Summary: Recent work in landscape archaeology has emphasized the importance of considering the experience of moving through landscapes and examining the place of burials within wider landscape contexts. This work recognizes that burial placement was often intended to create and curate experiences and meaning. While burials near roads and waterways have been discussed at length, burials near tunnels, which are an important feature of the road network of Roman central Italy, have not yet featured in discussions of the experience of Roman landscapes or the visibility of graves. This article explores these twin themes in the Phlegraean Fields west of Naples, where burials appear next to the entrances of two monumental tunnels. Objective: Although there is widespread acceptance of the concept of brain death/death by neurologic criteria (BD/DNC), there is marked variability in the use of ancillary tests worldwide. Transcranial Doppler (TCD) is a useful ancillary test for brain death confirmation because it is safe, noninvasive, and done at the bedside. However, it is considered less sensitive than Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) Tc‐HMPAO (99 m). This study aims to test the yield of brain perfusion SPECT testing after a TCD has demonstrated some level of intracranial blood flow among patients fulfilling clinical criteria for BD/DNC. Methods: This was a single‐center retrospective cohort study of all the patients fulfilling clinical criteria for BD/DNC who underwent brain perfusion SPECT after an intracerebral circulatory arrest was not confirmed by TCD between July 2016 and January 2022. Results: TCD was an initial ancillary test performed in 252 patients (99.6%) fulfilling clinical criteria for BD/DNC. A complete circulatory arrest was demonstrated in 228 (90.5%) patients. Brain perfusion SPECT was performed in the remaining 24 patients. The absence of cerebral perfusion consistent with BD/DNC was found in 21 cases (87.5%). BD/DN could not be confirmed in three patients (12.5%). Conclusions: SPECT testing has a high diagnostic yield when TCD fails to confirm a suspected diagnosis of BD/DNC. Combining these two modalities may be an optimal strategy for BD/DNC diagnosis when this is required by local regulations or when confounding factors interfere with the performance of a complete clinical assessment. This article will aim to cover military writers' comments upon the psychological, emotional, and motivational aspects of soldiers in the eighteenth century. In recent years, there has been a positive re‐evaluation of the Ancien Régime soldier compared with that of the later citizen soldier of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. This article seeks to add to this re‐appraisal by introducing a literature element to the discussion, highlighting and analysing the many passages writers wrote on these psychological topics, such as the fear of death in combat, the world of honour governing the soldier, and nationalistic differences in temperament. This paper proposes that the early monastery at Medeshamstede (later Peterborough) was the sponsor and supporter of the hermit saint, Guthlac, on the fenland island of Crowland. It locates that initiative in the early Benedictine practice in England. It is argued that Medeshamstede subsequently sustained the saint's pre‐Viking cult, and is the best candidate for the location where Felix produced the saint's Life. The potential impact of this proposition on received understandings of the relationships between the monasteries of Medeshamstede and Ely and the kingdoms of Mercia and East Anglia – played out through the local polity of the Gyrwe – is noted. A new computational analysis of tilt behaviour in perovskites is presented. This includes the development of a computational program – PALAMEDES – to extract tilt angles and the tilt phase from molecular dynamics simulations. The results are used to generate simulated selected‐area electron and neutron diffraction patterns which are compared with experimental patterns for CaTiO3. The simulations not only reproduced all symmetrically allowed superlattice reflections associated with tilt but also showed local correlations that give rise to symmetrically forbidden reflections and the kinematic origin of diffuse scattering. Seasonal cycles in plants and animals drive key timings of human practices in an agrosystem like the best time for harvest, planting, or pruning. Within the framework of historical phenological studies, we attempt a reconstruction of the olive (Olea europaea L.) phenology along millennia. Thanks to its extraordinary longevity, the olive tree is a living proxy from the past and embodies a still uncollected long‐term memory of ecological behaviors. A cultural keystone species, olive cultivation has more and more played a crucial role for biodiversity conservation, livelihood of rural communities and their enrooted cultural identity in the whole Mediterranean. By compiling traditional phenological knowledge from historical written sources and oral traditions, and using it as historical bio‐indicator of the linkage between human ecological practices and seasonal changes of plant behavior, we compiled a monthly ecological calendar of the olive tree covering the last ∼2800 years. As a case study, we chose a special place: Sicily, unique for its position in the Mediterranean, geomorphology and legacies in the form of cross‐temporal accumulated eco‐cultures. Such a sui generis ecological calendar provides an additional case study to explore the intertwining of plant behavior and human adaptation strategies and the interplay between cultural diversity, ecological disturbance and phenological stability. All of this, in turn, can inform action for the present and future sustainable management of these millennial trees. Plain Language Summary: Sicily is a unique island for its geographic location, richness of biodiversity and long‐lasting history of cultural cross‐fertilization. On the island, it is still possible to find ancient olive trees many centuries old. Local traditional ecological practices are a key factor in their longevity, thus they represent an extremely important biocultural heritage. In the attempt to understand how the olive trees and humans have co‐adapted along history, we looked at this plant behavior according to changing seasons over the last three millennia and how humans' accumulated body of experimental knowledge, lying behind their land use practices, has helped them develop adaptation strategies. How far we can ensure the olive biocultural continuity today and in the future depends on how much we can learn from our own past. Political print satire, construed as an articulation of sedition and dissent, is most commonly associated in Britain with its 18th‐century 'Golden Age'. Beyond Victorian fiction, the go‐to 19th‐century source tends to be the hegemonic, London‐centric Punch. It is not widely known that, as Punch mellowed and popularised in the 1860s and 1870s, England's booming urban centres gave rise to a distinct form of citizen journalism which used boisterous satire as an effective vehicle for sociopolitical comment, evidence‐based analysis and civic activism. Not only did the provincial satirical periodical filter parliamentary affairs through a critical provincial lens but at a time when politics were largely local, it engaged with the extra‐parliamentary power vested in civic and municipal governance. It aspired to much more than diversion through witty posturing. Morally and ideologically inspired, fuelled by righteous indignation, it successfully used the protest of the pen to agitate in the cause of social and political reform, demonstrating the 'everyday' resistance and common sense essential to liberal governmentality. Referencing some of the most enduring and respected examples of the genre – the Porcupine in Liverpool, the Town Crier in Birmingham and the Free Lance in Manchester – this article casts light upon this poorly understood journalism of conviction. A cause and effect of both emotional and intellectual release, it serves as an excellent example of citizenship as performed political passion, in an age of public conformity and restraint. Although climate change, pollution, and environmental degradation are contemporary problems, these are also challenges with deep historic roots in antiquity. 2,000 years ago, during the Roman Climate Optimum, a period of unusually warm, wet, and stable temperatures in the Mediterranean from roughly 200 BCE to 150 CE, the Romans altered the natural environment so greatly that they produced a level of pollution that was unparalleled until the Industrial Revolution. It is precisely in this contradictory time of unusually productive growth and destruction that we discover a blossoming of textual and visual ecological calendars illustrating how the Romans experienced the changing Mediterranean seasons. Roman agricultural treatises instruct us on specific agricultural tasks based on celestial movement, the arrival of particular winds, and on corporeal sensations, such as the warmth of the soil. Literary texts from the period portray kinship and shared corporeality between farmers and plants, with parent farmers listening to and assisting plant‐children in achieving their desires. The concept of measuring time by means of the human body and its sensations is most explicit in the agricultural mosaics of the Late Roman period, which depict enslaved workers laboring, sweating, stomping, plowing, and performing seasonal tasks. While much of the conceptualization of indigenous ecological calendars is framed within the context of modern states, juxtaposing ancient predecessors and contemporary practices offers a new perspective on this topic. It is well known that, within the Latin production of written text, peculiar metric schemes were followed not only in poetic compositions, but also in many prose works. Such metric patterns were based on so‐called syllabic quantity, that is, on the length of the involved syllables, and there is substantial evidence suggesting that certain authors had a preference for certain metric patterns over others. In this research we investigate the possibility to employ syllabic quantity as a base for deriving rhythmic features for the task of computational authorship attribution of Latin prose texts. We test the impact of these features on the authorship attribution task when combined with other topic‐agnostic features. Our experiments, carried out on three different datasets using support vector machines (SVMs) show that rhythmic features based on syllabic quantity are beneficial in discriminating among Latin prose authors.
