Background: Renal replacement therapy (RRT) may affect coagulation and platelet function in critically ill patients. However, the mechanism and the difference in the impact on coagulation between intermittent hemodialysis (iHD) and continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate and compare the impact of iHD and CRRT on coagulation and platelet function. Methods: Critically ill patients undergoing RRT were classified into the iHD group or the CRRT group. After the first blood sampling, patients underwent either a single session of hemodialysis or 48 h of CRRT, then a second blood sample was taken. Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), platelet aggregometry and conventional coagulation tests were performed. The primary outcome was a change in extrinsically activated ROTEM (EXTEM) clotting time (CT). Results: 60 dialysis sessions from 56 patients were finally included, with 30 dialysis sessions per group. EXTEM CT was prolonged significantly after dialysis in the iHD group (90 [74, 128] vs. 74 [61, 91], p < 0.001), but did not change in the CRRT group (94.4 ± 29.4 vs. 91.6 ± 22.9, p = 0.986). The platelet aggregation did not change after both iHD and CRRT. A change in EXTEM CT was significantly greater in the iHD group compared to the CRRT group (p = 0.006). The difference in the incidence of bleeding events was insignificant between the two groups (p = 0.301). Conclusions: EXTEM CT was significantly prolonged after iHD, but this change was not shown after CRRT. Platelet function was not affected by both dialysis modalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal ions have regulatory activities of multi‐tissue regeneration but usually interrupt early coagulation, resulting in an abnormal hematoma structure that is not conducive to long‐term repair or regeneration. To address free metal ions immobilization during the coagulation phase and effectively promote ionic bioactivities through controlled macrophage uptake after coagulation, metal ion “adjuvants” are required. [Si─O4] tetrahedron has a unique coordination tetrahedral structure to capture various metal ions and adsorb plasma proteins such as fibrinogen to facilitate macrophage uptake via receptor‐mediated endocytosis during the degradation of the fibrin network. Taking advantage of the hypoxia induction and tissue regeneration ability of copper ions, Cu[Si─O4] tetrahedrons are prepared which successfully immobilized copper ions and addressed the coagulation interruption. Cu[Si─O4] tetrahedrons effectively promote copper ionic uptake by macrophages via LRP1‐mediated endocytosis to create a hypoxia microenvironment and promote periodontal multi‐tissue regeneration. Therefore, [Si─O4] tetrahedron is a kind of advanced multifunctional metal ion “adjuvants” that can capture metal ions and assist their transmembrane transporting to address metal ion‐induced coagulation interruption and promote multi‐tissue regeneration, providing a new strategy for metal ion‐mediated biotherapy research. ABSTRACT Introduction Aim and Methods Results and Conclusions The actual prevalence of the qualitative fibrinogen abnormalities dysfibrinogenemia and hypodysfibrinogenemia is unknown. The major reasons are that patients with dysfibrinogenemia are frequently asymptomatic, and a recommended screening test, the Clauss fibrinogen assay, cannot completely distinguish qualitative from quantitative abnormalities. We previously established a high‐throughput screening test (Clauss‐CWA) to identify dysfibrinogenemia with high specificity and sensitivity by the Clauss fibrinogen assay alone.This was a single‐center, observational study to estimate the prevalence of dysfibrinogenemia using Clauss‐CWA technology. A total of 25 471 patients in Nagoya University Hospital were screened to identify patients with suspected dysfibrinogenemia. The suspected patients were investigated by further confirmatory analyses, such as antigenic fibrinogen determination, reptilase time, fibrin polymerization analysis, and scanning electron microscopy.Of the 25 471 enrolled patients, five with suspected dysfibrinogenemia were identified. Unfortunately, one patient was not confirmed due to a lack of plasma samples. The ratio of functional to antigenic fibrinogen was decreased, and the reptilase time was prolonged in the four patients. Interestingly, two of them showed normal functional fibrinogen levels due to acute inflammatory responses. Fibrin polymerization was impaired, and structural abnormalities were found in the fibrinogen from the patients. In some cases, functional fibrinogen levels may not be effective for identifying functional fibrinogen abnormalities. Introduction: Specific assays of plasma rivaroxaban level are not always readily available with short turnaround time, which hamper the management of urgent clinical situations. In this study, we aimed to build a predictive formula of plasma rivaroxaban levels from international normalized ratio (INR) value and validated in real world clinical situations. Methods: Ninety‐four patients who were taking rivaroxaban participated in the study. Patients were randomized into testing cohort and validation cohorts. The prediction formula was built from the testing cohort and then validated in validation cohort. The predictive performance was further validated on real‐world clinical requests. Results: The root mean square error (RMSE) of the predictive formula for the testing and validation cohorts were 61.81 and 69.32 ng/mL, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity for the formula to predict the threshold plasma rivaroxaban level of 75 ng/mL were 95% (95% CI: 85.4%–100%) and 87.5% (95% CI: 71.3%–100%), respectively, in real‐world clinical situations. Conclusion: Plasma rivaroxaban level of threshold level of 75 ng/mL can be calculated from prediction formula by INR value with satisfactory accuracy and it can be used to guide the decision for reversal. Background: Although direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) have been used in the adult population for over a decade, DOACs use has begun to rise in pediatric populations since FDA approval of rivaroxaban and dabigatran, DOACs offer several advantages for pediatric patients, to other anticoagulants, including a similar safety profile, minimal lab monitoring, and ease of administration. The rise in DOAC use has led to an increasing number of pediatric patients managed on DOACs presenting for elective and urgent procedures. Perioperative management of anticoagulation is often challenging for providers due to the lack of expert consensus guidelines and the difficulty in balancing a patient's thrombotic risk with bleeding risk for a given procedure. Aims: Using the most up to date literature, we provide a focused review on the perioperative management of DOACs in pediatric patients. Conclusions: This work presents a focused review for pediatric anesthesiologists on clinically available DOACs, perioperative monitoring and management of DOACs, as well as options and indications for reversal. While consensus expert practice guidelines are still needed, we hope this work will familiarize perioperative physicians with these agents, recommended uses, and potential perioperative management. In this study, the potential positive or negative effects of the coagulation process during the adsorption of micropollutants were investigated in treated waste water. Single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were employed as adsorbents in batch adsorption processes. Alum was used as a coagulant in batch coagulation experiments carried out in the laboratory to coagulate water samples obtained from effluents at the advanced biological wastewater treatment plant in the center of Zonguldak (ZWWTP), Turkey. The ultrafiltration process (UF) was used to demonstrate the importance of the dissolved organic matter content (DOM) for the removal of micropollutants by coagulation and adsorption. Consequently, coagulation was found to be effective in the removal of hydrophobic organics, that is, DOM fractions with molecular weights of 5 kDa and 1–3 kDa, while adsorption with SWCNT was effective in the removal of hydrophilic organics (<1 kDa). SWCNT adsorption was effective for the removal of carbamazepine, diclofenac, and triclosan in combined treatment steps. Furthermore, the removal of carbamazepine, diclofenac, and triclosan was above 90% with SWCNT adsorption before coagulation. It was concluded that the significant correlation between micropollutant removal and the reduction in UV254 is attributed to the general non‐selectivity of adsorption on the SWCNTs surface. Micropollutants and UV254 absorbing compounds adsorb simultaneously. It can be reasonably deduced that a high/low adsorptive removal of a specific micropollutant is typically accompanied by a high/low removal of UV254‐absorbing substances. Even though the majority of micropollutants also absorb UV254, their concentrations in municipal wastewater are insignificant in comparison to the overall UV254 measurements. Hence, correcting the actual UV254 measurements of the combined treatment for removal by coagulation produces adsorptive UV254 removal. In other words, if the removal of UV254 by coagulation is already known, the actual UV254 measurements obtained in a combined treatment step can be adjusted to produce UV254 removal by SWCNT adsorption. Therefore, UV254 can be used as a control parameter for carbamazepine, diclofenac, and triclosan removal and SWCNT dosing control utilizing differential UV254 measurements can be implemented. Plastic debris is unavoidably released into the ecosystems, and their physicochemical and mechanical qualities deteriorate when exposed to the environment. This, ultimately, leads to the generation of tiny fragments of plastic, which are known as nanoplastics (<1000 nm) and microplastics (<5 mm). Over the past few years, the pollution of synthetic polymers has been reported in almost all the compartments of the environment across the globe. It is regarded as a hazard to both human health and natural systems. In addition, synthetic polymers act as vectors for contaminants as they can adsorb and accumulate contaminants from seawater. The accumulation of plastic waste in the environment and its widespread presence have drawn the attention of policymakers and the public. This global issue has led to the creation of numerous remediation solutions by innovators in previous decades, either to clear up old waste or to stop plastic from entering the various matrices of the environment. This review focused on the extensive scientific research available on effective techniques for removing plastic debris to promote positive action and progress in this important area. Despite the various challenges, these techniques offer vital opportunities, from increasing awareness to enhancing environmental quality. Further, the article has been enriched by incorporating bibliometric data that illustrates the widely used methods for removing microplastics from various environmental matrices. According to the data analysis, numerous remediation techniques have been developed to date (2010 and 2024). These techniques encompass various approaches, among which the chemical‐based methods enjoy more success. This success can be attributed to the diverse advantages offered by chemical‐based methods over other remediation techniques. There is an increasing demand for fresh cheese varieties such as paneer because they offer ease of production, and time savings. Studies have been conducted on understanding the impact of milk composition on paneer quality, but there is no study on the effect of processing conditions on textural, rheological, and structural properties. To improve understanding of the impacts of processing on the quality attributes of paneer, six different samples were prepared in triplicate using two milk pre‐heat treatments (90°C/no hold or 90°C/10&#x02009;min), and three coagulation temperatures (CT‐70, 80 or 90°C). Extensive interactions were observed between β‐lactoglobulin and κ‐casein at higher CT. An increase in G′ and G″ values of paneer was observed at 90°C CT. Formation of dense protein networks with less porous structure was observed at higher CT. Objective: To establish reference intervals using a new point‐of‐care thromboelastometry device in dogs for the extrinsically activated test (EX‐test), intrinsically activated test (IN‐test), fibrin polymerization test (FIB‐test), ecarin test (ECA‐test), and tissue plasminogen activator test (TPA‐test) and to investigate the effects of storage time on the results. Design: Prospective clinical study in 2022. Setting: University teaching hospital. Animals: Forty‐eight healthy privately or university‐owned dogs were prospectively enrolled and included on the basis of normal physical examination and normal baseline laboratory results (CBC, biochemistry profile, prothrombin time, and activated partial thromboplastin time [aPTT]). Interventions: After a 30‐minute storage time, the EX‐test, IN‐test, FIB‐test, ECA‐test, and TPA‐test were performed on citrated blood samples. To determine the effect of storage time, 11 samples had the EX‐test, FIB‐test, and IN‐test repeated 90 and 150 minutes after sample collection. Measurements and Main Results: Ten thromboelastometry parameters were evaluated for each test. Reference intervals were calculated using the robust method for parametric data, and the robust Box–Cox transformed or nonparametric methods were used for nonparametric data. Increasing storage time resulted in more hypocoagulable tracings. A correlation was found between the IN‐test and aPTT (r = 0.62, P < 0.0001). Other weak to moderate correlations were seen between thromboelastometry parameters and platelet count and hematocrit. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: The development of reference intervals for the thromboelastometry device allows for the clinical use of this technology. Analyzing samples after a prolonged storage time of more than 30 minutes may result in erroneous results. Results may also be affected by an abnormal hematocrit or platelet count. Given the prevalence of hematological conditions, surgeries, and trauma incidents, hemostats—therapeutics designed to control and arrest bleeding—are an important tool in patient care. The prophylactic and therapeutic use of hemostats markedly enhances survival rates and improves the overall quality of life of patients suffering from these conditions. Since their inception in the 1960s, hemostats have witnessed remarkable progress in terms of the active ingredients utilized, therapeutic outcomes, demonstrated efficacy, and the storage stability. In this review, we provide a comprehensive analysis of commercially available hemostats approved by the FDA, along with newer investigative hemostats currently in active clinical trials. We delve into the modality of active ingredients, route of administration, formulation type, and disease indications of these approved and investigative hemostats. Further, we analyze the trends observed in the hemostat actives for Hemophilia A and B, concluding with insights into the emerging patterns and noteworthy developments to watch for in this dynamic field. The complement system, comprising over 30 proteins, is integral to the immune system, and the coagulation system is critical for vascular homeostasis. The activation of the complement and coagulation systems involves an organized proteolytic cascade, and the overactivation of these systems is a central pathogenic mechanism in several diseases. This review describes the role of complement and coagulation system activation in critical illness, particularly sepsis. The complexities of sepsis reveal significant knowledge gaps that can be compared to a profound abyss, highlighting the urgent need for further investigation and exploration. It is well recognized that the inflammatory network, coagulation, and complement systems are integral mechanisms through which multiple factors contribute to increased susceptibility to infection and may result in a disordered immune response during septic events in patients. Given the overlapping pathogenic mechanisms in sepsis, immunomodulatory therapies currently under development may be particularly beneficial for patients with sepsis who have concurrent infections. Herein, we present recent findings regarding the molecular relationships between the coagulation and complement pathways in the advancement of sepsis, and propose potential intervention targets related to the crosstalk between coagulation and complement, aiming to provide more valuable treatment of sepsis. The article discusses the challenges posed by lipemic samples in diagnostic laboratories due to lipid interference in spectrophotometric methods. The study examines the use of high-speed centrifugation to mitigate this interference in anti-Xa activity measurement for patients on anticoagulants. Results show that high-speed centrifugation did not significantly impact anti-Xa activity measurement and was effective in overcoming lipemia for unfractioned heparin and low molecular weight heparin. The aim of the document is to provide guidance and recommendations for the performance and interpretation of activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) and prothrombin time (PT) plasma mixing tests in clinical laboratories in all regions of the world. The following areas are included in this document: preanalytical, analytical, postanalytical, and quality assurance considerations as they relate to the proper performance and interpretation of plasma mixing tests. Background and Aim: The development of acute pancreatitis (AP) is strongly linked to blood clotting and fibrinolysis issues. Modern clinical practices now utilize advanced blood markers like thrombin–antithrombin III complex (TAT), plasmin‐α2‐plasmin inhibitor complex, thrombomodulin (TM), and tissue plasminogen activator–inhibitor complex (t‐PAIC) to assess thrombosis risk. Our study used a highly sensitive chemiluminescence technique to measure these markers in AP patients, aiming to determine their early predictive value for AP severity. Methods: There were 173 patients with AP, all of whom developed symptoms within 72 h; 102 individuals had onset symptoms within 48 h. The biomarkers were measured upon admission before determining the severity of AP. Results: The levels of TAT, plasmin‐α2‐plasmin inhibitor complex, TM, and t‐PAIC were significantly higher in the severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) group compared with the mild acute pancreatitis and moderate severe acute pancreatitis groups. For the patients within 72 h of onset, TAT, TM, and t‐PAIC predicted the occurrence of SAP. For the patients within 48 h of onset, TAT and t‐PAIC predicted the occurrence of SAP. The area under the curve (AUC) of prediction models is similar to Bedside Index for Severity in Acute Pancreatitis (BISAP) but significantly higher than C‐reactive protein (P < 0.05). Notably, t‐PAIC had a larger AUC than TAT, BISAP, and C‐reactive protein. Conclusion: In the initial 48 h, plasma TAT and t‐PAIC levels may predict the development of SAP. Within 72 h, plasma levels of TAT, TM, and t‐PAIC may predict the development of SAP, and the TAT + TM + t‐PAIC prediction model achieved a maximum AUC of 0.915, comparable to BISAP. Spinning fibers from carbon nanotube (CNT)/superacid dispersions has emerged as a promising strategy for industrial‐scale production of high‐performance CNT fibers (CNTFs). The oxygen content and types of functional groups on CNT surfaces significantly influence dispersion, assembly processes, and fiber properties. In this study, Tuball‐SWCNTs were purified and oxidized at varying levels. The dispersion behavior of CNTs with different oxidation levels in chlorosulfonic acid was systematically observed, and the mechanical properties of fibers spun from these dispersions were compared. By adjusting the dispersion concentration, highly oriented CNTFs were produced with a specific strength of 1.03 N/tex, a tensile strength of 1.59 GPa, and an electrical conductivity of 3.58 MS/m. Further investigations indicated that oxygen‐containing functional groups decrease the coagulation rate, increasing the maximum draw ratio during spinning and improving CNT alignment in the fibers. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrated that these functional groups (−OH, ‐COOH) enhance load transfer between CNTs through hydrogen bonding. This specific strength is the highest achieved using Tuball‐SWCNTs for superacid‐spun fibers, surpassing previous works due to the oxidation‐controlled coagulation rate, enhanced fiber orientation, and improved load transfer via hydrogen bonding. To develop standardized in vitro thrombogenicity test methods for evaluating medical device materials, three platelet activation biomarkers, beta‐thromboglobulin (β‐TG), platelet factor 4 (PF4), soluble p‐selectin (CD62P), and a plasma coagulation marker, thrombin–antithrombin complex (TAT), were investigated. Whole blood, drawn from six healthy human volunteers into Anticoagulant Citrate Dextrose Solution A was recalcified and heparinized over a concentration range of 0.5–1.5 U/mL. The blood was incubated with test materials with different thrombogenic potentials for 60 min at 37°C, using a 6 cm2/mL material surface area to blood volume ratio. After incubation, the blood platelet count was measured before centrifuging the blood to prepare platelet‐poor plasma (PPP) and platelet‐free plasma (PFP) for enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay analysis of the biomarkers. The results show that all four markers effectively differentiated the materials with different thrombogenic potentials at heparin concentrations from 1.0 to 1.5 U/mL. When a donor‐specific heparin concentration (determined by activated clotting time) was used, the markers were able to differentiate materials consistently for blood from all the donors. Additionally, using PFP instead of PPP further improved the test method's ability to differentiate the thrombogenic materials from the negative control for β‐TG and TAT. Moreover, the platelet activation markers were able to detect reversible platelet activation induced by adenosine diphosphate (ADP). In summary, all three platelet activation markers (β‐TG, PF4, and CD62P) can distinguish thrombogenic potentials of different materials and detect ADP‐induced reversible platelet activation. Test consistency and sensitivity can be enhanced by using a donor‐specific heparin concentration and PFP. The same test conditions are applicable to the measurement of coagulation marker TAT. Objective: To compare the accuracy of a point‐of‐care coagulation analyzer (POCCA) with a reference laboratory coagulation analyzer (LabCA) and to evaluate for confounding factors that could alter the performance of the POCCA. Design: Prospective, observational study. Setting: Two university veterinary teaching hospitals. Animals: Forty‐three client‐owned dogs undergoing coagulation testing between April 2020 and June 2021. Methods: Samples were obtained from dogs undergoing coagulation testing as part of a diagnostic workup. Prothrombin time (PT) and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) were measured on the POCCA and on the LabCA. PCV, platelet count, total plasma protein, hyperbilirubinemia, hemolysis, lipemia, and autoagglutination were recorded. Results: Moderate correlation was seen for PT and strong correlation was seen for aPTT between the POCCA and the LabCA (PT: 0.59, P < 0.0001; aPTT: 0.71, P < 0.0001). The POCCA results were consistent with normal or hypocoagulable samples for 30 of 38 PT and 33 of 37 aPTT results, as identified by the LabCA. Samples with PCV of 30%–55% were moderately correlated (PT: 0.63, P = 0.0004; aPTT: 0.63, P = 0.0003), but those outside that range were more likely to register an error message on the POCCA or provide disparate results. When hemolysis was present, there was a weak correlation between the POCCA and the LabCA for PT (rho: 0.38 [95% confidence interval: 0.19–0.76], P = 0.18) and a strong correlation for aPTT (rho: 0.86 [95% confidence interval: 0.62–0.95], P < 0.0001). Samples with hyperbilirubinemia were strongly correlated for PT (0.97, P = 0.002) but not for aPTT. Lipemia and autoagglutination were not observed. Conclusion: There was an acceptable correlation in patients with PCV within the manufacturer's recommended reference range; however, measurements on samples with PCV outside the reference range were inconsistent with the LabCA. Introduction: Patients with von Willebrand disease (VWD) require administration of von Willebrand factor (VWF) concentrates peri‐operatively. Concerns about FVIII accumulation after repetitive injections of a 1:1 ratio VWF/FVIII clotting factor concentrate (CFC) led this study to explore the recovery and FVIII accumulation over time. Methods: This monocentre study examined patients with VWD receiving perioperative 1:1 ratio CFC infusions. CFC dosing was based on body weight and endogenous VWF/FVIII activity. FVIII and VWF activity was monitored at T0 (baseline), T1 (15 min postinfusion), and trough levels at T2‐T6 (24‐120 h). Results: We included 125 patients, undergoing 125 procedures (63 major surgeries, 62 minor), with a median of two CFC infusions (IQR 1–3). With a mean administered dose of 35.7 IU/kg CFC, recovery rates of FVIII and VWF were 2.6 IU/dL per IU/kg and 2.4 IU/dL per IU/kg, respectively. Mean FVIII levels at T0 were 62 (SD 51.9), T1: 164 (SD 80.4), T2: 155 (SD 62.8), T3: 162 (SD 59.8), T4: 124 (SD 78.4), and T5: 120 (SD 65.3) IU/dL. Mean VWF activity levels at T0 were 29 (SD 25.0), T1: 133 (SD 43.7), T2: 92 (SD 37.2), and T3: 86 (SD 37.5) IU/dL. Subgroup analysis in 47 patients with more than three infusions, showed no accumulation of mean FVIII levels. Conclusion: This perioperative study demonstrated excellent FVIII and VWF recovery of a 1:1 ratio VWF product in patients with VWD. Stable FVIII and VWF activity levels were observed after repeated infusions, without accumulation. Most major surgeries required only three CFC infusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studies aiming to understand the effects of storage on whole blood (WB) clotting often rely on characterizing coagulation under static conditions. Minimal work has explored the effects of physiologic shear on clot formation and thrombolysis utilizing fractionated and reconstituted whole blood (rWB) products. WB was fractionated into platelet‐free plasma, packed red blood cells, and platelets storing each component under its ideal conditions—including platelet cryopreservation. Recombination at their native ratios was accomplished over 91 days of storage and clotting/thrombolysis was analyzed utilizing thromboelastography and Chandler loop. rWB preserved clot strength through 91 days with minimal deviation from baseline, in contrast to WB stored at 4°C which experienced a significant decline by storage Day‐42. Clot formation under shear for both rWB and WB led to increased clot mass through storage. No significant deviation from baseline was appreciated until Day 70 of storage in rWB. Increasing degrees of thrombolysis were seen in both groups, with rWB significantly deviating from baseline at Day 70. No significant changes in overall clot architecture occurred throughout storage and recombination. This fractionation and recombination protocol serves as a method to further develop reproducible in vitro clot analogs for preclinical thrombolytic therapy screening. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The marine environment presents challenges for wound healing in cetaceans, despite their remarkable recovery abilities with minimal infections or complications. However, the molecular mechanism underlying this efficient wound healing remains underexplored. To better understand the molecular mechanisms behind wound healing in cetaceans, we investigated the evolutionary patterns of 37 wound healing‐related genes in representative mammals. We found wound healing‐related genes experience adaptive evolution in cetaceans: (1) Three extrinsic coagulation pathway‐related genes—tissue factor (F3), coagulation factor VII (F7), and coagulation factor X (F10)—are subject to positive selection in cetaceans, which might promote efficient hemostasis after injury; positive selection in transforming growth factor‐beta 2 (TGF‐β2), transforming growth factor‐beta 3 (TGF‐β3), and platelet‐derived growth factor D (PDGFD), which play immunological roles in wound healing, may help cetaceans enhance inflammatory response and tissue debridement. (2) Coagulation factor XII (F12) is the initiation factor in the intrinsic coagulation pathway. It had a premature stop codon mutation and was subjected to selective stress relaxation in cetaceans, suggesting that the early termination of F12 may help cetaceans avoid the risk of vascular blockage during diving. (3) Fibrinogen alpha chain (FGA) and FIII, which were detected to contain the specific amino acid substitutions in marine mammals, indicating similar evolutionary mechanisms might exist among marine mammals to maintain strong wound‐healing ability. Thus, our research provides further impetus to study the evolution of the wound healing system in cetaceans and other marine mammals, extending knowledge of preventing coagulation disorder and atherosclerosis in humans. This article discusses the detection of blood-borne pathogens in clotting factor concentrates from the 1970s and 1980s. The study found that concentrated coagulation factors derived from human blood donations during this time period were contaminated with viruses such as HIV-1 and hepatitis C. The authors used qPCR assays to test the clotting factor samples for various viruses and found that HCV, B19V, and HPgV-1 were the most frequently detected viruses. In this paper, the effect of the composition of a nonsolvent bath on the physicochemical properties of the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes were comprehensively investigated using the nonsolvent‐induced phase separation method. Three additives (ethanol, glycerol, or NaCl) were added to the water coagulation bath respectively to obtain different membranes. It was found that the microstructure of the membranes changed from finger‐like structure to the sponge‐like structure with the increase of additives concentration, which successfully improved the retention and mechanical properties of the membranes. In addition, the membrane surface became smoother and more hydrophilic. The membrane fabricated in 30 wt% glycerol bath exhibited outstanding comprehensive properties of retention and anti‐fouling, with a water flux of 243.5 L/(m2 h), a bovine serum albumin rejection of more than 90%, and a flux recovery rate of 97%. From mechanism analysis, the addition of ethanol, glycerol, or NaCl to the coagulation bath altered the thermodynamic stability of the polymer system, and slowed down the rate of solvent and nonsolvent diffusion from a kinetic perspective. Summary: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)‐T‐cell therapy has demonstrated considerable efficacy and safety in the treatment of patients with relapsed/refractory haematological malignancies. Owing to significant advances, CAR‐T‐cell therapeutic modality has undergone substantial shifts in its clinical application. Coagulation abnormalities, which are prevalent complications in CAR‐T‐cell therapy, can range in severity from simple abnormalities in coagulation parameters to serious haemorrhage or disseminated intravascular coagulation associated with life‐threatening multiorgan dysfunction. Nonetheless, there is a lack of a comprehensive overview concerning the coagulation abnormalities associated with CAR‐T‐cell therapy. With an aim to attract heightened clinical focus and to enhance the safety of CAR‐T‐cell therapy, this review presents the characteristics of the coagulation abnormalities associated with CAR‐T‐cell therapy, including clinical manifestations, coagulation parameters, pathogenesis, risk factors and their influence on treatment efficacy in patients receiving CAR‐T‐cell infusion. Background and Purpose: More evidence supports the benefits of batroxobin combined with anticoagulation in correcting acute cerebral venous thrombosis (CVT). The dynamic fluctuations of peripheral blood platelets, fibrinolysis, and coagulation biomarkers during this therapy were analyzed. Methods: We investigated batroxobin's effects on the antithrombotic system under two regimens. The pretreatment group included patients on anticoagulants for at least 1 week before starting batroxobin. The simultaneous treatment group began both treatments upon admission. The control group received only anticoagulation. Batroxobin was given on alternate days at doses of 10BU, 5BU, and 5BU, totaling three doses. Anticoagulation was continuous. Baseline data were T0; the next day after each batroxobin dose was T1, T2, and T3. Data from these four time points was analyzed. Results: The time‐point paired sample T‐test results of the pretreatment group [n = 60; mean age (SD), 43.3(16.5); 38 (63.35%) women] showed that batroxobin significantly inhibited ADP‐induced platelet aggregation rate (T1–T0: p = 0.015; T2–T0: p = 0.025; T3–T0: p = 0.013), decreased fibrinogen level (T1–T0: p < 0.001; T2–T0: p < 0.001; T3–T0: p < 0.001), and increased D‐dimer (T1–T0:p < 0.001; T2–T0: p < 0.001; T3–T0: p < 0.001), TT (T1–T0:p = 0.046; T2–T0: p = 0.003; T3–T0: p < 0.001), and APTT (T1–T0:p = 0.021; T2–T0: p = 0.012; T3–T0: p = 0.026). Compared to the control group, the simultaneous treatment group showed significantly higher TT (T2: p = 0.002; T3: p = 0.004) and D‐dimer (T1: p < 0.001; T2: p < 0.001; T3: p < 0.001) values, while fibrinogen (T2: p < 0.001; T3: p < 0.001) levels were significantly lower. Using batroxobin can alleviate the amplitude of changes in coagulation indicators other than TT caused by anticoagulants. The above conclusions are consistent with the results of repeated measurement data analysis. Conclusions: Batroxobin can significantly inhibit ADP‐induced platelet aggregation rate, increase D‐dimer, decrease fibrinogen, and prolong TT and APTT in the presence of anticoagulant agents. Using batroxobin can reduce the amplitude of changes in coagulation indicators caused by anticoagulants. Background: Understanding the recovery of post‐COVID‐19 organ dysfunction is essential. We evaluated coagulation 6 months post‐COVID‐19, examining its recovery and association with lung function. Methods: Patients treated for COVID‐19 at intensive care units between 3/2020 and 1/2021 were analyzed for complete blood count (CBC) and coagulation biomarkers (prothrombin time activity (%) (PT%), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), fibrinogen, coagulation factor VIII (FVIII), antithrombin (AT), and D‐dimer) during the 6 months post‐hospitalization. Results were compared with acute phase values and correlated with pulmonary function tests (PFT), including forced vital capacity (FVC) and hemoglobin‐corrected diffusing capacity percentage of predicted (DLCOc%), recorded 6 months post‐hospitalization. We examined the association between coagulation biomarkers and DLCOc% using linear regression with age, sex, and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) duration, and FVIII (correlated with DLCOc%) as covariates. Results: Most CBCs and coagulation biomarkers had median values within the normal range. However, only 21% (15/70) of patients achieved full normalization of all biomarkers. Compared to acute COVID‐19, hemoglobin, PT%, and AT increased, while leukocytes, fibrinogen, FVIII, and D‐dimer decreased. Despite decreased levels, FVIII remained elevated in 46% (31/68), leukocytes in 26% (18/70), and D‐dimer in 27% (18/67) at 6 months. A weak negative correlation (r = −0.37, p =.036) was found between DLCOc% and FVIII. Multivariable analysis revealed a weak, independent association between DLCOc% and FVIII. Excluding patients with anticoagulation therapy, FVIII no longer correlated with DLCOc%, while AT showed a moderate correlation with DLCOc%. Conclusion: Only a few patients had normal CBC and coagulation biomarker values 6 months after critical COVID‐19. It is accepted that the contact activation complex of the intrinsic pathway of blood coagulation cascade produces active enzymes that lead to plasma coagulation following biomaterial contact. In this study, FXII was activated through contact with hydrophilic glass beads and hydrophobic octadecyltrichlorosilane-modified glass beads from neat buffer solutions. These FXII contact activation products generated from material interaction were found to suppress the procoagulant activity of exogenous αFXIIa, and this inhibition was dependent on surface wettability and the concentration of exogenous αFXIIa. Higher relative inhibition rates were generally observed at low concentrations of αFXIIa (1–2 μg/mL) while both hydrophobic and hydrophilic materials showed similar inhibition levels (~39%) at high concentrations of αFXIIa (20 μg/mL). The presence of prekallikrein in the activation system increased the amount of FXIIa produced during FXII contact activation, and also suppressed the apparent levels of inhibitors on hydrophilic surfaces, while having no effect on apparent levels of inhibitors on hydrophobic surface. The combination of FXII contact activation products and activator surfaces was found to dramatically increase inhibition of αFXIIa activity compared to the activation products alone, regardless of activator surface wettability and the presence of prekallikrein. This finding of inhibitors in the suite of proteins generated by contact activation provides additional knowledge into the complex series of interactions that occur when plasma comes into contact with material surfaces. Introduction: Peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) collection via apheresis requires the administration of granulocyte colony‐stimulating factor (filgrastim) to stem cell donors. Several reports have shown that filgrastim administration and apheresis procedure induce a hypercoagulable state across PBSC collection, which might predispose certain donors to thrombotic complications. Methods: We evaluated the hemostatic functions of healthy allogeneic stem cell donors by rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM). Blood samples from healthy donors (n = 30) were collected at defined time points: before filgrastim (baseline), on the day of apheresis before and after the procedure, and 1 week after apheresis. Results: The results indicated that hemostatic changes are temporary since all parameters in both EXTEM and INTEM assays are restored to their initial values 1 week after the apheresis. Conclusion: We concluded that stem cell apheresis does not induce a hypercoagulable state in healthy donors. This is the first study evaluating the hemostatic functions of stem cell donors by ROTEM. Globally, traumatic injury is a leading cause of suffering and death. The ability to curtail damage and ensure survival after major injury requires a time‐sensitive response balancing organ perfusion, blood loss, and portability, underscoring the need for novel therapies for the prehospital environment. Currently, there are few options available for damage control resuscitation (DCR) of trauma victims. We hypothesize that synthetic polymers, which are tunable, portable, and stable under austere conditions, can be developed as effective injectable therapies for trauma medicine. In this work, we design injectable polymers for use as low volume resuscitants (LVRs). Using RAFT polymerization, we evaluate the effect of polymer size, architecture, and chemical composition upon both blood coagulation and resuscitation in a rat hemorrhagic shock model. Our therapy is evaluated against a clinically used colloid resuscitant, Hextend. We demonstrate that a radiant star poly(glycerol monomethacrylate) polymer did not interfere with coagulation while successfully correcting metabolic deficit and resuscitating animals from hemorrhagic shock to the desired mean arterial pressure range for DCR – correcting a 60 % total blood volume (TBV) loss when given at only 10 % TBV. Currently, the application of natural materials is a good alternative to prevent secondary damage to humans and the environment. Therefore, in recent years, much attention has been paid to the use of these degradable and environmentally friendly materials to reduce toxicity and treatment costs. As a natural material, starch offers advantages of low cost, flexible modification, abundant presence of hydroxyl functional groups, and eco‐friendly. These configurations make it to a suitable material for remediation purposes, as it has received a great attention for removal of pollutants from water and wastewater, including but not limited to the heavy metals, pharmaceutical, dyes, and even inorganic contaminants. This work, therefore, aims to systematically evaluate starch‐based materials applications in remediation of water and wastewater media using the appropriate search terms from international databases including PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar, and through PRISMA checklist. For this, the publications from 1973 to 2021 are searched. In the initial search, 980 articles are found of which 49 articles are included in the study. Then, the performance of the starch‐based materials for every single study as the pollutant(s) involved is summarized and discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of such application are extracted and a perspective is presented accordingly. This comprehensive review shows that the starch‐based derivatives' can be potential options in water and wastewater treatment purposes, especially those modified. Background: Newer generation viscoelastic tests, TEG6s, offer point‐of‐care hemostatic therapy in adult patients. However, their efficacy in estimating fibrinogen levels in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac surgery is not well established. Aims: This study evaluates TEG6s for estimating fibrinogen levels in pediatric cardiac surgery patients and its predictive capability for post‐bypass hypofibrinogenemia. Methods: A single‐center, retrospective study on pediatric patients (under 18 years) who underwent cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass from August 2020 and November 2022. Blood samples for estimated whole blood functional fibrinogen level via TEG6s (Haemonetics Inc.) and concurrent laboratory‐measured plasma fibrinogen via von Clauss assay were collected at pre‐ and post‐cardiopulmonary bypass. Results: Paired data for TEG6s estimated functional fibrinogen levels and plasma fibrinogen were analyzed for 432 pediatric patients pre‐bypass. It was observed that functional fibrinogen consistently overestimated plasma fibrinogen across all age groups with a mean difference of 138 mg/dL (95% confidence interval [CI]: 128–149 mg/dL). This positive bias in the pre‐bypass data was confirmed by Bland–Altman analysis. Post‐bypass, functional fibrinogen estimates were comparable to plasma fibrinogen in all patient groups with a mean difference of −6 mg/dL (95% CI: −20–8 mg/dL) except for neonates, where functional fibrinogen levels underestimated plasma fibrinogen with a mean difference of −38 mg/dL (95% CI: −64 to −12 mg/dL). The predictive accuracy of functional fibrinogen for detecting post‐bypass hypofibrinogenemia (plasma fibrinogen ≤250 mg/dL) demonstrated overall fair accuracy in all patients, indicated by an area under the curve of 0.73 (95% CI: 0.65–0.80) and good accuracy among infants, with an area under the curve of 0.80 (95% CI: 0.70–0.90). Similar performance was observed in predicting critical post‐bypass hypofibrinogenemia (plasma fibrinogen ≤200 mg/dL). Based on these analyses, optimal cutoffs for predicting post‐bypass hypofibrinogenemia were established as a functional fibrinogen level ≤270 mg/dL and MAFF ≤15 mm. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that whole blood functional fibrinogen, as estimated by TEG6s, tends to overestimate baseline plasma fibrinogen levels in pediatric age groups but aligns more accurately post‐cardiopulmonary bypass, particularly in neonates and infants, suggesting its potential as a point‐of‐care tool in pediatric cardiac surgery. However, the variability in TEG6s performance before and after bypass highlights the need for careful interpretation of its results in clinical decision‐making. Background: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) modulate inflammation, coagulation and vascular homeostasis in decompensated cirrhosis. Aim: To characterize the profile of plasmatic EVs in patients with decompensated cirrhosis and bacterial infections and evaluate the association between EVs and the development of hemostatic complications. Methods: We measured the levels of EVs using high-sensitivity flow cytometry and phospholipid-dependent clotting time (PPL) in a prospective cohort of hospitalized patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis with versus without bacterial infections. A separate cohort of patients with bacterial infections without cirrhosis was also enrolled. We measured endothelium-, tissue factor (TF)-bearing, platelet- and leukocyte-derived EVs. In patients with infections, EVs were reassessed upon resolution of infection. Bleeding and thrombotic complications were recorded during 1-year follow-up. Results: Eighty patients with decompensated cirrhosis were recruited (40 each with and without bacterial infections). Electron microscopy confirmed the presence of plasma EVs. Despite no difference in total EVs and PPL, patients with cirrhosis and infection had significantly higher TF+ EVs, P-Selectin+ EVs (activated platelet-derived), CD14+ EVs (monocyte/macrophages derived) and CD14+ TF+ EVs versus those with cirrhosis without infection. Upon infection resolution, levels of these EVs returned to those without infection. Patients with infections showed a significant association between reduced P-Selectin+ EVs and bleeding complications (HR 8.0 [95%CI 1.3-48.1]), whereas high levels of leukocyte-derived EVs (CD45+) and CD14+ EVs were significantly associated with thrombotic complications (HR 16.4 [95%CI 1.7-160] and 10.9 [95%CI 1.13-106], respectively). Results were confirmed in a validation cohort. Conclusion: Bacterial infections are associated with particular alterations of plasma EVs profile in decompensated cirrhosis. Bacterial infections trigger the release of EVs originating from various cell types, which may tip the precarious hemostatic balance of patients with acutely decompensated cirrhosis towards hyper- or hypocoagulability. Introduction: Inflammatory responses and coagulation disorders are a relevant challenge for successful cardiac xenotransplantation on its way to the clinic. To cope with this, an effective and clinically practicable anti‐inflammatory and anti‐coagulatory regimen is needed. The inflammatory and coagulatory response can be reduced by genetic engineering of the organ‐source pigs. Furthermore, there are several therapeutic strategies to prevent or reduce inflammatory responses and coagulation disorders following xenotransplantation. However, it is still unclear, which combination of drugs should be used in the clinical setting. To elucidate this, we present data from pig‐to‐baboon orthotopic cardiac xenotransplantation experiments using a combination of several anti‐inflammatory drugs. Methods: Genetically modified piglets (GGTA1‐KO, hCD46/hTBM transgenic) were used for orthotopic cardiac xenotransplantation into captive‐bred baboons (n = 14). All animals received an anti‐inflammatory drug therapy including a C1 esterase inhibitor, an IL‐6 receptor antagonist, a TNF‐α inhibitor, and an IL‐1 receptor antagonist. As an additive medication, acetylsalicylic acid and unfractionated heparin were administered. The immunosuppressive regimen was based on CD40/CD40L co‐stimulation blockade. During the experiments, leukocyte counts, levels of C‐reactive protein (CRP) as well as systemic cytokine and chemokine levels and coagulation parameters were assessed at multiple timepoints. Four animals were excluded from further data analyses due to porcine cytomegalovirus/porcine roseolovirus (PCMV/PRV) infections (n = 2) or technical failures (n = 2). Results: Leukocyte counts showed a relevant perioperative decrease, CRP levels an increase. In the postoperative period, leukocyte counts remained consistently within normal ranges, CRP levels showed three further peaks after about 35, 50, and 80 postoperative days. Analyses of cytokines and chemokines revealed different patterns. Some cytokines, like IL‐8, increased about 2‐fold in the perioperative period, but then decreased to levels comparable to the preoperative values or even lower. Other cytokines, such as IL‐12/IL‐23, decreased in the perioperative period and stayed at these levels. Besides perioperative decreases, there were no relevant alterations observed in coagulation parameters. In summary, all parameters showed an unremarkable course with regard to inflammatory responses and coagulation disorders following cardiac xenotransplantation and thus showed the effectiveness of our approach. Conclusion: Our preclinical experience with the anti‐inflammatory drug therapy proved that controlling of inflammation and coagulation disorders in xenotransplantation is possible and well‐practicable under the condition that transmission of pathogens, especially of PCMV/PRV to the recipient is prevented because PCMV/PRV also induces inflammation and coagulation disorders. Acid coagulation is the most traditional latex coagulation technology, but this coagulation process leads to delayed vulcanization, corrosiveness, and environmental pollution. Different coagulation processes significantly impact the raw rubber network structure, leading to differences in the properties of both raw rubber and rubber vulcanizates. Raw rubber was prepared by three acid‐free coagulation processes: freeze, microwave, and flash drying. The network density, molecular chain flexibility, molecular weight, processing fluidity, and plasticity retention of the raw rubber were characterized, and the vulcanization characteristics, viscoelasticity, mechanical properties, and dynamic mechanical properties of the cured rubber composites were investigated. Raw rubbers prepared by microwave drying and flash drying had higher crosslink density, more flexible molecular chains, larger molecular weight, and wider molecular weight distribution, thereby increasing the crosslink density of rubber vulcanizates. The crosslink density of the raw rubber prepared by microwave drying versus the acid coagulated raw rubber increased by 51% to 105.71 mol/m3, the tensile strength increased by 16% to reach 28.12 MPa, and the elastic modulus and rolling resistance under dynamic stress increased. This paper provides a new idea for analyzing the relationship between the raw rubber network structure and the properties of vulcanized rubber. Enzymatically modified starch offers a potential biodegradable coagulating agent. However, most of the research in this area mainly focuses on corn starch, leaving cassava starch underexplored. This study investigates the coagulation efficacy of cassava starch modified by α‐amylase (AA), glucoamylase (GA), and their combination. The results show that the dual‐enzyme modified starch demonstrates excellent coagulation performance, compared to the single‐enzyme counterparts as well as the unmodified native starch. It reduces the coagulation time of the whole blood by 3.47 min and exhibits a 90.1% increase in liquid absorption rate. The average micrometer‐level pore size and specific surface area (SBET) also increase by 1.72 µm and 9.37 m2 g−1, respectively. Furthermore, the coagulation time of enzyme‐modified starch displays a negative correlation with liquid absorption rate, average micrometer‐level pore size, and SBET. This suggests that larger pores efficiently guided blood into starch micropores, while higher SBET enhances the coagulation factor aggregation. Additionally, DSC results indicate a synergistic effect of AA and GA on cassava starch. Background: Enhanced platelet responses have been demonstrated in heartworm-infected (HWI) dogs; however, the cause and clinical implications of altered platelet function have not been fully elucidated. Objective: This study evaluated platelet function in HWI dogs. Methods: Anticoagulated whole blood collected from eight HWI and eight uninfected dogs was evaluated using turbidometric platelet aggregometry, a platelet function analyzer (PFA-100), a total thrombus analysis system (T-TAS), tissue factor-activated and tissue plasminogen activator modified thromboelastography (TF- and tPA-TEG), CBC, von Willebrand Factor activity, and fibrinogen concentrations. Platelet activation state and the presence of reticulated platelets were assessed via flow cytometric expression of P-selection (CD-62P) and thiazole orange staining. Results: Platelet aggregation responses to adenosine diphosphate (ADP, 10 μM) or collagen (20 μg/mL), PFA-100 closure times, and T-TAS occlusion times did not differ between groups. TEG values TF-R, tPA-R, TF-K, and TF-LY60 were decreased (P= .025, P= .047, P = .038, P = .025) and TF-MA, tPA-MA, TF-G, tPA-G and TF-alpha angle were increased (P < .04) in HWI dogs. HWI dogs had higher fibrinogen concentrations (465.6 ± 161 mg/dL vs 284.5 ± 38 mg/dL, P = .008) and eosinophil counts (0.686 ± 0.27 × 10³/μL vs 0.267 ± 0.20 × 10³/μL, P = .003). There was no difference in hematocrit, activation state, or percent of reticulated platelets. Non-activated reticulated platelets exhibited higher CD62P expression compared with mature platelets. Conclusions: Chronic canine heartworm disease was accompanied by hypercoagulability, hyperfibrinogenemia, and decreased fibrinolysis. SARS‐CoV‐2 infection has been associated with the increased incidence of acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN), an infrequent ocular disorder. However, the precise mechanisms underpinning AMN in the context of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection (AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2) remain elusive. In this case–control study, 14 patients diagnosed with AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2 between 2022/12 and 2023/3 were enrolled and compared with 14 SARS‐CoV‐2‐infected individuals without AMN, who served as controls (SARS‐CoV‐2‐no AMN). Metabolomic profiling using ultrahigh‐performance liquid chromatography‐online electrospray mass spectrometry revealed significant alterations in serum metabolites in AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2 patients. Coagulation abnormalities were observed in AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2 patients, and their relationship with metabolic disorders was studied. Finally, a predictive model for AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2 was established. Seventy‐six upregulated and 42 downregulated metabolites were identified in AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2 cases. Notably, arginine metabolism within the urea cycle was significantly altered, evidenced by variations in ornithine, citrulline, l‐proline, and ADAM levels, correlating with abnormal coagulation markers like platelet crit, fibrinogen degradation product, and fibrinogen. Additionally, increased arginase 1 (AGR1) activity within the urea cycle and reduced nitric oxide synthase activity were observed in AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2. The integration of urea cycle metabolite levels with coagulation parameters yielded a robust discriminatory model for AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2, as evidenced by an area under the curve of 0.96. The findings of the present study enhance our comprehension of the underlying metabolic mechanisms associated with AMN‐SARS‐CoV‐2 and offer potential diagnostic markers for this uncommon ocular disorder within the context of SARS‐CoV‐2 infection. Motivated by important applications in materials science and biology, we consider a nonstationary coagulation equation with influx and outflux of particles (cargo). An exact analytical solution to this integrodifferential equation is found in a parametric form. This solution behaves as a decaying exponent with respect to the particle volume (fluorescence intensity in the case of coagulation of endosomes). Fibers composed solely of chitin nanowhiskers (ChNWs) with extreme uniaxial orientation can be successfully wet‐spun into coagulation baths containing 70% ethanol and various types of electrolytes (LiCl, HCl, NaCl, and MgSO4) with ionic strengths (J) of 0.075–0.3. The obtained fibers exhibited high ChNW orientation with degrees of orientation (S) ranging from 0.77 to 0.96. Fibers produced using NaCl‐containing coagulation baths contained residual NaCl crystals that were subsequently removed by rinsing. In contrast, LiCl and MgSO4, which originated from the corresponding baths and similarly remained within the fibers, did not crystallize due to hygroscopic deliquescence and the adaptation of SO42− ions for potential ionic crosslinking, respectively. Spinning with LiCl‐containing baths yielded fibers with maximum Young's modulus, stress at break, and strain at break of 7.9 ± 0.6 GPa, 58.8 MPa, and 1.13%, respectively. These mechanical properties of the unwashed fibers improved with J, while washing out the residual electrolytes and subsequent drying led to a decrease in the Young's modulus and an increase in the stress at break and strain at break. Background: Hyperthyroidism in humans is associated with a hypercoagulable state and an increased risk of thromboembolism. Objective: To evaluate hemostatic variables in hyperthyroid and euthyroid cats with the hypothesis that hyperthyroid cats will have evidence of altered hemostasis consistent with a potential hypercoagulable state. Animals: Client‐owned hyperthyroid (n = 16) and euthyroid (n = 15) cats over 8 years of age. Methods: Prospective observational study. Hyperthyroid and euthyroid cats were enrolled. Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM), whole‐blood platelet impedance aggregometry (WBPIA) and a point‐of‐care viscoelastic coagulation monitor (VCM‐Vet) were performed immediately after minimally traumatic venipuncture under sedation. Results: Hyperthyroid cats had significantly higher values for variables as assessed by VCM‐Vet: A10 (34 [17‐47] vs 25 [17‐38], P =.003); A20 (39.5 [23‐55] vs 31 [21‐45], P =.003); and MCF (41 [24‐58] vs 35 [22‐49], P =.03). Hyperthyroid cats had significantly different values versus the euthyroid cohort as assessed by different ROTEM channels: increased A10, INTEM (61.5 [39‐75] vs 54 [23‐66], P =.007) and FIBTEM (18 [10‐35] vs 13 [2‐27], P =.01); increased A20, INTEM (68 [45‐78] vs 61 [30‐70], P =.006) and FIBTEM (17 [10‐34] vs 11 [2‐25], P =.002); increased MCF, EXTEM (72 [65‐81] vs 69 [34‐78], P =.04), INTEM (70 [45‐85] vs 62 [35‐71], P =.01) and FIBTEM (18 [13‐37] vs 14 [3‐27], P =.02); increased alpha angle, EXTEM (80 [68‐85] vs 76 [41‐84], P =.01); shortened CT, EXTEM (52.5 [29‐73] vs 60 [52‐92], P =.003) and FIBTEM (52.5 [16‐75] vs 65 [53‐165], P =.001); and decreased ML, FIBTEM (20 [1‐36] vs 33 [19‐59], P <.001). No significant differences were found with WBPIA. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: The hyperthyroid cats in this study had evidence of altered hemostasis as assessed by 2 viscoelastic methodologies, and characterized by increased clot amplitude, firmness, and faster coagulation times vs euthyroid controls. Background: Thromboelastometry (TEM) provides a comprehensive overview of the entire coagulation process and has not been evaluated in heatstroke‐induced coagulopathies in dogs. Objectives: To determine the diagnostic and prognostic utility of TEM in dogs with heatstroke. Animals: Forty‐two client‐owned dogs with heatstroke. Methods: Prospective observational study. Blood samples for intrinsic and extrinsic TEM (INTEM and EXTEM, respectively) were collected at presentation and every 12 to 24 hours for 48 hours. Coagulation phenotype (hypo‐, normo‐, or hypercoagulable) was defined based on TEM area under the 1st derivative curve (AUC). Results: Case fatality rate was 31%. Median TEM variables associated with death (P <.05 for all) included longer INTEM clotting time, lower AUC at presentation and at 12 to 24 hours postpresentation (PP), lower INTEM alpha angle, maximum clot firmness, and maximum lysis (ML) at 12 to 24 hours PP, and lower EXTEM ML at 12 to 24 hours PP. Most dogs were normo‐coagulable on presentation (66% and 63% on EXTEM and INTEM, respectively), but hypo‐coagulable 12 to 24 PP (63% for both EXTEM and INTEM). A hypo‐coagulable INTEM phenotype was more frequent at presentation and 12 to 24 PP among nonsurvivors compared to survivors (55% vs 15% and 100% vs 50%, P =.045 and.026, respectively). AKI was more frequent (P =.015) in dogs with hypo‐coagulable INTEM tracings at 12 to 24 hours. Disseminated intravascular coagulation was more frequent (P <.05) in dogs with a hypo‐coagulable INTEM phenotype and in nonsurvivors at all timepoints. Introduction: Bivalirudin is recommended as an alternative to heparin in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass. Although it has been used in infants and children for this indication, there is a paucity of data on the pharmacologic effects of bivalirudin in neonates. Given the immaturity of the hemostatic system in neonates, we hypothesized that coagulation responses to bivalirudin in this population would be different than in adults. Methods: Blood samples were drawn from placenta‐cord units and from healthy adult donors. The study was carried out in two steps. First, bivalirudin was added to cord and adult blood samples at concentrations of 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 μg/mL. Activated clotting time and thromboelastographic variables were recorded. Next, we used a Chandler loop system to assess the efficacy of bivalirudin in a simple model of cardiopulmonary bypass. The loops were primed with cord or adult blood and were run until thrombus was detected. Plasma bivalirudin concentrations were measured at 1, 15, 30, 45, 60, and 75 min after initiating rotation of the loops using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. Results: Bivalirudin elicited a dose‐dependent prolongation inhibition of coagulation in both cord and adult blood samples with greater potency in cord blood in comparison to adult blood (activated clotting time: 627 ± 50 vs. 452 ± 22 s at 15 μg/mL bivalirudin, p <.0001). This relative potency was also demonstrated in the Chandler loop system, but interestingly, cord blood appeared to inactivate bivalirudin more rapidly than adult blood with earlier clotting in loops containing cord blood. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that bivalirudin has greater potency in cord blood in vitro than in adult blood. Plasma degradation appears to proceed more rapidly in cord blood than in adults. Background: Emicizumab (Emi) is used as haemostatic prophylaxis for patients with haemophilia A (PwHA). Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a condition characterized by persistent systemic activation of coagulation, but there is yet no information on coagulation and fibrinolysis potentials in Emi‐treated PwHA with DIC. Aim: To examine the effect of Emi on coagulation and fibrinolysis potentials in HA‐model DIC plasmas. Methods: Plasma from a patient with sepsis‐DIC (seven patients) was treated with anti‐factor (F)VIII monoclonal antibody (HA‐model DIC plasma) and incubated with Emi (50 µg/mL). The plasma was then assessed using clot‐fibrinolysis waveform analysis (CFWA). Coagulation and fibrinolysis parameters were expressed as ratios relative to normal plasma (|min1|‐ratio and |FL‐min1|‐ratio, respectively). Patients and results: In case 1, coagulant potential was slightly high and fibrinolytic potential was extremely low, presenting a coagulant‐dominant state (|min1|‐ratio/|FL‐min1|‐ratio: 1.1/.38). In cases 2–5, fibrinolytic potential was not suppressed, but there were marked hypercoagulant potentials, indicating relative coagulant‐dominant states. In case 6, coagulant and fibrinolytic potentials were increased but well balanced (|min1|‐ratio/|FL‐min1|‐ratio: 1.38/1.28). In case 7, both potentials were severely deteriorated in not only CFWA but also the thrombin/plasmin generation assay. The addition of Emi into the HA‐model DIC plasmas increased |min1|‐ratio values in all cases, but the coagulant potentials did not exceed the initial ones (DIC plasma before treatment with anti‐FVIII antibody). Conclusions: The presence of Emi in the HA‐model DIC plasma improved coagulation potentials, but did not increase coagulation potentials beyond those of DIC plasma in non‐HA states. Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of the point‐of‐care viscoelastic coagulation monitor (VCM) in Amazon parrots (Amazona spp.) and describe the parameters with fresh whole‐blood samples in healthy Amazon parrots. Design: A total of 18 Amazon parrots were enrolled. Physical examinations, a CBC, and a biochemistry profile, including bile acids, were performed on all parrots. VCM tracings were obtained at the time of venipuncture for baseline laboratory work. Measurements and Main Results: The median clot time was 2102 seconds (range: 38.6–3599 s), median clot formation time was 929 seconds (range: 21.4–1711 s), median alpha angle was 20 (range: 6–67), and the median maximum clot formation was 8.5 (range: 0–36). The median lysis index at 30 minutes (LI30) was 100 (range: 98–100), and the median lysis index at 45 minutes (LI45) was 100 (range: 90–100). Of 18 samples, alpha angles were not reported in 7 samples, LI30 was not reported in 10 samples, and LI45 was not reported in 12 samples. Of the qualitative curves, 6 reflected normal mammalian curves, and the remainder were consistent with a hypocoaguable state. Conclusions: The results were markedly variable, with the majority of VCM tracings being hypocoagulable in comparison with reference intervals established for dogs and cats. Using these protocols, the VCM is not reliable in Amazon parrots. Future areas of investigation include altering the temperature during sample analysis, the use of activators, or an exchange of clotting reagents for an extrinsic pathway activator, which may contribute to the success of this device in avian species. Additive manufacturing (AM) has significant potential to create sustainable, lightweight, multifunctional material systems in a single step. Fused filament fabrication (FFF) is the most commonly used AM technology, which involves the deposition of thermoplastic polymer filament layers. Phase inversion is one method that can be used to produce filaments for FFF. In this process, a polymer solution is prepared and then extruded into a coagulation bath. By applying a unidirectional casting direction to the composite solution, the orientation of the reinforcements can be optimized to achieve superior mechanical performance. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the potential of the phase inversion technique, combined with the controlled alignment of reinforcements within a polymeric matrix, to improve the mechanical properties of the resulting composite films. The global existence of mass‐conserving weak solutions to the Safronov–Dubovskiǐ coagulation equation is shown for the coagulation kernels satisfying at most linear growth for large sizes. In contrast to previous works, the proof mainly relies on the de la Vallée–Poussin theorem, which only requires the finiteness of the first moment of the initial condition. By showing the necessary regularity of solutions, it is shown that the weak solutions constructed herein are indeed classical solutions. Under additional restrictions on the initial data, the uniqueness of solutions is also shown. The formation of a proper fibrin clot is essential during blood coagulation, as abnormal clots can predispose individuals to bleeding or thrombosis. Despite these concerns, there is currently limited understanding of the potential adverse effects of engineered nanomaterials on fibrin clot formation. This is surprising, given that fibrinogen is highly concentrated in plasma and has a large surface area, making it prone to unintended interactions with nanomaterials. In this study, the impact of ultrasmall gold nanoparticles (usGNPs) on fibrin clot formation is investigated. UsGNPs have gained significant interest in biomedical applications due to their unique physicochemical properties and favorable behavior in complex biofluids. It is found that the usGNPs interacted with fibrinogen, delayed the onset of clot formation, and became physically trapped within the forming fibrin matrix. Confocal microscopy showed that the usGNPs disrupted the normal architecture of the fibrin clot, resulting in a less dense network structure. This disruption led to larger clot pore sizes and increased clot permeability to liquid. Considering the potential health risks associated with abnormal clot formation, a detailed examination of the clot formation process should be included in the standard safety assessment of usGNPs and other nanomedicines. While drinking water treatment plants (DWTPs) are not considered a source of per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), PFAS concentrate in treatment residuals relative to their source water concentrations. Regulatory actions considered for PFAS‐impacted residuals could affect the cost and viability of conventional residual management practices. This study estimated the annual quantity of residuals generated in the United States and presents a framework for understanding how PFAS may concentrate in these residual streams. Findings of this work indicate that PFAS may substantially impact DWTP residuals management, especially coagulation and softening solids, at concentration factors greater than 100 and spent adsorbents at PFAS concentration factors greater than 10,000. If potential regulatory actions were to apply to coagulation and softening residuals, those regulations must consider impacts on disposal of more than 420,000,000 wet tons of at‐risk DWTP residuals which are generated annually. The treatment of dye laden wastewater (DLW) was investigated using alum, CA${C}_A$ and Luffa cylindrica seed extract, CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$. Cibacron green dye and distilled water were used to simulate the DLW in the laboratory. The optimum conditions for the removal of color and chemical oxygen demand (COD) from DLW was determined using both regular and response surface methodology, RSM‐Jar tests with coagulant dosage, DLW pH, stirring time, and temperature as the independent variables. Instrumental characterization of the coagulant and produced sludge were studied. Individual effect using regular Jar test, CA${C}_A$ and CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$ had best color removal efficiency of 98.4% (2 g/L, pH 8, 30 min and 55°C), and 97.7% (5 g/L, pH 2, 20 min and 55°C), respectively. Also, for COD removal efficiency, CA${C}_A$ and CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$ had 85.6% (2 g/L, pH 10 and 30 min), and 88.1% (4 g/L, pH 4 and 30 min), respectively. Applying RSM‐Jar test, 99.6% and 88.7% color and COD removal efficiency were achieved with 4 g/L CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$, 0.25 g/L CA${C}_A$, pH 8, and 40°C and 5 g/L CLCSE${C}_{LCSE}$, 0.40 g/L CA${C}_A$, pH 6, and 40°C, respectively. The results indicated that the combination of both coagulants (CA+LCSE${C}_{A + LCSE}$) performed maximally with highly reduced alum dosage, exposing the novelty of the work. Hence, the novelty of the work is the use of minimal quantity of alum and Luffa cylindrica seed extract for effective removal color and COD from the DLW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Increased levels of extracellular vesicles (EVs) are associated with haemostatic disturbances in various clinical settings. However, their role in COVID‐19 patients is still not fully clear. In the present study we investigated EVs in plasma from patients with COVID‐19 and neurological symptoms in relation to the activation of coagulation. Methods: Nineteen COVID‐19 patients with neurological symptoms and twenty‐three aged‐matched healthy individuals were included. Global coagulation assays were performed and levels of EVs were determined by flow‐cytometry in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Results: A procoagulant state characterized by significantly increased overall coagulation‐ (OCP) and overall haemostatic potential (OHP), diminished overall fibrinolytic potential (OFP) together with a denser fibrin structure was found in patients with COVID‐19. Flow cytometry revealed elevated levels of plasma circulating EVs derived from neutrophils (MPO+) and platelets (CD61+), as well as EVs expressing phosphatidylserine (PS+) and complement component C5b‐9 (TCC+) in patients with COVID‐19 compared with controls. The concentrations of PS+, CD61+ and TCC+ EVs were positively correlated with OCP and OHP in COVID‐19 patients. Moreover, we identified CD61+, MPO+ and endothelial cell‐derived EVs, as well as EVs exposing PS and TCC in the CSF of patients suffering from neurological symptoms during COVID‐19. Conclusion: The unique finding in this study was the presence of EVs in the CSF of COVID‐19 patients with neurologic manifestations as well as higher expression of complement protein on circulating plasma EVs.
