The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has a crucial impact on the energy conversion efficiency and the performance of fuel cells, it is urgent to deliver low‐cost efficient ORR catalysts for the aim to scale up the utilization of fuel cells. In this study, three oxamidate copper(II) complexes [Cu2(trans‐L)(H2O)2(ClO4)2]·2H2O (Cuox), [Cu2(cis‐L)(bpy)(ClO4)2]·CH3OH (Cuoxbpy), and [Cu2(cis‐L)(mebpy)(ClO4)](ClO4) (Cuoxmebpy) (L = N,N–bis(2–pyridylmethyl)oxamide, bpy = 2,2′–bipyridine, and mebpy = 4,4′–dimethyl–2,2′–bipyridine) were prepared and characterized. The configuration of L varied from the trans form to the cis form as the bipyridines were introduced to the dicopper complex. The redox properties of three oxamidate copper(II) complexes and their catalytic activities for the ORR were studied in neutral aqueous solutions. The ORR onset potentials by Cuox, Cuoxbpy, and Cuoxmebpy were 0.417, 0.502, and 0.481 versus RHE, respectively. Three complexes homogeneously catalyzed the ORR to predominantly generate H2O2. A bimolecular catalytic pathway was proposed for the ORR mediated by Cuox, whereas a single‐molecular pathway was by Cuoxbpy and Cuoxmebpy. This work demonstrated that oxamidate metal complexes are promising ORR catalyst candidates provided that their electronic structures are appropriately tuned by altering the substituent on the organic ligands. Supramolecular peptide assemblies have been widely used for the development of biomedical, catalytical, and optical materials with chiral nanostructures in view of the intrinsic chirality of peptides. However, the assembly pathway and chiral transformation behavior of various peptides remain largely elusive especially for the transient assemblies under out‐of‐equilibrium conditions. Herein, the N‐fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl‐protected phenylalanine‐tyrosine dipeptide (Fmoc‐FY) was used as a peptide assembly platform, which showed that the assembly proceeds multistep evolution. The original spheres caused by liquid‐liquid phase separation (LLPS) can nucleate and elongate into the formation of right‐handed helices which were metastable and easily converted into microribbons. Interestingly, a bipyridine derivative can be introduced to effectively control the assembly pathway and induce the formation of thermodynamically stable right‐handed or left‐handed helices at different stoichiometric ratios. In addition, the chiral assembly can also be regulated by ultrasound or enzyme catalysis. This minimalistic system not only broadens the nucleation‐elongation mechanisms of protein aggregates but also promotes the controllable design and development of chiral biomaterials. Starting from 3‐oxo‐N‐(3‐pyridyl)butanamide, as key intermediate, the title compounds were synthesized in good yields. Reaction of the pyridine‐carboxamide 1 with hydrazonoyl chlorides 3a,b and with triethyl orthoformate afforded the corresponding pyrazole‐carboxamides 6a,b, and the bis‐pyridine 7, respectively. Coupling of the pyridine‐carboxamide 1 with 3‐phenylpyrazole‐5‐diazonium chloride gave the hydrazone 10 which upon heating in pyridine afforded the pyrazolo[5,1‐c]‐1,2,4‐triazine derivative 11. Reaction of the pyridine‐carboxamide 1 with arylmethylenepropanedinitrile derivatives afforded 1,3′‐bipyridines 13a–c. Structure elucidation of the newly synthesized compounds was carried out using IR, NMR spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. The extensive theoretical and experimental mechanical studies of the pyrazole derivative 6a were in accordance with its elemental analysis, FT‐IR, NMR, and MS spectral data. Moreover, computer analyses indicated that the pyridine derivatives 13a,b predominated over the pyran derivatives 14a,b as the adducts. In addition, the optimization of compounds utilized the HF/6‐31G(d) and DFT/B3LYP/6‐31G(d) basis sets. Comprehensive Summary: In recent years, the construction of stable multicomponent assembled structures on surfaces and the exploration of the assembled mechanism have become research hotspots. In this paper, the azobenzene‐carboxylic acid called (E)‐4',4"'‐(diazene‐1,2‐diyl) bis(([1,1'‐biphenyl]‐3,5‐dicarboxylic acid)) (H4DBBD) could self‐assemble into regular network structure at heptanoic acid/graphite via hydrogen bonding, and could be regulated into analogous kagomé network by coronene (COR) molecules. In addition, a series of bipyridine derivatives were further introduced to construct bi‐component systems with H4DBBD molecules, and successfully induced diversified structural transitions of H4DBBD on the graphite surface. Combined with scanning tunneling microscope (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have investigated the diversified structural transitions and analyzed the formation mechanism of the assembled systems. An efficient gold [Au]‐catalyzed one‐pot synthesis has been developed for the construction of biologically interesting mono‐ and bipyridines by utilizing the commercially available cyclic ketones and propargylamine in a sealed tube. The formation of bipyridine derivative 21 a indicates that annulation followed by retro‐Diels–Alder reaction is occurring with norbornene system. However, keto‐derivatives containing bicyclo[2.2.2]octene system 25 indicate that retro‐Diels–Alder reaction is not facile. Regioselective cobalt‐catalyzed [2+2+2] cycloaddition using fluorine‐containing diynes with nitriles was described. Cycloaddition of fluorinated diynes with nitriles under the influence of CoCl2(phen), zinc bromide, and zinc dust in dichloroethane at 80 °C for 3 h took place smoothly, exclusively affording the corresponding α‐fluoroalkylated pyridines in excellent yields. A convenient and efficient protocol has been developed for the preparation of aryl‐isothioureas based on the Chan–Lam C–S coupling reaction. The desired aryl‐isothioureas were synthesized in good yields (up to 95 %) in the presence of Cu(OAc)2·H2O as catalyst and bipyridine as ligand. A variety of functional groups on the aryl‐thiourea and arylboronic acid reagents are tolerated. Extending the conjugation of viologen by a planar thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole (TTz) framework and functionalizing the pyridinium with hydrophilic ammonium groups yielded a highly water-soluble π-conjugation extended viologen, 4,4′-(thiazolo[5,4-d]thiazole-2,5-diyl)bis(1-(3-(trimethylammonio)propyl)pyridin-1-ium) tetrachloride, [(NPr)2TTz]Cl4 , as a novel two-electron storage anolyte for aqueous organic redox flow battery (AORFB) applications. Its physical and electrochemical properties were systematically investigated. Paired with 4-trimethylammonium-TEMPO (NMe-TEMPO) as catholyte, [(NPr)2TTz]Cl4 enables a 1.44 V AORFB with a theoretical energy density of 53.7 Wh L−1. A demonstrated [(NPr)2TTz]Cl4/NMe-TEMPO AORFB delivered an energy efficiency of 70 % and 99.97 % capacity retention per cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Organic materials have recently gained considerable attention for electronic applications, improving performance and sustainability to current technologies. Commercialized metal-based systems are generally expensive, toxic and difficult to recycle, however organic materials offer promising solutions. Viologens, N, N′ di-quaternized bipyridyl salts, are a well-studied species exhibiting three reversible redox states, possessing valuable electrochromic and electron-accepting properties. These properties can be fine-tuned through synthesis by altering the nitrogen substituents and various counteranions. Currently, viologens have become of great interest as functional materials in a wide array of applications; a few to name include electrochromic devices, molecular machines, and organic batteries. This review highlights representative recent work and advances towards utilizing viologens in practical applications that currently compete with metal-based technologies. A platinum(II) bipyridyl complex bearing bis-ureidopyrimidinone (Pt-bisUPy) has been designed and its self-assembling behavior has been thoroughly investigated by 1H NMR, DOSY NMR, Ubbelohde viscometry analysis, UV/Vis, and emission spectroscopies. Pt-bisUPy underwent concentration-dependent ring-chain polymerization in apolar solvents. Hydrogen-bonding interactions play an important role during the formation of the supramolecular polymers. Hydrogen-bonded supramolecular polymers were transformed to nanoparticles in water through the miniemulsion method. These nanoparticles showed strong π-π excimeric emission. Metal-metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MMLCT) from Pt-Pt interactions was not significant in the emission spectrum. The phosphorescence of the nanoparticle persisted even under aerobic conditions. The triplet state of these phosphorescent nanomaterials were long-lived and possessed moderate emission quantum yields. Furthermore, the low toxicity of these materials promises a place for them in in vitro and in vivo bioimaging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bipyridine-based constructs 4-(pyridine-2-yl)-3 H-pyrrolo[2,3- c]quinoline (PPQ) and [6-(3 H-pyrrolo[2,3- c]quinolin-4-yl)pyridin-2-yl]methanol (PPQ-OH) and their assemblies with surfactants are evaluated as turn-on fluorescent sensors for Zn2+ ions in aqueous solution. This study strives to overcome the problem of low water solubility of the hydrophobic PPQ and PPQ-OH by using micelles. Whereas the ligands show selective sensing behavior for Zn2+ over important biological cations including Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+ in anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate and non-ionic Tween 80 micelles, no Zn2+ sensing is observed in cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide micelles. Unlike in DMF, Cd2+ interference is observed in aqueous conditions, which can be avoided either by performing the study at pH≥9 or by carrying out a time-resolved fluorescence study. Analysis of the Job plot data, the fluorescence lifetimes, and experiments on varying micellar shape and pH, confirms that the coordination volume of the resulting octahedral metal complex and formation of a five-membered chelate ring are critical factors for Cd2+ interference. The described sensing systems are capable of detecting Zn2+ ions at the micromolar level. Additionally, it is shown that PPQ and PPQ-OH can be used to detect Zn2+ in HeLa cells under physiological conditions in bioimaging studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The regioselective polymerizations of isoprene and 3-methyl-pentadiene catalyzed by a cationic iron (II) complex bearing bipyridine ligand have been computationally studied. Having achieved an agreement between calculation and experiment, it is found that the open-shell unpaired 3d-electrons localize on Fe center rather than partially distribute on the redox-active bipyridine ligand. The steric effect plays a more important role in controlling the regioselectivity in comparison with electronic factors. The deformation energy is mainly contributed by monomer and Fe-alkyl moieties rather than the bipyridine ligands themselves, although noncyclopentadienyl ancillary ligands are often deformed in most insertion transition states for selective polymerization of olefin. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. With regard to crystal engineering, building block or modular assembly methodologies have shown great success in the design and construction of metal-organic coordination polymers. The critical factor for the construction of coordination polymers is the rational choice of the organic building blocks and the metal centre. The reaction of Zn(OAc)2·2H2O (OAc is acetate) with 3-nitrobenzoic acid (HNBA) and 4,4′-bipyridine (4,4′-bipy) under hydrothermal conditions produced a two-dimensional zinc(II) supramolecular architecture, catena-poly[[bis(3-nitrobenzoato-κ2 O, O′)zinc(II)]-μ-4,4′-bipyridine-κ2 N: N′], [Zn(C7H4NO4)2(C10H8N2)] n or [Zn(NBA)2(4,4′-bipy)] n, which was characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The ZnII ions are connected by the 4,4′-bipy ligands to form a one-dimensional zigzag chain and the chains are decorated with anionic NBA ligands which interact further through aromatic π-π stacking interactions, expanding the structure into a threefold interpenetrated two-dimensional supramolecular architecture. The introduction of a simple methyl substituent on the bipyridine ligand of [Ru( tBu3tpy)(bpy)(NCCH3)]2+ ( tBu3tpy=4,4′,4′′-tri- tert-butyl-2,2′:6′,2′′-terpyridine; bpy=2,2′-bipyridine) gives rise to a highly active electrocatalyst for the reduction of CO2 to CO. The methyl group enables CO2 binding already at the one-electron reduced state of the complex to enter a previously not accessible catalytic cycle that operates at the potential of the first reduction. A series of new RuII complexes has been synthesised, with different azo ligands as additional chromophore. The dyes are all intensely colored due to MLCT and ILCT transitions in the visible region. The photophysical study of the dyes, carried out by UV/Vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, showed unusual features such as intense solvatochromism and solvent-dependent extinction coefficients. The energies of these excited states have been tuned by changing the electron density across the series of azo ligands, and this results in different contributions from each charge transfer process for the different complexes and consequently, different emission behavior. The detailed behaviour of these dyes was further studied and interpreted through electrochemical, structural and computational techniques. The dyes do not work well as sensitisers for DSSCs and this is investigated by emission spectroscopy on TiO2 and ZrO2 films, suggesting poor charge injection to TiO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The sulfonated bipyridine derivative disodium 6,6′-bis(sulfonatomethyl)-2,2′-bipyridine [Na2(smbipy)] was synthesized, and its complexation behaviour towards divalent 3d metals in aqueous solution was explored. The complexes of late 3d metals [M(smbipy)(H2O)2] ·H2O (M = Co, Ni, Zn) and [Cu(smbipy)(H2O)] are sparingly soluble in water, and their crystal structures show fourfold equatorial coordination (κ4 N, N′, O, O′) of the smbipy ligand. Ammonia-rich solutions of the NiII and CuII aqua complexes yield the decomplexation products [Ni(NH3)6](smbipy), [Ni(NH3)5(H2O)](smbipy) and [Cu(NH3)4](smbipy) ·2H2O. Buffered solutions with a reduced ammonia content lead to [Ni(smbipy)(NH3)2] and [Cu(smbipy)(NH3)3] ·2H2O, and the latter shows twofold coordination of the smbipy ligand through the nitrogen atoms only (κ2 N, N′). When nearly quantitative amounts of ammonia are applied, two closely related complexes with the core motif [(smbipy)Cu(μ-OH)2Cu] form. A new bipyridyl derivative 1 bearing rhodamine B as visible fluorophore was designed, synthesized and characterized as a fluorescent and colorimetric sensor for metal ions. Interaction with Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg+, and Hg2+ ions was followed by UV/Vis and emission spectroscopy. Upon addition of these metal ions, different colorimetric and fluorescent responses were observed. 'Off-on-off' (Cu2+, Zn2+, and Hg2+) and 'off-on' (Hg+ and Cd2+) systems were obtained. Probe 1 was explored to mimic XOR and OR logic operations for the simultaneous detection of Hg+-Cu2+ and Hg+-Zn2+ pairs, respectively. DFT calculations were also performed to gain insight into the lowest-energy gas-phase conformation of free receptor 1 as well as the atomistic details of the coordination modes of the various metal ions. A Ni complex with internal bases that contain bipyridine-derived ligands, [Ni(L)2(H2O)2](BF4)2 ([ 1](BF4)2, L=2-(2-pyridyl)-1,8-naphthyridine), and a reference complex that bears analogous bipyridine-derived ligands but without an internal base, [Ni(L′)3](BF4)2 ([ 2](BF4)2, L′=2-(2-pyridyl)quinoline), were synthesized and characterized. The electrochemical properties of these complexes were studied in CH3CN, H2O, and a mixture of EtOH/H2O. The fluorescence spectroscopic studies suggest that both dynamic and the sphere-of-action static quenching exist in the fluorescein Fl2−/[ 1]2+ and Fl2−/[ 2]2+ systems. These noble-metal-free molecular systems were studied for photocatalytic H2 generation. Under optimal conditions, the turnover number of H2 evolution reaches 3230 based on [ 1]2+, whereas [ 2]2+ displays only approximately one third of the turnover of [ 1]2+. Fluoride-azide exchange reactions of Me3SiN3 with MnF2 and MnF3 in acetonitrile resulted in the isolation of Mn(N3)2 and Mn(N3)3.CH3CN, respectively. While Mn(N3)2 forms [PPh4]2[Mn(N3)4] and (bipy)2Mn(N3)2 upon reaction with PPh4N3 and 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy), respectively, the manganese(III) azide undergoes disproportionation and forms mixtures of [PPh4]2[Mn(N3)4] and [PPh4]2[Mn(N3)6], as well as (bipy)2Mn(N3)2 and (bipy)Mn(N3)4. A key intermediate in the electroconversion of carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide, catalyzed by a manganese tris(carbonyl) complex, is characterized. Different catalytic pathways and their potential reaction mechanisms are investigated using a large range of experimental and computational techniques. Sophisticated spectroscopic methods including UV/Vis absorption and pulsed-EPR techniques (2P-ESEEM and HYSCORE) were combined together with DFT calculations to successfully identify a key intermediate in the catalytic cycle of CO2 reduction. The results directly show the formation of a metal-carboxylic acid-CO2 adduct after oxidative addition of CO2 and H+ to a Mn0 carbonyl dimer, an unexpected intermediate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on the use of bipyridine derivatives designed as chelating ligands for metal ion extraction in supercritical carbon dioxide (sc-CO2). The study involved the investigation of ligand solubilities in sc-CO2 in terms of varying temperatures and pressures as well as the correlation of data through a semiemperical model. The results show that extraction efficiency for the same metal ion has been increased with the extraction constants Kex.
