Twenty coeval clinothems are recognized and four major clinothem types are distinguished. In addition, three types of shelf‐edge trajectories are recognized. The various parameters of the clinothems are analysed quantitatively and the relationships between the various clinothem types are studied in combination with the controlling roles. It is concluded that: (i) the shelf‐edge trajectories are related to the type of clinothem; (ii) fluctuations in the relative sea level, in combination with variations in sediment supply, result in different clinothem types and geometric parameters; these parameters show interdependencies; (iii) the alternations of progradation and aggradation of clinothems may provide information of the relative sea level and changes in sediment supply; (iv) some lowstand fans could develop at the foot of the slope in the central–eastern part of the basin when the relative sea level started to fall or began to rise. The results of the present study are consequently significant for further quantitative analyses of the characteristics and development of the continental slope, not only in the Qiongdongnan Basin, but also in other basins. The Gulf of Maine's lunar semidiurnal (M2) ocean tide exhibits spatially coherent amplitude changes of ∼1–3 cm on interannual time scales, though no causative mechanism has been identified. Here we show, using a specially designed numerical modeling framework, that stratification changes account for 32%–48% (Pearson coefficient 0.58–0.69) of the observed M2 variability at tide gauges from 1994 to 2019. Masking experiments and energy diagnoses reveal that the modeled variability is primarily driven by fluctuations in barotropic‐to‐baroclinic energy conversion on the continental slope south of the gulf's mouth, with a 1‐cm amplitude increase at Boston corresponding to a ∼7% (0.30 GW) drop in the area‐integrated conversion rate. Evidence is given for the same process to have caused the decade‐long M2 amplitude decrease in the Gulf of Maine beginning in 1980/81. The study has implications for nuisance flooding predictions and space geodetic analyses seeking highest accuracies. The Gulf Stream is the only pathway in the subtropical North Atlantic by which warm water flows poleward. This transport of warm water and return of cold water at depth is called the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). The dynamic method is applied to hydrocasts collected since the 1930s to estimate upper‐ocean transport (0–1,000 m) between the U.S. Continental Slope and Bermuda and separately to Africa with focus on the longest directly observable timescale. Calculating transport between the Slope and Bermuda eliminates the Gulf Stream's northern and southern recirculation gyres, while calculations between the Slope and Africa remove all other recirculating geostrophic flow. The net Slope‐Bermuda upper‐ocean transport is estimated to be 41.1 ± 0.4 Sv, decreasing by 2.0 ± 0.8 Sv between 1930 and 2020. The AMOC contribution is 18.4 ± 0.6 Sv, decreasing by 0.4 ± 0.6 Sv between 1930 and 2020. Whether and to what extent this reflects a slowdown of the AMOC or wind‐driven circulation cannot be established with certainty. Our estimate of a 0.4 Sv AMOC decrease is reported with low confidence. Depth‐averaged eddy buoyancy diffusivities across continental shelves and slopes are investigated using a suite of eddy‐resolving, process‐oriented simulations of prograde frontal currents characterized by isopycnals tilted in the opposite direction to the seafloor, a flow regime commonly found along continental margins under downwelling‐favorable winds or occupied by buoyant boundary currents. The diagnosed cross‐slope eddy diffusivity varies by up to three orders of magnitude, decaying from O104m2/s $\mathcal{O}\left(1{0}^{4}\hspace*{.5em}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}/\mathrm{s}\right)$ in the relatively flat‐bottomed region to O10m2/s $\mathcal{O}\left(10\hspace*{.5em}{\mathrm{m}}^{2}/\mathrm{s}\right)$ over the steep continental slope, consistent with previously reported suppression effects of steep topography on baroclinic eddy fluxes. To theoretically constrain the simulated cross‐slope eddy fluxes, we examine extant scalings for eddy buoyancy diffusivities across prograde shelf/slope fronts and in flat‐bottomed oceans. Among all tested scalings, the GEOMETRIC framework developed by D. P. Marshall et al. (2012, https://doi.org/10.1175/JPO-D-11-048.1) and a parametrically similar Eady scale‐based scaling proposed by Jansen et al. (2015, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocemod.2015.05.007) most accurately reproduce the diagnosed eddy diffusivities across the entire shelf‐to‐open‐ocean analysis regions in our simulations. This result relies upon the incorporation of the topographic suppression effects on eddy fluxes, quantified via analytical functions of the slope Burger number, into the scaling prefactor coefficients. The predictive skills of the GEOMETRIC and Eady scale‐based scalings are shown to be insensitive to the presence of along‐slope topographic corrugations. This work lays a foundation for parameterizing eddy buoyancy fluxes across large‐scale prograde shelf/slope fronts in coarse‐resolution ocean models. The global ocean mass has significantly changed during recent decades, which may induce changes in the abyssal ocean circulation. Due to the lack of in situ observations, the response of the abyssal South China Sea (SCS) circulation to ocean mass changes remains unclear. The ocean state estimate, Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO), provides the long‐term ocean mass changes in terms of ocean bottom pressure (OBP). Here we use the ECCO OBP data to quantify decadal changes in the abyssal SCS circulation and reveal a weakening trend. The OBP gradient trend manifests in forms of an anomalous anticyclonic circulation that is intensified by topographic effects along the continental slopes to reduce the existing abyssal circulation. The weakening abyssal circulation corresponds to the weakening Luzon Strait overflow that yields a decreasing vorticity budget in the abyssal SCS. The 2022 volcanic eruption in Tonga caused an unusually large tsunami around the Pacific. It travels with a faster apparent velocity and has larger amplitudes at long distances than what would be expected from a conventional tsunami from the volcanic source. This tsunami was generated by the moving atmospheric Lamb wave and traveled at the speed of the Lamb wave (0.31 km/s). Japanese data showed the amplitude of this first tsunami becomes small when approaching the coast, due to the weaker air‐sea coupling at the shallow depth. This wave split when passing the continental slope, and traveled at the speed of the ocean gravity wave. Therefore, the tsunami observed at the coast is delayed by thousands of seconds from the passage of the Lamb wave. Tsunamis generated by this atmospheric mechanism have not been previously observed by modern digital recording systems and should be considered in the tsunami warning systems. The offshore area of the Otway Basin (south‐eastern Australia) is dominated by multibranched canyons where mass‐transport complexes are widely distributed. This study integrates high‐resolution multibeam and seismic data to investigate the importance of mass‐transport complexes in dictating the evolution of canyons. The study interprets three regionally distributed mass‐transport complexes that fail retrogressively and affect almost 70% of the study area. Within the mass‐transport complexes, seven canyons that initiated from the continental shelf edge and extended to the lower slope are observed. Although the canyons share common regional tectonics and oceanography, the scales, morphology and distribution are distinctly different. This is linked to the presence of failure‐related scarps that control the initiation and formation of the canyons. The retrogressive failure mechanisms of mass‐transport complexes have created a series of scarps on the continental shelf and slope. In the continental shelf, where terrestrial input is absent, the origin of the canyons is related to local failures and contour current activities, occurring near the pre‐existing larger headwall scarps (ca 120 m high, 3 km long). The occurrence of these local failures has provided the necessary sediment input for subsequent gravity‐driven, downslope sediment flows. In the continental slope, the widespread scarps can capture gravity flows initiated from the continental shelf, developing an area of flow convergence, which greatly widens and deepens the canyons. The gradual diversion and convergence through mass‐transport complex related scarps have facilitated the canyon confluence process, which has fundamentally changed the canyoning process. Thus, this study concludes that the retrogressive failure mechanism of mass‐transport complexes has a direct influence on the initiation, distribution and evolution of the canyons. The scarps associated with mass‐transport complexes have greatly facilitated the delivery of sediments and marine plastics from the shelf edge into the deep oceans, especially in areas where fluvial input is missing. Shallow seabed depressions attributed to focused fluid seepage, known as pockmarks, have been documented in all continental margins. In this study, we demonstrate how pockmark formation can be the result of a combination of multiple factors—fluid type, overpressures, seafloor sediment type, stratigraphy and bottom currents. We integrate multibeam echosounder and seismic reflection data, sediment cores and pore water samples, with numerical models of groundwater and gas hydrates, from the Canterbury Margin (off New Zealand). More than 6800 surface pockmarks, reaching densities of 100 per km2, and an undefined number of buried pockmarks, are identified in the middle to outer shelf and lower continental slope. Fluid conduits across the shelf and slope include shallow to deep chimneys/pipes. Methane with a biogenic and/or thermogenic origin is the main fluid forming flow and escape features, although saline and freshened groundwaters may also be seeping across the slope. The main drivers of fluid flow and seepage are overpressure across the slope generated by sediment loading and thin sediment overburden above the overpressured interval in the outer shelf. Other processes (e.g. methane generation and flow, a reduction in hydrostatic pressure due to sea‐level lowering) may also account for fluid flow and seepage features, particularly across the shelf. A great earthquake struck the Semidi segment of the plate boundary along the Alaska Peninsula on 29 July 2021, re‐rupturing part of the 1938 rupture zone. The 2021 MW 8.2 Chignik earthquake occurred just northeast of the 22 July 2020 MW 7.8 Simeonof earthquake, with little slip overlap. Analysis of teleseismic P and SH waves, regional Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) displacements, and near‐field and far‐field tsunami observations provides a good resolution of the 2021 rupture process. During ∼60‐s long faulting, the slip was nonuniformly distributed along the megathrust over depths from 32 to 40 km, with up to ∼12.9‐m slip in an ∼170‐km‐long patch. The 40–45 km down‐dip limit of slip is well constrained by GNSS observations along the Alaska Peninsula. Tsunami observations preclude significant slip from extending to depths <25 km, confining all coseismic slip to beneath the shallow continental shelf. Most aftershocks locate seaward of the large‐slip zones, with a concentration of activity up‐dip of the deeper southwestern slip zone. Some localized aftershock patches locate beneath the continental slope. The surface‐wave magnitude MS of 8.1 for the 2021 earthquake is smaller than MS = 8.3–8.4 for the 1938 event. Seismic and tsunami data indicate that slip in 1938 was concentrated in the eastern region of its aftershock zone, extending beyond the Semidi Islands, where the 2021 event did not rupture. The rupture extended northeastward ∼170 km, ending just short of the Semidi Islands. The slip is concentrated on the megathrust, from 32‐km to 40‐km deep. Shallow slip at depths <25 km is precluded by the tsunami observations, confining all rupture to beneath the shallow continental shelf. Most aftershocks are up‐dip of the large‐slip regions with a concentration in the shallow region of the southwestern rupture zone. Comparisons of observations and rupture models with the 1938 event indicate distinct slip distributions and seismic energy release, with the 1938 event being somewhat larger and extending further northeast than the 2021 rupture. This provides strong evidence that the 2021 event is not a simple repeat failure of the 1938 rupture. The Shumagin seismic gap along the Alaska Peninsula experienced a major, MW 7.8, interplate thrust earthquake on 22 July 2020. Several available finite‐fault inversions indicate patchy slip of up to 4 m at 8–48 km depth. There are differences among the models in peak slip and absolute placement of slip on the plate boundary, resulting from differences in data distributions, model parameterizations, and inversion algorithms. Two representative slip models obtained from inversions of large seismic and geodetic data sets produce very different tsunami predictions at tide gauges and deep‐water pressure sensors (DART stations), despite having only secondary differences in slip distribution. This is found to be the result of the acute sensitivity of the tsunami excitation for rupture below the continental shelf in proximity to an abrupt shelf break. Iteratively perturbing seismic and geodetic inversions by constraining fault model extent along dip and strike, we obtain an optimal rupture model compatible with teleseismic P and SH waves, regional three‐component broadband and strong‐motion seismic recordings, hr‐GNSS time series and static offsets, as well as tsunami recordings at DART stations and regional and remote tide gauges. Slip is tightly bounded between 25 and 40 km depth, the up‐dip limit of slip in the earthquake is resolved to be well‐inland of the shelf break, and the rupture extent along strike is well‐constrained. The coseismic slip increased Coulomb stress on the shallow plate boundary extending to the trench, but the frictional behavior of the megathrust below the continental slope remains uncertain. We select two representative slip models obtained from prior seismic and geodetic inversions for tsunami modeling and find that they give distinct tsunami predictions despite having only a minor shift of slip by ∼20 km relative to shelf break. Large differences in tsunami excitation occur when seafloor deformation extends to the continental slope under deeper water. We perform iterative inversion of seismic and geodetic observations and forward modeling of tsunami signals to obtain an optimal slip model compatible with teleseismic waves, regional seismic recordings, hr‐GNSS time series and static offsets, along with tsunami recordings at DARTs and tide gauges. Precise placement of the slip distribution beneath the continental shelf controls the strength and timing of seaward tsunamis, with waveforms varying nonlinearly with seafloor deformation extending across the shelf break. The earthquake increased Coulomb stress on the shallow megathrust, but uncertainty in the shallow frictional behavior leaves it unclear whether a future large event can occur there. The Arctic is a climate‐sensitive area, responding rapidly to present changes, but for the past changes, the record is still incomplete. For instance, the Weichselian glacial history of the Svalbard–Barents Sea Ice Sheet (SBIS) has largely been reconstructed based on studies of the fragmentary Spitsbergen terrestrial and shelf records. However, the sediments removed from the land and shelf areas during peak glacials were deposited on trough mouth fans located along the continental slope. By studying the stratigraphy and processes of the trough mouth fans, comprising a more complete sediment archive, our new data have allowed gaps in the Weichselian glacial history of the SBIS to be refined and filled. Here we present new lithological and geochronological data from the Kongsfjorden Trough Mouth Fan, closely linked to the advance and decay of the SBIS. High‐resolution TOPAS seismic profiles reveal three distinct packages of glacigenic debris flows (GDFs) within its upper stratigraphy, each interpreted to represent an advance of the SBIS to the shelf edge. A radiocarbon dated, 12.6‐m‐long core from the southern flank of the Kongsfjorden Trough Mouth Fan penetrates trough sediments directly linked to the youngest GDF package and terminates in the second GDF, allowing us to study the last two Kongsfjorden ice‐stream advances in greater detail than was previously possible. The age model of core GS10‐164‐09PC, based on combining 14C‐, 18O‐stable isotope and magnetic susceptibility data, spans the last ~54 ka. An Early Weichselian glacial advance is tentatively dated to have ended at ~90 ka. A second peak glaciation is estimated at ~70 ka, followed by a deglaciation from ~54 ka. An ice rafted debris‐rich unit (U7) dated between 38 and 34 ka, followed by a plumite (U6), indicates an advance of unknown extent. The Last Glacial Maximum advance is dated to before 24 ka BP, followed by a rapid deglaciation at ~15 ka. The presence of coarser‐grained sorted sediments at the present seafloor is attributed to the influence of the West‐Spitsbergen Current, acting on water depths of at least 846 m, and is thought to have worked in the vicinity of the coring site since ~14 ka BP. Landscapes of vertical relief, such as mountains and continental slopes, intensify ecological and climatological variation within narrow spatial windows. Seasonal vertical migrants exploit this variation during their residence in, and movements between, vertically stratified seasonal ranges. Animals in terrestrial, marine and even human‐ecological systems undergo similar patterns of seasonal vertical movements. The diversity of arenas in which vertical migration evolved lends insight to the factors promoting seasonal use of landscapes of relief. Because animals must contend with both endogenous circannual rhythms and exogenous environmental seasonality, vertical migrants may be sensitive to inconsistent change across stratified seasonal ranges under climate change. To better understand how ongoing and future climatic and environmental changes are likely to impact vertical migrants, we examine vertical migration in the context of niche tracking and niche switching. Whereas niche trackers minimize variation in realized environmental conditions throughout their seasonal movements, niche switchers undergo seasonal transitions in realized niche space. These strategies mediate the relationship between migrants and their changing environment, and can be used to forecast impacts of future change and effectively conserve systems of vertical migration. Niche tracking may be hindered by inconsistent or unpredictable environmental change along a single niche axis across strata, while niche switching may be sensitive to incongruous spatiotemporal change across factors. We suggest that climate change will affect seasonal patterns in vertical environments discontinuously across time, space and strata, and that vertical migrants are likely to face additional anthropogenic threats that interact with environmental seasonality. The North Atlantic phytoplankton bloom depends on a confluence of environmental factors that drive transient periods of exponential phytoplankton growth and interannual variability in bloom magnitude. I analyze interannual bloom variability in the North Atlantic via extreme value theory where the generalized extreme value distribution (GEVD) is fitted spatially to annual maxima of satellite‐measured surface chlorophyll. I find excellent agreement between the observed distribution of interannual bloom maxima and those predicted from the GEVD. The spatial distribution of fitted GEVD parameters closely follows basin bathymetry where the largest extremes and heaviest distribution tails are found on the continental shelves and slopes. Trend analyses suggest weak evidence for changes in GEVD parameters, despite regional trends in mean chlorophyll levels and sea surface temperature. These results provide a framework to quantify interannual bloom variability and call for further work examining how extreme blooms propagate through food webs and contribute to carbon export. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fifth Assessment Report lists sea‐level rise as one of the major future climate challenges. Based on pre‐industrial and historical‐and‐future climate simulations with the Community Earth System Model, we analyze the projected sea‐level rise in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean with two sets of simulations at different horizontal resolutions. Compared with observations, the low resolution (LR) model simulated Gulf Stream does not separate from the shore but flows northward along the entire coast, causing large biases in regional dynamic sea level (DSL). The high resolution (HR) model improves the Gulf Stream representation and reduces biases in regional DSL. Under the RCP8.5 future climate scenario, LR projects a DSL trend of 1.5–2 mm/yr along the northeast continental shelf (north of 40° N), which is 2–3 times the trend projected by HR. Along the southeast shelf (south of 35° N), HR projects a DSL trend of 0.5–1 mm/yr while the DSL trend in LR is statistically insignificant. The different spatial patterns of DSL changes are attributable to the different Gulf Stream reductions in response to a weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Due to its poor representation of the Gulf Stream, LR projects larger (smaller) current decreases along the north (south) east continental slope compared to HR. This leads to larger (smaller) trends of DSL rise along the north (south) east shelf in LR than in HR. The results of this study suggest that the better resolved ocean circulations in HR can have significant impacts on regional DSL simulations and projections. A significant fraction of the Eulerian‐mean downwelling feeding the lower limb of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) occurs along the subpolar North Atlantic continental slopes and is maintained by along‐boundary densification and large‐scale geostrophic balance. We here use Argo and shipboard hydrography data to map the 2002–2015 long‐term mean density field along the boundary via a dedicated optimal interpolation tool. The overall downstream densification implies an Eulerian‐mean downwelling of 2.12 ± 0.43 Sv at 1100 m depth between Denmark Strait and Flemish Cap. A clear regional pattern emerges with downwelling in the Irminger Sea and western Labrador Sea and upwelling along Greenland western continental slope. Comparisons with independent cross‐basin estimates confirm that vertical overturning transport across the marginal seas of the subpolar North Atlantic mainly occurs along the continental slopes, and suggest the usefulness of hydrographic data in providing quantitative information about the sinking branch of the AMOC. Fluid seepage sometimes impacts occurrences of submarine landslides, but the role of landslide deposits in fluid seepage is often neglected. Bathymetric data show that more than 1,000 seabed mounds are scattered over an elongated area at the shelf edge of the northwestern South China Sea. Vertical seismic pipes in the subsurface are spatially correlated with both surface mounds and buried landslide deposits. Detailed analyses within the three‐dimensional (3D) seismic survey show that at least 221 of 231 (∼96%) of the mounds have spatial correlation with the top edges of multiple stages of buried landslide scarps that are stepping seawards from deep to shallow, indicating a causal relationship between buried landslide deposits and fluid seepage. Fluids emitted via differential compaction and hydrofracturing in geological setting characterized by frequent tectonism, flowed upwards along shear surfaces and scarps of landslide deposits and pipes, and eventually provided hard substrates for mound building. We conclude that different degrees of compaction between landslide deposits and surrounding sediment and generation of fractures driven by high hydraulic pressure, induced the release of overpressure fluids below bases of landslide deposits, which served as effective fluid conduits and perhaps as part of walls of overpressure fluid layers. The building and release of overpressure fluids were also impacted by ample sediment input and frequent tectonic movements like faulting. Primary productivity in the Arctic Ocean is experiencing dramatic changes linked to the receding sea ice cover. The vertical transport of nutrients from deeper water layers is the limiting factor for primary production. Here, we compare coincident profiles of turbulence and nutrients from the Siberian Seas in 2007, 2008, and 2018. In all years, the water column structure in the upstream region of the Arctic Boundary Current promotes upward nutrient transport, in contrast to the regions further downstream, and there are first indications for an eastward progression of these conditions. In summer 2018, strongly enhanced vertical nitrate flux and primary production above the continental slope were observed, likely related to a remote storm. The estimated contribution of these elevated fluxes above the slope to the Pan‐Arctic vertical nitrate supply is comparable with the basin‐wide transport, and is predicted to increase with declining sea ice cover in the future. Skates are characterised by conservative body morphology which hampers identification and leads to frequent taxonomic confusion and market mislabelling. Accurate specimen classification is crucial for reliable stock assessments and effective conservation plans, otherwise the risk of extinction could be unnoticed. The misclassification issue is evident for the genus Dipturus, distributed worldwide, from the continental shelf and slope to the deep sea. In this study, barcode cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI) sequences were used along with species delimitation and specimen assignment methods to improve taxonomy and zoogeography of species of conservation interest inhabiting the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. In this study, we provided new evidence of the occurence of D. nidarosiensis in the Central‐Western Mediterranean Sea and the lack of Atlantic‐Mediterranean genetic divergence. The Atlantic endangered species D. laevis and D. batis clustered together under the same molecular operational taxonomic unit (MOTU) with any delimitation methods used, while the assignment approach correctly discriminated specimens into the two species. These results provided evidence that the presence of the barcode gap is not an essential predictor of identification success, but the use of different approaches is crucially needed for specimen classification, especially when threshold‐ or tree‐based methods result less powerful. The analyses also showed how different putative, vulnerable, species dwelling across South‐Western Atlantic and South‐Eastern Pacific are frequently misidentified in public sequence repositories. Our study emphasised the limits associated to public databases, highlighting the urgency to verify and implement the information deposited therein in order to guarantee accurate species identification and thus effective conservation measures for deep‐sea skates. The Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) is an important fishery species widely distributed in the Southern Ocean, especially in areas covered by sea ice. Understanding fish distributions and life cycles, including the transport and survival of eggs and larvae, is essential for the assessment and sustainable management of the fishery. However, owing to difficulties with in situ winter observations, information on the early life stages of D. mawsoni is lacking. Here, we investigated the transport pathways of fish eggs and larvae through a particle tracking study, using satellite‐derived ocean surface velocities in the East Antarctic region, which includes important D. mawsoni habitats and exploratory fisheries. Our results indicate that particles released from continental slopes are more likely to be successfully transported to suitable settlement grounds than those released from the BANZARE Bank (the southern region of the Kerguelen Plateau), which is situated further north and has been hypothesized to be a potential spawning ground for D. mawsoni. This study demonstrates successful source–settlement connections in relation to ocean recirculation and suggests important settlement regions for D. mawsoni larvae in the East Antarctic region. Tropical marginal seas host important sedimentary archives that may be exploited to reveal past changes in continental erosion, chemical weathering, and ocean dynamics. However, these records can be challenging to interpret due to the complex interactions between climate and particulate transport across ocean margins. For the southern South China Sea over the last 90 Kyr, we observe a contrasting temporal relationship between the deposition of clay minerals and magnetic minerals, which were associated with two different hydrodynamic modes. Fine‐grained clay minerals can be carried in suspension by ocean currents, leading to a rapid response to regional climate‐driven inputs. In contrast, changes in magnetic mineralogy were linked to glacial‐interglacial sea level variability, from which we infer a control by bedload transport and resuspension. Overall, this study indicates that the transfer pathways and mechanisms imparted by varying hydrodynamic conditions exert a substantial influence on the distribution of terrigenous material in continental margin sediments. This depositional framework must be considered when interpreting the timing of changes in weathering and erosion proxies hosted in sediment records from marginal seas. Specifically, fine‐grained clay minerals may reveal a rapid response to continental weathering changes, whereas the magnetic records are influenced by the transport of denser coarser‐grained minerals under the influence of sea level change. The North Atlantic deep water (NADW), according to the classic ocean circulation theory, moves southward as a deep western boundary current (DWBC) even though it may veer into interior and then rejoin DWBC when encountering regional circulation features, such as eddy‐driven recirculation. In potential vorticity dynamics, the eastern side of the Mid‐Atlantic Ridge (MAR) may provide a similar topographic support as the continental slope off the western boundary for a southward transport of NADW. In this article, we quantify the mean meridional NADW transports on both sides of the MAR using a data‐assimilated product and find that the flow in the eastern basin contributes about 38±14% $38\pm 14\%$ of the net southward transport of NADW from 50° to 35°N. Our study points to the importance of observing NADW transport variations on the eastern side of the MAR in order to monitor the transport strength of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Using an ocean reanalysis product, the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCOV4r4), we show that the steady‐state NADW meridional transport in the basin east of the MAR accounts for about 38±14% $38\pm 14\%$ of the meridional transport in the whole basin between 35° and 50°N. It is found that the NADW circulation pathways are strongly influenced by ocean bottom topography. For example, the eastern flank of the MAR acts as a "western boundary" in the eastern basin against which NADW flows southward. The topographic constraint from the MAR weakens south of 35°N due to changes in the MAR height and smaller planetary vorticity f $f$. Idealized facies of bottom current deposits (contourites) have been established for fine‐grained contourite drifts in modern deep‐marine sedimentary environments. Their equivalent facies in the ancient record however are only scarcely recognized due to the weathered nature of most fine‐grained deposits in outcrop. Facies related to the erosional elements (i.e. contourite channels) of contourite depositional systems have not yet been properly established and related deposits in outcrop appear non‐existent. To better understand the sedimentary facies and facies sequences of contourites, the upper Miocene contourite depositional systems of the South Rifian Corridor (Morocco) is investigated. This contourite depositional system formed by the dense palaeo‐Mediterranean Outflow Water. Foraminifera assemblages were used for age‐constraints (7.51 to 7.35 Ma) and to determine the continental slope depositional domains. Nine sedimentary facies have been recognized based on lithology, grain‐size, sedimentary structures and biogenic structures. These facies were subsequently grouped into five facies associations related to the main interpreted depositional processes (hemipelagic settling, contour currents and gravity flows). The vertical sedimentary facies succession records the tectonically induced, southward migration of the contourite depositional systems and the intermittent behaviour of the palaeo‐Mediterranean Outflow Water, which is mainly driven by precession and millennial‐scale climate variations. Tides substantially modulated the palaeo‐Mediterranean Outflow Water on a sub‐annual scale. This work shows exceptional examples of muddy and sandy contourite deposits in outcrop by which a facies distribution model from the proximal continental slope, the contourite channel to its adjacent contourite drift, is proposed. This model serves as a reference for contourite recognition both in modern environments and the ancient record. Establishing the foundations for a sustainable use of deep‐sea resources relies on increasing knowledge on this inaccessible ecosystem, which is challenging with traditional methods. The analysis of environmental DNA (eDNA) emerges as an alternative, but it has been scarcely applied to deep‐sea fish. Here, we have analyzed the fish eDNA contained in oceanic vertical profile samples (up to 2000 m depth) collected throughout the continental slope of the Bay of Biscay. We detected 52 different fish species, of which 25 were classified as deep‐sea fish. We found an increase of deep‐sea fish richness and abundance with depth, and that eDNA reflects day–night community patterns and species‐specific vertical distributions that are consistent with the known diel migratory behavior of many mesopelagic fishes. These findings highlight the potential of eDNA to improve knowledge on the fish species inhabiting the dark ocean before this still pristine ecosystem is further exploited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inflow of warm modified Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) onto the Antarctic continental shelf and into ice shelf cavities is a key driver of Antarctic ice shelf mass loss. While recent research has advanced understanding of CDW heat transport onto the continental shelf, the fate of CDW on the shelf is less understood. Here, we use Lagrangian particle tracking in an ocean‐sea ice model without ice shelf cavities to map the residence time of CDW on the Antarctic continental shelf. Mean residence times vary from <1 month in the East Antarctic to >1 year in the West Antarctic. In regions of dense water formation, transformation of CDW on the shelf limits access of CDW to ice shelves, despite strong onshore CDW heat transport. Elsewhere transformation of CDW on the shelf is weak, implying that temperature on the shelf is limited by heat transport onto the shelf or the offshore heat reservoir. Multiple processes regulate the amount of warm water that reaches the Antarctic ice shelves, and the relative importance of these processes in different regions is not well known. Here, we conduct a virtual particle tracking experiment in a state‐of‐the‐art ocean model to trace the pathways and timescales of warm water on the Antarctic continental shelf. We find that there is a large regional variation in how long warm waters spend on the continental shelf from less than a month to well over a year. In the regions along the continental slope where very dense water formed near the coast flows off the shelf to the abyssal ocean, this is balanced by a strong inflow of warm water onto the continental shelf, which is rapidly converted to denser water, limiting the heat from reaching the ice shelves. Elsewhere warm water can remain on the continental shelf unmodified for a long time, so the heat available for ice shelf melt is instead limited by the strength of the flow of warm water onto the continental shelf. Pacific Summer Water (PSW) plays a critical role in the ecosystem of the western Arctic Ocean, impacting sea‐ice melt and providing freshwater to the basin. Most of the water exits the Chukchi Sea shelf through Barrow Canyon, but the manner in which this occurs and the ultimate fate of the water remain uncertain. Using an extensive collection of historical hydrographic and velocity data, we demonstrate how the PSW outflow depends on different wind conditions, dictating whether the warm water progresses eastward or westward away from the canyon. The current carrying the water westward along the continental slope splits into different branches, influenced by the strength and extent of the Beaufort Gyre, while the eastward penetration of PSW along the shelfbreak is limited. Our results provide the first broad‐scale view of how PSW is transferred from the shelf to the basin, highlighting the role of winds, boundary currents, and eddy exchange. The current carrying the water westward along the continental slope subsequently splits into different branches farther downstream. This is modulated by the strength and extent of the Beaufort Gyre, a large recirculating flow in the basin. In contrast, the signature of the warm water in the current flowing to the east is limited. Here, we provide the first observational broad‐scale view of the pathways and evolution of warm Pacific‐origin water from the shelf to the basin, and clarify the effects of wind, boundary currents, and small‐scale turbulent motions. Aim: Understanding how fish food webs emerge from planktonic and benthic energy pathways that sustain them is an important challenge for predicting fisheries production under climate change and quantifying the role of fish in carbon and nutrient cycling. Methods: We present a size‐ and trait‐based fish community model that explicitly resolves the dependence of fish on pelagic and benthic energy pathways to globally predict fish food web biogeography. The emergent food web structures are compared with regionally calibrated models in three different ecosystem types and used to estimate two fish ecosystem functions: potential fisheries production and benthic–pelagic coupling. Results: Variations in pelagic–benthic energy pathways and seafloor depth drive the emergent biogeography of fish food webs from shelf systems to the open ocean, and across the global ocean. Most shelf regions have high benthic production, which favours demersal fish that feed on pelagic and benthic pathways. Continental slopes also show a coupling of benthic and pelagic pathways, sustained through vertically migrating and interacting mesopelagic and deep‐sea demersal fish. Open ocean fish communities are primarily structured around the pelagic pathway. Global model results compare favourably with data‐driven regional food web models, suggesting that maximum weight and vertical behaviour can capture large‐scale variations in food web structure. Synchronous interaction between bottom currents and turbidity currents has been reported often in channel–levée systems where the thickness of the turbidity currents exceeds that of the levées. Such interplay between along‐slope and down‐slope sedimentary processes is one of the mechanisms by which 'mixed turbidite–contourite systems' can originate. However, bottom currents flow over large areas of the seafloor, including continental slopes characterized by deeply incised submarine canyons rather than channel levées. In these cases, a direct interaction between along‐slope and down‐slope currents is, theoretically, unlikely to take place. In this study, oceanographic, swath bathymetry, multichannel seismic data and sediment cores are used to investigate a 25 km long, 10 km wide and up to 0.5 km thick deep‐sea late Quaternary deposit that sits adjacent to the north‐west flank of one of the major canyons in the North Atlantic, the São Vicente Canyon, in the Alentejo Basin (south‐west Iberian margin). The area receives the influence of a strong bottom current, the Mediterranean Outflow Water, which has swept the continental slope at different water depth ranges during glacial and interglacial periods. Architectural patterns and sediment characteristics suggest that this sedimentary body, named Marquês de Pombal Drift, is the result of the interaction between the Mediterranean Outflow Water (particularly during cold periods) and turbidity currents flowing along the São Vicente Canyon. Because the canyon is incised significantly deeper (ca 1.5 km) than the thickness of turbidity currents, an additional process, in comparison to earlier models, is needed to allow the interaction with the Mediterranean Outflow Water and transport sediment out of the canyon. In the São Vicente Canyon, and likely in other canyons worldwide, interaction of turbidity currents with contour currents requires intermediate nepheloid layers that export the finer‐grained fraction of turbidity currents out of the canyon at the boundary between major water masses. The pencil cardinal Epigonus denticulatus is a small deep‐water fish inhabiting continental slopes usually between 300 and 600 m depth. We report the first record of E. denticulatus in the Azores archipelago, where one specimen was found floating by fisherman off Faial island. Meristic and morphometric characters are in accordance with those reported for the species and molecular analyses further supported species identity. The record of E. denticulatus as a native species in the Azores increases the number of Epigonus species in the region to a total of three. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climatic changes have decreased the stability of the Gulf Stream (GS), increasing the frequency at which its meanders interact with the Mid-Atlantic Bight (MAB) continental shelf and slope region. These intrusions are thought to suppress biological productivity by transporting low-nutrient water to the otherwise productive shelf edge region. Here we present evidence of widespread, anomalously intense subsurface diatom hotspots in the MAB slope sea that likely resulted from a GS intrusion in July 2019. The hotspots (at ~50 m) were associated with water mass properties characteristic of GS water (~100 m); it is probable that the hotspots resulted from the upwelling of GS water during its transport into the slope sea, likely by a GS meander directly intruding onto the continental slope east of where the hotspots were observed. Further work is required to unravel how increasingly frequent direct GS intrusions could influence MAB marine ecosystems. Plain Language Summary As the climate has warmed, the changing large-scale circulation of the northwest Atlantic has resulted in increasing western boundary current instability. As a consequence, onshore intrusions of Gulf Stream (GS) water into the Northeast U.S. continental shelf have become increasingly frequent. While these intrusions of low-nutrient GS water have been thought to potentially diminish biological productivity, we present evidence of an unexpectedly productive subsurface diatom bloom resulting from the direct intrusion of a GS meander toward the continental shelf. These results suggest that changing large-scale circulation has consequences for regional productivity that are not detectable by satellites by virtue of their occurrence well below the surface. Mesoscale eddy mixing profoundly modulates the ocean tracer budgets, and is typically parameterized via the isopycnal eddy diffusivity in ocean climate models. However, relatively little is known about the magnitude/structure of isopycnal eddy diffusivity across continental slopes, which hinders the understanding and prediction of shelf‐open ocean exchanges. In this study, we quantify the isopycnal eddy diffusivity in a suite of eddy‐resolving, process‐oriented simulations of mesoscale turbulence over continental slopes under upwelling‐favorable winds, a configuration that commonly arises around the margins of subtropical gyres. Cross‐shore eddy diffusivity is found to be suppressed in the upper open ocean occupied by strong alongshore flows, but enhanced at depths where alongshore flows are weakened, a finding that is consistent with the enhancement of eddy mixing near the steering level. Over continental slopes, eddy diffusivity also strengthens at mid‐depths, but almost vanishes near the seafloor. To theoretically constrain the simulated eddy fluxes, we examine the scaling of eddy diffusivity proposed by Ferrari and Nikurashin (2010, https://doi.org/10.1175/2010JPO4278.1), which accounts for the suppression of eddy mixing induced by the relative propagation of eddies to the mean flow. We show that, apart from the mean‐flow suppression effect, the eddy anisotropy effect induced by steep topography shapes both the horizontal and vertical structures of cross‐shore eddy diffusivity. Finally, we propose prospective closures of the eddy propagation speed and eddy anisotropy effect over continental slopes using the large‐scale flow and bathymetric quantities. This work offers a basis upon which a "slope‐aware" parameterization of mesoscale eddy mixing can be developed. Across continental margins, turbulent eddies drive the exchanges between shelf seas and open ocean, which modulate the coastal water properties and sea level, upon which human habitation depends the most. Understanding the impact of eddies on shelf‐ocean exchanges in a changing climate is therefore critical, and would typically rely on predictive ocean climate models. However, owing to limited computer powers, even state‐of‐the‐art ocean climate models must adopt a grid spacing that is too coarse to resolve turbulent eddies across continental margins. Instead, these models rely on parameterization schemes that infer eddy effects from the large‐scale, explicitly resolved flow properties. This work investigated the utility of a parameterization developed based on open ocean turbulent properties in quantifying eddy tracer fluxes across continental margins, following which further refinements of the parameterization have been made. Our results show that, apart from previously considered ingredients, the tendency of steep topography across continental margins to "squeeze" the eddy shapes must be incorporated into this parameterization. This work provides a basis upon which a parameterization scheme for eddy tracer fluxes across both continental margins and open ocean environments can be devised. Intermediate nepheloid layers (INLs) form important pathways for the cross‐slope transport and vertical export of particulate matter, including carbon. While intermediate maxima in particle settling fluxes have been reported in the Eurasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean, direct observations of turbid INLs above the continental slope are still lacking. In this study, we provide the first direct evidence of an INL, coinciding with enhanced mid‐water turbulent dissipation rates, over the Laptev Sea continental slope in summer 2018. Current velocity data show a period of enhanced downslope flow with depressed isopcynals, suggesting that the enhanced turbulent dissipation is probably the consequence of the presence of an unsteady lee wave. Similar events occur mostly during ice free periods, suggesting an increasing frequency of episodic cross‐slope particle transport in the future. The discovery of the INL and the episodic generation mechanism provide new insights into particle transport dynamics in this rapidly changing environment. Plain Language Summary: In the Arctic Ocean deep basins, only a tiny fraction of the algae that grows in the surface layer sinks down to the sea floor. Most of the particles reaching the sea floor originate from the shallower regions closer to the coast. These particles have already settled on the sea floor once, and originate from rivers or algae that grew, died and sank down in shallow regions. Later, these particles are lifted off the ground again by strong turbulent motions and transported toward deeper regions in the middle of the water column. These lift‐off and transport events happen only occasionally, and have not been directly observed in the Eurasian part of the Arctic Ocean yet. Also, we present a new mechanism for the creation of turbulence, which is necessary to lift particles off the sea floor. This mechanism happens mostly during the summer season, when less sea ice is present. Based on this seasonality, it is likely that sediment transport events will become more frequent in the future, when the Arctic sea ice is further declining. The European eel hatches in the Sargasso Sea and migrates across the Atlantic Ocean toward Europe. At the continental shelf, larvae metamorphose into glass eels and then recruit to coastal habitats and estuaries. Among other cues, glass eels orient in situ using lunar cues, but what role this lunar compass plays in their recruitment to the coast is unknown. To assess this, we incorporated empirical in situ observations of glass eel swimming and lunar‐driven orientation into a biophysical advection model. We simulated dispersal of glass eels drifting with the North Atlantic Current to test the hypothesis that lunar‐driven swimming and orientation behavior affects recruitment to North Sea coasts. Particles were released from the continental slope north of Scotland, an obligate passage for migrating eel larvae. Four numerical experiments were conducted: one with passive drift and three including glass eel swimming speeds (ranging from 3 to 12 cm/s) and lunar‐driven orientation. With a speed of 3 cm/s, the lunar compass increased recruitment to the North Sea coasts of Southwestern Norway and Scotland by 34%–40%. Conversely, orientation behavior decreased recruitment to northern areas like Iceland (−46%), the Faroe Islands (−39%) and Northern Norway (−49%). Behavior affected the timing of recruitment to Southwestern Norway, causing peaks of abundance in May–June, but not to other regions. These results show that lunar‐driven orientation and swimming behavior observed in glass eels substantially increases their recruitment to North Sea coasts. There remains a limited understanding of the controls of pre-existing structures on the architecture of deep-water progradational sequences. In the Northern Taranaki Basin (NTB), New Zealand, Pliocene post-extensional sedimentary sequences overlie Miocene back-arc volcaniclastic units. We utilize seismic reflection datasets to investigate the relationships between the buried back-arc mound-shaped structures, and the spatio-temporal changes in clinoform architecture and the associated progradational system elements within the overlying continental slope margin sequences. Our results reveal the following: (a) buried mound-shaped structures in the northern domain of the study area, overlain by younging progression of shelf-to-basin prograding clinoforms; (b) folding of the deeper clinoforms that systematically decrease in magnitude with shallowing depth from the top of the seamounts; (c) overall, the N-S-trending continental slope margin evolves from a highly curvilinear/angular trend in the deeper clinoforms (Units 1 and 2) into a rectilinear geometry within the shallower post-extensional intervals (Unit 3 and shallower); (d) Units 1 and 2 characterized by dominance of stacked offlap breaks and over-steepened (7-10°) clinoform foreset slopes in the northern domain, and dominance of gently dipping foreset slopes (<6°) in the south; (e) Unit 3 shows very low (<5°) and intermediate (5-7°) foreset slopes across the entire survey; (f) in the northern domain, differential loading by prograding sequences about the buried seamounts and horst-graben structures induced a differential compaction of the deeper units, which influenced a temporal pinning of the prograding slope margin in pre-Unit 2 times and (g) wide, closely spaced channel incision into over-steepened slopes dominate the deeper prograding sequence in the northern domain, whereas narrower, straighter channels dominate the south. We show that the buried pre-existing structures constitute rigid buttresses that modulated the syn-depositional topography and post-depositional architecture of the prograding sequences in the NTB. Interbedded contourites, turbidites and pelagites are commonplace in many deep‐water slope environments. However, the distinction between these different facies remains a source of controversy. This detailed study of calcareous contourites and associated deep‐marine facies from an Eocene–Miocene sedimentary succession on Cyprus clearly documents the diagnostic value of microfacies in this debate. In particular, the variability of archetypical bi‐gradational contourite sequences and their internal subdivision (bedding, layering and lamination) are explored. Contourites can be distinguished from turbidites, pelagites and hemipelagites by means of carbonate microfacies in combination with bed‐scale characteristics. Particle composition provides valuable information on sediment provenance. Depositional texture, determined by the ratio between carbonate mud and bioclasts, is crucial for identifying bi‐gradational sequences in both muddy and sandy contourites, and normally‐graded sequences in turbidite beds. Equally important are the type and preservation of traction structures, as well as the temporality and impact of bioturbation. Shell fragmentation under conditions of increased hydrodynamic agitation (textural inversion) is recognized as a carbonate‐specific feature of bioclastic sandy contourites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The processes and deposits of deep‐water submarine channels are known to be influenced by a wide variety of controlling factors, both allocyclic and autocyclic. However, unlike their fluvial counterparts whose dynamics are well‐studied, the factors that control the long‐term behaviour of submarine channels, particularly on slopes undergoing active deformation, remain poorly understood. We combine seismic techniques with concepts from landscape dynamics to investigate quantitatively how the growth of gravitational‐collapse structures at or near the seabed in the Niger Delta have influenced the morphology of submarine channels along their length from the shelf edge to their deep‐water counterpart. From a three dimensional (3D), time‐migrated seismic‐reflection volume, which extends over 120 km from the shelf edge to the base of slope, we mapped the present‐day geomorphic expression of two submarine channels and active structures at the seabed, and created a Digital Elevation Model (DEM). A second geomorphic surface and DEM raster—interpreted to closer approximate the most recent active channel geometries—were created through removing the thickness of hemipelagic drape across the study area. The DEM rasters were used to extract the longitudinal profiles of channel systems with seabed expression, and we evaluate the evolution of channel widths, depths and slopes at fixed intervals downslope as the channels interact with growing structures. Results show that the channel long profiles have a relatively linear form with localized steepening associated with seabed structures. We demonstrate that channel morphologies and their constituent architectural elements are sensitive to active seafloor deformation, and we use the geomorphic data to infer a likely distribution of bed shear stresses and flow velocities from the shelf edge to deep water. Our results give new insights into the erosional dynamics of submarine channels, allow us to quantify the extent to which submarine channels can keep pace with growing structures, and help us to constrain the delivery and distribution of sediment to deep‐water settings. Various deep‐water deposits developed in the Yinggehai Basin and Qiongdongnan Basin (Ying‐Qiong Basin) in the northern South China Sea, making the two basins significantly hydrocarbon‐producing areas and ideal for studying the genetic mechanism and sedimentary characteristics of deep‐water clastic rocks. Using cores, image well logging, heavy mineral assemblages, and seismic data, we thoroughly studied the geometry, tectonic background, driving mechanism, and source‐to‐sink process of deep‐water deposits in the study area. The results showed that: (1) there were five genetic mechanisms of deep‐water clastic rock, i.e., slides, slumps, debris flows, turbidity currents, and bottom currents. (2) The sliding deposits were distributed from the delta front to the continental slope toe. The slumping deposits were mainly distributed at the continental slope toe or the basin's central area, far from the delta front. The turbidity deposits were widely developed in the deep‐water area, but with huge differences in thickness. The bottom currents mainly reworked previous deposits far from the slope. (3) Slip and extension along the preexisting fault zone were the main structural factors that drive the axial channel formation at the slope foot. (4) The sand‐rich gravity sediment flows in the Ying‐Qiong basin were primarily caused by the direct supply of terrigenous debris into the marine environment over the slope break.
