The efficacy, safety and acceptance of newly formulated triptorelin s.c. (Decapeptyl Depot, DDsc) was compared to triptorelin i.m. (DDim) in seven children with central precocious puberty (CPP) in a prospective study. Both formulations were given for 6 months consecutively. During both treatment periods suppression of basal and gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-stimulated levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone, suppression of sex steroids, arrest of the maturation of gonads and uterus, and slowing of bone maturation were achieved. The height standard deviation score for bone age increased significantly during DDsc treatment (-1.33+/-0.90 to 1.07+/-0.92, p < 0.05). The ratio bone age/chronological age decreased significantly during both treatment periods (1.25+/-0.24 to 1.20+/-0.23,p < 0.05, and 1.20+/-0.23 to 1.16+/-0.22, p < 0.05). With the injection of DDsc in the abdominal wall, a palpable, non-irritating resistance which gradually decreased in size occurred in one patient. With injection into the thigh no indurations were seen. No allergic reactions were encountered. Five of the patients considered DDsc therapy as more pleasant and described a definite decrease in fear of injections. All parents considered DDsc treatment as equal or better than DDim in respect to the suppression of their child' s puberty. It was concluded that DDsc is equipotent to DDim in the treatment of CPP. For the majority of patients DDsc was more acceptable than DDim. The thigh is recommended for the subcutaneous application of DD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The term antiandrogen usually refers to androgen receptor blockers in target tissue of which there are two types, namely types steroidal antiandrogens that include spironolactone and cyproterone acetate, and nonsteroidal antiandrogens such as flutamide, nilutamide, and casodex. Several drugs result in a net reduction of androgen expression and represent important therapeutic options in the treatment of androgen-mediated skin disease. . Female Anopheles gambiae Giles mosquitoes were observed individually in a cage within a wind tunnel and their responses to pulses of carbon dioxide recorded on video tape. The range of concentrations tested revealed an 'activation' threshold concentration of carbon dioxide in the region of 0.01% above background. At this concentration, approximately 60% of the mosquitoes took off and flew upwind. Pulses of human breath, diluted with wind tunnel air to reproduce equivalent concentrations of carbon dioxide, elicited similar levels of response and the same 'activation' threshold concentration. The semiochemicals carbon dioxide (CO2) and l-octen-3-ol (octenol) were evaluated as attractants at several release rates, alone and in combination, for the major coastal species of biting midges in Georgia: Culicoides furens, C.hollensis and C.melleus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae). The data show that CO2 is an effective attractant for the females of all three species, but each has a different response pattern. In contrast, octenol was an effective attractant only for C.furens, either alone or in combination with CO2; octenol had a repellent effect on the other two species. - Fifteen patients with advanced carcinoma of the prostate were treated with a luteinising hormone releasing hormone agonist ICI 118 630. Three of 5 patients who had failed conventional hormone therapy have had a marked alleviation of bone pain, though no objective evidence of disease regression. It has been recently reported that acute immobilization stress almost completely suppresses the luteinizing hormone (LH) release induced by naloxone, a μ-opioid antagonist, in ovariectomized estrogen-primed rats. The present study examined the possible involvement of the pineal gland in the acute immobilization-related suppression of the naloxone-induced LH release. An intraventricular (ICV) injection of 15 μg naloxone produced an abrupt increase in circulating LH concentrations in non-stressed rats. The naloxone-induced LH release was completely eliminated when tested 60 min after the end of a 30 min session of acute immobilization. The same stress conditions did not affect LH-releasing hormone (LHRH)-induced LH release, suggesting that the stress-related suppression of the naloxone-induced LH release was a suprapituitary event. In chronically-pinealectomized rats, but not in sham-pinealectomized rats, naloxone injected 60 min after the end of the stress session evoked a significant increase in serum LH concentrations. However, naloxone injected ICV during the acute immobilization did not elicit LH release in either pinealectomized or sham-operated rats. Under non-stressed conditions, the LH secretory response to naloxone was similar in pinealectomized and sham-operated animals. The same stress (30 min immobilization) significantly increased pineal melatonin content as well as plasma melatonin concentrations in rats bearing intact pineal glands, indicating that stress actually affected the pineal function. This study examined the effects of a television documentary about the safety of the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant in the Northwest of England upon public attitudes. In a study of 805 respondents from four districts in the Southwest of England, we assessed attitudes and beliefs both before and after the documentary about Sellafield. Results indicated a significant attitude change in a more antinuclear direction. Respondents who had seen or heard about the events at Sellafield tended to be more antinuclear after the broadcast. Finally, respondents living close to the existing nuclear power stations in the Southwest or England tended to see the events at Sellafield as less serious than the remaining respondents. Furthermore, this difference in perceived seriousness between respondents living near a nuclear power station and the remaining respondents was much more pronounced in ratings of the environmental risks of the local nuclear power stations in Southwest England. The article presents a study carried out in subarctic Norway to determine the effect of 1-octen-3-ol or octenol, which is used as an attractant in field trapping. The study confirmed the established role of octenol as an attractant of biting Diptera. Ocetenol functions as a host kairomone of various blood-sucking insects. The advantage of using octenol instead of, or in combination with, carbon dioxide in control or surveillance of such insects is discussed.
