The Zagros foldbelt – foreland system in SW Iran is a prolific hydrocarbon province with known reserves of more than 90 billion brl of oil and 800 TCF of natural gas. Establishing the structural style of folding in the Zagros area presents a major challenge due both to the geographical extent of the foldbelt, which is some 1600 km long in total, and the presence of marked lateral variations in fold style related to the complex regional tectonic history. In addition, while numerous high‐quality structural studies of the Zagros have been completed over the last 20 years, they support a variety of different interpretations and are therefore $$difficult to synthesize. In this paper, we review the general structural style of the Zagros fold‐and‐thrust belt in SW Iran, and in particular the style of folding in the Lurestan arc, Dezful embayment, Izeh Zone and Fars arc. We summarise relationships between folding in these areas and fracture development, and investigate the timing of folding and the interaction between NW‐SE oriented "Zagros" folds and north‐south oriented "Arabian" folds. Finally, we briefly assess the implications of fold style for petroleum systems in the Zagros area. Although no new data are presented in this paper, a series of unpublished maps are used to illustrate the main results and include: a map showing the extent of the main detachment levels across the Lurestan, Dezful and Fars structural domains; two palaeotectonic maps (for Late Cretaceous – Paleocene and Miocene – Pliocene times, respectively), showing the position of the deformation fronts of the Zagros and the North Oman thrust systems and their potential spatial and temporal relationship with folding; and a set of four maps showing the distribution of reservoir rocks which are grouped by age into the Permian – Triassic Dehram Group, the Late Jurassic – Early Cretaceous Khami Group, the Late Cretaceous Bangestan Group, and the Oligocene – Miocene Asmari Formation. In addition, for the Lurestan, Dezful and Fars structural domains, a series of regional cross‐sections at the same scale are presented and discussed. Most of the data in this review paper were acquired in order to gain an improved understanding of the petroleum systems in the Zagros area; however the data are used here to investigate a range of interacting processes including tectonics, sediment deposition and subsurface fluid flow in the development of the fold‐and‐thrust belt and its associated foreland basins. The resulting synthesis is intended to provice a starting point for future tectonostratigraphic and hydrocarbon‐related studies which will make use of both existing and new multidisciplinary techniques to constrain the results. The knowledge acquired and the techniques used will be of benefit in future challenges including the identification of subsurface reservoirs suitable for the permanent storage of CO2 to mitigate the effects of climate change. Mudbrick settlements are a common sight in central Oman and are often attributed to the Yaʿariba and al‐Busaydī periods. They have been the subject of study of different projects in the past, providing a good basis for understanding the settlements. This paper will review how the mudbrick settlements have been studied since the beginning of this century and discuss approaches for future research. A specific focus of this study is the interpretation and analysis of the material culture of the mudbrick settlements. Previous ceramic studies are analysed and this paper aims to refine the ceramic chronology of the Late Islamic period in central Oman. This outcome provides a first comprehensive study on the ceramics of this time period and region. In doing so, one of the goals is to establish a baseline for future studies on this period so that it can provide a reference for other archaeologists who find similar material and settlements, to re(dis)cover subrecent times in Oman. Oman and its conflict management model are the focus of this paper. This model has crystalized out of the three stand‐alone but complementary systems of conflict resolution which evolved in an ad hoc fashion: the institute of tribal leaders; the reconciliation committees; and the formal judicial system. These systems offer a foundation for the current efforts of the local people to sustain a peaceful co‐existence among the vibrant and ethnically diverse Omani communities known for their turbulent past. The analyzed data obtained from interviews with Omani tribal leaders, reconciliation committee members, and lawyers shed light on both the strengths of the conflict management model and the modern challenges which the model faces. The findings confirm that this model represents a coherent entity run by an integrated constitutional‐tribal order. They also suggest that the model serves as a state mechanism for balancing power between the country's major players—the government and the institute of tribal leaders. The novel contribution of this paper lies in linking the origin and philosophy of each system with the "mediation identity" of Oman's foreign policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes an efficient optical fiber communication scheme for an optical metro access network (OMAN) based on an optical multicarrier (OMC) generator. The central office (CO)'s foundation is a novel, cost‐effective OMC‐generating technique. The OMC is designed from a pulsed laser source and three cascaded electro‐optic modulators (EOMs) driven by an amplified RF source of 20 GHz signal that has generated more than 60 frequencies with excellent tone‐to‐noise ratio (TNR) ~ 40 dB and amplitude excursions from zero to 3 dB. The conventional CO is replaced with a cost‐effective OMC‐based source with an effective switching mechanism, which is necessary and equally important to be handled reliably. The downstream data of 20 Gbps per carrier is transmitted using a duo‐binary coding scheme. Six remote nodes (RNs) supported by the suggested OMC source, at each RN 10 optical network units (ONUs), can be deployed having distance laps of 5 km between the RNs, the distance between the RNs and the ONUs is kept at 2 km, the ONUs were tested w.r.t the bit error rate (BER) and the power penalties for the proposed transmissions. The BER for different fiber lengths from 5 to 25 km at various RNs and ONUs ranges were calculated and demonstrated from 1e−3 to 1e−13, showing the feasibility of the proposed OMAN. Water played an undeniably significant role in the origins of complex societies across the Near East, but political complexity in regions like Southeast Arabia diverges dramatically from the more well‐known histories of Egypt, the Levant and Mesopotamia. Through quantitative analysis, this paper investigates spatial associations between water availability and Umm an‐Nar towers in Adh Dhahirah Governorate of Oman. We hypothesise that ancient Umm an‐Nar people targeted high water flow accumulation areas for major settlements with towers. Our results lead us to reject the null hypothesis of no spatial association between tower settlements and water and help clarify the role of water in the rise of complex polities. This paper provides an overview of research on core from Oman Drilling Project Hole BT1B and the surrounding area, plus new data and calculations, constraining processes in the Tethyan subduction zone beneath the Samail ophiolite. The area is underlain by gently dipping, broadly folded layers of allochthonous Hawasina pelagic sediments, the metamorphic sole of the Samail ophiolite, and Banded Unit peridotites at the base of the Samail mantle section. Despite reactivation of some faults during uplift of the Jebel Akdar and Saih Hatat domes, the area preserves the tectonic "stratigraphy" of the Cretaceous subduction zone. Gently dipping listvenite bands, parallel to peridotite banding and to contacts between the peridotite and the metamorphic sole, replace peridotite at and near the basal thrust. Listvenites formed at less than 200°C and (poorly constrained) depths of 25–40 km by reaction with CO2‐rich, aqueous fluids migrating from greater depths, derived from devolatilization of subducting sediments analogous to clastic sediments in the Hawasina Formation, at 400°–500°. Such processes could form important reservoirs for subducted CO2. Listvenite formation was accompanied by ductile deformation of serpentinites and listvenites—perhaps facilitated by fluid‐rock reaction—in a process that could lead to aseismic subduction in some regions. Addition of H2O and CO2 to the mantle wedge, forming serpentinites and listvenites, caused large increases in the solid mass and volume of the rocks. This may have been accommodated by fractures formed as a result of volume changes, mainly at a serpentinization front. It provides insights into subduction zone processes, including large fluxes of recycled CO2 from subducting sediments into the leading edge of the mantle wedge, and surprisingly low temperature ductile deformation at less than 200°C. Background: In Oman, limited access to adequately prepared healthcare providers in primary healthcare threatens the provision of quality care to patients and families and access to healthcare services. Nurse practitioners (NP) are in an excellent position to address safety issues and ensure quality healthcare with their advanced nursing skills, knowledge, and acumen for acceptable cultural and religious practices. Aims: To explain Oman's national strategic plans, processes, challenges, opportunities, and both regional and global implications for the facilitation of NP role implementation and policies. Sources of evidence: The Nursing and Midwifery Human Resources framework guided the NP implementation project. Guided by the framework, the World Health Organization and the Omani Ministry of Health conducted multiple situational analyses (2004–2016). Later, the NP role was planned and implemented in Oman. During and after implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the NP role implementation were continuously conducted using multiple focus groups, individual interviews, and field visits. Discussion: The NP role implementation revealed multiple challenges and opportunities that either hinder or support NP role implementation. Additionally, the NP implementation project revealed various lessons learned. Implications for nursing and health policy: National and global nursing leaders and health policymakers should collaborate to discuss NP issues, especially NP role sustainability, legal approval and recognition, prescriptive authority, title protection, practice acts, and professional regulation. Conclusion: This paper informs nursing leaders and policymakers in the Middle East and other countries in the global community about Oman's experience regarding NP role implementation. Serpentinization and carbonation of mantle rocks (peridotite alteration) are fundamentally important processes for a spectrum of geoscience topics, including arc volcanism, earthquake processes, chemosynthetic biological communities, and carbon sequestration. Data from a hydrophone array deployed in the Multi‐Borehole Observatory (MBO) of the Oman Drilling Project demonstrates that free gas generated by peridotite alteration and/or microbial activity migrates through the formation in discrete bursts of activity. We detected several, minutes‐long, swarms of gas discharge into Hole BA1B of the MBO over the course of a 9 month observation interval. The episodic nature of the migration events indicates that free gas accumulates in the permeable flow network, is pressurized, and discharges rapidly into the borehole when a critical pressure, likely associated with a capillary barrier at a flow constriction, is reached. Our observations reveal a dynamic mode of fluid migration during serpentinization, and highlight the important role that free gas can play in modulating pore pressure, fluid flow, and alteration kinetics during peridotite weathering. Plain Language Summary: Serpentinization, the reaction between water and upper mantle rocks, is a widespread process on Earth that has important implications for a variety of topics, including the origin of life and carbon sequestration. We monitored the acoustic pressure inside a well established in a serpentinizing region for 9 months, and found that intense swarms of gas bubbles were discharged into the well in several discrete episodes. The nature of these episodes indicates that free gas accumulates in the formation and then rapidly migrates through fractures when the gas pressure is high enough. This is the first time this type of gas pressure and migration cycle has been recognized during serpentinization. An important consequence is that gas is expelled out of the peridotite during its alteration, maintaining the weathering reactions far from equilibrium, a process which may be added in existing kinetics models of serpentinization. This paper reports the results of excavation at Mugharat al‐Kahf (WTN01) in Wādī Tanūf, North‐central Oman. It also provides information on the nonmortuary and nonsedentary activities in central Oman during the Wādī Sūq period (2000–1600 BCE), as the subsistence and social arrangements of this period are the subject of much debate. Previous surveys had discovered a substantial amount of Wādī Sūq pottery at the site. This project took forward the excavation for further exploration. The excavation at Test Pit 1 identified Layers Ia and Ib, wherein pottery sherds, charred date stones and other samples for radiocarbon dating were discovered. These prove the cave's occupation during the early third millennium BCE, early second millennium BCE and the Islamic period. The analysis of artefacts and floral remains provided insights into the sojourn, storage and consumption of dates in the cave, and the mobile lifestyle in central Oman. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper introduces the first results of the joint Omani‐Italian archaeological project at Wādī Banī Ḫālid (northern Šarqiyyah governorate, eastern al‐Ḥaǧar), where a dense Iron Age and ancient Islamic occupation was detected. The aim of the project is the definition of the Iron Age settlement patterns along the eastern al‐Ḥaǧar landscape and its relationship with both the coastal areas and the al‐Ḥaǧar inner piedmont sites of central Oman. In fact, this project follows previous studies of the coastal environment between Muscat and Raʾs al‐Ḥadd, where several seasonal fishermen villages were investigated, and their connections with inner permanent sites, such as Lizq, recognised during the Early Iron Age II (1300–600 BCE). Therefore, Wādī Banī Ḫālid stands as a peculiar case of an Iron Age territorial unit, a natural scenario made of a narrow alluvial valley which provided natural conditions for the development of a complex culture. Moreover, the material culture emerged after a first excavation campaign proved that the main occupational phase of the imposing fortified settlement WBK1 is the Late Iron Age (late first millennium BCE to third–fourth centuries CE), thus hopefully allowing new questions to be posed for the definition of Late Iron Age cultures and the chronology in central Oman, which is mostly known based on the excavation of funerary evidence. For this reason, the first part of the paper focuses on the results of the first season in Wādī Banī Ḫālid, and the second part discusses the links between Wādī Banī Ḫālid and the south‐eastern Arabia general framework during the Late Iron Age. This paper explores the institutional determinants of FDI in Oman and the role of FDI in enhancing Oman's economic diversification strategy. Time series data was collected for the selected institutional factors influencing FDI during the period 1996–2018. Unit root and Granger causality framework were used in the analysis. Results indicated that strong and clear property rights protection, corruption freedom, fiscal and trade freedom, cause FDI inflows in Oman, whereas business freedom had no effects. It is crucial for policy makers in Oman to strengthen these institutional factors, craft and implement a policy framework to sustain their efficacy, while improving business freedom towards an open economic model. This also includes strengthening the legal framework, combating corruption and reducing subsidies and other forms of favouritism towards state‐owned enterprises. Such policy measures, aimed at channelling FDI flow towards targeted sectors, would enhance Oman's diversification strategy and foster economic growth and development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: Although cloud seeding is a commonly used and plausible method for rainfall enhancement, its practical efficacy has not been established for seeding of convective clouds with hygroscopic materials. Other methods of rainfall enhancement are viewed as much less plausible. Thus, although increased electrical charge has been shown to enhance precipitation in cloud chamber experiments, exactly how ionisation of clouds can increase rainfall in the open atmosphere remains conjectural. A trial of the efficacy of ionisation for rainfall enhancement in the Hajar Mountains of Oman was carried out over 2013–2018. This paper provides some background to this non‐mainstream approach to increasing rainfall, showing how statistical modelling of rainfall data might be used to nudge rainfall enhancement via ionisation towards a more scientifically acceptable status. Analysis of the data collected in the trial shows that ionisation led to a statistically significant enhancement in positive rainfall in gauges located up to 70 km downwind of the ionisers. A headline analysis specified prior to commencement of the trial resulted in an estimate of 16.23% enhancement relative to rainfall that would have fallen without any ionisation, while a more sophisticated after the event analysis increased this estimate to 17.64%. In a year, millions of forms of plastic are produced, and approximately, half of the generated plastics are used once only. Incorrect and insufficient management of these waste materials causes adverse effects on the nature of the soil, water, humans, and animals' life. One type of waste plastic is metalized plastic waste (MPW), which is used mainly in different types of food packaging productions, and there is no appropriate technology for reusing it all over the world. In this paper, the effect of MPW as a fiber by 0.5% and 1% on compressive, flexural load capacity, and toughness of green concrete containing 7.5% and 15% silica fume or natural zeolite in Oman Sea tidal zone environment at 28, 90, and 180 days was investigated. The results indicate that by adding the MPW fiber, the compressive strength and maximum flexural load capacity of green concrete were decreased 25% and 15%, respectively. Meanwhile, the effect of MPW fiber on concrete containing 15% silica fume was greater than 7.5% silica fume concrete. Flexural toughness of natural zeolite concrete containing 0.5% MPW fiber was up to 510.9% greater than the observed one. Moreover, the toughness of green concrete containing 1% MPW fiber and zeolite was up to 35% greater than 0.5% MPW concrete. Meanwhile, the effect of MPW fiber on flexural toughness of concrete containing 15% natural zeolite was greater than 7.5% natural zeolite concrete. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Self‐perceived cognitive factors are the vital components in the early stage of entrepreneurship development activities. This paper examines the effect of self‐perceived cognitive factors on entrepreneurship development activities in Oman by using the Oman Global Entrepreneurship Monitor survey data collected in 2019. Using the ordered logit regression model, the study found that there is a significant and positive effect of business opportunities on the development of entrepreneurship activities. Necessary skills and creativity also have a significant positive effect on entrepreneurship development activities. However, fear of failure in business has a significant negative effect on it. Young and adult Omani populations perceive that they have adequate knowledge, skills, and capacity for innovation and creativity for entrepreneurship, and they have a positive attitude toward entrepreneurship. The majority of young populations perceive that there is enough opportunity to start a business, but many entrepreneurs are afraid to take risks that entail possible failure. To reduce the uncertainty and fear of failure in business, the government needs to create a business‐friendly environment and support entrepreneurs in various aspects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Al‐Khafaji is a central and well‐known point on the early third millennium BC map of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bat, in the Sultanate of Oman. For years, Kasr al‐Khafaji ("Tower 1146") has been understood as an Umm an‐Nar (ca. 2800–2000 BCE) monument standing amid a contemporary village. However, recent excavations by the Bat Archaeological Project (BAP) reveal that the entirety of the known site—monument(s) and settlement—is situated on an anthropogenic clay mound that elevated it meters above the surrounding landscape. This paper presents the results of BAP's recent excavations, emphasising the social spaces created by architecture of various functions and scales. It also considers the implications that this new interpretation of al‐Khafaji may have for how the relationship between Umm an‐Nar towers and settlement should be understood. The paper closes with a discussion of Umm an‐Nar tower function and social meaning, concluding that the Khafaji monument(s) likely served a symbolic and possibly performative role in Umm an‐Nar society that was perceived as separate from Umm an‐Nar settlement. (Geophysical Prospecting 49 , 179–197 (2001)) that invalidate their arguments for the cause of the reduction in the velocity of the vertically propagating slower split shear-wave in the gas cap over the Natih field in Oman. A minor natural oil seepage is described from an unlikely setting in the Oman Mountains. The host rocks are fractured pelagic limestones of the lower member of the Triassic – Lower Jurassic Matbat Formation of the Hamrat Duru Group in the lower part of the allochthonous Hawasina Complex. This paper summarises Oman's established oil families and documents previously recorded oil seepages as context for describing the new seepage, its geochemistry, and possible source rock. The seep oil is different to those known from Oman's oil fields and probably derived from a poor quality, Mesozoic clastic source rock containing a mix of terrigenous and marine organic matter. The most likely source appears to be the Toarcian turbiditic upper member of the Matbat Formation, equivalent to the clastic Mafraq Formation of the Arabian Platform. The occurrence of source rocks in the allochthonous sediments of the NeoTethyan Hawasina Basin has been suspected previously, though their commercial significance remains to be established. Despite the abundance of renewable resources, renewable energy accounts for less than 1% of the total installed power capacity in oil‐producing Gulf Arab states. While the political–economic structures of oil‐producing Gulf Arab states are thought to have played a role in determining these states' remarkably low uptake of renewable energy, these structures remain understudied. With a focus on Oman, we assess how political–economic structures have influenced its adoption of renewable energy. We implement an analytical framework that integrates insights from energy transition studies and the political–economic theory of rentier states. Drawing on secondary data and primary information from semi‐structured interviews with renewable energy developers and energy experts, this study reveals that renewable energy roll‐out in Oman has been delayed through three different strategies, namely the use media and public debate, a reduction of the power of renewable energy stakeholders, and the use of institutional mechanisms to strengthen hydrocarbon‐based technologies. This paper studies entrepreneurship ecosystem development in a context little discussed in the extant literature to date: Oman. Specifically, it focuses on business incubation (BI) initiatives as a policy tool for developing the local, regional, and national systems of supporting entrepreneurship and SME growth. Although BI's are a popular policy measure for ecosystem development, spreading globally from their original conception in the United States around 60 years ago, their universal effectiveness is questioned. We analyse the tenability of BI as an economic development strategy by entrepreneurship ecosystems as a conceptual framework to help us understand the multitudinous cultural, institutional, and governance structures required for success. Specifically, we consider these ecosystem dynamics and their influence on the incubation of SMEs in the novel context of an oil-rich yet transitioning economy such as Oman. Conducting interviews with 22 key informants within a range of ecosystem actors (policy-makers, incubator managers, academics, and entrepreneurs) we find that existing capabilities within the Omani BI programme are not yet fully fit for purpose, highlighting the need to establish developmental priorities for the wider entrepreneurial ecosystem, bottom-up. Finally, we reflect on the wider cultural and institutional constraints highlighted, and suggest potentially fruitful avenues for further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Energy is the main concern in the design and implementation of desalination plants; this concern is even more significant in remote areas with limited or no access to the main power grid. This paper presents an off‐grid hybrid renewable energy assessment for a reverse osmosis desalination plant. The plant with a 10 m3 desalination capacity is located in al‐Batinah region in the north of Oman. For better assessment, the meteoritic data of the site such as temperature, wind velocity, solar radiation, and clearness index are extracted. The simulation has been done using Homer software, and all possible combinations of photovoltaic panel/wind turbine/generator/battery are calculated and compared with one another. At last, two different approaches, a complete renewable hybrid energy with and without generator backup, are compared and the results are provided. The results of the experiment show that the most economic off‐grid hybrid energy system is a combination of a 12.5 kW PV panel with 335 W energy production for each panel, a battery bank consisting of 12 batteries with 205 Ah capacity, and a generator as a backup. The cost of energy for one kWhr is $0.28; on the other hand, a hybrid renewable energy system with the combination of PV/wind turbine/battery costs $0.37 per kWhr. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper argues that the agricultural aspect of the Umm an-Nar economy has been largely ignored by researchers, due to an overemphasis on copper production and trade. This is true at the level of the smallest rural settlements, villages and settlements whose primary focus was agricultural production. The key social developments of this period have often been explained by linking them to the exploitation of copper ore and its trade with surrounding regions such as Mesopotamia and the Indus. However, this paper will argue — based on quantified pottery analysis — that it is during this time that we see the development, for the first time in the Oman peninsula, of widespread sedentary occupation that was based on small agricultural villages where there is no evidence of copper ore exploitation, thus suggesting that the economic basis of Umm an-Nar society was essentially agricultural. Furthermore, it will be argued that, through the use of a new survey methodology, it is possible to locate such settlements, even where they have left no traces of monuments, such as tombs or round towers. The methodology allows preliminary comparisons to be made between the intensity of occupation in different periods. The ancient port city of Sumhuram (Dhofar Governorate, Sultanate of Oman) has been the focus of over 20 years of research by the Italian Mission to Oman (IMTO), University of Pisa, in collaboration with the Office of the Adviser to His Majesty the Sultan for Cultural Affairs (Muscat‐Salalah, Sultanate of Oman). Excavation has revealed most of the town layout, leading to the identification of several buildings, alleyways, squares and workshops, among which two massive buildings stand out, significantly named by the excavators as "Monumental Building" 1 and 2 (MB1 and MB2). This paper presents the results of the excavation inside MB1, characterised by the presence of the only well discovered within the city walls, which was previously interpreted alternatively as a palace or as a temple. The architectural development of the building, its distinctive features, the archaeological material discovered inside it, and its chronology will be discussed. These results highlight the absence of fitting parallels from other ancient South Arabian towns. Overall, it is clear that access to, management of, and control over the water supply of the town represented a key asset which justified the huge investment in workforce and building materials that is reflected in the monumental architecture of this edifice. The excavation of KHB‐1 archaeological site was part of the Joint Hadd Project [Joint Hadd Project is a project operating in the Ja'lān region since 1985, born under the collaboration between ISIAO (Istituto Italiano per l'Africa e l'Oriente, Rome), CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris) and the University of Bologna] carried out in the Ja'lān region, along the coast of the Sultanate of Oman. Different phases of occupation with significant structural evidences were identified within the deposit: an early short‐term occupation in the 7th millennium, followed by a longer, extended period of occupation during the 4th millennium by a community of hunter‐gatherers, with some evidence of animal husbandry. The material culture recovered from KHB‐1, which includes architectural remains, provides new insights on the cultures of this region, highlighting a need for further excavations and analysis. This paper will illustrate the stratigraphic sequence and the main features recovered at KHB‐1, followed by a discussion on the two main periods of occupation which will help shed a light on the site function and more broadly provide key insights on mobility, economy, and material culture of Ja'lān in the beginning of 7th and along the 4th millennium B.C. This paper presents the findings of a research study aimed at assessing the reliability and validity of an Arabic version of the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI) in Muscat, the capital of Oman. The research was carried out among a population of women attending antenatal care clinics (N = 309) and reports on the prevalence of high scores and assessment of reliability and validity of the Arabic CAPI. A sub‐sample of mothers were interviewed to explore their views about the acceptability of the tool locally. The mean score of the Abuse Scale was 159.6 (range 26–390), which was higher than the US version (mean = 91). Internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.911) and test–retest reliability (Pearson's r = 0.89; two‐tailed p 0.00) were both high. With regard to the construct validity, the six‐factor structure of the original version was not replicated; only three factors were obtained. The interview data showed that the CAPI was easy to complete and appropriate for use in Oman. The Arabic version of the CAPI showed a highly satisfactory internal consistency and test–retest reliability. This suggests that the Arabic version of the CAPI is a valid and reliable tool to use to assess potential for child physical abuse within Oman. These results are in concordance with other cross‐cultural versions of the CAPI. BACKGROUND: Ommatissus lybicus de Bergevin (Hemiptera: Tropiduchidae) (Dubas Bug, DB) is an insect pest attacking date palms. It occurs in Arab countries including Oman. In this paper, the logistic, ordinary least square, and geographical weighted regressions were applied to model the absence/presence and density of DB against climate factors. A method is proposed for modelling spatially correlated prorations annually over the study period, based on annual and seasonal outbreaks. The historical 2006–2015 climate data were obtained from weather stations located in nine governorates in northern Oman, while dataloggers collected the 2017 microclimate data in eight of these nine governorates. RESULTS: Logistic regression model showed the percentages of correctly predicted values using a cut‐off point of 0.5 were 90%, 88% and 84%, indicating good classification accuracy. OLS and GWR models showed an overall trend of strong linear correlation between DB infestation levels and short‐ and long‐term climate factors. The three models suggested that precipitation, elevation, temperature, humidity, wind direction and wind speed are important in influencing the spatial distribution and the presence/absence of dense DB populations. CONCLUSION: The results provide an improved understanding of climate factors that impact DB's spread and is considered useful for managing DB infestations in date palm plantations. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The main aim of this study is to provide empirical evidence examining how outsourced internal audit function (IAF) providers are associated with audit efficiency, and how such providers interact with high‐quality external auditors. We use a sample of 711 observations for companies listed on the Muscat Security Market during the period 2005–2014. Based on pooled regression, we find that audit efficiency is significantly improved when the IAF provider is from a Big4 audit firm, whereas a non‐Big4 audit firm IAF provider is associated with reduced audit efficiency. Furthermore, we find evidence suggesting significant interaction between the external auditor and IAF in relation to audit efficiency if the outsourced IAF provider is from a Big4 audit firm. In additional analysis, we construct a new measure for audit efficiency, dividing the IAF providers into Big4, second tier, and other non‐Big4, and consider the time of connection between such providers and their clients. We still observe that Big4, as an outsourced IAF provider, is more significantly associated with audit efficiency than other types of IAF provider. This paper is important because there is currently little evidence concerning the type of outsourced IAF provider; it contains useful information for auditors, companies, and regulators. The archaeological site at Bat has an important status with regard to research on the Umm an-Nar culture. Investigations began there in 1972 and were revived in 2004, when the excavation of tomb 401 was begun. This paper presents the complete corpus of grave-goods. Despite all the disturbances within the find layers, when comparing the two chambers it is possible to observe some indications of the different burial cycles and detect distinguishing characteristics. Taking into account the divergent earlier and later ceramic styles, burial use must be proposed between 2400 and 2200 BC. This date accords with observations of the architectural details of tomb 401 and with the sequence of tomb construction types in the Bat region. Information about several papers discussed at a symposium recognizing the 25th anniversary of the accession of H. M. Qaboos Bin Said, the Sultan of Oman, is presented. Robert H. Pelletreau discusses the evolution of the close and cooperative relationship between the U.S. and Oman, which is the result of Qaboos' interest and guidance. However, Joseph A. Kechichian highlights some of the important trends in foreign policy of Oman.

Background. With projected nursing shortages, an aging workforce, and the imminent retirement of nurse leaders, nursing leadership shortages are a concern. While several studies have indicated the interest of nurses in pursuing leadership positions, limited research has focused on examining the influence of the leadership practice environment on nurses' motivation to lead. Aim. The aims of the study were to (1) assess the relationship between the leadership environment and the motivation of nurses to lead and (2) determine whether there are particular aspects of the leadership environment that influence motivation to lead. Methods. A cross‐sectional research design was used to collect data from 435 nurses working in 16 public and private hospitals in Oman. Leadership Environment Scale and Motivation to Lead Scale were used to assess participants' perceived leadership environment and their motivation to engage in formal leadership roles, respectively. Multivariate linear regression was used to assess the relationship between the perceived leadership environment and the motivation of nurses to undertake leadership roles. Findings. Nurses reported a mean scale value of 3.208 out of 5 (SD = 0.467) for their motivation to lead, which exceeds the midpoint, indicating a strong motivation to engage in formal leadership roles. Nurses reported a mean score of 3.194 out of 4 (SD = 0.661), which exceeds the midpoint, suggesting a favorable perception of leadership environment. The findings showed a significant relationship between the leadership environment and nurses' motivation to lead. Specifically, self‐organization (β = 0.185, p = 0.001, CI = 0.086–0.378), agents (β = 0.221, p = 0.002, CI = 0.124–0.474), and transformative exchange (β = 0.100, p = 0.037, CI = 0.101–0.142) were characteristics of the leadership environment that were associated with greater motivation to engage in leadership. Conclusion. This study emphasizes the importance of cultivating a supportive leadership environment as a potential strategy to attract nurses to assume formal nursing leadership roles. Implications for Nursing Management. Strategies to improve nurses' motivation to lead in a complex healthcare environment include improving nurses' active involvement in their organization, creating a collegial supportive and mentoring leadership culture, and improving transformative exchange by supporting career and educational advancement. Aim. This study aimed to (1) describe the perceived level of role transition from education to practice of new graduate nurses in Oman and (2) explore the barriers to and enablers of a successful transition. Background. The transition from a familiar academic environment to becoming a professional nurse is stressful and challenging. Exploring the transition barriers and enablers is instrumental in designing an effective experience. However, studies exploring the transition experience from academia to practice among new graduate nurses working in Oman are limited. Design. This study used a mixed method research design. Methods. Data were collected from nurses working for no longer than two years. Role transition was assessed using the Casey‐Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey. Barriers to and enablers of transition were explored through a focus group interview. Results. The total sample consists of 405 nurses working in 13 public hospitals. The majority (68.89%) of the participants had worked as a nurse for less than 6 months. The average score of the comfort and confidence subscale was 2.96 (SD = 0.38). Findings showed that the amount of workload and unclear role expectations were the most frequent difficulties new graduate nurses were experiencing in their transition from a student to a staff nurse. Findings from focus group interviews revealed a number of barriers and enablers that affected the transition experience of the new graduates. The barriers were fear, insufficient academic preparation, bridging the knowledge‐practice gap, and limited nurse‐physician interactions. The enablers were teamwork, organizational support, and the internship phase. Conclusion. The findings illustrate the need for healthcare organizations to design effective internship programs to ensure a successful transition experience. Providing staff with preceptorship training and enhancing nurse‐physician communication are important strategies for creating a comfortable work environment and ultimately ensuring a successful training experience for new nurses. The Arabian Sea (AS) hosts the world's thickest and most intense oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), and previous studies have documented a dramatic decline of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the northeastern AS in recent decades. In this study, using the recently released data from Biogeochemical‐Argo floats, we found a surprising trend of recovery in deoxygenation within the core region of the OMZ in the AS (ASOMZ) since 2013. The average DO concentration increased by approximately threefold, from ∼0.63 μM in 2013 to ∼1.68 μM in 2022, and the thickness of the ASOMZ decreased by 13%. We find that the weakening of Oman upwelling resulting from the weakening of the summer monsoon is the main driver of oxygenation in the ASOMZ. In addition, the reduction of primary production linked to warming‐driven stratification reinforces deoxygenation recovery at depth. In December 2018, the University of Arizona was awarded a US$3.9 million contract from the Sultanate of Oman to develop research laboratories for the country's "One Million Date Palms for Oman" initiative. This project is only the most recent example of a much longer set of collaborations between actors in the two regions, which began when Omani date palms were imported to the University of Arizona's Agriculture Experiment Station in the 1890s. In tracing this history, I show how establishing state power in the US West was facilitated by the work of scientists and research institutions drawing on materials and knowledge from the Middle East. In the case of Arizona, the colonial project was advanced through the federally funded land‐grant programmes at the University of Arizona, which aimed to entice white settlers to the territory through promoting commercially oriented agriculture. University researchers' efforts to secure date palm imports from abroad illustrate how the settler colonial vision treated the desert Southwest as an analogue to the Middle East, but their personal laboratory for developing modern knowledge about desert farming. The case sheds light on the role of scientific institutions in consolidating state power in desert frontiers – a process that is depoliticised by framing the desert as a laboratory as a site for "modern" science rather than a site to be colonised. Here we present a method for using the spatial x–y coordinate of an image cropped from the cylindrical surface of digital 3D drill core images and demonstrate how this spatial metadata can be used to improve unsupervised machine learning performance. This approach is applicable to any data set with known spatial context, however, here it is used to classify 400 m of drillcore imagery into 12 distinct classes reflecting the dominant rock types and alteration features in the core. We modified two unsupervised learning models to incorporate spatial metadata and an average improvement of 25% was achieved over equivalent models that did not utilize metadata. Our semi‐supervised workflow involves unsupervised network training followed by semi‐supervised clustering where a support vector machine uses a subset of M expert labeled images to assign a pseudolabel to the entire data set. Fine‐tuning of the best performing model showed an f1 (macro average) of 90%, and its classifications were used to estimate bulk fresh and altered rock abundance downhole. Validation against the same information gathered manually by experts when the core was recovered during the Oman Drilling Project revealed that our automatically generated data sets have a significant positive correlation (Pearson's r of 0.65–0.72) to the expert generated equivalent, demonstrating that valuable geological information can be generated automatically for 400 m of core with only ∼24 hr of domain expert effort. Enriched mid‐ocean ridge basalts (E‐MORB) commonly erupt at mid‐ocean ridges (MOR) and seamounts, but their relationship to "depleted" MORB (D‐MORB) and the processes controlling their magmatic evolution at MORs are not fully understood, hence raising more general questions about magma generation in the mantle. We here explore this conundrum through an investigation of the Masirah ophiolite (southeast Oman), a near‐unique "true" MOR ophiolite. Unlike most (e.g., Tethyan) ophiolites, it was not affected by subduction and is therefore potentially able to provide valuable geological insights into the magmatic evolution of a full section of oceanic crust. Previous work has shown that the igneous crust at Masirah was thin (1.5–2.0 km) and constructed from both D‐ and E‐MORB magmas, concluding that it formed at a slow‐spreading ridge at ∼150 Ma followed by an episode of "Nb‐enriched" magmatism with trace‐element enrichments exceeding E‐MORB during intraplate rifting ∼20 Ma later. We reinvestigate the geology of Masirah and present new field observations, geochemical data and high‐precision U‐Pb ages to constrain the magmatic history of seafloor spreading and off‐axis magmatism. We found that D‐MORB and E‐MORB magmatism at Masirah was synchronous and overlapped in both composition and time with the Nb‐enriched magmatism (no older than 135 Ma). Both types of magmatism were therefore integral in the formation of the Masirah ocean crust. The relationship between D‐MORB and E‐MORB magmatism described here may be applicable to modern MORs more broadly, but is especially prominent at Masirah due to reduced magmatism and hence a weaker crustal filter. Due to the difficulties involved in accessing oceanic crust directly, especially the deeper stratigraphic levels, the magmatic processes involved in forming the oceanic crust remain poorly understood. Ophiolites, fragments of oceanic lithosphere that were emplaced onto the continent, can offer valuable insights to geologists, but since most ophiolites are thought to have originated in marginal oceanic basins or at the initiation of subduction, a direct comparison remains problematic. In this study, we circumvent this problem by investigating the Masirah Ophiolite, a rare example of a "true" mid‐ocean ridge ophiolite. By combining field observations, geochemistry and geochronology at a level of detail not possible for present‐day oceanic crust, we reconstruct the magmatic evolution of the Masirah paleoridge. We present a more accurate formation age for Masirah and find that magmatism was compositionally variable throughout crustal accretion, with later off‐axis melts becoming more enriched in incompatible trace elements. We propose that the large geochemical variations observed at Masirah may be commonplace at modern mid‐ocean ridges, but that these are often masked due to the typically higher volumes of magmatism that enhance mixing and homogenization. The present paper deals with compositional and microstructural features of 26 pre-Islamic, South Arabian coins recently unearthed during archaeological excavations. Most of the investigated coins come from Sumhuram ( Khor Rori, southern Oman), and were minted by the Hadramawt kingdom (fourth century bc to third century ad); only a few of them belong to the Himyarite kingdom's coinage (first to fourth centuries ad). In addition, some coins of both the Hadramawt and the Himyarite kingdoms found at Qani' ( B'ir 'Ali, Republic of Yemen) have been analysed for comparison. Our main focus was to provide new hints towards the comprehension of the chronological evolution in South Arabian coinage in terms of both metal composition and minting techniques. In addition, some melting crucibles found at Sumhuram have been examined in an attempt to make a comparison with the coins' composition and to test the hypothesis that they were used for minting operations. This paper is a preliminary overview of the main characteristics of the archaeological resource of Oman from a management perspective. It looks at the resource in terms of form, space and time. It covers a pilot statistical analysis of the archaeological data so far input into the proposed National Archaeological Database of Oman ( NADO). The main findings of this analysis show that the management of Omani archaeological resource lacks a well-defined strategic research plan, and that there are large research gaps in many geographical and chronological areas. It also shows that the governmental organisations responsible for the management of the country's archaeological resource are not taking into consideration the potential benefits of archaeological records in their management practices. Aim(s) The aim of the present study was to analyse nurses' perceptions of the communication qualities that are essential for nurse managers to carry out their jobs effectively. Background An examination of effective communication may help to identify nurse manager behaviours that promote dignity and respect. Method(s) A paper-and-pencil survey collected open-ended data from 1526 nursing professionals ( RNs) representing 22 hospitals in Oman. Qualitative content analysis was conducted first, followed by a quantitative descriptive analysis. Results The participants reported frustration with nurse managers who seemed overly focused on mistakes. Many participants felt there was little to no appreciation for tasks that were well done. Nurses also disliked being disciplined openly in front of colleagues or patients. Conclusion(s) The participants stressed that nurse manager feedback should be shared privately and framed in a positive and constructive tone. Active listening, team collaboration and the avoidance of discrimination/favouritism were also emphasised. Implications for nursing management A supportive and communicative work environment promotes nurses' dignity and respect. Embarrassing nurses in front of other health care professionals may be counterproductive. Instead, the study results suggested privately discussing concerns in a positive, constructive tone is more likely to foster nurse trust and dignity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents the results of three seasons of investigations in the western part of Ja'alan in the southern al-Sharqyiah Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman. The results highlight the importance of this part of Ja'alan during the Early Bronze Age ( EBA), particularly the Hafit period and provide us with important information about the funerary archaeological landscape during this period. The results also reveal important aspects of landscape utilisation and occupation during this time and add to our knowledge of the cultural and economic facets of the earliest Bronze Age societies. The distribution of tombs in the landscape suggests that they were constructed by nomadic or semi-nomadic pastoral groups that shifted from one location to another in search of grazing for their livestock. The availability and seasonality of natural resources such as water, pasture and game made it necessary for them to mark their tribal territory with their funerary structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The declining trend in the catches of santer seabream, Cheimerius nufar ( Val. 1830), and sizable capture of immature and mature fish from the Arabian Sea at the coast of Oman have led to questioning the hypothesis that the fishery is in a state of decline due to inappropriate management. The lack of data on the basic biology and landing statistics for exploited fish species have made the management of fish resources in western Indian Ocean complicated. This paper presents data on the population biology of C. nufar in the Arabian Sea, with a view to contributing towards the development of management plans for a sustainable exploitation. A total of 4132 fish were obtained from the artisanal hand-line fishery catch at the Lakbi and Salalah landing sites from April 2005 to March 2007. Size distribution ranged from 16 to 64 cm [total length ( TL)]. About 67.5% of the catch was composed of fish measuring <32 cm TL. Neither sex dominated the population nor were there significant differences in the monthly and annual sex-ratios tested by chi-squared. Spawning is from May to October. The declining trend in the hepatosomatic indice ( HPI) values from September to February was almost identical to the declining trend in the gonado-somatic indice ( GSI) values. The rise and fall in the condition factor ( CF) values could not be related to the spawning period. Females and males mature at 31.9 and 33.7 cm TL, respectively. Otolith readings indicated the life span to be about 13 years. The instantaneous rate of natural mortality was estimated with M = 0.62 year−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the impact of a school-based intervention entitled 'Our Brothers and Sisters in Humanity' on 10th grade female Omani students' religious tolerance. A questionnaire was administered before and after an intervention to a sample of 241 girls, of whom 116 were in the experimental group and 125 in the control group. A semi-structured interview was conducted before and after the intervention with 16 participants, of whom 8 were from the experimental group and 8 from the control group. Analysis of the quantitative data in the postintervention round reveals that there are statistically significant differences between the experimental group and the control group in favour of the experimental group in religious tolerance. Similarly the experimental group shows greater tolerance when compared to the control group in post-intervention interviews. The study suggests that religion is one of the most salient components of Omani pupils' 'identity'. The participants use religion to define their relations with, and determine their tolerance of, those who hold different religious beliefs. However, we conclude that education that capitalises on the perceived similarities between religions can be a means to suppress intolerance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the study of the Arabian Middle Holocene, some of the least widely understood topics are those of nomadism, subsistence strategy and mobility. Until now, various scholars operating in the area have proposed different models, particularly on the basis of faunal analysis and territory evaluations. The focus of this paper will be to reconsider this debate in light of studies carried out in the Ja'lān region in the Sultanate of Oman, where until 1985 the Joint Hadd Project has been conducting archaeological research. Excavated deposits and survey results provide the archaeological basis and are compared with studies on climate, territory, nature and culture. Four different hypotheses for the fourth-millennium Ja'lān communities are proposed and, comparing the different scales of movement with both the territory and resources, the more suitable is concluded to be a micro-regional nomadism model. According to this model, which is well supported by the ethnographical evidence, human groups were moving seasonally from the coast to the mountains, scouring the widyān route. A dearth of archaeological data from the internal area, due to a more widespread and less intense occupation, relatively poor preservation and a lack of proper archaeological survey, emphasise the limits and provide the stimulus for further research. There is a long tradition of studies of the Indian Ocean trade focused almost exclusively on the trade between Roman Egypt and India. Less attention has been paid to the formative period of early historical long-distance trade in the Indian Ocean. The aim of this paper is to discuss some aspects of the development of this trade, based on an analysis of the South Asian pottery found at two different settlements: Sumhuram in the Sultanate of Oman and Tissamaharama in Sri Lanka. Discontinuity surfaces in shallow-marine carbonate successions may represent significant time gaps in the geological record of ancient epeiric-neritic seas. Understanding the hidden geological information contained in major discontinuities is thus of key significance in palaeo-environmental analysis, sequence stratigraphy, reconstructions of sea-level change and basin evolution. In the present paper, the Aptian top Lower Shu'aiba Formation discontinuity in the Sultanate of Oman is taken as a prominent example of a regionally extensive (>100 000 km2) surface with a long (up to 10 Myr) and complex geological history. The top Shu'aiba discontinuity formed on the topographically elevated domain of the Oman platform and represents in essence the Late Aptian time interval. Coeval carbonates in the intrashelf Bab Basin and oceanic rim indicate forced regression and sequence-wise, gradual down-stepping. Available regional, sedimentological, sequence-stratigraphic, petrographic, palaeontological and geochemical evidence from outcrops and cored wells in Oman is summarized, in part complemented by new data, and reviewed in a process-oriented context. In the field, the discontinuity is expressed as a low relief, stained surface with evidence for a marine hardground stage being dominant. Indistinct features that indicate a transient meteoric precursor stage (isotope shifts, meteoric cements, circumgranular cracks, etc.) are present but their interpretation requires careful and detailed work. This feature is remarkable, as a series of relative sea-level falls with amplitudes of up to several tens of metres from the Early to Late Aptian boundary to the end of the Aptian are reported from the Middle East and elsewhere. Despite the palaeogeographic position of the study area in the tropical climate zone, evidence of deep-cutting karst features, characteristic for many long-term exposure surfaces worldwide is scarce. Acknowledging the fact that the modern world offers no genuine analogues for the Lower Aptian carbonate system in Oman, morphological similarities between actualistic, wave-eroded coastal terraces and the top Shu'aiba discontinuity are discussed critically. This discussion may imply that, during an exposure time of several million years, the top Shu'aiba discontinuity experienced repeated stages of shallow flooding and emergence, with each transgression removing portions of the underlying rock record. The data shown here exemplify the complexity of hiatal surfaces in epeiric-neritic carbonates and may serve as a case example for other major discontinuities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BSTRACT Genetic research presents ethical challenges to the achievement of valid informed consent, especially in developing countries with areas of low literacy. During the last several years, a number of genetic research proposals involving Omani nationals were submitted to the Department of Research and Studies, Ministry of Health, Oman. The objective of this paper is to report on the results of an internal quality assurance initiative to determine the extent of the information being provided in genetic research informed consent forms. In order to achieve this, we developed checklists to assess the inclusion of basic elements of informed consent as well as elements related to the collection and future storage of biological samples. Three of the authors independently evaluated and reached consensus on seven informed consent forms that were available for review. Of the seven consent forms, four had less than half of the basic elements of informed consent. None contained any information regarding whether genetic information relevant to health would be disclosed, whether participants may share in commercial products, the extent of confidentiality protections, and the inclusion of additional consent forms for future storage and use of tissue samples. Information regarding genetic risks and withdrawal of samples were rarely mentioned (1/7), whereas limits on future use of samples were mentioned in 3 of 7 consent forms. Ultimately, consent forms are not likely to address key issues regarding genetic research that have been recommended by research ethics guidelines. The Middle Permian to Lower Triassic Khuff Formation is one of the world's most prolific hydrocarbon reservoirs. This study is part of a research project on Khuff outcrop equivalents whose overall aim is to investigate the reservoir architecture on different scales. The present paper focuses on heterogeneities in Khuff-equivalent grainstones at the near well scale. An outcrop in the Oman Mountains, where the Khuff-equivalent Saiq and Mahil Formations are exposed in an area 1800 m long by 100 m high, was studied to map lateral and vertical depositional heterogeneities. The investigated section represents parts of three third-order sequences: the upper part of Khuff sequence (KS)3 (grain-dominated), the whole of KS2 (mud-dominated), and the lower part of KS1 (grain-dominated). Real-Time Kinematic GPS, satellite imagery, outcrop gamma-ray and digitized sedimentary logs were used for outcrop description and were integrated into a three-dimensional digital outcrop model. The resulting 3D facies model indicates that the apparently simple, layer-cake geometry of the grainstone reservoir facies shows pinching and swelling with a standard deviation of 12.75% of bed thickness. These thickness variations may influence volume calculations during reservoir assessments. The heterogeneities of grainstone bodies are represented by compositional (ooid, peloid or intraclast-dominated) and grain-size variations. Muddy event beds at the cm-scale were mapped out in detail in a 200 × 40 m outcrop window and together form a dense network of potential baffles to fluid flow. The thickness of these beds varies significantly due to syndepositional erosion. An important conclusion of this near well-scale study is that the perceived simple, layer-cake Khuff-equivalent succession in the study area is in fact heterogeneous in mud-rich deposits, while grain-rich deposits extend over a wide area with some thickness variations. Management of fish resources in the Western Indian Ocean is complicated due to the lack of data on the basic biology and landing statistics for exploited fish species. In this paper, a database including biological parameters, length frequency distributions and catches of Epinephelus gabriellae in Oman according to fleet components has been established to develop a management plan for its sustainable exploitation. Length cohort analyses and yield per recruit were examined by simulating changes in fishing effort in length at first capture and by introducing a seasonal ban for trawlers. The results showed a high sensitivity to the applied value of natural mortality (M). (i) With M = 0.40, a healthy status of the stock is observed; however, with M values of 0.20 and 0.15 the stock appears slightly overexploited, and actual F exceeds 10 and 30% of the F level, respectively. (ii) A moderate increase of length at first capture would not significantly affect the long-term yield or stock spawning biomass; however, a substantial length increase would in the long-term lead to a decrease in yields for the artisanal fleet using traps. (iii) A seasonal ban regulation for trawlers would not have a significant effect on the sustainable yield, but if the fishing effort were to increase considerably, a significant long-term gain in yield would be obtained with a closed season from April-September. This paper focuses on the identification of alloys and the manufacturing techniques used for inscribed bronze vessels from Sumhuram (modern Khor Rori, Sultanate of Oman). A group of 19 fragments (dating back to the first to second century ), thought to belong to the same inscribed vessel, were investigated with the aim of identifying the manufacturing process. The fragments were analysed by scanning electron microscopy with both energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and micro-Raman probe, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS), as well as X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicate that these fragments belong to different artefacts that all consist of leaded bronze. However, three different groups were identified on the basis of the composition and microstructure of the fragments. The fragments bearing inscriptions were produced by lost-wax casting with the 'wax-thread moulding' technique (in which each letter is shaped separately with segments of wax lace on the sheet of the wax model).
